Promoting reading for young people: The READ ON Project way Best practices from a successful reading project. Conference & Course : 19 –22 October 2020 Conference: 19-20 October 2020 Course: 21-22 October 2020 Lisbon, Portugal Organization ID : E10136530

The READ ON course and conference aims to disseminate the READ ON project, its goals and the good practices/outcomes of the implementation of the project. We will also provide theoretical contents with regards to the promotion of literature and reading to young audiences. This can be done in many different ways. In this course the participants will be invited to take the role of the young readers, learn to use social media and other types of media in order to get their message across. There will also be time during the course for reflection and discussion.

Background It is true that reading is, and will always be, one of the main and most important skills that young people ought to master, especially in an increasingly digital and ever-changing society. There is a general feeling that being a teenager and enjoying reading are two differemt worlds. But there is a lot of evidence that young people do read a lot, especially when stimulated to do so. READ ON - Reading for Enjoyment, Achievement and Development of yOuNg people is a European project that aims to provide reading opportunities to a new generation of readers. The project attempts to support and disseminate passion for reading among European youth, mostly between the ages of 12 and 19, through directly and actively involving them in reforming the ways in which they live, share and create literature and reading experiences.

With the support of EACEA’s Creative Europe Program the READ ON (www.readon.eu) project is a four-year project (June 2017 - May 2021), has seven international partners, including schools, festivals, and cultural promotion centres. All of these focus especially on students and young people under 20 years of age: Haugaland videregående skole (Haugesund, Norway), Skudeneshavn Internasjonale Litteratur-og Kulturfestival (Skudeneshavn, Norway), Festivaletteratura (Mântua, Italy), Writing West Midlands (Birmingham, United Kingdom), Agrupamento de Escolas Carlos Gargaté (Almada, Portugal), Associació Tantàgora Serveis Culturals (Barcelona, Spain), and West Cork Music Ltd (Cork, Ireland). The very positive experience and outcomes of this successful project we want to share with the participants at this course and conference.

Objectives This conference & course has been created for teachers, heads of reading clubs/groups, librarians, directors, media specialists and other professionals who work in areas related to reading and who want to find out more about the variety of ways in which reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities can be planned, created, and administered to young audiences. Course participants will be exposed to the use of real texts and will acquire new skills in engaging learners in interactive activities that include input and output individually, in groups, teams and in plenary sessions. Conference & Course goals to: • inform others of the findings and experiences acquired throughout the READ ON project;

• explore, develop and evaluate ‘best practices’ with the collective participation of European teachers, trainers, principals and policymakers; • develop and improve learning processes with new ideas aimed at increasing students’ interest and motivation using stimulating materials from the real world; • encourage and motivate course participants to include the findings and learnings from their own practices, helping them build small groups and networks of cooperation in order to strengthen their future projects and activities concerning reading.

Target audience Teachers (primary, secondary, vocational, adult, special needs); Teacher trainers; Teacher/school librarians, librarians; media specialists, Reading mediators, writers, Head teachers/Principals; other stakeholders.
