Welcome to Phoenix. The Best is Yet to Come!
Welcome to our expanded 132 page
Phoenix Pride 2010 edition. For the first time ever it includes the official Phoenix Pride Program starting on page 93.
ION Arizona has been working closely with national, local and non-profits organizations to help them grow and evolve. Here are a few of the new partnerships we’re working on now: US Census ION was fortunate enough to be a part of the United States Census 2010 ad campaign. For the first time ever the government has gone out of their way to reach out to our community. Do not disappoint. This is your chance to stand up and be counted. If you have already filled yours out, thank you! If you have not, do it now. See their ad to the left. Gay Bowl X Last fall we entered in a partnership with the Phoenix Hellraisers Flag Football league. ION Arizona was chosen as the exclusive local media sponsor of the first every Gay Bowl in Phoenix coming this October. The Gay Bowl X is still looking for more corporate sponsors. Check out their ad on page 54. Phoenix Pride Phoenix Pride 2010 is here! While there are great events all week, don’t miss the parade and festival, April 17-18. While I’m not too upset it follows my birthday (April 16 - I like iTunes cards, by the way) it’s a great event. Look for our parade entry, stop by our booth at the festival and get your souvenir picture on a beautiful cover of ION Arizona!

Michael Bublé This hot little Canadian crooner is the best thing to come out of the Great White North since William Shatner. Jason Castro The oh-so-dreamy dreadlocked Rastafarian finalist of American Idol of 2008 comes to Scottsdale to perform his own unique – if not particularly talented – goofy, yet adorable song stylings. Still, his sincerity is endearing. And he’s so darn hot, too. And who knows? If we’re lucky he may even bring his ukulele. Catch him between bong hits and chipwiches on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Martini Ranch, 7295 E. Stetson Dr. Phone: 480-970-0500

Yo, DJ! What’s New? Happy Pride, AZ! In celebration, check out new material from Delerium (remixes), Ferry Corsten, Melissa Etheridge, Natalie Merchant, MGMT as well as these great selections.
Usher
Raymond V Raymond Originally due late in 09, Usher finally emerges in 2010. After the industry leaks of many of his tracks, this album may be done before it’s started. Lead single “Hey Daddy” featuring Plies proves current while offering a good glimpse in to the rest of his 14 tracks and overall safe album. However, it’s on the bold and circus like “She Don’t Know” and the very catchy jam “OMG” where he shines brightest. And then there’s the moving yet soulful ballad “Foolin Around.” That track’s piano chord and classic R&B make up for a lack of creativity that was so evident on Confessions.
Rufus Wainwright
All Days Are Nights With the recent death of his mother, Rufus releases his sixth album with much sorrow and melancholy. Penned with 12 tracks; twelve of which are odes to Shakespearean sonnets, All Days showcases his voice with an uninterrupted sense of expression while sounding eerie and stripped down. This is most exemplified in the closing track “Zebulon” and the Muse-esque song “Who Are You.” But there are some bright spots as heard in the lead single as well as “Give me What I Want;” this album’s
“anthem.” Overall, those engulfed in the beauty, richness and pain of Rufus’ voice will find this album his purest to date.
David Byrne Here Lies Love
Fat Boy Slim and Byrne take a concept album and march to a beat that pays homage to Imelda Marcos. Though on paper the idea sounds weird, audibly, this album works perfectly. Getting help from famous lead vocalists doesn’t hurt either. This album is mostly a mesh of disco, funk, 60s songwriting and a touch of ska. On “You’ll be Taken Care of” Tori Amos showcase an amazing bossa nova beat while on “Here Lies Love” Florence takes happiness to the nth degree. Other notable songs include the Cyndi Lauper/Tori Amos duet “Why Don’t You Love Me” and Sharon Jones’ track “Don’t You Agree.”
Sharon Jones
I Learned the Hard Way For something completely different, check out this real songstress’ throwback to the 60s. With the use of the incredible band The Dap Kings (most known for their instrumentation behind Amy Winehouse), find solace in this gospel, funk, soulful and most authentic collection of brass infused jams. The first single and title track is just plain fun with its horn and foot stomping beat while “Without a Heart” gives you an inside glimpse into the Jackson 5. Other tracks of note include “When I Come Home” and “I’ll Still be True.” Loved by DJ’s and producers all over the world, find out why this queen is one to reckon with. April 2010

