Explore Arizona at “See” Level

I

’ve lived in Arizona for over 19 years. I still can’t believe how big and diverse this state is. There are so many cities, cultures, landscapes and even climates to discover. Best of all, everything is just a day trip away and you can see it all by car. Fenders and Friends Last month, my friends from the new car club Fenders and Friends and I volunteered and were invited to judge the 30th annual Route 66 Fun Run. Almost 1000 cars of all types drive down the historic Route 66, finishing with an epic auto show in Kingman. During our journey, we stopped in Parker, Lake Havasu, Hackberry, and ended for lunch in Seligman at the Road Kill Cafe.

280Z, Mercury Zephyr ... get it?). They like to explore the winding, narrow roads of the east side of the state from Globe, Stanton and ending with an overnight stay in Pinetop. Always following the posted speed limits, these boys push their cars and friendships to their limits. Pride in Arizona With Phoenix Pride behind us, it’s time to hop in your car once again and explore more of Arizona. Take a short drive to Flagstaff for Pride in the Pines. A cool, green oasis just two hours north. Then it’s off to Southern Arizona to one of the most friendly cities and a quaint old mining town for Bisbee Pride.

We invited you to share snapshots of your own adventures with us for our annual feature, “Explore Arizona.” We’re excited Cactus 4 Wheelers to showcase you—our readers—here on Another way to discover Arizona is the pages of ION to see where you’ve by going off road with the Cactus 4 been. You left no stone unturned from Wheelers. This group of amazing people Camp Verde to Quartzite! Keep it take their 4x4 trucks where no man has up, explorers! gone before. You wouldn’t believe the rivers, lakes and bridges that exist off So as it heats up, cool down with a the beaten path. Even if you don’t have refreshing beverage and cuddle up with a truck, these fun guys can take a few this issue of ION and explore Arizona with lucky people along for the ride of your friends! their life. Tom Atwood Photographs LGBT Americans at home. 50

WWW.IONAZ.COM June 2017

P hotographer Tom Atwood tackled an imaginative

and ambitious series of photographic portraits when he traveled to 30 different states to photograph more than 350 LGBT subjects in their own home. A selection of these startling portraits are included in his new book, Kings & Queens in Their Castles. This intimate look through a window into the private lives of celebrities and ordinary folks alike from all walks of life show the LGBT people at home, in their natural environment. Some—like TV personality and nabob Carson Kressley standing at mirror in his pink dressing room—show off their vulnerability under the theatricality. Others—like cartoonist and author of Broadway hit Fun Home— Alison Bechdel (pictured center) is at home in rural Vermont, composting with her wife, painter Holly Rae Taylor. (continued next page)

Atwood’s portraits celebrate the ordinary and the eccentric, the overlooked and flamboyant in a way you’ve never seen this specific genre of Americans before with a sensitivity that celebrates LGBT community uniquely captured on film. “My images dance the line between beauty and chaos,” explained Atwood. “Sometimes simultaneously comforting and unsettling. I hope they arouse in you as much delight and curiosity as they do in me.” ION Arizona is proud to feature a few of Atwoods tableaux, including some special people right here in Arizona. With Father’s Day coming up, (or a belated Mother’s Day) this makes an especially great gift for any parent (LGBT or straight) from their LGBT (or straight) offspring. ION Arizona readers can view more photos and purchase this beautiful, high quality, hardcover book at TomAtwood. com/Kings-Queens. $45 plus S/H. Fine art prints are also available. Good ‘n’ Evil The Mummy Wonder Woman Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Elena Anaya

Starring: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe In the spirit of Girl Power, just like the world of superheroes, legendary monsters movies don’t have to be dominated by men, either.

It’s been a long time coming for this DC comic super-heroine to spin around onto the silver screen (and save the world, coincidentally.) Since 1996, gossip linked Sandra Bullock, Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie, Beyoncé, Catherine ZetaJones and many others to play the Amazonian glamour girl. Who will it be? Miss Israel 2004’s Gadot, The Fast and the Furious franchise) won! As Princess Diana (not the doomed English one) she’s trained to be an unconquerable warrior, raised on the uncharted, estrogen infused, all-female island, Themyscira. Diana rescues downed American pilot Steve Trevor (Pine, Star Trek), who tells her about a little global disagreement that we now call “World War I,” which threatens to ruin pretty much everything, no thanks to Kaiser Wilhelm and Doctor Poison (Anaya, The Skin I Live In). No word about if this Wonder Woman will fly her invisible airplane, but we know the Golden Lasso of Truth and those bracelets still come in handy. Sadly, TV’s super gal Lynda Carter won’t be making any cameos as initially planned. Opens: June 2

