United We Stand O
ne of the toughest challenges facing our community today is the ongoing fight for equality. Whether it’s in the schoolroom, workplace or even in restrooms, now, more than ever, we need to unite. Personally, I’m a lover not a fighter, but sometimes I’m pushed into activism unknowingly. Last month I was interviewed by NBC Channel 12 News reporter (and sexy past ION cover model) Nico Santos for a story about President Trump’s decision not to reverse Obama’s order to protect LGBT federal employees. I’ve always maintained that neither I nor ION Arizona magazine is the voice of our community. We all have a voice. I just have a magazine to express mine. When Nico introduced me, he said that I was a local activist. I’ve never been called that. It made me think: “Why do I have to be an activist to fight for what is rightfully ours. Can’t I just be Jack?” This month we celebrate Phoenix Pride. Pride in ourselves, pride in our community and pride in our country. The later is becoming increasingly difficult but we will prevail and equality will win. We just need your help to continue the fight. As I get off my soap box, I have to thank all the hard working people that made 24

this year’s Phoenix Pride Festival and Parade such a success. The board, the employees, the managers, the volunteers, sponsors, venders, entertainers, and all of you, thank you. You are the community. You are why we are here. I’m privileged to be a part of such a great group of people. When I started ION, I was a young 34-years-young. This month I turn 50. Yes 50. (I put this at the end of my article hoping you don’t Just read this far.) I don’t Jack feel it and some people 1973 say I don’t look like it. I came out late but made up for lost time over the years. I’m proud of what I have accomplished and the relationships I’ve nurtured. I’m proud of where I’m going and what I can do to make this world a better place. So for all of you people who are 50 and over (it’ll happen to you, too, Millennials!) this issue is for you. This is our expanded 132-page Phoenix Pride issue including our 8th annual Prismatic Pride Awards, our annual swimsuit photoshoot, the sassy RuPaul Drag Race contestants appearing in the Haters Roast, Bar1’s infamous Heel Party and more! As the great Betty White once said, “I’m not old. We are all getting older”. Stay wise, stay passionate and, most importantly, enjoy this issue of ION Arizona!

Straight allies Stephanie and chris hewitt You’ve probably seen them at LGBT events, galas, and fundraisers but who are these straight allies who we like to call “The Fabulous Hewitts”? Stephanie, Chris and their 8-yearold twins—Lauren and Calvin—are a Central Phoenix family who are truly at home with our LGBT community. Chris, (who, coincidentally, was raised by a gay father) and his lovely wife Stephanie are drawn to the strength and authenticity of the LGBT community. Advocating and supporting the LGBT community is an extension of their love for this extended family. Now you know why they’re so fabulous!

