n August 20, 2022, a rally was held in Stockton, California for UFW march ers who were walking from Delano to sacramento to build support for and urge Governor Gavin Newsom to sign AB2183 (Stone), the Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act. This article will briefly discuss the bill but will focus mainly on how the rally came into being. If enacted, AB2183 would expand agri cultural workers voting rights when deciding whether to unionize. Currently, elections can only be held on sites where farm workers are subject to intimidation from labor contractors and growers. t he new law will allow farm workers to vote on sites other than growercontrolled sites and give them the option of mail-in-voting.itishardto determine the size of a crowd in an open-access area like a public park with no seats or gate receipts to count. UFW Director of Strategic Campaigns, Elizabeth Strater stated, in a Fox 40 News interview that 1,000 people attended the rally. However, the Stockton Record estimated the crowd at 300, which in my opinion grossly undercounted the turnout. Another observer, Stockton’s International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), Local 54, President Eric Reyes stated, that in his estimation there were at least 1,000 people if not more in attendance. The turnout was impressive, especially, since Saturday broke a record for Stockton’s hottest day on August 20th at 105 degrees eclipsing the previous August 20th record of 104. Fortunately, the rally location, Con stitution Park, had ample trees that provided adequate shade, and there was an abundance of ice-cold beverages provided gratis. Not apparent to most, the Stockton rally was part of a larger organizing campaign initi ated by Eriberto Fernandez, Civic Participa tion and Policy Organizer for the UFW Foun dation, who had responsibility for organizing UFW supporters in cities all along the route to Sacramento. UFW organizers in the tradition of Cesar Chavez and Fred Ross were legend ary for hands-on detailed plans for every facet of their initiatives. However, Eriberto did his organizing from a distance simultaneously coordinating with Stockton and other cities. He established and authorized town Com mittees to do the ground level organizing and tasked them with getting donations for the marcher’s meals, housing, and for organizing a rally. Publicity as well as networking to build community support was also necessary. based on a phone discussion that served as an interview, Eriberto asked Alicia Ramirez, of Linden, to become chairperson of the Stockton Town Committee and eventually to serve as the committee’s treasurer. she accepted and immediately began building membership and executing the items outlined on the detailed “Town Committee Checklist.” the Town Committee Checklist included: food; housing; morning departure; entertainment, Sacramento Aug. 26th rally; identification of key supporters; and first aid care packages. Each of the checklist headings was broken down into specific items needed or tasks. For example, under food the list included Gatorade, ice, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Housing check list included: beds for permanent marchers (at least 25 beds); dinner; showers; and rides for one-day marchers. The feedback loop between Eriberto and Alicia facilitated strategies and problem solving in fulfilling the tasks on the checklist on a dayto-day basis. Additionally, Eriberto forwarded policy and procedures adopted by the UFW to protect marchers from COVID-19. the town Committee membership initial ly included Pastor Nelson Rabell, Roy Perez, Richard Rios, Saul & Sonya Serna, Armando Valerio, and Lupita Vasquez. Maria Elena serna and i nes ruiz-Houston subsequently joined. Also, Jessica Medina-Betancourt, served as UFW representative and adviser, joined the group and organized and facilitated committee Zoom meetings. Later, Agustin ramirez and Chris Christenson of the i LW u Local 54 joined. On the other hand, the Republicans loyal to Donald Trump are campaigning to increase their representation in Congress and in state legislatures and other offices in the following ways:►by denouncing and continuing abstruse measures intended to somehow overturn the results of the 2020 election and by taking revenge on Republican leaders who resist Donald Trump’s anti-democratic ►misdeeds; by voting to continue the high cost of Outrage and