Don’t Slash our Sash and Don’t Steal our Stole

A

few weeks ago, the issue of whether Latino students could wear symbolic Latino sashes at graduation commencements was raised.

Apparently, there was a departmental “vote” where faculty at Merrill F. West High School in Tracy Unified School District (TUSD) decided only certain programs would be allowed to wear regalia representing their respective groups. This vote meant Latino students could no longer wear their traditional “ethnic” sash at graduation commencement.

Stripping our students of the right to wear the traditional Latino sash cannot be enacted in an email notification. It cannot happen by a departmental vote. And, it cannot happen without an uprising by students, parents, and community folk. No sooner had the “Department Chair Decision” email been sent by the Principal of West High, local groups began rallying. The District’s Diversity & Equity Committee members began circulating emails, making phone calls, and calling for an explanation. Fortunately, we had TUSD Trustee Walter Gouveia, and Mercedes Silveira-Gouveia, Chair of the California Latino Leadership Association, advocating on behalf of our Latino students.

So who gets to wear the Chicano/Latino sashes at graduation? Apparently, lots of high schools allow their students to wear sashes. I did some research and found that nearly every public and private university in California allows to wear the traditional sash. The universities listed here, for example, host a commencement specifically for Latino students, • Stanford University Nuestra Grad • Univ. of Southern California Chicano/Latino Graduate Celebration • Claremont University Chicano/Latino Graduation • UC Berkeley Chicano/Latino Graduation Celebration • UCLA MEChA de UCLA Raza Graduation • Saint Mary’s College Latino Graduate Celebration

And, they all provide Chicano/Latino sashes for their graduates. Ahem.

This new “rule” at West High School led me to investigate which local schools honored this tradition. Apparently, there was no ban on wearing a multitude of sashes. In fact, Kimball High School, continued on next page

ace pocas semanas se puso en cuestionamiento si los estudiantes hispanoamericanos podían o no vestir su simbólica estola latina en las ceremonias de graduación. Al parecer, hubo un voto “de departamento” donde la docencia en la Preparatoria Merrill F. West del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tracy (TUSD, por sus siglas en inglés) decidió que se les permitiría vestir prendas de adorno representativas solo a ciertos programas. Esta votación resultaba en que los latinos ya no podrían lucir sus estolas étnicas tradicionales durante su graduación.

Quitar a nuestros estudiantes el derecho a lucir su estola tradicional latina no puede ser cosa de mandar un correo electrónico. No se puede eliminar con un voto departamental. Y

no se puede hacer sin la protesta de estudiantes, padres y de la comunidad. Apenas se supo del correo sobre la “Decisión del Presidente del Departamento” comenzaron las protestas de grupos locales. Miembros del Comité de Diversidad e Igualdad del Distrito comenzaron a circular correos, hacer llamadas y exigiendo una explicación. Afortunadamente tenemos al miembro del TUSD Walter Gouveia y a Mercedes Silveira-Gouveia, presidente de la Asociación Liderazgo Latino de California, defendiendo a nuestros estudiantes.

Entonces ¿Quién puede llevar la estola latino-chicana en su graduación? Al parecer montones de preparatorias permiten que sus estudiantes luzcan estolas. Investigué un poquito y descubrí que prácticamente todas las universidades públicas y privadas de California permiten a su estudiantado vestir estolas tradicionales. Esta nueva “regla” en la Preparatoria West me instó a investigar qué escuela local respeta esta tradición. Al parecer no hay prohibición en vestir una multitud de estolas. De hecho los estudiantes de las preparatorias Kimball, Tracy y West vestían variedad de prendas, capas, guirnaldas hawaianas, collares de caramelos y otros artesanales, borlas y coloridas bandas.

Como madre de dos estudiantes que se graduaron de la Preparatoria West hace un par de años, me entristece ver que nuestra tradición está siendo amenazada. Lo curioso es que el tema salió abruptamente, a semanas de la ceremonia de graduación. Es aparente que no quebranta las “Normas de Vestir” del Manual Estudiantil 2013-2014 de la Preparatoria West. Además, el tema de la vestimenta en las graduaciones no se continúa a la vuelta JUNE/JULY 2014 Joaquín 3

Tracy High School, and West High School students were attired, cloaked, draped, and sported various regalia, including leis, candy necklaces, hand-made decorative necklaces, tassels, and colorful stoles.

As a parent with two students who graduated from West High School a few years ago, I was saddened to learn our tradition was being threatened. It is curious this issue was raised abruptly, within weeks of the graduation commencement. Apparently, it does not violate the “Dress Standards” in the 2013/2014 West High School Student Handbook. In addition, the issue of graduation commencement attire is not addressed in any Board Policy or Administrative Regulation I was able locate.

So, I must ask: Was there a series of hate crimes, targeting students wearing the Latino sashes? Was there a political uprising that caused District administrators to question this practice? Did last year’s graduation commencement exercises result in an altercation over the wearing of Latino sashes? Was there a sudden surge in the amount of Latino graduates, causing a critical supply and demand issue for local silk retailers? Or, did these colorful sashes cause District staff to classify them “gang related” colors?

Interestingly, one term did surface through discussions concerning our students wearing sashes: dignified. What does that mean, exactly? If we are talking about “dignity” how are these traditional sashes undignified? Who gets to decide this? What criteria is used to assess dignity? If the Chicano/Latino sashes are deemed undignified, does that mean candy sashes are somehow more dignified? What about traditional Hawaiian leis? Are they undignified? Who gets to make that call?

The good news is that our students were able to wear their traditional sash last month.

However, I am not certain whether all Latino students who wished to wear the sash were permitted. My understanding is that only students who met some arbitrary criteria were allowed to wear a Chicano/Latino sash. What type of criteria would meet the standard to allow students to wear one? Being Latino is not a program, club, or service. Being Latino is an identity. There are many Latino students who do not participate in MEChA at West High, or Latinos Unidos at Tracy High. Are they excluded? Does their lack of membership in a school-sponsored club disallow them to proudly wear a sash?

When Latino students (specifically Mexican-Americans) have the lowest educational attainment rates, are at greatest risk for dropping out of high school, and disproportionately 4 Joaquín JUNE/JULY 2014

attend community colleges versus traditional 4-year colleges, then it seems critical they be allowed to show their ethnic pride at such a milestone (graduation). The sash represents more than graduation or identification as Latino. It signifies pride, cultural authenticity, and empowerment to succeed. Oh, and dignity. This begs the question: What is the harm of allowing our students to wear a sash that represents all this?

It is also an “artifact” of sorts for Latino families, being passed down generation-bygeneration. My mom made my sash for my undergraduate and graduate commencements.

She also made them for her grandchildren at their West High School commencement, and we will pass this along when our children graduate next spring at UC Santa Cruz and Harvard University. In spring 2017, I will walk my Doctoral commencement at UC San Diego, and will proudly wear my Chicano/ Latino sash during my hooding ceremony.

My husband, Arturo, wore his Chicano/Latino sash at his Juris Doctorate hooding ceremony at UC Berkeley. Yes, it means that much.

In closing, please enjoy the photo in the previous page, Gabriella Herrera, the 2011 Valedictorian at Merrill F. West High School in TUSD. As the first-ever Latina ValeQuetzalMama dictorian for this District, Roxanne Ocampo wearing her sash meant San Marcos, CA more than just a decorative feature. It represented a victory. For this reason, I urge all TUSD parents, community and residents to let the Board of Trustees know how you feel about our tradition.

No toquen nuestra estola viene de la vuelta

ha tratado en Política de Directorio ni Regla Administrativa que yo sepa.

Así que cabe preguntarse ¿Hubo una serie de crímenes de odiosidad racial involucrando a estudiantes que vestían la estola latina? ¿Hubo alguna revuelta política que hizo que el Distrito cuestionara la práctica? ¿Terminó la graduación del año pasado en algún altercado a causa de lucir esa estola? ¿Hubo algún repentino aumento en graduados latinos que causó escasez entre los vendedores de sedas del área? ¿O fue que estas coloridas estolas hicieron creer al personal de Distrito que eran “pandilleras”?

Curiosamente, un término salió a relucir durante el debate sobre las estolas: dignificante. ¿Qué significa, exactamente? Si estamos hablando de dignidad ¿Cómo estas tradicionales estolas atentan contra la dignidad?

¿Quién decide eso? ¿Qué parámetros se usan para medir dignidad? Si las estolas chicanas son consideradas indignas ¿son entonces los collares de caramelos más dignos? ¿Y qué con las guirnaldas hawaianas? ¿Son también indignas? ¿Quién califica?

Lo bueno fue que al final a nuestros estudiantes se les permitió vestir su estola tradicional el pasado mes, aunque no estoy segura que a todos los que quisieron llevarla se les dejó hacerlo. Entiendo que solo estudiantes que cumplían con ciertas arbitrarias condiciones pudieron vestirlas. ¿Con qué tipo de condiciones debe cumplir uno para que se le permita vestir una estola? Ser latino no es un programa, club o servicio. Ser latino es identidad. Hay muchos latinos que no participan en MEChA en la Prepa West, o Latinos Unidos en la Prepa Tracy ¿Se les debe excluir? El no pertenecer a un club apadrinado por la escuela ¿los margina de lucir orgullosamente una estola?

Si consideramos que los latinos (específicamente los mexicoamericanos) tienen el más bajo índice de rendimiento académico, son quienes más riesgo corren de abandonar los estudios, y estudian desproporcionadamente en universidades comunitarias en lugar de las de 4 años, pareciera importante que los dejemos manifestar algo de orgullo étnico ante este paso —la graduación. La estola representa más que graduarse o ser latino. Significa orgullo, autenticidad cultural y condiciones para triunfar. ¡Oh! Y dignidad. Esto nos hace preguntarnos ¿Qué tiene de malo permitirles a nuestros estudiantes que luzcan una estola que representa todo eso?

