T

he first six months of the Biden administration has clarified the contest for the hearts and minds of the American people. Can his new government create a sufficient sense of national unity and increased popular cooperation to control the Pandemic, revive the economy, and put in place the national infrastructure needed for the struggle against climate change and for increasing social justice and broadening economic opportunity? Or, will the Republican hard liners succeed in escalating our culture war into more of the violent confrontations and attacks on democratic institutions that so many of their followers have already shown their willingness to launch in order to restore Trump to power?

Put in terms of our practical experience, what will be the better harbinger for what lies ahead for the U.S.? Will it be the January 6 attack on the Capitol, the relentless pursuit of voter suppression in red states, and the July spike in coronavirus infections to over 50,000 a day, or will it be our booming economy, the reduction of new infections to less than 10,000 a day we saw in June, and the July 4th celebration’s brief sense of community celebration and re-opening that we all want so much?

While at first glance the struggle in 2021 imitates the partisan polarization of the last two decades, a closer look shows important differences.

pattern of hate filled sectarianism recently identified in a path breaking study. Among the Democrats, on the other hand, not only the Biden administration, but the Democrats in Congress and at the state and local level across the country have reached out to build coalitions with independents, non-partisans, Republican defectors and maverick Republicans who are concerned to tackle the concrete issues facing the country.

Will America be better served by new alliances in support of the Democrats’ campaign to repair our infrastructure and use their majority to reduce injustice and broaden the access of more citizens to opportunities for health, education and work? Or, are the Republican crusades to reduce the access of minorities to the vote, to protect corporate tax breaks, to prevent the government from developing a clean energy economy, to protect the monuments of the Confederacy, and to invent myths and conspiracy theories about how the election was stolen better for our country?

This partisan divide is in the forefront of the everyday political struggle we face, but social scientists have also identified historic tendencies and deeply held values that are also at stake and evident in the political Gene Bigler, PhD strife that so worries us Writer & consultant now. Putnam on global affairs, and Shaylyn Romney former professor, Garrett have identified retired diplomat what they call the I-We-I pattern of values that is so clearly evident in the science-centered and Biden administration response to the COVID Pandemic. Taking and supporting collective actions, such as wearing masks, observing social distancing, and getting vaccinated, are all actions which emphasize cooperation, mutual sacrifice and willingness to devise and help us follow public health guidelines for protecting society and in turn to help keep us safe. These actions all reflect We values. Rejection of vaccination, refusal to wear masks, disregard for distancing, disparaging guidelines as impositions on personal liberty, and other rejections of public health guidance are actions that emphasize individual interests or I values.

In the broad course of American history, the policy actions associated with the We values of Progressivism and Liberalism have included the income tax and other progressive forms of taxation, universal suffrage rights regardless of gender or race, direct democracy, 4 Joaquín AUGUST 2021

consumer protection, labor rights and protections, conservation, publicly supported universal access to education and health care, social security and welfare safety nets, government regulation of the economy and trust busting, globalism, public financing for infrastructure and civil rights protection, affirmative action and other measures emphasizing mutuality and shared interests. Not surprisingly, historic periods in which these values have prevailed, such as the Civil War and Reconstruction, the Progressive era from the late 1890s to WWI, and the New Deal era from the Great Depression to the late 1960s, have all been characterized by relatively high economic equality, great upward mobility, broadened access to education, high voter turnout, and greater civic, cultural and trade union activism.

In contrast, the periods of prevalence of I values and individualism are more associated with conservatism, nationalism, nativism, big business dominance over the economy, slavery, Jim Crow, red lining, segregation, increasing economic inequality, declining educational performance, qualified voting rights, low voter turnout and little civic activism, and sharp economic declines, including most Depressions and sharp recessions. o, USA, time to toast your best pals this country has ever had!

Back in 1968, an actual working U.S. Congress and President LBJ, conceived the idea of allowing this country’s emerging Hispanic millions to be honored for one whole week. The mini-fiesta lasted 20 years. That’s when President Nixon gave the go-ahead for a month-long celebration. Thus, we can call this our 53rd anniversary, or LIII in Super Bowl speak.

But wait, our Spanish ancestors have been bettering this land (from SFO to Florida, at least) longer than it has been the illusive and overrated American Dream. Truth be told, our country’s history began on the very land we live and work, the West Coast and not with the eastern colonies. But if you ask any educated American when the history of the U.S. began, s/he will wrongly say, 1620, when the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

That is what is still being taught to your children. This is the mythic origin of our country. Besides having left an indelible mark on our great Southwest, these people introduced everything from ranch animals to architecture that is still in use today.

Actually, Hispanics have a legitimate right to celebrate their presence here since the 1500s. In celebration lingo, that’d be one extremely huge piñata party!

If it seems that we’re trying to compete with other national holidays, events, etc. we are not, we are merely adding to our country’s illustrious history.

It’s beyond hard to let our other American sisters and brothers know that Hispanics were the true pioneers that led America to a unique and worldwide respected culture.

En 1968, con un Congreso de los EEUU que realmente funcionaba, y el presidente LBJ, concibieron la idea de permitir que los millones de emergentes hispanos de este país fueran homenajeados durante una semana completa. Esa mini-fiesta duró 20 años. Fue entonces cuando el presidente Nixon dio luz verde a una celebración de todo un mes. Por lo tanto, podemos llamar a esto nuestro 53º aniversario, o LIII en dialecto de Super Bowl. ¡Pero espérense! Nuestros antepasados españoles han estado mejorando esta tierra (desde San Francisco hasta Florida, por lo menos) más tiempo de lo que ha sido el ilusorio y sobrevalorado Sueño Americano. stereotypical vision of Hispanics. Even Hispanics themselves have drank the kool aid and have viewed themselves in a warped manner for at least a couple of centuries. Hispanics, to many, come across as looking less than desirable as a neighbor. Or as a ‘normal’ American.

To add insult to injury, our loyalty to America the Beautiful is always in question.

During war years, the bicultural soldier is often called racist names usually applied along the Mexican border to the undocumented.

Bilingual, bicultural and bi-insulted?

Needless to say, we have much work to do as we attempt to undo some of the “cultural damage” hurled at Hispanics due to national ignorance, disrespect, oversight and downright meanness.

We must not beat ourselves up on account of this coast-to-coast disgrace. Misinformed as we Andy Porras are, we can change all this Sacramento, CA madness by practicing a new set of 3Rs: ResearchRespect-Rewrite. As a former educator and present day lecturer, I often face students and parents who are confused as I was upon my college graduation. Honestly, I tell them that I had to re-educate myself. It’s really a process within a process.

