Without impeachment and conviction, trump could continue to use the party platform to raise funds, intimidate leaders, spread new disinformation, inspire more conspiracies, work for re-election, demonize more law abiding public servants, connive with enemies of our country, and incite further rebellion and mayhem. the republican Party cannot be restored as a responsible actor in our society while the menace of the Trump cult remains, and the cult can only be excised by removing its head and the potential for pardon. the belated reaction of social media by banning trump’s access to their platform finally also recognizes the damage that his repeated lying has done to society. Many leading corporations have also withdrawn their support from trump and the republican Party because of their desire to avoid the taint of association. More still active republican leaders, such as Senators Toomey and Sasse, have also joined in to condemn trump’s role in the riot and express willingness to consider punishment. the explicit public recognition of trump’s responsibility for inciting the riot has risen rapidly from about six in ten Americans to at least three out of four and will rise further, especially among his former voters, when the full horrors of his actions are exposed. the problem now is that not enough republicans yet realize that trump needs to be removed from the body politic in order for the nation to heal and their party to recover its balance. too many republican leaders are again saying that Trump learned his lesson, as they did in response to his first impeachment. thus they oppose further action against him. Clearly, their fear of his continuing political influence impresses them more than their recognition that impeachment alone did not dissuade him from repeating the same type of phone call when he tried to twist the arm of the Secretary of State of Georgia “to find him 11,780 more votes.”

Perhaps we Americans also need to be reminded that the failure after the Civil War to debilitate the leadership of the Confederacy helps explain why some of the rioters waved Confederate flags as they invaded the Capitol, not to mention that it also enabled them to reinstitute the quasi slavery Jim Crow system for nearly another hundred years. the united states also needs to learn from the experience of other nations whose pretend democratic leaders have used their popular bases of support to transform their societies into autocracies and dictatorships. it can happen here, too. Trump’s obvious attraction to authoritarians such as Putin, Erdogan, Orbán, and Kim Jong-un show his true longing. We should recall Venezuela’s tragic story of the last thirty years. Hugo Chavez also organized a coup that failed and was convicted of sedition and imprisoned. However, his still loyal cultists argued that he had learned his lesson and won him a pardon that enabled him to return to politics. He then lead his populist movement back to political power, destroyed Venezuela’s democracy, transformed the richest country in Latin America into one of the poorest, and led over four million of its people to flee the tyranny he established.

Not surprisingly, foreign observers of the assault on our capitol and the gun-toting thugs who have been openly intimidating leaders in Michigan, Georgia, Wisconsin, and other states have begun comparing the united states to a banana republic. the Fbi has also warned us that right wing groups who were involved in organizing the Washington attack are now threatening violent action in state capitols across the country. the crucial preventive measures needed against such a continuing threat is to disenfranchise its leader, hold his chief enablers accountable, and punish the already concludes on page 26

La tardía reacción por las redes sociales de, finalmente, prohibir el acceso de Trump a sus plataformas también reconoce el daño que sus repetidas mentiras le han hecho a la sociedad. Muchas corporaciones líderes —buscando evitar mancha-por-asociación— también han retirado su apoyo a trump y al Partido republicano. Los líderes republicanos aún más activos, como los senadores Toomey y Sasse, también se han unido para condenar el papel de trump en el motín y expresar su disposición a considerar el castigo. Holy frijoles, Batman! What’s one to do with all these right wing radio messengers of pandemic fears via racial prejudice?

As a native Texan, proud of my state’s culinary contributions, I resent that a flu attack be tied to one of mankind’s most palatable meat dishes on a Tex-Mex menu, fajitas!

Neal Boortz, a Southerner and radio personality, has labeled this particular strand of flu, the “Fajita Flu”. Sr. Boortz, for your information, fajitas were born in the rio Grande Valley of Texas, not in Mexico.

Not to be outdone, CNN’s resident Hispanic-hater, Lou Dobbs*, has labeled the H1N1-Virus, the “Mexican Flu.”

That screaming West Coast dude, Savage, claims that all undocumented workers are nothing but H1N1-Virus carriers, therefore the borders must be closed. Of course, that’s one of his life’s ambitions.

He warns his faithful not to patronize bistros whose kitchen staff employs immigrants and instead visit eateries where no out- of- the- country dishwashers toil, Sure, Savage! All two of them? Let’s wish him luck when he goes to a supermarket in search of veggies and fruits harvested by “real Americans” this summer!

Then there are local or small market characters who echo their radio hosts hero’s speech.

And so it goes, day after day, instead of sending out important and intelligent information regarding the epidemic, they choose to spew more lies and misinformation about their favorite targets-people with spanish surnames.

This particular flu bug, it seems, has infected the brains of all these right-wingers who are still licking their post-presidential election ¡Frijoles Benditos, Batman! ¿Qué se puede hacer con todos estos difusores de miedos-de-pandemia que exacerban prejuicio racial a través de las ondas radiales de derecha?

Y luego están estos personajes de pequeños negocios o mercados locales que hacen eco al discurso del su héroe radial.

Y así se van, día tras día —en lugar de difundir información importante e inteligente sobre la epidemia, optan por diseminar más mentira y desinformación contra sus blancos favoritos: gente con apellido español.

Este virus particular de gripe, al parecer, ha infectado los cerebros de todos estos derechistas que todavía lamen sus heridas post-elección presidencial*. Junto con la desaparición del Partido republicano que ya conocíamos, su necesidad de encontrar a quién apalear en las continúa a la vuelta
