Stockton’s Re-Branding Effort

N

orth Star Destination Strategies seems to have done a better job in finding out about the negative views people express about Stockton than in suggesting how the city should be re-branded.

According to a story in The Central Valley Business Journal on November 30 (“Stockton Assesses Good, Bad in Re-branding”), Stocktonians are more critical than outsiders of their own community, but this should not stop us from promoting such an important project.

The fact that residents of San Jose more often (41%) express a favorable attitude toward Stockton than do those in Sacramento (just 14%) may be a key to the concentration of negative views. To a casual observer TV reporting about Stockton seems much more common by the Sacramento-based stations than by those in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, and as many studies show about local news reporting across the nation, most of the attention focuses on crime, violence and bad news about local government and the economy.

One would hope that a major effort at rebranding Stockton should include an outreach program to reshape the way major regional media, especially Sacramento TV stations cover our city.

The approach to re-branding suggested

by North Star Destination Strategies appears to ignore this need. Yet even more important, the re-branding concept actually suggested comes off as amorphous, ill focused and not very ambitious. See for yourself: “For those seeking more ease to life and leisure, location-rich Stockton — home to California’s largest inland seaport, oldest university, largest urban core with room to grow, and some of its richest agricultural and dairy ground — is a canopy of creativity and ingenuity instilled by centuries of diverse, hopeful, resilient and quirky characters making every breezy day on the California Delta more interesting, unexpected and full of possibility.”

s el f : what enterprising tech whiz or wheeler and dealer from the capitol will be attracted to breezy leisure and a roomy urban core with rich ground? The image suggested sounds more eye-catching to the homeless, and we probably already have enough of them.

Despite the disappointing survey image, we actually have a lot going for us in Stockton.

What we have to do is start emphasizing our assets, as the San Joaquin Partners and others have been doing. Yet we need to go even further than they have by accentuating our major assets. It is also important to lay out our greatest virtues even before we mention the intriguing side stories about the oldest university, the diversity of the population, the land of Cool Hand Luke, or the legendary Thule fog and Delta breezes, lest these become the main event. So what can we really crow about?

Stockton is at the hub of the great San Joaquin-Sacramento River Valley and the very heart of the Golden State. Our great inland seaport connects continued on next page

Según cita un artículo impreso en la edición del 30 de noviembre de The Central Valley Business Journal (“Stockton Evalúa los Positivo, lo Negativo de una Nueva Imagen”), los estocktonianos son más críticos de su comunidad que los afuerinos. Pero esto no debiese detenernos para avanzar tan importante tarea.

El hecho que los residentes de San José tengan una predisposición más favorable respecto a Stockton (41%) que aquellos de Sacramento (solo 14%) puede ser una clave en la concentración de percepciones negativas. Para el observador casual, pareciera que los reportajes televisivos sobre Stockton son mucho más comunes entre las estaciones de TV de Sacramento que entre las de la Bahía o del Valle del Silicio; y muchos estudios revelan que la atención de los noticieros de TV se enfocan mayormente en el crimen, violencia y las malas noticias sobre el gobierno y la economía locales. Uno imaginaría que cualquier iniciativa importante que busca rescatar la imagen de Stockton debiese empezar con un plan para reencauzar a los principales medios de comunicación regionales —especialmente la cobertura televisiva de nuestra ciudad por las estaciones de Sacramento.

La estrategia que sugiere North Star Destination Strategies para re-inventar la imagen de Stockton pareciera ignorar esta situación. Aun más importante, el concepto de nueva imagen que sugieren se nota amorfo, desenfocado y sin ambición. the most fertile Delta region on the Pacific shore of the Americas to the hungry people of the world who thrive on the great flood of food, from almonds, walnuts, wine, cherries, and dairy products to grains, hay and corn silage, that the rich soils produce. These are the images our brand needs to convey. And don’t let anyone get away with calling it the Sacramento Delta.

Stockton is more figuratively and historically than actually The great food port of the Pacific, but its identity should still be anchored on what the region does most, and that is produce food1. If the Ganges Delta is known as a cradle of eastern religion and river bathing, the Mekong for its great freshwater fisheries, the Mississippi for New Orleans, the Nile for its reeds, and China’s Pearl River for growing cities, then we should trumpet our Delta and its fulcrum city for their role in feeding the world’s people. To name a few: • The hundreds of miles of inland waterways include a deep water channel for ocean going vessels to reach 80 miles inland —to the crossroads of central California.

• The Delta serves not just agriculture, but also great fisheries, inGene Bigler, PhD credible recreational opWriter & consultant portunities, the Pacific on global affairs, flyway for the continent’s former professor, birds, and the remarkable retired diplomat but little known inland canal system to convey water to the thirsty people and farms of southern California.

• The world class wineries here don’t lead just to more wineries as they do elsewhere in California. Here they usher us to California’s historic gold country, the legendary ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the gateway to breathtaking Yosemite National Park.

• In fact, the whole world is nuts about this place, but most of it just doesn’t know why2.

For most of the last eighty some years Stockton has been used more for imports than for exporting food or anything else3. However, focusing the region’s identity on the food-port connection should raise the value of re-branding to a much higher level. It has the potential to help revive entrepreneurship needed to develop the value-added activities related to the relative abundance of food and the unique transportation hub the city provides. Re-branding the city mainly to attract visitors seems a bit faint-hearted and a waste of potential.

—largely railroad and highway connections— have already spurred impressive growth and record export volumes. The port now seems poised to be a greater engine for our community than it has ever been.

Yet in contrast, West Louisville, Kentucky, transformed its sleepy Ohio River terminal into what has been called “the nation’s largest food hub” by investing more in warehousing, food processing and support for product innovation in its riverfront port facilities to exploit its connection to the surrounding food producing region. Their hitherto modest port actually became a major engine of the economy, and the focus of a new identity for the region.

The Louisville experience should be an encouraging precedent for Stockton. Our city has much greater advantages to exploit than Louisville, as well as the progressive leadership already in place at our port. Maybe getting this re-branding thing right will enable us to restore the bloom to our rose, if you will pardon the mixed metaphors, because knowing what to call it will enable us to support it and grow it much better than we ever have.

de crecimiento, y uno de los suelos más ricos para la agricultura y la lechería— es un lienzo abierto a la creatividad y al ingenio, resultado de siglos y personajes diversos, esperanzados, resistentes y extravagantes, lo que hace cada relajado día en el Delta de California un poco más interesante, inesperado y lleno de posibilidades.

Después de leer esto uno se tiene que preguntar: ¿A qué tipo de empresario en tecnología o as en el capitolio puede atraer un relajado esparcimiento y un espacioso centro urbano con suelo fértil? La imagen parece más invitante para un indigente, y probablemente ya tenemos suficientes de esos.

A pesar de esta triste imagen en Stockton tenemos, realmente, bastante de que sentirnos orgullosos. Lo que debemos hacer es comenzar a enfatizar lo que tenemos, como San Joaquin Partners (Colaboración San Joaquín) y otros lo han ya hecho. No obstante tenemos que ir más lejos que ellos en acentuar nuestros principales recursos. Es también importante mencionar nuestras más grandes virtudes antes de datos secundarios como la universidad más antigua, la diversidad de nuestra población, la tierra de la película ‘Lucky Hand Luke’, o de la legendaria niebla thule o las brisas del Delta… a menos que estas se conviertan en el plato fuerte.

The College Admissions’ Game

Getting Your Game On

G

aining admission to a selective college like Harvard, Stanford, or MIT is not based on chance or luck. It’s an ultracompetitive, time-intensive game that begins in preschool and requires significant advantages, knowledge, and capital.

How much is elite college admissions like a game? Let’s look at the players and how this game is played, step-by-step: W ho’s I nvited to Play? In order to compete one must (a) know that such a game exists; (b) be invited to the game; and (c) be qualified to play in it. It’s a zero-sum game —where each applicant is competing for a fixed number of offers of admission. With only a few spots at the game table, game contenders get weeded out in various stages: Round One – School Site, GATE and Tracking. Depending on where the student is enrolled, as early as 1st grade, teacher recommendations are submitted for most school’s Gifted and Talented Education programs (GATE). But – statistically, Latinos and Blacks are disproportionately underrepresented in GATE programs. For most, but not all players, the selective college admissions game begins with these early determinants – where the student attends elementary school and whether or not they are tracked into “gifted” programs.

