Abbey Road Sessions Though looking like yet another “Greatest Hits” package, Kylie takes a 180 degree turn and creates a 16-track unplugged album of sorts, yet not really all that acoustic. Compared to what we’ve grown to love, this album comes off as a Las Vegas lounge feast, packed with jazz undertones and a phrasing that takes some getting used to. Strangely enough, it works. Standout tracks prove to be the folk infused “I Believe in You” and “Love at First Sight,” as well as the creative and pulsating string arrangement of “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” GRADE: B
Delerium
Music Box Opera It’s been six years since their last release and in this attempt Delerium moves toward the center of pop. Yes, I said pop! Gone are the weird, otherworldly instrumentations and in its place are ethereal, dreamy, lush undertones. As expected, find amazing support from great vocalists—Leona Ness, Kristy Thirsk and Leigh Nash, to name a few. Lead single “Monarch” channels a Middle Eastern flavor with vocals that soften the edges, while “Days Turn into Nights” and the instantly captivating “Chrysalis Heart” resonate with a sublime sense of electronica. GRADE: B+
Calvin Harris
18 Months Thanks to Rihanna, Calvin Harris is now a commercial success. Though
Yo, DJ! What’s New? most known for production credits with the likes of LMFAO, Kylie and Tiesto, Harris is packaging his recent collaborations as his third concept album. More like a radio hits album, 18 months spawns the previous tracks of “Bounce” featuring Kelis’ “Feel So Good” and “We Found Love.” Separately, the tracks work great as singles. However as a group, some cohesion is lost. Newly introduced single featuring Florence Welch is one of this set’s best, as is the guest appearance by Ellie Goulding. GRADE: C+
Christina Aguilera
Lotus For her seventh studio album, Aguilera ditches longtime collaborator Linda Perry for the current Max Martin. Bionic’s flop forces this diva to get creative, as she did on Stripped, but with a sense of self-expression that screams, “Freedom!” Combine that with her success as a coach on “The Voice” and the stage is set for the perfect rebirth. Lead single “Body” proves safe with its electronic edge, but it’s the angry “Army of Me,” the collaboration with Cee Lo called, “Make the World Move” and the haunting angst of “Blank Page,” that demonstrate brilliance. The Raven (2012)
Starring: John Cusack, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson, Luke Evans After a long sabbatical, Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack) returns to his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland as a fading star. Struggling with writer’s block, he’s instead turned to writing literary criticisms that rarely find their way into the local newspaper. This frustration quickly gives way as the town becomes consumed by the terror wrought by a serial killer whose modus operandi bears a striking resemblance to the tortured deaths featured in many of Poe’s nightmarish works. Though initially a suspect, Poe quickly becomes the chief consultant on the case working closely with detective Emmett Fields (Evans). After Poe’s clandestine fiancée Emily Hamilton (Alice Eve) is abducted, the pair must race against the clock to save her using whatever means possible before she, too, is nevermore.

Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), The Raven is the latest installation in the biographical fiction genre that has brought us other films, such as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Though the concept is an interesting one, there are times where it fails to translate. Cusack’s Poe comes across more as an aging, angstridden teen than a tortured artist. Lincoln Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt In this drama directed by Steven Spielberg, two-time Academy Award winner, Daniel Day-Lewis plays the larger-than-life 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. Focusing on his tumultuous last few months in office prior to his assassination, Lincoln examines of the horrific events of the Civil War, specifically the passage of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery and intimate view of his relationship with his family, especially the poor, tragic Mary Todd, touchingly and expertly portrayed by Sally Field. T hanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday. We set aside time to break
bread with others and share fellowship with family and friends—old and new. It’s a time where we can pause to reflect on the bounty of our harvest. Okay, so we’re not farmers, but there are still many other very real rewards we can celebrate. Some might be physical, some are spiritual. We find the daily fabric of our lives which connects us. That’s why we give thanks. This Thanksgiving the staff, volunteers and everybody who receives services at One n Ten are excited to share this very special time of year with their families—whether by birth or an extended one that they’ve created—with the rest of the community and those who support them.

Friends and family are number one!” One n Ten moved into their very own home this year on Third Street, near Osborn Road. Cavaliere expanded on the organization’s blessings. “Our very own home makes this Thanksgiving the most special, as well as inviting and welcoming the community, especially for our young people who don’t have a birth ‘home.’ They look out for each other, particularly during the holidays. I’m thankful to be part of it.” Micheal Weakley, Deputy Director for six years now added, “We have lots of blessings, especially our new housing

For many of our kids it’s the first time their parents are exposed to their kids’ lives here. This is the top time of year for those in need. It’s good to remember that they’re teenagers first.” The enthusiastic dynamo Kado Stewart, Camp Director and Program Coordinator told about the great things that happen for One n Ten.
“I’m so thankful for our volunteers, especially those who help out with camp. They go above and beyond. They always show up!” Executive Director Linda Elliott is excited about the newly established Q U Scholarship Fund independently founded and administered by several lions of the community who want to see that our GLBTQ youth have
finances available for post-high school education or career training. “It’s huge,” Elliott said. “So many youth simply don’t have the financial resources to go beyond high school. There’s about $20,000 in the account now. We’re so thankful for this new, vital program.” One n Ten serves the youth and young people Valleywide at their Phoenix location, Glendale, which opened a center about a year ago. In Mesa, a location opened this past March.