Chaos vs. Law and Order from the previous page insulin and the right of pharmaceutical industry to charge whatever they want for their drugs; ►by maintaining the right of unrestricted sales and citizen access to assault weapons and military equipment, such as extended magazines, armor piercing ammunition, protective vests, and so on, regardless of age, safety training, or other qualifica ►tions; by encouraging partisan state legislatures rather than special officials and nonpartisan authorities to control the outcome of elections in their states; ►by passing state laws to suppress the vote of persons with less resources and more personal, financial, and other difficulties in exercising their right to suffrage; ►By vilifying and endangering the FBI, Department of Justice, the Capitol police and other law enforcement institutions that protect and serve all the American people ; ►by organizing the republican minority elected by 42 percent of the American people to use filibusters and other parliamen tary maneuvers in the U.S. Senate to impede, obstruct, and endlessly delay the rights of the Democratic majority elected by 58 percent of the people to take government actions in the interest of the nation; ► by maintaining and increasing the tax breaks and access to spe cials services and other advantages of the wealthy and corporations; ►by extending the privileges of individuals and businesses to exploit natural resources primarily for their own profits and despite the adverse environmental effects and hu man costs of their activities. t he virtues and vices of the two sides can of course be debated endlessly, but President Reagan once offered a remedy by asking people to consider whether they were better off than they had been under the previous administration. No obstante, es in teresante el hecho de que los medios estadounidensescorporativosnoseindignen cuando su país vecino sigue perdiendo trabajadores mediáticos a un ritmo mucho más rápido de lo normal. Es más, mis colegas periodistas de Ciudad Acuña, México, me dicen que es “temporada de caza” declarada contra nuestros desafortunados colegas en México. Y así es. Hacer un seguimiento de cuántos y dónde se están cometiendo estos atroces actos es como tratar de hacer un seguimiento de las múltiples distracciones que los medios corporativos combinan y etiquetan como “no ticias”. Mientras tanto, las noticias fuertes y relevantes son difíciles de hallar. Las historias que muestran verdaderos actos de valentía o compasión humana se pierden entre los anun cios de nuevos automóviles o lo último que ha salido para ayudarle a oír bien. Los mas recientes reportajes sobre cómo los valientes periodistas mexicanos son amen azados y asesinados por informar sobre la relación que existe entre altos cargos policiales y políticos con las bandas transnacionales de narcotraficantes parecen no tener ningún mérito para los editores y gerentes de redac ción de los diarios estadounidenses. Most media print or electronic staffs, for example, would react if law enforcement of ficials uncovered tortured and dismembered bodies stuffed in garbage bags dumped in some drainage ditch of their city or area. imag ine if farther investigations reveal remains to be that of media workers. It’s similar when a cop is fatally shot. How much faster is their response time in comparison to a Joe shmoe being riddled with bullets from a gang-banger? You can bet a newspaper’s yearly subscription rate that the media folks are going to give you detail after detail in a series of front page sto ries. not to mention daily editorials complete with cartoons warning you that killing an innocent journalist is a one-way trip to hell for the guilty party. Unless some of these fine media labor force members have been taking refuge under their desks or behind their cameras, no casual ties, just a few frayed nerves for its vile intent made the incident a throwback to the 50s and 60s, when terrorism against the NAACP and other civil rights activists was common and front-page news. My Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, fellow journalists, however, tell me we must focus attention on Mexico’s open season on our unfortunate colleagues. And so it is. Keeping track of how many and where these atrocious acts are being committed is like try ing to keep track of the many distractions corporate media slaps together and calls its product, “news.”

