A

Where Do Latino Interests Come In?

s I listened to the President’s State of the Union Address and the Republican responses on January 28, I kept asking myself how these contrasting political positions affect Latino interests. President Obama laid out a clear and hard to reject goal for the nation to “…make this a year of action….to build ladders of opportunity for the middle class.” He added that, despite great gains in wealth for a few, “inequality has deepened.

Upward mobility has stalled…”

The data about inequality are widely available and mostly beyond questioning now: since 1979, U.S. productivity – that is the value of what workers make or do -- has increased by 90 percent, but family income has risen only 8 percent. Ninety-five percent of the increase in personal income over the last four years, almost all of the gains in our economy since the 2009 recession, has gone to just the top one percent of the income earners. Average CEO pay was 30 times average worker wages in the 1970s, but is now 273 times higher, and a family in the top one percent in income today is worth 288 times as much as a typical family. Furthermore, the single factor that is driving Foods Stamps demand is the increase in the number of families who depend on minimum wage jobs that leave them far below the poverty line.

Our local experience with widening inequality and diminished access to opportunity is beyond question. Unemployment in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties is about 13 percent, and four to seven points higher for people of color, in contrast to about seven percent joblessness nationwide and less than six percent in wealthier California counties. Less than 43 percent of children ages three and four here in the valley, where two thirds or more are Latinos, have access to pre-school education, while the statewide average is 49 percent and in wealthy counties with few Latinos it is above 58 percent. In our area, less than a quarter of adults 25 and older have any university degree, but the state average is 36 percent and wealthy counties are above 46 percent.

Not surprisingly, we recently experienced over 800 violent crimes in San Joaquin County for 100,000 people, in contrast to an average of just over 400 in California counties and of 386 in other states.

La experiencia en el aumento de la desigualdad y menor acceso al bienestar económico en nuestra área es indudable. El desempleo en los condados San Joaquín y Stanislaus es alrededor del 13 por ciento, y 4 a 7 puntos superior entre la gente de color, en contraste al siete por ciento nacional y al menos del seis por ciento entre condados californianos más acaudalados. En el Valle —donde dos tercios de los niños de 3 a 4 años son latinos— menos de un 43 por ciento de ellos recibe educación preescolar. En condados más pudientes es el 58 por ciento. Por acá menos de un cuarto de los adultos sobre 25 años tiene título de educación superior, aunque el promedio estatal es 36 por ciento y en condados de mejores ingresos es sobre 46 por ciento. Más del 19 por ciento de nuestros jóvenes entre 16 y 24 años ni trabajan ni estudian, creando la llamada población desconectada de donde se nutre la mayoría de las pandillas y la violencia. portunity Nation has determined crucial areas foster the access to opportunity in general: pre-kindergarten education for all three-and four-year olds, degree of citizen involvement in civic and volunteer programs, keeping youth in school, earning of college degrees, and access to employment. The goal of the Opportunity Nation program is to prevent zip codes from determining upward mobility in America.

So what actions did President Obama and the many Republicans who responded to his speech recommend for dealing with this increasingly crucial problem for America? The President said that if Congress does not act on his recommendations, he will use the limited Executive authority he has to move ahead. For instance, even if Congress does not increase the minimum wage for the country —by executive order— he can require that federal contracts meet a higher level of minimum wage.

He again emphasized comprehensive immigration reform in order to enable immigrants to compete for jobs and acquire education, universal access for three- and four-year olds to pre-kindergarten, programs to reduce the cost of college education and increased access to technology in poorer areas, expanded worker training programs, restored funding for unemployment insurance, financing of energy and transportation infrastructure projects, and so on. It is quite an impressive array of fairly specific measures, even if he has advocated most of them before.

Republican responses to the President’s address were different in some respects but alike in a few ways. All four of the statements I reviewed were lacking in specifics and neglected any concern for inequality, in contrast to the emphasis they placed on reducing government spending and the size of our public debt. All four also said the main challenge was to reduce the size of government. They mentioned, repeatedly, the Keystone Pipeline— project that rather than reduce inequality will primarily benefit the wealthy oil and gas industry.

The Republicans also shared one other statement —perhaps stated most simply by Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers about a different gap: “(the key problem for the nation is that)…the President’s policies are making people’s lives harder. Republicans have plans to close the gap.” Of course, the primary example given for the harder lives Obama is causing relates to the bureaucratic snafus due to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, but perhaps by calling it a gap will make it seem as important as the income gap and inequality.

Para esta encrucijada nacional ¿Qué medidas recomendaron el presidente Obama y los muchos republicanos que respondieron a su discurso? El Presidente dijo que si el Congreso no se pronunciaba a sus propuestas utilizará su limitada autoridad ejecutiva para seguir adelante. Por ejemplo, incluso si el Congreso no sube el sueldo mínimo para el país, él —por decreto presidencial— puede obligar que todo contrato federal cumpla con un sueldo mínimo superior. Nuevamente enfatizó sobre una total reforma inmigratoria para que los inmigrantes puedan competir por empleos y obtener una educación, sobre acceso universal a todo niño de 3 y 4 años a educación pre-

kinder, programas que reduzcan el costo de la universidad y un mejor acceso a tecnología en barrios populares, ampliación de programas de capacitación laboral, reinstauración de fondos para el seguro de desempleo, financiación de proyectos energéticos y de infraestructura, y otros. Una impresionante lista de medidas con nombre y apellido, incluso si ya las ha propuesto antes.

Las respuestas republicanas al discurso presidencial fueron diferentes en ciertos puntos pero similares en otros. Las cuatro declaraciones que analicé carecían de específicos o de cualquier preocupación por la desigualdad.

Esto comparado al énfasis dedicado a reducir el gasto gubernamental y el volumen de nuestra deuda pública. Los cuatro también dijeron que el principal reto era reducir el tamaño del gobierno. Shortly after, fifteen of us entered the chambers of the State Board of Education.

We were ushered forward by a very kind woman; another offered translation, and a third watched the time. We were numbers 140 through 150 in a series of speakers lasting 7 hours. Yet, it seemed that our students do not even have a voice —while many spoke for them— they were absent. The exception was a highly successful young man from Visalia, who grew up in a Spanish-speaking home.

By then Board members were having lunch, but gave full attention to our group —even the timer gave us some slack. In all, fifteen of us spoke —including one who had been shuffled from one continuation school to another, attending nine in all, learning nothing. Other youth recounted challenges of gang activity, drugs, poverty, parents who could not speak English, and a system that has not coped well with the harsh realities students face daily. Two Spanish-speaking mothers spoke with passion about the hardship their autistic children face.

I concluded with a very brief statement: I have seen too many youth on the street; I’ve visited too many in jail or juvenile hall; I have buried too many.

FFSJ’s Youth Organizer Coordinator Alejandra Gutierrez’s message sums up what we travelled to share: “LCFF is a remarkable victory, it gives us the hope that we can ensure that our children and youth have the resources and support necessary to live up to their full potential, and live out their dreams.”

Sammy Nuñez, FFSJ founder and leader, took it farther: “LCFF is the greatest victory in ensuring educational equity since Brown v.

Board of Education, but we, as a community, need to be vigilant that this money is spent in the spirit of the legislation: to help our most vulnerable students.”

Yes, we must be vigilant. The campaign is just beginning. But I won’t call it a “battle”, because I’m confident that the school districts of our county —in special Stockton Unified— will take the lead to guarantee that these restricted funds make it to their destination: our most at-risk children.

Building business, two-wheels at a time Positive signs of recent economic improvement in the San Joaquin region are starting to emerge. As our communities stabilize, its future economic development should include a discussion on bikes.

Yes, I’m talking about bicycles. 2014 is shaping up to be a big year for new policies, ideas and attitudes in Stockton; applying these ideas to our local transportation network is a necessity. The goal of many local policy makers is retaining the region’s youth, particularly those with a college education and well developed employment skills. Reaching that goal is dependent on a whole array of factors including the viability of Stockton’s local transportation network and acknowledging that a growing segment of the Millennium and Generation X generations prefer communities with well-developed bike systems.

According to a recent report published by the group People Powered Movement (PPM,) “The average young person is driving less and biking and taking public transit more.”

Car ridership among Millennials is down 23 percent while transit ridership has increased by over 40 percent, and biking as a viable form of transportation is up over 24 percent. “For a rising generation of workers, who’ve grown up amid the urban rebound, traffic jams and office parks are the last places they want to spend time. That’s why companies that rely on young talent are increasingly seeking offices in central cities with good bike facilities,” read the report.

Currently, Stockton lacks a comprehensive bike network. Even though 13 percent local commuters travel 10 minutes or less —in a city mostly flat and with a relatively mild Mediterranean climate— less than 1 percent (about 700 people) regularly bike to work (Stockton Master Bikeway Plan, 2007). A more connected system with improved infrastructure would do wonders for encouraging more people to make the simple switch from four wheels to two.

Trading in the car for the occasional bike trip also does wonders not only for the individual (think improved health and less money spent on gas), but for the local economy as well.

When employees who commute by bike are healthier, small businesses spend less money on healthcare costs, it relieves vehicle congestion from the street system, allow more people to be out and about at one time, to shop locally —ten bikes can fit in a single car parking space, bringing fully 50 cents more retail revenue per hour per square foot than a single car would. T

hey say you must walk through fog to appreciate and understand the importance and value of light. My journey through high school made me realize what this saying meant. Many people think that one’s high school years the best years of our life, but in my case it was a roller coaster from hell; yet, I faced downfall after downfall.

It all started my freshman year at West High in Tracy when I got kicked out for fighting. My punishment was to be sent to a second opportunity school to redeem myself. Willow was known to be the school where they put all the “bad kids” when they got kicked out of their own district schools. Fourth graders, eight graders, and high school students all go to Willow and no one is allowed to wear any colors, just black, white, or grey to prevent gang fights.

