Introduction
Introduction
We are living in times of migration, overageing, increasing unemployment and poverty, a global climate change, economic crisis, religious and culture conflicts. Globalization embraces everybody’s life with all its positive but also negative aspects we all have to be aware of. A movement in the global and also national population becomes tangible. A desire for change is given, visible mainly in the political landscape. These varied circumstances require holistic approaches and concepts. The Alps are significantly affected by the global climate change. Regular pinpointed snowfalls cannot be longer presumed. Tourist places help themselves with the use of snow machines on the Greenfield. But they only work at low temperatures and they are not at all environmentally. Tourist places need new ideas and additional focus depending on the potential of their specific location. In parallel a demographic decline because of the rural exodus takes place in regions, valleys, small cities and communities of the alpine region. The global standardization of many products and their working processes effects a loss of local value creation, of jobs, of exploiting specific potentials, of traditional and cultural aspects, in general of the authenticity of regions and cultures as well as the individuality. Most of the energy flows in economic and/or planning respects culminate into the of course sensible densification of cities. Considering contemporary developments of cities and the resulting urban structures, it appears that many people want to settle on the outskirts to enjoy the urban atmosphere and as well the advantages of living close nature. Therefore: would it not make sense to implant a minimum of urban structures and infrastructures in rural regions in order to make a life there worthwhile? Regionalization can be an answer to globalization. Spatial development of a region or landscape needs a new design for the living environment created for human beings in every respect. This includes affordable accommodations, work, the necessary infrastructure like shopping, education, health, culture, entertainment, sports and leisure, an innovative mobility, communication and an intact nature. Public safety, a working social system, integration and ecology present us significant challenges.

Location At the end of the 19th century Cortina d’Ampezzo became known as a noble tourist spot in the Dolomites. During the 1st world war Cortina lost this privilege status. After the 2nd world war Cortina recovers again as a noble ski resort. Cortina organised the World Ski Championship already in 1932 and 1941 as well as the Winter Olympic Games in 1956. And now Cortina got again the contract for the World Ski Championship in 2021. Till 1970 the population increased to 8.500 inhabitants. Today there are living about 6.000 inhabitants in Cortina. 61 Years have passed since then. Cortina is still a noble ski resort, though the city has many problems with secondary residences. The residential population is displaced from foreign real estate buyers to the surrounding communities and a permanent price increasing takes place - similar as it happens in Kitzbßhel and St. Moritz. In the last decades Cortina has lost a little of its awareness level. The city is only seasonal enlivened, in the off season Cortina conveys a morbid but still nostalgic sophisticated atmosphere. Cortina will use the World Ski Championship 2021 to restructure and to invest, concerning particular the sportive equipments.
Project Objective Our aim is not to effect only selective measures but to develop a holistic programme for the future of Cortina and to change it to a competitive location, which could serve as a lighthouse project for other places with similar starting points. Therefore the task is to develop and to design a liveable space for Cortina, creative new models of life for all residents and to show typical solution scenarios, which make Cortina grow at least up to 10.000 people. Another aim of the project is to design a sustainable environment that is responsible towards nature and social aspects. It also is important to think about a regional
9
added value. Cortina should retain the status of a noble ski resort, but for the residents it is essential to offer a future-oriented liveable and economic attractive setting. In future it makes sense and it is necessary, that events like Olympic Games, World Ski Championships, Capital of Culture, .... do not invest only selectively and limited in time, but use the challenge to create forward looking urban concepts based on global tendencies and problems. The interventions of the projects should make Cortina to a central city in the Dolomites to relieve the bigger cities in the surrounding. Site Visit: Cortina