Round Two – Mathematics. In middle school, some students will be tracked into college-bound curriculum and others not. One of the significant qualifiers for this round of the game is mathematics. Statistically, if a student is not enrolled in advanced or accelerated math (exposed to Algebra I) by 8th grade, their odds of selective college admissions dramatically decreases. Elite boarding schools know this —they spend considerable resources ensuring their 8th grade students are on track for Algebra I in 8th grade, continued on next page

a admisión a una Universidad exclusiva como Harvard, Stanford o MIT no depende de suerte ni casualidad. Es un juego ultra competitivo y de dedicación que comienza en el preescolar y requiere de grandes ventajas, conocimiento y capital ¿Cuánto se parece el ingreso a una universidad de prestigio a un juego? Analicemos a los jugadores y cómo se juega el partido, paso por paso: ¿Quiénes son los invitados al juego? Para competir uno debe (a) saber que existe el juego; (b) ser invitado a jugar; (c) reunir los requisitos del participante. Es un juego “de suma cero” —o sea, ofrece una cantidad limitada de cupos, los participantes se van eliminando en varias etapas y el que gana un cupo, deja fuera a otro: Primer Ronda – Escuela, GATE y Canalización. Depende de dónde se matricula

al niño. En la mayoría de las escuelas —empezando en el 1er grado— la maestra somete recomendaciones para inclusión en el programa para superdotados (GATE).

No obstante, las estadísticas muestran que los negros y los latinos son los que menos representación tienen en estos programas.

Para muchos —aunque no para todos— el juego de admisión a universidades de elite ya comienza con estos tempranos determinantes… dónde el estudiante va a la primaria, y si a los estudiantes se les canaliza o no a los programas para superdotados.

Segunda Ronda – Matemáticas. En la escuela intermedia a algunos estudiantes se les canalizará a planes de estudios orientados a la universidad. A otros no. Uno de los principales seleccionadores en esta ronda del juego son las matemáticas. Según las estadísticas, si a un estudiante no se le inscribe en matemáticas avanzadas o aceleradas (por ej., Algebra I) para el 8º grado, sus posibilidades de admisión en una universidad selectiva se reducen drásticamente. Los internados de elite saben esto y dedican considerables recursos para que sus alumnos estén cursando Algebra I para el 8º grado y, para el 12º grado, Cálculo Avanzado.

En esta ronda se eliminan muchos jugadores.

Tercera Ronda – Programas integrales AP/IB. La próxima barrera el currículo especializado. Los aceptados en universidades de elite toman, en promedio, 8 cursos avanzados (AP/IB) en la preparatoria. Sin embargo la mayoría de los estudiantes negros y latinos están matriculados en preparatorias de recursos limitados que carecen estos currículos y, de haberlos, o no se les encauza a estos cursos o no se les informa del papel que juegan en admisiones. hence, AP Calculus by the senior year of high school. More players are eliminated in this round.

Round Three – Comprehensive AP/IB Programs. The next hurdle is a specialized curriculum. Admitted students to elite universities are taking, on average, 8 AP courses in high school. But, Latino and Black students are disproportionately enrolled in low-resourced high schools that lack this curriculum or, if they do, many of our students are not tracked into these courses, or are misinformed as it relates to admission. When private high schools have upwards of 25 courses and low-resourced schools have 2 or 3, the game is skewed.

Round Four – The Big Four. Does the player have a strategy to nail the four components of (1) graduation requirements; (2) A-G requirements; (3) selective college requirements; and (4) strategic curriculum for their intended major? When most Latino students are situated in high schools with a 500 and often 900:1 ratio of students to counselors, what are their odds of receiving a four-prong strategy to nail this round?

Round Five – The Intangibles. The next stage of the game involves strategies unavailable in a high school handbook. These strategies yield the highest odds of admission after factoring in the academic portfolio. However, most students are simply unaware of these game strategies related to intangible qualities such as: Innovation Leadership Intellectual Imagination Extracurricular Distinction Strength of Character Ability to Inspire Others Creativity How does a student learn about these intangible qualities? Unless the student attends a highly resourced high school or lives in a community that shares this type of capital, it’s hit or miss whether a contender will learn these prized moves.

Round Six – College Entrance Exams.

In this round students are placed in a national arena to compete with other students for college entrance exams including SAT, ACT, Subject Tests, and AP Exams. Affluent parents hire private coaches or pay $1,000 for test prep programs. Whereas, students from lowincome, marginalized communities are often left to figure out this high stakes process on their own. Some “wing it” and hope for the best, while others are simply unaware (or learn too late) about these qualifying exams.

Round Seven – Letters of Recommendation. All things being equal, an exceptional letter of recommendation can enhance a 6 Joaquín JANUARY 2016

student’s odds of admission. This is the round where it matters what is said, and by whom.

College counselors from affluent schools know how to pair the right teacher with the right information, to help their students stand out.

Round Eight – Early Action & Strategizing Shortlist. In this round, students must know how to hedge their bets by selecting colleges to yield the greatest odds of admission.

They’ve learned the advantage of pairing their academic profile with a pool of pre-determined colleges. Here, the game might be over if the student does not pick the right colleges to apply to.

Round Nine – Articulating the Story & Interviewing. For the few contenders still in the game, there’s a final game strategy before pressing the “submit” key. This involves persuasive writing, how to market strengths, the nuances of what selective colleges seek in a masterful essay, and how to play up those traits in 650 words or less. Affluent families hire essay coaches, or rely on exceptional AP English curriculum to help their students nail the personal statements; whereas students attending low-resourced high schools are not afforded this luxury. Even with the help of an English teacher, an exceptional statement for selective colleges goes beyond a grammatically correct or well-structured essay.

Coaching is key, but it comes with a price tag.

QuetzalMama Lastly, students may Roxanne Ocampo go through a round of San Marcos, CA interviews. Coached students know how to dress, what to say, and how to prepare for interviews. Some affluent schools host mock interviews, or provide coaching and mentoring. However, students attending low-resourced schools are often situated in communities where few, if any, have interviewed with a selective university.

Remember, I’m only speaking in the context of selective admissions. Don’t assume I’ve conceded that our students are doomed, or that the situation is hopeless. I spend 100% of my work hours helping students navigate the selective admissions process because I think we can win this game.

My point is that in order to gain critical mass at these institutions, we cannot rely on faith, luck, or chance to win. We must be pragmatic, keenly focused on how to leverage strategies, how to timely and methodically approach this process, how to maximize opportunities, and how to influence positive change in our student’s trajectory to a selective university. I’m definitely a player in this game.

Cuando un latino estudia en una secundaria donde hay un orientador académico por cada 500 —o a veces 900— estudiantes ¿Cuáles son sus posibilidades de que se le guíe en una estrategia de cuatro canales que le ayude a pasar esta ronda?

Quinta Ronda – Los Intangibles. La próxima etapa del juego envuelve técnicas que no incluyen en manual de secundaria alguno. Estas técnicas brindan las mejores posibilidades de admisión después de considerar la carpeta académica. Sin embargo la mayoría de los estudiantes ni siquiera saben de estas técnicas relacionadas a las cualidades intangibles como: Innovación Liderazgo Imaginación Intelectual Distinción Extracurricular Solidez de Carácter Capacidad de Inspirar a Otros Creatividad ¿Cómo un estudiante puede saber de estas cualidades intangibles? A menos que este estudie en una secundaria de muchos recursos o vive en una comunidad que comparte este tipo de ingreso, si aprende estos valiosos factores es pura suerte.

Sexta Ronda – Exámenes de Ingreso Universitario. En esta ronda los estudiantes se colocan en un estadio nacional donde compiten con otros estudiantes en exámenes de ingreso, como SAT, ACT, Pruebas Específicas, y Exámenes Avanzados. Los padres con dinero contratan instructores privados o pagan $1000 por programas de pruebas. Por otro lado, los estudiantes de comunidades marginadas o escasos recursos son muchas veces dejados a su suerte, para que se las arreglen solos en este proceso donde la apuesta es muy alta.