After an accident that prompts a reassessment of his life, he realizes he is, in fact, Gay and it’s time to take the bull by the horn, so to speak,
and suck the marrow out of life. Scheming and conning in the name of adventure, he ends up sharing a jail cell with Phillip Morris (MacGregor, Moulin Rouge) and falls head over heels in love. Now, it is up to him to use his scheming and conning ways to spring Phillip from the pokey and make good on their love affair. Absurdly hilarious, it’s a nice return to comedy for Carrey. Dan must learn, first-hand, if you can really teach old dogs new tricks. While the movie is certainly sweet in the way only a Disney film can be, I’m not entirely sure how it applies to ION’s audience. In an effort to make a connection, I’m thinking it may be one of two things – either because of the relationship between Dan and Charlie which, while strictly platonic, is fodder for a few “old gay couple” cracks at a Kiddie Camp, or perhaps it’s simply because of the “is he, or isn’t he?” rumors that surround John Travolta in his personal life. Whatever the case may be, the movie’s enjoyable enough.
fancy in which bullied high school student, Timothy, fashions a world more accepting of his homosexuality in the style of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” A visual feast and an original soundtrack make this piece a delight. Switching gears, our next selection is Brian Harris Krinsky’s “Dish”, about two emo boys, Israel and Louie, who gossip about the sexual escapades of their classmates. When it comes time for Israel to put a notch in his own virginal bedpost with the highlycoveted Ricky, he realizes he must decide how ready he is to leave the innocence of his youth behind. Next, Christopher Bank’s “Teddy” tells the bittersweet reunion of former lovers, Tony and Neil, while Patricia Bateria’s “Frequent Traveler” shows the lengths one man is willing to go in order to garner the attention of an Airport Security Guard. For the bear-lovers in the house, Greg Ivan Smith’s “The Back Room” shows how one artist’s work serves to bind a shy bookstore owner and a gruff mechanic. Closing out our adventure is the effervescent, witty musical “BoyCrazy” by John Sobrack. Corey flirts and flits from date to date, but when a new co-worker and an old friend both express an interest to take it to the next level, he must determine how serious he is about settling down. An enjoyable collection, this is a must see for film buffs everywhere.
Boy Crazy
In another more audience-specific movie review, Wolfe Video brings us a collection of delightful short films called “BoyCrazy.” Six in all, the collection is book-ended by two musical pieces. Tom Gustafson’s “Fairies” is a gorgeous flight-ofApril 2010

The dining room is bathed in a sophisticated, cool, blue light, and the atmosphere is a class act all the way with an accent on understated elegance. Just like a single, perfect American Beauty rose. First of all, be aware that everything is fresh – including the seafood – and prepared on the premises. Sauces, salad dressings, soups. Everything. My Florist only has one tiny refrigerator, and that’s for the desserts’ ice cream. But you can act every bit as fresh as you like, too. Start of with their bruschetta. No shrinking violets here. You can choose four out of eight varieties offered. If you’ve got a sweet tooth we recommend the Port Poached Pear with Gorgonzola. Ted Allen
or the third year in a row, Dining Out for Life has enlisted America’s debonair Food and Wine Guru Ted Allen as spokesperson for this popular nationwide fundraising event for local HIV/AIDS organizations and charities. Since his appearance as the culinary expert on the Emmy award winning series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Allen has forged a respected career as a writer, author and a TV personality on The Food Network with Food Detectives and Chopped. A true gentleman in every respect, the charming Allen paused between canapés and a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape to discuss Dining Out for Life and what it brings to everyone’s communities. ION: Why is “Dining Out for Life” still important today?
Ted Allen: Your question points exactly to the problem: HIV and AIDS. We get so many signals that tell us that HIV is over and it’s not. It’s just changed. “Dining Out for Life” approached me three years ago and I jumped at the chance because it’s such a perfect fit in my mind. Whenever you’re trying to raise money one of the first places anybody goes to is the restaurant community; they always step up. They’re such a generous group of people. What I like about this fundraiser is on the one hand it raises four million dollars in a single day. It also gives something back to the restaurant – it exposes them to a new body of people who hopefully will come back if the food is good. Obviously the real heroes in the fight against HIV/AIDS are the activists who devote their lives to it, but for people who can’t do that, it allows anybody to make a truly meaningful contribution in the fight against AIDS by going out to dinner with friends. That’s probably why it’s so successful. It’s in more than 50 cities now. ION: As national spokesperson for this event, what is your idea of a perfect “Dining Out for Life” evening? TA: Why stop at dinner? There are people who go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner which is kind of decadent, but hey, it means no dish washing and it’s a really good excuse to go out and try some new stuff. You know, what about Drinking Out for Life? ION: You’ve written several books called ‘Things A Man Should Know’ about style, sex, handshakes, marriage, etiquette and more. Tell us something everybody should know about “Dining Out for Life.”