Another Princess (Boutella, Star Trek Beyond), whose destiny was stolen from her millennia before, lies entombed deep below the stinging Egyptian sands. As the mummy traditional goes, her slumber is disturbed, and -- boy, is she mad! Her shambling, busty corpse pursues former Navy SEAL Nick Morton (Cruise, Mission Impossible) because the whole Scientology business bugs her, too. (Okay, maybe that’s not part of the plot.) Enter Dr. Henry Jekyll (Crowe, Gladiator), who works for a syndicate that deals specifically with monsters. (This can’t be good once Mr. Hyde shows up.) Expect lots of twists, surprises and dramatic special effects. Opens June 9

Perfume Genius No Shape

“No family is safe when I sashay” was Michael Hadreas’, aka Perfume Genius’ queer battle cry on 2014’s “Queen.” On that album, Too Bright, Hadreas married classical art music and the trappings of 70s glam rock personified in Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Where those idols couldn’t be out and proud of their queer identities, Hadreas puts it at the forefront. No Shape opens tenderly with “Otherside,” a piano ballad that explodes with the glistening notes from an organ that you’d expect at a coronation, as if Hadreas took the legacy of Queen with his music. “Slip Away” crosses baroque music with rock—a guitar subs for a harpsichord, but still it feels like it belongs in director Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. On “Just Like Love” he admires a boy’s dress, while challenging judgmental onlookers with “Go Ahead” when he sings, “Go ahead and try!” and protests “How long do we have to live right/ before we even have to try?” on “Valley General.” No Shape is the perfect album for right now, straddling the crazy world around us and the beauty of an open-minded community. Mary J. Blige

Strength of a Woman Let me start by saying that Mary J. Blige is a living legend. Her

Aural Fixation

nearly 30-year career is full of highlights: marrying hip hop and soul and birthing a new genre with What’s the 411?, respect from all the greats, nine Grammy awards, drag queen staple “Just Fine” and even awkwardly singing the truth on camera to an audience of one, Hillary Clinton. For all those highs there have been plenty lows: her fights with management, a history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as heartbreak, all of which she managed to alchemically turn into hits. The woman who proclaimed “No More Drama” in 2001 is back with more drama. After a nasty split with her long time husband and manager, Mary is back with Strength of a Woman, 57 minutes of redundant steaming anger and sadness. The elegance and simplicity of early hits like, “Not Gon’ Cry” seem to be poorly rehashed. Enlisting DJ Khaled, Missy Elliot and Kanye West can’t seem to breathe life into this mostly boring, forgettable album. Her collaboration with KAYTRANADA and BadBadNotGood stands out, pairing Blige’s sorrow to a BPM more suited for keeping someone’s interest. Despite the history of heartbreak turned hit, Blige’s formula fails her. Available Now

New Title Orange Is the New Black Shut In

(2016)

Starring: Naomi Watts, Charlie Heaton, Oliver Platt, Jacob Tremblay Part ghost story, part horror, part Greek tragedy, a little Freudian, and lots of psycho-terror. Widowed child psychologist Mary Portman (Watts, St. Vincent, Mulholland Dr.) lives in an old, rambling, two-story, Martha Stewart dream house in Maine. She cares for her 18-year-old stepson, Stephen (Heaton, Stranger Things), a quadriplegic crippled in an automobile accident killing his father, Mary’s husband. Unhappily, Mary decides to put Stephen in a care facility. As an ice storm hits, a deaf-mute runaway child Mary is counseling (exactly how they communicate, we’re not sure) seeks refuge in her home. Mary discovers him, but he disappears suddenly. Or does he? Is he dead or alive? Mary has bizarre visitations from the lost boy’s ghost. Without giving any spoilers, things start going wrong in a spooky, old house without power, a cripple, a ghost and a hysterical woman. If you don’t believe me, the ominous music makes sure you know “This is some scary shit” with crashing drums and sudden crescendos. The critics (and many movie goers) hated Shut In. The first thirty minutes are plodding with bad or confusing set-ups. Sure, a clichéd, “The call is coming from inside the house!” moment is a little eyerolling, but all-in-all, once the action starts, the movie accomplishes what it intended: scare you. ★★☆☆☆

(season 4, 2016)