Hay los que hacen lo que pueden y cruzan los dedos… otros se quedan sin saber (o se enteran demasiado tarde) sobre estos exámenes calificativos.

Looking back, I now realize that I was teetering during the Viet Nam war when human lives were nothing more than residuum tallies in a game of war: “In tonight’s news, 25 Viet Cong were killed. Only two Americans were lost!” The sacredness of life was only a theory!

But the Notre Dame nuns, during my elementary school years, had given the social gospel contained in The Beatitudes relevance for me: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Then too, it was rumored that the nun’s wimples were pinned through their scalps since they were really bald. Only the kids with exceptional courage would dare disagree with a nun! To this day, I have yet to find in Matthew 5 a Falwellian parable that states, “If more good people had concealed-carry permits...”1 As I progressed to junior high and prepared for Confirmation, morality became somewhat more complicated. I was introduced to Thomas Aquinas and his Summa Theologica. According to Aquinas, self-defense may have two effects or intentions - the saving of one’s life and the taking of another’s life: Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another’s life. Preserving the common good requires rendering the unjust aggressor unable to inflict harm.

To this end, those holding legitimate authority have the right to repel by armed force aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their charge.

I still cannot wed a Christ who admonished Peter for drawing his sword and who then replaced the severed ear of the guard with Aquinas’ Summa. Then too, I also cannot wed abortion simply for convenience or as a form of birth control with the teachings on the Mount.

Do I toss aside Aquinas and do I toss aside the belief that life is sacred, that the fetus is more than tissue, that the baby in the womb inherently possesses personhood? Do I feel that I have the right to defend human life? I watched the feminists in the continued on next page

Hasta hoy, no he podido encontrar en Mateo 5 la parábola de Falwell que dice “Si hubiese más gente buena con permisos para portar armas ocultas…”1 A medida que avanzaba a la escuela intermedia y me preparaba para la Confirmación, la moralidad se puso bastante complicada.

Me familiaricé con Tomás de Aquino y su Suma Teológica.

Según Aquino, la autodefensa puede tener dos efectos o intenciones —salvar la vida propia y tomar la vida de otro: La defensa legítima puede ser no solo un derecho sino un serio deber para alguien responsable de la vida de otro, preservar el bien común implica dejar al agresor injusto incapaz de causar daño. Para ello, aquellos con la autoridad legítima tienen el derecho de repeler por la fuerza a los que amenacen agredir a la comunidad civil que juraron proteger.

Todavía no puedo conciliar un Cristo que reprocha a Pedro por desenvainar la espada y que luego reemplaza la oreja del soldado, con la Suma de Aquino. De la misma forma, no puedo conciliar el aborto por simple conveniencia o como método anticonceptivo con las enseñanzas de el Monte. ¿Hago a un lado a Aquino y renuncio a la idea que la vida es sagrada, que el feto es más que tejidos, y que el bebé en el vientre es una persona? ¿Debe sentirme con derecho a defender la vida humana? Do I void my sacred duty to defend life and replace it with a secular duty? That seems so irreligious, cynically akin to a Jesus packing a semi-automatic under his robes! Apparently, I must base my orthopraxis either on the teachings of Christ or that of Aquinas or of Jerry Falwell, Jr. And, personally, I prefer James 2:20 and 2:21 over Paul’s Rom. 3:21 and Eph. 2:8-9. I have done so for years.

I’ve tried to draw a similarity to past episodes in US history to help disentangle my religious ideas: perhaps viability is related to Manifest Destiny - an excuse to exterminate?

Where is the Indians’ right to live, and where is the woman’s right to live? Where is the fetus’ right to live? Also, what is legitimate authority? Can Liberty University “appeal to religious authority” or is that to be considered terrorism or blasphemy in a secular or civil society? Should shooting up an abortion clinic and its occupants and then facing capital punishment classify one as a modern-day martyr?

Do pro-life activists and Islamic bombers that act in faith rather than hatred share Liberty University’s “appeal to religious authority?”

Is that the same thing?

Today, the Beatitude can be fulfilled: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled with confusion and frustration!

Note: The self-designation of the “Spanish Speaking” people of the Southwest prior to 1848 varied depen­ ding on the region and the historical time period they lived. Those living in California before 1848 called themselves “Californios” and in Texas they called themselves “Tejanos,” etc.; however, technically between 1821 and 1848 they were Mexican. After 1848, the term would be Mexican American. When a critical consciousness of their historical experience occurs, I would argue they became “Chicano.” These terms will be used in this essay.

El desplazamiento

T

he basic premise underlying this discussion is that the social, economic, and political status of Mexican Americans in the 20th century was determined by events that occurred in the Southwest between 1848 and 1900. During this period the treatment of Mexican Americans and their role in the division of labor were institutionalized. By the turn of the century, there was a clear definition of who Mexicans were and what they could do supported by stereotypes, attitudes, customs, and laws.

Further, the definition was a product of the process of displacement experienced by the Spanish speaking people of the Southwest following the Mexican American War.

DISPLACEMENT

Miranda (1985), Barrera (1979) and others have explored the notion of displacement or disposition in the context of economy and labor, but here it is expanded to include: 1. Loss of land 2. Economic disenfranchisement 3. Political disenfranchisement 4. Unequal enforcement of the law 5. Barrioization (hyper-segregation) Displacement was devastating for the Spanish speaking people of the Southwest. For elite landowners it meant dramatic downward mobility. For the common people it meant a subsistence level of survival in a hostile and conflict-laden environment. It created a leveling effect where the Spanish speaking were lumped together and viewed through a set of pernicious stereotypes no matter what their class status before 1848.

Prior to Mexican American War, Manifest Destiny emerged as a rationale for U.S expansion into Mexican territory and the ensuing armed conflict. Inher- continued on next page

Previo a la Guerra Mexico-Estadounidense, el Destino Manifiesto había emergido como justificativo de la expansión norteamericana en territorio mexicano y del resultante conflicto bélico. Inherente a esta retórica existía una declarada noción de la inferioridad de México y los mexicanos que tendrían un importante impacto en su tratamiento durante y después de la guerra.

El siguiente fragmento de una carta y luego de un discurso reflejan estas negativas actitudes: “Se me ha confidenciado que probablemente la política de nuestro gobierno no sea solo lograr una paz con México, sino aniquilar su gobierno… esto sería moralmente correcto… promovería la humanidad y la causa de la libertad y la religión.

Es verdad que causará un gran derramamiento de sangre pero mejorara ostensiblemente la condición de los mexicanos pobres… sus campos no son cultivados —sus casas y villas se están arruinando, la masa de su gente es ignorante y no tiene modales” 1 (Rogers, 1946) “México es pobre continúa a la vuelta JANUARY 2016 Joaquín 9

ent in this rhetoric were distinct notions of Mexico and Mexicans as inferior that would significantly impact their treatment during and after the war.

The following excerpts from a letter and a speech reflect these negative views: “I have heard it intimated that it may probably become policy of our government to conquer not only a peace with Mexico but to annihilate its government….this would be morally right…. promotive of humanity and the cause of freedom and religion. It is true it will lead to a great deal of bloodshed but it will greatly improve the condition of the poor Mexican….The former fields are not cultivated – their houses and villages are decaying, the people as a mass are ignorant and rude in their manners”1 (Rogers, 1846) “Mexico is poor and wretched. Why? Misgovernment – insatiable avarice— unintermitted wrong, unsparing cruelty and unbending insolence…Be it ours, now to forgive her all her trespasses, and returning good for evil, make her free and happy!....we have a duty before God which we cannot—we must not evade…our duty to fulfill the great mission of liberty committed to our hands, that I would insist, cost what it may, on the establishment of a permanent, independent republic in Mexico.”2 (Stockton3, 1847) In order to properly set the stage for a discussion of displacement, a brief review of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican American War is appropriate.

