CHRONICLES - PETKO ATANASOV My name is Petko Atanasov.I was born in a small town in Bulgaria called Pavlikeni. I am 47 years old. I am a police officer by profession. I like to take pictures of people on the street. Hi Petko Atanasov, give us some background, how long ago did you start shooting and what made you start in this world of photography? When I was a little boy, I enrolled in an analog photography course. However, my real journey into the world of photography began in 2006, when I bought my first digital camera. Do you remember the click that sparked your passion for photography? The click that sparked my passion for photography was Steve McCurry‘s “Afghan girl“. I first saw it in the early ‘90s on the cover of National Geographic magazine. I would never forget those eyes. Who are your main influences on photography? And outside of it? There are many photographers I follow. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Steve McCurry, Sebastião Salgado, Rui Palha ... There are so many different photographers in history and in present days, it would be a mistake to follow and learn from just one. We have to enjoy the variety of photographers around us.

CHRONICLES - PETKO ATANASOV I notice that most of your photos are street photos. Why choose street photography? Love at first sight or did you discover your relationship with street photography over time? In the beginning, my passion was portrait photography. You know- the face in the foreground, nice bokeh in the background. My entire collection of lenses was tailored to this type of photography - long lenses and fast aperture. At one point I decided to create "Project 365" - for a year to take a picture every day to finally see how I develop. But that required me to leave the long lenses on and buy a small, discreet camera that would always be in my pocket. I took a Fujifilm X100F and it changed my worldview. I learned to see people in the context of their environment. From then until now, I look for meaning and story in each photo. The portraits contain feelings, but a picture of a man in his environment tells a story. I also notice that you have a special taste for black and white photography, why this choice? There's a quote from Ted Grant that I really like: "When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!" There is nothing more to add.

CHRONICLES - PETKO ATANASOV The photographers' creative process is often overlooked. Can you tell me a little about your processes? Not in terms of equipment or technique, but in terms of motivations, from finding a place to photograph to the final photograph. I don't have a special shooting method. The main thing for me is to always have a camera with me. Every day something interesting happens around us, we just have to catch it. That's why I always carry a camera when I'm on the streets. The important thing is that it is in my hand, not in my pocket or bag. The interesting moment always lasts exactly one moment, then flies away. Whenever you go out to photograph, have you studied everything already or do you let yourself be carried away by the moment? The photos I take are not static. There are photographers who shoot according to the composition. Others shoot according to light and shadow. Each way of photography has its own charm. My way is to take pictures of people when they are in their daily lives. When they work to make a living. When they rest. When they rejoice or play. I photograph people when they are themselves. I notice that Petko Atanasov regularly photographs Bulgaria. Any special reason? Bulgaria is my homeland. As a photographer who loves to take pictures of people, I am lucky to live here. People in Bulgaria are spontaneous and natural. They know how to express their feelings, I just need to be around them to capture them.

CHRONICLES - DAN LESZEK Hi Dan Leszek, give us some background, how long ago did you start shooting and what made you start in this world of photography? Hi! I've been interested in photography for quite a long time. First, it was analogue photography, but the beginning of my true passion can be traced back to 2006 when I bought my first SLR Canon camera- it was a Canon EOS 30D, which is still in my possession. To be honest, my photography beginnings were very chaotic: family, macro, celebrations, street, landscapes- I was looking for my own way all the time, but I simply couldn't decide and I was unsatisfied with the results I achieved. Do you remember the click that sparked your passion for photography? In fact, I do. It was a photograph of flowers in the garden taken on 17/03/2015, which marked the beginning of my adventure in close up photography. However, I do remember a moment when in the fall of 2014 I went to the meadows and sat down among the grass that was waving in the wind like an ocean. I began to realize how beautiful and special the macro world is. It was a breakthrough in my search and then I started to choose and look for analogue glasses that were able to show what I can see. That's how my adventure with close up photography began. The 2015 photograph I mentioned before only confirmed this direction.