From 09.05.-11.05.2017 we spent Cortina a visit. It was vita to see the current situation of Cortina, but it was even more important that we had the opportunity to speak to the committee of the Ski World Championship Cortina 2021, local architects, the head of the Hotel Management Cortina, the head of the Cable Car Management Cortina, the head of Regole and the head for tourism for Cortina. Having the possibility to hear their problems and visions of Cortina from various points of view was a great input to our future work. Quickly a few major problems crystallized: Cortina is not international enough not enough connection to the outside of Cortina Hotels do not have what is requested by international market. Poor Infrastructure to and in Cortina not enough snow, snow cannons need to be active during night only 40% of the tourists ski, activity for the rest? Vision of the City (of the City Comity): Train or any good connection to Venice; this could be a fruitful connection due to the fact that people could combine their holiday with mountain and ocean activity. Improve mobility Public swimming pool The center of Cortina needs to be the functional heart They have the biggest collection of modernistic art in Italy New Train Connection to Venice and Bolzano via Val Bedia Culture is not the main tourism attraction, writers loved Cortina Creating an education center of some sort Our vision: Reconstructing the old Railways, Connect Venice and Bolzano Using the River, torrente Boite, as a main connection tool The main focus of our concept would be Art Different kinds of Centers along the river as connecting/meeting points: Sport, TV, Cultural, Education, Art and Museum. The new center becomes a museums areal A TV Show/Studio, if successful it can attract tourism Each hotel has to employ 1 or 2 Doctors and provide equipment A Forum (like Davos) once a year about Peace&War New town structure with new living concepts and a public pool

Infrastructure Analyse
Cortina is located in between a beautiful mountain scenery. Unfortunately it is very poorly connected to its surrounding cities which makes it very difficult to go there quickly. There is no train connection since the 1960s, which was a huge mistake to make a bicycle path out of the remains. Today it is a solid 2 hour drive by car to Venice and a 2 1/2 hour drive by car to Bolzano. With a recreation of the train connection it would be easy to connect Venice by an express train in 1 hour, which would again open a whole new kind of tourism. People can book a holiday at the Mediterranean sea but can enjoy a days visit into the mountain. That kind of holiday is rear anywhere in the world. Maybe they could even ski for a day and relax in the sea at night. In our Concept we try to address as many different groups as possible. By connecting existing structures with new buildings we want to create centers along the river which will bring new life into Cortina. The main station will be the biggest structure with many activities, which will connect the old city with our new city center. We identified existing buildings in the city which are important for our concept, now we try to connect them with our newly build structures to ensure a working assemble in the city. Which addresses the local population but also the tourism, from which Cortina could not live without.
Analysis
To relive the streets of Cortina from cars, we decided to create a E-Tram system that creates a circular connection around Cortina, with an extension to the south, the camping areal. Each center creates one stop of the Tram. In between the stops we will create different kinds of activities, indoor or outdoor, for the public to use.

Tourism Analyse
Cortina is known by the people as a luxury skiing resort in the Dolomites. In fact this image has changed quite a long time ago, the city management including the tourism section and the hotels lost the connection into the modern way of tourism way back in the 1970’s. To try and relive Cortina, with its many problems and challenges one must first look at some of the graphs of analysis. You can see a huge decrease in population since the 1960’s, this is mainly due to the lack of job opportunities but also due to the ridiculous real estate market situation. Prices per square meters have risen so high when Cortina had its high after the Olympics that it was very tempting for residents to sell their inherited property with enormous profit margin. The real estate situation is, in my opinion, one of the main reasons for Cortinas demographic change, especially in combination with the job market situation. In another graph we can see the vast population change through out the year. In the winter season tourist numbers are going up to 50.000 people per month. The summer season is still on the way up of becoming as popular as the winter season. The problems are the months in between the high season, where there is almost no life left in the city. Shops close for those months since they know their profit is not going to benefit from those month like April, May, June, October and November. Second Homes are also a huge competition towards the hotels in Cortina. Websites like Airbnb make it very easy for tourists to find more alternative and cheaper ways of holiday-making. The Snow Depth graph is showing a decrease over the years. Although a year with more snow in the middle can change the average. Todays global trends of snow depths show a decrease which will eventually completely affect the winter tourism of Cortina. Thus Cortina should think more ahead to be prepared for a high season during the summer. Since the winter without snow is not an attractive place for a skiing resort. Sunhours per month should therefore taken into account. Since the sun will be the new money maker for Cortina. Hard Facts Population Hight Highest Mnt. Size Languages Image