Through this treaty Mexico ceded half of its national territory including (all or part of) the current states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas4. Also, the treaty granted citizenship to all Mexicans who decided to stay on their land and not migrate across the new political border established by Mexico’s defeat. Further, it was stipulated in the treaty’s protocol that all Spanish and Mexican land grants would be honored. It is safe to say that the new Mexican Americans expected the full enjoyment of life, liberty and property under United States rule.

History shows that this would not come to pass.

The Loss of The Land

The process of land displacement and appropriation of the land by U.S. newcomers varied in the different regions depending on a number of factors: demographics, number of Euro American migrants versus Mexican Americans, etc. In New Mexico the process

was more bureaucratic and involved the manipulation of territorial government and financial institutions, primarily due to the fact that Mexican Americans remained the majority population well into the 20th century. As a result, there was less armed confrontation, as the numbers tended to dissuade the willingness to engage in it. In contrast, in Northern California, almost overnight, Euro Americans became the majority because of the gold rush of 1849. Euro American squatters overran the land owned by Mexican Americans, and this resulted in more armed confrontations between them. Although tactics and pace varied in California, New Mexico and Texas, etc., the result was the same – loss of the land Eddie Ramírez

La Pérdida de las Tierras

El proceso de desalojo y apropiación de la tierra por lo estadounidenses recién-llegados varía en las diferentes regiones dependiendo de un número de factores: demografía, número de euroamericanos versus mexicanos, etc. En Nuevo México el proceso fue más burocrático e implicaba la manipulación por el gobierno territorial y las instituciones financieras, principalmente porque los mexicanos-estadounidenses fueron la mayoría hasta entrado el Siglo XX; en consecuencia, hubo menos conflictos armados, dado que los números tienden a desanimar la voluntad de causarlos.

Por el contrario, en el norte de California —a causa de la fiebre del oro de 1849— de la noche a la mañana los euroamericanos pasaron a ser la mayoría. Inmigrantes estadounidenses se instalaron sin miramientos en terrenos de propiedad de mexicoamericanos y esto conllevó a más conflictos armados entre ambos.

Go Taylor! Go Irish!

C

ongratulations to Taylor third grade teacher Allison Silva and her class for having been chosen as the focus of a Notre Dame University documentary on moving students into the college world! The film crews were here this week to capture a day in the life of Silva’s class, where instruction was intense, learning evident everywhere and the room filled with the green, blues and golds of the students’ adopted university.

Silva’s class chose Notre Dame as part of the school-wide AVID program, in which students from families who did not attend college are put on a university-bound path. They studied the school, wrote about it, face booked and even tweeted.

Silva’s tweets were noticed by Notre Dame and the university responded, sending out a film crew as part of the college’s new First Fans outreach program and inviting her back to next week’s football game. Said Silva: “It was in many ways a surreal experience with the cameras and a boom mike in the room while teaching, and at the same time it was a great experience for the students to feel like what they are learning is meaningful and important.”

The students agreed: “This makes us feel like we really are Notre Dame,” wrote students Nyah, Mariela, Jordin, Jayden and Alazarria in a letter to Silva instructing her to be sure to see Golden Dome when she is at Notre Dame because they studied it and it is special. Great work by Allison Silva and her third grade class!

En Notre Dame notaron los “tweets” de Silva y respondieron y —como parte del programa New Fans (Nuevos Admiradores)— enviaron una cuadrilla de videograbación y la invitaron al juego de futbol americano de la semana siguiente.

SUSD Writes the Code T

housands of elementary students in Stockton Unified Schools participated in this year’s Hour of Code, creating Star Wars’ characters and putting them into action on the screen or developing their own programs with the popular computer language JavaScript. This is not your old computer science class.

Students as young as first grade are doing technology coding. By the time they get into Deanna Kobayashi’s fifth or Edward Fernandez’s sixth grade classes at Hamilton they can not only build a digital Star Wars’ robot R2-D2, but move him around on the screen, all with technology code. The Hamilton students are moving fast – with the help of Weber Institute students who go out to Hamilton to work with the students every week. “This is such a great program,” said Weber Institute teacher Joel Blomenkamp, who coordinates the computer tutoring. “Our students can share a really critical skill that they excel in with these students and they are happy to do it.”

Hour of Code is part of a national global initiative aimed at inspiring young people to consider computer careers. Computer skills lead to high pay jobs and, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, there is currently a national shortage of technology/computer specialists.

SUSD has significantly expanding computer training to include its youngest students and moved the high school programs into areas of increasingly advanced work, including robotics and medical technology.

Lenguaje programático en SUSD

iles de estudiantes de primarias de Stockton Unificado participaron en la Hora del Código de este año, creando personajes de la Guerra de las Galaxias para ponerlos en acción en sus pantallas, o desarrollando sus propios programas con el popular lenguaje computacional JavaScript. Esta no es una clase de informática común y corriente.

Estudiantes de hasta primer grado están creando códigos tecnológicos. Para cuando llegan al quinto grado de la Sra. Deanna Kobayashi o al sexto de Edward Fernández en la Primaria Hamilton, no solo pueden

re-crear el famoso robot de la Guerra de las Galaxias “R2-D2” en sus pantallas, sino también darle movimiento… todo por intermedio de código tecnológico. Los estudiantes de Hamilton avanzan rápido —con la ayuda de estudiantes del Instituto Weber quienes se trasladan semanalmente a esa primaria para trabajar con los chicos. “Es un programa súper bueno,” dice el maestro del Instituto Weber, Joel Blomenkamp, quien coordina las ayudantías informáticas, “nuestros estudiantes pueden compartir este importante talento que dominan muy bien… y lo hacen con gusto”.

La Hora del Código es parte de una iniciativa a nivel nacional que busca motivar a los jóvenes a considerar carreras en informática. El dominio de la computación conlleva a empleos bien remunerados y, según estadísticas del Departamento del Trabajo, hoy en día hay una escasez de especialistas tecnológicos y de informática.

El SUSD ha ampliado considerablemente su capacitación en computación para incorporar a los estudiantes más jovencitos como también profundizar los programas secundarios con trabajo más sofisticado, incluyendo robótica y tecnología médica.

Whispers to the Sky Ed Casillas, Stockton, CA

I

n the 1950’s east of Stockton, lay a field of yellow mustard flowers where the earth once whispered to the sky. A young man poor in money, but rich in heart, professed his love for a young woman. Like one standing before a wishing well, he tossed his hopes and dreams into the field and with his broken Tejano English, stated, “This will be our land, nuestra tierra, one day.” She blushed at the idea and marveled at his quiet confidence. My mother, Maria Dominguez, and my father, Rogelio, were married a short while later. I am the fifth of their seven children.

In the late 1960’s, my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The “beast” waged war upon his very existence, his future, and family. Contemplating his pending death, my mother and father drove to the field they had visited many times before, only this time they saw a small cardboard sign with the words “For Sale”, along with a telephone number on it. He had always dreamt of one day owning land, a home, where he could watch his children grow.

Without hesitation my father said, “Let’s call”. The call led to a visit with Mrs. Smith, a $100.00 deposit, and the subsequent purchase of the land. Having been given just months to live, many people thought he was chasing an impossible dream.

As a small child, I vividly recall riding out to this field in the back seat of my parent’s rusted, blue and white 1954 Ford F150, all they could afford at the time. For years we visited and stared at this empty field of mustard flowers. One day in the 1970’s, my father, already weak and sickly, paced out an imaginary walkway to an imaginary door. He opened it and walked in, exclaiming, “This is our living room! That is our kitchen! That is your bedroom!” I was confused. “Out there,” he signaled, “there will be chickens, pigs, and chivos (goats)”.

Instantly, walls of doubt and fear fell away.

With every word, he gave us permission to believe, to dream, to envision, and more importantly to transcend. A future became possible. Education became possible. Happiness became possible. Everything was possible!

A fines de los 1960s, a mi padre le diagour home was built. It was beautiful and every bit as my father had envisioned. In that home, on that land, there would be much love, laughter, tears, but also sadness. There was family - crying babies, birthdays, Christmases - farm animals and always an abundance of food.

