So Much Going On, It’s Scary!

I

t’s hard to believe that October is here already. We’re cooling down and getting ready for some exciting events. There are so many things happening in Arizona this month that we had to expand this issue to 132 pages!

What’s Old is New Again This month, you have to check out the new club called “the BAR on Central”. Formerly Amsterdam, this club has been transformed by the masterminds behind BLISS/Rebar. I think a lot of you out there can breathe a sigh of relief that this magical club in a central location has new owners as well as a new attitude. There’s so much more out there to explore. Check out the newcomers Stacy’s at Melrose, Zorfs and the new, remodeled Aqua nightclub (formerly Club Zarape).

Halloween Guide The place to be every Halloween is BS West. Every year they out do themselves and this year is no different. Actually, this year it is different. “Reincarnation” on October 26 promises more fun for everyone with DJs, dancing, a light show and a $1000 costume contest. Don’t forget all the other great parties throughout the Valley and Tucson. So many we had to create an entire guide of Halloween parties (Check it out on page 103.)

their new Executive Director, Justin Owen, Rainbows will be better than ever. Food Trucks, craft beer, two stages, tequila tasting, and a up and coming superstar headliner. Check out the sexy and talented Steve Grand whom we were lucky enough to interview on page 26.

Welcome Gay Bowlers Are you ready for some football? Once again, Phoenix was chosen to host the national Flag Football Gay Bowl XIII and ION is a proud media sponsor. Check out the complete guide to all the events in and around the Bowl events on page 20.

Wait! There’s More … There is so much happening this month, like Zorfs Pet Pride, Daniel Tosh coming to Comerica Theatre (page 60), Arizona State Fair starting October 11 (also National Coming Out Day), Tucson and Phoenix AIDS Walks as well as Tucson Pride. Don’t miss our features on the Imperial Court of Arizona and Scorpius Dance Theater’s “A Vampire Tale” at the Little Theatre at Phoenix Theater. Oh, my! Or you could sit home and play Grand Theft Auto 5. (Seriously, how cool is that game?) Get out, have fun, and call Über (use discount code IONAZ for $20 Off, EVEN if you’ve ridden before!) or Discount Cab to get you to all these great events.

Rainbows Festival Some call it “Pride Light.” I call it a fun filled weekend celebrating our pride. This year, thanks to the backing of Phoenix Pride and 12

D

ark, handsome, sloe-eyed singer/ songwriter Steve Grand premiered his music video “All American Boy” on YouTube this past July 2, and it went viral. It has over two million views now. The wistful ballad is close to a traditional, American folk/rock story—except it’s about one young man’s yearning for another. Music execs encouraged removing the gender specific pronouns. Grand wouldn’t compromise. His follow-up music video, the rollicking, fun-loving song “Stay” is what everything summer—and having a cute boyfriend— should be about.

Although filled with the exuberance that comes with youth, Grand is still thoughtful, smart, funny and enormously kind. He’s also very introspective. “People need to be brave for the world to change, for us to grow and move on. It’s time to be brave. The world does not change until it’s sees honesty,” he said in another interview. Steve Grand was honest with ION Arizona when he talked about his new popularity, childhood, his creativity, how he discovered music and his thoughts about faith.

I’m a gay man.

You’re I don’t think there’s any- ION: one of the few thing wrong with that. I people who Grand’s earlier can effectively music video don’t think I’m any less use the word performances ‘juxtaposition’ as a in the eyes of God for as the winsome song lyric. Steve [Starchild] that. Neither should are on YouTube. His any of you. Steve Grand: My English cover of Lady Gaga’s “You and I” is dynamic and very enthusiastic. (“I was saving it all up!” he told ION) for a boy who grew up shy and sheltered. Grand also plays guitar, piano and flute. Not comfortable being pigeonholed as “the gay country/ western singer,” Grand describes his sound as “rock and pop, deep fried in a little bit of country.” He just appeared as the toothsome “Clubhouse Bartender” eye candy with Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live on Bravo TV.

Music ministry in four Chicagoland Catholic churches made Grand a favorite among parishioners. When he resigned—openly gay and out—he received three standing ovations from the congregation. When his parish priest saw the video for “All American Boy” his only concern was about the drinking and smoking in the video. A real all-American boy, Steve Grand also received the rank of an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.

teacher would be so proud! (laughs) My mom said, “Gee, I had to look that word up. I didn’t even know what it meant!” ION: How are you dealing with this sudden popularity and recognition?