Rivers have always been helping mankind with connections, transportations or irrigations. Thus, we want to create a new center for Cortina along the river ‘Boite’. A E-Tram transportation system along the river will create perfect connections within Cortina, each stop of the tram will become a center of some sort to enable meeting points for the citizens and for the tourists. Two stations will be integrated into the cable car complexes to ensure easy and quick transfer between homes and hotels in the ski season. These will be called Sport centers, which not only include the cable cars and E-Trams but also in- and outdoor activities all year around. The main station, for our E-Tram and the longdistance service trains to Venice and Bolzano is located right next to the center, but still along the river. This station will become the main center of Cortina, next to the other small centers or meeting points. This center will include cultural activities like museums, theatre, cafes, restaurants, conference halls and Park&Ride space. These different types of cultural activities will be spread out in a way that it creates the perfect connection with the city center, e.g. one large pedestrian street with shopping and other activities leading from the center today to our new center. We also believe in the TV Industry of today, it is booming and literally everybody is watching TV these days. Therefore we created a TV Center, an area with TV studios, in which a TV series or TV documentaries about Cortina can be shot and edited. Beautiful sceneries can be the perfect background for a good show. “Un passo dal cielo” is a very successful TV show, located at the “Pragser Wildsee” in Alto Adige. This show attracted so many tourists to this lake that the visitor numbers went up to 15,000 per day. Unimaginable for such a small and hard to access nature phenomenon. Our main focus will be the arts and crafts scene. Through arts and crafts Cortina could relive a new upswing, with successful art museums, galleries and urban exhibitions can attract a new kind of tourism. Art in connection with culture can be a successful concept. A new forum can be invented with the topic of Peace&War, which takes place once a year and fetches the politics of our generations. Discussing current topics in a place where war used to be very present. This area or center will be located a bit up the hill and still at the river, maybe on both sides of the river. The “Sitterwerk” in St. Gallen was our motivation and reference for the arts areal in Cortina. The” Stitterwerk” is a great example for a place where artists can meet, learn, create and research. A library, different factories for steal, plastic and glass, cafeteria, nature around and ateliers are combined in this complex which creates the perfect working environment for artists to exfoliate themselves.

Art Center
Important for the E-Tram are stations that they are located in a lively area. Inhabitants, Artists, Tourists and Students should be “forced” into new environments to consciously feel the live that is going on around them.
Cultural Center
The goal of the Cultural Center is to merge it with the City Center. They should become one. The Cultual Center includes the main train station, so newly arrivals immediately get the feeling of beeing in the center.
TV Center
Important for the E-Tram are stations that are located in a lively area. Inhabitants, Artists, Tourists and Students should be “forced” into new environments to consciously feel the live that is going on around them. In this case at the TV-Center the Station for the Tram could be in between a window from a studio and a Cafe.
In this case at the Artist Center the Station for the Tram could be in between the different buildings used by the artists.
Sport Center
Theater Center
Camping Center
The main idea of the Sport Center is to create a building that includes the E-Tram as well as the Cable Car station. Bringing those two under one roof would improve the infrastructure during main tourism times. People do not have to use their cars to get to the lift anymore. This takes a lot of traffic from the streets.
Theater Center is a complex of various cultural activities, such as theater, musical, opera and cinema. A conference hall is already existing close by our newly planed theater center, so it would be great to just include it in the concept.
The station at the camping area, which is already existing in the south of Cortina, will be a build for the purpose of connectivity for tourists into the city, without a car. Especially interesting for campers since they mostly do not have a car and just a RV.

Artist could find working and living space in second homes owned by somebody in Cortina. The person who owns the house offers his home for writers, painters and other kinds of artists, in return the owner gets a percentage of the sold art work.