How, then, can we avoid another hollow National Hispanic Heritage Month? Perhaps greater recognition for La Raza can be ignited by addressing countless students in the upper grades and college level when the special

month rolls around. Taking a page from my own plática playbook, I encourage each one of you to contact Chicana/o instructors who are still preaching the “original gospel” about our gente. Allow them to give youngsters (and even some of you that need a Raza 101 remedial course) a taste of what the Movimiento was all about. Coupled with a few books by both Chicano and other writers on the topic can really set things in motion.

Understand that I’m not suggesting you relive the past, merely incorporate lo que paso with today’s approach and technology.

The worst thing that could happen during this special time is not doing anything about it. The powers that be have given us a stage, let’s jump on it and make a re-discovery scene for the benefit of our children.

Remember, a bilingual mind is twice as terrible to waste.

En realidad, los hispanos tienen el legítimo derecho de celebrar su presencia aquí desde el siglo XVI. En la jerga de la celebración ¡sería una gigantesca fiesta y con piñata!

Si le parece que estamos tratando de competir con otras fiestas nacionales, eventos, etc., no lo estamos, simplemente estamos aportando a la ilustre historia de nuestro país.

Es más que imposible hacer que nuestros hermanos y hermanas estadounidenses sepan que los hispanos fueron los verdaderos pioneros que llevaron a Estados Unidos a una cultura única y respetada en todo el mundo.

Durante demasiado tiempo, la mayoría de la

población anglosajona ha tenido una visión condicionada sobre los hispanos. Incluso los propios latinos han bebido de ese traguito y se han visto a sí mismos de una manera distorsionada durante, por lo menos, un par de siglos. Para muchos, los hispanos parecen ser vecinos que preferiríamos no tener. O, nunca, como estadounidenses “normales”.

Para colmo de males, nuestra lealtad a América la Bella, siempre está en tela de juicio.

Durante los años de guerra, al soldado bicultural a menudo se le llama con epítetos racistas que generalmente se aplican a lo largo de la frontera mexicana para los indocumentados. ¿Bilingüe, bicultural y bi-insultado?

Huelga decir que tenemos mucho trabajo por delante si queremos deshacer —por lo menos parte— del “daño cultural” que se le ha inculcado a los hispanos debido a la ignorancia, la falta de respeto, el control, y la franca crueldad de la etnia dominante.

No debemos sentirnos culpables por esta desgracia que nos abruma de costa a costa. Mal informados como estamos, podemos cambiar toda esta locura practicando un nuevo conjunto de 3-Rs: Rebuscar-Respetar-Reescribir.

Como ex-educador y actual conferencista, a menudo me enfrento a estudiantes y padres que están confundidos como yo lo estaba cuando me gradué de la universidad. Honestamente, les digo a ellos cómo tuve que reeducarme.

Realmente es un proceso dentro de un proceso.

Entonces ¿Cómo podemos evitar otro insustancial Mes Nacional del Legado Hispano? Quizás se pueda generar un mayor reconocimiento para La Raza —cuando llegue este mes tan especial—enfocándose en los innumerables estudiantes de grados superiores y nivel universitario. Tomando una página de mi propio manual de metodología oratoria, los motivo a comunicarse con los instructores chicano/as que todavía están predicando el “evangelio original” sobre nuestra gente.

Permítales que les den a los jóvenes (e incluso a algunos de ustedes que necesitan un curso de recuperación de Raza 101) una muestra de lo que fue El Movimiento. Y si le agregan algunos libros tanto de escritores chicanos como de otros escritores sobre el tema, pueden realmente echar esto a andar.

Aclaro que no estoy sugiriendo que se reviva el pasado, sino simplemente que se incorpore lo que pasó con el enfoque y la tecnología de hoy. Lo peor que podría pasar durante este momento especial es no hacer nada al respecto. La sociedad dominante nos ha dado un escenario, saltemos sobre este, y presentemos la escena del redescubrimiento en beneficio de nuestros hijos.

Recuerde, una mente bilingüe es dos veces más terrible de desperdiciar.

The Agrichemical Industry and the EPA

L

ately, the information leaking from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) furthers its criminality and that of its administrative staff — those 73 sycophants that Scott Pruitt installed to replace the 53 dedicated scientists that the agency let go. In that turnover, the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP) lost an additional 47 well-intentioned scientists.1 In its July 2, 2021 edition, The Intercept ran a report exposing the corruption at the EPA and its “broken” OCSPP which includes the Office of Pesticide Programs.

The article exposed internal emails and other documents that substantiated “a pattern” of removing and/or altering information about the toxicity of chemicals such as polyand-perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and glyphosate and their neurological effects, birth defects, and cancer.

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed requiring assessments or environmental impact statements recognizing potential harmful effects of chemicals. In 2011, the government conducted training seminars to instruct biotech firms such as Monsanto and Syngenta to conduct reviews of their own GE crops and allow these corporations to pay private contractors to prepare assessments on GE crops the government was considering deregulating; thus, eliminating governmental oversight in that part of the process.2 The Intercept concluded that, “Having companies fund and perform studies that affect them financially would seem to be an obvious conflict of interest, but that’s standard practice at EPA.”3 Let’s take a look at a 2015 “assessment” by the EPA of glyphosate as an endocrine disrup-

tor. The EPA’s report stated that there is “no convincing evidence” that glyphosate acts as an endocrine disruptor. The EPA’s evaluation used 32 studies to make a determination. Of those, 27 were conducted by the agrichemical industry and most of those were by Monsanto.

That is what the EPA’s endocrine disruption conclusion was based on! The EPA simply parroted what Monsanto wanted it to say. In spite of that, “many of the industry-funded studies contained data that suggested that exposure to glyphosate had serious effects.”4 In any case, most of those studies were more than two decades old and prior to the term, continued on next page “endocrine disrup-

En su edición del 2 de julio de 2021, The Intercept publicó un informe exponiendo la corrupción en la EPA y su “devastada” OCSPP —la que incluye la Oficina de Programas de Pesticidas. En el artículo, The Intercept expuso correos electrónicos internos y otros documentos que corroboraban “un patrón” de eliminación y/o alteración de información sobre la toxicidad de sustancias químicas —como las sustancias per-y-polifluoroalquilo (PFAS) y el glifosato y sus efectos neurológicos, defectos de nacimiento, y cáncer.