After a month there, I faced a second downfall when I was expelled for being absent more than three days, the limit for absences allowed at the facility. As a consequence I was sent to Community School, filled with kids who are looked upon as lowlifes.

While attending Community, the blindness in suffered began to disappear, and I felt like I didn’t belong there, that I wasn’t being challenged, so I decided to take action by pleading the Tracy Unified School District to give me one last opportunity to change.

I was blessed with the opportunity attend George and Evelyn Stein High School. There I found myself again, the girl before my teenage years and uncertainty that kicked in, the one who was on the honor roll and made her family proud, instead of making them cry with disappointment.

Now, the dream of graduation became a reality and the urge to drop out no longer dominated my mind; I had finally changed.

The next thing I knew, I was standing on stage, speaking on behalf of my class as Valedictorian. I had graduated from high school and a new dream was born, to graduate from college with a degree in nursing.

I know that these dark days will always haunt me, but I will remind myself that I survived it, and that made me stronger as an individual. I will remember that dark times only last for a bit and that will eventually make the light brighter.

icen que uno debe caminar por la bruma para ver la importancia y valor de la luz. Mi peregrinaje por la secundaria me mostró cuán cierto es. Mucha gente cree que sus años en la prepa son los mejores que vive uno, pero los míos fueron un viaje del infierno, un trancazo tras otro.

Todo comenzó en mi primer año de secundaria en West High de Tracy, de donde fui expulsada por riñas. Mi castigo fue ser enviada a una escuela “de segunda oportunidad” donde corregirme. Willow tenía fama de ser donde iban a parar todos los malosos expulsados de sus respectivos distritos escolares. Estudiantes de cuarto, octavo grado, de secundaria, todos van a Willow y, para evitar riñas pandilleras, no se les permite vestir color, solo blanco, negro o gris.

Luego de un mes allí me di mi segundo encontrón cuando fui expulsada por ausentarme más de tres días —el límite que se permitía en esa institución. Como resultado fui remitida a la Escuela Comunitaria, llena de chicos a quienes se les considera indeseables.

Mientras asistía a la Comunitaria, la ceguera en la que vivía comenzó a disiparse y empecé a sentir que yo no era de ese lugar, que ahí no se esperaba nada de mí, por lo que decidí hacer algo y le rogué al Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tracy que me dieran una última oportunidad para cambiar. Fui bendecida con la posibilidad de asistir a la Secundaria George and Evelyn Stein. Allí me reencontré con esa niña preadolescente, esa de antes que me llenara de incertidumbre, esa que estaba en la lista de honor y que enorgullecía a su familia en vez de hacerles llorar desilusionados.

Ahora, el sueño de la graduación se convertía en realidad y la gana de dejar los estudios ya no dominaba mis pensamientos; por fin había cambiado. Repentinamente me encontré sobre el escenario, hablando a nombre de mis compañeros como la Primera de la Promoción.

Me había graduado de la secundaria y nacía un nuevo sueño, graduarme con un título universitario en enfermería.

Sé que aquellos negros días me penarán de por vida pero me recordarán que sobreviví, y que me hicieron una persona más fuerte.

Are you financially set up for your future?

Will the Rainy Day Fund survive 2014?

You can summarize Governor Jerry Brown’s 2014 vision for California in one word—prudence. It was the theme of his State of the State Address and the thesis for his proposed budget and Rainy Day Fund reserve. However, prudence and the proposed $1.6 billion Rainy Day Fund will face a year of extraordinary challenges.

To start, California is experiencing its driest recorded year in its history. This State of Emergency, declared by the Governor last month, has and will continue to impact the state’s economic prospects. In the nearterm, plans to promote conservation, clean up groundwater, develop more water storage, and fund local water projects will be costly, yet necessary, investments.

In the long-term, the effects of extended drought will strain our economy by affecting one of our most important sectors: agriculture. As the number one state in agricultural production a lot hangs in the balance for California’s economy when it comes to water.

The latest Department of Water Resources measurements show the state’s snowpack at 12% of normal. If drought persists through the spring, the anemic Sierra snowpack will yield very little to help fill our creeks, rivers, and reservoirs that are so crucial to keeping farmland production afloat. If the state’s agricultural production atrophies, the loss to the economy will put this year’s Rainy Day Fund at risk, and perhaps even the prospects of future reserves in question.

However, the Rainy Day Fund is not only at odds with Mother Nature, but with national and state politics as well. In January, Republican filibusters in the U.S. Senate stopped the passage of two separate bills for the extension of unemployment insurance benefits. One bill proposed an 11-month extension, the other a 3-month extension. Debates are ongoing and, if any compromise is reached, an extension is unlikely to last through the 2014-15 fiscal year.

This means that over 200,000 Californians that lost their benefits in December of 2013 will have to continue to survive without unemployment insurance. Because revenues fund the reserve and people need to spend money for the state to collect revenues, the plight of California’s unemployed will undermine the potential of a state reserve.

Last but not least, state politics will spur negotiations over the requisite size of the

SUSD launches Local Control Accountability Plan

S

USD has launched development of its spending plan to improve academic achievement for its students over the next eight years. As part of Governor Brown’s new spending formula for state funds, SUSD will be given some flexibility to focus on programs that best serve low income, English language learner and foster youth.

This is an opportunity for the District to fund a significant program to boost student achievement starting in 2014-15. SUSD is including parents and the community in its efforts to develop as strong a plan as possible for the students —an advisory committee, comprised of parents, students, teachers, union representatives, administrators, and others has been named and will be breaking into smaller groups to discuss the district’s priorities for next year.

Under the Governor’s plan, every district must develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) that addresses how the state funding will be used over the next eight years.

SUSD’s plan will first include programs for the next one to two years and then a longer term plan.

The District is expected to implement a proven program to help students, and it is already studying the significant success of the SIG schools, traditionally low performing schools that made bigger gains than the other schools last year. Funded by a special grant, those schools have more teacher collaboration and longer school days for students, even offer Saturday school.

SUSD held a public meeting in September announcing the plan and Superintendent Steve Lower has sent letters to all parents describing the process. There will be public outreach this spring and the Board of Education will receive a recommendation for the plan prior to budget consideration in May and June. The Board will vote on the plan when it approves its spending budget for next year.

l SUSD ha dado inicio al desarrollo de un plan de gastos para elevar el rendimiento académico de sus estudiantes por los próximos ocho años. Como parte de la nueva fórmula estatal para gastos del Gobernador Brown, al SUSD se le ha otorgado cierta flexibilidad para enfocarse en aquellos programas con mayor efecto en la juventud de bajos ingresos, de inglés como segunda lengua, o en custodia temporal.

Esta es una oportunidad para que el Distrito financie este importante programa para mejorar el nivel académico empezando este 2014-15. El SUSD ha incluido padres y vecinos en sus esfuerzos por desarrollar el plan más robusto posible para sus estudiantes —se ha be coordinating with the district on parent meetings planned for each zone. Presentations will be made at a number of community group meetings and at least one community forum will be scheduled. The District offers information about the LCAP on a special page on its website that includes a survey for parents and community members. Parents who do not have access to take the survey on a computer can do so at the District’s Madison Street office or at computers that will be provided at the parent meetings. SUSD Parents Don Graduation Caps ore than fifty SUSD parents, from schools throughout the district, participated in the first 2013-2014 Parent Academy Graduation ceremony at Hong Kingston Elementary School. The parents were honored for completing a six-week-long parents-as-educators training program offered by the SUSD’s Parent Empowerment Office, directed by Francisco Ortiz.

Parent Vanessa Elledge said it is important for her to prepare for her son Michael’s teenage years. “I just want to make sure that I’m aware of how to help him with the changes he needs to make,” she said. “Some of the things I know already because I am involved. But I (also) want to help promote parent involvement.”

Parent Involvement Coordinator Kennetha Stevens said the first program is part of an 18-week training that will help parents better understand how to help their students and become leaders in their education.

Attended by graduating parents, their families, SUSD Superintendent Steven Lowder, SUSD Board President Kathy Garcia and Board members Gloria Allen and David Varela —along with other school officials— the event highlighted the importance of parent participation in SUSD schools. Four more academies are planned this year with the same goals. There is no charge and translation is available for non English speakers.

ás de 50 padres del SUSD, de escuelas de todo el distrito, participaron en la primera ceremonia de graduación 2013-2014 de la Academia para Padres, realizada en la Primaria Hong Kingston.

Se distinguió a padres que completaron el programa de capacitación de seis semanas Padres-como-Educadores, ofrecido por la Oficina de Capacitación para Padres, y que dirige Francisco Ortiz.

La madre Vanessa Elledge habló cuán importante es para ella prepararse para la adolescencia de su hijo Michael. “Quiero asegurarme y saber qué hacer para ayudarle en los cambios que se le presentarán,”

dijo, “algunas de las cosas ya las sé porque participo siempre, pero también quiero ayudar a promover la participación de otros padres.”

La coordinadora de Participación de Padres Kennetha Stevens dijo que el primer programa es parte de una capacitación de 18 semanas que busca que los padres entiendan mejor como ayudar a sus estudiantes y convertirse en líderes en su educación.

78s. Ahí estaban. Esos negros discos de pizarra que protegían a los sonidos del pasado del olvido. Viejos discos. Gruesos y frágiles. Los tome cuidadosamente, uno a la vez, respetuosamente sacándole de la funda de papel café que vigilaba el secreto del artista. Despolvándolos individualmente, leí los nombres y recordé los sonidos que fueran mi niñez, que fueran las vidas de mis padres.