Communal Wellness
The problem of not enough wellness space is certainly a vital factor of the underdeveloped hotels of Cortina. Since the regulations make it almost impossible to create 5 start hotels it could at least be an idea to combine a few hotels together to create a common wellness area. One old hotel for example could be bought by 4 hotels and be renovated into an wellness complex.
Artist could find working and living space in second homes owned by somebody in Cortina. The person who owns the house offers his home for writers, painters and other kinds of artists, in return the artist will take care of the maintenance of the place, working for free as a janitor.
The mixed generation living could be a potential concept for affordable living! Students live for free in an Retirement Home, in return they have to work with the Retirees, read to them, play cards with them or just talk about their past. Of course the same can apply to artists, this way they might get new inspirations due to stories told from the older generations. Especially writers can benefit from this.
Hotel Doctors
New Homes
The closing of the hospital is a huge problem! Therefore it could be wise to employ one or two doctors per Hotel which can take care of guests and maybe also locals. Of course if some major operation has to take place then the person will need to be flown out to the nearest hospital. But Doctors could take care of broken bones, minor injuries and infections.

The Connecting River
In our Concept we try to address as many different groups as possible. By connecting existing structures with new buildings we want to create centers along the river which will bring new life into Cortina. The main station will be the biggest structure with many activities, which will create a connection through the city up to the area where the old main station used to be. The area of the old main station is located north of the city center, thus by making a new station in the south of the city and connecting them visually the entire city center will be widened to become one intriguing public square. A tent structure will cover most of the paths from one side to the other. If this concept proves to succeed, there will be no stopping for the growth of Cortina. New living spaces can be created, new schools and public facilities can be easily added to our master plan. Building a University will also attract students from all over the world to spent a short period in Cortina. A research center could be build for students and workshops. The other big bonus of Cortina will be the TV Station. A series filmed at the “Praggser Wildsee in South Tyrol has proven to be very fruitful for the tourism. Since the TV Industry is booming at the moment it will be very easy to create a TV show in Cortina, maybe just about the life in the alpine region.

Constant Pressure
To prevent Cortina from losing the connection again it would be very helpful to keep the tourism attractions and everything that is connected to it under constant pressure, Since the new hotel generation in the 1970’s stopped to gradually invest money into renovations of their hotels, they are now facing millions and millions of Euros worth of adjustment. The standard of the hotel goers obviously changed enormously over the past 50 years. People today want a clean and spacious design in combination with a great wellness area. Hotels of Cortina cannot offer any of that. Now would be the time to start investing heavily, even if it means to sell their second homes in Milano or around the world to make the right adjustments for the Ski World Championships 2021. The city management must also realise that tourist do not just appear by themselves. Therefore we propose a event timetable for the year. It must at least have 2 major events per month, this way tourists will come, will want to stay in nice hotels every day of the year, which on the other hand will force the hotels to constantly invest again. Not only the hotels but also restaurants and everything that serves the tourism will then stay constantly up to date. Since our proposal is to convert Cortina into an Art and Culture metropolitan these events must be Arts, Politics and Sports related. By creating some diversity in the programs they can attract different crowds from different parts and ages from around the world. Artists who work in Cortina all year around will be guaranteed a free spot in the main Gallery in the new center. By inviting well-known artists from around the world to create and exhibit their productions, it will be easier to attract art-tourists to Cortina. To not forget the newly timetable we want to create, it is vital to of course address each event in the right season and weather conditions. Snow sculpturing for example has been proven to attract people from around the world (all the way to Chile and China) to come to the Alps for a week in February to create a 3x3m snow sculpture with a possibility to win price money but also a luxury stay in a 5 star hotel in the city. In the summer their could be a surfing competition, yes a surfing competition. Creating a fake wave in a river has also been proven by Munich to attract surfing enthusiasts from around the globe to come and ride a wave in the center of Munich. Taking this idea and bringing it to Cortina in the summer can very well work out. Surfing in the Alps is certainly an experience not everybody can claim to have done. A forum about Peace & War can be held in the existing conference halls in Cortina. This can attract the politics from around the world, which again will lead to global appearance and will create an international stir.