SG: I’ve always been a person who enjoys taking on a challenge. I always try to rise to the occasion. I’ve had my share of struggles. My life has changed drastically since July 2. I have a whole new set of responsibilities to people I’ve touched with my music. Everything I say, people want to twist around. That’s the dark side—but a very small part—of it. There’s good days and bad days. ION: You led a rather sheltered life as a child with no radio, TV, video games. How did that shape you? SG: My parents kept us away from a lot October 2013 www.IONAZ.com 27

of things. It sucked; it was difficult to connect with other kids. I wasn’t playing the same video games or watching the same TV shows. I wore hand-me-downs and didn’t have a lot going for me. But I was very creatively driven; my parents pushed me and that was a positive thing. They opened every creative outlet we imagined. When I was 4- or 5-yearsold I saw Charlie Brown and Schroeder around his little piano, my life completely changed. I’m an intense person today and I was back then. When I was interested in something it consumed me and became my life. I started making models of pianos all around the house, all different sizes—some bigger than me. My dad bought poster board and I would glue, tape and construct 3-dimensional models of pianos and draw the keys on. So they said, ‘Let’s get this kid a piano.’ ION: You are Catholic, active in your parish’s music ministry and still a young man of faith. SG: I’ve never talked about what I believe, personally. I try to keep that to myself. I’m a champion for whatever faith you are. I stood before my congregation when my video came out and told them, ‘As you know, I’m a gay man. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I don’t think I’m any less in the eyes of God for that. Neither should any of you.’ Just ten years ago I

was sitting in those pews and it would’ve changed my world if I’d seen an openly gay musician being embraced by his parish and his community. I want to emphasize that there’s a lot of people who feel like there voices aren’t heard in the gay community. They feel like they can’t be, both, Catholic and gay, have traditional values and be gay, have a family and kids. We’re at a point where we’re ready to broaden the idea of what it means to be gay to accurately reflect the truth, which is that we are incredibly diverse. Just as much diversity as is in the straight world, there is in the gay world. ION: What would you like people to know about you? (Hey, We’ve all seen the underwear pictures.) SG: It might surprise people to know that I didn’t have a ‘modeling career’ by any stretch of the imagination. I did a handful of photoshoots when I was 19—when those pictures were taken. I had the ability to express confidence, sexiness—whatever. We all have to grow up. I never saw a cent from any of those pictures. I am not a ‘model-turned-singer.’ That’s a very inaccurate description of me. I’ve been working on music very hard my whole life. Music has saved my life. It’s given me hope in times I felt like I had nothing else. I’m not ashamed of the pictures, but there’s a lot more going on inside than just that. Growing up in a conservative household, that was my probably parents’ greatest fear—showing my body to the whole world. It was sort of my Great Act of Rebellion. (laughs)

ION: What is the most important thing you’ve discovered about yourself? SG: What I really do value is a lasting and meaningful connection with people, as opposed to people loving you at a distance. I’ve been very lucky to strike a chord with people, and that’s the most important thing to me. Learning to honor that trust, that’s given me a sense of purpose and drives me every day. ION: Who would you like to work with? SG: I don’t know! I do everything myself. I’m threatened by the idea of working with someone else—I’ve tried. I spend a lot of time alone in the creative process; I isolate myself. I’ve never thought about that! I would love to sing a duet of ‘You and I’ with Lady Gaga! (See his cover as Steve [Starchild] on YouTube.) ION: What do you do with your time off? SG: Since July 2 I’ve never really had a day off. My mind never stops. I feel like I could be doing something to make my career move forward. If I’m not working on things I’m worrying about things and drive myself crazy. ION: Tell us a secret about Steve Grand. SG: Oh, jeez! (Pauses) Yesterday I bought so much chocolate ... and I ate it all by myself. I felt so much shame going through the checkout line. My cart had Coca-Cola, and chocolate. (laughs)

October 2013 www.IONAZ.com 29

ION: Do you have any vices? SG: Sure, I drink sometimes, like every 23-year-old. I have a little whiskey and Coke before I go onstage. That’s about it. I haven’t partied in a long time. Before the video I hadn’t had a drop in five months, I didn’t smoke a cigarette. I don’t drink as much as I drank in “All American Boy.” (laughs) ION: Last question: Will you marry me? SG: (Laughs) My question is ‘Will you be my All American Boy?’ ION: The answer is, “Yes.” Absolutely!

