onald Trump says that he will make America great again. That slogan is even the title of his campaign webpage. Yet his approach of alienating Latinos seems unlikely to get them involved, especially in the fields of science and innovation where the U.S. has already been falling behind for decades.

We all know the stories of how the U.S. led the world in producing patents, new technology, developing vaccines and the superb science that enabled us to reach the moon in just a decade. Yet we didn’t just fall behind under Obama. On the contrary, we seem to have been so proud of surpassing the Russians during the Cold War that many of us didn’t notice as we fell behind the Japanese, and then the Koreans, Germans, Scandinavians and even Chinese and Indians and others in many areas of science, medicine and technology. My last three appointments with medical specialists were all with fairly recent third world immigrants. What about you?

One measure of the increasing U.S. lag was the sudden decline of U.S. students on international tests. Comparisons on the PISA (Program for International Student Achievement) tests since 1995 have shown that U.S. 15-year olds are far behind their peers overseas in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. In the most recent comparison by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), U.S. students ranked 21 out of 23 countries in math and science and 17 out of 19 in problem solving.

A recent Brookings Institution study, the Hamilton Project, identified three reasons why the U.S. has fallen behind. First, both public and private sector funding for research and development has declined dramatically since 1964. At first it was slow, but has accelerated since the 1980s.

Federal spending as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) has dropped from a robust 2.2% to just 1 percent. Cuts in government spending for basic science —something the private sector ignores almost completely in its pursuit of profit— is what have

No obstante su actitud negativa hacia los latinos presagia que los incluirá —especialmente en los campos de la tecnología y la innovación, donde los EEUU han retrocedido ya por décadas.

Una muestra del creciente retroceso de los EEUU fue la repentina baja del estudiantado estadounidense en los exámenes internacionales. La comparación en las pruebas del Programa del Rendimiento Estudiantil Internacional (PISA, por sus siglas en inglés) desde 1995 revela que los quinceañeros estadounidenses están muy rezagados respecto de sus pares extranjeros en las áreas STEM (ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas). La más reciente comparación hecha por la Organización para la Cooperación y Desarrollo Económico (OCDE) ubica al estudiante norteamericano en el 21º puesto de matemáticas entre 23 países, y en el 17º ente 19 para solventar problemas.

Un reciente estudio de la Institución Brookings —el Proyecto Hamilton— identificó tres razones por las que los EEUU se han rezagado. Primero, la financiación para investigación y desarrollo, tanto pública como privada, ha declinado dramáticamente desde 1964. Primero fue lento, pero se ha acelerado desde los 1980s. EL gasto federal como porcentaje del PIB ha bajado de un robusto 2,2% a solo un 1 por ciento. Recortes en el gasto gubernamental para ciencias básicas —algo que el sector privado ignora totalmente en su propósito de aumentar rentabilidad— es lo que más nos detiene. backs in government spending have actually created an impediment for innovation. Reductions in the budget for the U.S. Patent Office are directly tied to increasing the average length of time and raising the cost for granting a patent in the U.S. Since the Republican Revolution started cutting the funding in the 1990s, the time needed to register a new patent has risen from 18.3 to 35.3 months. Meanwhile, for the first time since the 19th century, the U.S. has fallen behind other countries in producing patents and technological innovations.

Third, Brookings says that the shortage of students in STEM fields and the low quality of public K-12 education in STEM subjects may be the most serious long term problem.

The report notes that just 15% of U.S. students specialize in STEM fields, while in countries that are surpassing the U.S., such as Korea, as many as 30% of their students pursue knowledge and careers in these areas. The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology calculated in 2012 that the U.S. needed to produce a million new STEM professionals a year, but our universities are producing less than 35% of what we need. Clearly, this helps explain why we are granting over 200,000 HIB visas a year for foreign professionals to come and take STEM jobs in the U.S., but this still falls drastically short of the need.

So what is the key for changing the trend?

A Pew Research Center report emphasizes: improving the quality and support for science education in public schools. In a Pew reported survey of members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science last year, only 16% of U.S. scientists rated K-12 STEM education in the U.S. to be among the best or above average in the world —46% rated it as below average.

So what do Latinos have to do with all this? Latinos already constitute the majority of students in K-12 education in California, and their proportion of the population is increasing across the country. If Trump (or any of the other candidates) is going to make America great again in science and innovation, it will have to be in large part through our Latino families and neighbors. Yet just 7% of our STEM workforce today is Latino. Rather than voicing policies that create distrust and animosity among Latinos, shouldn’t we be doing just the opposite to encourage them?

We must also ask who is responsible for the small proportion of Latinos who are interested in and preparing to enter STEM fields.

