ow, when you’re dancing, remember, make it broader, with tons of shoulder. Remember, you’re a drag queen!” Go to any drag show these days and look – just beyond the spotlight, off to one side, caught in the reflection of the sequins, paillettes, in the midst of the razzle-dazzle – and you’re likely to see a familiar face, smiling and lending a helping hand, and engineering the show. The ubiquitous “Man Behind the Curtain” is Edward Castro, wig wrangler, fan and friend to queens as well as the impresario and creator of ArizonaDrag. com, the “#1 Source for Drag in Arizona.” A Tucson transplant, Castro was a DJ and a pageant promoter for the Miss Gay US of A system in the Old Pueblo before he moved to Phoenix in 2008 and promoting two pageants and creating ArizonaDrag. com to inform the community about drag shows, events, drag events, help budding drag queens, and fundraisers for the community. “It just started out as a hobby, but after the response, it blossomed into something bigger,” Castro explained. “I enjoy putting together drag events and since drag is so welcomed by the Phoenix community, I felt that they can use this as a resource to learn about the queens. ArizonaDrag.com informs people where shows are, or how to get into drag. The community has responded so well and it’s allowed everyone a chance to see and do more.” Castro reflected about working with Arizona’s queens and his experiences. “My favorite part is learning about the queens and how they got their start. Some of their stories are definitely inspirational; some weren’t successful right off the bat. It took them three or four years before they got their big break. I like getting to know the person
behind the make-up. Their drag character is what people see on-stage; but the person behind the make-up can be someone completely different.” ArizonaDrag.com and Castro are quick to remember the GLBT community who support the resource and the performers. Arizona’s queens are ready to help, too. “When push comes to shove, the Arizona’s queens can put their differences aside to raise money for the community. They’re definitely unified and are there when you need them, ” Castro pointed out. Castro is planning fundraisers benefiting the Phoenix Pride scholarship fund, a drag calendar for the 2011 year featuring some of the top talent headlining drag shows in Phoenix and Tucson. He’s also coordinating a competition called “Arizona’s Rising Star.” “This event will help a new, upcoming queen start her career,” Castro elaborated. Look for one of a kind shows featuring nationally known names from the world of drag from around the country. “We’re also planning a great show in April before Phoenix Pride with some hot, national talent that’ll be really exciting!” 2011 also promises RuPaul’s Drag Race viewing parties, featuring past and present cast members and shows with prizes. Last year ArizonaDrag.com distributed concert tickets to Mariah Carey’s concert, the Renaissance Festival and a cash prize of $300 for Lip Synch for your Life contest. What’s in the cards for the future of drag in Arizona? “Drag in 3-D,” laughed Castro. “Really, though, the newcomers, such as Coco St. James, Kira Daniels, Victoria Bacon each bring a different, unique style of drag that really is the future of drag here.” October 2010

History of Modern All I can say is that I have been waiting 17 years for this album. Packed with 14 new tracks, OMD have never sounded better, more current and nostalgic all in one presentation. Lead single “If You Want it” is choral, happy and sleek while “History of Modern pt II”, continues the joyride of Andy’s radio loving vocals. And then there are the extremely electrified and charged tracks of “History of Modern pt I” and “Sister Marie Says,” that make this album a must have. And for us US peeps, look for a special track called “Save Me” featuring Aretha Franklin to close the album. Simply divine, simply satisfying, simply amazing.

On KT’s third album she decides to change it up to showcase a rockier, grittier side that almost says, I’ve gone punkish on you.” Well, at least as punkish as a singer songwriter can get. Lead US single “Fade like a Shadow” proves to be most commercial with its glockenspiel chipper tone, while UK single “Still a Weirdo” gives the listener one of the softer sides of this disc. Other tracks of note include the mid-tempo “Difficulty” and the sultry Peggy Lee “Fever” like song of “Golden Frames.” It’s not as catchy as her previous work, nor does it resonate with commercialism, but I give her credit for trying something different.