B

e part of the growing GrandFam for Steve Grand. “Stay” a while with “All American Boy” Steve when he headlines at Rainbows Festival on Sunday, October 20th at 1 p.m. on the Main Stage in the Lathe House at Phoenix Heritage Square, Monroe and 7th Streets. Steve Grand’s music is available now on iTunes. 30

The 39 Steps If you like murder, intrigue and a heavy dose of Hitchcock suspense (with lots of laughter) you’ll love this. An on-stage plane crash, missing fingers, handcuffs, spies and a whodunit are all rolled into one nail-biting show. Four actors play over 150 characters (and some inanimate objects) with Monty Python-esque flair. The action happens October 2-20 at Phoenix Theatre, 100 E. McDowell Rd. For tix visit PhoenixTheatre.com or call 602-254-2151

The Importance of Being Earnest If you’re not wild about Oscar Wilde, you lose your gay card. This farce sends up Victorian values and is still funny. Jack loves Gwendolyn. Algernon loves Cecily. Monroe St. For tix call 602-256-6995

A

Celebrating a Decade of Dance & Fright

42

www.IONAZ.com October 2013

T

he ‘Nutcracker’ of Halloween,” A Vampire Tale by Scorpius Dance Theatre, returns to Phoenix Theatre’s Little Theatre for its tenth anniversary season. Evolving annually to provide a fresh take on this local cult classic, fans make a ritual to attend A Vampire Tale every season to see what juicy developments founder and choreographer, Lisa Starry, has in store.

“Ever since I was a small child curled up watching the soap opera Dark Shadows I’ve been in love with vampires,” Starry remembers. “I wanted to create my own vampire story that I could share with people. Since my training and background is in dance, that’s how the live production of A Vampire Tale came to life.” In this gothic tale, a young woman is drawn to the dark side and finds herself lured into an assorted band of bloodsuckers. Frightened, yet fascinated by their shadowy showmanship and seductive transactions, the girl struggles to avoid becoming part of their underworld when she becomes infatuated with the king vampire. A Vampire Tale indulges audiences with all the trimmings: dark and sexy drama, quirky and comedic episodes and visually stunning aerial feats. This production will feature 28 dancers— the largest cast yet—plus a variety of guest artists. Additionally, A Vampire Tale will welcome several new faces in the dance corps this season. “This is my largest and most exciting production of A Vampire Tale yet. Since we’re celebrating a milestone this year, I wanted to pull out all the stops,” said Starry. “I love getting my fabulous, talented artists all dressed up in cool costumes and crazy makeup. The amazing combination of lights, October 2013 www.IONAZ.com 43

music, props and dancers transforms the theatre into a sexy vampire world.”

as if they are part of it. They love returning to see A Vampire Tale every season. Our regulars come back year-after-year so they can introduce new friends to the show, and they enjoy seeing what changes I’ve made, including the new dancers.”

The piece is performed in Phoenix Theatre’s Little Theatre, an intimate black box space. “The audience loves being up close to the show; it makes them feel

Audience members will bid farewell to David Starry, who will be retiring after this season. David has become a recognizable force in A Vampire Tale as the lead male role of Victor, the king vampire. “Retiring was a difficult decision for me to make. However, a dancer’s

body has an expiration date, and this is a good time to pass the torch on to another Scorpius dancer.” New musical scores will be incorporated into the piece by local composer, Kristofer Hill, who’s completely re-mastering the soundtrack for A Vampire Tale. Founded in 1999 by Lisa Starry, Scorpius Dance Theatre has become one of Arizona’s leading performing arts organizations, consistently awarded by the Phoenix New Times as the “Best Contemporary Dance Company.” Scorpius engages audiences with its unique, entertaining

style of performance art that combines dance, theatre, and aerial movement with theatrics, music and pop culture themes. They are recognized internationally for its annual production of A Vampire Tale. “A Vampire Tale is finally getting national and international attention,” Starry reports. The piece was performed by the company in England. “My hope is for A Vampire Tale to be shared on stages all over the world and one day on the big screen with a film based on the story.”