Lately, the world is realizing that ‘freedom of the press’ is becoming a mere catchphrase, not a guar antee for receiving news at any cost. Interesting, however, is the fact that there is no outrage from American corporate media when their neighboring country keeps losing media workers at a much rapid pace than normal.

Dr. Antonio Gonzalez, University of Houston professor of Chicano Studies, on a recent radio show stated: “In the American psyche there’s always been racial hierarchy in terms of importance assigned to certain lives over others. t hat’s the inescapable and undeniable reality of how our media covers things.” He went on to say, “It seems that here i n America it’s not terrorism if people of color are the targets and white people are the suspects, some media executives say it’s not newsworthy.”

Raoul... Más Que un Artista

El reciente fallecimiento de nuestro amigo, Raoul E. Mora, ha con mocionado a nuestra comunidad en Stockton. Pero su legado, como artista, amante del arte —y todo lo mexicano, per durará a través de sus compañeros, familia y los muchos alumnos que tuvo como profesor de arte. Raoul fue, básicamente, maestro y coleccionista de arte —aprovechando cada oportunidad para ilustrar a cualquier inte resado en el arte y la cultura mexicana. Fue una biblioteca virtual de conocimiento sobre México, su arte y artesanía… y entrar a su casa era como entrar a un museo de arte mexicano. tenía ojo para ver la importancia de recolectar y preservar todas las cosas hechas a mano, ju guetes, tallados, cerámicas, máscaras, santos o retablos. A menudo lamentaba la pérdida de estas habilidades tradicionales en el arte popular actual y la abundancia de imitaciones en México ¡había incluso hechas en China! Raoul tenía muchos dones, pero el que recuerdo con más cariño era su don de los cum plidos. siempre hallaba algo que felicitar en todos y cualquiera. Muchas veces —durante los más de 50 años que lo traté— lo escuché felicitar a la gente por cualquier esfuerzo, no importa cuánto pequeño fuese. A él le gustaba llamarme “Renacentista Chicano” (lo que me halagaba mucho) ya que yo, además de artista, incursionaba como músico — tocando la gui tarra y cantando— al igual que como escritor y poeta. A menudo se me acercaba por un artículo que había escrito para nuestra revista Joaquín, diciéndome “Richard, me encantó ese artículo que escribiste en...”, justo cuando pensaba que nadie había prestado atención a mis Conocídivagaciones.araoul en algún momento a mediados o finales de los 1970s —cuando comencé a enseñar en Delta Community Co llege. Él enseñaba arte allí a tiempo parcial, junto con su compadre, Rodolfo García. Fue un vínculo instantáneo. Después de un par de años más, nuestro grupo de artistas creció para incluir a más artistas como Luz Lúa, Jorge Elizalde, Juan González, Susan Bod y otros, y nos propusi mos buscar un lugar en el centro de Stockton en el que pudiéramos exhibir nuestro arte y fomentar el arte entre nuestra juventud. Así, alrededor de 1997, el Mexican Heritage Center (Centro del Patrimonio Mexicano, o MHC) abrió sus puertas en la Calle Main en Stockton Centro. Allí, y a lo largo de los años, monta ríamos muchas y destacadas exhibiciones, además de dar a luz en nuestras dependencias a una de nuestras exhibiciones más populares: “El Día de Muertos ”. Ésta pronto se convir tiería una pieza central para el MHC. Pronto añadimos otros eventos anuales: “Navidad en el Valle ”, y Cinco de Mayo Raoul fue una central figura en todo esto, comisariando muchas de nuestras exhibicio nes. su conocimiento de México y sus tradi ciones fue fundamental para educarnos sobre los pormenores de cómo construir Ofrendas de Día de Muertos, y Nacimientos para la navidad. Than an Artist

he recent passing of our friend, Raoul E. Mora, has sent shock waves through our Stockton community. But his legacy, as an artist and lover of art and all things Mexican, will live on through his colleagues, family and the many students he had as an Art teacher. Primarily, Raoul was a teacher and art collector, seizing every opportunity to teach anyone who was interested about art and Mexican culture. He was a repository of knowledge about Mexico, its art and folk art and to walk into his home is like walking into a museum of Mexican art. He had an eye for seeing the importance of collecting and preserving all things made by hand, toys, carvings, pottery, masks, Santos, or retablos