The constants were prayers from my mother and my father, who by the Grace of God, lived to see not only his children grow, but his grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well. For over forty years what was once a field of mustard flowers became a field of joyous memories and experiences.

years ago, after almost 50 years, my father, now seventy-nine years old, became very ill and taken to the hospital; the “beast” had returned, invading my father’s lungs.

It was painful to watch a seemingly indestructible man not fight back, but my father had nothing more to prove. Now, his only dream was to return home, to be with his family and his love of nearly sixty years, Maria. Home again, one morning in May, he took his last breath as he looked over “our land, nuestra tierra” where the earth, once more... whispered to the sky.

se derrumbaron. Con cada palabra, nos daba permiso para creer, soñar, visualizar y, más importante aún, trascender. Un futuro era posible. La educación era posible. La felicidad era posible ¡Todo era posible!

Con la ayuda de los hermanos y sobrinos de mi madre, contratistas en construcción, se levantó nuestra casa. Era hermosa y exactamente como la imaginó mi padre. En esa casa, en ese terreno, habría mucho amor, risas, y también lágrimas y tristezas. Hubo familia —llanto de bebés, cumpleaños, navidades— animales de granja y siempre mucha comida. Lo constante eran las oraciones por mi madre y mi padre quien, por gracia del Señor, no Ed Casillas solo vivió para ver a sus Stockton, CA hijos crecer, sino también a sus nietos y bisnietos.

Por más de cuarenta año, lo que fue un campo de flores mostaza se convirtió en un campo de recuerdos y experiencias gozosas.

Hace como dos años y después de casi 50 años mi padre, ya de setenta y nueve años, se puso muy mal y le llevaron al hospital: la “bestia” había regresado, invadiendo los pulmones de mi padre.

Fue muy doloroso ver que ese casi indestructible hombre no se defendiera, pero él ya no tenía nada que probar. Ahora, su único sueño era regresar a casa, estar con su familia y su amor de casi sesenta años, María. De vuelta a casa, una mañana de mayo, dio su último aliento mirando nuestra tierra, donde el suelo, una vez más… se cuchicheaba con el cielo.

he contestacián (the “reply”) is an interesting form in many Mexican songs, whether the popular rancheras or corridos (ballads). In these, one singer addresses a topic or directs comments to an individual or group, and a second singer replies to the first one in another song.

It’s unknown if this is the case with this ballad. In the previous issue of Joaquin, I discussed the ballad, The Deported, which condemns Mexicans for having left their homeland for the allure of El Norte.

In this song, the singer is one of those poor Mexicans who has been deported to Mexico from the U.S., knowing he must face the ire and shame of his fellow countrymen upon returning.

He tactfully begins his defense by (almost) admitting to his guilt: What they say about us is nearly all the truth.

But we left our country out of sheer necessity.

I myself could have told you that many return [to Mexico] boasting and that is why the local press speaks so harshly about them.

But he is quick to lay the blame on the “unkind employers” in Mexico: But those who are to blame are the unkind employers who don’t give their workers enough to buy a jacket.

He is careful not to “criticize” his country or appear unpatriotic; yet, he openly condemns Mexico’s cruel treatment of its poor: I am not criticizing the country but I can certainly tell you that many of the laborers are naked to their navels.

The rich go in automobiles or riding a horse with a good saddle while the poor peones go about half naked.

The peon is always burdened and treated with cruelty; the Rich would like to see his head where they see his feet.

They treat him like a slave not a useful servant who pours out for the rich his last drop of sweat. continued on next page

a contestación es un interesante estilo en muchas canciones mexicanas, sean rancheras o corridos.

En estos, un cantante se refiere a un tema y dirige sus versos a un individuo o grupo, y un segundo cantante replica al primero a través de otra canción.

No se sabe si es el caso en esta balada.

En el pasado número de Joaquín tratamos la balada Los Deportados que condenan a los mexicanos por dejar su patria por la promesa de El Norte.

En esta canción, el cantante es uno de esos pobres mexicanos que ha sido deportado desde EEUU a México, sabiendo que al volver deberá enfrentarse la ira y escarnio de sus compatriotas.

Con mucho tacto comienza su defensa (casi) admitiendo su culpa: Lo que dicen de nosotros es casi la purita verdad Pero dejamos nuestra patria Por pura necesidad Les podría haber dicho yo mismo que muchos regresan (a México) presumiendo y que la prensa local hable tan mal de ellos yo lo entiendo Pero se apresura en culpar a los “malos patrones” en México: Pero el que tiene la culpa en este verso Es el mal patrón y no la guitarra El que no le da al trabajador Ni para siquiera para una chamarra Tiene cuidado de no “criticar” a su país o parecer poco patriota;

To appear fair, the singer admits to the harsh reality of life in El Norte, but points out one critical contradiction between the two countries’ pay: I don’t say that in the North one is going to be well off; nor because one wears a suit will he be elected to congress.

One has to work there hard, in the American way, but [there] one succeeds in earning more than any of my countrymen here.

Here, [in Mexico] one works for a year without earning enough for a shirt; the poor man suffers always and the rich man just laughs.

Paid forty or fifty cents.

Never more than that.

He can’t get enough to eat; his stomach is always empty.

At this point, the singer lays out his closing arguments by posing a question to the jury and addressing the touchy question of patriotism: Let my countrymen say if I am telling a lie.

For it is needless to ask about what one can plainly see.

Many people have said we are unpatriotic because we go to serve the accursed “Patotas”* [*derogatory term for “big footed” Americans]

The accused ends with a passionate plea to Mexico calling for a just treatment of its

workers, one necessary to stem the tide of immigrants leaving for the North: But let them give us jobs and pay us decent wages and not one Mexican then will go to foreign lands.

We’re anxious to return to our adored country; but what can we do about it If the country is in ruins?

The jury is still out. Yet, I find that the issues that these two ballads confront continue to face many Mexicans today. Little has changed a century later. I try to imagine the ballads being put to music and sung with a guitar. Perhaps one day, I’ll put them to music and Richard Ríos sing them for you, as they Stockton, CA should be.

Aun no hay un veredicto. No obstante no veo que los problemas citados en estas dos baladas continúan siendo el reto de muchos mexicanos hoy en día. No ha cambiado mucho un siglo más tarde. Trataré de imaginar la música que acompañaba estas baladas. Tal vez se las ponga yo mismo y se las cante, como corresponde.

Caballero Knight Without Armor Sin Armadura

sta pregunta se ha hecho muchas veces: ¿Cuándo algo es historia, y cuando comienza? Pero encuentro más importante preguntar ¿Quién es el que la escribe y cuánta investigación se está dispuesto a hacer? Mi punto es la biografía del historiador y bibliotecario Dr. Carlos E. Castañeda.

Mientras investigaba sobre chicanos en la Primera Guerra Mundial, leí una bibliografía y me encontré con el título Caballero Sin Armadura e inmediatamente me dije ¿Qué tiene que ver la Conquista con esto?

Carlos E. Castañeda fue, lejos, un precursor y contemporáneo del Movimiento Chicano de los 1960s —y su nombre debe ser conocido y respetado por todos. Nació en Camargo, Tamaulipas, en 1896 y cruzó la frontera intangible justo antes de la Revolución Mexicana (1810-20). Castañeda pasó su juventud en Brownsville, Texas, fue el mejor estudiante de su promoción, y el único mexicano graduado de una secundaria que obtenía, además, una beca a la Universidad de Texas.

Inicialmente, Castañeda estaba estudiando ingeniería, pero un empleo de tiempo parcial como asistente de instrucción de un notable historiador alteró su carrera y sus planes educacionales. La historia de España en México y el Nuevo Mundo fueron su nueva dirección.

Termino obteniendo una maestría y un doctorado en historia.

Como estudiante —y más tarde como profesor— Castañeda experimentó muchos casos de discriminación. Habiendo cruzado la frontera años antes era, como decirlo… indocumentado. Como mexicano no estaba obligado a enlistarse en las fuerzas armadas para combatir en la 1ª Guerra Mundial, no obstante, a sabiendas que un servicio militar honorable le ayudaría en naturalizarse, se enlistó y sirvió.