After the dismal sales performance of System (which cannot be attributed to its quality), Seal does away with his brief stint into dance and goes back to the sound that made him a worldwide phenomenon, as heard in the nearly perfect album of 2004. Lead single “Secret” proves to be a perfect introduction to this album of soulfulness. It’s sweet caress and melodic harmony is simply sweeping. Commitment also goes deeper than any previous work and is most evident on “Weight of My Mistakes,” “Best of Me” and “If I’m any Closer.” In all, these 11 tracks
Adam and company’s third effort comes with high expectations and after careful listen, it’s comforting to know Maroon 5 keeps to their formula to present an album that will keep your appetite wet for months to come. Though lead single “Misery” falls a bit short of a catch-me single, they make up for it in “Give a Little More” and “Get Back in my Life,” in which both have an irresistible jam and a pulsating beat to boot. Then there’s the soaring and harmonious balled, “Just a Feeling,” one of this albums high points. Hands also gets great support from the groovy “Runaway” and the mid-tempo “How.” It’s so great hearing this band make great music. October 2010

T
he runaway hit Project Runway, gives budding fashion designers a forum to hit The Big Time. This season Lifetime TV offers up the endearing and fascinating reality show On The Road with Austin and Santino. PR alumni and pals, the fey and fabulous popinjay Austin Scarlett and the savvy, sexy enfant terrible Santino Rice team up and “pay it forward.” They’re taking their act on the road, blowing into 14 towns, hamlets and villages across America, giving deserving women a makeover including a custom made piece of couture for a special occasion. The resulting shows are touching, unique and rollicking good fun. Austin and Santino spoke with ION Arizona about their whirlwind tour of America, their friendship and fashion. You can almost hear PR patriarch Tim Gunn in the background saying, “Make it work.” And, boy, does it! ION: Your show is great! It showcases your humanity – something we don’t always see on TV. Santino Rice: Thanks. You’re just seeing a different facet of who I am. I’ve always been the same person. People have just got to see bits and pieces of me on other shows. I’m glad that people get to see this side of me; it’s a big part of who I am. It was very much glossed over on Project Runway for brevity. I feel for people who don’t have survival skills, or the ability to make things happen quickly. That’s part of the ultimate test of a Higher Energy or God saying, “Can you get through this? Are you really worthy of continuing?” If you make those sacrifices and persevere, you’re gonna win. Whatever it is that you do. If you don’t quit, you’ll ultimately succeed. If you quit, you won’t. You’re out of the game. You’re done. But if you keep persevering, you keep going, you’ll succeed. That’s the bottom line. Austin Scarlett: Thank you. That’s one of my favorite parts about it. It’s wonderful that we get to share – and create – happiness for someone who deserves it. We are both so really happy; we weren’t selected, we developed it ourselves. We really wanted to
do something that involved people. ION: What was it like working with Austin/ Santino? SR: Oh, Austin’s great! We’ve known each other for the past five years.. He’s a great guy. Super funny! I love doing the show with him. I think people like to point out our differences more than our similarities. We’re very similar in different ways. We laugh about the same things. He’s got a wellspring of references. We can make comments or say a line from an old movie and just be rolling and cracking up. Other people watching us may not get it, but I hope they do. There’s some coded messages and humor going on. AS: He’s so much fun, first of all. It’s a madcap adventure when Mr. Rice is involved. He’s very creative. I think we push each other’s limits, creatively. We both put a lot of heart and soul into our designs. We both, of course, have different approaches to different ideas. It’s great when you combine them in a way that works. And luckily, with Santino, it works. ION: What is the most challenging? Any near-disasters? AS: Luckily we were able to keep our calm, but there were a few close calls. There were all these technical aspects of creating the dress. We didn’t have the normal working conditions we would have back in our studios. The hardest part was traveling; packing and unpacking constantly. Every week. We filmed one week per episode. We arrive into town and set up. Then we film for two days, and have one day off. It’s a pretty tough schedule. But we get to see these really incredible places we’d never get to see otherwise. ION: What is the most gratifying element of the show for you? SR: Anytime you can dress a client and make them feel beautiful and create something for them that they’ve never had October 2010

