From looking at satellite views on google of f1. The ovel square and f2. Rochester docks we came to the decision to use commercial fishing as inspiration for our design developmen. Carrying out the research we intend to look at clothing (overalls/jumpsuits), hooks, nets, floats, tools and gloves as well as how we could use the fish or sea life into prints.
Looking through the images myself and partner have taken to the concept of ‘Being comfortable in uncomfortable spaces’ which I have looked into the extent migrants go through to get to a better life.
This then linked with the original imagery as most migrants tend to tend to travel on boats as well as the juxtaposition of the boats on the canal where people live into the extent migrants go through or as shown in the images below dangerous places to be transported.
I have chosen to look into fishing clothing as inspiration - more specifically Thai Fishermen. These images show an elegance of their movements as well as the delicateness of the clothes being worn. The wrap and folded pants mixed with loose flowing shirts give the feeling of air even when shirts are done up the effortlessness carry a calmness to the images. I would like to bring this into the concepts of ‘Being Comfortable in Uncomfortable spaces' as there is a big importance to being comfortable when in nervous or hiding from the world or emotions itself.
I wanted to look into ‘bumbags’ as it is a constant trend that is both useful and fashionable. The way they are worn can change an outfit. In this sense, I wanted to focus on the purpose of carrying belongings around. Linking back to the uncomfortable spaces migrants find themselves in, the use of a garment that can carry things and be one is very useful.
