Welcome to the Wild West I want to do a cowboy
ION JUST JACK
W
hen I was a kid my favorite TV show was “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Every closeted gay boy or girl watched “The Dukes of Hazzard”. We all secretly lusted after either Bo, Luke or Daisy Duke. These adorable southerner cowboys and cowgirl showed off their assets with their tight jeans or “daisy dukes”, big hats, cowboy boots and carefree lawless lifestyle were irresistible. This month, we celebrate the urban cowboy at the 2024 AGRA rodeo, February 12-13 at Corona Ranch. Jump on the Charlie’s rodeo stage “motor” coach for a weekend of safe fun. Make sure you wear your tightest denim, biggest belt buckle, boots and 5 gallon hats. Stop by the ION Arizona booth and say “Howdy Cowboy”. This month celebrates the beginning of our festival/event season. We start with the Desperado Film Festival, Rodeo, Melrose Street Fair, Sundays on Central, Willo Home Tour, Rainbows Festival and AIDS Walk to name a few. Next month we are looking for some adorable dogs, pups and and their best friends for our annual Pups in the City. Please send us a photo of you and your dog(s) to IONarizona@me.com and we’ll schedule a professional photo shoot. Best of all, you get to keep your photo for use on social media. That’s it for me. This cowboy is headin’ to the rodeo. Don’t forget to take ION as you explore our amazing community and events. Be safe, get tested, have fun and be good to each other. Jack Tesorero Urban Cowboy 8

Giddy up! You don’t have to be an old cowhand from the Rio Grande to go to the 38th Annual Arizona Gay Rodeo. Heck, some of you greenhorn, city slicker, whippersnappers weren’t even born when it first started. There’s entertainment, drag (of course), dancing, and a market in the pavilion. Feeling parched? Don’t worry. There’s plenty of firewater on hand. Horngry? They’ve got vittles for you, too. Dust off your boots and we’ll see you at the Corona Ranch, 7811 S. 29th Ave. on the SE corner of 29th Avenue and Baseline Rd. in Laveen. Don’t want to drive? Charlie’s has party bus transportation from the big city to the rodeo. Check out CharliesPhoenix.com for info. For a complete schedule and more information check out AGRA-PHX.com 38

HE WENT THAT WAY
I Am Not Gay: a musical Plagued by childhood issues destroying his life, Misha, an obsessive-compulsive MMA fighter, moves to Fire Island and pretends to be gay in order to buy the house of his dreams and exorcise his demons. It sounds comical, but it’s not. A dreary film with a mishmash of intersections combining sexuality, masculinity, and trauma creating a messy conversation.
ION STREAMING
He Went That Way It’s all about Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, Saltburn.) Although it’s not a gay movie, apparently there’s a lot of sexual tension between him and real life gay Zachary Quinto’s character, an animal trainer, who kidnaps a TV star chimp in this thriller based on a true story about a serial killer. Bad reviews, but, hey, Jacob Elordi … damn! VOD on a variety of streaming platforms.
The New Look This 10 part historical drama tells the story of fashion designer great Christian Dior’s rise to fame in Paris during WWII and explores the hope and rebirth of fashion under Nazi occupation. Fur flies between Dior and his rivalry with Coco Chanel. Bonus: Glenn Close serving up Miranda Priestly realness Harper’s Bazaar editrix Carmel Snow. February 14