i met raoul sometime in the mid or late 70s when I began teaching at Delta Commu nity College when he was teaching art there part-time, along with his compadre, Rodolfo García. It was an instant bonding. In time, the three of us began organizing exhibits of our work and student work at the college art gallery for events like Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day. Soon we added Joe Mariscal, ceramic teacher, and Business instructor, Mike Guerrero and student artists to our informal group like Roger Casillas, Albert Ramírez, and Richard Núñez. What we felt, individually or as a group, was the bond of our Mexican culture and the need for venues in which to share our talents as artists. In time, we felt the need to name our group of artists. At the time, I had kept tabs on my old art school buddies, Esteban Villa and José Montoya, who had just established a group of Chicano artists in Sacramento, calling them selves, Rebel Chicano Art Front, later donning the acronym, RCAF that sounded like Royal Canadian Air Force, so they became known as “Royal Chicano Air Force.” i proposed the idea of formalizing the group by naming ourselves too, and after much discussion( and arguments), we settled on “Artistas del Valle,” as some of us were not yet keen on the word Chicano, a word that often held negative connotations. him compliment others for any endeavor no matter how small. He was fond of calling me a “Chicano Renaissance Man” (and I loved it), since in addition to being an artist, I dabbled as a musician, singing and playing the guitar, and a writer and poet. He’d often approach me about an article i’d written for our Joaquin magazine, telling me “Richard, I loved that article you wrote on...”, just when I thought that no one had paid any attention to my ramblings.

He often lamented the loss of these traditional skills in folk art today and the abundance of knock-offs in Mexico, some even from China! r aoul had many things gifts but one which i most fondly recall was his gift for a compliment. Raoul was a central figure in all of this, curating many of our exhibits. His knowledge of Mexico and its traditions was instrumental in teaching us the ins and outs of how to build Dia de Muertos ofrendas and Nacimientos ( nativity scenes) for our navidad exhibits.

Un diseño que donó al Salón de la Fama Mexicanoamericano, que mostraba la cabeza de la Estatua de la Liber tad rodeada de imágenes —un águila posada sobre un cactus con una serpiente en su pico, y una máscara del México precolombino, entre otras— se rifaba regularmente en sus ceremonias de inducción.

Made into a poster, it was regularly raffled at their induction ceremonies. Many times I called Raoul to ask him to donate a piece for raffles of numerous events or to be a guest speaker for some occasion and his answer was always, “Sure.” but my favorite thing was to visit his home and gawk at his exquisite collection of Mexican art and crafts, artfully displayed throughout his home, masks, figurines, ceramics, and listen to his stories on each piece, when he acquired it, what town or village it came from, the name of the artist or artisan! Linda, his wife, would chime in “Raoul, you still have stuff in boxes you haven’t even unpacked!” He would just smile and go out to acquire more. Often, I would run into him, or Rudy Gar cia at Superior Thrift Store, in search of some discarded treasure, and he prided himself in finding it. “Look at what I got at La Segunda, he would say proudly, showing me a prize piece he had bought for 50 cents! I could go on about Raoul, about role as a great husband, father or grandfather but we’ll leave that for another day. Mr. r aoul

Prior to Clinton’s disregard P recAutionA ry P rinci Ple as Secretary of State, Ukraine had placed a moratorium on farmland. this popular ban was an attempt to prevent the “marketization” of Ukraine’s commons and small farms by domestic oligarchs and foreign corporations4. But, in 2021, Volodymyr Zelensky signed into law a bill permitting the private sale of farmland. Zelensky capitulated to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who stipulated that the marketization of farmland be part of a “reform” in order to receive billions of dollars in loans from the IMF. Additionally, the IMF loan conditions required that Ukraine must also reverse its ban on genetically engi neered crops and enable private corporations like Monsanto/Bayer to plant their GMO seeds and spray the fields with herbicides like Roundup(ibid). At this point, U.S. embassies have been replaced by IMF mandates.