CHRONICLES - DAN LESZEK Who are your main influences on photography? And outside of it? Today there are so many people in photography, who would be worth mentioning that we wouldn't actually have enough space and time to accommodate them all. Today, no matter what field of photography you occupy you must follow the world of photography to feel its presence so that it becomes so tangible that you yourself become its part. I like the work of many artists, but my soul turns somewhere to the surreal world, that's why the first place belongs to Salvador Dali and when it comes to more contemporary artistsDariusz Klimczak. I notice that you're specialized in macro photography. Why choose macro photography? Love at first sight or did you discover your relationship with macro photography over time? Yes, close up photography is definitely my cup of tea. As I mentioned, this love can be traced back to autumn 2014 when I was enchanted by the beauty of the meadows. But the truth is that every time when you go (even in the same place) in the open air, and you sit down for a while in the silence you can hear that it's all alive, you can see that plants and insects all belong to a living ecosystem. This is what I want to share and show how I see it, hence my play with light, color, details. This is the passion I would love to share with others. I also notice that you have a special taste for colour photography, why this choice? Yes, that's true. To be honest I love black and white photography, I love watching it as it simply hypnotizes me, unfortunately the field of photography I chose needs color and appropriate light. It requires a certain amount of sensitivity and subtlety as well as a fresh look at the macro world surrounding us. I try to show it the way I see it and this is the main reason for my choice.

CHRONICLES - DAN LESZEK The photographers' creative process is often overlooked. Can you tell me a little about your processes? Not in terms of equipment or technique, but in terms of motivations, from finding a place to photograph to the final photograph. Yes, this is an interesting phenomenon because at the beginning everything took quite a long timechoosing the right optical equipment, places, the right time of day, usually some scouting beforehand. Today this task is simplified as I know what time of the day to go for this or another place, I know what to expect, I know what I want, I know what the light will be like (and the light is key) so the whole preparatory process is much shorter... not less demanding, but shorter. When i go for a photoshoot today I have everything planned in my head and thanks to that later the preparation of the photo itself is a process much less time consuming than it was in the beginning. Whenever you go out to photograph, have you studied everything already or do you let yourself be carried away by the moment? Probably none of us, no matter what photography genre we specialize in, is prepared for everything. Moreover, I think that all of us who photograph outdoors in fact like to be surprised by the situation and the weather changes. This is only evidence that very often photographs created in such circumstances turn out to be unique. I think that each of us goes for a photoshoot, hoping for such a situation that will make him think outside of the box and creating this unique frame that fellow photographers would envy.

CHRONICLES ANTÓNIO BERNARDINO COELHO PORTUGAL

PORTFOLIO

CHRONICLES - ANTÓNIO BERNARDINO COELHO My name is Antonio Bernardino Martins Coelho, I am from a small village in the north of Portugal, Recarei in Paredes. I am 40 years old, married and father of two girls. I work as an electrical engineer. A taste for painting was evident in me early on, but it was only in 2010 after a trip to Cuba that I became interested in photography, having captured a lot of images. However, having a small SONY digital camera, I started to acquire analog equipment and to develop the activity of learning photography in a self-taught way, using very old and medium format cameras. The real awakening for photography started here. With a Zeiss Ikon Nettar and two rolls of Kodak Portra and Ilford FP4 film. I soon started to develop a taste for experimental photography and I won my first photography contest at the Lomographic embassy in Porto. That's how I felt a huge love for experimental photography on medium format 120 film. It was only in 2015 that I bought my first DSLR and since then I have developed skills in digital photography and digital image processing. I have particularly interest in still life, landscape, conceptual and architecture. In 2017 I get my first victory in international competitions, in still life, at the Xposure festival, in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Since then I have participated in many national and international competitions, having conquered podium places in competitions with high recognition. In 2018 I achieved the title of Portugal National Award at the Sony Awards, and commended at the same contest. The same feat is achieved in 2020, with the same title, Portugal National Award at the Sony Awards and shortlisted in still life. And in 2021, a series of my photographs that address the problem of plastic on the environment and food, is an integral part of the exhibition at the Xposure festival, in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