Indigiqueer Artist
Roger Kuhn Discovers His True Colors By Larry Olsen
I
“ always knew I was different from the other kids my age,” says musician Roger Kuhn. In addition to standing out as bi-racial and bi-cultural – his father was of German and Russian descent and his mother is a tribal Poarch Creek woman – Roger says he never felt quite settled in his skin. “I didn’t feel like a boy, nor did I feel like a girl. I grew up loving He-Man, Thundercats, Barbie, and She-Ra. I used to pretend I was Madonna and David Bowie at the same time.” It wasn’t until his mid-20s when Roger discovered what it meant to be Two-Spirit, signifying male, female, and intersexed individuals who combine activities of both gender traits. In most tribes they are considered neither men nor women; they occupy a distinct, alternative gender status. “Two-Spirit is a term used by Indigenous people who have gender and sexual orientation variance and a deep connection to their Native identity,” said Kuh. “I first learned the term in 2005 from another Two-Spirit person who said to me, ‘You’re like me, Two-Spirit.’ I identify more as Two-Spirit than I do as gay because being a Native American person is as important to me as my identity as a gay person. Two-Spirit allows me to not have to choose.” Roger describes his gender and sexuality as circular and not on a fixed binary. “It’s like peering through a kaleidoscope and seeing multiples shapes, colors, expressions, and beauty,” he explains. He sings about it in his new single, “Kaleidoscope,” a song rooted in classic house and progressive EDM that champions finding inner strength and celebrating liberation, and his new book, Somacultural Liberation, out this month. “For me, freedom is living my truth and pursuing my dreams,” he says. “One of the primary reasons I became a musician and author was to break free from the limitations that others placed on me my whole life. I discovered that through writing and song I could share my truth,” Roger expands. “I am an Indigiqueer person. There are few examples of Indigiqueer people in mainstream media. I’ve had to learn new ways to navigate systems that were put in place to silence and control Indigenous people.” Is “Kaleidoscope” intended to be a Two-Spirit anthem? Roger Kuhn: It’s an anthem for all of us, really. “Kaleidoscope” is about trusting our vulnerability and pursuing our inner most truth. For me, part of that was to embrace my identity as a Poarch Creek Two-Spirit person and to advocate for other 2SLGBTQIA+ and all marginalized people.
What advice would you have for someone still struggling to find their place and/or their people? RK: Don’t put on facades. I’m careful to always be open, honest, caring, and supportive. I don’t give my time or talent to people who don’t respect my boundaries and limitations. Ultimately, I love myself and know myself enough to recognize that I still have a lot to learn and unlearn. I welcome growth and change. I encourage others to do the same. What do you hope fans take away from “Kaleidoscope”? RK: The power of vulnerability will lead you closer to your liberation. Trust that you have wings and you can soar.
Roger Kuhn’s “Kaleidoscope” is being distributed by So Fierce Music/The Orchard/Sony Music Entertainment and is available on all digital platforms. Find out more at RogerKuhn.com

The Royale Opens A Royal Affair
F
inally! The Royale celebrated their long awaited grand opening, hosted by Barbra Seville, complete with a ribbon cutting performed by the U.S. Congress Representative, the Honorable Greg Stanton. Creators and co-owners Mark Howard and his husband, architect and designer Rocco Meneguale, former co-owners of Bliss REBAR and FEZ had been toying with the idea of doing something like the Royale for about five or six years. The start of this construction journey started at the end of 2021. There was no shortage of inspiration for their dream project when it came from redeveloping the old auto repair site. “The goal was to create a safe and welcoming space that helps expand community and be a place to gather, connect, and rejuvenate,” explained Meneguale. “I was inspired by the Mid Century Modern architecture along the Melrose Mile and wanted to pay homage to the history of the site as well the neighborhood.” The team knew exactly what they wanted to create. “The ‘vibe’ we were going for was really about adhering to our goals of creating a space that helps to expand community while being a place to gather, connect, and rejuvenate,” Rocco expanded. “We wanted to attract businesses that would make sense to have not only together in one place but also in the Melrose neighborhood.” Creating The Royale was a complicated development and renovation project. One of the greatest challenges were the many codes, rules, and zoning ordinances that often contradict one another and many times don’t align at all with the goals and reality of doing an project within the urban fabric nor do they align with creating what the City calls “an adaptive reuse project.” “This is no ordinary development project,” Mark pointed out. “It was envisioned, cultivated, designed, supported, constructed and leased with the community as its core. The selection of the Melrose was not an accident. The design was not an accident. The selection of tenants was not an accident. It was by design.” The Royale is a “feeling.” Rocco pointed out, “The positive energy that you feel when you walk through the front gates comes not only by our awesome tenants, but by the design/architecture as well. So many people have said ‘This place feels so welcoming’ and that’s a wonderful thing to hear.” (Cont’d., next page.) FEB 2024