Es también algo como una tradición de familia latina, prenda que se pasa de generación en generación. Mi mamá me hizo la estola para mis graduaciones de licenciatura y postgrado. También se las hizo a sus nietos para sus graduación en la Preparatoria West y continuaremos cuando nuestros hijos se gradúen e la UC Santa Cruz y Harvard esta primavera. En la primavera del 2017 voy a recibir mi diploma de doctorado en la UC San Diego y luciré con orgullo mi estola chicanolatina durante la ceremonia de la capucha. Mi marido, Arturo, vistió su estola chicano-latina en su investidura Juris Doctor en UC Berkeley.

Sí. Es así de importante.

Al concluir les invito a ver la foto en la página anterior, Gabriella Herrera, graduada de más alto puntaje en el 2011 en la Preparatoria Merrill F. West del TUSD. Como la primera latina en conquistar ese honor en el Distrito, vestir la estola era más que lucir un adorno, era una victoria. Por esta razón, insto a todos los padres, comunidad y vecinos en el TUSD que le hagan saber al Directorio Escolar su opinión sobre esta tradición.

Super Sizing Our Bodies I

was standing in line in one of the infamous fast food places that makes us feel first-world. The young woman took my order and immediately offered me to “super size” it for 99 cents more.

Her tone was unenthusiastic so I knew her intention was not make me to spend more money on my lunch, but I’m sure her boss told her that was to be part of her spiel when taking an order.

Supersize. A term made famous by a movie a few years ago. But, what does supersize mean? More importantly, what is it doing to our citizens? And how minorities and immigrants are being affected by larger portions of what they eat?

Let’s start with the definition. Since it is a relatively new term, it is assumed it means to get a good deal: more for less. Immigrants and minorities, for the most part, come from less than affluent beginnings. This means they will try to get the most out of anything. They would drive ten miles out of their way to save 50 cents on a loaf of bread, never mind how much gas and time it takes… but they got a deal, didn’t they? For some people it becomes almost like a religion: To buy at regular price is a sin!

Food companies — or their marketing gurus — know that, so every other product will offer you “more for less” money. Actually, it costs more, but you get more product and it leaves you with the curiously guilty/good feeling of having taken advantage of an opportunity —even if you really didn’t needed it.

True: when you get 20 percent more fruit juice in a bottle or an extra quarter pound of detergent for the same amount, chances are that’s a good investment.

But when we talk about certain foods the word “deal” may be really be dealing with our wellbeing. Yet our once-underprivileged mind dictates that we have to get the most for our money …even if we spend twice on products our body doesn’t need.

But, back to the fast food outfit — unless we take the time to read and compare the menu beforehand — we get only a few seconds to make a reasoned decision: should I get the giant portion of fried potatoes and the giant soda cup for 99 cents more? If we really think about it, the giant sized cup may not be much of a deal: most fast food places allow us to as many refills as we desire, even if we pay for the thimble sized cup — we can still afford to burp all the way home. But the fries? How much fat and cholesterol does our body really need? But who cares as long as we get more!

staba en la fila en uno de esos tristemente célebres lugares de comida chatarra que nos hacen sentirnos que vivimos en un primer mundo. La jovencita me tomó la orden e inmediatamente me ofreció “supersize it (agrandarla)” por 99 centavos más.

Su tono no era muy entusiasta por lo que deduje que su intención no era hacer más caro mi almuerzo, solo que su jefe le indicó que debía ofrecerlo con cada orden.

Supersize. Palabrita famosa por una película de hace unos años. Pero ¿qué significa

But what is it we are super sizing, our portions or our bodies?

este término? Más aún ¿Qué le está haciendo la ciudadanía? y ¿Cómo comer tanto afecta a las minorías y los inmigrantes?

Empecemos por la definición. Dado que es una palabra relativamente nueva, se asume que significa una buena inversión: más por menos.Los inmigrantes y las minorías, en su mayoría, provienen de orígenes generalmente humildes. Esto significa que tratarán de aprovechar al máximo cualquier cosa. Manejarán diez millas fuera de su ruta para ahorrarse 50 centavos en un pan, irrelevante del costo en tiempo y gasolina… Pero ahorraron ¿no? Para algunos esto es una verdadera religión, donde comprar a precio regular ¡es pecado!

La industria alimenticia —o sus expertos en mercadotecnia— lo saben, de modo que la mitad de sus productos ofrece “más” por menor precio. En realidad cuesta más, aun cuando usted obtiene más producto… pero deja la curiosa sensación de haber aprovechado una oportunidad —irrelevante si era algo que necesitaba.

Cierto: cuando usted obtiene 20 por ciento más de jugo en un cartón de licuado o un cuarto de libra más de detergente por el mismo monto es posible sea una buena inversión. Pero cuando hablamos de ciertos tipos de comida la palabra “oferta” puede estar jugando con nuestro bienestar. No obstante, revive un pasado de frugalidad en nuestra mente que nos ordena adquirir lo más posible por nuestro dinero… incluso gastar el doble en algo que nuestro cuerpo no necesita.

Pero volviendo al mesón de comida rápida —a menos que usted se tomase el tiempo para comparar el menú de antemano— tiene solo unos segundos para decidir: ¿Compra la bolsa gigante de papitas y el balde de soda por 99 centavos más? Si realmente lo analiza, el balde no es gran oferta: casi todos los puestos de comida rápida ofrecen rellenar cualquier vaso aunque haya comprado la medida de dedal… lo cual le permite eructar hasta su casa por el mismo precio pero ¿Las papitas fritas? ¿Cuánto colesterol y grasa necesita realmente su cuerpo? En su mente no tiene importancia… ha ahorrado.

En realidad no se obtiene mucho con una mayor porción pero, en su cabeza, “ahorró” ¡gastando! Peor aún. Afroamericanos y latinos son a quienes les va peor con las consecuencias: primeros en diabetes, ataques al corazón y en obesidad.

Al final ¿qué es lo que agrandamos con esto de supersize? ¿Nuestras porciones o nuestros cuerpos?

¿Quién Ríe Último?

L

as declaraciones de Donald Sterling, multimillonario propietario del club de baloncesto Los Angeles Clippers, y el acaudalado ranchero Cliven Bundy, han generado mucho debate sobre el estado de las relaciones raciales en los Estados Unidos.

Que esto coincida con el 60º aniversario del emblemático veredicto de la Corte Suprema en el caso de desegregación escolar Brown vs.

Directorio Escolar hace cavilar cuánto hemos progresado y hacia dónde. Estos incidentes y la notoria baja del acceso de la gente de color a la participación revelan cuan grave es el prejuicio en los EEUU: los racistas ricos, una vez más, dan forma a la creciente desigualdad que amenaza nuestra promesa nacional.

La reacción oficial de la Asociación Nacional de Baloncesto (NBA por sus siglas en inglés) a las secretas instrucciones de Sterling a su asistente —no relacionarse ni llevar amigos afroamericanos a juegos ni funciones— fue inmediata y punitiva. Se le multó en $2,5 millones, se le marginó de toda actividad en la NBA y se le obligó a vender su club. Finalmente, después de un largo historial racista en transacción de propiedades y viviendas, trato discriminatorio de empleados y quien sabe cuánta diatriba odiosa “en privado”, este multimillonario fue drástica y justamente rechazado, aun cuando vender el club le reportará una enorme ganancia.

La NBA y la mayoría de los jugadores de baloncesto que opinaron sobre el caso admitieron que el problema no es que se haga una declaración odiosa sino el poder que tiene el racista. No se le puede quitar su dinero, pero sí se le podía apartar del baloncesto y es lo que se hizo. En el ínterin, en muchos círculos el debate se ha desviado a la intromisión en la privacidad de Sterling, sus derechos de propiedad y si su “duro” castigo es equivalente a expresar prejuicios “que todos tenemos en algún grado”. La mayoría de estos argumentos confunden el meollo del asunto.

La experiencia con aquel ranchero libertario y defensor del derecho a portar armas de Nevada demuestra, lamentablemente, cuan fuera de contexto se puede llegar. Unos pocos de sus simpatizantes conservadores y republicanos condenaron su deplorable declaración

Board of Education on school desegregation raise key questions about how much progress we have made and where we are going.

These incidents and the steep decline in access to equal opportunity for people of color expose the gravity of the prejudice problem in America: wealthy bigots are, again, shaping the exponential growth of inequality that threatens our national promise.

The official reaction by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to Sterling’s secretly recorded orders to his assistant that she not associate with or bring African-American friends to games or other functions was swift and punitive. The owner was assessed a 2 ½ million dollar fine, barred from all NBA activity and forced to sell his team. Finally, after years of a racist track record in housing and real estate dealings, discriminatory treatment of employees and who knows just how much “private” hate speech, the billionaire was strongly and deservedly rebuked, even if he will in the end be able to sell the team for an enormous profit.

The NBA and most of the basketball players who commented on the situation clearly recognized that the issue was not about making a hateful statement but about the power wielded by the bigot. They could not take away

his money, but they could remove him from the game of basketball and did. Meanwhile, in many circles controversy and discussion has shifted to questions over the abuse of Sterling’s privacy, his property rights and whether such “harsh” punishment should be meted out for the expression of prejudices “that we all have to some degree.” Most of this babble completely misses the point.

The experience with the Nevada libertarian and gun rights advocate regrettably shows just how far off the mark people can get in such matters. A few conservative and Republican supporters of Bundy rightly denounced his detestable suggestion that African-Americans would be better off to have remained in slavery, but they missed the real issue, and most of his supporters just kept quiet. The reason why Bundy truly deserves opprobrium and opposition center on the abuse of his wealth, just as Sterling did, to bully and intimidate those he dislikes, while at the same time justifying the refusal of the rich to support public obligations, such as paying of land use fees and other taxes that help protect society in general, or, heaven forbid, pay for the schools of the children of those he mockingly sympathizes with as liberated slaves.

