1630 Van ness avenue Fresno, ca icannot believe that it has been 10 years since the passing of Maestro Jose Montoya, cofounder of the Rebel Chicano Art Front better known as the RCAF. In the past 10 plus years, so many creative artists of that time period have passed. Armando Cid, Richard Favela, Esteban Villa and from Stockton Raoul Mora. Todos ¡Presentes!

In the October 2013 issue of Joaquin Magazine, I, as a former student of Don Jose Montoya wrote about his passing in sacramento. In 1969/70 I had been accepted into the Mexican American Education Project at Csu Sacramento headed by Dr. Steve Arvizu. This program and its maestros were to be a life altering experience for me and the thousands of counselees that i was eventually to work with in the city of Tracy Unified School District.

As i vividly remember my time with Jose Montoya, in the classroom or in the college cafeteria where the Chicanada occupied one long cafeteria table i can still see Jose drawing images on napkins and then leaving them there. Aware of Jose’s fame as a Chicano artist i would collect these priceless pieces after everyone had gone to class.

Jose Montoya’s r EsonA nt VALLEY is the title of the exhibition at the Arteamericas in Fresno, California that runs from May 12th to November 26, 2023. May 12, the final day ends with a celebration from 12 to 3 p.m. The exhibition consists of hundreds of napkin art pieces created by Jose over the years, in addition to poetry, as well as many other personal items that illustrate his uniqueness.

6. Joaquin Magazine October 2013 Year 2 No.2 on May 28, 1932, and migrated to California in the 40’s con su familia. Raised in the 1940’s Jose was to experience the Pachuco time period and the ugly, racist reaction by the U.S. military and citizens in California. Jose, in addition to being a migrant farm worker, was also a Korean War Veterano, all three experiences played a major role in his art and poetry. t his outstanding exhibit gets its name from Jose’s poem “resonant Valley” —that can be found in the 2016 book co-edited by Selene Preciado and Jose’s son richard Montoya: “Jose Montoya’s Abundant Harvest, Works on Paper/Works on Life ” una experiencia que cambiaría mi vida y la de los miles de orientadores escolares con los que eventualmente trabajaría en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de la ciudad de Tracy. recuerdo vívidamente mis años con José Montoya —en el salón de clases o en la cafetería de la universidad... donde la Chicanada ocupaba una larga mesa en esa cafetería. todavía puedo ver a José dibujando imágenes en servilletas y luego dejándolas allí. Consciente de la fama de José como artista chicano, yo recolectaba esas invaluables piezas después de que todos se hubieran ido a clase.

VALLE r EsonAntE de José Montoya es el título de la exposición en Arteamericas en Fresno, California, que se lleva a cabo desde del 12 de mayo al 26 de noviembre de 2023. Ese último día —noviembre 26—termina con una celebración de 12 a 3 p.m. La exposición consta de cientos de piezas de arte en servilletas creadas por José a lo largo de los años, además de poesía... como asimismo muchos artículos personales que ilustran su particular personalidad.

José nació en Escobosa, Nuevo México, el 28 de mayo de 1932, y emigró a California en la década de 1940 con su familia. Creciendo en la década de 1940. José experimentaría el “período Pachuco” y la intimidante reacción racista de los militares y ciudadanos estadounidenses en California. Además de trabajador agrícola migrante, José fue, también, veterano de la Guerra de Corea. Estas tres experiencias jugaron un importante papel en su arte y poesía.

Esta destacada exhibición recibe el nombre de un poema escrito por José, “Valle Resonante”, y que se encuentra en el libro editado por Selene Preciado y el hijo de José, Richard Montoya: “ Abundante Cosecha: Obra en Papel, obras en Vida” (2016).