CHRONICLES - ANTÓNIO BERNARDINO COELHO Hi António, give us some background, how long ago did you start shooting and what made you start in this world of photography? The fact that I started with analog photography allowed me to learn photography at its base. In 2015 I start shooting with a DSLR. It was a step towards what I do today. I started to photograph small things, plants, some images of nature and the city (Porto). From then until today, I changed my path in photography, perhaps influenced by the attempt to present a different view of reality as we see it. Do you remember the click that sparked your passion for photography? Yes, of course, this occurred during my 2010 trip to Cuba. In addition to being the honeymoon, it was also the trip to a country that I really liked to know. At that time, I didn't even think much about photography. The camera was a small Sony digital machine. However, I took hundreds of pictures. That was the beginning. Interestingly, a short time later I leave the digital and start with a special interest in the analog. With 120 film machines as I mentioned earlier. Who are your main influences on photography? And outside of it? I cannot say that I have an idol in photography. I really like several current photographers and others like Ansel Adams, who even had a very interesting phrase: "You don't take a photograph, you make it..." I met artist Fabian Oefner in Sharjah in 2017 when I won the Xposer contest in the still life category. I loved your work and your vision. I think it created a huge impact and allowed me today to look at simple things and try to create complex images or images with a message. An artist I always loved was Vitor Vassarely. Victor Vasarely was a Hungarian painter and sculptor based in France, considered the "father of OP ART". I particularly like the geometries and colors he presented, which are an inspiration for the creation of colorful images that I try to present.

www.instagram.com/antonio_bernardino_/ 28

CHRONICLES - ANTÓNIO BERNARDINO COELHO I notice that most of your photos are conceptual photography. Why choose conceptual photography? Love at first sight or did you discover your relationship with conceptual photography over time? Exactly. This came with time, although the fact of wanting to show something different with photography was always present. Even in film photography (I often used expired or inverted film).. Today we see more and more images using digital alteration and why not using photography, create something different without being too processed? I think it makes sense. Today I do a lot of conceptual photography using simple elements (plastic, metals, paper, etc) with a simple objective: to convey a message. Paul Nicklen, a Canadian wildlife photographer, whom I also met in 2017 at the Xposure festival, said just that. An image must have a message, a pretext to be displayed, it must create in the viewer one or more sensations or opinions. Of course, it can also simply create the effect of rejection or disliking, but likes are relative. Today, in addition to the conceptual style, I am starting to improve my taste in architecture, I have already contacted some entities that manage well-known buildings in the North of Portugal, in order to explore this very thing, some details of these same buildings. The photographers' creative process is often overlooked. Can you tell me a little about your processes? Not in terms of equipment or technique, but in terms of motivations, from finding a place to photograph to the final photograph. So far I haven't mentioned, for example, the enormous pleasure that I get from photographing mushrooms. Every year I shoot hundreds of images. This year did not go the way I wanted, but when it comes to the creative process, it starts with simple things, for example, today we are experiencing a revolution against plastic, although I do not completely agree with the idea that people have against plastic.

www.instagram.com/antonio_bernardino_/ 29

CHRONICLES - ANTÓNIO BERNARDINO COELHO Without it, today we would have heavier vehicles, higher consumption planes, etc. Of course, it has its dark aspect, when you don't recycle or put an end to this material. So simple ideas with plastic elements come easily as a heart made of colored bottle caps, with reference to venous and arterial blood, for example, can simply give the idea that we ingest plastic. This is an example. One of my last series, about the consumption of the planet's natural resources, came with a plate, a small globe and some colored cardboard. Behind this comes the opposition of ideas (yin-yiang), complementary colors, symmetrical geometries, etc. The creative process usually appears in my daily life with something I see, witness or news and transpose to photography. Whenever you go out to photograph, have you studied everything already or do you let yourself be carried away by the moment? Both, if it is landscape photography, nature photography, like mushrooms, or another element that I find interesting, usually the only preparation is the equipment, which is more suitable for this purpose. When it comes to architecture, I especially like to know the work of other photographers, so that I can create something different from them. Or at least in processing to give the idea of something new and quite different. In these cases I always try to contact the entities that manage the elements to be photographed (for example buildings). In the case of conceptual photography, all or almost all of the works are almost like created in a small sketch in a notebook I've had for a few years. I prepare the general scheme of the image to be photographed, I study the colors, the ones that I like the most, the shapes, the symmetries, etc. In this way I can say that both ways of creating photographs occur to me, what I get at the moment and what I can prepare in advance.