Cuando se aprobó la Ley Nacional de Política Ambiental (NEPA), esta dispuso evaluaciones o declaraciones de impacto ambiental que reconocieran los posibles efectos nocivos de productos químicos. En 2011, el gobierno llevó a cabo seminarios de capacitación para instruir a empresas de biotecnología como Monsanto y Syngenta para que realizasen revisiones de sus propios cultivos transgénicos —permitiendo a estas corporaciones que pagaran contratistas privados para preparar evaluaciones de sus cultivos transgénicos— que el gobierno estaba considerando desrecontinúa a la vuelta gular, eliminando así AUGUST 2021 Joaquín 7

tion.” Lastly, of the five independent studies, three of them found evidence of “danger to the endocrine system.”

The influence of the agrichemical industry is pervasive and diabolical. In March of 2020, President Trump nominated a toxicologist from the EPA’s OCSPP to head the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, another agency charged with making sure products are free from dangerous chemicals and the hazards of those chemicals. This nominee, Nancy Beck, had been a lobbyist for the American Chemistry Council prior to her appointment at the EPA. During her appointment in the EPA, she was instrumental in “watering-down” regulations overseeing PFAS. According to government documents obtained by Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, it was Beck who was “the driving force” behind a White House attempt to weaken the regulations concerning PFAS. Phased out of U.S. production, regulations have been imposed restricting unhindered importation of certain PFAS. Those documents have revealed Beck “carved out” a special loophole or “safe harbor” provision favoring PFAS importers easing restrictions on these dangerous “forever chemicals.”5&6 Produced since the 1940s, there are around 5,000 PFAS, less than half researched in peerreviewed journals and articles. PFAS are found in food packaging, tap water and ground water, firefighting foam, non-stick pans (Teflon), water-proof clothing (Scotchgard), cosmetics, grease, stains, etc.7 Further documentation obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by Physicians for Social Responsibility revealed that Chevron and Exxon Mobil “used per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) or substances that can degrade into them for fracking.”6 Even safe PFAS are no longer “safe.” For instance, perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) has been considered a relatively harmless chemical because of its shorter four-carbon chain and its short duration in the body before being expelled. But, while in the body, it accumulates in the lungs “where the big COVID battle is fought.” Furthermore, PFBA “causes changes in the liver and thyroid.”7 In other words, more severe forms of Covid 19 are associated with elevated levels of PFBA. While the Biden administration has made PFAS a “top priority,” his administration appears to be no different having chosen an ex-DuPont official, Michael McCabe, for his transition team to review the Chemistry Safety Board. Still, the EPA under Biden’s administration has removed the PFBS (perfluorobutanesulfonic acid) assessment due to “con8 Joaquín AUGUST 2021

clusions purporting to reflect science when in fact they were the product of biased political interference directed in part by OSCPP’s past political leadership.”8 We’ll just have to wait and see.

EPA: El Enemigo Infiltrado viene de la vuelta

la supervisión gubernamental en esta parte del proceso2. The Intercept questionó el que “las mismas empresas resultarían afectadas financiaran y realizaran esos estudios, obviamente presentaba un conflicto de intereses pero... esa es una práctica estándar en la EPA”3.

Demos un vistazo a una “evaluación” de la EPA en 2015 sobre el glifosato como disruptor endocrino. El informe de la EPA indicó que “no hay evidencia convincente” de que el glifosato actúe como un disruptor endocrino.

La evaluación de la EPA se basó en 32 estudios para tomar esa determinación. De éstos, 27 fueron realizados por la industria agroquímica y la mayoría de ellos por Monsanto. ¡En éso se basó la conclusión de la EPA sobre la alteración endocrina! la EPA simplemente repitió lo que Monsanto quería que dijera. A pesar de esto último, “muchos de los estudios financiados por la industria contenían datos que sugerían que la exposición al glifosato tenía graves efectos”4.

eliminadas de producirse en los EEUU y se han implementado regulaciones que restringen la libre importación de ciertas PFAS. Pero estos documentos revelan que Beck “forjó” resquicios legales o “excepciones” favorables a los importadores de PFAS —reduciendo las restricciones sobre estos peligrosos “y productos químicos de efecto perenne”5y6 Producidos desde la década de los 1940s, hay alrededor de 5 mil PFAS —y menos de la mitad han sido analizados expertos en artículos o revistas científicas. Los PFAS se encuentran en envases de alimentos, agua de grifo y aguas subterráneas, en espuma controla-incendios, sartenes antiadherentes (Teflón), ropa impermeable (Scotchgard), cosméticos, grasas, tintes, etc.7 Documentación adicional obtenida a través de la Ley de Libertad de Información por parte de Médicos por la Responsabilidad Social reveló que Chevron y Exxon Mobil “usaban sustancias per-y-polifluoroalquilo (PFAS) u otras que se pueden degradarse como tales para uso en la explotación petrolera por fracturación hidráulica (fracking)”6.

Incluso los PFAS seguros ya no son “seguros”. Por ejemplo, el ácido perfluorobutanoico (PFBA) se ha considerado una sustancia química relativamente inofensiva debido a su fugaz cadena de cuatro carbonos y su corta duración antes de ser expulsado del cuerpo.

Si bien la Administración Biden ha puesto el control de PFAS como “máxima prioridad”, su Administración no pareciera ser diferente —habiendo nombrado a un ex funcionario de DuPont, Michael McCabe, para que su equipo de transición investigue el Directorio de Seguridad Química. Aunque, por lo menos, la EPA bajo la Administración Biden ha eliminado la evaluación del PFBS (ácido perfluorobutanosulfónico) debido a “conclusiones que pretenden reflejar ciencia cuando en realidad fueron el producto de una interferencia política sesgada dirigida en parte por el liderazgo político anterior de OSCPP”8.

henever I turned on the TV to watch the news, my mom would say “Se Está Acabando el Mundo.” She hated watching the news because it was —as she said— all about murders, killings, war, and tragedies.

She would quip when I told her the world would end soon because it said so in the Bible, “Yeah, it will when you’re dead” and laugh.

I f irst heard about the end of the world when I heard Protestant preachers like Billy Graham talk about Doomsday, the Second Coming and the Book of Revelation or the Apocalypse. The references to earthquakes, war, worldwide famine, false prophets, the Antichrist, nations rising against nations and the moon turning to blood scared the hell out of me. You never heard this stuff in the Catholic Church in those days. Se Está Acabando el Mundo.