Unfortunately for America, most of our rich and powerful bigots are far more subtle and less obvious than the Sterlings and Bundys, at the same time that their wealth has been growing astronomically as we have reported earlier in these pages. Nowhere is the consequence of this pattern clearer than in the sorry state of the struggle over school integration and educational quality in the U.S. When we should be celebrating 60 years of progress, the discrediting of the concepts of integration and affirmative action are, ironically, the evidence of the triumph and reaffirmation of the rights to privilege and exclusivity that are again being shaped by wealth and bigotry. Rather than proudly leading the world in educational achievement as we did during the heyday of integration, America now barely makes the top 40 in most respects.

Project Report. The shrinking population of average white students in America attend schools that are 73% white, 8% black, 12% Latino and 4% Asian, that sprinkling of color that is now used to proclaim politically correct “diversity.” These schools have the most experienced teachers, better facilities, and low rates of dropout and detention, and less than 2% of families live below the poverty line in these schools. Their graduates will go on to shape America’s still affluent but shrinking middle class and the small elite that may now surpass even our legendary robber barons in relative wealth.

The situation is completely different for the average black or Latino, native American or Gene Bigler, PhD Southeast Asian students Writer & consultant who attend schools that on global affairs, are at least half from former professor, these groups, and for two retired diplomat of five students of color, their schools have 90% or more classmates of their same ethnicity. More revealing still of how this situation structures access to opportunity is the fact that in over half of the schools in which a majority of the students are from minority groups, over 90% of the students come from families that are below the poverty level. In these schools, teachers are less experienced and prepared, dropout rates are high and detention and suspension are common experiences, especially for male students. These sorry schools help produce the world’s highest rate of incarceration, increasing long term unemployment, fatherless families, teen pregnancies, and a vast array of other social and economic problems.

As Patrick Sharkey showed in a study for New York University, the new pattern of school segregation in America follows directly from the pattern of income inequality which segregates our neighborhoods and in turn determines the quality of our schools.

On the anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, Attorney General Eric Holder explained that this is not just a white and black issue either. He strongly linked the struggle for access to educational quality to the effort for immigration reform, saying “it is vital for reducing inequality among future generations of American children.” Sadly, the only newspaper that gave really prominent coverage to his remarks was the British newspaper, The Guardian.

America. The issue that is now holding our country back is not the persistence of racist rhetoric. We have fallen behind other industrialized countries in the achievement of the American dream of access to opportunity because we have again allowed wealth and power to become concentrated in the hands of a few inevitably prejudiced citizens who are more concerned about protecting their own privileges, and denying opportunity to those whom they dislike, than the system that is supposed to provide for all God’s children, as President Obama likes to remind us. The greater is the shame for America. Instead of making our emerging majority of color into a new banner of national accomplishment, we allow a tiny elite of wealth and privilege to undermine our legacy of freedom and respect for human striving, along with a deteriorating quality of life for the rest of us, as well.

One has to ask, will America allow the Sterlings and the Bundys, along with the slave owners, Klansmen and nativists of the past, actually get the last laugh?

la integración y calidad en la educación en los EEUU. Cuando debiésemos estar celebrando 60 años de progreso, el desprestigio de los conceptos ‘integración’ y ‘acción afirmativa’ son, irónicamente, la evidencia del triunfo y re-afirmación del derecho al privilegio y exclusividad que renace con la riqueza y el racismo. En vez de orgullosamente encabezar el progreso mundial en rendimiento educacional como ocurría en los días de la integración, los EEUU apenas clasifican entre los primeros 40 en casi todos los aspectos.

Las consecuencias para la nación quedan demostradas en las recientes estadísticas publicadas por el Reporte de Derechos Civiles de la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles.

La decreciente población estudiantil caucásica promedio en los EEUU asiste a escuelas que son 73% blanca, 8% negra, 12% latina y 4% asiática… ese retoque de color que ahora se usa para declarar que se cumple con la “diversidad”. Estas escuelas cuentan con los maestros más experimentados, mejores instalaciones, y bajos índices de deserción y detención, y en estas escuelas menos del 2% de las familias viven bajo el nivel de pobreza. Sus graduados serán quienes lideren la todavía acomodada —aunque cada vez menor— clase media y la pequeña élite que probablemente ya sobrepasa la comparable riqueza de los legendarios ‘Magnates Ladrones’.

lo menos la mitad del estudiantado pertenece a uno de estos grupos y —en dos de cada cinco estudiantes de color— su escuela está compuesta por 90% o más de chicos de su etnia o raza. Más revelador de cómo esta situación condiciona el acceso a oportunidades es el hecho que en más de la mitad de las escuelas en las que predominan las minorías, más del 90% de las familias de los estudiantes viven bajo el nivel de pobreza. En estas escuelas, los maestros son menos experimentados y preparados, la deserción escolar es alta y tanto la detención como la suspensión son normales, especialmente entre los muchachos. Estas excusas de escuelas ayudan a producir el más alto índice de encarcelados en el mundo, un creciente desempleo a largo plazo, familias sin padres, embarazos juveniles, y una vasta gama de otros problemas sociales y económicos.

Nos hemos rezagado detrás de otras naciones industrializadas en alcanzar el sueño estadosunidense de la igualdad porque hemos permitido una vez más que la riqueza y el poder se hayan concentrado en las manos de unos inevitablemente prejuiciosos ciudadanos más preocupados por proteger sus privilegios, al tiempo que niegan espacio a quienes desprecian, que al sistema que supone proveer a todos los hijos de Dios —como le gusta recordarnos el presidente Obama. Eso hace mayor la humillación de los EEUU. En lugar de convertir el crecimiento social de la gente de color en un estandarte de triunfo nacional, permitimos que una minúscula élite de riqueza y privilegio mine nuestro legado de libertad y respeto por la lucha humana, junto con deteriorar la calidad de vida para el resto de nosotros.

Uno debe preguntarse ¿Permitirán los EEUU que los Sterlings y los Bundys —junto a los negreros, miembros del KKK y ‘nativistas’ del pasado— rían al último?

onocí a Michael Anthony Rodríguez Tejada hace unos años cuando organizaba una serie cultural llamada Noches de Viernes para el Centro del Patrimonio Mexicano, en Stockton. “Richard, tengo un nieto que toca el arpa ¡deberías escucharlo!” me dijo excitadísima Yolanda Tejada.

“Sí, sí”, asentí con la cabeza. Pasaron meses y nuevamente me rogó que lo trajera al Centro. Un día —sin siquiera hacerle una audición— lo incorporé al programa. Esa noche asombro a la asistencia. Al año siguiente lo incluí para que actuara en nuestro programa anual de cultura Tarde de Flor y Canto en el Museo Haggin. “La verdad es que no me gusta tocar solo” dijo, “prefiero acompañar a otros”. Pero su presentación como solista eran grito y plata. Desde entonces, muchos hemos tenido la oportunidad de escuchar a “Mike”.

“Por lo que me cuentan, empecé a cantar a eso de los seis meses, tarareando las canciones que escuchaba. Mi abuela y maestra preescolar, Isabel Rodríguez, vio talento en mí y dijo, “Michael, deberías cantar, expresarte, tener sueños y aspiraciones, ser creativo”. Con mi mamá cantábamos juntos en el coche escuchando R&B, mariachi, latino, jazz suave, funk en la radio.

“Mi primera actuación ocurrió cuando una prima mayor, Vanessa Rodríguez —triple fenómeno: cantante, actriz y bailarina— nos dijo que el programa artístico veraniego local, ‘Plays in The Park’ estaba preparando la obra ‘El Rey y Yo’, de Rodger y Hammerstein. Un Ángel Con Arpa

I

first met Michael Anthony Rodriguez Tejada a few years ago when I was putting together a Friday Night series of cultural events for the Mexican Heritage Center, in Stockton. “Richard, I have a grandson who plays harp and you have to hear him!” Yolanda Tejada excitedly, told me. “Sure, sure”, I nodded. Months passed and again she pleaded with me to bring him to the Center. One day —without even auditioning him— I put him on the

program. That night, he awed the crowd. The following year I booked him for a performance in our annual “Tarde de Flor y Canto” cultural program at the Haggin Museum. “I really don’t like playing by myself” he said, “I’d rather accompany others.” But his solo performance was a show-stopper. Since then, many of us have had the pleasure of hearing “Mike” play.

“From what I’m told, at about 6 months of age I’d sing along to songs I heard. My grandmother, Isabel Rodriguez, a preschool teacher, saw talent in me and told me, ‘Michael, you should sing, express yourself, have dreams and aspirations, and be creative.’ My mom and I would sing songs in the car together and she’d play R&B music, Mariachi, Latin, Smooth Jazz, Funk, on the radio.

My first performance came when my older cousin, Vanessa Rodriguez —a triple threat singer/actress/dancer— told my mom and I that a local summer arts program ‘Plays In The Park’ was doing a production of Rodger and Hammerstein’s ‘The King and I’. That summer of 1998, at the age of 6, I took the stage for the first time and soon it became a second home to me.

The next year I had a part in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Stockton Civic Theater and in the summer of 2002, I performed in Rodger and Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella.’

Over the next few years, I went through several traumatic experiences. I needed to find an outlet and music instinctively was my first choice. But I heard from my peers, a teacher, even my grandmother that ‘music is not a career. There’s no future in it.’ In 2005, I joined SAMI, a summer performing arts institute that included dance, band, and choir. The director, Mel Suguitan, also taught choir at Edison High School, and directed my church’s choir. orchestra and choir at a new school, Cesar Chavez High School, and he thought I’d be a perfect recruit for the district’s first high school mariachi class.

I’d never had experience with mariachi music. At first, I tried the vihuela and guitarron, but I was passionate about neither. One day while listening to a CD of my mom’s late cousin’s mariachi from Los Angeles I realized I wanted to play harp like him. I found a teacher of the traditional harp, took a couple of lessons and then I rented a harp to practice at home. I found myself leaning towards the style of playing that my mom’s cousin played, Son Jarocho de Veracruz. Eventually, my paternal grandmother, Yolanda Tejada, bought me a Jarocho harp which I play to this day.