TA: Well, I’d love to see people really appreciate the incredible hard work, generosity and artistry or their local independent chefs. To work in that world takes so much sacrifice, such long days. I have so much admiration for what they do, managing to get that dish out on your plate, perfectly, consistently, day in and day out. I don’t know why it works. I don’t know why fast food restaurants work, it’s so hard. Despite the great advances we’ve made in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS the problem is still there and still really big. People still need our help. You know what people should really know? That every single dime that is raised in Phoenix, Arizona, is spent in Phoenix, Arizona. So you’re not only contributing to your local small business, many of which may are struggling in this economy, but all the money raised for HIV/AIDS is going right back into your own community to help people next door, and I think people really respond to that, especially at a time like this. ION: What advice would you like to give to each restaurant who sponsors “Dining Out for Life” about the evening and their guests? TA: I think that this is a time to be especially celebratory and theatrical. It’s a great time to come up with some really great, fresh, seasonal specials. It’s nice to think about organic or sustainable cooking, especially since some of our seas are overfished. We want to be thinking about food that will keep on producing in a healthy, sustainable way. That’s a good start! ION: What will you and your partner Barry Rice be doing on the evening of “Dining Out for Life” this year?
TA: I think we’re gonna go to the place where it all started, in Philadelphia. I know we’re gonna wanna get a bite to eat at Jose Garces restaurant, Amada. He’s also one of our spokesmen and the newest Iron Chef on the Food Network. But I think we’re gonna bounce around and try to cause as much trouble as possible. ION: Give us five fabulous guests you and Barry would like to have at your own dinner table for this event. TA: Okay! Johnny Depp, Dorothy Parker, Oscar Wilde, Johnny Weir ... let’s see, let’s get someone else cute in the mix. Umm ... how ‘bout that cute blonde kid from Weeds? I think his name is Hunter [Parish]. I hope he’s not too young. I don’t want to get in trouble. We’ll seat him next to Johnny. ION: You wrote a book, “The Food You Want to Eat.” So, Ted, what’s your own favorite dish? It’s really hard to narrow it down to one. It’s so hard. What I really like is variety. I might make some of the PETA people made but I made rabbit the other day and it was so good. We cook all the time and we love it. One thing I’m interested right now is cooking tagine – the Moroccan clay pot. There’s a lot of ingredients, but it’s not hard. It’s like making a stew but you don’t stir. It’s a really interesting way to cook. ION: Thank you so much! It’s great speaking with you. It’s just like talking to – well – Ted Allen! TA: Yes! Just like him! Thank you for your time and your interest. It’s been a real privilege. This fundraiser is so important and it really does make a great impact. We couldn’t do it without you.

The Unsinkable
Tammie Brown by Deon Brown 72
www.IONAZ.com April 2010
Hey there, Pumpkin Blasters! That’s “Tammie speak” for “Hey, buddy!” The warm, endearing and eternally quirky Miss Tammie Brown is the vivacious alter ego of the charming Keith Glen Schubert from Long Beach, California by way of Corpus Christi, Texas. He burst onto America’s TV sets last year as a contestant on season one of RuPaul’s Drag Race and captivated fans with her verve and unique character. Tammie shares with ION readers a little bit about her madcap world while she gets ready to make the Valley of the Sun “Clam Happy” when she visits Forbidden and Apollo’s this month to “Shakabuku U.” It’ll all make sense when you see Tammie. ION: What makes Miss Tammie Brown tick? Tammie Brown: Just breathing in this fresh air that was given to us on this wonderful planet! ION: You endeared yourself to people across America on RuPaul’s Drag Race, season one. Why do your audiences love you so much? TB: Because I’m true myself. Because I’m creative and zany, and fun. And a bit wacky, too. The experience on Drag Race was rather hard. The challenges were really hard to do in a short amount of time. But I am thankful for the response of people; that they’ve noticed me and have taken to who I am. ION: Tammie Brown is frequently
described as “quirky.” Is that accurate? TB: Yes, that’s accurate. I am rather quirky. I’m just fun - havin’ a good time! Crazy things come out of my mouth. Some have said “quirky.” Some have said “wacky.” And “kooky.” ION: What are your favorite pastimes? TB: Cooking, hanging out with my friends, collecting records. I like to go to thrift stores. I collect a plethora of things. Things that are fun, kitschy stuff, clothes, brooches, things that I can make into jewelry. I’ve made jewelry since I was in college in Texas, where I got my degree in fashion design. ION: What can your Arizona audience expect at a Tammie Brown show? TB: A real good time! They’ll be able to connect with me and to smile. ION: What’s the most important thing about Tammie Brown? TB: I keep it real. I like to connect to the audience, with the people. So if anybody likes to come up to me and say “hi” and talk to me, I like to connect with them, sign autographs, and really mean it. I really appreciate the fans I have out there. Hunter & Jessica,

ION: You’re fluent Spanish. Has Tammie Brown ever performed for her Latino fans? ION: You described yourself to RuPaul as “a high concept character.” Tell me more. Well, you know, like Pee Wee Herman, or even Joan Crawford because she stuck to her character so much. Jackie Beat is a high concept character; so is Josephine Baker. But I’m pretty much always Tammie Brown. ION: Picture this. It’s 1945. The War is over. MGM Studios has just cast you to star in your first musical picture. What’s the title and who’s your costar? TB: “I Believe In Wigs.” And my costar would have to be Clark Gable. No, maybe Franchot Tone.
TB: Yes, I have. I’ve performed here in LA at some Latino venues. They kind of listen a little more. They’re listening and watching, but they haven’t quite caught on yet, but they do “get” me. People approach me after the show and speak to me in Spanish. And I get posts on Facebook in Spanish. I think it’s a good thing. The Latino audiences are a lot more accepting, more versatile than the average American audience. They’re more into schtick and character. And a lot more zaniness. ION: Your album “Popcorn” is available on iTunes. Tell us a little bit about it. TB: These are songs that I’ve written and songs that were written for me. “Shakabuku U” is a term used introducing people to Buddhism. “The Tammie Brown Blues” is sort of a story of the kind of crap you hear when you do drag. Stereotypes. “The Mash Potato Squash” is something I penned. I was inspired by Ike and Tina Turner’s “Shake Your Tailfeathers” so I made that up. “Whatever” is a social commentary done to electro music. The idea for “The Ballad of Tiger Lilly” came from by my best friend and creative partner, Rod Barroso.