It all sounded so immediate, like it was ready to happen today or even tomorrow. Later I found that the early Christians, over 2000 years ago also believed it was going to happen in their lifetime and the Christ’s words “This generation shall not pass until these things be fulfilled, (Matthew 24:34)”, must have scared them too. That’s pretty darned immediate.

History then is replete false prophets predicting the day and time of the end of the world.

S iempre que prendía la televisión para ver las noticias, mi mamá decía “Se Está Acabando el Mundo”. Odiaba ver las noticias porque era —como decía ella— puros asesinatos, matanzas, guerras y tragedias.

Cuando yo le comentaba que de todos modos el mundo ter minaría pronto porque

Un tal Harold Camping lo predijo recientemente un total de doce veces y cada vez se equivocó. Al parecer Dios cambia de opinión constantemente. Otro signo del fin de los tiempos fue la Primera Guerra Mundial: la guerra para poner fin a todas las guerras. Luego estaba Hitler y el Papa, cada uno considerado como el Anticristo. But the phrase Se Está Acabando el Mundo just might be more true today in the 21st century with Global Warming, rising sea levels, the melting of glaciers, Ice sheets the size of New York falling into the sea, the advent of larger and more prevalent hurricanes, the destruction of rain forests, worldwide droughts the massive wildfires leveling our forests, cities an homes and our once blue skies now choking with smoke, oppressively hot summers, pandemics, the depletion of the Ozone the stubborn unwillingness to divorce ourselves from fossil fuels, and the pollution of our rivers and oceans. I mean, damn, how many more signs do we need?! The sky is falling.

The streets and underpasses of our cities are now home to the ever growing masses of the homeless. Cardboard shelters are replaced with tents from Walmart.

We pass them without a thought as we huddle in our air-conditioned and heated cars. We fight one another over whether to wear a mask or get a vaccine that Richard Ríos can protect us against a Stockton, CA cunning viral enemy. Science is vilified. But we have “rights”. The right to be stupid, even. Se Está Acabando el Mundo.

Our lakes, rivers and reservoirs are drying up and we worry about where we are going to launch our boats. I worry more about what it would be like opening the faucet without a drop of water to drink, cook or bathe in. Se Está Acabando el Mundo.

Then there’s the crisis at our borders, fenced cubicles stuffed with hundreds of little brown children, desperate for a place to call home, and the thousands of our southern neighbors amassed there who’d be content with even the scraps from our tables of plenty.

The hatred against them swells and a nation of immigrants now despises immigrants. Se Está Acabando el Mundo.

And in far off places people desperately

cling to the wings and wheels of departing planes risking death just to escape the tyranny of their oppressors. Human rights trod under.

I recall a scrawny old guy, “Brother Jim” who paced up and down 10th Street in Modesto when I was a kid carrying a cardboard sign reading “Must Brother Jim carry the Cross alone?”

But nobody ever paid any attention to him. I’m afraid so, Jim. In fact, most people pay little attention to these things and worry more about what is directly in front of them.

But it can’t go on this way forever. It just can’t.

Scientists and Environmentalists tell us it doesn’t have to be this way. The end is not inevitable. God can change His mind. Man can change his mind. We can end Carbon pollution and Greenhouse gasses if we have the will to do it. We can start caring about our brother.

But don’t bet on it. When ignorance and stupidity abounds what chance do we have?

The optimist in me is taxed. But wait, not all is dark and gloom. There is a tiny ray of hope and we can at least defer the End Time for a few more billion years when according to Science our sun will completely burn itself out bringing an end to life as we know it. O sea ¡qué diantres! ¿Cuántas señales más necesitamos? El cielo se nos viene encima.

Las calles y los pasos subterráneos de nuestras ciudades son ahora el hogar de crecientes masas de indigentes sin techo. Los refugios de cartón se reemplazan por carpas

de Walmart. Pasamos junto a ellos sin pensarlo mientras nos acurrucamos en nuestros autos con aire acondicionado y calefacción. Nos peleamos entre nosotros sobre si debemos usar una mascarilla o recibir una vacuna que pueda protegernos contra un pernicioso enemigo viral. Se vilipendia la ciencia. Pero tenemos “derechos”. Incluso el derecho a ser estúpido.

Se Está Acabando el Mundo.

Nuestros lagos, ríos y embalses se están secando y nosotros preocupados de por dónde vamos a echar nuestras lanchas al agua. A mí me preocupa más cómo sería abrir el grifo sin una gota de agua para beber, cocinar o bañarme. Se Está Acabando el Mundo.

Luego está la crisis en nuestras fronteras, cubículos enrejados llenos de cientos de pequeños niños morenos, desesperados por un lugar al que llamar hogar, y los miles de nuestros vecinos del sur reunidos allí que se contentarían incluso con las sobras de nuestras mesas de abundancia. El odio contra ellos crece y una nación de inmigrantes ahora desprecia a los inmigrantes. Se Está Acabando el Mundo.

Y en lugares lejanos, la gente se aferra desesperadamente a las alas o las ruedas de los aviones que despegan, arriesgando la vida solo para escapar de la tiranía de sus opresores.

Los derechos humanos se pisotean.

Recuerdo a un escuálido viejillo, el “Hermano Jim”, que caminaba de un lado a otro por la Calle 10 en Modesto cuando yo era niño, levantando una pancarta que rezaba “¿Debe el Hermano Jim cargar la Cruz él solo?”

Pero nadie le prestaba atención. Me temo que sí, Jim. De hecho, la mayoría de las personas prestan poca atención a esas cosas y se preocupan más por lo que está directamente frente a ellas. Pero no puede seguir así para siempre. Simplemente no puede.

Los científicos y ambientalistas nos dicen que no tiene por qué ser así. El final no es inevitable. Dios puede cambiar de opinión. El hombre puede cambiar de opinión. Podemos acabar con la contaminación por carbono y los gases de efecto-invernadero si tenemos la voluntad de hacerlo. Podemos empezar a preocuparnos por nuestro hermano. Aunque eso parece bastante difícil… cuando abunda la ignorancia y la estupidez ¿Cuáles son las probabilidades?

El optimista en mí está agotado. Pero ¡un momento! no todo es oscuridad y desesperanza: hay un débil rayo de esperanza y podemos —como mínimo— aplazar el El Fin por algunos miles de millones de años más cuando, según la Ciencia, nuestro sol se quemará por completo y pondrá fin a la vida tal como la conocemos. ¡Eso si andamos con suerte!