Since then, I have played in many mariachi groups from Stockton, Modesto, Fresno, Los Angeles, along with many fine musicians from California, Texas, Arizona, and Mexico.

In Ventura County and Los Angeles I’ve played with some of the best Son Jarocho musicians. I currently perform in Grupo Folklore, a Sacramento-based ensemble, with Arturo Martinez, renowned vihuela player, and Sayra Fernandez, violinist. However, after almost two years, this will be my final year with them, since I will be moving to Southern California in September to further my career as a musician. It will be painful to

leave so many beautiful and amazing people behind, but I know playing the harp is what I am meant to do.”

Encontré a un maestro de arpa tradicional, tomé un par de lecciones y terminé arrendando un arpa para practicar en casa. Descubrí en mí una tendencia a tratar de tocar como el primo de mamá, el son jarocho de Veracruz.

Eventualmente mi abuela paterna, Yolanda Tejada, me compró el arpa jarocha que toco hasta hoy día.

“Desde entonces he tocado en grupos mariachi de Stockton, Modesto, Fresno, Los Ángeles, junto a excelentes músicos de California, Texas, Arizona y México. En el condado Ventura y Los Ángeles he tocado con algunos de los mejores intérpretes del son jarocho. Hoy en día toco en el Grupo Folklore, un elenco basado en Sacramento, con el reconocido intérprete de vihuela Arturo Martínez, y la violinista Sayra Fernández.

Sin embargo, luego de dos años, este será mi último con ellos dado que en septiembre me mudo al sur de California para avanzar mi carrera musical. Será doloroso dejar atrás a gente tan linda y maravillosa, pero sé que mi futuro es tocar el arpa”.

También lo creemos. Le deseamos lo mejor a Michael, su partida dejará un gran vacío en nuestra comunidad. Tocarás para nosotros cuando lleguemos el cielo, Michael ¿no?.

Are there alternatives?

The California Twin Tunnels are a proposal to build a gigantic water conveyance system around the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta to the south of the state. $67 billion dollars, the largest estuary on the west coast of the Americas, and the livelihood of thousands, if not millions of people is the expected cost of these tunnels. But what Governor Brown’s Administration has failed to realize is that there’s a better solution: Strengthen existing levees. Delta levees are not as vulnerable to earthquakes, floods, and sea level rise as tunnel supporters say they are. But levees do protect against flooding and the resulting loss of life and property. And they protect water transfers, highways, railroads, gas lines, and power lines. For $2-$4 billion, a fraction of the cost for the tunnels, Delta levees can be upgraded to ensure a reliable water supply and to protect the environment and the Delta economy.

Reduce the amount of water taken from the Delta. The State has promised exporters more water than it can reliably supply without

shortchanging users and the environment in “areas of origin”—the places the water comes from. The thirstiest export users are megafarms on the arid west side of the San Joaquin Valley. Many of them have planted permanent crops like almond trees instead of field crops that can be fallowed in years when there is no surplus water. Also, they are irrigating toxic lands that do not drain properly. It makes more sense to preserve farming on prime agricultural land in the Delta and surrounding areas.

Route fresh water through the Delta.

Water that flows to the ocean is not wasted. It supports the ocean food chain and is critical to the survival of salmon fisheries. The State Water Board and both state and federal fishery agencies have repeatedly said that Delta outflows must be increased if the estu-

ary’s historic fisheries are going to survive. Extra water can be exported through existing pumps if state-of-the-art fish screens are installed.

Increase reliance on local water supplies and improve water conservation. California needs to fix and upgrade its local water and wastewater systems. We need to invest in local water systems because diversified local sources are more reliable in a state like California that has drought one third of the time. Peripheral Tunnels costing over $50 billion would undermine local investments without making more water for the system.

Fortalecer los diques que ya tenemos. Los diques del Delta no son tan vulnerables a los terremotos, inundaciones y aumentos del nivel del mar como los patrocinadores de los túneles dicen que son. Pero los diques sí protegen contra las inundaciones y la consiguiente pérdida de vidas y bienes.

Por $2-$4 mil millones, una fracción del costo de los túneles, se pueden actualizar los diques del Delta para asegurar un suministro de agua confiable y de proteger el medio ambiente y la economía del delta.

Reducir la cantidad de agua tomada del Delta. El Estado le ha prometido a la gente más agua de la que puede suministrar de forma fiable y termina estafando a los usuarios y el medio ambiente en las “zonas de origen”- los lugares donde viene el agua.

Los usuarios más grandes del agua exportada son las mega-granjas en el lado oeste árido del Valle de San Joaquín. Que pase el agua dulce a través del Delta. El agua que fluye hacia el océano no es desperdiciada. Sirve como parte de la cadena alimenticia del océano y es crítica para la supervivencia de la pesca del salmón. La Junta Estatal de Agua y ambas agencias pesqueras estatales y federales han dicho en repetidas ocasiones que el agua dulce que sale del Delta debe aumentar si las pesquerías históricas del estuario van a sobrevivir. El exceso de agua puede ser exportado a través de bombas existentes si se han instalado pantallas para peses más nuevas.

Aumentar la dependencia de los suministros locales de agua y mejorar la conservación del agua. California necesita reparar y mejorar sus sistemas de agua y aguas residuales locales. Tenemos que invertir en sistemas de agua locales ya que las fuentes locales diversificados son más fiables en un estado como California, que tiene sequías un tercio del tiempo. Los túneles que cuestan más de $60 mil millones y quitarían las inversiones locales, sin hacer más agua para el California.

“El Marginado”

C

uando le dije a mamá que cuando fuera grande quería ser artista, dijo despreciativamente “¿Pa’qué?

Los artistas solo se hacen famosos después de muertos”. Así, ese futuro ha acosado a cientos de futuros malhadados artistas, poetas y músicos, prácticamente desconocidos durante sus vidas, como lo hizo con Martín Ramírez (1895-1963), un inmigrante mexicano que se pasó la mayor parte de su vida adulta institucionalizado en hospitales mentales de California. Martín emigró desde su pueblo en México, Altos de Jalisco, como muchos otros mexicanos, buscando trabajo en los EEUU. Atrapado en la vorágine económica de la Gran Depresión, se halló sin techo ni trabajo, sin hablar palabra de inglés. Perdido y desorientado, fue detenido, diagnosticado con esquizofrenia catatónica, e institucionalizado en el Hospital Estatal de Stockton. Más tarde fue trasladado al Hospital Estatal Dewitt en Auburn, CA. donde murió en 1963. Mientras tanto y por 32 años —con cualquier medio a mano, lápices, crayolas, plumas— produjo cientos de dibujos y collages, en el reverso de envoltorios de caramelos, formularios de hospital, o vasos de papel.

The “Outsider”

que, aunque autodidacta, crean ar te sor prendente. En los 1980s, enseñando y realizando trabajo voluntario en la Correccional Juvenil de California me tropecé con muchos de estos artistas autodidactas. Aunque supongo que podían dedicarse a crear por tener tanto tiempo para hacer nada. Este tipo de arte, a veces sofisticado, otras infantil, ha sido clasificado “primitivo, simplón, arte folclórico” o, “arte marginal”, pero en ocasiones se le halla el mismo valor que el arte de alguien con escuela, como es el caso de artistas primitivos como la Abuela Moses, Edward Hicks, Grant Wood o Ben Shahn.

La obra de Ramírez ya había sido “descubierta” para los 1950’s, culminando en su primera exhibición de nota en enero del 2007 en el Museo de Arte Folclórico Estadounidense en Nueva York. Sus piezas ahora se venden por miles de dólares y el New York Times lo ha llamado “…simplemente uno de los más grandes artistas del Siglo 20”. Nos trae a la memoria “Fanfarria para el Hombre Común” —la evocadora composición de Aaron Copeland—pieza que le hubiera quedado muy bien al tipo de gente como Martín Ramírez, “el marginado”.

W

hen I told my mom I wanted to be an artist when I grew up, she said smugly “Why? Artists only get famous after they’re dead.” And so, this fate has haunted the hundreds of hapless, would-be artists, poets and musicians who were virtually unknown during their lifetimes, and as it did with Martin Ramirez (1895-1963), a Mexican immigrant who spent most of his adult years institutionalized at California State Hospitals. Martin emigrated from his town in Mexico, Los Altos de Jalisco, like so many other Mexicans, to find work in the US. Caught up in the economic downturn of The Great Depression, he found himself homeless and jobless, and unable to speak English. Lost and disoriented, he was arrested, diagnosed with “Catatonic Schizophrenia”, and institutionalized at Stockton State hospital. He was later transferred to Dewitt State Hospital in Auburn, Ca. where he died in 1963.

Meanwhile, and for 32 years, with whatever mediums he could find, pencil, crayons, pens, he produced hundreds of drawings, paintings and collages, on backs of candy wrappers, hospital supply forms, or paper cups.

As a trained artist, it never ceases to amaze me when I bump into people who are self-taught, yet create amazing art. Teaching

and doing volunteer work back in the 80s at the California Youth Authority I met many of these self-made artists. But I suppose they were able to create art having so much “time on their hands.” This type of art, sometimes sophisticated, sometimes child-like, has been labeled “primitive, naive, folk art,” or “outsider art”, but it sometimes demands same value as the art of the trained artist, as in the pieces of primitive artists like Grandma Moses, Edward Hicks, Grant Wood, or Ben Shahn.

As early as the 1950′s, Ramirez’ work was first “discovered”, which culminated in his first major exhibit at the American Folk Art Museum in New York, in January of 2007. His works now sell for thousands of dollars and The New York Times has called him “… simply one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century.” We are reminded of Aaron Copeland’s haunting piece, “Fanfare for the Common Man,” a piece befitting for the likes of Martin Ramirez, the “outsider.”