Arizona’s

Imperial Court

Fundraising and Arizona’s Royal Family

O

nce upon a time in the mid-1970’s, the Valley was the kingdom of the Imperial Court de Phoenix. It gave aid and supported the gay community by hosting social events and benefits. It only lasted a few years and then, like the Phoenix bird, went up—or down—in flames. The empire endured some not-so-royal scandal, court intrigue (politics, that is), dangerous liaisons, a member ran off with funds and one blueblood up and died during the Emperor’s Ball. Then the dish ran away with the spoon. The Court never recovered. The Valley of the Sun went without a Court for 30 years. In 2005, past Court members met. An idea formed and the idea became a reality. They recruited others, found support in the community and laid the foundations for a successful new Court. The Imperial Sovereign Empire of Arizona was reborn.

“I was part of the Imperial Court of Nebraska. I love the Court system for all the wonderful people you meet from the U.S., Canada and Mexico. We are unique, but work with the same mission: for our communities.” Michael Gaffney, Emperor II “I became part of the Court system 22 years ago as the first elected Empress of the Imperial Court of Minnesota. After moving to Arizona I became involved to support our community and participate in fundraising to provide for organizations that need support. The international Court system is 68 courts strong. I believe we can do the impossible!” Dame Julie Craig, Empress II “I’m part of a family of people who believe that you cannot expect this community to give unless you are willing to give back.” Lady Christian, Empress VI

Unity, selflessness, and a need to help others is what motivates our Court. Members of the Court VIII say it best:

“Helping others makes me feel good inside.” Steve Marino, Prince VIII

“The court combines my need to help the gay and lesbian community and I enjoy spending time with the other Court members; they’re like family to me.” Vanilla de Lishus, reigning Empress VIII

“I joined looking to meet new people and found myself able to help such an enormous range of people. Effecting change has now become the most important thing in my life.” Harley Quinn, Countess VIII

“I joined the court to give back to the community and help those who are not as fortunate.” Tom Bledsoe, reigning Emperor VIII

for-profit organization striving to unite the gay, lesbian, transgender, bi-sexual and heterosexual communities through charitable fundraising events. Along with their high profile appearances and visibility at events and pageants, the Court raises funds for the Metropolitan Community Church, women’s charities, 1 Voice Community Center, Logan’s Playground, the Phoenix Metropolitan

Men’s Chorus, Hospice of the Valley, Foundation for Blind Children, AIDS Walk, Aunt Rita’s, Wingspan, the Bryon Wiley Memorial Scholarship Fund and other nonprofit charities. The Closet Ball benefits the Imperial Court burial fund and scholarship fund. The Investiture, Empress Ball, Emperor Ball, PR Ball and Coronation IX May 1-4, 2014 is a State event for the Court. The court raised nearly $4,500 this year.

Yo, DJ! What’s New? Katy Perry

Prism After the success of Teenage Dream and an album that boasted five number one hits, Katy squashes doubts of pressure by delivering a knockout. Packaged as a regular and deluxe edition, Prism continues the pop sensation of Dream and adds a level of maturity. Thankfully, Perry doesn’t go too EDM and instead gives fans a playful album full of hooks. Lead single “Roar” is bubbly and becomes her eighth #1 (landing her in the number five spot as a female artist with most number one hits of all-time). Other tracks of note include the CeCe “Finally” Peniston-esque “Walking on Air” as does the other dance tracks of “This is How We Do,” “Love Me” and “International Smile.” Then there’s the amazing “Unconditionally” — a gem of a song that will make you go, “ahhhhh.” GRADE: B+

Elton John

The Diving Board Sir Elton John is one of the most decorated artists in history. Not only has he been awarded 56 “Top 40” songs, but boasts the most successful single of all time—”Candle in the Wind.” Now the veteran is hoping to keep fans enthralled by focusing on the music and the piano. While this will not gain new fans, this stripped and raw album will comfort his base. First single “Home Again” is sullen, yet unmistakably Elton. The standouts prove to be “Oscar Wilde Gets Out” and “The Ballad of Blind Tom”— both with haunting riffs and an almost folk October 2013

music-like appeal. There are moments where the record leans toward an early Tori Amos, but it never quite crosses over to the bold. GRADE: B-

Icona Pop This is...