He always gets psychic premonitions about songs I’m going to perform in my future and he ends up writing them. It’s so random! He says I’m his Muse. Like Divine and John Waters, or Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino. He gets visions at the strangest times, stops everything and tells me about some new song he’s come up with. Or I’ll say something goofy and he says, “That’s genius” and writes it down. So I took the song to my accompanist, ukulele player extraordinaire Stacy Lee Big, and we added more lyrics about space and cookies, and voilá – a hit is born! Then we shot the video and – violá! A Youtube viral video sensation is born! You can see “Tiger Lilly” with other videos on Youtube, as well as many of my live performances.
ION: What motto do you live by?
Lately I’ve been in the studio the past two months working on my next album called “Hot Skunkz.”
ION: Give us one piece of fabulous advice.
ION: We love your infectious song, “Clam Happy.” What makes you “Clam Happy”? TB: What makes me Clam Happy? Haribo Gummi Bears, Tina Turner, doing this interview, my fans, gardening, collecting records. I collect Ike and Tina Turner records and I still collect her records, too. I collect Sylvester, Divine, and I need to find one RuPaul. Either “Foxy Lady” or “Supermodel” – a single or an album. Lots of disco. Different things. Pop culture things. ET drinking glasses. Things like that. ION: If aliens landed in front of you, and in exchange for anything you desire, offered to make you Queen of their planet, what would you want? TB: To meet Tina Turner on The Oprah Winfrey Show for my 31st birthday and have her do a mini-concert.
TB: “Be true to yourself.” And “Pursue your dreams.” ION: Name three things you can’t live without. TB: Friends and family – that’s very important to me – a glue stick, and Kiss Nails. ION: If you could be any movie character who would you be? TB: I think I would be Joan Crawford in “When Ladies Meet.” Or you know what? No. I’d rather be Dustin Hoffman in “Tootsie.” There you go. I think he’s really pretty and I relate to his clothing.
TB: Always make sure to look your best! In and out of the house. ION: If you were a superhero, what would your superhero powers be? TB: To make sure that everybody’s smiling! You’ll be grinning from ear-to-ear when you see pop culture phenomenon Miss Tammie Brown perform live with our very own Force of Nature, Barbra Seville, live and in person at The Showroom at Forbidden on Saturday night, April 24. Can’t get enough? Tammie and Barbra team up again the next night, Sunday, April 25 at Apollo’s Lounge. So fasten your wigs and hold on to your pantyhose! This is a performance you won’t want to miss. uring the early 90s Maria Jose served as the lead singer of the famous Mexican group Kabah. The act quickly became a household name and went on to rack up a number of accolades. However, as they say, “All good things must come to an end.” The group parted ways in 2005. Fortunately, the end of Kabah was the beginning of Maria Jose’s career as a solo artist. In 2007, she introduced her self titled debut album. Then in 2009, thanks to the success of the first album, Maria Jose released her sophomore album Amante de lo Ajeno. Audiences in Phoenix will see her live on stage when she performs at Forbidden Nightclub on Saturday, April 17th for Club Papi’s 3rd Annual Gay Pride Weekend Extravaganza. ION: You’re teaming up with the largest gay promoters Club Papi and Granda Entertainment, for a gay tour. Tell me about it. Maria Jose: It’s a wonderful opportunity for me. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the gay tour from my other friends, like Gloria Trevi who have already participated. I am so happy and excited to work with them. I’ll be in a number of cities! ION: What can the audience expect to see in your show? MJ: I’m very devoted to my fans and look forward to performing for those who have yet to see me live on stage. So, you can bet that I’ll be singing my heart out. It’s just me and the audience. One thing I do not like is when singers feel they are untouchable. There is nothing like having a close relationship with your audience. ION: Have you ever been to a gay club? MJ: Of course! If you really want to have fun, then partying at a gay club is the way to go. Everyone is so warm and outgoing that there is no way you will be bored. ION: Tell us about the new CD.
MJ: It consists of 11 covers that became hits thanks to a number of voices from divas in the 80’s. The album has been a huge hit here in Mexico because it reunites the nostalgia of a generation and it sounds so fresh that the new generations identify with it as well. ION: Are there any artists that you would like to team up with in the future? MJ: I love to share the stage with anyone who likes doing music. It doesn’t matter what genre they sing. When 2 completely different singers get together, great and unexpected things can happen. ION: Gloria Trevi is such a huge fan of the gay community. In fact, she did three gay tours, which were very successful. Have you ever had the chance to work with her? MJ: Yes, we worked together on the song “Vive,” which was on Kabah’s final album. It was quite emotional because she was still in prison. We went to visit her a few times while she was still there. The song was recorded while she was incarcerated. A few days after her legal situation cleared and as she was released, ironically the album was released. It was great. We remain close friends. ION: Speaking of Kabah, you were with them for 13 years. How was that experience? MJ: Kabah is my family, my school and my all. The experience I have on stage is because of my time with Kabah. We still get a long as a family, so much so that we even get together once a month for dinner. Welcome to Phoenix Pride 2010! In 1981, a group of gay & lesbian activists organized the first Pride march thru the streets of downtown Phoenix to the state Capitol building. It was a politically focused march to bring public awareness to gay rights issues in Phoenix. Thirty years later, Phoenix Pride fully embraces the message of visibility in our mission to celebrate and promote the history, diversity, and future prosperity of the metropolitan Phoenix LGBT community. We see public awareness of and education about the LGBT community as a means to combat homophobia, transphobia and discrimination. Over the past year, our long-range strategic initiative to increase LGBT community visibility is being realized through the continuation of existing programs such as the Pride Festival, Pride Parade and the Pride Royalty Pageant along with the introduction of new programs, the Pride Gala (Community Awards event) and OUTdayPHX (a celebration of National Coming OUT Day). These new annual programs are highly-publicized and well-received events meant to include both private and commercial community allies, leaders, government officials and politicians, as well as the LGBT community. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Joan Jett’s icon status as a pop culture symbol of what women can achieve continues to grow throughout the world. “Fit To Be Tied” is Joan’s first greatest hits CD, (out on Mercury) to the delight of all her fans. With a new Joan Jett and the Blackhearts album due on Warners in the fall, a Runaways retrospective due, and a role in the film “Boogie Boy” by Pulp Fiction alums Craig Hamann and Roger Avary, Joan Jett is poised on a unique historic moment to honor her past and celebrate her future. Joan, perhaps the first female artist to own her own record label, has expanded that part of her universe by joining forces with her original record company, Mercury/Universal, to distribute Blackheart Records through a major label for the first time and to revitalize the already impressive catalog sales of The Runaways, by retooling and re-configuring the works of Mercury’s original “bad girl” rock & roll band.