Sitterwerk
Art and Production The aim of the non-profit Sitterwerk Foundation is to manage and further expand the Sitterwerk as an institutional center for art and production on the grounds of the former Sitterthal textile dye-works in St.Gallen. The Sitterwerk consists of the publically accessible institutions of the Art Library and Material Archive, the museum-like part of the Kesselhaus Josephsohn, and the Studio House for guest artists. The Foundation was established by Felix Lehner, Hans JĂśrg Schmid, and Daniel Rohner in 2006. The former Sittertal industrial site is used by various enterprises. The Kunstgiesserei, and a photo lab are situated here within a lively context. In these commercial enterprises and in the non-profit institutions of the Sitterwerk, artists, craftspeople, scholars in different disciplines, and an interested public come into contact. The infrastructure of the Art Library, Material Archive, and Studio House in the Sitterwerk is conducive to research and mediation and utilizes the synergies that arise between the diverse processes involved in the creation and preservation of art and cultural goods.
Research
The initial holdings of the Art Library come from the collections of Daniel Rohner and Felix Lehner and comprise ca. 25,000 volumes on art, architecture, and their history as well as on material and casting techniques. The Art Library is being continuously expanded, with the focus of new acquisitions on contemporary art and sculpture as well as their handcrafted production, casting techniques, materials research and iconography. The books have no fixed location on the shelves. Their order is instead dynamic and associative—users are able to rearrange the books again and again, but it is still possible to find them at any time thanks to radio frequency technology. This new technology for continuous inventory developed in the Sitterwerk provides a platform for exploring questions relating to the organization of knowledge and to artistic practice in dealing with archives.
38
39
In the Material Archive, the collection of materials is being further developed to provide art producers, architects, and designers access to selected material prototypes and samples. These are compiled and documented in cooperation with the neighboring Kunstgiesserei and the Verein Material-Archiv (Material-Archive Association). The Material Archive is therefore integrated within both the handcraft context of art production and a Switzerland-wide network with educational institutions. In the Kesselhaus Josephsohn, the works of the important sculptor are presented in a constantly changing selection, conserved, and processed for scholarly research in a catalogue raisonnÊ. The Galerie Felix Lehner in the Kesselhaus Josephsohn represents the estate of Hans Josephsohn—the time and effort involved in looking after the oeuvre in the Kesselhaus are financed through the sale of Josephsohn’s works. The use of the Studio House is based on a flexible concept. The studio advisory committee of the Sitterwerk Foundation each year invites between two and five guest artists to stay and work in the studios for several months. The Studio House is also used for projects such as workshops or cultural events. During the cold season of the year, one of the studios is made available as a workspace for artists based in the region and the largest studio is rented to the Kunstgiesserei. The institutions in the Sitterwerk host a loose sequence of projects and exhibitions related to their focuses: art, books, materials, knowledge structures, the production of three-dimensional art, and design. Through its activities, the Sitterwerk has developed a supra-regional and international profile and thus also contributes to strengthening the site as a whole. Mario Botta - MART, Rovereto
Since 2002, Mart Rovereto has been housed in the building designed by the Ticino-born architect, Mario Botta, in collaboration with Giulio Andreolli, an engineer from Rovereto. The building’s centre of gravity is the large glass and steel dome above the central access piazza to the Museum. The roof maintains a constant dialogue with light and covers an area of 1,300 square metres, is 25 metres high and has a diameter of 40 metres, exactly the same as the Pantheon in Rome. For the facades, Mario Botta chose a yellow stone of Vicenza to blend in with the 18thcentury setting of corso Bettini. Architecture that does not take into consideration the relationship with the town and surroundings is rejecting the most considerable part of its mandate”, he affirms. “At Rovereto, we started with a critical survey of what was already there – the corso, the buildings on it, the backdrop of mountains – attributing a relational role to our proposal”. The result is a dialogue between the Mart’s site and a series of historic, public and private buildings that announce the Museum while barely revealing it: Palazzo del Grano, Palazzo Alberti, the Teatro Zandonai and Palazzo dell’Annona. Around the Mart, to complete the Cultural