What do you get when you mix Katy Perry, EDM, some dubstep, Ke$ha and Ace of Base on acid? Icona Pop’s debut record is the answer. They wowed us with “I Love It” and then kept us going with “In the Stars.” Now “All Nite” shows them doing more of the same. Though they did right by testing the waters with an EP, this album leaves you wanting more and something bold. Instead, they present music that is pop puppetry. The biggest miss here is the cover of the 1963 hit “My Party.” They just took the single to the bizarre. However, you’ll find some solace with “In the Stars.” GRADE: C

Look for other new music from: Alter Bridge, Korn, Miley Cyrus, Paul McCartney, Pearl Jam, Gavin DeGraw, Kelly Clarkson (holiday), Donna Summer and Boards of Canada. In other music news, Boy George (pictured) is set to release his first album in 18 years this fall. Most known as the vocalist for Culture Club, George has had a tumultuous career; but has one of the most angelic male voices in the biz (though it’s a bit raspier these days). If lead single “King of Everything” is an indication of his new material, sign me up! www.IONAZ.com 57

Kill Your Darlings Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Jack Huston, Ben Foster, Michael C. Hall On August 13, 1944, Beat Generation poet and writer Lucien Carr stabbed to death his longtime admirer David Kammerer when—as Carr claimed—Kammerer assaulted him after Carr rejected yet another sexual advance. Kammerer was introduced to Carr when the latter was 15-years-old and had maintained an obsessive infatuation with him for five years before the murder. The event devastated his friends while at the same time served as the inspiration for creative works by Jack Kerouac (author of On The Road) and Allen Ginsberg (poet of Howl). Directed and co-written by John Krokidas, Kill Your Darlings stars Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Dane DeHaan (The Place Beyond the Pines) as Kammerer and Carr in this biographical drama about the murder, as well as Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter franchise) as Ginsberg, Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) as Kerouac and Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma) as William S. Burroughs. Release Date: October 16

Carrie Starring: Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore

horror writer Stephen King, Carrie is the tale of Carrie White, a shy, high school girl who uses her telekinetic powers to exact revenge on the classmates who terrorize her. A classic underdog tale with a supernatural twist, the novel was adapted into a cult classic film in 1976 starring Sissy Spacek (Coal Miner’s Daughter) as Carrie. Even if you’ve never seen the film, you’re no doubt familiar with the infamous scene when a bucket of pig’s blood is dumped on Carrie at her prom, as referenced by artists, writers and Raja, a winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race. I’m not one to advocate remaking that which is already great to begin with, but I’m eager to see the new version which stars Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass 2) as Carrie with Julianne Moore (The Kids Are Alright) playing her detestable mother. Just in time for Halloween, this is sure to be a scream! Release Date: October 18

Diana Starring: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews, Cas Anvar, Laurence Belcher Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Der Untergang), Diana stars Naomi Watts (The Impossible) stars as the iconic Princess in the last two years of her life. The drama focuses on her relationships with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Andrews, The English Patient) and her romance with Dodi Fayed (Anvar). It’s been speculated that Diana’s liaison with Fayed was largely intended to make Khan jealous, as their relationship had just ended due to his reluctance to invite media into his life by marrying her. No doubt, Diana will attempt to shed light on the intimate details of this affair while also providing another opportunity for the skillful Watts to showcase her talent. Release Date: November 1

The East (2013) Starring: Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page, Toby Kebbell Co-written and starring Brit Marling (Another Earth), The East is a thriller directed by Zal Batmanglij (Sound of My Voice) about an intelligence agent who, after infiltrating an Eco-Terrorist organization, finds herself in an ethical quandary. Sarah Moss (Marling) is a former FBI agent-turned-contractor for a private intelligence firm. She’s hired to go undercover and uncover the identities of the members of The East, an aggressive activist group targeting the heads of Corporations for engaging in practices that put the environment and its inhabitants in harm’s way. As she gets to know their members, including Benji (Skarsgard, True Blood), Doc (Kebbell, War Horse), and Izzy (Page, Inception), and understand their motives, she faces a dilemma: is she’s really working for the right side? A thoughtful, well-written narrative about our individual contribution to either helping or harming our world, The East is well-worth a watch … and a think. Available on BluRay and DVD