Pressing for Truth

S

everal years ago I ran across a copy of the Volume 84/ Number 2 / winter 2006 - 2007 The Magazine of the California Historical Society. This particular issue caught my attention because it was totally devoted to the life and struggle of Francisco P. Ramirez who at the age of 18 started his own newspaper in Los Angeles, California and published from 1855 to 1859 and later in San Francisco he published El Nuevo Mundo. Francisco P. Ramirez championed the struggles of Mexicans and Californios.

His grandfather, Francisco Ramirez arrived from Sonora, Mexico in 1794 with his wife Rosa Quijada, settled at the Mission Santa Barbara where Juan Ramirez was born in 1801.

In 1828 Juan met and married his mother, Petra Avila. Petra’s father Francisco Avila had been mayor of Los Angeles.

My research led me to The Decline of the Californios, The Los Angeles Barrio, and The Joaquin Band: The History behind the Legend, EI Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition. And then —in 2012— Paul Bryan Gray wrote the most comprehensive and exciting to read book, A Clamor for Equality; Emergence and Exile of Californio activist Francisco P. Ramirez.

Francisco was at the middle of the crisis that came about at the end of the U.S. aggressive action “Manifest Destiny” against Mexico. Although he never completed a college education he was an avid reader and supported by his parents was sent to an east coast boarding school. Francisco was fluent in Spanish, French, and English. In addition to being the editor of several newspapers, he was also a translator for the State Department in compliance with the first constitution of the state of California.

Francisco was to use outside jobs to finance his struggling newspapers. Because of his strong beliefs of the equality of man and equal representation he was to alienate many people of the non-Hispanic ethnicity. In 1857 he wrote a strong, pro- Mexican critique of former state Senator and one-time Stockton resident Henry Crabb’s filibustering expedition into Sonora, Mexico that cost Crabb and his men their lives.

In addition to starting one of the first Bilingual newspapers in California, Ramirez ran for numerous political offices. When he was no longer able to finance El Clamor Publico 14 Joaquín JUNE/JULY 2014

he was forced to shut down the paper and was offered a job in Sonora, Mexico as editor in chief of the state paper. For a period of time Mr. Ramirez was hired by lawyers to translate legal documents and to act as translator. After studying Law for one year Francisco P. Ramirez applied to and was admitted to the bar, only the 3rd Hispanic lawyer in California in 1857.

As editor of El Clamor Publico Mr. Ramirez would chastise the Mexican community for non-participation in local politics and on many occasions he was employed to deliver the Mexican vote.

Mexicans and Californios still favored and supported the motherland. When word reached California that the French had landed and been defeated at Puebla, they knew that the war was not over and that Benito Juarez would need men and financial assistance. In Mexico Juntas Patrióticas had been organized to raise the much needed money. Soon there were Juntas Patrioticas in Marysville, Sacramento, Stockton, and French Camp, spreading as far as Nevada and Oregon. Ramirez sought out unsuccessfully the position of statewide Junta Patriótica treasurer.

Una Revista The life of Francisco P. Ramirez brings to mind the struggles Roberto Radrigan has waged to bring bilingual news to the people of San Joaquin County. Roberto was born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1956, the son of a union leader in the national railroad de Chile, factor that influenced a socialistic view on his life. He attended public schools and in 1974, at 17, was admitted to the Catholic University of Valparaiso’s School of Architecture for later, move to the public University of Chile where he studied Graphic and Industrial Design. In 1978, Roberto was involved in a student led political rally —something the governing Pinochet dictatorship would not have— and was blacklisted. It was a good time to join his political refugee brother in Stockton, California, where he attended Delta College and later the University of the Nevada. In 1998 Roberto became a U.S. citizen through a path started with the 1986 Immigration Reform amnesty program.

Like Francisco Ramirez, Roberto has had a number of careers and overcome many obstacles. Worked as designer in Las Vegas, the Bay

Area, a n d Los Angeles, where he reaped several awards to creativity, and pl aye d a n a c t ive role in the short-lived Stockton publications Portavoz (1979-1980) and El Sur (1982-1983.) In 1991 moved to Mexico City to study at UNAM, Universidad Autonoma de Mexico. In 1997, he was hired by the Stockton Record to collaborate in the bilingual weekly “EI Tiempo”, and later was hired as a Sunday Record columnist.

Meanwhile, in 2002, Roberto took over EI Concilio’s weekly La Voz that, in 2006, became the respected Bilingual Weekly newspaper.

By early 2011, burned out, Roberto quit journalism but by mid-2102 he had started Joaquín, the first intellectual and bilingual Latino magazine in the Central Valley.

Since the inception of Joaquin, Roberto —like Francisco Ramírez— has had to overcome numerous issues to meet the linguistic, cultural, and political concerns of everyone.

Initially, to encourage support and subscriptions the magazine was offered free and encouraged a minimal subscription rate.

ace unos años, hojeando la edición del invierno 2006-07 de la Revista de la Sociedad Histórica de California (Volumen 84/Número 2) me sorprendió que estaba casi totalmente dedicada a la vida de Francisco P. Ramírez quien, a los 18 años, empezó su propio periódico en Los Ángeles, California (1855 a 1859) y más tarde El Nuevo Mundo, en San Francisco, donde exponía las adversidades de mexicanos y californios.

Su abuelo, Francisco había llegado en 1794 de Sonora, México con su esposa Rosa Quijada, y se asentó en la Misión de Santa Bárbara, donde en 1801 nació Juan, su padre. En 1828 Juan conoció y se casó con su madre, Petra Ávila, hija de Francisco Ávila, quien fuera alcalde de Los Ángeles.

Mi investigación me derivó a La Decadencia de los Californios, El Barrio de Los Ángeles, La Banda de Joaquín, La Historia tras la Leyenda, y El Cinco de Mayo: Tradición Estadounidense. Y luego —en el 2012— Paul Bryan Gray escribió el libro más completo y entretenido, Un Clamor de Igualdad; Surgimiento y Exilio del Activista Californio Francisco P. Ramírez.

Francisco se halló en el medio de la crisis que siguió al concluir la agresiva acción “Destino Manifiesto” estadounidense contra México. Aun cuando nunca terminó su educación universitaria era un ávido lector y, con la ayuda de sus padres, asistió a un internado en la costa atlántica. Francisco dominaba el español, francés y el inglés. Además de ser el editor de varios periódicos era un traductor para el Depar-

tamento de Estado, requisito que establecía la primera constitución del Estado de California.

Financiaba sus periódicos, siempre en dificultades económicas, con trabajos aquí y allá. Sus fuertes convicciones en la igualdad del hombre y de la representación le granjearon el desagrado de gente que no era hispana. En 1857 escribió una fuerte crítica a la aventurera expedición del exsenador estatal Henry Crabb a Sonora, México, misma que le costó la vida tanto a Crabb como a sus seguidores.

Además de fundar uno de los primeros periódicos bilingües en California, Ramírez fue candidato para numerosos puestos públicos. Cuando ya no pudo financiar El Clamor Público tuvo que clausurarlo y le ofrecieron ser editor jefe del periódico estatal en Sonora, México. Por un tiempo hubo abogados que contrataron a Ramírez para traducir documentos jurídicos o actuar como intérprete.

Luego de estudiar derecho por un año Ramírez postuló y fue aceptado para practicar leyes convirtiéndose, en 1857, en el tercer abogado hispano en California.

Como editor de El Clamor Público, Ramírez fustigaba a la comunidad mexicana por su apatía a participar en política local y en muchas ocasiones fue el encargado de conseguir el Voto Mexicano. Mexicanos y californios todavía favorecían y apoyaban su madre patria. Cuando se supo en California que los franceses habían desembarcado y sido derrotados en Puebla, estos sabían que esa guerra no había terminado allí y que Benito Juárez iba a necesitar dinero Richard Soto y hombres. En México Biblioteca se habían organizado San Joaquin Juntas Patrióticas para Murrieta Library recaudar fondos que se necesitaban con urgencia. Pronto hubo Juntas Patrióticas en Marysville, Sacramento, Stockton y French Camp, diseminándose hasta Nevada y Oregón. Francisco trató, sin éxito, ser tesorero estatal de Juntas Patrióticas.

Una Revista La vida de Ramírez me hace pensar en las peripecias que ha pasado Roberto Radrigán para ofrecer información bilingüe a la población del Condado San Joaquín. Roberto nació

en Valparaíso en 1956, hijo de un dirigente sindical en el ferrocarril nacional chileno, factor que le dio una perspectiva socialista en su vida.

Asistió a escuelas públicas y en 1974, a los 17 años, fue admitido a la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso para más tarde cambiarse a la Universidad de Chile, institución pública, donde estudió diseño gráfico e industrial. En 1978 Roberto estuvo invoulcrado en una manifestación política —algo que la dictadura de Pinochet no gustaba— por lo que terminó en una lista negra. Fue un buen momento para unirse a su hermano y refugiado político en Stockton, California, donde estudió en Delta College y más tarde la Universidad de Nevada. En 1998 Roberto se nacionalizó estadounidense al final de un camino que empezó con la amnistía que ofreció la Reforma Inmigratoria de 1986.

Al igual que Francisco Ramírez, Roberto ha practicado muchos oficios y vencido muchos obstáculos. Fue diseñador en Las Vegas, el Área de la Bahía, Los Ángeles, donde cosechó variados premios de creatividad y participó activamente en la efímera vida de los periódicos estocktonianos Portavoz (1979-1980) y El Sur (1982-1983). En 1991 se mudó a Ciudad de México para completar sus estudios en la Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM). En 1997 fue contratado por el Stockton Record para trabajar en el semanario bilingüe El Tiempo y más tarde se convirtió en columnista de la edición dominical del The Record.

En el ínterin, a Roberto se le pidió dirigir el semanario del El Concilio La Voz, mismo que en el 2006 se convertiría en el respetado Bilingual Weekly.