before in their lives and know that this is probably going to be the best garment they’ve ever had and ever worn, that fits them to a “T” is amazing. It is overwhelming; it is emotional. That’s part of it. If tears start flowing it’s from a place of love and happiness. It’s a beautiful thing. You discover certain things and experiences in life. Until you experience something like this you don’t really know what the overall effect will be for the client. When the client sees the finished garment ... you can’t help but be moved by their reaction and emotion. AS: The people, really. Getting to share the joy of fashion and beauty with different people. I love expressing myself through the clothes I design. Being able to share the beauty of that. The enjoyment I think everybody deserves to have with fashion. Just a little bit! ION: Which challenge or who touched you most? SR: Each experience is it’s own thing altogether. It’s awesome to have fourteen well, actually sixteen (laughs) - women all together. Ever single experience has been different. All these different personalities. Everyone’s been really great. There is an episode that’s even more emotional. There’s a lot of happiness in it – but there was definitely a lot of sadness in it for me. AS: The episode when we were in Virginia City, Nevada, with Justine Holbrook, the lady truckdriver, was really incredible. It was a 42

complete, new, sound, realization of her own beauty. All her life she’d been overweight and lost it all. She looked incredible, but in her mind she never saw herself as a beautiful woman in her life. That experience really opened her eyes. But each of them have been fantastic. ION: You were in some very small towns. How did the townpeople respond to you? SR: It’s really interesting. Growing up in a small town, I heard everything. We go into these small towns, and we didn’t have one negative comment actually said to our face. I can say we definitely had more positive experiences than negative. But in person, everyone was amazingly hospitable. Really genuine. We didn’t have any bad experiences or close calls. Looking at it from both sides, I do think people have evolved quite a bit. We still have a long way to go, but a lot of people are changing the way “Big City People” or Gay people are perceived. Whatever. It’s changing. I’m happy that if people can meet Austin and me, and get an idea who we are, we’re creating a better dialog between all people. AS: Having a camera crew with us definitely helped. Everyone was wonderful. Everyone was super hospitable, welcoming. I don’t know if it’s because we’re part of a TV show, but people were genuinely interested in everything we were doing. Sort of giving back to the community, in a way. We love it! Some people were in a state of shock, the whole craziness of having a whole film crew take over their lives. The crew comes into your house for days. It’s a lot to deal with for a normal person.
ION: Like the Wedding Dress episode where you go lingerie shopping with the bride’s fiancé and you offered to make him a “banana hammock”? AS: Yes! He was a cutie pie! (Laughs) I said I was joking – but I wasn’t really! They were so sweet together! But we spent so much time on the dress I didn’t get a chance to make him the banana hammock and I really wanted to make him something. I’ll have to come back for their anniversary. ION: You’ve rubbed elbows with the supermodel Heidi Klum, participated in Fashion Week, hobnobbed with Project Runway’s fashion oracle Tim Gunn and worked with celebrities. Was it different working with “the ordinary woman”? SR: No, not at all. I see people as the same. You kind of know what you’re getting into when you dress a celebrity or a big name, but most of my clients in real life are “real women.” They have huge responsibilities, but they’re not famous. I’m really just trying to get to know the essence of a person; find out what they like, what they dislike and help them create something that is ultimately the most beautiful garment they’ve ever owned in their life. That’s my POV when I enter one of these towns and meet a new client. I think when people first heard about they show they thought, “Uh-oh. Great. these Big City Designers are gonna come in and make fun of people in small towns.” That was never our intention. It was about bringing fashion somewhere that you rarely ever see it. You hardly ever see people making their own clothes anymore. There’s not a lot of stores caring dressmaking fabrics anymore to make a simple shirt. It’s all quilting fabric. Quilting is huge! Quilting is
keeping the art of sewing alive in America. A quilt is time consuming, labor intensive, it’s everything that a couture gown is. And a gown also has to be worn, has to be put on. It has to fit perfectly. There’s a lot of similarities between quilts and what Austin and I are creating. It’s based on Fashion as Art. We’re not just making “merchandise” or some kind of covering for the body. It’s specific. It’s purposeful. It’s as high art as we can imagine in that town with the material that we can find. It’s a definitely a challenge. But it’s those kinds of challenges that get me out of bed in the morning. Anaïs Nin said “Abnormal pleasures kill the taste of normal ones.” It can be a bad thing, too, if you do something that’s unhealthy for you. But when you’ve had these amazing experiences when you’ve been all over the world and kind of “done it all,” these challenges are really what excite you again. They definitely inspire me and Austin in whole new ways that help us be even more creative and add to our perspective on how we filter these experiences of life through our work. As frustrating as it can be at times it’s all been rewarding and ultimately inspirational.