Totalmente bilingüe y bi-cultural, Castañeda se sentía a sus anchas con gente importante en ambos lados de la frontera y a todo nivel social.

Como miembro de la Iglesia Católica y Caballero de Colón, Castañeda desarrolló un gran interés por la historia de la Iglesia en el decontinúa a la vuelta sarrollo del Sudoeste.

he question is often asked: What is history and when does history begin? But I find what it more important to ask, Who is writing the history and how much research are they willing to do? Point in mind is the biography of historian/librarian, Dr. Carlos E. Castaneda.

While doing research on Chicanos and World War I, I was reading a bibliography and ran across the title Knight Without Armor and immediately said to myself, “What the Conquest has to do with it?”

Carlos E. Castaneda is very much a contemporary and precursor to the Chicano Movement of the 1960s – and should be a name recognized and respected by all. He was born in Camargo, Tamaulipas, in 1896 and crossed the intangible border shortly before the Mexican Revolution (1910-20). Castaneda spent his youth in Brownsville, Texas, was Valedictorian of his class and the only Mexican to graduate from the local high school while winning a scholarship to the University of Texas.

Initially Castaneda was studying Engineering, but a part time teaching assistant’s job with a noted historian altered his career and educational plans. The history of Spain in the New World and Mexico was his new direction. He went on to earn a Master and a Doctorate degree in History.

As a student, and later as a professor, Castaneda experienced many incidents of discrimination. Having crossed the border years earlier he was, we could say —undocumented. As a Mexican national he was not legally obligated to enlist in the military for combat in WWI. Nonetheless, cognizant that a record of honorable military service would be helpful in applying for naturalized citizenship, he enlisted and served.

Being fluent bilingually and biculturally, Castaneda felt comfortable with influential people on both sides of the border and with all levels of society.

As a member of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Castaneda developed a keen interest in the history of the Church in the development of the Southwest. Already recognized as a history scholar, Castaneda was asked to write the history of this interconnection. Traveling to Mexico and digging through piles of archives tucked away in moist and Richard Soto dusty crevices, he soon became an expert in the history and language of Biblioteca the time. In addition to Mexico, Castaneda visited other Latin American San Joaquin countries and copied or purchased rare documents for the University of Murrieta Library Austin in Texas.

His second career was being Superintendent of a Texas school district, where he saw, firsthand, the effects of social and linguistic discrimination. Castaneda was not only appalled by what he saw but he was quick to rectify the ill.

In addition to teaching and mentoring young scholars, Castaneda spent endless hours researching and writing. He enjoyed tracing history starting with a scrap of paper, or a picture, or a hand written note and eventually describing a full event. This painstaking skill was to help him to his third career.

Dr. Castaneda’s third job was that of administrator in the Fair Employment Practice Commission during WW2. To my knowledge, Castaneda was the only Hispanic to serve in this capacity. While he was on leave from University service to serve the government during the war, Castaneda uncovered many acts of discrimination against individuals but —what upset continued on next page him the most— was the forms of institutional discrimination that JANUARY 2016 Joaquín 21

kept Mexicans from moving up the ladder regardless of tenure or skill.

This pattern had the effect of keeping generations of Mexicans at the lowest level of pay and skill, and segregated to the “Mexican side” of town. Because of this discrimination their children were unable to dream of ever going to college —let alone graduate from high school, as their wages were needed to help support the family.

Dr. Castaneda was accustomed to multitasking and carried a heavy load at school, the community and home. He was always on the edge of meeting deadlines, traveling around the Southwest and Latin America and working in dingy, moist, dusty archives. He ultimately worked himself to death at the young age of 62. Carlos E. Castaneda, PhD, was a true hero.

While researching this article I looked at noted historians Dr. Rudy Acuna and Dr. Armando Navarro and found no mention of Dr. Castaneda in their multipage works. Ya reconocido como historiador de nota, se le pidió a Castañeda escribir la historia de esta conexión. Viajando a México y buscando entre pilas de archivos en ranuras húmedas o polvorientas, pronto se convirtió en un experto en la historia y el lenguaje de aquellos tiempos. Además de México, Castañeda visitó otros países latinoamericanos y copió o adquirió documentos únicos para la Universidad de Texas en Austin.

Su segunda carrera fue como superintendente de un distrito escolar tejano donde vio, de primera mano, los efectos de la discriminación social y lingüística. Castañeda no solo se afligió por lo que vio, sino que fue rápido en remediarlo.

Además de enseñar y servir de ejemplo a jóvenes intelectuales, Castañeda se pasó innumerables horas investigando y escribiendo. Le gustaba seguirle la pista a la historia empezando por un trozo de papel, una foto, o una nota manuscrita para, eventualmente, describir todo un evento. Este laborioso talento le sirvió para su tercera carrera.

El tercer trabajo del Dr. Castañeda fue de administrador de la Comisión de Igualdad en el Empleo durante la 2ª Guerra Mundial. A mi saber, Castañeda ha sido el único hispano en servir en ese puesto. Durante este sabático de facultativo de la universidad —sirviendo al gobierno durante la guerra— Castañeda descubrió muchos actos de discriminación contra personas pero —lo que más lo indignó— fue el sistema de discriminación institucional que impedía que el mexicano, irrelevante de su antigüedad o habilidad, pudiese avanzar en su empleo. Este patrón tenía el efecto de mantener a generaciones de mexicanos en el nivel más bajo de ingreso y habilidades, y lo segregaba al “barrio mexicano” de su ciudad. Como resultado de esta discriminación, sus hijos no podrían nunca soñar con llegar a la universidad… ni siquiera de terminar la secundaria —sus ingresos se necesitaban para ayudar a mantener la familia.

El Dr. Castañeda estaba acostumbrado a realizar muchas tareas a la vez y trabajaba mucho en la escuela, la comunidad y en casa. Estaba siempre presionado por cumplir plazos, viajando por el Sudoeste y Latinoamérica, y trabajando en archivos sucios, húmedos y polvorientos.

Finalmente, a la edad de solo 62 años, este tren de trabajo lo llevó a la muerte. Carlos E, Castañeda, Ph.D. fue un verdadero héroe.

Mientras investigaba para este artículo note que destacados historiadores como el Dr. Rudy Acuña y el Dr. Armando Navarro, en sus gruesas obras, nunca mencionan al Dr. Castañeda. Al mirar a escritores más antiguos y experimentados como el Dr. Mario T. García y el Dr. Juan Gómez Quiñones, veo numerosas citas al Dr. Castañeda.

Fighting a Recreational Demise

I

did not delve into the use of recreational drugs —i.e. marihuana— in my recently-published book Boxing Heroes, Fighters, Amazons and Fools because smoking weed is ‘so casual’ —it no longer receives more than a raised eyebrow.

In my research of Stockton I come across many ex-athletes filled with regret over their choices. While I respect all athletic accomplishments, I have a bias for fighters. Fighting is a tough sport and you would expect more discipline from someone who has climbed so high. Sadly, this is not the case. I just don’t understand it. Perhaps, attempts to legalize marihuana have caused less concern for its consumption; even the police won’t respond to calls of adolescents smoking weed while playing soccer! They will, however, eagerly respond and even send ambulances when their intoxicated behavior turns into a brawl.

Few seem to connect casual use of marihuana to other drugs. After cycle legend Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal made world news, I felt betrayed, but I was more baffled by some of my friends’ reaction of toward his cheating: “He only wanted to win.” I still have trouble accepting that; of course, everyone wants to win! But not all of them will cheat to succeed —the humiliation of exposure is enough to deter most.

W hich makes the suspension of Nick Diaz —our fallen mixed martial arts’ national hero— so disappointing. I was not surprised by his other bumps with the law, and Jorge Martínez I might even be willing “to understand” why he Stockton, CA was taking performanceenhancing drugs. But, why would Nick —whose career had gone so far— throw it all away by getting stoned? How deep must his need to escape reality be, that he would risk his entire career?

