This selection of plants are recommended for bioretention. Planted throughout the site, they clean incoming waters before it reaches the ocean. Large trees and shrubs are placed on middle and top of the slope. Most of the perennials and placed on the bottom of slopes because they handle inundation very well. Many of these plants also handle drought and sunlight well.

The site is divided into different sections where certain plants will appear. Active areas have plants with bright lowers and a limited texture palette. This helps players focus on their game and tasks. Relaxation areas have a wider range of color, texture, and scent. Textures are typically softer, and interesting for viewers to stroll and observe. Plants such as the Butterly-bush attracts butterlies, birds, and insect. 15

The restaurants provide various balanced, and nutritious options for hungry users. Eating areas are found indoors and outdoors for user preferences. Seating terraces are close to transform a food adventure into a nice picnic with a view.

16

Venturing out to the ocean, out-looks allows users to view the Paciic and its wildlife. Art from locals are also showcased here and throughout active, and secluded spaces. These art pieces are temporary installations to maintain interest over time.

Lepidoptera Summer 2014 - Winter 2015 Transitions Mental Health Association give people an opportunity for a better life. This design is a small community where people struggling with mental illnesses can interact, exercise, relax, heal, and grow in San Luis Obispo. Lepidoptera is a healthy living space for self-achievement. 18

Site Analysis A big emphasis is on site analysis of the local area. New residents have to overcome steep terrain to access hospitals, grocery stores, and bus stops all within 20 minutes walking distance. The views and experiences of walking around the area is lovely. Residents can enjoy magniicent views on San Luis Obispo’s hills, the warm sun, and cool breezes coming from the north east. 21

After examining how spaces best mix together, and analyzing schematic designs, Lepidoptera is a supportive campus that offers comfort and personal growth to its residents. Many key elements provide the opportunity for social interaction, physical exercise, self-relection, relaxation, and more. Residents are given everything needed for healthier living. Here they can go beyond the horizon and open doors to a new life, and perspective on the world. 25

The Gambelia Experience Fall 2015 The Blunt Nosed Leopard Lizard (BNLL) face a lot of issues from humans and nature. Agricultural ields have fragmented their habitat, and caused a big drop in their population. Climate change is also affecting the amount of offspring that are laid and hatched. They need more connected areas of habitat in an area that will not have drastic temperature and precipitation luctuations. Since lat lands are attractive, they can easily move across roads, but these systems are hazardous with cars roaming the highways. A safe place would be miles away from trafic. 30

Tank Farm Winter 2015 - Winter 2016 Spreading over 330 acres of land, Tank Farm offers the opportunity for locals and visitors of San Luis Obispo, to learn about the importance of preserving and restoring natural wetlands. Interesting land formation are scattered everywhere due to the historic oil tanks that resided there. Now, wonderful vernal pool habitats ill the site with birds, small mammals, reptiles, and rare fairy shrimp. 40

Site Analysis of Contaminants Tank Farm contain multiple types of contaminants. Areas containing arsenic are very dangerous. It is within the irst 2 feet of soil, and pose a risk to construction workers for commercial and open spaces. The second threat causing problems during construction is the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) found 4-28 feet deep into the soil. The crude oils (PAH) and the TPH are especially poisonous for ish and wildlife inhabiting the waters. 42

Site Analysis of Contaminants There are a number of fairy shrimp habitats existing around areas of contamination. They are affected directly and indirectly. Some population is fairy shrimp have more contact with the contaminants than others. However, LNAPLs can low in the waters of the wetlands and affect the fairy shrimp down stream where there are less contaminants present. 43

BEST FOR DEVELOPMENT Finding the intersection of all the layers leads to 66 acres of usable land that is lets human develope in a non contaminated area, without disturbing natural habitats.

DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT DISTURBING WETLAND HABITATS In addition to fairy shrimp habitats, Tank Farm provides a refuge for salmon, and multiple aquatic birds important for the life of it’s ecosystem. Shaded are areas that will not disturb wetland habitats for the beneit of most animals on site. 107 acres

DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT DISTURBING FAIRY SHRIMP The shaded area are locations for development without disturbing lands .25 miles away from their natural habitats. 159 acres

AREA OF CONTAMINATION These white puddles are have harmful TPHs and PAHs and more. It is recommended to do further research on these areas, mitigate, and restore the area for habitat space or future development. 109 acres DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT CONTAMINATION The lighter shade of magenta are ares that are acceptable for people to develop and recreate without worry of pollutants and contaminants. However, not all the space is recommended for development because of precious habitat space. 223 acres SITE BOUNDARY Site boundary is in magenta, while the blue polygon represents an runway protection zone within the site. Development within the protection zone, outlined in blue, should not contain activities which allows more than 5 people per acre. Areas outside of the runway protection zone can contain on average 40 people per acre. 332 acres 44

Focusing on the negative space of the contamination and habitat maps result in the developable areas. The white or lightest areas are valuable wetlands containing toxins. Further remediation of the habitat should focus on the Southern half. Darker shades of magenta suggest more suitable spaces for development of open space. The darkest shaded area is the best place for intense development such as commercial, housing, etc. It will not disturb precious habitats and keep people away from toxic soils. Intense development should not be in the airport runway. 45

Mix use spaces welcome locals and people coming out of the airport. People from everywhere can stop to eat, shop, and chat. 46

Cars will snake through this parking jungle and keep cool under the beating sun. Trees provide shade and nice scenery.

Tank Farm Rd. transforms into a complete street for the comfort and safety of drivers, bikers, and pedestrians.

Large overhanging platforms provide magniicent views of vernal pools over 500’ in diameter, 20’ in the air. 47

Calm Before the Storm Spring 2014 Before the storm Run through the rain, Waltz with the wind, Stroll in the snow. An aids memorial walk that rejuvenates those affected through a series of peaceful paths meant for wandering and relecting. 48

Here lies a pebble. Welcoming the coming storm, Rippling all life.

Hear all the wind chimes. Acknowledge the butterlies, and listen to bees.

Breathing can be tough, but feel this pure soft snowlake. Take every moment.