Mi papá fue un músico de jazz y un artista; mi mamá una historiadora de la música de su tiempo… ambos deben haber sido “hip” en sus días. No puede haber habido un tiempo… nunca… en el que no se escucharan esos 78s en mi casa, excepto cuando mis padres tocaban el piano o trompeta ellos mismos. Les podía escuchar hablar del corazón, la innovación, el alma, ciertos acordes, composición de “licks (series de notas)”… sobre la “historia” de esa música, la historia de las bandas, la historia.

Al sacar la caratula de… Billie Holiday… “Strange Fruit (Extraña Fruta)” recordé la primera vez que la escuché. Era pequeño. Era una canción triste… era todo lo que sabía. Su voz era dolorida. Linda pero dolorida.

Años más tarde, cuando ya podía entender, ese sonido rasposo, casi arenoso llenaba la casa y recuerdo que comenté a mamá cuan triste sonaba su voz… Billie Holiday… “Strange Fruit”. Nos sentamos en el piso de nuestra sala… en ese duro piso de madera de veta profunda… y ella me dijo la historia. No se trataba de una fruta. Levantó la aguja al acabar la canción y la volvió a poner, y volvió a poner. Escuchamos la letra.

Lloré.

Se me hace trágico que hace más de 60 años, cuando un maestro llamado Abel Meeropol escribió “Strage Fruit” como poema, y en 1939 cuando Billie Holiday lo cantó, tan triste, tan llena de dolor… que pareciera empezaban a cambiar las cosas… pero en realidad no. “…Con libertad y justicia para todos…” queda dando vueltas cuando vemos ciertos hechos. La demografía en las prisiones. En la pobreza. En la salud. En el abandono de los estudios.

Demografía innegablemente inaceptable.

Es el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana. Algunas cosas cambian. Otras no.

slowly pulled the drawer open; it was heavy and it drug on the wooden base making it seem more like a tug-of-war than anything else. 78’s. There they were. Those black discs made of shellac resin that protected the sounds of the past from obscurity. Old records. Thick and fragile. I gingerly picked them up one-at-a-time, respectfully sliding each from the brown paper sleeve that guarded the secret of the artist. Dusting each off, I read the names and remembered the sounds that were my childhood, that were my parents’ lives.

My dad was a jazz musician and artist; my mom a historian of the music of her time… both must have been “hip” in their day. There was never a time… ever… that those 78’s would not be playing in our house, except when my pops would be playing the piano or trumpet himself.

I could hear my parents talking about the heart, innovation, soul, chosen chords, phrasing of “licks”… about the “history” of the music, the history of the bands, the history.

As I slid a sleeve off… Billie Holiday…

“Strange Fruit.” I remember the first time I heard it. I was little. It was a sad song… that’s all I knew. Her voice hurt. Pretty… but hurt.

Years later, when I could start to understand, the scratchy, almost gritty sound was filling the house and I remember saying to my mom how sad her voice sounded… Billie Holiday…

“Strange Fruit.” We sat down on the floor in our living room… on the hard, deeply creased, wood floor… and she told me the story. It was not about fruit at all. She picked up the needle when the song finished, and started it again, and again, and again. We listened to the words.

I cried.

It is tragic to me how over 60 years, when a teacher named Abel Meeropol wrote “Strange Fruit” as a poem, and in 1939 when Billie Holiday sang it, so sad, so full of pain… that things appear to change… but really don’t. “…With liberty and justice for all…” becomes haunting when you look at simple facts.

Demographics of prisons. Demographics of poverty. Demographics of health. Demographics of dropouts.

Demographics undeniably unacceptable.

It is National African-American History month… some things change… some do not.

Honor musicians shine at Concert M

usic was in the air on January 11 at the San Joaquin County High School Honors Concert for Band, Choir and Orchestra held at Stockton’s Delta College in Atherton Auditorium. More than 240 students from 21 area High Schools representing eight districts took part in this annual event. Students were selected to participate during auditions held last fall; any high school student enrolled in a school-sponsored band, choir or orchestra could participate. Selected were the best in the area to work with guest conductors.

This year’s Concert was dedicated to Dr. Mick Founts, San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools in appreciation for his continued support of the arts. Dr. Founts is retiring in December after 23 years at SJCOE. This year’s guest conductor for band, Dr. Eric Hammer, teaches at University of the Pacific in Stockton. His engaging teaching style encouraged the students to reach to new heights of musical abilities, highly praised the by the over 1,000 people in attendance.

The 2014 Honor Choir students had the opportunity to study under Dr. Daniel Afonso of CSU Stanislaus. The 108 choir students entertained the audience with their five selections; the choir also received a warm reception for their hard work and devotion. This was the third year that Honor Band and Choir were joined by an Honor Orchestra. The 33 members for 2014 were conducted by Thomas Derthick, director of the Central Valley Youth Symphony; their performance showed the 16 Joaquín FEBRUARY 2014

abía música en el aire ese 11 de enero en el Concierto para Bandas, Coros y Orquestas de Honor de secundarias del Condado San Joaquín, celebrado en el Auditorio Atherton de Delta College. Más de 240 estudiantes de 21 preparatorias, representando ocho distritos, tomaron parte en este evento anual. Los estudiantes fueron seleccionados a través de audiciones realizadas el pasado otoño y cualquiera inscrito en una banda, coro u orquesta de la escuela podía participar. El proceso de audición selecciona a los mejores del área para trabajar con conductores invitados.

El Concierto de este año fue dedicado al Dr. Mick Founts, superintendente de escuelas del Condado San Joaquín en agradecimiento y aprecio por su continuo respaldo a las artes. El Dr. Founts se jubilará en diciembre luego de 37 años en la educación, 23 de ellos en la SJCOE. El conductor de banda invitado de este año, Dr. Eric Hammer, enseña en la Universidad del Pacífico en Stockton. Su estilo de enseñanza motivó a los estudiantes a llevar su talento musical a nuevos horizontes, recibiendo logrando una tremenda acogida entre

los más de un millar de asistentes. Los estudiantes del Coro de Honor del 2014 tuvieron la oportunidad de trabajar bajo el Dr. Daniel Afonso de la Universidad Estatal de California en Stanislaus. Los 108 estudiantes de coro deleitaron a la audiencia con cinco selecciones; el coro recibió también una calurosa recepción por su empeño y entrega. Este fue el tercer año en el que la Banda y Coro de Honor tocó junto a la Orquesta de Honor. Subrayando Underscoring the el tema de la issue of Undermatching Disparidad A C

omo candidata a un doctorado, estoy muy interesada en estudiar el concepto de “undermatching (subestimación o disparidad de capacidad)” En términos generales, esta disparidad ocurre cuando un estudiante sobresaliente —cualificado y de alto rendimiento— perteneciente a un grupo demográfico en particular (de bajo ingreso, históricamente marginado) se abstiene de postular a universidades de élite donde probablemente hubiese sido aceptado como alumno.

El parámetro para catalogar a un estudiante “cualificado” y “de alto rendimiento” se basa en su promedio de calificaciones, rango entre sus compañeros, notas que obtiene en pruebas y otros medios tradicionales de evaluación.

Ciertamente que estudiantes con este tipo de perfil académico no solo serían aceptados sino invitados por las Ivy League y otras universidades privadas del más alto prestigio como Stanford y el MIT. Pero para eso primero deben postular… y ahí es donde está el detalle.

Esta disparidad me preocupa por el desproporcionado efecto que tiene entre estudiantes minoritarios o de bajo nivel socioeconómico, como ver todos los beneficios sociales, económicos y sicológicos que pierden cuando se les coloca en una institución menos exigente. Entre las inmensas ventajas que sin darse cuenta dejan ir se incluyen acceso a investigación de renombre, rigurosos planes de estudio, conexiones, avance profesional, subir de nivel social, mejor probabilidad de graduación, beneficios económicos, y la posibilidad de mezclarse con compañeros que comparten similares intereses y conocimiento. Y, generalmente, se pierden un viaje con todo pagado.

Las ventajas en esto no son nada despreciables.

Broadly speaking, “Undermatching” occurs when a highly qualified, highperforming student from QuetzalMama a particular demographic Roxanne Ocampo (low-income, historically San Marcos, CA underrepresented) opts out of applying to selective four-year colleges where they would have most likely gained admission. The benchmark for identifying “highly qualified” and “high performing” is qualified through Grade Point Average (GPA), class rank, test scores, and other traditional academic criteria. Students with this type of academic profile would certainly be recruited and highly sought after by Ivies and top tier private colleges like Stanford and MIT. But, they must first apply. Therein lies the problem.

Undermatching concerns me because of the disproportionate effect it has on minority and low socioeconomic-status students, and seeing the compelling social, financial, and psychological benefits that they forgo when they undermatch at a less selective institution. Tremendous gains they unwittingly cede include renowned research, rigorous curriculum, networking opportunities, career advancement, social mobility, enhanced graduation success, financial benefits, and the ability to engage in dialogue with peers who share their intellectual curiosity and abilities. And, they typically cede a f ullride. The advantages here are hardly trivial. The mamá in me wants to k n o ck o n t h e i r door and say, “Mija/o, we ne e d t o t a l k!”

In addition, undermatching concerns me because its impact extends beyond the individual

– to intergenerational effects and to the greater community via the potential role-modeling and mentorship affect.

Yes – for the average student, a typical university experience is sufficient. However, these kids are not average. Not only are they outperforming their peers, but they have done so at a compounded rate due to the obstacles they’ve overcome along the way. It seems unethical our society would permit these outliers to filter through the sieve of college admissions.