Asalto Derechista a la Educación:

Batalla por la Mente y Alma de los Niños

L

as legislaturas estatales controladas por los republicanos se han embarcado en una vertiginosa carrera, redactando y aprobando leyes que prohíben mencionar la historia del racismo en Estados Unidos en las escuelas. La Teoría Crítica de la Raza (CRT) es su principal blanco, pero cualquier plan de estudios que intente abordar el impacto y los efectos del racismo, es objeto de escrutinio y ataque. Los ideólogos de derecha han convencido a los “republicanos trumpistas” —y a un importante número de padres euroamericanos conservadores— que sus hijos están siendo adoctrinados con una ideología marxista e izquierdista en las escuelas públicas.

De igual manera, hay padres en Pensilvania que están demandando al distrito escolar local, alegando que cuestionar el racismo sistemático, el privilegio euroamericano, o porqué existe el movimiento Black Lives Matter, etc., es anticristiano y, por lo tanto, discriminan contra su religión y constituyen una violación de sus derechos civiles.

Algunos padres-activistas de raza blanca se quejan que sus hijos ahora están hablando de racismo —y se preguntan si ellos son o no racistas. Afirman que esto ha venido de las escuelas. Sin embargo, los educadores argumentan que el racismo se convirtió en discurso nacional en las escuelas debido a las consecuencias tras la muerte de George Floyd. Los maestros buscaron maneras de ayudar a que los estudiantes comprendieran el malestar social que se desarrollaba frente a sus ojos —tanto en la televisión como en las calles de sus ciudades.

“Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness” de Anastasia Higginbotham. Ambas autoras son mujeres, son blancas, y podrían calificarse de activistas antirracismo.

DiAngelo —quien nació y creció en San José, California, y obtuvo su doctorado en la Universidad de Washington— es la más controversial. Asesora en diversidad durante los últimos 20 años, fue objeto de violentas reacciones por declaraciones vertidas en una sesión virtual en ese tema, donde afirmó: “(…) ser menos blanco es: ser menos opresivo, menos arrogante, menos intransigente, menos defensivo, menos ignorante, más humilde”.

El extremista de derecha, Tucker Carlson, ha utilizado el libro de DiAngelo como base para su afirmación de que “antirracismo” significa literalmente “anti-blancos”. Según DiAngelo, su libro fue diseñado para abordar: “los movimientos defensivos que hacen los blancos cuando se les desafía racialmente; y la fragilidad blanca se caracteriza por emociones Ed Ramírez como la ira, el miedo y Linden, CA sentido de culpabilidad —y por comportamientos que incluyen la argumentación y el silencio”.

Right-Wing Assault on Education:

Battle for the Hearts and Minds of Children

R

epublican-controlled state legislatures have gone on a rampage drafting and approving laws that ban teaching about the history of racism in America. Critical Race Theory (CRT) is the primary target, but any curriculum that attempts to address the impact and effects of racism have come under scrutiny and attack. Right-wing ideologues have convinced “Trump Republicans” and a significant number of conservative white parents that their children are being indoctrinated with left-wing and Marxist ideology in public schools.

Similarly, parents in Pennsylvania are suing the local school district claiming topics that question systemic racism, the white privilege, why Black Lives Matter exists, etc., are anti-Christian, and therefore, discriminate against their religion and constitute a violation of their civil rights.

Some white parent activists complain that their children are now talking about racism and questioning whether or not they are racist. They claim that this has come from the schools. However, educators argue, that racism

became a current issue in schools because of the fall-out after the death of George Floyd.

Teachers struggled to help students make sense of the social unrest that was playing out in front of their eyes on TV and on American streets.

Regarding CRT in the schools, “most teachers don’t use the term when discussing racism and don’t require students to read the work of scholars who use that framework.”

Books that have become targets as surrogates for CRT include: “White Fragility,” a New York Times bestseller, by Robin DiAngelo, and a children’s book “Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness” by Anastasia Higginbotham. Both authors are white women who could be characterized as anti-racist activists.

DiAngelo, born and raised in San Jose, California earned a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, is the most controversial.

A diversity trainer for the last 20 years, she was subject to a backlash for statements in a webinar training session where she stated, “To be less white is to: be less oppressive, less arrogant, less certain, less defensive, less ignorant, more humble.” Rightwing extremist Tucker Carl-

Higginbotham, an author, artist, activist and mother, is “a speechwriter for social justice organizations and teaches self-defense through Prepare Inc.” which “offers comprehensive violence prevention training and personal safety programs.” She created the Ordinary Terrible Things children’s book series which includes: Divorce Is the Worst; Death Is Stupid; Tell Me About Sex, Grandma; and, Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness.

The latter is a “children’s picture book that roots the problem of racism in whiteness and empowers white children and families to see and dismantle white supremacy.” It revolves around a story of a white police officer shooting a brown person whose hands were up.

Right-wing ideologues have portrayed it as “anti-white racism.”

These books written by white authors for a white audience were designed to combat systemic racism and promote the civil rights of people of color. However, they have been reduced to pawns in the right-wing extremist so-called culture wars and subsumed under the “catchall” heading of CRT. At least 21 states with Republican controlled legislatures have introduced bills that would restrict teaching CRT, The New York Times’ 1619 Project and anti-racism curriculum in general. among other things, that white kids are being taught to see themselves as oppressors, are taught to hate being white, and are taught to hate America.

Maybe the starkest example of the current assault on education can be seen in Florida where Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation that claims to crackdown on intellectual “indoctrination.” He alleges, that higher education institutions in the U.S. have become repressive environments in which different viewpoints are suppressed, and he argues, that “a new civics and ‘patriotism’ education is required in K-12... that teaches the evils of communist and totalitarian governments.”

While, on the one hand, DeSantis took credit for leading the movement to ban CRT and The New York Times’ 1619 Project from Florida public schools, on the other hand, he advocated for and signed legislation demanding that students are exposed to diverse beliefs and ideas, even if it makes them feel uncomfortable. DeSantis’ initiatives are incongruent and even contradictory, and in the final analysis, they are purely political and not relevant to teaching, learning or civics education.

In Texas, another state at the forefront of the right-wing anti-CRT campaign, legislators are proposing a law to eliminate Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez and the Civil Rights Movement from public school curriculum.

Scholars and educators across the country have objected to this political intrusion into the classroom. More than six dozen scholarly and educational groups (e.g., American Historical Association, the American Association of University Professors, the American Federation of Teachers, etc.) signed onto a statement objecting to legislation limiting discussions of race, racism and related topics asserting such restrictions present a “threat to civic life.” They argue, “Educators must provide an accurate view of the past to better prepare students for community participation and robust civic engagement.”