Jimmy joined Carlos at Diego’s wrestling matches. t he three friends thought that at Berkeley they would see each other more often. it didn’t happen. Carlos attended some of the wrestling matches to witness Diego victoriously overcome his opponents. t he three met about a dozen times at the student union and occasionally Diego saw Carlos in the library, but that was it. After their second year, Diego lost track of Carlos and Jimmy. Diego asked a friend who worked in Admissions to find out Carlos’ new address. His friend discovered that Carlos was no longer a student at Berkeley. Whatever happened to Carlos? it had already been more ten years since Diego and Carlos lived in the Conejeras the times hang ing out with Carlos and Jimmy were his best childhood memories.

He later would become a slingshot sharpshooter, on target with every pebble. Carlitos envisioned himself as David and picked up the slingshot to slay Goliath. He saw himself as an underdog that will always triumph over adversity; and it was this vision of himself that he used as a guide in becoming an outstanding athlete. For now, The Grasshoppers started planning their new mission: fighting crime. t he foxhole was getting too cluttered with weapons and the tin buckets used as chairs and tables, so the boys decided to expand the hideout. With a bucket, Carlitos dug a four-foot long tunnel below the surface of the ground. t he tunnel was needed to store weapons and equipment. Within two months, they dug four more tunnels, so there was one for each of the cardinal points. to be continued in the next issue...

La Guarida viene de la vuelta there were good trees in the neighborhood for one. to have a hideout up in a tree was too dangerous; one of them could fall off and get seriously hurt. A hideout underneath the foundation of one of the conejeras was out of the question; it was too dirty and sometimes the smell of a decaying cat or rat kept the kids from crawling under it. After a two-day rain, the tall grass in the empty lot between Johnny’s house and the nearby ice cream warehouse was still too wet to be it. In an attempt to find a shortcut through the tall grass, the two boys trampled on the grass, and they quickly realized that the grass was taller than Carlitos, who was three inches taller than Diego. The idea of having a hideout in the tall grass came to both of them at about the same time. Diego looked at Carlitos and read his mind: the tall grass was hiding the two of them from the rest of the world. Diego and Carlitos were excited that they had found a hideout. With their feet, they smashed down the grass, making a circle five feet in diameter, big enough to sit down in. Unfortunately, the wet grass instantly soaked through their pants. In their excitement, they dug a one-foot deep hole in the wet dirt with their hands. before they realized what they had done, the idea of digging a hole in the ground for their hideout came to them again at the same time and they kept digging until their foxhole was large enough for both of them to sit down to play games and solve crimes. t hey used an abandoned door to cover up the foxhole. Next, the discussion revolved around whether they should call their club “Los Conejos” (Rabbits), “The Gophers,” “The Moles,” or “Los Zorros ” (Foxes), but each name was rejected by one of them. one late afternoon, before it started getting dark, they took flashlights to stay late. They were too busy talking to notice the crickets signaling fellow creatures that it was safe to join them. The soft wind died down, giving a false im pression that the crickets were getting louder, when suddenly, a swarm of grasshoppers filled the night air, landing all around them, except in their foxhole. “t hat’s it! t he name of our club shall be, “The Grasshoppers,” exclaimed Carlitos.