I say, “Don’t get me started” because when I began researching the topic, one thing became clear: There seems to be two camps with polarizing views on this topic. One group – the champions— strive to eradicate undermatching. They share a sophisticated understanding of the complex factors surrounding this phenomenon and are often on the front lines of this issue. They have firsthand experience and can authentically speak to how and why being appropriately matched impacts the individual, families, communities, and academic institutions. In addition to the front-liners, there is also a subset of champions (myself included) who have witnessed this through family, research or organizations who serve disadvantaged, high-achieving students. We advocate for eradicating undermatching because we know the significance of students being paired with an academic institution aligned with their talents and abilities.

This camp believes undermatching impacts too few among the community, and therefore eats up too much time and resou rces… Why should we focus on this nu me r ic a l ly i n s ig n i f i c a n t group, at the expense of all students? To continued on next page

them, either we help all students, or we only help a tiny population. We can and should help both groups. We can focus on the overall goal of getting most students to college and helping undermatched ones reach their academic potential. In fact, this simple-minded reaction reminds me of the arguments by opponents of the 1960’s Women’s Liberation Movement, who argued that the number of women that could benefit by breaking the glass ceiling was in fact numerically insignificant. However, we cannot argue that efforts to shatter those barriers did not subsequently benefit a future mass of females —including my mom, myself and my daughter.

Yep. Undermatching students are a small number, but similar to the women’s movement, that number will grow. And, it will grow in cycles and compound each generation. By moving a small number of our students into the most selective colleges, we are planting the seed for future generations of Latino superstars.

As I begin my research journey, I will remain focused on how undermatching impacts low-income Latino students, and the possible interventions that may successfully eradicate this phenomenon. Next January, I will write a follow-up article to share what I’ve learned as I reach the one year mark in my doctoral research. I am hopeful and skeptical, passionate yet grounded, but —most of all— curious.

Yo digo, “No me provoquen” porque cuando empecé a estudiar el tema, hubo algo que era claro: hay dos grupos con posiciones opuestas sobre esto. Uno —los campeones— luchan por erradicar esta disparidad. Comparten un sofisticado entendimiento de los complejos factores que rodean este fenómeno y generalmente están en la primera fila en el tema. Poseen experiencia de primera mano y pueden hablar con autoridad cómo y porqué el estudiar a su nivel impacta al individuo, la familia, comunidad e instituciones académicas.

Luchamos por erradicar la disparidad porque sabemos lo importante que es que un estudiante vaya a una institución que esté a la par de su talento y capacidad.

El otro campo cree que esta disparidad afecta a demasiado pocos dentro de la comunidad y, como resultado, ocupa demasiado tiempo y recursos… ¿Por qué debemos enfocarnos en este numéricamente insignificante grupo descuidando a todo el resto del estudiantado? Para ellos, o ayudamos a todos los estudiantes o solo a un pequeño grupo. Podemos y debemos ayudar a ambos grupos: a que entren a la universidad la mayor cantidad de estudiantes posible, y a que los sobresalientes alcancen su potencial académico. De hecho, esta reacción simplista me recuerda los argumentos de quienes se oponían al Movimiento de Liberación Femenina de los 1960s, quienes argüían que el número de mujeres que se podían beneficiar rompiendo las barreras existentes era numéricamente ínfimo. No obstante nadie podría ahora negar que los esfuerzos por sobrepasar dichas barreras benefició a toda una futura masa de mujeres —incluyendo a mi mamá, a mí y a mi hija.

Sip. Estudiantes sobresalientes que bajan la mira universitaria son pocos pero, como pasó con el movimiento femenino, crecerán en número. Y crecerán en ciclos y con cada generación. Al elevar a un pequeño grupo de nuestros estudiantes a las universidades más selectivas, plantamos la semilla para futuras generaciones de superestrellas latinas.

En mi investigación me enfocaré en cómo esta disparidad afecta al estudiante latino de recursos limitados y posibles intervenciones que busquen erradicar este fenómeno. El próximo enero escribiré un artículo de seguimiento donde les compartiré lo aprendido al cumplir un año de investigación doctoral. Inflexible por su propio bien E scribir ha sido siempre importante para mí. Cuando empecé a enseñar Inglés universitario quedé perplejo ante la penosa redacción y lectura de la mitad de mis estudiantes ¿Cómo habían llegado hasta la educación superior? me preguntaba. No obstante, creí que podía cambiar las cosas; les iba a enseñar a amar lo que se habían acostumbrado a odiar: ¡escribir composiciones!

Pero evaluar el trabajo de mis estudiantes era deprimente. Comencé a maldecir el día que tenía que calificar composiciones. Los estudiantes se paseaban nerviosos, las caras llenas de ansiedad, incluso terror. Desde temprano había decidido no usar tinta roja sino azul, esperando que mis “correcciones” no les afectaran tanto. No resultó.

“Alumnos, si no les quisiera, ni siquiera me molestaría en escribirles comentarios a sus textos. Simplemente se los devolvería y dejaría que ustedes adivinasen el porqué de la calificación que recibieron. Estas son mis notas de amor para ustedes.” “¡Pero trabajé tanto!” “¡Creí que lo había hecho bien!” “¡Nunca había sacado una C antes!” Muchas veces me tomaba 10 minutos calmarlos para poder empezar la clase del día. Pronto empecé a entregarles sus composiciones al final del periodo para no tener que enfrentar su inevitable frustración. Terminaba la clase invitándoles a verme durante mis horas de oficina para analizar los comentarios en forma individual. Pocos aprovecharon mi oferta.

En cada sección siempre había 4 o 5 que no traían su tarea. Les dejaba pasar a la primera pero, a la segunda, les pedía verme después de clase o en mi oficina. Les ofrecía la oportunidad de entregar uno como “tardío”.

A la tercera vez les aconsejaba dejar la clase a riesgo de reprobarla por mala nota.

Cuando Elena no entregó su segunda composición le advertí que podría reprobar el curso. Estremecida y —después de una letanía de escusas— prometió entregarlo en el periodo subsiguiente. Cumplió, pero al leer su trabajo me espanté de su redacción de 6º grado.

Su ortografía, gramática… atroz. La llamé a mi oficina. “Elena, estás tan atrasada en tus escritos que honestamente no veo cómo vas a pasar este curso. Mi consejo es que dejes la clase, tomes un curso de redacción más básico

Love Notes from a Tough Love Teacher W

riting has always been important to me. Once I began teaching college English, I was shocked at the disastrous writing and reading skills of half of my students. How had they gotten into college?

I wondered. Yet, I believed Richard Ríos I could make a difference; Stockton, CA I would teach them to love what they had grown to hate: writing essays!

But grading my students’ work was daunting. I began to dread the day I returned the graded papers. Students fidgeted, their faces wracked with anxiety, even terror. I had resolved early on not to mark them up with “red ink”, so I used blue ink, hoping my “correc-

tions” wouldn’t hurt as much. It didn’t work.

“Class, if I didn’t love you, I wouldn’t even bother to write comments on your papers. I would just hand them back and let you figure out why you got the grade you did. I know it hurts but take time to read my comments and you’ll see that many are just suggestions on how to write a better sentences, better papers, and not just grammar errors you’ve made.

These are my love notes to you.”

“But I worked hard on this paper!” “I thought I did good!” “I’ve never gotten a C on any paper before!” Often, it took 10 minutes to quiet them down so I could begin the day’s lesson. Soon, I began handing back their essays at the end of the period so I wouldn’t have to face their obvious disappointments. I ended that period by inviting them to see me

Dos semestres más tarde, camino de mi oficina, escuché, “¡Sr. Ríos! ¡Sr. Ríos!” ¡Era Elena! Temí lo que se venía. Pero no, me dio la mano. “¡Hice lo que me dijo, Sr. Ríos! Tomé dos clases de redacción correctiva y este semestre estoy tomando Inglés 1A de nuevo ¡y haciendo trabajo de nivel B! Quiero darle las gracias. De todos los maestros que tuve, nunca uno me dijo que no podía escribir. Simplemente me pasaban. Creí que estaba bien.

Usted fue el único.”

Me sentí bien por dentro. Había hecho lo que tenía que hacer.

during my office hours, so I could go over the comments with them individually. Few ever took up my offer.

In each section, there were always 4-5 who failed to turn in a paper. I let them slide on the first essay, but once they failed to turn in a second one, I would ask to see them after class or in my office. I offered them the opportunity of turning in one of the two as a “late” paper.

After the failure to turn in a third paper, I would advise them to consider “dropping” the course rather than risk a failing grade.

When Elena failed to turn in the second paper, I told her she could fail the class. She was shaken and after a litany of excuses, promised she would turn it in next period.

She complied, but after reading her paper, I was shocked to see a 6th grade level of writing. Her spelling, the grammar, was atrocious.

I called her to my office. “Elena, you are so far behind in your writing that honestly I can’t see how you will be able to pass this course. My advice to you is to drop it, and take a lower level writing class for at least one semester and then take this course again. You can take it from me or another instructor if you feel more comfortable.”

She was devastated. Tears welled in her eyes. “Do I have to drop? I promise I will work harder if you give me a chance.” “O.K, but I can’t even promise you a passing grade in this class. It’s a transferable course, so If you fail it, you’ll have to take it again.” “Do I have to drop now? I’m learning so much in your class.”

I hesitated. “No, you can wait until the drop deadline”, which was still a couple of months away, “and drop then?” Even though the college discouraged this practice, we secretly agreed.

I felt badly. Why had I been so mean to her? Why was I so strict? I had passed other students, I knew didn’t deserve it. Why not her? I got no joy out of failing any of my students. Elena stayed until the drop date, and then dropped as per our agreement.

Two semesters later, on the way to my office I heard “Mr. Rios! Mr. Rios!” It was Elena! I dreaded what was coming. Instead, she reached out to shake my hand. “I did what you told me, Mr. Rios! I took two remedial writing classes and this semester I’m taking English 1A again and doing B work! I want to thank you.