Pay-to-Play ‘Paga-y-Juega’ and other y otros Sports Deportes

l desmoronam iento psicológico de Estados Unidos y se nos dice que los Juegos Olímpicos reflejan los valores de nuestra nación y que los deportistas Olímpicos nos representan, lo cual es completamente falso.

Si bien la hipocresía es la marca registrada de Estados Unidos, desde la democracia hasta la oportunidad, ¿no es hora de que dejemos de fingir estar de acuerdo y llamar a los Juegos Olímpicos lo que son? —Llamémoslos los Juegos Privilegiados de los Blancos de Estados Unidos o los “Juegos del Hambre” de Estados Unidos. Según las estadísticas del informe “Ingresos y pobreza en los Estados Unidos: 2019” del censo de EEUU, menos del 40% de los ciudadanos hispanos gana más de $50,000 al año y hay millones de personas sin hogar... por lo que los Juegos Olímpicos están diseñados para los ricos.

Como ex aspirante a los Juegos Olímpicos, digo que afirmar que los atletas olímpicos nos representan es ridículo. he psychological unraveling of America continues as our so-called leaders gaslight the country. We are told the Olympics reflect our nation’s values and Olympians represent us which is completely untrue.

While hypocrisy is America’s trademark —from democracy to opportunity— isn’t it time we stop pretending to agree and call the Olympics what they are? —let’s call them America’s White Privileged Games or America’s “Hunger Games”. According to statistics from the U.S. Census report “Income and Poverty in the United States: 2019”, less than 40% of Hispanic citizens makes more than $50,000 a year and there are millions of homeless… so the Olympics are designed for Selleck. As a former Olympic hopef u l, I say claiming Olympians represent us is ridiculous. These are rich privileged children who train as a hobby or fun and prestige. There is nothing meritorious about winning a contest only the privileged can afford to play. It is the pinnacle of hypocrisy to claim they represent America, but their class.

This assertion that money can afford you the access to the title of “Olympian athlete” can be seen in the 2021 Olympics. There is Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Katie Diana, daughter of billionaire Jamie Diana; Ekaterina Rybolovleva, daughter of Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovleva; Jessica Springsteen, daughter of Bruce Springsteen; Charlotte, Casiraghi and Athina Onassis Roussel, granddaughters of billionaire Aristotle Onassis and, of course, the ultimate TV cop Tom Selleck’s daughter, Hanna Selleck. There are many more.

Winning Olympic gold is one of many dreams misappropriated by unfair, skewed methods of selection and participation based upon who can afford it. Olympians and coaches are not selected on character or any other aspect of quality. It’s done on who they are, who their trainers are, attending competitions, influencing judges and as proven in admissions’ scandals (i.e. the ongoing Operation Varsity Blues), via financial or political connections.

Another rarely addressed issue in selection is racism but, ultimately, it is a question of affordability. Yes, we are as free as we can afford. The price of training for the Olympics is astronomical —see below…

Who amongst those living in my Texas barrio is free to pay $140-$270 a month for beginning gymnastics? Who is free to pay $35,000-$50,000 a year for skate training, travel expenses, housing etc.? The same is true for Archery, continued on next page AUGUST 2021 Joaquín 19

with a cost of $25,000 a year; Table Tennis is $20,000; Fencing is $20,000 and it goes on to the perfect example of privilege upon which our nation has become… or was founded upon?

The ultimate example of how so-called athletes don’t represent us are those dubbed “equestrian champions”. This “sport” is removed from the average person and those who practice it were born to wealth, privilege and segregated by heritage. The average horse costs anywhere from $102k to $142k. Fees, training and travel reaches into the millions.

Only the wives and children of the richest enjoy the “Sport of Kings”.

So the next time someone mentions the Olympics, think not only of billionaires wasting money flying in space and remember to say, “Happy Hunger Games”. Yes, the 2008 -2020 film trilogy is a fictional recreation of the future; whereas, sadly, the Olympics are a fictional recreation of our present. La muestra definitiva de cómo los llamados atletas no nos representan son los denominados “campeones ecuestres”. Este “deporte” está totalmente lejos del ciudadano promedio, quienes lo practican nacieron con riquezas, privilegios y segregados por herencia. Su juguete ecuestre promedio cuesta entre $ 102k y $ 142k. Las cuotas, la capacitación y los traslados ascienden a los millones. Solo las esposas e hijos de los más ricos disfrutan del denominado “Deporte de Reyes”.

Entonces, la próxima vez que alguien mencione los Juegos Olímpicos, piense no solo en los multimillonarios que desperdician dinero volando al espacio y recuerde decir, “Felices Juegos del Hambre”. o one remembers the town’s name.

Scores of similar hamlets and villages dotted the Sierra Madre and the story about the drunkard father went from ear to ear, cantina to cantina, until both the man’s name as well as the town he lived in became so blurred no one was sure anymore.

Therefore, we will play it safe and call him Jose.

Jose was no different than most of his townsfolk. He owned a donkey and small plot where he built his hut, and where he also planted beans, corn, tomatoes, or whatever he could, providing some for food his family, selling the remnants for a meager profit, given than most of his neighbors produced the same things.

He worked hard, earned little, and —like his father and grandfather before him— saw no end to this life, and vented his frustration getting drunk and treating his wife like trash, and his child as a burden.

His wife, like most womenfolk in these parts, took it as a

Así que, para no complicarnos, aquí lo llamaremos simplemente José.

José no era diferente a la mayoría de sus vecinos. Como ellos, poseía un asno y un pedacito de tierra donde levantó su jacal, y donde también sembró frijoles, maíz, tomates o lo que se pudiera, aprovechando lo suficiente para alimentar a su familia, y vendiendo lo fact of life, and endured it as best she could.

Trabajaba como burro, ganaba poco y —como su padre y su abuelo antes que él— no veía fin a esta, su vida, y desahogaba su frustración emborrachándose, maltratando a su mujer, y viendo a su hijo como un estorbo.

Su esposa, como la mayoría de las mujeres por estos lugares, lo tomaba como ley de vida y lo soportaba lo mejor que podía.

Habían pasado varios inviernos cuando contrajo un resfrío que no se le iba. Azuzado por sus familiares y amigos, José se convenció de que su esposa se había vuelto perezosa y se hacía la enferma para no servirlo como le correspondía. Eso le sirvió como justificación para quedarse fuera de casa más y más tarde, y beber más y más.