Millions Report “Census Too Hard.” Many Fail
WASHINGTON D.C. – Ten simple questions made the 2010 Census the easiest ever. Still, over 25 million Americans received an “F” filling out the questionnaire attempting to count every man, woman and child in the USA. Experts blame the poor showing on stupidity.

Horace Ann Woolbright of Amarillo, Texas complained of the high degree of difficulty. “It was too hard. They were askin’ all kinds of crazy shit. H
e’s the Boy Next Door – with a wild streak. We only wish Brent Corrigan lived next door. Brent has created a niche for himself as a hugely popular star in Gay adult films since his teens. He’s gone on to appear in other movies including Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild! and Milk. ION received an exclusive interview with the lickable and likable Brent where he discusses the real meat and potatoes behind his – uh, well – meat and potatoes. You’ll be surprised. See Brent in person when he makes a celebrity appearance at Forbidden on Thursday, April 8 from 6-9 p.m. with the DVD release party of The Big Gay Musical! from Embrem Entertainment. ION: What’s the best part of being “Brent Corrigan”? Brent Corrigan: The best part of being Brent Corrigan is the position I am in to do more than what people expect of me. I know most anticipate I’ll hang back, shoot some porn, maybe get lucky with a role on an occasional queer indie film and laugh all the way to the bank. My hope is that from my place in society there is help I can provide; a role that I play in making our community a little better for my generation and the next one. Am I saying Brent Corrigan is going to change the world single handedly, absolutely not! I have faith that much of the gay community can recognize the value beyond my perch in the adult industry and what makes me “a person of note.” Ultimately, I guess I’m saying the best part of being me is that I’m fortunate that you want to talk to me so I can send a broader message about what people just see of me on the surface of things.
drawn to the fact that someone, or anyone, would actually want to watch me do such intimate acts on camera. But as I developed my first adult company and began to get in touch with the industry (including my fans and viewers) my reasoning for staying on and involved was drastically different. I direct and produce adult work today because I want to be part of that percentage of the industry that sets a good example for the community. I figured out for myself at 19 that this work could be just as titillating when produced under safe, comfortable circumstances. While, yes, it is adult, there are different degrees of objectification. What I work to do with my productions is reveal more of the models stepping foot in front of the camera, so share and reveal more of them than just the physical. I discovered the need to do this when I became cognizant of one the reasons fans and viewers gravitated so fervently toward me. I’m forthcoming and generous with all of myself. Not just the sexual aspect of my job. I share my thoughts, my interests and try to stay involved with politics and social issues. ION: What turns you on? BC: I love seeing people working together for the greater good of everyone; not just themselves. One example is how we rallied to protest the passing of Prop 8. Last year, something like 22,000 people showed up in San Diego
ION: How does it feel to be the object of lust for so many men worldwide? BC: Would you believe me if I told you I don’t think about that often at all? I try to avoid the thought most of the time. Admittedly, when I got in to the work I was fascinated and April 2010