Of all the teachers I’ve had, no one ever told me I couldn’t write. They just passed me along. I thought I was doing fine. You’re the only one.”

I felt good inside. I had done my job.

A Few Thoughts Regarding True Immigration Reform

T

oday I read the Republican controlled house is submitting their proposal to legislate a comprehensive immigration reform package.

They are preparing to do this ‘piece meal’, which flies in the face of an already voted-upon package adopted by the United States Senate.

Speaker Boehner who is trying to save his role as speaker, in my opinion, is convinced the Senate plan is acceptable and correct. Flawed as it may be, it is a workable plan which was developed by responsible individuals who know we need a base to begin our work.

Let us begin by placing ourselves in the shoes of an undocumented individual who truly wants to achieve the ‘American Dream’.

Would we dare invest any of our capital in a business venture that could or would be taken away without due process? The answer is an absolute NO. On the flip side, if an undocumented person knew his/her investment would add not only to their personal economic status, but also add to the economy, and be a safe investment without fear of reprisal and deportation, would they invest?

The answer is an unequivocal YES! We need to set all prejudices aside and approach this issue with a steady hand on the helm of compassion and true patriotism. To start, the terms “Illegal’ or “Alien” must be removed from our vocabulary. Are any of us in God’s creation ‘illegal’? Are we an ‘illegal’ drug? Are we an ‘alien’ being?

I might agree to the terms ‘Undocumented’ or ‘Foreign’, but the former, absolutely not!

I was born in 1939 in Springer, a very small town in New Mexico. I was delivered by a midwife and —because my parents were both Catholic— I am in possession of a Baptismal Certificate… never had a Birth Certificate. The US Army accepted my Bap-

tismal Certificate as proof of citizenship. What could I, as a US citizen, have expected if my parents were both atheists? How would I have proved my citizenship? Would I have been called ‘Undocumented’?

Can we imagine the impact we will experience as a nation when it comes to pass? How many of the undocumented will invest to open their own business, and hire employees who will spend and contribute to our society, not only with capital, but sweat and equity?

Our nation’s roadways will become safer as they will now be allowed to drive, and, as a condition, be required to obtain automobile insurance. Small as it may seem, purchasing insurance adds to our nation’s economy.

This is but a small step in becoming part of the American Dream. The question remains, how do we as ‘Legals’, contribute to realization of their Dream?

Observaciones Sobre Una Verdadera Reforma Inmigratoria

Hoy leo que la Cámara de Representantes, controlada por los republicanos, somete su paquete de propuestas sobre una total reforma inmigratoria. Se preparan a hacerlo ‘por partes’, lo que rompe totalmente con la propuesta

ya aprobada por el Senado de los EEUU. En mi opinión el vocero Boehner —quien intenta mantenerse en ese puesto—está convencido que el plan del Senado es correcto y aceptable. Imperfecto y todo, es un plan práctico desarrollado por individuos responsables quienes saben que necesitamos una base para empezar nuestra tarea.

Empecemos por ponernos en los zapatos de un indocumentado quien realmente quiere alcanzar el “Sueño Americano.” ¿Nos atreveríamos a invertir algo de nuestro capital en un negocio que nos pudiesen quitar de las manos sin recurso alguno? La respuesta es un terminante NO. Por otro lado, si un indocumentado supiera que su inversión no solo podría mejorar su nivel económico personal, sino también el de la economía, y fuera una inversión segura sin temor a represalia o deportación ¿invertiría? ¡La respuesta es un indudable SÍ!

Necesitamos poner todos los prejuicios de lado y abordar este tema sin que nos tiemble la mano, en aras de la compasión y verdadero patriotismo. Para empezar, el término ‘ilegal’ o ‘alien (extraño)’ debe eliminarse de nuestro vocabulario. ¿Hay alguien ‘ilegal’ entre quienes creó Dios? ¿Somos una sustancia ‘ilegal’? ¿Un ser ‘extraño’?

Puedo aceptar “incodumentado” o “extranjero” pero ¿lo anterior? ¡Absolutamente NO! Nací en 1939 en Springer, un minúsculo pueblo en Nuevo México. Me trajo al mundo una partera y —dado que mis padres eran ambos católicos— me hice de un Certificado de Bautismo… nunca tuve un Certificado de Nacimiento. El Ejército de los EEUU aceptó mi Certificado de Bautismo como prueba de ciudadanía. ¿Y si mis padres hubiesen sido ambos ateos… Cómo hubiese probado mi ciudadanía? ¿Me hubiesen calificado de ‘indocumentado’? ¿Soy por eso ‘extranjero’?

Pero por ahora, el tema es una genuina reforma inmigratoria. ¿Pueden imaginar el impacto que experimentaremos como nación cuando pase? ¿Cuántos indocumentados invertirán en abrir sus propios negocios, contratar empleados que gasten y contribuyan a la sociedad, no solo con capital, sino con sudor y plusvalía?

Los caminos de nuestra nación serán más seguros porque se les permitirá manejar y, como condición, deberán adquirir seguro de automóvil. Aunque suene a poco, comprar seguro aporta a la economía del país.

Este no es sino un pequeño paso en ser parte del Sueño Americano. La pregunta continúa ¿Cómo nosotros, los ‘legales’ contribuimos a la realización de su Sueño?

Middle School Malaise “Y

ou sure do move your arms a lot when you talk,” Mr. Roundell said, interrupting. I was telling him that Missy Baker had been tripped by a group of boys on the black top. She fell.

“Are you sure she didn’t just fall?” he asked looking down at me, his head blanking out the sun. “Missy falls a lot,” he continued.

“No, I’m pretty sure she didn’t,” I said, pointing at the boys who Mr. Roundell had stopped but didn’t bother talking to. “She was running from the ball wall, and they were watching her, and he,” I said, waving my arms and pointing again, “moved right in front of her and sort of put his foot out.”

“What are you Italian?” he said laughing as he said it.

I could feel my face flush red. I forced myself to speak. “No, I’m not Italian; I’m Mexican,” I said. I regretted those words as soon as they came out of my mouth.

“Oh, yeah, Mexican,” he said, smiling as he turned away to scan the yard.

Speechless, I stood and stared at the black top which spread out all around me in all directions, hard, and rough, and hot.

Everyone got to know Mr. Roundell right away because he was a yard duty teacher, tall, and strict, and really mean to certain students.

But really, all the middle school grade teachers were mean. It was a shock to the system after coming from the lower grades -- Mr Roundell and his mean-spirited propaganda laden social studies lessons, Ms. Martz who never smiled even when we discussed her favorite books in English, and Mrs. Casserly who talked as much about her husband, who later dumped her, as she did multiplying and dividing fractions.

Housed on the elementary school campus, the middle school classes were taught on a block schedule by teachers who seemed to believe it was their job to toughen us up for high school.

I had Mr. Roundell for homeroom in seventh grade where I noticed that he excelled at being cruel with a smile on his face. While he managed to humiliate me a couple of more times before I graduated from Summerville Elementary, I hardened to his tactics. Mrs. Casserly was strict too, and she was moody, but always a tad nicer to those who were already good in math. I wasn’t one of those students.

Mrs. Casserly wore skirts to cover her wide hips, except on Fridays when she wore jeans and was always in a rush, always trying to fit the long math lesson into the little time she had. But she was never in too much of a hurry to tell us a cute story about Mr. Casserly, like how their initials were AC/DC, electricity, not the rock band, AC for Anna Casserly and DC for David Casserly. She must have been a newlywed even though she didn’t look like one.

It was early in seventh grade, alone at my desk with a pencil and paper. Being slow at multiplication facts was discouraging, but I at least understood the concept. I couldn’t keep up at all when we got to multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals. I could almost feel my brain shutting down.

I tried paying very close attention to everything that she wrote on the board and raising my hand and asking questions, though probably not enough. continued on next page

ú sí bates los brazos para hablar,” dijo el Sr. Roundell, interrumpiéndome. Le estaba contando como un grupo de chicos le había hecho una zancadilla a Missy Baker en el asfalto. Había caído. “¿Estás segura que no se cayó sola?” preguntó mirándome hacia abajo, como ido, “Missy está siempre cayéndose” continuó.

“No, estoy segura que no,” dije apuntando a los chicos que el Sr. Roundell había detenido pero no se molesto en regañar, “ella iba corriendo desde el frontón y ellos le estaban echando el ojo y él,” dije batiendo los brazos y apuntando nuevamente, “se le puso delante y como que le puso el pie a la pasada.”

“Y tú ¿que eres italiana?” dijo riendo al decirlo.

Podía sentir que me ponía colorada. “No. No soy italiana. Soy mexicana,” dije. Me arrepentí de mis palabras apenas me salieron de la boca.

“Oh, sí, mexicana” dijo sonriendo al tiempo que se alejaba a supervisar el patio.

Sin palabras, me quedé parada mirando fijamente al asfalto que me rodeaba y extendía en todas direcciones, duro, áspero, caliente.

Todos conocíamos temprano al Sr. Roundell porque era el maestro de turno en el patio, alto, y estricto, y muy cruel con ciertos estudiantes.

Pero, la verdad, todos los maestros de escuela intermedia eran crueles.

Era un choque de sistema saliendo de los grados inferiores —el Sr. Roundell y sus tendenciosas lecciones de ciencias sociales, la Srta.

Martz quien jamás sonreía incluso cuando hablábamos de sus libros favoritos en clase de Inglés, y la Sra. Cassidy, que hablaba casi tanto de su marido —quien más tarde la abandonaría— como de multiplicar y dividir fracciones.