Una noche, ya casi al alba, regresó — borracho como de costumbre. Exigió a su esposa que se levantara y le diera algo de comer. Su esposa no le respondió, ni siquiera fingía toser como lo hacía últimamente. José se enfureció y estaba a punto de golpearla cuando —en la penumbra— se dio cuenta de que su pequeño hijo estaba abrazando su cuerpo ya rígido.

Esto marcó el comienzo de una muy, muy larga pesadilla. Cuando vestían a su mujer para el funeral vio y se dio cuenta de lo delgada que se había puesto, y los visibles moretones azules y negros que acusaban la crueldad con la que la había tratado. Ella nunca protestó y solo lloraba —recibiendo en su cuerpo los golpes del borracho para así proteger a su pequeño apretado en su seno.

Desde ese entonces, siempre que no estaba ebrio, lo atormentaba el remordimiento. Así fue que se convirtió en el borracho del pueblo.

a cough like she did as of late. He became very angry and was about to hit her when —in the dim light— realized his young son was embracing her already lifeless, stiffened body.

This marked the beginning of a long, long nightmare. As he saw his wife being dressed for her funeral, he realized how skinny she had become, and the visible blue and black bruises accused him of being so cruel to her, who never protested and only cried receiving his drunken blows to protect their little son in her bosom.

From then and on, whenever he was not drunk, remorse tormented him. So he became the town’s drunkard. He would drink at the tavern, but also drank at home, as soon as his son went Roberto to bed. In short time he Radrigán started having delirious Stockton, CA bouts. He saw his naked, bruised wife, looking at him with infinite sad eyes and he would fall on his knees begging for her forgiveness. Sometimes he kept long one-way conversations with her, telling her how much he had changed and how he would do things differently if she was to come back to him.

His son was already eight and before long became aware of his father’s nightly monologues. One night he spied him and, watching him speaking to an empty chair, became scared. He thought he had gone mad.

Frightened, he asked: “Father, why are you talking alone, who are you talking to?” His father, drunk and angry, pointed at his vision and yelled, “at your mother, don’t you see her?!” “No! But I want to see her, I want to talk to her too! Where is she?!” He demanded.

“She’s right there, how come you can’t see her!

Are you blind?!” Jose said, forcefully. But his son could only see the empty chair.

Many more nights went by and Jose’s son would spy the empty room as soon as he heard his father’s monologue.

Then one evening, José got home after spending time at the cantina, and saw his little son spread over the dirt floor, hugging the coarse rug he used as a bed, laughing foolishly. The man scanned the room and saw his tequila bottle laying on the table, empty.

“Pinche Escuintle! You fool!” He screamed in rage! Looking for a stick or something to punish him with.

As he saw the figure of the man armed with the fire iron, the child screamed in terror: “No Daddy! No daddy, please, don’t hit me! I just wanted to see mom once more, like you do every night!”

Pasaron muchas noches iguales y el hijo de José espiaba la habitación en cuanto escuchaba el monólogo de su padre.

Hasta que una noche José llegó a su casa después de pasar horas en la cantina, y vio a su pequeño hijo tirado en el piso de tierra, abrazado el petate que le servía de cama, riendo como tonto. El hombre escudriñó la habitación y vio su botella de tequila volcada sobre la mesa, vacía. “¡Pinche escuincle! ¡Pendejo!”

Gritaba enfurecido, buscando un palo o algo para castigarlo.

Al ver la figura del hombre armado con el atizador del fogón, el niño gritó de terror: “¡No papá! ¡No papito, por favor, no me pegues! ¡Solo quería ver a mamá una vez más, como tú lo haces todas las noches!”

Friday, June 24 London, England orning came a n d I wa s s o h a p p y.

I thought, soon we will land. We finally arrived at the Heathrow Airport in London, England. We had nothing to declare so we walked through customs without our backpacks being inspected. Our American friend Karen Pietro was waiting for us and she waved enthusiastically at us. Yes, I arrived with swollen ankles and legs. This really freaked Karen out. She went out the next day and bought support nylons for my trip back and a pair for herself.

She did not want to have big legs and ankles.

I swear they looked like Golda Meir’s ankles.

When we got to Karen’s house, I didn’t rest. I was too wired. I think Matli took a nap.

I was so wired that when it was time to sleep that evening, I couldn’t. I tossed and turned all night long and before I knew it, it was morning. Well, how can that be? I thought. I know I wasn’t up that long! Well, in England it gets light early in June; try 2:30 am or 3 am. Their day is longer than ours in California. I finally fell asleep around 7 am and got up around 10-ish. Of course Matli slept the entire night.

Saturday, June 25 Upon rising, Karen, her son Chris, Matli and I walked to the farmer’s market, which was two blocks away. It was a small upscale town. It reminded me of the 60’s when mod art and the Beatles were the “in thing”; a very colorful place. I like how the English speak. I had no problem understanding them. Matli said he had trouble understanding the British. See, Matli is bilingual, and I think that contributes to his confusion. Me, on the other hand, am not bilingual, so my brain is like a clean slate, nothing in my head to confuse me. At the market, we sampled cheeses, breads, and other homemade food.

I ate a piece of fudge that was made with goat’s milk and I began to “baaaa” like a goat in front of the vendor. He looked at me with big eyes and let out a laugh, which I think surprised Karen, because she continued on next page thought he might have been offended. I

could tell Karen was a little bit embarrassed.

She is quite a gal and very proper, so to speak. Me on the other hand, I say whatever comes to mind, like a kid. To Karen’s dismay, I made a lot of vendors laugh. I remember one vendor selling vegetarian potato chips, which were seasoned differently: salt and vinegar, regular and pork seasoning. Karen asked the vendor how the pork seasoning chips could be vegetarian. The vendor began to explain and I interjected “It is simple…potatoes are vegetables.” That made both the vendor and her husband laugh and again Karen was surprised

by Brit’s laughter. You see, Karen told me that the English are very proper and hate Southern accents. Well, I am not proper and besides, I sometimes have a Southern drawl.

We all returned to Karen’s apartment for breakfast. She pays $4500 a month for rent (or should I say because she works at a US military base, they pay her rent.) Chris helped Matli find a hotel in London on the Internet, after which Karen drove us to the Windsor Castle, a beautiful castle with green and lush grounds. That was a fun trip. The Queen resides there during certain times of the year. I asked a guard if the Queen was in and he pointed to the tower where a flag was waving softly in the wind. The flag indicated that yes, the Sonya Fe Queen was there.