Halloween is upon

us and to get you in the spirit why not get enchanted by the spells of “American Horror Story: Coven”? Producer Ryan Murphy brings us a third season with familiar faces. 300 years have passed since the Salem Witch Trials and young witches are flying to a special school in New Orleans; think Hogwarts with a Mardi Gras. Jessica Lange is Fiona, the Supreme Witch. She has a daughter, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson). Kathy Bates joins the cast as Delphine LaLaurie, who leads a doublelife: she’s a socialite who secretly tortures and murders her slaves. It’s good to see Kathy back to her sick, twisted Misery days. Angela Bassett stars as voodoo priestess Marie Laveau. Not much has been revealed about the series except that one of the students brings along a very dark secret. We can all look forward to seeing Jessica Lange going up against Kathy Bates, but does that mean Delphine is the Big Bad Witch? The thing about AHS is that not even the promos make sense until the finale when you can put them all together and even then you’re still confused, but Ryan Murphy sure knows how to tell a story. A horror story, especially. “Pretty Little Liars” brings us their annual Halloween episode on ABC Family on October 22. “Friend’s share secrets. That’s what keeps us close.”

Devious Dames Set in Rosewood we meet four girls who have been tormented and harassed after the death of their friend Alison. Aria (Lucy Hale) returns from Iceland and meets Ezra (Ian Harding) at a bar. He turns out to be her high school English teacher. Awkward. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) is the brains and overachiever of the group but when she went crazy, she went full-on batshit crazy. Then there’s Hefty Hanna (Ashley Benson) who couldn’t find her way out of a Five Guys Burger bag but she provides the emotions for the group. Lastly, there is the lesbian, Emily (Shay Mitchell), who lost her first gay love and then started dating her teammate who tried to drown her. I know, right? Someone named “A” keeps sending the girls messages exposing their secrets via text and creepy dolls. There’s plenty of eye candy in Rosewood but it seems that all the men have a complex for high school girls. To Catch a Predator could film in this town for life. The show is definitely a teen drama with the fact that everyone loses their minds whenever their text message alert goes off, have they ever heard of “vibrate?” Four seasons and we don’t even know if Ali is really dead and does no one find it suspicious that these four girls are constantly getting attacked? There are plenty of eye-rolling moments but the last few scenes of every episode make you “gay gasp.” October 2013 www.IONAZ.com 75

The Vig W

hen Phoenix was just a one-horse town around the turn of the last century, city planners designed Roosevelt Street to be a grand, chic boulevard, destined to be the “silk stocking district” for the city’s upper crust. Planning changed and Roosevelt Street never rivaled New York’s Park Avenue nor Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. Eventually expanding city limits and urban flight left the swank Roosevelt neighborhood a more than a little down-at-the-heels and those aged silk stockings with runs.

Fillmore

Uptown at 16th Street near Bethany Home Road. In September The Vig Fillmore remodeled the old Cavness home, fired up their ovens and set the table. News of their opening spread like wildfire. This location houses the official “Test Kitchen” for every Vig. Recipes are created by their youthful, enthusiastic Executive Chef Jorge Gomez (pictured top). Nothing leaves la cucina ‘til he says, “¡Muy bueno!” He’s honed his skills for 15 years, studying at the culinary institute of Puebla, Mexico and in Spain and other local eateries. Okay, now what about the menu? For starters, the Sonoran Ceviche ($9) is a refreshing combination of pico de gallo, jalapeño and avocado with