O sea, se veía a sí mismo como un desvalido que siempre triunfaría sobre la adversidad —y fue esta imagen de sí mismo la que usó como guía para convertirse en un destacado atleta. Por ahora, los Grasshoppers comenzaron a planificar su nueva misión: combatir el crimen. imet Raoul Mora in an art workshop for teachers. t his was in the middle of the year 1968. The Stockton School District put out a call for teachers to offer art techniques and an exchange of ideas that each teacher would offer. Among the group, there were only three Hispanic males of Mexican descent. raoul and i soon realized that we had a lot in common. We both came from families with the same taste, culture, and very dedicated to Mexica nism, history, customs, and love for art. I felt that i had found a relative who understood much of my views. We believed that we had to fight for our students to know more about the many cultures and art of the world. schools at that time did not offer much interest in enriching the curriculum. r aoul and I exchanged materials such as music, books, and artifacts to make the world of art deeper and richer for the students. t his and other causes are what cemented a beautiful friendship that lasted years. Much can be written by various acquain tances of raoul. i will narrate a few of the many occasions that my compadre r aoul and i shared. since raoul was a collector of pre-Hispanic art, this was another link that united us. My collection was not as vast as his. t his led us to another unexpec ted experience. raoul had a friendship with Mr. Peter rodríguez. Peter was one of his art mentors, who founded the Museum of Mexican Art in San Fran cisco,Mr.California.Rodriguez asked raoul to lend him some pieces of pre-Hispanic pottery to exhibit in an art museum he plan ned to open in the city. He said yes; then he included me, and I also lent ceramics to Mr. Rodriguez. We did not know how important this project was going to be. We went to the museum opening in r aoul’s classic Chevy The Mexican Museum of Art was first opened in an area near Valencia street. t he place was small, but Peter designed it in a very beautiful and professional way. Linda and Raoul —the Moras, their other friends, and I enjoyed tequila, mariachis, and socialized cheerfully. t he inauguration of the Mexican Museum was a complete success. Fuimos a la apertura del museo en el Chevy clásico de raoul. El Museo Mexicano de Arte se abrió por primera vez en un área cerca de la calle Valencia. El lugar era chico pero Peter lo diseñó de una manera muy bella y profesional.

Conocí a raoul Mora en un taller de arte para maestros. Esto fue a mediados del año del 1968. El Distrito Escolar de Stockton hizo un llamado a los maestros para ofrecer técnicas de arte y un intercambio de ideas que ofrecería cada maestro. En el grupo solo éramos tres varones hispanos de descendencia mexicana. r aoul y yo pronto nos dimos cuenta que teníamos mucho en común.Ambos veníamos de familias con los mismos gustos, cultura, y muy entregados al mexicanismo, historia, costumbres, y el amor al arte. sentí que había encontrado un famil iar que comprendía mucho de mis puntos de vista. Creíamos que teníamos que luchar para que nuestros alumnos conocieran más de las muchas culturas y arte del mundo.

El Sr. Rodríguez pidió a Raoul que le pre stara unas piezas de cerámicas pre-hispánicas para exhibir en un museo de arte que pensaba abrir en la ciudad. Él le dijo que sí; luego me incluyó a mí y yo también presté cerámicas al señor rodríguez. no sabíamos del impor tante resultado que iba a generar este asunto.

The best part of this experience took place on our way back to the hotel. We were passing through a small neighborhood when we noticed a sandwich-board advertising the appearance of Chavela Vargas that evening. Let me explain a bit. We were made aware of this Mexican singer in the early 1970s. When a teacher friend, Carlos Parra, played a Long Play that she had recorded. Anyway. t here was a small sandwich sign that read: “oNe NIGht oNlY Chavela Vargas in person”. We made the taxi stop. We knew that this controversial artist no longer sang. What is she doing in oaxaca during the Day of the Dead season? Could it be a joke? But how? Is she alive and singing? Well, we didn’t think twice. We got out of the taxi, bought tickets in the first row, and we were on our tiptoes with anticipation. Yes, it was her. And she sang and told us about her life between sets. she confessed about her alcoholism to us. it tore our hearts out, and at the end of the concert, Raoul and I, like teeny groupies, tried to get backstage. Lin da —laughing at us— called us dino-groupies. We had to find a way to talk to her. In the end they let us into her dressing room- there, there she was. Sitting in front of a mirror. She asked us to come closer and joked with us about the Day of the Dead, saying, “I hope you didn’t expect to see me at an altar.” We took a video of the entire show, and when we saw her there, she allowed us to take videos of her giving us her photo with a dedication... and a kiss on the cheek! What a night! raoul was stunned. Linda and I were too. Imagine what a trip, what happiness, and what a great company. This was art at its best. ¡Ay compadre Raoul! How i’m going to miss you.