A principios del 2011, desgastado, Roberto dejó el periodismo pero, para mediados del 2012, había comenzado Joaquín, la primera revista latina intelectual y bilingüe en el Valle Central. Desde que empezó Joaquín, Roberto —al igual que Francisco Ramírez— ha tenido que salvar numerosas dificultades para reflejar la visión lingüística, cultural y política de todos.

En un principio —para motivar apoyo y suscripciones— la revista se ofreció gratis y el precio por suscribirse fue marginal. Sin embargo, los costos de publicación han subido en extremo. Usted puede solidarizar con los esfuerzos de Joaquín invirtiendo en un aviso, subscripción, patrocinios o donaciones.

In Harmony with Stockton

l Sistema, a social-intervention program pioneered in the 1970s in Venezuela and designed to incorporate underprivileged children into society through music, has gained a foothold in Stockton. Venezuelan Margaret González, herself a product of Sistema, is working five days a week with Marshall Elementary School children to change their lives. Joaquin asked her: J: How can a program conceived for a social reality such as Venezuela’s become viable for the United States?

MG: Poverty and lack of self-esteem are the same in every part of the world. El Sistema reinforces values, teamwork, self-esteem, family; the predicament of a poor child in Venezuela and one in Los Angeles may be different in material ways but the same when it comes where it situates the child’s future in society.

J: Why begin this program in Stockton and why Marshall School?

MG: To make a difference in the community and the youth of Stockton. We chose Marshall School because the nearby community is demographically poor, with great social challenges, lack of incentives, and no cultural opportunities.

J: What kinds of students become interested in the program? What is its composition?

MG: It follows the demographics… mostly Latinos, then African Americans, followed by other minorities.

J: What kind of music they are exposed to?

MG: All the classics like Beethoven, Mozart, etc. but also folk music from other cultures and countries, and they get to choose the instrument they would like to play.

J: How many children have enrolled? How many are in it today?

MG: We just started with few but now we have increased to almost 40.

J: How many teachers are involved? Who sponsors them?

MG: We have two coordinators and five teachers; one of them is the lead choir teacher.

The Stockton Symphony oversees operations. “Harmony Stockton”, is a partnership of four organizations; United Way, Stockton Symphony, Pacific University and Stockton Unified School District.

J: Who provides the instruments for the children?

MG: Harmony Stockton lends instruments for students in the program. Some of the instruments are donated by individuals.

J: Do you have any success-stories so far?

MG: We have a 6th grader who became frustrated and aggressive after her father died. Music-making and working in a team helped her to control her aggressiveness and regain her social skills.

J: How do you describe Harmony Stockton’s long term goal?

MG: Something that supports the intellectual, emotional, and social development of students, and one that will in the long run, create more than exceptional musicians: exceptional citizens.

J: ¿Cuántos chicos se han inscrito? ¿Cuántos hay hoy en día?

MG: Empezamos con solo unos pocos, pero han aumentado a casi 40.

J: ¿Cuántos maestros están en esto? ¿Quién los patrocina?

MG: Tenemos dos coordinadores y cinco maestros; uno es el maestro jefe del coro. La Orquesta Sinfónica de Stockton supervisa las operaciones. “Harmony Stockton” es una colaboración de cuatro organizaciones, La United Way, la Sinfónica de Stockton, Universidad del Pacífico y el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Stockton.

J: ¿Quién facilita los instrumentos a los chicos?

MG: Harmony Stockton presta los instrumentos a los estudiantes en el programa.

Otros son donados por particulares.

J: ¿Alguna historia de éxito hasta el momento?

MG: Tenemos una chica de 6º grado que estaba muy frustrada y agresiva desde que muriera su padre. Hacer música y el trabajo en grupo le ayudó a controlar su agresividad y recuperar su interacción social.

J: ¿Cómo describe usted el objetivo a largo plazo de Harmony Stockton?

MG: Como algo que refuerza el desarrollo intelectual, emocional y social del estudiante; y que, a la larga, crea algo más que músicos excepcionales: ciudadanos excepcionales.

San Joaquin Math Tournament adds 2014 champions Tyler Akbary wins first-place in fourth annual County Math Tournament on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

The fourth annual San Joaquin County Math Tournament for grades 7 and 8 was held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

Twenty-nine teams of mathletes from 15 schools in San Joaquin County participated in this high-energy competition. Students competed both individually and as a team.

“Y

ou’re not a real Mexican. You’re only half of one.”

I can’t even begin to count the number of times people have said this to me. Hell!

Even my grandmother says this to me.

But what does it even mean to be a real Mexican?

When I was a teen, I knew someone who would constantly grill me on my Mexicanness: what did my mom cook for dinner? Where in Mexico was my family from? Have I ever been to Mexico? Did we have nopales (cactus) in our backyard?

We ate everything from Italian to enchiladas de chile verde from Sinaloa and Tampico; once when we took a family vacation to Puerto Vallarta. At my gringo dad’s we have nopales, though we are too lazy to cook them.

I always felt these interrogations were not the mere curiosity of an acquaintance, but rather an act to “catch” me slipping up, a way to prove I was indeed “white.” I’ve felt excluded, not white or brown enough to satisfy society. When I discovered the word Chicana, I embraced it and have identified as such since.

In college, I learned the word Nepantla, a Nahuatl (natives of Central Mexico) word meaning something like being in-between or the middle, used by the first Mestizos (SpanishIndian mix) to mean “we are from neither here nor there;” somos nepantla (for more info go to chicanoart.org/nepantla.html).

I have always felt stuck in between cultures, in between worlds. When I think of a “real” Mexican, I think of the people who lived and resisted during the Mexican Revolution; they were some Tough Gente (people). I think of living on a rancho, in a simpler time. In all honesty I imagine a real Mexican to be someone like a character in the movie “Como Agua Para Chocolate/Like Water For Chocolate.”

You know, living the charro lifestyle. Living a life like someone in a corrido (ballad). I think of Mexican values, traditions and dialects.

My family was very ‘Americanized’ and were encouraged to speak English and adopt ‘American’ culture. I grew up learning Spanish from my Grandma, who spoke a Calo/ slight-Tex-Mex mix; continued on next page

He perdido la cuenta de las veces que he escuchado que me digan eso. ¡Qué va! Incluso mi abuela me lo ha dicho.

Pero ¿Qué es lo que significa ser mexicano de verdad?

Cuando era adolescente, conocía a una que siempre estaba cuestionando mi mexicanidad: ¿Qué cocinó mi mamá para la cena? ¿De qué parte de México era mi familia? ¿Estuve alguna vez en México? ¿Teníamos nopales en nuestro patio? Comíamos desde enchiladas italianas a de chile verde, de Sinaloa y Tampico; una vez vacacionamos en familia en Puerto Vallarta. En casa de mi papá gringo tenemos nopales, aunque somos demasiado flojos como para cocinarlos.

Siempre sentí que estos interrogatorios

pasaban de la mera curiosidad de un conocido, sino eran para “pillarme” y probar que era, en verdad, “blanca”. Me sentía excluida, ni suficientemente blanca ni cobriza para contentar a nadie . Cuando descubrí la palabra Chicana me aferré a ella y me he identificado así desde entonces.

En la universidad aprendí el término nepantla, palabra náhuatl (nativos de México Central) que significa algo como entremedio, utilizado por los primeros mestizos (mezcla hispano-indígena) que significa “no somos ni de aquí ni de allá”: somos nepantla (para mayor información visite chicanoart.org/ nepantla.html).

Siempre me sentí atrapada entre culturas, entro dos mundos. Cuando imagino un mexicano “de verdad” pienso en gente que vivió y resistió durante la Revolución Mexicana; gente aguantadora. Lo imagino viviendo en un rancho, en un pasado más simple. Honestamente lo imagino como un personaje de la película Como Agua Para Chocolate. O sea, viviendo una vida charra, como la de un corrido. Pienso en valores mexicanos, tradiciones y dialectos.

Mi familia fue muy ‘americanizada’ y nos instaban a hablar en inglés y adoptar la cultura ‘americana’. Crecí aprendiendo español con mi abuela, que hablaba una mezcla calo-tex-mex.

No aprendí un español propio hasta que tomé un curso en la preparatoria. Crecí sabiendo muy poco de mi cultura; mis padres era de la Generación X criados en la pobreza, medían el éxito en dinero y mostraban afecto con regalos.

La mayor parte de la historia y cultura mexicana que aprendí me llegó de los viejos, veteranos, que recordaban y honraban el movimiento Brown Pride (Orgullo de ser Cobrizo) de los 1970s. Muchas veces el mexicano mira al chicano/a como vulgar y encuentran necesario cuestionar su autenticidad.

Entonces ¿QUÉ TAN MEXICANA SOY? Generalmente llamo sweaters a las playeras.

Pluralizo palabras como candies and chocolates. Venero La Virgencita. Me encanta Frida Khalo. Puedo hacer un arroz con leche mortal.

I didn’t learn “proper” Spanish until I took a course in high school. I knew little about my culture growing up; my parents were Generation Xer’s who grew up in poverty, equated success with money and used gifts to show affection.

Much of Mexico’s history and culture I learned came from the old-timers, veteranos, who remembered and honored the Brown Pride movement of the 70s. Chicanos/as are often viewed by Mexicans as “trashy” and subject to interrogations of authenticity.

SO HOW MEXICAN AM I? I often refer to sweat shirts as sweaters. I pluralize words like candies and chocolates. I revere La Virgencita. I love Frida Khalo. I can make arroz con leche that will blow your socks off. Arroz y frijoles is the most perfect food combination ever. I love carne asada. I am Catholic. I love Selena, Ramón Ayala y Paquita del Barrio. I have enormous pride for Sinaloa. I love chiles

rellenos. I can (and often do) The Grito. The Cinta, Chancla, La Llorona and the chupacabra strike white-hot fear into my heart. I love my abuelita. I put limón y sal on everything.

To this day, I believe that if I misbehave a man will steal me. I love horchata. I love to dance.

I like to party. I love my “Confleis” and watch Sábado Gigante. Burritos are LIFE. I was OBSESSED with Amigas y Rivales. My family came to the States from Mexico.