ou might say that life in the saloon business is in Stacy Louis’ blood. Since he was a two-year-old toddler at his parent’s bar in Newport News, Virginia, called -- don’t laugh -- Tops! We’re proud that Stacy Louis is one of the Community Grand Marshall’s for the Phoenix Pride Parade 2017. How did he get the honor?
survivors of the club’s staff to Phoenix and staged a benefit for the victims, raising $22,500. “I just love what I do. I’m proud to have my name out there for the people who know Stacy’s @ Melrose and to give back. I’m proud of what I can do, proud of what I’ve done.”
“I’m proud of what I can do, proud of what I’ve done.”
Stacy has been a familiar, smiling face behind some of the best bars in Phoenix since 1990—the same year he came out after living a straight life, married for 14 years. “I tended bar at Amsterdam, Kobalt and Bar1,” he said. “I had a great time!” Stacy always wanted to have his own cocktail lounge and nightclub. It didn’t just happen overnight, but when it happened, it was worth waiting for. Stacy’s @Melrose opened in August, 2013. Small details make a big difference: Stacy made sure to give back to the community. Not just in the Valley, but for people on the other side of the United States he doesn’t even know. “I finally found my calling,” Stacy said. “It’s something I always wanted to do. Now I can, and it’s wonderful to be able to help people, making up for all the years that I couldn’t.” Stacy and his bar’s patron’s have raised money benefiting local agencies, like Mulligan’s Manor and one•n•ten. After the tragedy Pulse Orlando he flew
What’s Stacy’s secret to success? “I don’t have any secrets; it’s kindness, treating everyone equally, loving everyone as much as you can. I love meeting people—I just wish I could remember everyone’s name!” he laughed. “I’m proud to have been married to a wonderful woman; proud of my daughter and my two grandchildren.” It all paid off. “I cried when they told me I was going to be Grand Marshal,” Stacy admitted. “I’ve always said that I don’t want anything in return. Well, I lied—I do!” Stacy kidded. “Really. It’s so nice to get the recognition. I’m practicing my parade wave.” Stacy’s @ Melrose is located at 4343 N. 7th Ave, Phoenix. Going to California on vacation? Look for the new Stacy’s @ Palm Springs on 220 E. Arenas Rd. this summer! oly smokes! These ain’t your garden variety nuns, kids. The Grand Canyon Order of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence strongly believe that each of us has a path to follow on this Earth. Through their hard work, (with a little bit of fun along the way) they’ve found a way to help their fellow brothers and sisters on Earth lead rich and rewarding lives without guilt and shame.
community deal with issues with HIV/ AIDS, to name a few. The Sisters welcome all who feel the calling regardless of sexuality, gender, race or creed. Sisters are called to give of their time and energy to serve the community -- the fab clothes, creative makeup and accessories are a little zany, sure, but they take their calling very seriously. Many of the sisters make it a lifetime commitment.
“The greatest satisfaction I get is helping the community, helping others who are in need and helping others find a way to express themselves”
They’re on a mission, alright: All Love, All Joy, No Guilt. They’re dedicated to the promulgation of universal joy and the expiation of stigmatic guilt. Their ministry is one of public manifestation and habitual perpetration and to Serve the Community for the Betterment of All. In short, doing good deeds. They’ve even canonized a few local saints along the way, too. You’ve seen them at bars, nightclubs, events and fundraisers all over the Valley. Their vision is to unite, elevate and empower the LGBT community throughout Arizona. Their primary role and pledge is the cooperative support of every facet of the LGBT community through fundraising, entertainment and education.
Some of their favorite local organizations benefiting from their mercy (and money!) are Aunt Rita’s Foundation, a clearinghouse of organizations and benefiting agencies for the care of those with HIV/AIDS, Joshua Tree Feeding Program and Logan’s Playground, helping the youngest members of our

Your Own Sexual Jesus N
early Naked continues its 18th season with another Arizona premiere, and another highly provocative (and exceptionally naked) play, In the Garden. This delightful tragi-comedy by playwright Norman Allen is known for turning heads, both, with its nudity, and, more pointedly, its religious content. It centers around a young man named Gabe, who is equal parts con-artist, prostitute and, perhaps, prophet. He entangles himself into the lives of two couples, and begins a strange process of healing their spiritual wounds, while fulfilling their sexual desires. With unworldly charisma, this handsome young man constructs a web of seduction and theology grounded in the lessons of the New Testament. A professor of philosophy, his fashionista wife, and their glib young friends must rise to the boy’s erotic and spiritual challenge, questioning their lives as they question his very identity. Local actor Cole Brackney takes his star turn as “Gabe.” He was previously seen in Nearly Naked’s wonderful remount of Valhalla and their ridiculous (in a good way) take on Debbie Does Dallas: the Musical. He was also striking in Stray Cat Theatre’s production of Pluto (and
their first foray into musicals with Heathers). And although he’s done nudity before, both on stage and as an art model, it was nothing to the extent that he takes it to in In the Garden. “We have always lived in a society that has rejected nudity and even shunned it. I feel no problems with my body and see stage nudity as a chance to normalize the nude form,” says Brackney. With high comedy and thoughtprovoking drama, In the Garden blends sexual conventions, high fashion, Nietzsche and Christ in an übertheatrical rollercoaster ride. We’re excited to see Cole (ahem, all of Cole) as he finds his sexual Jesus in In the Garden. If you want a discount, come join us on ION NIGHT at Nearly Naked Theatre on Thursday, April 13. Tickets for that performance are 18% off if you use code IONNITE at checkout. Nearly Naked performs in the Hardes Theatre auditorium at Phoenix Theatre 100 E. All About Elle 3 Generations Leap!
Starring: Elle Fanning, Dane DeHaan, Carly Rae Jepsen This month we’re all about Elle Fanning. In addition to live action features like Maleficent, Reservation Road and recently, Mike Mill’s brilliant 20th Century Women, she’s been the voice talent in a surprising number of animated features like, Frankenweenie, My Neighbor Totoro, The Boxtrolls, Astro Boy. With Leap! she adds another credit to her vocal résumé. Picture it. Paris, 1884. Félicie Milliner (Fanning), a penniless orphan girl arrives in the City of Lights with a dream: to become a ballerina. A mysterious charwoman, Odette (Jepsen. You know, of Call Me, Maybe fame), mentors Félicie, teaching her that it takes hard work to make it in a tutu. Friendship, helps, too. Félicie joins forces with the wacky, young Victor (the enormously talented DeHaan, Kill Your Darlings, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but also of the bizarre, regrettable Two Lovers and a Bear reviewed in last month in ION’s “Home Viewing” column). Together, they give each other the boost friends need to hit the big time. C’est merveilleux! Opens April 21