Hicimos parar el taxi. sabíamos que esta controversial artista ya no cantaba. ¿Qué anda haciendo en Oaxaca en temporada de Día de Muertos? ¿Sería broma? ¿Pero cómo? ¿Está vivita y cantando? Pues ¡ni hablar! nos baja mos del taxi, compramos boletos en primera fila, y no hallábamos las horas que llegara la hora de la función. Sí, sí era ella. Y cantó y nos contó su vida entre canción y canción. Confesó de su alco holismo. Nos arrancó el alma, y al terminar el concierto, Raoul y yo —como quincea ñeras— tratamos de ir tras el escenario. La esposa de Raoul, Linda, riéndose de lo que hacíamos, nos tildó de “groupie -saurios”. no hallábamos como poder hablar con Chavela. Finalmente logramos que nos dejaron entrar a su camerino. Allí estaba. sentada frente a un espejo. Nos pidió que nos acercáramos y bromeó con nosotros respecto que estábamos en Días de Muertos, diciendo “Espero que no esperaban verme en un altar”.

tener su momento en la historia del arte en Cal ifornia. Este pequeño momento inició lo que es ya uno de los mayores museos del estado. Hubo muchos momentos como este durante mi amistad con los Moras. El más memorable fue cuando fuimos con ellos a Oaxaca, México. El propósito era el enriqueci miento cultural. Queríamos estar tan cerca como podíamos al arte, los artistas, y traer de vuelta el conocimiento y también artefactos artísticos. tuvimos la fortuna de conocer a un taxista que inmediatamente nos llevó a cumplir nuestra misión. Vimos la Oaxaca que no es comúnmente visitada. Fuimos recibidos por renombrados artistas, y fuimos invitados en una cena en el hogar de nuestro taxista. Luego, visitamos a los curanderos. La mejor parte de esta experiencia tuvo lugar al tiempo de nuestro regreso al hotel. There were many moments like this du ring my friendship with the Moras t he most memorable one was when I took with them to Oaxaca, Mexico. Again, the purpose was enrichment. We wanted to get as close as we could to the art, the artists, and bring back the knowledge and artifacts. We were fortunate to meet a taxi driver, who immediately took us to our mission. We saw the oaxaca not usually experienced. We were received by renowned artists, and were guests at a dinner at our driver’s home. From there, we experienced a visit to the curanderos.

Por Alicia Márquez Ramírez el 20 de agosto de 2022 Papá, ¡Entraron con Tambores de guerrero!” Con golpes de tambor tan fuertes que mi cuerpo tembló, ¡Qué emoción! Vinieron marchando los guerreros campesinos de hueso colorado al parque Constitución haciendo gritos inspiradores. “Si se puede!” “Que viva la causa!” “Que viva Cesar Chavez!”

Participé en ésta gran reunión de Stockton,Ca. en la marcha de Delano a Sacramento a la capital en memoria de tí, mi padre, Guadalupe Márquez.

Sentí tu fuerza en mi papá a verlos marchar. Que orgullo sentí, te veía entre de ellos en espíritu. Quemados por el sol, Sudando y cansados, Haciendo un sacrificio para la causa, Para la justicia, Para nuestra gente, El campesino de hueso colorado. La Virgen de Guadalupe enfrente de los marchadores Seguida por Dolores Huerta Símbolos grandes en nuestra cultura. Gritos y más gritos se oían llenos de orgullo y felicidad. Ahora entiendo mejor que nunca lo que me querías enseñar El sacrificio que se tiene que hacer para la justicia. La gente de hueso colorado no se rinde, Es Fuerte,resistente, Trabajadora, y sin miedo lucha por sus derechos. Sus nietos y bisnietos aprendieron bien de este gran día 20 de agosto, 2022 Nunca olvidarán la lección del sacrificio.