AS: Certainly different, of course, being out of the regular New York studio scene where I’d be designing. But, yes, for them it’s a completely new experience that they’ve never really had before. So it’s really special in that way. It was more exciting for me! Letting them be part of something that they could never imagine, or have the opportunity for. Something that’s really special and wonderful. ION: If you could dress just one person in history, who would it be? SR: Just one person? Then I’m gonna say Catherine Deneuve.
AS: Tough one! There are so many! My goodness! How about ... Sarah Bernhardt. That would’ve been fun. Such theatrical style! You could costume her in all the great roles! They can make a dimpled smile out of a frown. They can even dye your eyes to match your gown! merica’s television audiences met Jujubee and became acquainted with her beguiling charms when she burst on the scene with LOGOs RuPaul’s Drag Race, season two. She placed in the top three, stealing everybody’s heart with her wit, kindness and amazing talent. Jujubee brings her unique style to Phoenix for the first time this month. He’s Airline Inthyrath in “real life,” but once described drag as “Fiction. A train to leave this world and enter the heaven that I know.” He elaborated, “It’s kinda like when you’re children and you’d play house, or you were a superhero. You transform your mind to an imaginary land. Kinda like Where the Wild Things Are. I think every drag queen finds that side of it. There’s that excitement. You’re not so vulnerable; you don’t feel so bad. You’re in a character mood. Not that it allows you to be rude to anybody. That’s never smart,” he warned. “When everything comes off, it’s like stripping everything off and you’re yourself again. Jujubee’s fearless. She gets kind of crazy. As me, as Airline, I have fun, but I’m quiet. I like to people watch.” Airline worked as a make-up artist for Macy’s until Drag Race. Now Jujubee is a full-time career, providing him with a whole new avenue of opportunity. A love of travel and people stand out as highlights. “To be honest, I love meeting so many many different people and meeting so many different queens. That’s my favorite thing. Traveling to different states you see different talent and different art. How people view life. How they live. For example, I had chicken fried bacon in Omaha, Nebraska with Raven. I’d never heard of such a thing! Girl, it is amazing! It’s half an inch thick and covered in buttermilk batter, deep fried and drenched
in gravy. I try food wherever I go. I love to cook. I like to fuse Southern food with Laotian food – which my mother and father cooked. The flavors work really well together. Very similar. I’m a food lover!” He’s ready to sample the cuisine of the Southwest. “I love me some Mexican!” Jujuebee’s checked an appearance last month on the catwalk as a model at Fashion Week in New York City off of her bucket list. “It was chaos! Security was tight. There were so many models and I felt so short and so wide, but it was so fun! When it finally came together it was work! You walk down the catwalk – and that’s your performance. But on the way back it felt like everyone was staring at my back! Ellen DeGeneres was divine. Richie Rich is adorable; he’s a genius. He designed. He threw something together and said, “This is it!” I love MarcoMarco. He designed my costume for New Now Next Awards [on LOGO]. He’s amazing! Who knows? Maybe I can be a Gucci girl!” Between Drag Race and the spin-off Drag U, Jujubee has spent many Monday nights in America’s living rooms. It’s easy to feel like you already know her. “There are some people who are so genuine and I wish that I had more than eight seconds to talk to them. I hate that part about the job; I want to say ‘hi’ to everybody. It’s, like, ‘Oh my gosh! I have a new friend!’ I have so much support and here’s someone who sees that there’s an art in drag. Timberlake Chances are that you, or at least one person you know, have a Facebook account – a personalized page on one of the largest social networking websites to date. But do you know anything about how it came to be? In this new film directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en), Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland; Adventureland) stars as Mark Zuckerberg, one of the co-founders of Facebook. Set at Harvard in 2003, Zuckerberg comes up with the idea of starting a social networking website designed to recreate the club experience using a yearbook feel. Working with fellow Harvard students, his idea becomes an instant hit that amasses him immediate fame and glory, but at an incredible price. Based on the 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires, the critical response to The Social Network has already been overwhelmingly positive and while dramatizing the true story in such a way that makes Wall Street look like Sesame Street in comparison, the film does a remarkable job illustrating the trials and tribulations associated with having an idea and putting it into practice. Release Date: October 1, 2010.
Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Norton, Fight Club, The Incredible Hulk) has been serving time for starting the fire that ultimately killed his grandparents. Up for parole, he attempts to manipulate his parole officer, Jack Mabey (DeNiro, Sleepers, The Godfather: Pt II), using psychological games and a seductive wife (Milla Jovovich). Mabey, on the other hand, is just counting down the days until his retirement, but finds this new wrinkle to be the one that will jeopardize everything he’s worked so hard for. A thriller directed by John Curran (The Painted Veil), the film promises to be on par with other psychological thrillers like The Game and The Life of David Gale. Release Date: October 8, 2010.