Centre designed by Mario Botta, there are two other institutions: the Biblioteca Civica of Rovereto and Auditorium Fausto Melotti. The overall area occupied by the Mart is 29,000 square metres, of which 14,500 built over. On the ground floor, the Mart Rovereto has its bookshop, a conference room and 4,300 square metres of exhibition space. On the first floor of the Museum, there are two areas dedicated to temporary exhibitions, each of about 800 square metres, the education department and the offices. On the second floor, a glass and steel walkway leads to a second exhibition area of about 3,800 square metres. The Museum also has specialised Library, that is open to the public, and an Archive, containing 80,000 documents – papers, writings, drawings, photographs and press cuttings – together with 60,000 books. Finally, there is a large space in the open air dedicated to site-specific installations. (source: http://www.mart.trento.it/venue)

Renzo Piano - MuSe, Trento
The area extends from the railway line and Palazzo delle Albere, on Via Monte Baldo, up to the left bank of the River Adige. This area has an extremely high potential, but is constrained between two physical and psychological barriers to the east and west:the railway, separating the area from the town’s nearby historical centre, and Via Sanseverino, which acts as an urban boundary between the area itself and the river’s natural environment. The project is mainly aimed at reintegrating the existing urban landscape and exploiting the site’s relationship with the river environment by making better use of its natural resources. The project’s secondary goal is to urbanize these localities, which for social and cultural reasons have become marginalized with respect to the rest of the city, by including a range of different structures (such as residences, office buildings, shops, cultural venues, conference centers and recreational areas) and by concentrating their volumes within just one sector of the area in order to free up enough space for a large park. This new district is primarily characterized by its innovative urban fabric, which features a specific dimensional hierarchy of roads, pathways, squares and open spaces. Via Sanseverino and Via Monte Baldo provide Road access to the area. This new urban fabric is also relatively traffic-free. It is restricted to residents, taxis and public transport, and offers numerous pedestrian walkways that wind into the courtyards of certain building complexes. The new district therefore offers an atmosphere of meeting places, open spaces, workplaces and trade areas, where individuals can easily get around on foot and explore the large number of aggregation points within this widely varied environment. The main east-west streets, which traverse the railway embankment in order to unite the new road scheme with that of the existing urban fabric, are lined along their entire length by two rows of trees, and lead directly into the park area on the shores of the River Adige, where cultural and recreational centers are expected to arise. In accordance with the plans that have already been established by the City Council, it will be necessary to construct new railway underpasses for vehicles and pedestrians, to render this connection both physically and visually feasible. In fact, due to the height, the cadence and dimensional scale of the buildings themselves, which are comparable to those of the city’s historic centre and the existing industrial structures, the project favors a horizontal interpretation of the relationship between the new buildings and the open spaces foreseen by the design. Grafton Architects - UTEC, Lima
The project for the new University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) building is located in a lot in the district of Barranco facing Malecón Armendariz on the oceanfront, Almirante Grau Avenue, Medrano Silva Street and Enrique Barrón Street. The project consists of reinforced concrete structural plates perpendicular to Malecón Armendáriz, among which the different project environments such as classrooms, laboratories, offices, gardens, etc. are developed. The geometry of the structural plates with an „A“ section and the composition of the volumes responds to the search of Grafton Architects to create a „man-made cliff“, a topography that is integrated with the surrounding environment. The whole building has 10 floors with a large garden area at level 06 and the roof at level 09. The plates with an „A“ section lean toward Malecon Armendariz, while the project is staggered towards Barranco to join the scale of the surrounding buildings. The unique condition of Lima is the point of origin for the design. The dramatic relationship between Lima and the sea, huge cliffs that define the boundary between the city and the sea, the green valleys turned inland from the sea to the city, all these features were the starting points for the project. The UTEC site is part of one of these green “fingers” that connect the sea with the city. Given