“I’m done with being an exception!” cries Ray in this story about a ftm transgender teen struggling to understand his body and his family at the same time. A family living under one roof in New York must deal with a lifechanging transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Fanning) is a teenager who comes to the realization that he isn’t meant to be a girl, deciding to transition to his true identity as male. His single mother, Maggie (Watts, Birdman, St. Vincent), must track down Ray’s biological father (Donovan, Manchester by the Sea) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Meanwhile, Dolly, Ray’s lesbian grandmother (Sarandon, The Feud, Dead Man Walking), is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. Everyone must confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family to find acceptance and understanding. Completed and premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, 2015, as About Ray, receiving lukewarm reviews. It was re-edited in 2016. It’ll be interesting to see how it was finally realized. Opens May 5 April 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 93

Charli XCX Number 1 Angel Charli XCX was never going to be your typical pop ingenue. Debut True Romance was riddled with Belinda Carlisle meets Paula Abdul romps. Appreciation became obsession when she teamed with Icona Pop for “I Love It” and released her breakout album Sucker. Between “I Love It”, “Boom Clap” and appearing on Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” it was evident Charli was no pop passerby, but at the least someone to watch. With Number 1 Angel Charli distills her club kid fantasy into a cool and cohesive mixtape of songs that instantly stick in your head. It opens with “Dreamer,” a foggy, pared down club banger, “3 a.m. (Pull Up)” perfectly describes the moment you decided that you should have that middle-of-the-night hookup with an ex. It’s an instant anthem with a bouncy club kid ready beat we haven’t heard since Venga Boys or—dare I say—Alice DeeJay. It’s easy to dismiss confectionary pop music like Angel, but when the chorus of “ILU2” hits, you can’t deny Charli knows how to get you singing along. “I love you too-ooh, love you too-ooh.” “Lip Gloss” is genius. You’re pulled in by the “stickyicky-icky like lip gloss” hook and out of nowhere the song throws you in a trap with rapper CupcakKe. Number 1 Angel is a pioneering effort in the future of pop, and in the very least, a highlight in a future drag set list. Available Now
Aural Fixation ANOHNI Paradise
Music about the slow-melting ice apocalypse of climate change and the struggles of the trans community is no easy sell. Yet ANOHNI manages to not only create the most ethereal art with her stances, but globally sell out arenas and harvest a cult-like following. Her outstanding 2016 release HOPELESSNESS replaced her traditional use of piano in strings with maximalist, club-ready beats produced by Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix. Her new EP is a sort of addendum to last year’s HOPELESSNESS. “In My Dreams” is hauntingly beautiful. Title track “Paradise” bumps just like Bey’s “Drunk in Love,” but instead of “Surfboard” there’s “My mother’s love, her gentle touch, my father’s hand, rests on my throat.” Politics and production aside you can’t deny her distinct and angelic voice. The six songs on Paradise are melancholic, urgent and enveloping. A must listen. Available Now

Bette & Joan
Y
ou don’t have to be a gay man to get sucked into Ryan Murphy’s mini-series The Feud on the FX Channel, but it helps. Queens have long been obsessed with screen legends Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, the acrimonious co-stars of the 1962 hag horror epic, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Despite The Feud’s debatable performances with Jessica Lange as Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Davis, younger ION Arizona readers may not be acquainted with the real actresses. Recently re-released, remastered DVD masterpieces from the original stars’ bodies of work are worth watching for an accurate assessment of their prodigious talent.