where I live to demonstrate peacefully and show the world we are here and not to be discarded. It was extremely exhilarating; and not in a way that a Pride parade is! It’s a shame we don’t have more direct and visual leadership in our plight for equality. It is there but so many don’t know where to find it. I get all of my up to date information at www. EQCA.org and receive and read Geoff Kors’ e-mail notifications for all of the latest news, who’s the Executive Director. The community is our home and so many of us have immersed ourselves in it, but it’s not where the world begins and ends. I love meeting people who know and recognize that there is a great big world out there; beyond the gayborhood and out of the club scene. A great day to me is sunshine and exploring a state park or enjoying an afternoon horseback riding. I live in San Diego and it’s an insult to Mother Nature not to get out and enjoy her good company regularly. I’ve been horseback riding since I was five and I have a horse in southern San Diego where I ride on the beach. This world is full of natural, breathtaking wonders and it’s a shame that as a society so many of us, particularly our young people, are embarrassingly out of touch with it. I’m big in to film and I have an insatiable appetite for it. I wish I had more time to attend film festivals. I wish I had more time to read. Because I work from home I rely on music to help move my day along. I love indie rock and folk music. ION: Rumor is that you’re writing a book. Can you share what it’s about? 112
www.IONAZ.com April 2010
BC: It’s not a rumor at all! I’ve been writing for a few months now, but we are taking it slower than originally anticipated. On the business side of things, when you release a book there are proper “seasons” to do so, to ensure that it doesn’t get lost and it is afforded the proper amount of attention it deserves. Because of this, it’s been a bit of a mad dash trying to get it done and worked out. Now that I know I have a little more time, I can relax a little bit and explore the the process of writing. The book isn’t meant to be an autobiography because, frankly, let’s be honest: at this time in my life I don’t think there is a whole lot of interest in my early years as a child. People are obviously very curious about my experiences growing up, getting into the adult industry, developing my own companies and of course the murder investigation and trial I was a witness in. Subject matter aside, I am working to write something that is intense but easy to read. Thematically, it’s a little bit of a cautionary tale. Though predominately, it’s a story about one young man and his journey as he navigates a seemingly difficult and complex world. ION: What would you like ION readers to know about you that might surprise them? BC: A surprise is a very subjective thing. Oh, I don’t know ... I think people are most surprised at how normal I am. I’m mentally and emotionally enduring. Sure, I have my goals and I daydream but I am sensible, realistic and unpretentious. Maybe there was a time when I wanted to be this great big star, which is partially why I was drawn to the adult industry – but now I see there is more to be had than just attention. I just wanted people to like me. For a long time I was
virtually invisible! I was a very unpopular kid growing up and thought I had more to offer. I believe a lot of individuals who gravitate toward entertainment think they might relish in the attention. For me, this has become more about getting where I’m going next and not letting the adult, or even what acting I do accomplish, be all that defines me. When I deal with major misconceptions usually it’s the stereotypes that people have applied to adult stars and how in most ways, they don’t work with me. I’m proud of that. ION: We hear that you’ve been involved in activist work lately. Tell us more. BC: I keep involved and well informed with the marriage equality fight here in California. Before Proposition 8 passed, I was working the trenches to reach the general public on a personal level to help educate and inform them about what voting NO on proposition 8 really meant. There was a lot of misinformation and lies that were created by the proponents of the proposition and they circulated madly. More recently and even more important, is the work I am doing with an organization called FUK!T. A controversial name for a controversial cause. It’s a safe sex awareness organization in Washington, D.C. that develops PSA’s on safe sex, informing and teaching people about risks of unsafe sex as well as how to properly protect yourself and roll on a condom. You’d be surprised at how few people know how to effectively use protection. Matthew Rush, a living adult icon today, is also involved with the organization. Sadly, D.C. has the highest rate of HIV infection. The worst part is that we’ve seen an alarming spike in the 18-23 age range.
Everything I produce with my company is safe despite my arguably sordid background. I feel it’s my responsibility to the community and the young people to counteract a seemingly poor example I set by just participating in my early films. My one wish, however, is that there was a stronger sense of togetherness in the industry and gay community. I wish we would see more older gay men properly mentoring the youth they are involved with. Protecting yourself is a habit that has to be learned and used every single time. It’s extremely easy for older gentlemen to forget just how misguided an 18 year old boy can be in thinking nothing can hurt them. We all want to live long and flourish but we must adopt and maintain principles that can make that happen. Together. ION: What does the future hold for you?
April 2010
www.IONAZ.com 113
BC: I see a lot of writing this summer. That’s probably my biggest priority. I’m going to take in a road trip to The Redwoods of Northern California this summer and a camping trip in the Black Hills of Montana. I’m in talks to develop a talk show but we’ve only just begun development and you never really know with projects of the entertainment vein this early on. I’m shooting a film called Judas Kiss this August taking on one of the lead roles. All of this of course while running the new streaming website, my third adult company, at www. TheNewBrentCorrigan.com. Long term? I’ve always liked the idea of pooling queer artists, photographers, writers and filmmakers of all walks of life and developing a place where they can come together and collaborate for the greater good of the scene. It’s something I would to be a part of but I wouldn’t want to attempt it all alone. I want to be one part of something that is much greater than myself, something that brings culture and the world to the community. Something of substance and intrigue. ION: What advice would you give to young, Gay men? BC: Define and develop yourself. Even if you don’t know what you want, just get in to everything. Be sure to maintain interests and hobbies, even if it’s just reading or playing pool. Go to school but don’t expect that to reveal for you what you want to do with your life. A degree is important but we all know it doesn’t automatically define who you are or what you are going to do. It doesn’t even guarantee you a job these days! Never forget that there is so much more to be had than a great paycheck and a good time. Namely, that means there is more to life than working and spending Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the club. Protect yourself and use condoms every time. I honestly don’t think there are enough prominent Gay figures putting that thought out there often. Wait 114