Albergados en las instalaciones de la escuela primaria, las clases de intermedia se daban en calendario de bloque por maestros que parecían creer que su tarea era hacernos fuertes para la preparatoria.

En séptimo tenía al Sr. Roundell de profesor jefe, y noté que se distinguía haciendo hacia sufrir con una sonrisa en la cara. Aunque logró humillarme un par de veces más antes de graduarme de la Primaria Summerville, logré endurecerme a sus tácticas. La Sra. Casserly era estricta también, y temperamental, pero un poquito mejor con aquellos que eran buenos para las matemáticas.

Yo no era una de esos últimos.

La Sra. I tried calling on her for help when the others were working problems.

She’d come to my desk and answer my question in a whisper that I could never quite hear, as quickly as she could, then rush back to the board to see who had come up with the right answer. She’d scrunch up her face whenever I asked the same question more than once or when I asked her to repeat something that she had just explained.

By the end of September, I was totally lost.

I had always been stronger in reading and writing, but elementary school math had been fun too. My third grade teacher Mrs. Shnauble had taught math using blocks, and puzzles, and boards with nails and rubber bands. She also had a loft in her classroom, and we were allowed to take the puzzles and boards with nails, or books, where it was comfortable.

Mrs. Casserly had tried checking in with me when she noticed that I was getting behind, but eventually she stopped checking in on me at all. I would sometimes find the courage to ask a question because I knew that’s what I was supposed to do, and because I wondered if she noticed I was still in the room, but usually I Michelle just faced the board while she lectured and preCruz Gonzáles Las Positas College tended that I was following along. Before long, I began thinking that I deserved to be ignored, and like Mr. Roundell had pointed out, that my being Mexican had something to with it.

Era principios del séptimo grado, sola en mi banco con lápiz y papel. Ser mala para las multiplicaciones era deprimente, pero al menos entendía el concepto. No podía seguir el hilo cuando se trataba de multiplicar y dividir fracciones y decimales. Podía sentir mi cerebro cerrándose de un portazo. Trataba de prestar atención a todo lo que escribía en el pizarrón y levantaba mi mano para preguntar, aunque quizá no lo suficiente. Trataba de pedirle ayuda mientras el resto trabajaba en el problema. Venía hasta mi escritorio y me contestaba en un susurro que nunca lograba entender y, tan pronto podía, se regresaba adelante para ver quien había resuelto el problema. Ponía caras cuando fuera le hacia la misma pregunta más de una vez o cuando le pedía repetir algo que ya acababa de explicar.

Para fines de septiembre estaba totalmente perdida.

Siempre he sido más fuerte en lectura y redacción, pero la matemática de primaria había sido entretenida también. Mi maestra de tercero, Sra. Shnauble, había enseñado matemática usando bloques y rompecabezas y tableros con clavos y banditas elásticas. Tenía también un altillo en su salón, donde se nos permitía subir con los rompecabezas y tableros con clavos, o libros, donde era muy cómodo.

Al principio la Sra. Casserly trató de atenderme cuando vio que me rezagaba, pero eventualmente me abandonó totalmente. A veces me armaba de valor para preguntar algo porque se suponía era lo que tenía que hacer, y porque me preguntaba si se daba cuenta que todavía estaba en su clase, pero usualmente me respondía mirando al pizarrón pretendiendo que yo la seguía. Después de un tiempo temiendo su cara de enojo —y la mano, blanca de gis, en su cadera— dejé de preguntar y ella siguió dando su clase sin ayudarme ya más. En un corto tiempo comencé a pensar que me merecía ser ignorada y, como había ya indicado el Sr. Roundell, el ser mexicana tenía algo que ver con eso.

‘Traqueros’ E

n 1976 yo era orientador escolar en la Preparatoria Tracy cuando conocí a Harry Guzmán, maestro de español, entrenador tanto de fútbol americano como béisbol, y mentor. Recuerdo haber hablado con él y preguntarle, “¿de dónde tú, ese?” Nebraska, contestaría, ignorando el “ese”. ¿Nebraska? ¿Quién diablos puede venir de Nebraska? …¿y qué anda haciendo un mexicano por allá? Se supone que deben estar en Texas, California y otros estados del sudoeste, más familiares.

Yo era un retornado, veterano del Vietnam, pero también veterano del Movimiento Chicano. Harry se enfurecería conmigo cuando protestaba contra la guerra en Vietnam.

Harry estaba orgulloso, y con justicia, de su servicio militar como infante de marina de 1947 a 1952.

El libro “La Familia Domínguez: Un peregrinaje mexicoamericano” (ver Joaquín, Enero 2014) trataba esencialmente sobre los veteranos de la Segunda Guerra Erminio y Luis Sánchez y el desarrollo de los ferrocarriles en el norte de México. Este libro también contestó a mi pregunta sobre que hacía Guzmán en Nebraska.

En 1877 el presidente mexicano Porfirio Díaz decidió iniciar la construcción de una moderna red ferroviaria para México. Díaz tenía la esperanza tanto de atraer inversión extranjera como de lograr un mayor control sobre los estados norteños del país. No obstante y muy por el contrario, el nuevo ferrocarril facilitó que el peón pobre y el oprimido pudieran viajar muy lejos de su casa en busca de empleo, primero de Ciudad de México a Paso del Norte (hoy Ciudad Juárez), y luego a la seguridad y una mejor vida en los Estados Unidos.

La más importante ferrovía construida en esos años fue el Ferrocarril Central Mexicano, directa conexión entre la Ciudad de México y Paso del Norte. Un agresivo programa de implementación llevó —entre 1880 a 1884— a los rieles por 1,224 millas, avanzando por el Valle Central de México, atravesando Aguascalientes, Zacatecas y Chihuahua hasta alcanzar la frontera y la ciudad estadounidense

n 1976 I was a school counselor at Tracy High School when I met Harry Guzman, Spanish teacher, football and baseball coach and mentor. I remember speaking with Harry and asking him, “where you from ese?” Nebraska, he would reply, ignoring the “ese”. Nebraska? Who the h---! comes from Nebraska and —what are Mexicans doing there anyway? They are supposed to be in Texas, California and other more familiar Southwestern states.

Mi madre, Celia Murrieta Library Muñoz de Soto, es de un pequeño poblado en las afueras de El Paso llamado Isleta, y mi tía Grace Muñoz de Ayala es del ahora inexistente pueblo de Smelter, Texas.

En 1993, en su obra clásica Northward Bound: The Mexican Immigrant Experience in Ballad and Song (Hacia el Norte: La Experiencia Inmigrante Mexicana en Balada y Canción), María Herrera Sobek escribió “La completa historia de los miles de mexicanos que participaron en la construcción y mantenimiento de las ferrovías estadounidenses continúa a la vuelta está todavía por

The book “The Dominguez Family: a Mexican American Journey” (See Joaquin, January 2013) was mostly about World War 2 Veteranos Erminio and Luis Sanchez and the development of Railroads in northern Mexico.

This book also answered my question about what Mr. Guzman was doing in Nebraska.

In 1877, President Porfirio Díaz decided to initiate the construction of a modern railroad network for Mexico. Díaz had hoped to attract foreign investment and assert greater control over the northern states of the country.

However, quite the opposite happened, the new railroad network made it easier for poor and oppressed peons of Mexico to travel long distances from home in search of work, first from Mexico City up to Paso del Norte (today’s Ciudad Juarez) and then for safety and a better life, to the United States.

The most important railroad built at this time was the Mexican Central Railway, a direct line between Mexico City and Paso del Norte. An aggressive construction program from 1880 to 1884 brought this railroad up the Central Valley of Mexico —1,224 miles— through Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, and Chihuahua to the border and the U.S. city of EI Paso, Texas. Thus, the new railway began to draw thousands of Mexican workers north … and further north up to Nebraska.

As a matter of fact, my grandfather Rafael Muñoz “El General” was a Dorado de Francisco Villa and came from Jiménez, Chihuahua, Mexico. My mother Celia Muñoz de Soto, is from a small town outside of ElPaso named Isleta, and my tía Grace Muñoz de Ayala is from a now nonexistent town of Smelter, Texas.

In 1993, Maria Herrera-Sobek, in her classic work, Northward Bound, The Mexican Immigrant Experience in Ballad and Song wrote “A comprehensive continued on next page FEBRUARY 2014 Joaquín 23

history of the thousands of Mexicans who participated in the building and maintenance of railroads in the United States has yet to appear” (Pg. 34.)

Another interesting piece of information appears on pages 92 and 93 of Jeffrey Marcos Garcilazo’s Traqueros: Mexican railroad workers in the United States 1870 to 1930 (University of North Texas Press, 2012 where it notes “In March of 1908 about 250 traqueros (track workers) in Colton, California went on strike.”

The traqueros were a rugged hard working group of men who did the work others would not do for such low pay —hired because of their loyalty to the company, their willingness to work long hours without complaining and seeing a job through. These men tolerated the conditions to support their families; a tradition and work ethic they also carried into war.

As a Mexican and Chicano history buff I am continuously amazed at how much history about our people is ignored by public schools.

Our history and active participation in the development of this country is important to our children’s self- esteem development, we need purchase these books, read them and share their valued history with our young. ¡Que vivan los ‘traqueros’!

Los traqueros eran un grupo de hombres rudos que realizaban tareas otros no harían por tan modesto sueldo —contratados por su lealtad a la compañía, su voluntad de trabajar largas horas sin protestar hasta terminar lo asignado. Estos trabajadores toleraban esas condiciones con tal de proveer para sus familias; una tradición que extendieron al ir a la guerra.

