CHRONICLES - JOSÉ OLIVEIRA Hi José Oliveira, give us some background, how long ago did you start shooting and what made you start in this world of photography? I started around 17 years old, motivated by the photographs that my father took for a long time, mainly of the family. Do you remember the click that sparked your passion for photography? The click came with the attempt to photograph automobile evidence. Who are your main influences on photography? And outside of it? It's commonplace, but it's hard to escape Cartier-Besson's genius, the soul that Salgado brings to his work and, of course, the master Eduardo Gageiro. Outside photography, perhaps Eça de Queirós (I would have loved to photograph those characters in Lisbon at that time) or Manuel Alegre's poems sung by Adriano Correia de Oliveira. Curiously, Manuel Alegre's poems, perhaps due to the cover of the album “O Canto e as Armas”, make me see the world in black and white. I notice that most of your photos are street photos. Why choose street photography? Love at first sight or did you discover your relationship with street photography over time? I think street gives more creative freedom, it's where you capture the soul of those who are photographed, the whole world is our studio.

CHRONICLES - JOSÉ OLIVEIRA The photographers' creative process is often overlooked. Can you tell me a little about your processes? Not in terms of equipment or technique, but in terms of motivations, from finding a place to photograph to the final photograph. The good thing about the street is that any place can create situations to make a good photograph. Any character that passes by, depending on the angle, framing, state of mind, etc., can give you the puppet you are looking for. To take a photograph I returned 3 days in a row to the pink street in Lisbon, but most of them appear from the moment.

CHRONICLES - JOSÉ OLIVEIRA I notice that one of the places that José Oliveira photographs regularly is Lisbon. Any special reason? I lived in Lisbon for many years, I return there frequently, so it was and is the one that is closest to hand. In addition to this reason, the streets (mainly in the old neighborhoods) and the thousands of characters that cross them, greatly facilitate creativity and the moment. But Paris is my favorite city to photograph, especially in Autumn/Winter.

CHRONICLES - TADEU VILANI Hi Tadeu Vilani, give us some background, how long ago did you start shooting and what made you start in this world of photography? Hello, friends at Photographers, I've been photographing and developing photographic projects since 1993, curious about life, I was starting to photograph and express myself, photography was the path that seemed most viable. Do you remember the click that sparked your passion for photography? When faced with this question, it's always a retrospective and a look back along the way, but a photo in particular that I took in Paraguay, in a Guarani indigenous reserve, in January 1999, made me feel like a photographer, it's a simple photo and simple, a portrait of an indigenous girl, that subtlety gave me the basis to continue my search for photography, the journey continues until today and I continue looking for the next photo and telling stories.

CHRONICLES - TADEU VILANI Who are your main influences on photography? And outside of it? When I started shooting for the newspaper Zero Hora, in Porto Alegre, in southern Brazil, the main reference was the photographers themselves, I had to look at the local production and understand what a newspaper was looking for from its photographers, but I like to emphasize that the photographer Sebastião Salgado, and his book “Trabalhadores”, was what gave me a lot of energy and search for the documentary achievements I have been carrying out over the years. Cinema was very important, I discovered cinema long before photography, my childhood and youth were filled with black and white films,, I like to mention that Italian neo-realism was and still is important in thinking about photography.

CHRONICLES - TADEU VILANI I notice that most of your photographs are documentary photography. Why choose documentary photography? Love at first sight or was this your relationship with documentary photography discovering over time? When I started working in 1996, at the newspaper Zero Hora, I had already been making some documentaries, but when I got into photojournalism, I thought and reflected that it would be important to keep a documentary photography in parallel over the years, which is very similar to photojournalism, the difference is time and urgency, photojournalism is dynamic, of course there is this in the documentary, but in most projects, there is a time to photograph, a time to wait, a time to get it right, there is a time to contemplation and looking at the documentary project, I like that, I identify with long-term projects, within this documentary perspective I like portraits, which make me reflect, I think I know the light in every look, I seek the light I don't understand , there I find a little of myself. mportant in thinking about photography.

CHRONICLES - TADEU VILANI I also notice that you have a special taste for black and white photography, why this choice? The choice of black and white is very simple to explain, it was Italian neo-realist cinema, it's my visual memory, along with the black and white television we had at home that permeated my childhood in the 70s, the images were in these shades of colors. All this accompanies me when taking pictures.

CHRONICLES - TADEU VILANI The photographers' creative process is often overlooked. Can you tell me a little about your processes? Not in terms of equipment or technique, but in terms of motivations, from finding a place to photograph to the final photograph. I believe that every photographer goes out into a sharp field, in a process of creativity and facing the unusual, even knowing that some situations are predictable, the spark of curiosity has to be on, to drive the photographing process. Sometimes I don't look for the perfect photo, I live with plans that I don't always know how to write with the exact light, I just try not to smother the imperfection, at some point I'll get the focus right, the light. I prefer emotion to reason, it is obvious that knowing how to balance is important, but it is impossible not to follow the heart.

CHRONICLES - TADEU VILANI Whenever you go out to photograph, have you studied everything already or do you let yourself be carried away by the moment? Usually when I go on a trip, the rational process of formatting the whole that revolves around a trip is important, it is necessary to know several factors, such as: weather, distance, local contacts, all this logistics is essential, after everything formatted, I prefer emotion to reason, never forgetting that navigating the fine line between reason and emotion is a difficult balance, sometimes diving and letting yourself be carried away by your heart and living in the moment is essential to return to the surface with some photos.

CHRONICLES - TADEU VILANI I notice that Tadeu Vilani regularly photographs Brazil. Any special reason? I'm Brazilian, and I know or think I know where I live, my life references are here, so looking at my life and its surroundings was the natural way to take pictures. In these years I have been expanding my journeys across borders, through the south of South America, Cuba and India, they are the favorite places at the moment, but I am always open to new possibilities and experiences, but the word saudade hits and tightens, the look and the heart turn to the south of Brazil, where I live, it's a necessity. Photography is a little of what I know, and a lot of what I don't know. There's always the next photo to tell me, which I don't know much about. The big story for me in photography is the search, and after the encounter, the gaze continues.