Sudden Fear 1952
Starring: Joan Crawford, Jack Palance, Gloria Grahame
This psychological film noir thriller features a mature Crawford at her glamorous, wolf-like best. As Myra Hudson, a filthy rich playwright, she meets and marries struggling actor Lester Blaine (the eternally sinister Palance, earning him a “Best Actor” nom here). When he learns Myra intends to unload a sizable chunk of her fortune, he colludes with his devious girlfriend, Ilene, (Grahame, always the sniveling moll) to snuff her out and collect. Will Myra find out before it’s too late? Extended scenes without dialogue heighten the suspense, showcasing Crawford’s exceptional physical acting ability from her silent movie days. White-knuckle highlights include Joan racing through hilly San Francisco in her trademark ankle-strap “fuck me” pumps while being chased by a car. Despite stylistic differences, it’s still an exciting piece of moviemaking today. Crawford is luminous, delivering the goods. Nobody suffers in mink the way Joan does.
Another Man’s Poison
1951 Starring: Bette Davis, Gary Merrill This classic English drawing room murder mystery is restored and back in print. Imagine the board game Clue, but with a mature, mouthy, mean, heavy-smoking bitch who looks an awful lot like Bette Davis in this film noir caper. Here, a chatty Davis rules the roost as Janet Frobisher, a filthy rich mystery writer (sound vaguely familiar?) Things get complicated when her estranged Husband With A Past escapes prison and shows up on her doorstep, inconveniently interrupting things like Janet’s affair with her secretary’s husband. Her jailbird husband’s accomplice in a post-prison break bank robbery, George (Merrill, Davis’ real life husband), knocks on the door, complicating matters further. Sooner or later someone has to die. Who will it be? The husband? The accomplice? The lover? The secretary? The nosy neighbor? Or Janet’s best friend: her horse?
Sudden Fear earned Crawford her third and final Oscar nomination, pitting her against Bette Davis for The Star, the tale of a drunken has-been, rumored to be a scathing, underhanded exposé about Crawford. (Both lost.)
This sometimes claustrophobic, wobbly, Agatha Christie-like “dark and stormy night” mystery is full of convoluted plot twists with a surprise (if not somewhat moral) ending. Heavy on dialogue (very), Davis’ voracious acting ability (along with a little scene-chewing) is at its zenith.

rom a city that not so many years ago offered not a whole lot beyond tacos and Peter Piper Pizza along with few stuffy dining rooms in old hotels, we’ve had a culinary growth spurt that’s just about to make Phoenix a city of genuine “Foodies.” In a city loaded with celebrities, it wasn’t ‘til now that we garnered a genuine “celebrity chef.” Scott Conant judged and competed on Top Chef, Chopped All Stars, season 3, Beat Bobby Flay, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, and the list goes on. Prestigious Food and Wine magazine named him one of the “Best New Chefs in America” in 2004. After cutting his teeth on the restaurant scene in New York City, the 46-yearold Conant opened restaurants in the Big Apple as well as the chi-chi Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Beverly Hills and Miami. In his free time he’s written three cookbooks. So it was quite the coup when Chef said, “Pasta la vista!” to the East, bought a home in Scottsdale, moved his family here and opened a place on restaurant glutted 7th Street, building where a Planned Parenthood used to be.
Mora the Merrier places have some kinks to work out, Mora seems to be “perfetto.” The modern, fashionable osteria is packed to the 30-foot high rafters just about every night. We learned why. The smart server trundled by with a divine Bread Cart loaded with (mostly) house made stromboli, focaccia and ciabattina varieties served with ramekins of mouthwatering artichoke “bomba,” mascarpone butter, roasted garlic spread and eggplant caponata spreads you have to try. $8 per table. We dare you to make the deceptively simple sounding Endive and Radicchio antipasti with pignoli (pine nuts), vinaigrette, with generous shavings of parmigiano cheese. What’s the secret? Try it and let us know. $9 We tucked right into the delicate yet savory Pork and Veal Meatballs topped with semolina pudding (think of a velvetsmooth, sweet Cream of Wheat, almost a béchamel sauce here), and broccoli rabe (also called rapini) pesto. Three for $11 is a tad steep, but worth the splurge.
Mora’s pasta are all made in house; they offer six different varieties of “Pasta for Mora opened February 5. Whereas most the Soul” on their menu. Al dente, Chef Conant is an expert at boosting the flavor April 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 99