It wasn’t so great getting beat up by you as a child, but since you’ve reached thirty, I absolutely love being the youngest. And the prettiest. Thank you to my partner, who makes me look smarter. I never met anyone else whose dentist told him his wisdom tooth has the lowest IQ on record. I really wanted that red ten-speed bike, but how often do I still ride a bike? And I still
take those garbage cans out twice a week. Thank you for my ability to appreciate the things in life that aren’t expensive, like seeing someone fall up the stairs, slamming a dodgeball into someone’s head, and watching my friends fail. Thank you to the Universe for giving me the opportunity to meet my partner when a house fell on his sister. Thanks to the nuns at school for a couple of things: first, for slamming my knuckles with the ruler all those times. The arthritis is a real treat now. And second, for teaching me “cursive.” I thought I was going to learn new curse words. All I got was lousy penmanship. Thanks for not making porn “Smella-Vision.” I’m not a fan of the smell of poppers and feces. And who do I thank for Taylor Lautner? He is soooooo yummy! Thanks, again, to my Dad, for making me become an altar boy and exposing me to those priests. Or was it the other way around? W hat do you get when you give a lonely kid living in his grandparents’
basement in a conservative, small town in Tennessee (“We don’t have bathhouses. We have outhouses.”) a video camera and he discovers YouTube? Throw in some hair extensions, makeup, a mild obsession with a pop star and a few million loyal followers and you’ve got the shocking and amazing weblebrity Chris Crocker who’s weepy wail, “Leave Britney alone!” made him a household name in September, 2007. That famous—and slightly bizarre— video has been viewed over 35 million times. All of Crocker’s videos have accumulated over 270 million viewings. Beyond YouTube, Chris branched out into music. His song, “I Want Your Bite” reached #12 on iTunes Dance Chart in November 2011. Not content with 15 Minutes of Fame, Chris remains part of the pop cultural fabric. No longer the shocking, genderbending teen, at 25-years-old he’s grown into a handsome, opinionated, well-built young man who maintains a voluminous, racy, and very, very personal Tumblr blog. In fact, Chris shows the Full Monty (well, and a lot more) with his adult film debut in a scene on MaverickMen.com last month. And guess what? He’s a top. (Well, and bottom, too.) Chris chatted with ION Arizona.
Chris emerges a little bit timid, very open, honest, thoughtful, friendly and genuinely sweet. The kind of a guy you’d like to know. Really well. Forget Britney. We can’t leave Chris Crocker alone. ION: You’re one of the most viewed personalities on YouTube. How does that feel? CC: The truth is—and this is not a cop out—I really do it for my own gratification. I grew up in a really small town where I never felt like I had an outlet. For me it was a very therapeutic way to feel ‘listened to’ without that being my goal, really. ION: You’re such a part of early 21st century Pop Culture. Isn’t that exciting? CC: It is exciting! It comes with a lot of other people’s voices and opinions. The thing is—when you’re creating something for yourself or to get something off your chest or help you feel better, or whatever it’s for—when I started doing videos it was really to clear out my own voice in my own head and feel understood within myself. Then you have all these other people’s opinions and chatter that’s really hard to block out, sometimes. It can kind of help you to know your target audience when you see their reactions. ION: You describe yourself as an Internet Preacher. What do you preach about? CC: It’s funny, because that’s when I feel kinda like I’m really fulfilling my life’s purpose. I know it sounds really cheesy, but it’s true. Whenever I have a fire under my ass and I go off on these rants and these tangents, it’s very therapeutic and feels like I’m doing something right. Growing up around a bunch of people who are completely opposite from me contributes to that, too. I have a lot of Gay friends who grew up in really liberal areas and they forget that there’s so much work that needs to be done in smaller parts of the country. They say, ‘What are you talking about? You’re always preaching about acceptance.” Well, honey, you live in West Hollywood. You’re forgetting there’s all these other kids in the South and middle America. It’s great to remind people we are still repressed and there’s a lot more work that needs to be done in all areas of the United States and the world. ION: You were bullied, yet you’ve emerged as a young man very comfortable in your own skin. How do you endure criticism? CC: I always look at my own intentions.

When people get critical about me I just consider the source. I ask myself, ‘Do I really value that person’s opinion?’ A lot of time we just focus on words—not necessarily the source. It’s usually anonymous people so I don’t care what they think. The people closest to me know that I’m a good person and know who I am. It rounds everything out. ION: What scares Chris Crocker? CC: Typical things. I don’t let many people into my life; I’m very suspicious of people. I only have two or three real friends. One of my biggest fears is dying alone. I hate that anything I do my family has to take the heat for. Matters of the heart. I don’t want my family to deal with things that I choose to do. Nothing scares me other than that. ION: You said, “The only Gay Pride where I live is in my bedroom.” The world has really opened up for you. CC: It’s great that I’ve got to do things, but it’s sad to me that my hometown hasn’t really progressed that much. Sure, I can move and do my thing and be around great people, but kids in my hometown have to resort to hiding who they are until they’re 25 or 30 because of denial.

