This selection of plants is recommended for bioretention because of their ability to handle drought conditions. Planted throughout the site, they clean incoming water before it reaches the ocean. Larger trees and shrubs are placed on the middle and top of the slope where the drainage is better. Most of the perennials are placed at the lowest point because they handle inundation well.

ACTIVE AND OPEN AREAS 6’ 5’ 4’ 3’ 2’ 1’ 0’ 1’ 2’

Active areas have plants with bright flowers and limited texture palettes. A simpler palette is less distracting to players focusing on their rigorous activity. Bright, warm tones can subconsciously excite the nervous system. Passive areas have a wider range of color, texture, and fragrance. Textures are typically softer to captivate the interest of strollers and observers. Colorful, fragrant plants such as the Butterflybush attracts butterflies, birds, and insects to encourage fauna. The restaurants provide balanced, and nutritious options for hungry users. Eating areas are found indoors and outdoors for user preferences. Seating terraces are close by to transform a food adventure into a nice picnic with an ocean view.

14

Along the ocean, out-looks allow users to view the Pacific and its wildlife. The local community provides art that is showcased at the out-looks, active areas, and secluded spaces. The art pieces are changed seasonally to continuously encourage users to return and experience the space in a new way.

Site Analysis

Understanding the site and its context is important for user comfort. New residents have to overcome steep terrain to access hospitals, grocery stores, and bus stops. Residents also have the chance to experience the views of San Luis Obispo’s magnificent hills, warm sun, and cool breezes coming from the north east. NTS

The hearth anchors the community space and brings people together. Extended ledges offer seating opportunity for residents to gather and bond. The hood frames the flame when lit, and acts as a statement piece when off.

Simplistic screens offer privacy for dining and entertainment. Different materials can change the overall look and feel of the space. A soft, wooden material provides a calm, relaxing area. A decorative metal panel livens up the space. SECTION 1