until you’re 20 before seriously taking on any possible adult aspirations. I wish I had. A lot changes between 18 and 20. You’re just going to have to trust me on that one. Don’t float through life and expect that you’re going to be just fine. Conserve water and try to remember to recycle - even if it’s just your plastic water bottles. ION: You’re nothing if not controversial. From performing in adult films while underage, testifying in a scandalous murder trial, to having director Michael Lucas protest your appearance at the 2009 Gay VN Awards. What do you make of this? How do you stay centered today? BC: I think you just have to be strong willed and determined not to let the little things stand in your way. If I was worried about what people thought of me, I would have left all of this behind when the truth about my age broke. I was under severe persecution. The whole of the industry needed to believe that one minor single handedly created the situation that put it all in jeopardy – it was easier for them to pawn the responsibility of one adult company’s actions off on a single little boy. The producer of that first company released the content he had stockpiled of me, which was shot of me as a legal adult, with scathingly hurtful titles that will follow me for the whole of my life. Through it all, I learned the value of what matters most in life. There is a vocal minority that will try to tear you down. You can’t take what you read in comments or written on blogs online and invest much in it at all today. Of course, I had one or two mentors that, at the time, helped me hold things together. Unfortunately, today these people are no longer in my life. The point is, I attempted to surround myself with good influences that could brace and help me navigate tough times. ION: You’ve appeared in several

“mainstream” movies of Gay interest, including the recently released picture, “The Big Gay Musical” in a brief, but pivotal role as an escort. Can you comment on this experience? BC: My one scene in the movie was shot in an afternoon, so the experience itself was a bit frenzied. Mine was the last scene to film, on the last day of 28 days of production I think. Everyone was warn ragged, which is completely understandable on a picture like that. What was most rewarding was getting a chance to meet actors Daniel Robinson, Joey Dudding, The writer and producer Fred Caruso and director Casper Andreas. Considering my background and my usual mode and genre in film; it’s very easy for other actors and people in production to warrant discrimination against me. The cast and particularly Fred and Casper were extremely professional and treated me as an equal. They embraced me as one of their own; even if I was only incorporated at the

very tail end of the shoot. I’ve found on a few of the mainstream films I have worked on now how prevalently curious these actors are in what it’s like working on my side of the industry. It sort of gives me a feeling of validity though I know there are so few similarities that can be drawn between queer indie cinema and the adult industry. ION: If you were a superhero, what would your superpowers be? BC: To heal people on a widespread scale, but I would want to be able to do so without recognition. Oh, sure, it would be amazing to be able to turn invisible, fly or even shape shift into all kinds of animals. I fail to see how fulfilling those things would be in the end! I have always felt the need to make a positive impact on the world. I guess I’m going about it a strange way; working in the adult industry, playing hustlers in Big Gay Musicals and writing trashy beach novels. ION: Can I kiss you when we meet? BC: I’ll reserve a plot of prime real estate for you on my right cheek. I’m a good boy!