It is a fact that marihuana consumption reduces the necessary oxygen intake for a peak performance. Yet, a study revealed 60% of athletes did not believe this drug would harm their performance. Only 3% believed it might, but didn’t know how. I do not know nor care whether it hurt them or not, but why risk

n mi reciente libro Boxing Heroes, Fighters, Amazons and Fools (Héroes, Luchadores, Amazonas y Tontos del Box) no elaboré sobre el consumo de drogas ‘por entretención’(por ej.: marihuana) porque su uso es ‘tan casual’ que ya nadie se escandaliza por tan poco.

En mi investigación por Stockton me encontré con muchos ex-atletas llenos de remordimiento por sus decisiones. Aunque respeto todos los logros atléticos, tengo una tendencia hacia los boxeadores. No obstante, vendrán sin demora —e incluso llamarán ambulancias— cuando su conducta intoxicada se transforma en riñas.

Pocos son los que conectan el consumo casual de marihuana a otras drogas. Después que el escándalo de dopaje de la leyenda del ciclismo Lance Armstrong recorriera los titulares de la prensa mundial, me sentí muy decepcionado. Pero estaba más asombrado por la reacción de algunos de mis amigos respecto de su engaño: “Solo quería ganar,” dicen.

Todavía tengo problema para aceptar eso; por supuesto ¡todos quieren ganar!

Pero no todos harán trampa para lograrlo… la humillación de salir pillados es suficiente para intimidar a la mayoría.

Lo que hace la suspensión de nuestro destronado héroe nacional en artes marciales, Nick Díaz, más decepcionante aún. No me sorprendieron sus otros encontrones con la ley, y puede que hasta “entienda” porqué tomaba drogas para elevar su rendimiento. Pero ¿Por qué Nick —cuya carrera había avanzado tanto— tiró todo por la borda por andar por ahí drogado? ¿Tanta era su desesperación por escapar su realidad que arriesgó todo su futuro?

Es un hecho que el consumo de la marihuana reduce la toma del oxígeno necesario para un rendimiento óptimo. Sin embargo, un estudio revela que el 60% de los atletas no cree que esta droga afecte su rendimiento. Solo el 3% creía que quizá, pero no cómo. Yo no sé ni me importa si les afecta o no, pero, ¿para qué arriesgar el ser sorprendidos drogados cuando eso los excluirá, automáticamente, de competir?

Aunque puede que algunas cosas cambien en el futuro cercano o lejano, la suspensión de cinco años de Nick puede, perfectamente, ser el fin de su carrera. Los años de inactividad pueden afectar seriamente su retorno profesional.

Las drogas, por entretención o no, son drogas. Esto no me parece entretenido a mí. Me parece una gran pérdida para nuestro deporte local y nuestra imagen nacional. Es más, me parece ridículamente estúpido.

I

t was early in downtown El Paso and the morning rush in progress. The sidewalks crowded with people from Juarez coming off the Santa Fe International Bridge, were on their way to work. There were housekeepers, gardeners, carpenters, cement finishers and masons, all on their way to the suburbs or “La Mesita,” where the wealthy lived.

Roman waited for the light to change admiring the ornate architecture of Kress’ Department Store. Glancing down to the curb a crumpled twenty dollar bill fluttered.

“Oh boy! This must be my lucky day!” He thought swiftly picking up the bill. Walking across the street he thought of how to spend it.

He could go to the Coney Island Cafe across from the park. Don Juan Angel cooked the best cheeseburgers and fries and made delicious, thick, milk shakes. From there he’d go to school at Franklin Elementary. He could hardly wait to play tag or dodge ball with Soledad. Roman thought the world of her with her perky little nose, pony tails, and the bangs over her pretty brown eyes. She would always chase him but he didn’t mind. He’d outrun her through swings, sand boxes, and across basketball courts before he’d finally give in.

Turning the corner, he could see his classmates lining up. Roman ran the last half block reaching the end of the line in time for Mrs. O’Brien’s usual look of indifference. Soledad lined up behind him.

“Hi Roman,” she said. “I’m sorry about yesterday. I didn’t mean to hit you so hard,” she said tugging on his shirt to keep his attention.

Roman couldn’t help smiling. “Shhhh...! Mrs. O’Brien is giving instructions!” he warned.

The students filed into the classroom and everyone dashed for their seats. No sooner did they take their seats when Roman felt Soledad’s hand on his neck.

“Stop it!” Roman hissed. The class was often entertained by the drama between the two “little love birds”, as they were called. As lunch time neared Soledad whispered: “ R o m a n… R o m a n… t u r n around!” She poked his neck with her pencil eraser, bugging him. Turning abruptly, not realizing Soledad’s head was so close, he

Román esperó a que cambiara la luz, admirando la adornada arquitectura de la tienda de departamentos Kress. Mirando a la cuneta vio llegar revoloteando un arrugado billete de 20 dólares. “¡Órale! ¡Este es mi día de suerte!” pensó recogiendo el billete como relámpago. Al atravesar la calle pensaba en qué lo gastaría.

Al doblar la esquina pudo ver a sus compañeros haciendo fila. Román corrió la última media cuadra llegando justo para encontrarse con la típica mirada de indiferencia de Misis O’Brien. Soledad se le formó detrás.

“Hola Román,” dijo. “Perdona por lo de ayer. No quise pegarte tan fuerte”, le dijo mientras le ajustaba la camisa para mantener su atención. Román no pude evitar sonreír.

“Shhht…” ¡Misis O’Brien está dando instrucciones!” le advirtió. Los estudiantes enfilaron al salón y se lanzaron a ocupar sus asientos.

No se había terminado de sentar cuando sintió la mano de Soledad en su cuello. “¡Déjame en paz!” Román gruñó entre dientes. Sus compañeros muchas veces se divertían con el drama entre “los dos tórtolos”, como les llamaban. Cuando llegaba la hora del almuerzo, Soledad le susurró: “¡Román, Román, date vuelta!” punzándole el cuello con el borrador de su lápiz. Se volvió bruscamente, sin darse cuenta que Soledad estaba casi encima de él, y su codo le dio en la cabeza. La niña y su silla se fueron al suelo con un estruendo solo sobrepasado por el grito de Soledad. Román se paró de un salto, pero quedó estupefacto viendo las piernas de la niña moviéndose en el aire. Peor aún ¡se le veían los chones! Sin poder levantarla ni a ella ni el escritorio, retrocedió avergonzado. La clase se llenó de cuchicheos mientras la Sra. O’Brien ayudaba a Soledad y le enderezaba su escritorio. “¡Estás en un gran problema, jovencito! ¡No puedes andar pegándole a las niñas!” le dijo mientras garabateaba en un libreto y le fijaba la nota escrita en su camisa.

He said not realizing what he had said.

Both mothers looked at each other in awe.

“Is that true Soledad?” Asked her mother.

“Yes mama, I love him too!” She said tilting her head to see from beneath the bandage.

Embarrassed and blushing, the mother abruptly grabbed Soledad, and left.

That summer Roman’s family moved to Phoenix. It was sad for him, because he didn’t want to move. On the way out of town, the Greyhound passed Soledad’s house. Roman hoped she would be outside playing to at least wave goodbye. She was not. That night, Roman slept against the cold bus window on its way to Las Cruces, as warm tears trickled down his cheeks.

“Regardless. This little girl ended up on the floor. Go home and take this note to your parents. Is that understood?”

Walking home Roman heard the lunch bell ring. Halfway through the alley, near a fire station, he heard Soledad’s screaming “Roman! Roman!”

He looked back and ran a few strides.

Meaning only to scare her, he picked up a rock he threw it backwards, though aiming away from her. But the rock somehow ricocheted off a telephone pole and struck her on the nose!

Devastated and shocked by the sight of the bright red blood streaming from Soledad’s nose, he began to run.

For the second time her haunting scream echoed in his ears.

Nearby, firemen heard her screams and came running. Roman thought of staying but kept on running. On arriving, his mother questioned why he was home so early. “Oh we had an assembly that finished early so they let us go,” he lied.

Shortly after, there was a forceful knock at the door. Roman tried to listen as he sought to hide under his bed. A woman was ranting in Spanish. “Look what you little devil did to my child!” she was screaming. Soledad tilted her head to see through her bandage, looking for Roman.