Now, a renaissance in the district attracts avant garde artists, quirky shops and boutiques and intimate cafés, giving the ‘hood a muchneeded transfusion. In the west end of the ‘hood, an early pioneer in the 1914 home known as the Cavness House was Palatte. In 2009 Local Breeze took over, only to blow over. succulent, tender pieces of whitefish marinated in fresh lime juice. It comes with thick, tasty corn chips. Their Daily Flatbread ($10) usually calls The Vig “home” for a week, since they’re always a hit with regulars who hate to see them leave after only a day. Our naan bread was topped with tender chunks of grilled eggplant, tomato garlic sauce, carmelized onion, roasted cherry tomatoes, white cheddar cheese, parmesan and basil. Think “speciality pizza.” Carnivorous? Don’t miss out on Chef Gomez’ personal favorite, The Prime Vig Dip ($14), where Chef carves up mediumrare sliced beef, smoked gouda, grilled onions, chipotle mayo on a pretzel bun with a ramekin of stout, rich, hearty au jus. Miss Manhattan? You won’t after you have their NYC Reuben ($11). You’ll lick your chops for their Guinness braised corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and housemade Russian dressing on rye bread. The meat is hand-carved for each sandwich order so that it’s tender and juicy—never dry.. Five more sandwiches round out the selection, including a Black Bean Burger for closet carnivores who are vegetarians. Sandwiches come with a choice of side—don’t miss out on the onion rings with a zippy batter. Five creative salads, like the Southwesterner with Achiote Chicken ($13) and the Lean & Green Steak Salad are available, each one has its own flair you need to check out for yourself. 80

www.IONAZ.com October 2013

Don’t miss out on Chef’s own specialties, like a variety of gourmet and street tacos or the fab Posole ($8) that’s a “must,” especially with cooler weather. Looks like local restaurants are gonna be battling it out for “Best Bread Pudding.” The Vig brings out an enormous serving (about the size of a brick. We’re not kidding.) Their dessert includes bananas, walnuts, custard, a luscious butter-rum sauce and a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. More than enough to share—if you feel generous. Look for a Sunday Brunch coming this month. The Roosevelt District may have been the stomping ground for the hoitytoity of the past, but nowadays at The Vig they just serve great food. Not attitude. OUTRAGEOUS! OUTRAGEOUS! Unfair and unbalanced. We decide.

ANY RESEMBLANCE TO THE TRUTH IS TRAGICALLY ACCIDENTAL

Boycotts Starve Gays; Good News: Bitches OUTRAGEOUS! are Skinny, Girl!

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Human Rights Campaign headquarters report that massive boycotts by the LGBTQ community has left gays starving, but politically correct. On the bright side, those “skinny jeans” are lookin’ fine, bitches.

Boycotting Russian vodka to protest of Russia’s hosting the next winter Olympics pared off more gay American blubber. Just over one jigger of packs 96 calories. Gay mouths haven’t touched a Chik-fil-A sandwich for nearly a year in retaliation to their funding anti-gay marriage initiatives nationwide. One deluxe sandwich weighing 7.3 ounces packs a whopping 420 calories.

Gay boycotts started back in 1973 when the Coors Brewing Company was accused of refusing to hire gay people and bars quickly removed their products. The Now, the anti-gay “hate” brewery caved. O

nce upon a time, there was a little boy. Well, actually he was a fully grown man. But for the sake of the story ... Anyway, when little Cullen Daniel (pictured top)—dance instructor and DJ—went into the deep, dark woods on his way to grandmother’s house. Okay, he was just out for a hike. But when little Cullen got lost in that forest—without any Verizon 4G coverage and mountain lions growling in the distance (that part is completely true)—for 27 hours and he ran out of Gummi Bears, Red Vines and smokes, believe-you-me, he started to panic! How would he find his way home? Who would teach Mrs. Feingold the Fox Trot tomorrow? Who would play that horrible new Cher song that I hate so much at Stacy’s? Who, I ask you?

Do you know what saved his life, boys and girls? Do you? I’ll tell you. A needle and thread, one matchstick, a tube of lip gloss, the September issue of Vogue and the belief that he was meant to live. Frankly, I’m not sure what kept him from having a nervous breakdown, but we’re awfully glad he made it out in one adorable piece. Now you know why it was named “Dead Dance Teacher Canyon,” you darling little goofball!