of pasta dishes (his tips is the first one showing when you google “Pasta Flavor.”) We chose Torchio, (a tornado shaped “bell” for holding sauces) with a thick, hearty porcini ragù, a Tuscan favorite. A generous, very shareable bowl is yours for $20.
wise choice with the Pizza Napoletana Guanciale Pizza with truffle fonduta (a melted cheese sauce; fondue), tiny, mandolinthin slices of potato and topped with an egg. $16. The dough is hand-tossed (this is a show in itself, on view when you enter). The Seafood Pizza is calling our name next time. $17
Five choices of even more substantial kitchen faves from the Main Course menu make choosing difficult. We loved the Grilled Scaloppine of Beef Short Rib with Calabrian chili glaze, charred zucchini, arugula. Thinly sliced, juicy, ohso-tender and packed with flavor, thanks to the subtle, slightly sweet glaze. Tip: Don’t order the Endive Radicchio salad we mentioned in addition to this. They give you plenty on the side. $26
A first class bar offers a delightful assortment of craft cocktails; we’re partial to “Il Pirata.” (We’re also mighty partial to the raven-haired bartender Toby. Ask for him.)
Don’t miss out on Chef’s Pasta al Pomodoro; this is his signature dish that won him the James Beard Award. $18
Mora is open for dinner only; hopefully lunch is on the way. Basta!
What’s Italian dining without pizza, paysano? Four different wood-fired oven pies make it hard to decide. We made a

unties, it appears that the folks in this month’s Favorite Bitch® could benefit from some hobbies rather than recreational use of their time. Call me Nancy Reagan, ‘cuz I’m takin’ on Mary Jane, Tina, Crystal and that tawdry Snow White. Note to Millennials: I’m sure you’re wondering who this Nancy chick is. Sit your happy asses on down, Google “Just Say No,” and get yourself a history lesson in how to avoid becoming a haute mess! Dear Miss Tiger, I enjoy getting buzzed and shopping online. I’m recently unemployment so it’s not like I have to be anywhere. Since I can’t afford the good stuff, is it tacky to drink boxed wine? — Ray Dear Your Social Status Is The Least Of Your Worries, Boxed wine is kinda like your overdue credit card bills ... hard to open and hard to swallow. Dear Miss Tiger, Whenever I buy party favors from my straight dealer, I end up sleeping with him. Any advice? — Liam Dear Keep The Piñata And Lose The Party, NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, My husband gets high and messes with his ex. What’s his problem? — Marlon Dear You’re The One With The Problem For Putting

Dear Miss Tiger, Doyou have any tips for loosening up my hole without using poppers? I’m in my 70s and would like to stop using them. — Arthur Dear I Think You Were Sniffin’ RUSH When You Wrote Me, ‘Cuz the poppers done went to your head, granddaddy. Let’s B celebrate Phoenix Pride, my little pigeons! So much has been happening. Now to put in a nutshell! D
BS West celebrated the best in blue movies (and left me with blue balls!) when they brought out the most scandalizing boys on film who do all those things your mama warned you about for their annual party, “Pop! Goes the Zipper!” I turned into a squealing fangirl when I spotted E Russian dream ‘n’ cream machine (A) Jacob Peterson with his real life boyfriend, Peaches. Yes, the fabled Peachiz666 of Instagram and Snapchat. If you don’t follow these , I highly suggest you enroll. It’s. So. Worth. It. Keep a Kleenex nearby. I’m not kidding. Onstage stud (B) Trenton Ducati showed the audience his “O-Face.” And, oh my what a face it is! As the Mr. & Miss Phoenix Pride
Pageant approached, the competing girls gave us a sneak preview at the fabulous FOUND:RE Hotel. The lovely (C) Eva Angelica Stratton and death-drop-deadgorgeous Miley Mitchells paused for a moment of sisterly bonding for the camera before they scratched each others’ eyes out. (Totally kidding! Eva hobbled Miley with a steel baton. Fooled you!)
Aunt Rita’s Foundation celebrated with, “Red is the Night.” Legendary star (D) Celia Putty’s version of legendary star Liza Minnelli thought that the “Cabaret” was in the Men’s Room, where she buttonholed Hollywood Squares center square, event headliner Bruce Vilanch, telling him stories about her screwy mama, Judy Garland, and shaking him down for packets of Splenda he nicked and then hoovering them up her nose. Talk about getting into character! The event’s Master of Ceremonies, Arizona’s Hip Historian (E) Marshall Shore kibbutzed with his pal, the urbane, very successful Jason CFW Brock—who happens to be single, boys! Just lettin’ you know! Happy Pride, everyone! April 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 129