“Roman! Roman! Ven aqui!” his mother demanded.

Roman thought that if he could crawl further under the bed everything would go away.

Shutting his eyes tighter he waited. And sure enough, it didn’t work.

“Roman! Come to the front door right now!!!!” His mother hollered.

He walked to the front door, slowly, tears streaming down his cheeks. Soledad stood there with a immense bandage on her nose.

“Roman! Did you do this?” asked his mother.

The kid squirmed as he thought of how or where to begin.

“Well,” he finally spurted out, putting his head down, “Soledad is my friend, but today when we were playing around uh…” he sobbed, “I turned and accidentally tipped her desk over. I didn’t mean to! Honest it was an accident!” added quickly. “Then, walking

Mientras caminaba a casa Román escuchó sonar el timbre del almuerzo. A mitad del callejón, cerca de la estación de bomberos, escuchó a Soledad gritándole “¡Román, Román!”

Siempre mirando atrás corrió varios metros para alejarse. Con la intención de solo asustarla recogió una piedra la tiró hacia atrás, apuntando para no pegarle. Pero la piedra rebotó de tal forma en un poste telefónico ¡que le dio de lleno en la nariz! Desolado y aterrado de ver la sangre brotando de la nariz de Soledad, comenzó a correr.

Por segunda vez los chillidos de Soledad retumbaron en sus oídos. Los bomberos escucharon sus gritos y corrieron a ayudarla. Román pensó en quedarse pero siguió corriendo.

Al llegar a casa su mama le preguntó porque estaba de vuelta tan temprano. “Oh, tuvimos

asamblea y la terminaron temprano y nos dejaron irnos,” mintió.

Poco después se escucharon fuertes golpes en la puerta. Román trató de escuchar mientras buscaba esconderse bajo su cama. Una mujer gritoneaba en español. “¡Mire lo que su escuincle le hizo a mi chiquita!” gritaba.

Soledad torcía cabeza para mirar pasado sus vendajes, buscando a Román. “¡Román, Román, ven aquí!” ordenó su madre.

Román pensó que si se adentraba más bajo la cama todo se iba a pasar. Cerró los ojos con fuerza, esperó. Pero no. No funcionó “¡Román! ¡¡¡Te me vienes ya!!!

Muy lentamente, con las lágrimas corriéndole por las mejillas, Román se acercó a la puerta. Soledad estaba allí, con una inmensa venda sobre la nariz. “¡Román! ¿Tú hiciste esto?” preguntó su madre.

El chico hacía muecas viendo cómo empezaba o por dónde.

“Ahhhh,” finalmente balbuceó, bajando la cabeza, “Soledad es mi amiga, pero hoy cuando estábamos jugando, aahh…” sollozaba, “me di vuelta y sin querer le di vuelta su escritorio ¡No fue a propósito! ¡De veras! ¡Fue un accidente!” agregó sin respirar. “Después, cuando caminaba a casa, yo no quería… ¡tiré la piedra lejos de ella! Nunca le haría nada ¡Yo la quiero!” exclamó sin darse cuenta de lo que había dicho.

Ambas madres se miraron, una a la otra, asombradas. “¿Es verdad eso, Soledad?” preguntó su madre. “Sí, mama ¡Yo también lo quiero!” dijo ella torciendo la cabeza detrás de las vendas.

Avergonzada y con la cara roja, la madre tomó a su niña de un jalón y se marchó.

Ese verano la familia de Román se mudó a Phoenix. Fue triste para él, porque no quería irse. En el viaje saliendo de la ciudad, el Greyhound pasó por la casa de Soledad. Esperaba verla jugando afuera para por lo menos decirle adiós con la mano. No estaba. Esa noche, ya camino a Las Cruces, se durmió contra el helado vidrio de la ventana del autobús. Tibias lágrimas le corrieron por las mejillas.

Por la mayor parte de los últimos 80 años Stockton ha sido utilizado más para importar que para exportar alimentos u otra cosa3. No obstante, el enfocarse en la identidad de la región por su conexión puerto-alimentos debiese elevar nuestra nueva imagen a un nivel más superior. Tiene el potencial de fomentar el emprendimiento necesario que impulse actividades derivadas de la abundancia de alimentos y del singular eje de transporte que ofrece la ciudad. Promover una nueva imagen solo para atraer visitantes es simplemente tímida y un malgasto de potencial.

Desde ya, recientes inversiones en infraestructura en el Puerto de Stockton han causado un impresionante crecimiento en este, evidente en volúmenes récord de exportación. Hoy por hoy, el puerto podría convertirse más que nunca en el motor de nuestra economía.

En contraste, West Louisville, Kentucky, transformó su letárgico terminal en el Rio Ohio en lo que se le ha denominado “el mayor centro alimenticio de la nación”, incrementando la inversión en bodegas, procesamiento de alimentos, y respaldo a nuevas iniciativas de producción en sus instalaciones portuarioribereñas para capitalizar en la conexión con las circundantes regiones productoras de alimentos. El hasta ahora modesto puerto pasó a ser, de hecho, un importante eje económico y la nueva identidad para la región.

La experiencia de Louisville debiese ser un motivador precedente para Stockton.

Nuestra ciudad posee ventajas más grandes que esa ciudad, y el puerto cuenta también con un liderazgo progresista. Tal vez si logramos re-establecer bien este asunto de la imagen podamos restaurar la frescura a nuestra flor —si me permiten tanta metáfora— porque saber cómo llamarla nos permitirá respaldarla y ayudarla a crecer mejor de lo que lo hemos estado haciendo hasta ahora.

Octava Ronda – Anticipación y Preparación Estratégica de la “Lista Corta”. En esta etapa los estudiantes deben saber cómo reducir su selección de universidades de modo de ampliar sus posibilidades de aceptación.

Han aprendido la ventaja que da emparejar su perfil académico con un grupo de universidades predeterminados. En esta ronda, el juego acaba para aquel que no elige las universidades apropiadas donde postular.

Novena Ronda – Componiendo Biografía y Entrevista. Para los pocos que quedan todavía en la mesa, hay todavía una última estrategia de juego antes de presionar “submit”. Esto implica redacción persuasiva, como exhibir fortalezas, los detalles que las universidades de elite buscan en un texto bien escrito —y cómo hacer todo eso en 650 palabras o menos. Los adinerados contratan asesores, o se apoyan en un plan de estudios que incluya Inglés Avanzado donde aprendan cómo expresarse en sus declaraciones personales. Los estudiantes que asisten a secundarias limitadas no cuentan con esos lujos. Incluso con la ayuda de un maestro de Literatura, para que una composición impresione a una universidad selectiva se requiere de algo más que buena gramática o un texto bien estructurado.

La asesoría es clave, pero tiene precio.

Finalmente, los estudiantes pueden pasar por una serie de entrevistas. Estudiantes bien asesorados saben cómo vestir, qué decir, y cómo prepararse para las entrevistas. Algunas escuelas de paga realizan ensayos de entrevista, u ofrecen asesorías o voluntarios-modelos.

No obstante, los estudiantes de secundarias de escasos medios generalmente se ubican en comunidades donde pocos, si alguno, ha sido entrevistado por una universidad de prestigio.

Recuerden, estoy hablando exclusivamente de admisión a universidades selectivas. No crean que lo que digo es que nuestros estudiantes están ya condenados, o que no hay esperanzas. Yo paso el 100% de mis horas de trabajo guiando estudiantes en la senda del proceso de admisión selectiva porque estoy convencida que se puede ganar en este juego.

Mi punto es que, para poder ampliar nuestra presencia dentro de estas instituciones, no podemos dejarlo a la fe, la casualidad o a la suerte. Debemos ser prácticos, muy enfocados en poner estrategias a nuestro alcance, cómo —oportuna y metódicamente— abordar el proceso, cómo optimizar nuestras opciones, y cómo ir cambiando la trayectoria estudiantil para que desemboque en una universidad de prestigio. Soy, totalmente, jugadora en este juego. Siempre apuesto por el café.