The lesson is: always bring a bag of Pepperidge Farms Bread Crumbs to sprinkle on the trail so you can find your way back, a compass, sunscreen, a clean pair of underwear and a revolver. At press time, everybody here at ION Arizona magazine is worried about the government shut down, the gutting of the Affordable Health Care Act by the Republicans, and how awful Miley Cyrus is. But nothing concerns us more than the knowledge that July 2012 ION Cover Guy Trevor Grant (pictured center right) is now 21-years-old. Yes, the genie’s out of the bottle at last! Everybody’s favorite Facebook Poster Boy is out of his cage! Release the Kraken! Trevor and his d-d-d-dreamy boyfriend Tylor Caruso (pictured center left) enjoyed many alcoholic adult beverages at BS West to celebrate. Ah, sweet bird of Youth! (That’s a reference to a famous play by Tennessee Williams, my little homos. Trevor isn’t a bird, silly goose!) Equality Arizona presented their fab awards dinner at the fancy Arizona Biltmore where I noticed that handsome Dustin Marshall getting manhandled by Hollywood funnyman Bruce Vilanch (pictured below). I’m a lot like Bruce; when I’m around Dustin I feel like manhandling him, too. Rawr! By the time you read this, let’s hope that the government is up ‘n’ running again and that Miley Cyrus is lost in a deep, dark, scary canyon without any breadcrumbs. October 2013 www.IONAZ.com 127

The Draconids Meteor Shower October

6-10 does not involve vampires although someone seems to be sucking out your life force. Places and things to avoid: Texas, chainsaws and massacres. And Republicans.

Aries Mar. 21 - Apr. 20

“It’s close to midnight and somethin’ evil’s lurking in the dark.” It might be your ex-, but it could be your mother. It’s bound to be a “Thriller,” for sure. Work is a Fright Factory mid-month, but don’t be afraid.

Taurus Apr. 21 - May 20

The Full Moon on the 19th has you growing more hair than usual—and not just on the palms of your hands. Your inner werewolf emerges and you’ll do some late night howling when someone excites you. Arf! Arf! Good doggie!

Gemini May 21 - June 21

The call is coming from inside the house! You’re getting calls on your iPhone, Android, Galaxy or even an old flip-phone that scare you. Relax. You’ll wake up and realize it’s only a bad dream. Everything’s fine. Or is it ...?

Cancer June 22 - July 22

“Double, double, toil and trouble ...” A witch is cooking up a curse. It might be a “frenemy,” a neighbor, but it’s probably that bitch at work who has it out for you. She’ll melt with a bucket water. Take the broomstick with you.

Leo July 23 - Aug. 22

Paranormal activity is freaking you out. Hold on. There are no poltergeists. Somebody moved your America Crew hair pomade and now you’re paranoid. Check under the bed for boogeymen, however. They’re totally real.

Virgo Aug. 23 - Sep. 22

Frankenstein. Dracula. The Mummy. Perez Hilton. Scary monsters. You feel like life is one giant creature feature. You’ll outsmart and outrun the ghouls and win. Well, Perez Hilton is pretty hard to kill. Unforch.

Libra Sep. 23 - Oct. 22

Your rare and unusual talent attracts an admirer. Your true love? Or an obsessive Phantom of the Opera-type stalker? Because that cat is freaky. Your birthday brings a lucrative opportunity your way. But if it’s a babysitting job on Elm Street, say, “No.”

Scorpio Oct. 23 - Nov.23

Choices, choices. This Halloween you might be a pirate. Or an astronaut. Or a goblin. Consider going as a Fairy Princess, a ballerina, or Britney Spears. But not Gaga. This birthday means not limiting yourself to the predictable. Expand your horizons!

Sagittarius Nov. 23 - Dec. 23

A home situation has you feeling like you’re living in a spooky house with the Munsters— except not nearly as funny. Remember, you’re the normal one, just like their cousin Marilyn. Late in the month your perspective changes. Weird families are normal.

Capricorn Dec. 23 - Jan. 20

You might want to carry some garlic, wolfbane and a silver bullet for your pistol. Be wary of a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde type at work or socially. You will emerge as the hero in a sensitive situation when you slay a monster.

Aquarius Jan. 21 - Feb. 19

Wedding bells are ringing! Is this bliss? Or are you doomed to be ... The Bride of Frankenstein? Examine your sweetheart for stitches, scars, and two bolts in his neck. See? Just as I thought. You’ll find a special zipperhead this fall.

Pisces Feb. 20 - Mar. 20

Hey, little Nemo! You’ll be facing a humongous Sharktopus. With sharp, pointy teeth. Don’t worry. This one’s just as stupid as the one in the movie and totally fake. Most things that scare you this month are totally fake. But wait ‘til next month.