Starring: Taylor Schilling, Lea DeLaria, Danielle Brooks, Uzo Aduba Like Nurse Jackie and Shameless and other many other dramedies, life in Litchfield Penitentiary takes on a darker turn with less comedy this season, delving into the rampant racial and economic tensions. The women’s prison is overrun with new inmates and overseen by inexperienced guards, where it undergoes an unprecedented culture war. New characters are locked up this season. Judy King (veteran Broadway and TV actress Blair Brown, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd), patterned after Martha Stewart, provides laughs in the clink. Creator Jenji Kohan (Weeds) achieved her goal: the star of the series is the entire ensemble cast, not a singular individual. Audiences grumbled about missing the pervasive presence of Piper Champman (Taylor Schilling, Dark Matter). She is such a superb actress that reducing her role doesn’t seem fair. A gag reel, tour of the set and audio commentaries make this 3-disc set a keeper. ★★★★☆ Available Now, $34.98 SRP -- DVD, Blu-ray, Amazon Video digital HD

Belly up to Elly’s C

hicago. City of the Big Shoulders. It’s funny for people native to Arizona. We see our population exploding with expats and snowbirds from the Windy City who are tired of their brutal winters, longing for the eternal sunshine and wide open spaces of the desert. They come here and try to make it exactly like Chicago. Even their gangsters move here. Cox Communications has an entire channel devoted to nothing but Chicago news. Baseball’s spring training brings in planeloads of the nasal Midwesterners following their precious Cubbies and White Sox. After a few street tacos they gripe about how much they miss Chicago. So they bring their uniquely “Chicago” food with them. The ancient Land of the Anasazi is turning into the modern Land of Lincoln West. Don & Charlie’s, Chicago Hamburger Company, Oregano’s, Buddyz Chicago Pizzeria, Z’s Greek, Spinato’s, Portillo’s (have you ever had one of their tamales? Don’t. Ever.) and the Original Pancake House all hail from Chi-town. When Lou Malnati’s followed by Gino’s East opened, pandemonium erupted like the Haymarket Riots of 1886 over who has better pizza.

The newest Chicago export is Elly’s Brunch & Café. If there’s anything we can all get behind as Americans, it’s breakfast. Well, and brunch. The Chi-town mini-chain staked a claim in the rehabbed Uptown Plaza in Phoenix, bringing their beloved breakfasty goodness with them. The stark, super spartan dining room could use a splash of color and some art. It’s plain, but it has plenty of seating, so waiting shouldn’t be a problem. The hostesses and servers are cheery and hospitable. Elly’s full-range breakfast, brunch and lunch menu is well-rounded, with a dash international flair. There’s something for everyone from sea to shining sea. (Not just on Lakeshore Drive.) You’ll need a few visits to pick out your favorites. You don’t have to parlez-vous français to fall in love with Banana Nutella Crepes with crushed hazelnuts. C’mon! They’ve got Nutella! Three for $10 make a nice sharable dish for those with a sweet tooth. We’re yearning for Berry Mascarpone with seasonal mixed June 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 75

berries, vanilla, almond paste and mascarpone for $11.

Monte Cristo, Reuben, ‘Shroomed Patty Melt and more, including a couple of vegetarian friendly items, too. Eat like a movie star! Rave reviews for the Malibu, with hormone-free chicken breast, Applewood bacon, American cheese on a butter croissant. Tender and tasty, it’s tops for $11. Each sandwich comes with hand-cut or sweet potato fries. Add a large, crisp veggie salad for only $2 more.

Hearty eaters will tuck into the Homemade Corned Beef Hash with two poached eggs, onion and hashbrowns and your choice of toast or pancakes. (Go for those flapjacks. You can have toast at home.) We found the hash (imported from Chicago) a tad on the dry side, but satisfying. $11

Elly’s has a great selection of homemade brioche French toast, waffles, omelettes, morning sandwiches, fritattas, skillets, salads and bowls, all averaging around the $10 mark. We hear that their enormous Baked Apple and German Pancakes are spectacular

Four varieties of Eggs Benedict are a blessing. We opted for the Florentine style, topped with plenty of Applewood bacon, spinach, on an English muffin crowned with a fresh Hollandaise sauce so sweet and citrusy it reminded us of Lemon Meringue Pie. $11

Elly’s has enough on the menu to feed a whole herd of Mrs. O’Leary’s cows. But I hope she leaves them in Chicago. Welcome to Phoenix!

If it’s past noon and you’re looking for something more lunchy, Elly’s has 12 sandwiches, including favorites like a 76

HORSESHOE BEND► Five miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, near Page, you’ll find the famous Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River. The stunning overlook is heartstopping 4,214 feet above the river, but that didn’t scare daredevil Emm Jay ... one false step ...