this location, the project for the new UTEC campus is conceived as a “man-made cliff,” a continuation of the cliffs at the edge of the sea, clearly defined on its new location. To the north, the site faces a system of high traffic routes but also faces a further extension of the city. The project involves the facade to the north as one of the main facades of the proposal, visible from the surrounding city and the traffic flow, and from this point we seek to consolidate the image of the university in the public mind. While the north facade acts as a “cliff” to a fast moving city, the south facade is staggered over a series of gardens that seek to integrate with the lower urban scale of this part of the district of Barranco. From the first level to the “loggia” on the highest point, the landscape is woven throughout the building. The landscape faces the south predominantly, but it is integrated with and visible from the north facade “cliff”. The project represents the obvious juxtaposition between what is created by man and what is organic. The entry of natural light is spun through the sections. The landscape of the campus is carefully defined in relation to the humidity of the environment, with taller trees on natural terrain; smaller trees on classrooms and a desert of stones is proposed for the “loggia” level. The landscape is integrated into the design of the south facade for this facade towards Barranco to have the appearance of a vertical garden. Connecting River
1st Design
Our first design idea was to create some sort of pavilion/tent structure which can host different activities underneath it. The organic structures around them, will be created to host new housing structures inside.

In our Concept we try to address as many different groups as possible. By connecting existing structures with new buildings we want to create centers along the river which will strengthen the new life of Cortina. By creating working spaces for artists in Cortina, we aim to attract a whole new community. Giving artists the chance to reconstruct an forgotten area has proven to be very successful in the past. For example the old Factory areal in Tallinn called Teleskivi was given to artists by the city and is today one of the major hotspots in Tallinn. We would also like to try this experiment in Cortina since it has not failed any city that we know of. Soon, forgotten and ruined areas will be redesigned by artists to become new centers for locals and tourists. The area of the old train station was what we thought of, there artists can settle down in existing buildings, with newly created spaces inside to visualize their dreams. From there on a public square, as we call it, wriggles down to the new train station that we designed, which is located at the river, close to the church of Cortina. This connection will be visualized with one pavement structure from the old train station, through the city center to the new train station. The small interventions along the river, or over the river, are made for sport activities or artist activities. These modules can vary along the river to reinforce the small riverbed with life. The river area is poorly accessible which is very unfortunate, all this beautiful land is wasted for nothing. To improve these areas we thought of the system of activities which can happen right on top of the river. This way unused land can be used, in a creative and innovative way. It can be just a half pipe on top of the river for skaters to use, or it can be a covered platform for artists to draw peacefully with the noise of the river rushing beneath them. All in all, Cortina has many possibilities to become a rural part of northern Italy. It is important that every member of the society believes in one Concept and is willing to invest for it. First up: A new Train connection, in combination with new artist spaces in Cortina!

European Architecture 11 Workshops at 6 Universities +1 Master’s Thesis The two-year training is structured around a series of 8 project workshops + 1 reflective workshops at 6 different higher education institutions: Urban planning as well as architectural and artistic issues – open questions virulent to the cities & regions of the participating universities – will be examined at all scales; multidimensional planning processes, design and communication strategies constitute integral parts of a democratic culture of building to transform existing buildings and urban quarters with regard to ecological sustainability. Problems will be resolved in the context of cultural heritage and pre-existing structures. The postgraduate programme is a unique and innovative approach to international architectural education: it combines the idea of the classical artist journey with the intensive, interdisciplinary and project-oriented workshop tradition and teamwork, focusing on acute topics generating architectural knowledge and dialogue across greater Europe between cities as Tallinn, Lisbon, Helsinki, Dessau, Ljubljana, Innsbruck and Haifa.