But really, what makes me Mexican is not where my family is from or how perfectly I speak Spanish or what I eat. I am Mexican because I have taken the time to educate myself on this history of the people I descend from. I am Mexican because I take pride in the fact that my grandma and grandpa sacrificed everything to give me a better chance at life. I know my roots; I know where I am from, and where I am going.

A shot worth fighting for

Un round que vale la pena

he road to the 2014 National Golden Gloves is lined with hundreds of pitfalls and self-indulgent preposterous temptations.

Young men from all over the country arrived filled with dreams of victory built on sweat and strong hearts. They glared at each other like gladiators in the Roman arena. They strutted their stuff, flexed their muscles, inhaled and strolled past security guards towards perceived fame. Tension filled the air and threatened to explode into violence as the young lions growled, studied and measured each other, perceiving strengths and weaknesses. Disguised Jorge Martínez behind shields of arrogance and youth, they glided on Stockton, CA imagined fumes of grandeur, like gods in a Hollywood fantasy.

Only, there was no make-believe scenario here.

There were no phony heroes or felons awaiting directions. They would soon deliberately wage battle, knowing boxing maybe a sport outside the ring; but inside of it, it’s a war.

Fully committed, few showed any concern. They drifted on clouds of adrenaline and testosterone usually only found in army barracks and police stations. The noise and sparkle of brilliant lights, hustle and bustle of Las Vegas never distracted them. Each was filled with expectations and lethal determination to take home the championship. A national amateur title would rush them from obscurity to fame, a possible shot at the Olympic team, and wealth.

As the moment of truth grew closer, the room almost crackled with excitement. Each step brought them closer to contact as the energy rose, until the bell finally unleashing these young lions sounded. A low murmur arose, then a momentary silence left only the sound of gloved hands landing, and then a joyous release of warriors doing what they love. An explosion of fury and passion followed.

Few writers have managed to capture their story in words or photographs. These young men are the next generation of champions to add their legacy to boxing history. They leave large tracks only the worthy can follow. It was my privilege to be ringside and share their challenge.

Llegaban jóvenes de toda la nación cargados de sueños de victoria nacidos del sudor y un corazón fuerte. Se lanzaban miradas como gladiadores en la arena romana. Se paseaban ufanos, flexionando los músculos, inhalando, pasando frente a los guardas camino a una supuesta fama.

La tensión llenaba el aire y amenazaba explotar mientras estos jóvenes leones rugían, se estudiaban y medían con la vista, percibiendo fortalezas y debilidades. Disfrazados tras escudos de arrogancia y juventud, flotaban en imaginaria grandeza, como dioses en una fantasía hollywoodesca.

Solo que este no era un escenario de utilería.

No había héroes de papel ni villanos esperando instrucciones. Pronto estarían deliberadamente entrando en batalla, sabiendo que el box, fuera del ring, es un deporte, pero dentro, es una guerra.

Totalmente entregados, pocos mostraban preocupación. Vagaban en nubes de adrenalina y testosterona, algo que solo ocurre normalmente en barracas militares y estaciones policiales. Ni el ruido y destello de las luces, ni el ajetreo de Las Vegas los distraía. Cada uno estaba colmado de expectativas y determinación por llevarse la copa a casa. Un título aficionado nacional los elevaría de la total oscuridad a la fama, la posibilidad de formar parte del equipo olímpico, y la riqueza.

A medida que se acercaba la hora de la verdad, la sala casi chisporroteaba de excitación. Se sentía la energía que cada paso aumentaba, hasta que sonó la campana que soltaba a las jóvenes fieras. Primero fue un sordo murmullo, luego un momentáneo silencio apenas rotor por los guantes que encontraban un cuerpo, y luego el loco deshago del guerrero que hace lo que más le gusta. Una explosión de furia y pasión fue lo que siguió.

Pocos escritores han logrado capturar su historia en palabras o fotografías. Estos jóvenes son la próxima generación de campeones que agregarán su legado a la historia pugilista. Dejan grandes huellas que solo el merecedor puede seguir. Fue un privilegio estar a la orilla del cuadrilátero y compartir sus desafíos.

unca me vi en la penosa necesidad de comprobar que era ciudadano. Sí tuve que demostrar que no lo era.

Todo empezó con una ocurrencia. En el formulario, el cuadro que indica US Citizen, me increpó, desafiante. Lo marqué con una X mayúscula, con intención que se derramara, para evitar titubeos inesperados, dudas, sospechas. La ancianita tomó el documento; extendió el brazo izquierdo echando la cabeza hacia atrás para no tener que molestarse en deslizarse los anteojos –cansados de subir el tabique nasal una vez más. Recorrió con el lápiz cada renglón, sin pausar, hasta que la X la obligó a frenar. Agachó la cabeza, los lentes prácticamente en las fosas nasales, alzó los ojos, interrogantes, drásticos. “You’re a US citizen?” “Lles, mem,” respondí. “But you have an accent,” dijo poniendo papel y lápiz sobre el escritorio. Con la mano se puso los lentes en su lugar y se reclinó en la silla, adoptando esa postura que otorga estar en ese lado del mostrador. Pero, antes que empezara su interrogatorio, adelanté los acontecimientos: “Llujabenaxentú”. Se lo dije con una sonrisa –creo– cínica, obviamente sin proponérmelo. El efecto, de cualquier manera, fue positivo puesto que la viejita rebeló toda su simpatía en ese momento: “That’s true! Everybody has an accent. I’m from Texas,” dijo con toda naturalidad. Plasmó una rúbrica al pie del documento y agregó contenta, “OK.” Ahora con luz verde me entró el deseo de aprender inglés de forma acelerada, lo cual me hizo considerar vivir en algún lugar donde no hubiera montones de hispanohablantes, es decir, que no fuera Los Ángeles. Como suele suceder, se presentó la casualidad como señal divina: una amiga me ofreció ser huésped en casa de su madre. Me arrendaría un cuarto y yo podría formar parte de la familia y experimentar mi nueva cultura. Crucé todo el continente hasta arribar en Beverly, Massachusetts.

Embestido con mi nueva identidad me dirigí a la oficina de desempleo donde me atendieron cortesmente, como corresponde a un ciudadano ejemplar: nada de preámbulos ni preguntas innecesarias.

“You’re a US Citizen. Very well, take this paper with you. Good luck now!” El buen trato se agradece. La dirección se encontraba en Salem —antigua ciudad de las brujas.

Me presenté, dispuesto a realizar cualquier labor que me indicaran.

La casona de un azul brillante parecía recién pintada. El letrero a la entrada decía Lazarakis Painting Company. El supervisor, quien me dijo sin más: yo soy italiano (seguro quería un aplauso), inmediatamente me condujo a una casa vacía no muy lejos de ahí y me dio instrucciones para pintar con rapidez y precisión. Más tarde me topé con dos pintores que hablaban un idioma que no entendía. Su fisonomía no era diferente a la mía, incluso la misma estatura, el mismo color de piel, ojos cafés, pelo ondulado, etc. Me hablaron pensando que era uno de ellos: “Tikañis”.

I am a citizen...

I

had never experienced the painful necessity of proving I was a U.S. Citizen. But recently, I had to demonstrate I wasn’t.

It all started with an idea. On the form the box indicating “US Citizen”, confronted me. I marked it with a capital X, purposely making it spill over the sides, to avoid any doubts. The old lady took the document; she extended her left arm bringing her head back so she wouldn’t have to lift her eyeglasses.

She went through line by line of the form with her pencil without pausing, till the X brought her to a sudden stop. She lowered her head, her eyeglasses edging her nostrils, lifted her questioning, stern eyes and asked, “You’re a US Citizen?” “Jess, Mem’,” I replied.

“But you have an accent,” she declared placing pencil and paper on her desk.

With her right hand, she pushed her eyeglasses to their proper place; leaned forward in her chair. As she began to speak, I cut her short: “Jewhabenaccenttwo.” I smiled while I said it but, without really wanting to, it came out somewhat cynical.

The effect, however, was positive because the old lady, revealed all of her sympathy: “That’s true! Everybody has an accent. I’m from Texas,” she said naturally. She signed at the bottom of the document and said happily, “OK.” Having been given the green light, the need to learn English quickly, overwhelmed me, and I began to think seriously about living in a place without lots of Spanish speakers, that is, away from Los Angeles. As it often happens, serendipity appeared like a divine sign: a friend asked me to be a guest at her mother’s house. She offered room and board; I could be part of the family and experience my new culture. I crossed the entire continent all the way to Beverly, Massachusetts.

Given my new identity, I headed to the unemployment office where I was helped rather courteously, as any exemplary citizen deserves: no preamble or unnecessary questions. “You’re a US Citizen. Very well, take this paper with you. Good luck now!” Good service is always appreciated. The address took me to Salem —the ancient city of witches.

I showed up ready to perform any job I was asked to do. The big, shiny blue house looked freshly painted.

spelled Lazarakis Painting Company. The super visor an nounced without further ado: “I’m Italian” (I wondered if he

expected applause), and immediately took me to an empty house not far away and gave me instructions to paint quickly and with precision.

Later, I came across two painters who were speaking a language I could not understand.

Their physiognomy was not different from mine, the same height, same skin color, brown eyes, wavy hair, etc. They addressed me thinking I was one of them: “Tikañis”. Making all kinds of signs I told them I did not understand.

That did not set well with them. I think they thought they found a countryman who wanted to conceal his origins refusing to speak his native language. They spluttered some words or expressions in their language that forced me to answer sternly: “I thon anderstan guat jur saijin.” But they kept on talking, inflexibly. I resorted to speaking Spanish: “No entiendo nada”. Disconcerted, they finally realized I did not speak Greek —and I realized they did not speak English. From then on I started learning not English, but Greek. They would say: “Tikañis” and I replied: “Kalá”.