It’s Pride! And we love a parade! Throw in a some floats with drag queens, some go-go boys, and politicians waving from convertibles followed by a tip-top festival with great entertainment and vendors selling anything they can slap a rainbow on and – voilá – you’ve got Gay Pride! But I still miss the porn stars. Good news, my lushes! Amsterdam has just opened a VIP room called “Rare” with former ‘Dam doorman, the charming Nicholas manning the booze and the seltzer bottles on weekends. The specialties are vintage cocktails like a Vodka Stinger, Aviator and a Sidecar. But, Nicky, darling, can you make me a Pink Squirrel? How I look forward to a revival of a more elegant way of life. Tell Nicholas that Addison sent you. And ask for a Pink Squirrel, sister. A Saturday night at Charlie’s is always a hoot and a holler. Our Councilman Tom Simplot discussed politics with pal State Senator Ken Cheuvront (not really. But I want you to believe your elected officials are always working for you.) Greg Early and my new crush Kevin Axe accompanied them. Now if only Kevin knew that.
The Arizona Republic’s Senior Features editor Stacy Sullivan was armwrestling me for bruschetta with caviar from Cheuvront’s and I pinched blue-eyed darling’s Matthew Bowman’s flank steak at Ticoz’ booth. My Florist Café’s eye-catching manager Keith Lukasavage and his sig-o, the lovely Rachel Walker sampled canapés while enjoying a little chardonnay, which did not come from a box. Why don’t they have an event like that in Haiti, or in Chile? Word at the Capitol is that the the handsome Kobalt bartender Travis Edwards may throw his hat in the ring in the race for the Arizona State Legislature for District 15. He’s smart, good looking, and I have every confidence in Travis, even though I was told he once slammed his own head in a car door without suffering any long term effects. Outside of wanting to get into
The Devoured Culinary Classic at the Phoenix Art Museum was a hit, even though David Smith had to restrain me from stealing a Waterford vase from an unmanned vintners booth before closing and after I drank several glasses of Pinot something-or-other and gobbled down more Key Lime Tarts than I care to admit. politics. And he’s so darn cute! I can’t wait about hear his platform – shoes, that is! From the he-mail bag: Here’s a reminder from your dentist always to remember to floss while you’re drinking. Looks like Borat’s distant cousin Jamie Hamilton sailed from Auckland to Sydney with Atlantis Cruises via the Holland America Rotterdam dubbed “The Vomitdam” after a particularly seasickening crossing. Take a look. Take a good, long, hard look. You know, boys, nothing says “Hot Gay Vacation” to me like a neon green single on an Atlantis cruise. No, I am not making this up. And here’s an actual, unretouched photo of Jamie proving that he can rock out with his cock-tail out. Even if he has to leave the country and go to another hemisphere to do it. Snap, girlfriend! Special thanks to our reader Chris Ries for this submission. Keep ‘em coming, fans! Congratulations to the Party Penguin of the Month, LeRoy Eswonia! Part of Phoenix Hellraiser’s Flag Football, LeRoy’s also an athletic supporter! He’s pictured here at a recent fundraiser at Charlie’s for the Hellraiser’s new Phoenix Hoops GLBT Basketball League, where he dressed like a streetwalker and pranced around in women’s clothing to raise money. Now that’s dedication! If not good taste. I 128

would’ve never worn that top with those tights. We’ll see you at Pride! And remember, Pride is a personal commitment. It’s an attitude which separates excellence from mediocrity. And it lasts all year long. Not just for a weekend, poppets. Diamonds are forever. And so are pictures of your friends in a singlet or something else they might not published for everyone to see. That’s why you should do it. Do it now. Send me those pictures and other scandalizing news you think I should know about to RumorHound@aol.com.

Aries Mar. 21 - Apr. 20
Look in the mirror and tell me what you see. Need a hint? You are a vibrant, caring human being. Much like Tori Spelling. If this is your birthday month, remember to count your blessings. And your pennies. And nickels. And dimes. And then you can splurge! But don’t go overboard.
Taurus Apr. 21 - May 20
The grass actually is greener on your side of the fence. So tell the kids to get off your lawn. If it’s your birthday month, take time to smell the roses on your side of the fence, too. And tiptoe through the tulips. Take your time.
Gemini May 21 - June 21
You’re a little bit loonier than usual this month. Frankly, it has more than a few of us baffled. Pay attention. Try to stay focused and on track. Organizing your underwear drawer is a good start.
Cancer June 22 - July 22
The best advice for you is to go home and listen to Duran Duran’s Greatest Hits over and over. See if you can make any sense out of “Hungry Like the Wolf” and let us know. It’ll keep you busy in the meantime.
Leo July 23 - Aug. 22
You’ve got a Sagittarius that’s been in your hair for weeks now. Sit down. Be calm. Look them in the eye and say, “Just stop it.” See how easy that was? Problem solved.
Virgo Aug. 23 - Sep. 22
You wield more power than you know this month. People who love you are looking 130

for guidance. Consider your answers carefully. But tell that Aries that shirt really isn’t right for them.
Libra Sep. 23 - Oct. 22
Yes. No. Maybe. You’ll find yourself saying that a lot this month. Just for kicks, turn one of those “No’s” into a “Yes.” You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Very pleasantly surprised.
Scorpio Oct. 23 - Nov.23
The look on your face when you get a big surprise this month from an Aquarian will be priceless. Make sure someone has a camera to capture the moment. And smile.
Sagittarius Nov. 23 - Dec. 23
You might want to put the brakes on something you thought was “full steam ahead.” It’s just a hunch. It’ll pay off in the long run. Be patient.
Capricorn Dec. 23 - Jan. 20
Now, honestly. What would you do with a pony if you had one? Something you always thought you wanted ends up being not such a good idea. And vice-versa. You’ll be amazed what it turns out to be, too.
Aquarius Jan. 21 - Feb. 19
Mind your p’s and q’s. Dot your i’s and cross your t’s. It’s not as hard as you think it is. But attention to detail is a plus this month. I said, “Pay attention!” That’s better.
Pisces Feb. 20 - Mar. 20
Hey, foxy! Your savoir-faire carries you through the month. That and a really good hairdo. Remember to give away two compliments for every one that you receive. It’s good for your karma and will keep you in check.
