Suddenly, after more than two years of Pandemic quiet, the border was again in tumult and hardly any of trump’s ballyhooed new border walls had been completed. t he biden administration agrees with the majority of the American people that immigration makes a vital contribution to the dynamism, vital resources base, openness, competitiveness and innovativeness of the u.s. economy. instead of immigration as a drain on the economy, it is generally viewed as a motor that needs to be applied judiciously. Asylum seeking is also a human right.

In contrast, Trump era brutality and outright restrictions on immigration and disregard for asylum rights had so severely curtailed legal migration to the u s. that it contributed to the contraction of the US economy in 2020. Our lack of labor force flexibility and severe worker shortages in several areas helped fuel inflation and reduce the capacity of the U.S. to cope with the Pandemic and adjust to supply chain bottlenecks that were then worsened by the War in Ukraine1 republicans falsely accuse the administration and Democrats in general of favoring open borders and unregulated immigration and fail to recognize that the u.s. had achieved one of the largest reductions in the flow of undocumented migrants in U.S. history between 2005 and 2017.2 it was an effort started by President Bush and continued by President Obama, despite the obstruction by highly conservative Republicans, called Nativists, who oppose nearly all migrants. For this reason President trump emphasized building border walls and harsh law enforcement measures. to intimidate people who might think of immigrating, he separated children from their parents at the border and took other inhumane actions. He hardened the embargo against Cuba and took similar harsh measures against nicaragua and Venezuela. trump policies and actions clearly followed some very old and generally lamented u s. traditions. At the beginning of our republic, the Nativists hated the German colonists and wanted to deny citizenship even to the two German-speaking regiments who fought for George Washington and barely survived the winter at Valley Forge. In the 1840s the Know Nothing Party was formed to oppose Irish and Catholic immigrants. We also now have an enormous pool of frustrated neighbors in the DACA program who have lost their path to citizenship and their right to work in the U.S. even though most of them came to the u.s. as children or were born here, speak only English and have never lived in the countries to which the trump administration was trying to send them because their parents had been undocumented immigrants.

Although the record is not clear, there is little evidence that the flow of undocumented immigrants had slowed further before the Pandemic hit with full force and allowed the trump administration to interfere even with internationally protected asylum rights. trump also stopped or reduced a whole series of u.s. programs designed to help the economies, combat human trafficking, and reduce human rights abuses in the neighboring Western Hemisphere countries that have long been the major source of undocumented migrants at the border. i magine just tiny war torn and corrupt El Salvador, the smallest country in Latin America, ranks fifth as a source of U.S. immigrants since 2000. What would happen if the immigration spigot were suddenly turned on in suddenly leftist brazil, Colombia and Peru with many times the population of Central America and the Caribbean?

Los republicanos acusan falsamente a la Administración —y a los demócratas en general— de favorecer las fronteras abiertas y la inmigración sin regulación alguna, y no reconocen que EEuu logró una de las mayores reducciones en el flujo de inmigrantes indocumentados en la historia de EEUU entre 2005 y 20172. un esfuerzo iniciado por bush y continuado por el presidente Obama, a pesar de la obstrucción de los republicanos más conservadores, llamados ‘nativistas’, que se oponen a casi todos los inmigrantes.