Besides getting along with my Greek colleagues —who adopted me as one of them and would kindly call me malaka, skatá, among other things— I turned out to be a good employee –so I thought– loyal to my errands: bring the coffee and doughnuts in the morning, paint a little, bring lunch, paint a little and, last but not least, bring the beer. We had already painted a great number of buildings, houses, and schools.

One day, the lady owner of the company called me into her office: “Come in, please.

I need to talk to you,” she said in a friendly voice. She rested her elbows on the desk leaning her body forward; clasped her hands and said: “Tomorrow we have a job scheduled at Fort Devens Army Base. Since you are the only US Citizen among our crew, we’re going to send you there.” I told her it was fine. I left in silence, bewildered. It was neither the moment nor the place to confront any authority, much less a military one.

The next morning I received a call from Miss Lazarakis, who was very concerned: “We’re waiting for you,” she stated. I lied telling her I already had another job that paid more. “I’ll pay you even more,” she said. I did not accept.

there to steal away the job from model citizens like me. However, the men were already hired employees and eyed me with some distrust.

The supervisor on duty asked me: “Are you looking for a job?” “Jes, jes, am painter” I said, to which one of the men interjected: “You’re not Puerto Rican… are you?” He said it as if they were undesirables. “Our accents always give us away, in a flattering or repulsive way”, I thought.

After a few months I went back to Los Angeles. With time I got used to my new status, but felt incomplete, nevertheless. I needed some kind of proof that would certify I was a citizen. The opportunity came at a shopping mall where members of a highly conservative political party cornered me: “Here, you look like a US Citizen. You’re a US Citizen, right?” Without allowing me time to respond, given their urgency to recruit and get paid, they ordered: “Register to vote.” Therefore, I capitulated and became a new registered voter.

Days later, I received a card that granted me the right of every citizen: suffrage, the right to vote.

Years later, a legislation that offered amnesty was signed into law. I applied for it and that is how I obtained legal residence. The social security number I was assigned was legitimate, and with that, I opened an account at a local bank. The manager took my card and asked me to wait. Upon her return she inquired if I had family in Missouri. God knows where that place is. “No miss, I don’t have any family in Missouri,” I said. I was completely indignant by what came next. “Someone is using this same Social Security number,” she said. “That is impossible!” I declared, adding, “This is a brand new number, just released; it’s legitimate,” I reiterated.

On another occasion, I received a summons for jury duty, which I did not like at all.

I postponed that task for months on end till they told me I would be held in contempt of court if I did not appear. I had no choice but to show up to court and exercise my duty: participate in the judicial process. What a pain, it felt suffocating being among so many people whose greatest desire was to go home.

I was the first in line. I bravely walked over to the window where the instructions are given and confronted the clerk: “Excuse me, sir, I’m nat a US Citizen.” He looked at me confused and yelled, “What? What do you mean?” “I gat dis sammons, bat I’m nat a US Citizen,” I repeated. “So how in the hell did you get this? Only citizens can register to vote, and only citizens get these,” he asked shaking the summons in his hands. “Wel sir, I thid nat no 26 Joaquín JUNE/JULY 2014

He let out a profanity and, agitated, asked: “Do you have a green card?! Show me your green card!” I showed him my card. “Get the hell out of here!” he mumbled in disgust.

compatriota que pretendía ocultar su origen negándose a hablar su idioma materno. Farfullaron algunas palabras u expresiones en su idioma que me obligaron a responderles con tono severo: “Ai don anderstand juat llur selling.” Pero ellos seguían hablando, inflexibles.

Me vi forzado a hablar español: “No entiendo nada”. Desconcertados, por fin se dieron cuenta que no hablaba griego —y yo me di cuenta que ellos no hablaban inglés. A partir de ese momento empecé mis lecciones no de inglés, sino de griego. Me decían: “Tikañis” y yo respondía: “Kalá”.

Además de llevarme bien con los colegas griegos, quienes me adoptaron como uno más de los suyos pues me llamaban con cariño malaka, skatá, entre otras cosas, resulté ser un buen trabajador –eso pensaba yo– fiel a mis labores: traer café con donas por la mañana, pintar un poquito, traer el almuerzo, pintar un poquito y, por último, traer la cerveza.

Habíamos ya pintado multitud de edificios, casas, escuelas. Así es que la experiencia me estaba llevando por buen camino. Un día, la dueña de la compañía me llamó a su oficina: “Come in, please, I need to talk to you,” habló con voz muy amable. Posó los codos sobre el escritorio inclinando el cuerpo hacia delante y dijo: “Tomorrow we have a job scheduled at Fort Devens Army Base. Since you are the only US Citizen among our crew, we’re going to send you there.” Le dije que estaba bien pero renuncié en silencio y me retiré bastante aturdido. No era el momento ni el lugar para enfrentarme a ninguna autoridad, mucho menos militar.

La mañana siguiente recibí una llamada de urgencia de la señora Lazarakis, preocupadísima: “We’re waiting for you,” sentenció. Mentí diciéndole que ya tenía otro trabajo que pagaba más. “I’ll pay you more,” dijo. No acepté.

No muy lejos se encontraba otra compañía de pintores de brocha gorda. Allá me dirigí.

Había un grupo de hombres aglomerados en la entrada. Me di prisa pensando que estaban allí para robar el trabajo a los ciudadanos modelos como yo. Sin embargo, los hombres ya eran empleados en esa compañía y me miraron con cierta desconfianza. El supervisor en turno me preguntó: “Are you looking for a job?”

you?” con un tono como si ellos fueran unos indeseables. Los acentos nos delatan, son halagadores o repugnantes.

Después de algunos meses volví a Los Ángeles. Con el tiempo me fui acostumbrando a mi nuevo estatus, solo que estaba incompleto.

Necesitaba algún tipo de comprobante que certificara mi ciudadanía. La oportunidad se presentó en un centro comercial donde integrantes del partido más conservador me acosaron: “Here, you look like a US Citizen.

You’re a US Citizen, right?” Sin darme tiempo a responder, debido a la urgencia de inscribir y cobrar, continuaron: “Register to vote.” Por lo tanto, con tal poder de convencimiento, claudiqué quedando en la nómina como un nuevo elector. Días después me llegó la tarjeta que me otorgaba ejercer el derecho de todo ciudadano: el sufragio.

Años más tarde se aprobó una ley que dio amnistía. Me arropé a ella y así conseguí la residencia legal. El número de seguro que me asignaron era legítimo. Con ese número abrí una cuenta corriente en un banco local.

La gerente tomó mi tarjeta y me indicó que esperara. Cuando volvió me preguntó que si yo tenía familia en Missouri. Sabrá Dios dónde está ese lugar. No señorita, no tengo familia en Missouri, dije. Lo que vino después me indignó por completo. “Alguien está usando este mismo número”, dijo ella. “No puede ser”, declaré, “es un número recién emitido, nuevo, legítimo”, reiteré.

En otra ocasión, recibí un citatorio para fungir como jurado, lo cual no fue de mi agrado. Pospuse esa tarea por meses y más meses hasta que me amenazaron con citatorio a juzgado. De modo que tuve que presentarme al tribunal y ejercer la otra gran misión ciudadana: participar en el proceso jurídico.

Qué molestia, me sentía sofocado entre tanta gente cuyo máximo deseo era irse a su casa.

Yo era el primero. Entonces se me ocurrió salir de ahí cuanto antes. Caminé envalentonado a la ventanilla donde daban las indicaciones y espeté al funcionario: “Exquius mi, ser, aim nat a US Citizen.” Me miró desconcertado y gritó, “What? What do you mean?” “I gat dis sammons, bat aim nat a US Citizen,” repetí. “So how in the hell you got this? Only citizens can register to vote, and only citizens get these,” decía mientras sujetaba molesto el tarjetón entre sus manos. “Güel ser, ai did nat no yu jad tu bi a citizen to rellister tu bout. I guas a clandestin güen I did it, I diden no.”

Pronunció una procacidad indecible y preguntó agitado: “Do you have a green card?! Show me your green card!” Le mostré mi tarjeta, lo que nunca había hecho en mi vida y, al mismo tiempo, comprobé que no era ciudadano. “Get the hell out of here,” me dijo.

Puerto Ricans make a distant 9.2 percent, followed by Cubans (3.5), Salvadorans (3.3) and Dominicans (2.8). The rest are other Central Americans, South Americans or people with other Hispanic/Latino origins.

i nombre estaba tat uado en su brazo. Se arremangó la camisa color caqui para que lo viera. Sus pantalones eran color caqui también, con un marcado pliegue a lo largo de cada pierna. Mi abuela Delia dice que vestía idéntico a la última vez que lo vio hacía ya unos veinte años atrás, el tirano de la familia, ahora un vato loco, todo amarillento por una falencia hepática.

Los nombres de los otros niños estaban allí también: Michelle, Michael, Marisela. Pero mi nombre estaba primero, recalcó.

“Te ves diferente a mi otra hija”, dijo, finalmente bajándose la manga.

Estábamos sentados en unas de esas sillas plásticas de patio baratas, en la orilla de la alberca de mi tía Yolanda en unos de esos suburbios de Los Ángeles. Fijé la mirada en el agua cristalina. El olor a cloro mareaba mi cabeza. Estaba casi fuera de mi cuerpo. Me vi levantarme y zambullirme en el agua azul, nadando con furia, alejándome.

“Tú… me gusta lo que veo”, habló nuevamente, regresándome a la realidad, “Marisela… ella es”, se detuvo y con sus brazos curvados se rodeó el cuerpo mientras inflaba las mejillas.

Nacida de su carne, casi quería que me agradara. Empezó admitiendo que todo lo que mi mamá probablemente dijo sobre él era verdad. Está bien, pensé, pero luego esto, esta comparación, yo, arriba del mostrador, inspeccionada de arriba a abajo.

Tal vez no era su intención mirarme o sonar lascivo. Podía como ver que así era, pero ya no importaba. También pude ver que no había cambiado demasiado tampoco. Simplemente se estaba muriendo.