DEVIL’S BRIDGE► The steep, but short hike up to Devil’s Bridge is a busy 4.4 mile round trip adventure, especially perfect for bird watching. Leashed dogs are welcome! The payoff was a breathtaking view of the legendary red rocks of Sedona for friends Brittney Chapman and Ryan Boehme

◀ Havasu Falls Helpful Hint: Whenever you travel and wherever you go, it’s a good idea to remember to pack a little Dramamine just in case you get a little nauseated or carsick. Emm Jay pretends he came down with a touch of travel sickness thanks to a little bit of camera trickery.

The landscape of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park includes the eternal West and East Mittens. The buttes are made of three principal rock layers. The lowest is Organ Rock Shale, the middle is de Chelly Sandstone, and the top layer is the Moenkopi Formation capped by Shinarump Conglomerate for you geology nerds.

e’ve all looked at the sky and imagined seeing unidentified flying objects. In this month’s Favorite Bitch®, these folks looked at their loved ones and saw something else. Things they never would’ve imagined ... identified foul objects!

— they’re daydreaming of turning his peaches into a warm cobbler!

Dear Miss Tiger,

— Levi

I’ve been dating someone for two weeks. I want to go down on him but he won’t let me at it! I couldn’t take it anymore so I ripped his pants off and discovered that he has vitiligo “down there.” Do you think he’s embarrassed about it or is he saving himself until we’re committed?

Dear Log Cabin,

— Martin Dear If He’s Saving Himself - I Guarantee Your Ass Won’t Be Getting A Jared’s Engagement Ring Anytime Soon, He wanted to tell you about his polka dotted dick when he was good and ready ... unfortunately you just have him seeing stripes instead! Speaking of patterns, looks like your thirst is out of vogue ... Dear Miss Tiger, My boyfriend’s ass is so big that gay guys stare at it in disbelief. I get embarrassed about it. What gives? — Jorge Dear While You’re Getting Embarrassed - Every Other Dude Is Getting Your Man’s Phone Number, FYI ... they ain’t staring in disbelief

Dear Miss Tiger, The guy I’m messing with has an ass as flat as a pancake. I’m afraid he can’t handle my heavy anaconda. Any advice?

Forget about pancakes. Save your maple syrup for a waffle that can handle your heavy pour ... Dear Miss Tiger, I traded pics with a dude on Hornet. When I zoomed in on his balls, it looked like they had crusty little bubbles on them. He said it was ingrown hairs from getting waxed. What do you think? — Kyle Dear I Think It’s Time To Block His Profile, The only bubbles I ever wanna come in contact with are the ones floating in my champagne. And on that note ... et’s play a game! Spot 184 differences in this picture and you can win a prize! The real, live and super-duper deluscious David Perre B (A) from Club Volt took a moment away from making my Pink Squirrel cocktails to pose next to his lifelike cutout promoting Tito’s® Handmade Vodka (they make me say all of that) “Sexiest Bartender Contest.” Believe-you-me, the real life “David” isn’t nearly as one-dimensional as the cutout and much more talkative. Much. Check him out for yourself! And drink Tito’s® Handmade Vodka. (Making sure. Product endorsement is everything.) Our spiciest Spice Girl, Barbra Seville (B) seen here during a rare moment “in mufti” as some guy called “Richard Stevens” (ever heard of him?) at Karamba’s for her 38th annual Cinco de Mayo “Salsa Challenge.” Or maybe it’s, like, the 7th. I still have “Sting Ring.” Wanna see a real hot tamale, muchachos? I thought so. Here’s the muy caliente Raúl Zubiate, Jr. (C) He is not promoting Tito’s® Handmade Vodka, but some really delicious

One hot day there were two gay car washes just scant yards from one another. Two! A very patriotic Jonny Stanciu (D) from the social group “#MoreThanBars” was waving his flagpole enticing drivers to clean up their buggy.

Just down the street that adorable Justin Mickey (E) was scrub-adub-dubbing vehicles to raise funds for the upcoming AIDS Lifecycle bike race in California. Decisions, decisions ... “WWHFD?” What Would Henry Ford Do? Wash your car. Twice. In a row. Worth it just to see these boys wet. Last month’s Phoenix Comicon is a cultural experience where enthusiasts of the fantastical get a chance to live out their weird dreams. And that’s where I ran into a few of our own Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (F) who dressed up as ... as ... well, as nuns, I guess, what else? I’m a big fan! My costume? A hack society news columnist. Nobody knew who I was. Go F figure.

It’s a good time to dedicate yourself to a good book. Taurus April. 21 - May 20 You go on a super shopping spree, show off. Don’t let mass consumerism spoil you, because it will.