Como mexicano y Chicano aficionado a la historia nunca dejo de sorprenderme cuanta historia de nuestra gente es ignorada por las escuelas públicas. Nuestra historia y activa participación en el desarrollo de este país es importantísimo para el desarrollo de la autoestima de nuestros niños, necesitamos comprar estos libros, leerlos y compartir su valiosa historia con nuestra juventud. ¡Que vivan los traqueros!

The Man from the South El hombre del Sur S itting under a palo verde tree, Don José caught sight of a man coming toward him on the railroad tracks, dragging his feet, seemingly exhausted from a long journey.

The traveler had on ragged clothes and wore a crumpled straw hat. From his shoulder hung a burlap bag with the hardened remnants of a loaf of bread. Don José stood up as the young man approached, signaling him with his hands to stop.

“Hey, you there! Where’re you from?

Where’re you going?” shouted the farmer, pausing for an answer. ‘’I’m from a country of beggars,” said the young man, smiling sadly. “I’m heading for wherever I can survive.”

“You look like you could do with some rest,” said the older man. “You’re welcome to stay the night, if you need to. I’ve got room.”

“You don’t mind company?”

“No one comes ‘round this way much anymore. It’s just my daughter and me.” The Stranger drew closer and raised the brim of his hat, revealing the sun burnt face of a man in his thirties. A crooked smile formed on his lips.

“To tell you the truth, I’d be more than happy to spend the night in your barn,” he said, his warm, dark eyes gleaming.

“Come on in,” said the farmer, extending his hand toward a small adobe house. “You must be hungry.”

The Stranger was a godsend, thought Don José. It was a miracle the man came down the tracks as he sat under the tree. No one came around anymore. Since his wife passed away and his other daughters had left home, life had gotten very lonely. He was old and wasn’t worried about living in the desert with no one around. He could do with just a

few hours now and then with the old timer who lived nearby. But he worried for his daughter.

She suffered mightily from the never-ending solitude. Though she never complained, her father knew she was wasting away inside.

“You’re in luck,” said Don José. “My daughter is a damned good cook, just like my late wife.

You’ll see. I bet you’ll be licking your fingers.”

“You don’t say. I’m glad to hear it, though I’m not fussy with food.”

“Her name’s Clotilde, my daughter. She’s still a young woman. If memory serves, she’s around twenty-five.” The farmer took off three or four years from Clotilde’s age.

“You don’t say. My name’s Nazor Amado Galindo, at your service.”

“I’m José Reinaldo Quiroga. Pleased to meet you,” said Don José. The two men shook hands. The stranger was hungry and tired and didn’t care much for the old man’s conversation but he nodded politely as Don José rambled on.

After greeting Clotilde, the men sat down at the table and Don José’s daughter, barely hiding her joy, prepared the evening meal.

She served flour tortillas with a bowl of bean soup and a beef guisado which Nazor amply praised as he licked his fingers.

“Didn’t I tell you? Didn’t I?” said Don José with a wide smile.

“What’s in the guisado’l” asked Nazor.

CIotilde smiled, embarrassed. Her father answered in her place. “They’re spices no one knows, except my daughter. She got all her cooking secrets from her mother, may she rest in peace.”

entado a la sombra de un palo verde, don José divisó a un hombre que venía por la vía del tren arrastrando los pies y dando muestras de agotamiento. El caminante llevaba una ropa muy vieja y sombrero de paja estropeado por el desgaste de los años. Del hombro le colgaba un costal burdo donde traía los restos de un pan duro.

El hombre mayor se entusiasmó al ver llegar al individuo y, con manifiesta intención, le hizo señas con la mano.

-Oiga, ¿de dónde viene? ¿A dónde va?lanzó sus preguntas y se quedó mirándolo, esperando una respuesta.

-De la miseria, señor. Voy a donde pueda seguir viviendo -dijo el caminante con harta naturalidad.

-A leguas se ve que viene agotado. Si no tiene prisa, quédese la noche. ¿Qué le parece?

Por aquí no pasa nadie.

-¿Se siente solo?

-Le digo que no pasa nadie. Somos únicamente mi hija y yo.

El forastero se acercó y se levantó el ala del sombrero, revelando el rostro tostado de un hombre en su treintena, de facciones regulares y ojos pestañudos. Sonrió ligeramente.

-Para decirle verdad, me muero de hambre y no me importaría dormir en el rancho, aunque fuera en el granero.

-Allá esta su casa-dijo el ranchero, señalando con el dedo índice una casita humilde hecha de ladrillo de adobe.

Don José se puso a pensar. Este hombre le caía del cielo. Era como un milagro, ya que nadie andaba por esos rumbos. Desde que murió su mujer y se fueron las otras hijas, to do se había vuelto soledad. EI estaba viejo con muchos años vividos, por lo que no se preocupaba por su persona, conformándose con unos momentos compartidos con el anciano que vivía a cinco leguas de ahí. Pero su hija, ella sí que sufría atrozmente. Nunca se quejaba, pero el padre sabía que por dentro se estaba pudriendo.

-Mire-dijo don José+-mi hija cocina rebien, igual que mi difunta esposa. Ya verá. Se va a chupar los dedos.

After the meal, Don José took out a bottle of aguardiente and poured a glass for the stranger and another one for his daughter.

“Just a small amount for Clotilde because she’s not used to drinking,” said Don José as he poured a drink for himself.

As the evening went on, Nazor and his hosts chatted comfortably about everything and nothing in particular. The stranger asked and answered questions, intent on pleasing his hosts, and as he spoke, he mingled the truth with lies and reality with fantasy. Just as the old man had thought, the alcohol had loosened the young peoples’ tongues. At this rate, he thought, they would talk most of the night by the light of the kerosene lamp. He decided to retire early so they could be alone.

“I think it’s about time I go to bed,” said Don José. “I’ve got a full day tomorrow.”

“Maybe I should be retiring for the night myself,” said Nazor. “I don’t want to keep anybody up. Just lead me to the barn.”

“Don’t go to bed on my account,” said Don José firmly. “Stay a while longer. Entertain my daughter. She’ll show you where you’ll sleep tonight.”

“Do you know the South well? asked Clotilde, turning to Nazar.

“Well, sure,” said Nazor with a faint smile.

“I was born in that wretched land.”

“Go ahead and tell my daughter about the South. I’m going to bed.”

“Don José took the last swig of aguardiente and went on to his room, pleased with his part in the day’s events. He hoped he had made his daughter happy. He knew Clotilde led a tedious life, always alone, with only the drudgery of the house chores, never a moment of diversion.

Damned luck! thought the farmer. Since the crisis struck they had had a tough time.

The train left and never returned; his neighbors, too, vanished; and the stores closed; those that once lived in the valley left for the cities, looking to survive. The settlements became ghost towns. People abandoned everything to go and starve to death somewhere else, thought Don José. His daughters, too, left the farm, following the lead of restless men, saying they didn’t want to die in the desert.

Don José made no attempt to stop his daughters. On the contrary, he was happy to see them go. In fact, he would have been pleased to see Clotilde leave with one of those men. But no one came for her. His daughter was too serious, too shy to bring attention to herself. She didn’t know how to catch a man’s interest. She had enough good looks, he thought, though he admitted she was not as pretty as his other daughters. Once they hit 26 Joaquín FEBRUARY 2014

puberty they opened up like sahuaro flowers.

The men came around like bees after honey.

But Clotilde wasn’t plain either, thought Don José. He truly believed his youngest daughter was an attractive woman.

Although CIotilde didn’t have every feminine attribute men sought, she had plenty, he thought. His daughter may have had small breasts, but she was well proportioned.

Though her hips were not as wide as those of his other daughters, Clotilde had strong, toned legs. Any good, God-fearing man-he thoughtwould be pleased with Clotilde. She did have a slight defect on her face, Don José admitted, a tiny bump at the base of her nose, as if the bone had grown more on one side. But it was almost invisible to the eye, unless one stared intently.

From his room Don José could hear Clotilde’s and Nazor’s muffled conversation.

Lying in his bed, he pondered the Stranger’s visit. The man seemed to have a kind face, he thought. He could see he was a hard-working person, one who had abandoned his home only to survive. However, he wondered what kind of a man he was. Don José was curious about his background. He planned on asking him questions the following day. Maybe he could probe to see what the Stranger thought about Clotilde. He was curious to know if she pleased him, though his laughter and body language seemed to indicate he like her.

The next day, Don José got up early and went out to feed the pigs in their pen, and on his way back to the house, he ran into Clotilde who was milking the cow under a mesquite tree.

“Good morning, Hija.”

“Good morning, Papa.”

“And Nazar?”

“He’s asleep in my sisters’ room.”

“Good. He must be exhausted,” said Don José, hoping to hear more from his daughter.

“How are you?”

“I’m fine. I wanted to milk the cow before it got hot. Later, I’ll check the chickens to see if they’ve laid any eggs ... for Nazar’s breakfast.”

Right, of course, thought Don José, for Nazar. What a strange name that was, thought again Don José, though once learned it was not easily forgotten.

Don José came into the house and found the Stranger standing in front of the kitchen table, drinking the coffee Clotilde had brewed.

“Good day,” Nazar said.

“How did you sleep?” asked Don José.

“Very well. The bed your daughter made for me was very comfortable.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” said Don José, looking intently at Nazar. “Go ahead and have a seat. I’m going to sit down as well.”

“Thanks. Although I can’t stay long. I want to get back on the road before the day

gets too hot.”

“Where are you heading to?” Señor Galindo?”

“Call me Nazar, please.”

“All right, Nazar. Where are you heading?”

“Don’t rightly know. But those train track should take me somewhere.” He stood up as he gestured toward the rails.

“Sit down, please,” said Don José firmly, standing up himself. “You’ve got to have something in your stomach. Clotilde will be here any moment with eggs and milk.”