On August 23rd in a text exchange with Alicia, Eriberto wrote, “Stockton’s rally was the best! ”

Jose Perez, Director of Communication for the Stockton Diocese, with the blessing of Bishop Myron J. Cota, disseminated UFW march and rally information in church bulle tins throughout the parishes in the Stockton Diocese. Students from Franklin and Edison did an outstanding job collecting plastic bottles for recycling and clean-up during and after the rally. Alfonso Grijalva col laborated with Alicia on the design and price for a t-shirt that he produced and sold for $20, $10 for the shirt & silk-screening (at cost) and $10 for the UFW. The T-shirt became a hot item, and he quickly sold out - 120 T-shirts. He was gratified that his hero Dolores Huerta wore his shirt to the rally and asked him to get more for her. All totaled, he raised $1200 for the UFW. Eriberto had liked the idea of a t-shirt and encouraged Alicia to pursue a vendor, and she settled on Alfonso. Eriberto also envisioned Mariachi playing De Colores as the marchers took their seats for dinner and that happened as well.

Officer, took over coordination with Alicia for the rally. In the final analysis, Eriberto’s approach to organizing, while executed from a distance, was highly structured and effective. the Zoom meetings worked as well. However, all of this might have been enhanced by the fact that all the committee members from different disci plines were seasoned professionals.

For example, Maria Elena Serna provided insight based on her vast experience as an UFW organizer during the height of El Movimiento, and Ines Ruiz-Houston, Vice President of the El Concilio, provided vans to transport marchers to & from the rally, tables, chairs, and tents for rally set-up. Saul and sonya’s Catalyst (an Art & Wellness Center) became the depot for donations of water and Gatorade, and they procured a large breakfast coffee donation. saul also produced a video promoting the rally. Richard Rios provided art, signs and procured an important donation. roy Perez networked with building trades unions and videoed/photographed the march and rally. Armando Valerio provided networking with a vast number of community organizations to publicize and procure donations and arranged for clergy blessings. t hrough Armando’s network, Chris Rouppet San Joaquin County supervisor Miguel Villapudua’s Chief of staff provided essential support and facilitated key donations.there were some outstanding donations. As it turns out, Miguel Villapudua comes from a family of caterers and is a chef. Alicia met with him, and he initially agreed to prepare and donate dinners for forty marchers. At first the idea seemed to be coming mainly from alarmists, but now a group of mainstream historians have even called President biden’s attention to the potential. under these circum stances, a closer look at how the two parties have been conducting matters where citizen interests have recently been quite intense and where the parties are forced by law and other circumstances to interact are conducted. one of the most important arenas where a great deal of party interaction is unavoidable is Congress. During the last two years, the biden administration has advanced and passed so many major laws that it is being compared with the halcyon years of LbJ’s Great society and FDR’s New Deal. What many observers fail to note is how many of these initiatives have passed with bipartisan support: the path breaking trillion dollar infrastructure law, the financing of COVID relief, the first gun safety law in three decades, the Pact Act which funds cancer treatment for veterans, the innova tive CH i Ps Act for dramatically increasing semiconductor production in the U.S., and most importantly the Inflation Reduction Act which funds clean energy development and the reduction of the costs of medicines and reduces inflationary pressure by creating a minimum tax for large corporations. t he contributions by r epublican law makers were widely praised, and they were repeatedly honored in White House signing ceremonies. Meanwhile, a senior Republican senate leader rejected such cooperation as “It’ll be like hell.” Indeed, bipartisan coop eration was so rare and strongly rejected by President Trump during his first two years that one scholar wrote an article to point out how a number of Republicans had in fact worked under the radar in cooperation with Democrats in the foreign policy area especially in dealing with Russia, somewhat the way it had been done at the start of the Cold War during the trumanAnotheradministration.importantarena relates to the way those in one party refer to those in the oppos ing party. Both Democrats and Republicans see the other side as becoming more radical. t he pattern has gotten so negative in both our major parties that it has become a source of increasing concern and identified as political sectarianism. Just a few more seats in the senate and continued control of the House will enable Democrats to end the filibuster and provide even more opportunity under the rule of law for all Americans.