God, he was a wide man! All the other suits of armor were so puny by comparison. I saw Holblien, Albert Durer, and Da Vinci drawings. I enjoyed being in that castle; it reminded me of my favorite holiday, Halloween. We saw the Changing of the Guards and took a few pictures with one of the guards. I really felt at home taking pictures with a Black castle guard.

In the evenings at Karen’s house we played Sequence, a board game. We drank a lot of wine and beer late into the night. We mostly reminisced about our times together in the States, How things had changed since she moved to London! but what we really did for hours was good ole fashioned bullshitting.

Sunday, June 26 Karen drove Matli and me to the train station so that we can begin our adventure in London. In the same train car, a group of British youth was sharing a six-pack of Corona beer. At a stop before London, they got off the 24 Joaquín AUGUST 2021

train and they left behind a paper bag with empty beer bottles. The ticket we bought was good only for one stop. We didn’t know this and continued to ride the entire route for free.

Well there we were in London looking for our hotel. Matli had experience finding hotels, charting train schedules, figuring out bus routes and maneuvering by metro transportation and subways. We had reservations at the Grisham (one of Matli’s favorite writers) Hotel on Russell Street. The British Museum was right around the corner.

We arrived early at the hotel, about 10 am.

We were told that our room wouldn’t be ready until 2 pm, so we walked to the British Museum, and sat on the lawn to eat lunch. A large banner informed the crowd that African music would be featured for the next three days.

There on the stage were African musicians playing and singing with a lot of movement and enthusiasm. They were very entertaining and quite nice. People flocked around the stage to enjoy the music, and I enjoyed watching the people, too! We learned that the entrance to the museum was free, and since we were coming back tomorrow to spend all day there and since we had time to kill, we entered and took a quick walk through it.

As we were leaving, I heard African drums and music coming from a glassed-in display area in the hallway. An African group was performing. I was so excited I wanted to dance with them. One of the dancers went into the crowd, and grabbed reluctant bystanders “Oh, please pick me,” I kept saying to myself. Well, he must have heard me or seen the excited look on my face. He chose me by extending his hand to me; it’s a good thing, too, because you couldn’t have held me back anyway. I danced and danced to those drums, looking back every now and then to see Matli’s expression. He was smiling and laughing. I was in my glory.

Later, Matli sent emails to friends and relatives joking that the African dancers wanted to take me on tour with them. After being cooped up in hotel rooms, trains, and planes, I felt free to dance with the same excitement as the drums; it was so exhilarating. My feet were stepping fast, staying up with the drums. My butt moved to the music all by itself. I think that was what Matli was smiling about, seeing my butt move to the rhythm of the drums.

When our room was ready, it was time to go. Our hotel looked like a bomb shelter. The room was very small with two toilets and two showers down the hallway. So you guessed it, we shared these accommodations with many other guests. And like at home, I am always changing or replacing the toilet paper. Even on vacation, I am stuck doing this. We had one

small sink in our room where I washed our undies and socks. I am telling you: women just can’t escape housework. This little dark hotel room cost us 232 pounds ($120 per day) for five days, breakfast included. The hotel room was worse than any Motel 6 room we ever stayed in. The breakfast was the same every day: coffee, juice, croissants, bread, eggs, and a slice of cheese, cereal, milk, tea and hot chocolate.

The menu stated that eggs would be cooked any way you wanted, although they only offered fried or omelets..

era before the Civil War, the Gilded Age of the 1870s to the late 1890s, the Roaring 20s, and the great period of national decline since the 1970s.

Both Republicans and Democrats and various third parties have supported and opposed both We and I values at different points in their history. However, since the Republicans opened their doors to the Dixiecrats in the 1950s and fully embraced Goldwater conservatism and Nixon’s Southern strategy in the 1960s and 1970s, they have increasingly embraced I values and steadily reduced support for We values and policies.

Putnam and Garrett did not directly apply their theory to the Pandemic, and the social scientists who achieved the breakthrough findings about sectarianism clearly took pains

to avoid partisan positions. Yet the implications for the application of their findings are obvious. Many, perhaps most, supporters of both parties have become sectarian and express animosity toward their opponents.

Yet it is only the leadership of the Republican Party that has followed a sectarian approach to governance in addition to its emphasis on individualism and associated conservative ideologies. Thus since the Party adopted the 1994 Contract with America, it has rejected the idea of compromise or any form of bipartisan cooperation to govern, thereby implicitly following a sectarian strategy of action.

When Democrats have held the presidency since that time, the purpose of the Republican Party has not been to develop the best laws for America, it has overtly advocated taking only the actions needed to make sure that the Democratic presidents cannot be reelected.

More recently, not a single Republican member of Congress voted to support the American Rescue Act to provide financing for the government to combat the Pandemic. After a bipartisan commission was negotiated with equal Republican and Democratic rights and representation to investigate the January 6 attack on Congress, the Republicans refused to participate at all. Small groups of Republican legislators are working on bipartisan bills on infrastructure, police reform, and some other specific proposals, but the Party’s leadership in both bodies of Congress and affiliated organizations, such as CPAC, reject the idea of any cooperation.

The results of the Republican stance with respect to the Pandemic is clearly reflected in the persistent expression of reservations about vaccination and mask wearing by leading Republican and Conservative figures, such as Senators Rand Paul and Ron Johnson and Tucker Carlson. In several red states Republican governors have even rejected passing on funds for unemployment and education under the American Rescue Act to signify their rejection of anything Democratic. The results of the GOP position are reflected in a June poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation which showed that 86 percent of Democrats but just half (52 percent) of Republicans have been vaccinated. The new fourth wave of the Pandemic that is again filling our hospitals and morgues is primarily a red state phenomenon now, but tragically by providing so many opportunities for the virus to mutate and spread, it may guarantee that the Pandemic will continue. Ironically, the good work President Trump did to support the development of vaccines is now being negated by the refusal of so many of his followers to be vaccinated.

Sectarianism now threatens our democracy as well. Almost half the supporters of the Republican Party believe that President Biden was not legitimately elected despite more than sixty court cases that rejected all the claims of massive fraud and the official statements of Republican officials. I values and the assertion of personal liberty have now become so dominant among Republicans that they have lost all sense of connection to the We values that have played such an important role in America’s pioneer heritage, in the Mayflower Pact which started the path toward the proclamation by We the people that sought a more perfect union.

Yet President Biden is not discouraged. He believes so strongly in the cooperation that we have achieved in the past, in the example that Abraham Lincoln provided of keeping the door open for the Southern rebels to return to the Union, that he insists on making sure that Republicans know they will be welcome too.