I tried to start a Gay/Straight Alliance when I was in the 8th Grade and people said that if we did the Ku Klux Klan would start stuff and the news reporters would rally. The rest of the world is in the 2000s and the South is still in the early 90s. Any time I travel and I come back here I feel like I’m going back in time. ION: What would you like people to know about Chris Crocker that might surprise them? CC: I’m such an open book and share so much of myself online, even up-to-date stuff (I’m going through a break-up). My audience knows more about me than I can even remember. I have a very up-to-date relationship with them, I guess. I spend a lot of my time with my family or my friends when I’m not making my videos or making music. I’m just a very low-key person. I think a lot of people feel misled because they’re expecting some sort of character or loud person. A lot of people think I’m this really funny, bubbly personality, but that’s really only when the camera’s on. In my everyday life I’m really flatline and mellow. Totally. People are very taken aback when they meet me. The videos really are my outlet, to take all that frustration to be that intense or whatever it is. In everyday life I’m really—I hate to use the word ‘boring’—but I’m very mellow, serious. ION: Do you collect anything? CC: I collect everything I loved as a kid. I recently got a Pretty Woman tattoo on my arm because that’s one of my favorite movies. In my room I have my Cat Woman and Batman Returns posters, my Barbie’s I had as a kid. I’m always trying to recollect things that I had as a kid. When I have my own house I want to have a room with all of my idols that I had growing up. ION: Do you still live with your grandparents? 88

CC: Here’s the thing, I’ve been traveling so much that I haven’t even been in one place for a really long time, but all of my stuff is here. I’ve been living in hotels non-stop. I’m moving to L.A. in a month. I’m moving in with one of my best friends, Danny Noriega from American Idol. We’re the Gay Lucy and Ethel! ION: So, how was your first foray into the world of pornography? CC: It was something I’ve wanted to explore. I’m a natural exhibitionist. It wasn’t that different from anything I do; I was just sharing the bedroom side of my life. I had a partner for two years. My boyfriend and I broke up five days before the porn came out. I’m supposed to be filming scenes for ChrisCrockerXXX.com but I’m getting my head back together. A break-up takes a lot out of you; I’m trying to get my head in the right place. We’ll see. I don’t know. It’s hard to go through a break-up and have that to film. ION: What about the bareback issue? CC: I can see why people are upset. I’m not going to give some ignorant answer. I understand the risk. I did this with a partner. I’ve been friends with the Maverick Men for three years. The decisions I make for myself I don’t advocate for others. Any decision I make is for myself only. It’s hard when you’re well-known and make decisions and then other people think it’s okay to do that. What I do is for myself only. When you’re in any kind of spotlight people want you to be an example. The only person I represent is myself. That’s the bottom line. People can like me, certain people can look up to me, but my message has always been to be true
to yourself. I’m not going to be stay true to who everyone thinks I should be. ION: How do you visualize Chris Crocker at 50? CC: Lord! I never say never, but I don’t think I’ll be doing YouTube videos at 50—if there even will be a YouTube then. I don’t like knowing what I’m gonna do. I think that would make things boring. Wherever my inspiration, heart or gut leads me. ION: If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? CC: I already know! My power would be to force the truth out of everybody. My biggest pet-peeve is giving people second chances, third chances, fourth chances and never knowing if they’re telling the truth. I would be able to look someone in the eye and force the truth out of them. That’s something I struggle with. Who would I be? I don’t know ... the Crockerizer? ION: How many times do people ask you to say those famous three words? CC: It’s far less than you would think. It was just such a ‘moment’ for me. Most people who meet me were fans of my videos before that video—I did videos for two years before. My first video had eight million hits, like “Hair Flip” and “Bitch, Please.” They ask me to say that more. “Hair Flip” is their favorite. t’s been such a whirlwind month! Hurricane Madonna blew in and everyone battened down the hatches to watch the old gal shimmy and shake. I must admit: nobody does Madonna quite like Madonna. Even I could tell that by watching her on the smallest Jumbotron ever from Row VVV, seat 5113. (See teeny tiny picture). And who could forget Madonna in Bloodhounds of Broadway? Well, okay. Maybe you did. A lot of people did. But seeing this little pup (see picture) at BS West on Halloween shows why it’s so important to adopt-a-pet and make a friend. He comes with papers and is trained. Woof! My devoted public begs for more, more, more! Besides Madonna. You asked for it ... and you got it! I’m proud to carry on the venerable, time honored ION Arizona Halloween tradition established just last year in this prize-winning column. All year long I’ve
been wondering and hoping, “I hope that g-g-g-gorgeous Joel Michael Anderson gets just as naked as he got last year!” Faithful readers, I’m proud to say that he did not disappoint! You could say Joel’s just “tutu” divine! (see picture). Love that Joel! He’s the ”top”—and that’s the “bottom” line! (It doesn’t get much better than this, folks!) I can’t wait ‘til next year!