After he’s arrested for murder and sentenced to life in prison, Betty Anne puts herself through high school, college and law school to make it possible for her to single-handedly mount a defense of her brother and overturn his conviction. An 18-year journey, it illustrates the tenacity of a family’s bonds, one woman’s personal conviction in her brother’s innocence, and what we’re capable of, when given the impetus to achieve. DVD Movie Review Plan B
Shut Up and Kiss Me
Written and directed by Marco Berger (The Clock), Plan B is a Spanish-language foreign film about a complicated love triangle. Bruno (Vignau) is dumped by his girlfriend, Laura (Quintero). When Bruno’s attempts to woo Laura back fall flat, he opts for Plan B – develop a close-knit relationship with her sexuallyambiguous boyfriend, Pablo (Ferraro), so that Pablo will ultimately leave Laura single again. Under the auspices of being a fan of the same show, Bruno and Pablo become friends and Bruno uses every available opportunity to plant the seeds of sexual doubt in Pablo’s mind. His plan works, but not in the way he foresaw. Despite the very devious way in which he comes between Laura and Pablo, Bruno manages to come across as incredibly sympathetic and his emotional about-face towards the end of the movie is a welcome change. Like many foreign-language movies, the film has a tendency to develop slowly and relies on many quiet, dialogue-free moments to illustrate the burgeoning feelings and confusion amongst the two main characters, but does so in a shyly gentle and earnest way.
A semi-autobiographical film written by Ronnie Kerr, Shut Up and Kiss Me is a modern-take on star-crossed love. Ben (Kerr) has reached an age where his romantic aspirations are more about quality and less about quantity. Despite his newfound intentions towards love, he’s having a hard time finding someone to reciprocate. That is, until he meets Grey (Gabelein), his sexy new neighbor who manages to go for his daily jog every day while Ben waters his lawn. The chemistry between the two is instant, but the differences of opinion on relationships present a challenge. How does one manage to be with the person they desire, the way they desire? Funny and touching, Shut Up and Kiss Me, presents a modern take on what we must do to bridge the gap between two perspectives on love.

It’s worth commenting that this ‘wich is not slathered with barbeque sauce, but refers more to the bird’s preparation, mercifully. Vegetarian? No problem. Bliss has a sandich Veggie Goodness with crispy eggplant. If you’re open to denizens of the deep, go for the Tempura Shrimp. Of course, Bliss has four divine salads to choose from. No sandwich or salad over $10. How great thou art! In the Speciality lane
you’ve got everything from Mama’s Pot Roast Dinner, a Baked Cod with cauliflower mashed spuds, and one of my favorites, the Grilled Chicken & Seasonal Veggie Skewers. It may sound predictable, but it’s really got something extra. And it’s actually on the healthy side. You’ll think you died and went to – well – Heaven. For something more sinful, try the rich, creamy Mac ‘n’ Cheese Loaded, which comes with bacon and chicken. Decadent. Most specialties hover around the $15 mark, while others are $7 to $9. Everything here (except the bread) is made in house – even the sauces. Try out their Weekend Brunch, served – funnily enough – on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with five eye-opening treats, like a Monster Egg Sandwich. Mich was ably assisted by local fabulosity Austin Head and the talented James Angel (l-r: James, Austin & Michael). Great stuff, but you might want to hang onto those Dynasty era Nagels, darling. They may come back in style! Some day. Maybe. Maybe not? And is it true? One of my favorite bartenders at a certain drinkateria described his own Breakfast of Champions to me: “A cigarette, one Xanax, and a DP.” I think he meant “Diet Pepsi.” Isn’t that what makes Brent Corrigan so popular in his blue movies?