“Caray! That sounds really good. I guess I wouldn’t mind eating something.” Nazar sat down and Don José followed. When Clotilde walked in with the eggs and milk, she found the two men fully engaged in conversation.

“I’m going to prepare chilaquiles for you,” she said heading for the stove, glancing furtively at Nazar.

After the meal, Nazar stood up and said, “Thank you, thank you so much for your kindness. I wish I could stay longer but I had better hit the road. It’s getting late.”

“What are you talking about?” said Don José. “You can’t go yet. We have a whole dinner planned in your honor-with chicharrones.

Don Casimiro, the old man down the road, is coming to meet you. Poor fellow. He’s lived alone now for quite a few years.”

“Stay another night, please,” said Clotilde with a timid smile on her lips. “We want to hear more of your stories.”

“You heard her, Senor Galindo. Stay a while longer. You aren’t in any hurry, are you?”

“You’re too kind. All right. But, please, call me Nazar.”

Later, Don José took Nazar for a stroll around the farm while Clotilde sat on the front porch humming a popular refrain.

“See all this land,” said he farmer, extending his arms. “People might think this is lifeless desert where nothing grows, but I want you to know it’s not true. The well has plenty of water, and with water, the earth is generous.

With my dear wife’s help, I used to grow corn, beans, tomatoes, squash and huge watermelons. That was before the crisis struck.” continues in the next issue

-Se llama Clotilde, mi hija. Todavía es joven. Si recuerdo bien, tiene veinte y cinco años cumplidos.

El ranchero le quitaba tres o cuatro años a la edad de Clotilde.

-No me diga. Yo soy Nazor Amado Galindo, para servir a usted.

Los dos hombres se estrecharon la mano.

El forastero no se interesaba gran cosa en la conversación del hombre mayor, pero disimulaba, siguiéndole la corriente.

Les sirvió tortillas de harina de su propia hechura, un platón de frijoles de la olla que mucho le gustaron a Nazor, y, como platillo principal, les presento un guisado de carne de res que deja al forastero chupándose los dedos.

-No le dije, no le dije-dijo don José. ¿Y qué le pone usted a este guisado? -pregunto el forastero.

La mujer sonrió, avergonzada. Su padre contestó por ella.

-Son condimentos que nadie conoce, a no ser mi hija. Heredó los secretos de cocina de mi mujer, que en paz descanse.

-Que descanse en la paz del Señor--dijo el comensal.

Después de la cena, don José sacó una botella de aguardiente y le sirvió un trago al forastero y otro a su hija.

-Sólo un poco para Clotilde porque no está acostumbrada -dijo don José, escanciándose, a su vez, una copa de alcohol.

Al poco rato, los tres se pusieron a hablar de todo y de nada. El forastero hizo y contestó preguntas, procurando halagar a sus anfitriones, y, al hacerlo, mezclo la verdad con la mentira y la realidad con la fantasía. EI alcohol, tal como lo había previsto el hombre mayor, aligeraba la lengua de los jóvenes. Así se quedarían varias horas platicando a la luz de la lámpara de queroseno, pensó don José. Él se retiraría pronto para no estorbarlos.

-Creo que yo ya me voy retirando-dijo don José-, Mañana tengo muchas tareas.

-Tal vez yo también me deba retirar -dijo Nazor-. Dígame donde está el granero.

-Nada de eso-dijo don José-. Quédese un rato más. Entretenga a mi hija. Ella le dirá donde dormirá.

-¿UstedsabecómoestodoporalláenelSur?-se atrevió a preguntar Clotilde con viva curiosidad.

-Pues, Sí. Soy de esa maldita tierra.

-Cuéntele, pues, a mi hija. Ella tiene mucha curiosidad. Yo me retiro.

Don José empino el último trago y se pasó a su dormitorio. Estaba satisfecho con su actuación, calculando que había hecho su parte para entretener a Clotilde. La pobre se moría de aburrimiento, siempre sola con los quehaceres de la casa, sin ninguna distracción. ¡Maldita suerte!, se dijo en sus adentros el ranchero. Desde la crisis la pasaban mal. Ya no había ferrocarril, ni gente, ni tiendas, ni nada que se pareciera a lo que hubo en otros tiempos.

Los pueblos más cercanos se despoblaron; la gente salió a ver si había mejor vida en las ciudades. Abandonaron todo para irse a morir de hambre en otra parte. Sus otras hijas también se fueron, acompañadas de hombres inquietos, diciendo que no querían morir en el desierto.

Don José no detuvo a las hijas; al contrario, le dio gusto de que buscaran la vida donde más les agradara.

De hecho, le habría gustado que algún hombre se hubiera llevado a Clotilde también.

Pero nadie se acercó. Su hija era demasiado corta; no tenía el coqueteo halagador de las otras. Y no era que fuera fea, se repetía en sus adentros don José. La verdad era que sus otras hijas, desde que entraron en la pubertad, se pusieron como flor de sahuaro. Hermosas... ¿quién lo negaría? Pero Clotilde tampoco era fea, no señor, se decía en sus adentros el ranchero. Tenía ojos bonitos, de un color como el de la miel. Don José, claro, lo vela todo con ojos de padre, pero le parecía que Clotilde no estaba mal como mujer.

La naturaleza no la había dotado de ciertos encantos femeninos (lo reconocía), pero ¿a quién se Ie concedía todo? Su hija tendría pechos pequeños, pero estaban bien formados, calculaba el ranchero. ¿ Y en cuanto a caderas?

Tal vez no se podían comparar con los contornos de sus otras hijas, pero ellas eran excepcionales. En cambio, las piernas, viéndolo bien, eran tan bonitas como las de sus hermanas.

Tenían una simetría y musculatura que asombraba. Don José estaba seguro que cualquier hombre decente se conformaría con Clotilde.

Ahora bien, era cierto que su hija tenía un defectillo en el rostro que don José tenía que reconocer: un nódulo en la base de la nariz, como si el huesito Ie hubiera crecido más de la cuenta. Pero casi no se notaba. En cambio, sus ojos, grandes y expresivos, eran impresionantes.

Desde su dormitorio podía oír el rumor de la conversación de los jóvenes. Acostado en la cama, reflexionaba sobre la llegada del forastero. El individuo parecía tener buena cara.

Se echaba de ver que era un hombre trabajador que dejaba el terruño por obligación, para sobrevivir. Pero, ¿Quién sería? ¿Y qué historia seria la suya? Tendría que averiguarlo al día siguiente. A lo mejor, también lo podría sondear con respecto a su hija. Tenía curiosidad por saber si le había caído bien, aunque por las risas y ademanes, parecía que no había duda en cuanto a eso.

Al día siguiente, don José se levantó muy temprano y salió a darles de comer a los cochinos que tenía en el corral, y, de regreso a casa, se encontró a Clotilde ordeñando la vaca debajo de un mezquite.

-Buenos días, hija.

-Buenos días, papá.

-¿Y el forastero?

-Duerme en el cuarto de las hermanas.

-Mejor. Ha de estar rendido. ¿Y tú?

-Yo estoy bien. Quise hacer esto antes que apretara el sol. Al rato veo si pusieron huevos las gallinas... para el desayuno de Nazor.

Si, si, para Nazor, se dijo en sus adentros el ranchero. Nazor, un nombrecito raro, pensó don José; raro pero que no se olvidaba fácilmente.

Entre en la casa y se encontró al forastero parado enfrente de la mesa de la cocina. Bebía el café que Clotilde había preparado.

-Buenos días -dijo Nazor.

-¿Cómo amaneció usted?-pregunto el ranchero.

-Bien, bien. La cama que me indico su hija está muy cómoda.

-Pues, siéntese.

-Gracias. No puedo dilatarme. Quería coger camino antes de que se pusiera muy caliente el día.

-¿Y a donde va usted, señor Galindo?

-Llámeme Nazor, por favor.

-Bueno, Nazor. ¿A dónde va?

-No sé. Esos rieles van a algún lugar.

-Siéntese. Usted tiene que llevar algo en el estómago. Clotilde viene ahora con unos huevos y leche recién ordeñada.

-Caray, a usted no puedo mentirle. Me caería muy bien comer algo.

Nazor se sentó y don José hizo lo mismo.

Cuando llegó Clotilde con la leche y los huevos, los dos hombres tenían una conversación cerrada.

-Ahora les preparo unos chilaquiles-les anunció la joven y se dirigió a la cocina, echándole una mirada furtiva al forastero.

Después del desayuno, Nazor se puso de pie y anunció: -Ahora sí, vale más que me ponga en camino. Les agradezco mucho su hospitalidad.

De verdad.

-¿Qué dice usted?-dijo don José- No se nos va todavía. Mire, teníamos pensado hacer chicharrones en su honra. Hasta vamos a invitar a don Casimiro, al ancianito de aquí a unas leguas, para que lo conozca. El pobre ya lleva muchos años solo.

-Es que yo...

-Quédese otra noche, por favor -interrumpió Clotilde, avergonzada-. Queremos oírlo contar sus historias.

-Ya la oyó, señor Galindo. Quédese un poco más. Al cabo, no tiene prisa, ¿verdad?

-Bueno. Está bien. Ustedes son muy amables. Pero ya sabe, llámeme Nazor, por favor.

Don José llevó al forastero a caminar por el rancho, dejando a Clotilde sentada en el portal de la casa.

-¿Ve todo esto?-dijo el ranchero-. Cualquiera diría que es un desierto estéril donde nada crece, pero quiero que sepa que no es así. Hay mucha agua en el pozo y con agua la tierra es generosa.

Antes la trabajaba mucho con la ayuda de mi mujer y teníamos milpa, frijoles, tomates, calabazas y hasta sandías. Eso fue antes de la crisis. contiúa en el próximo número