As we have found so many times before, Pogo is still right: “we have met the enemy and they are us.” Look what happens to Latinos in our schools today. National studies show 4 Joaquín MARCH 2016

that a majority of Latino freshmen (57%) start high school expressing interest in careers and advanced studies in STEM fields, but by the time they are seniors, just 28% remain interested. And after they start working on degrees in our universities, only 16% of the Latinos —compared to 25% of the whites— complete their degrees. Clearly, the filtering out of Latinos is one of the main reasons so few are in STEM fields.

On the other hand, why are the most popular degree programs for our Latino college students, the programs in social science, business, psychology and education, especially when these fields all pay far less than STEM jobs? These are all fields with greater numbers of Latino faculty and support systems, including greater economic assistance and job opportunities for students while they are studying. The low quality of high schools attended by Latinos, especially in STEM fields is well documented, but the type of opportunities for them in STEM fields as they continue also seems stacked against them.

Of course, the most common reason for nonGene Bigler, PhD Writer & consultant degree completion among on global affairs, Latinos is well known: former professor, economic pressure. In retired diplomat a major study of the disparity in the number of Latinos entering in public health fields, two University of Maryland researchers could find no link whatsoever to acculturation or cultural competency variables, “…but found that social and economic determinants are more important than culture.”1 So what happens if the economic pressures are leveled out, and the institutional environment becomes conducive to Latino achievement? The results are illustrated by what happens at Florida International University in Miami which leads the nation by far in producing Hispanic professionals and Ph.D.s in STEM fields.2 Just over half the students there are Latinos, and rather than shy away from STEM fields, they flock to them. Latinos account for 68% of the first degrees in biological

3 The idea that Latinos are culturally less inclined or less adept at STEM fields has also been dramatically rebuffed by the recent experience in the new technologically oriented universities of Mexico. Well-funded schools, such as the Autonomous University of Baja California, now produce far more quality professionals in STEM fields, including aerospace and computer science, than do their counterpart institutions north of the border. The result is that the share of new HIB visas going to Mexicans may be increasing even more rapidly than the pace of the increased construction of new fences and walls to keep Mexicans out. / La idea que los latinos son, culturalmente, menos inclinados o menos adeptos a las carreras STEM ha sido dramáticamente desmentida por la reciente experiencia de las nuevas universidades orientadas a la tecnología en México. El resultado será que la proporción de visas HIB a mexicanos ira creciendo mucho más rápido que las murallas que buscan mantenerlos fuera.

and biomedical sciences, 63% in engineering, 72% in physical sciences, 62% in computer science, and 91% in mathematics. What is especially distinctive at FIU are the mentoring programs that Latin American specialist President Mark B. Rosenberg has had his academic departments institute, as well as the opportunity for paid internships in these majors.3 California also has a number of colleges and universities that are highly rated as being Latino friendly, including CSU Stanislaus which actually ranks 25th in the nation. However, only three of the top 14, UC Riverside, UC Merced and Cal Poly Pomona, emphasize the STEM fields, as does FIU. And UC Merced, the only one in our great central valley, is also one of the smallest on the list.

Maybe Donald Trump’s magic wand will make America great again, or maybe we should remember how we once became great and offer the same quality of opportunity in the STEM fields that we once did to a new generation of students, who this time happen to be mostly Latinos.

Transgenic Tacos, Anyone? ¿Gustan un Taco Trans Genético?

Thomas Block, Stockton, CA This is the first of a series of articles concerning Monsanto Company in preparation for the Citizens Tribunal at The Hague against this multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation, culminating on October 16, 2016 World Food Day.

Este es el primer artículo de una serie sobre la Compañía Monsanto en anticipación al Tribunal Ciudadano de La Haya contra dicha corporación multinacional, agroquímica y de biotecnología agrícola, culminando el 16 de octubre, Día Mundial de la Alimentación de 2016.

a investigación en la política de las cosechas genéticamente-modificadas (GM) Roundup Ready es un fascinante estudio de un capitalismo ¡donde es más importante la codicia que la seguridad y consideración humana! Ya por el 2002 —y bajo los auspicios del TLCAN— agroempresas subsidiadas y mecanizadas como Monsanto, Conagra, Archer Daniels Midland, etc. estaban invadiendo las milpas de los campesinos mayas de México. El maíz genéticamente alterado que anualmente compraban a Monsanto los campesinos contribuía a su ciclo de peonaje transnacional. No podían competir en el mercado. Muestras de maíz producido en los estados de Oaxaca y Puebla ya revelaban que un 12% de las milpas estaban contaminadas con maíz GM. Representantes de Chiapas que asistieron al Foro Nacional de Defensa del Maíz Mexicano estaban preocupados que “compañías agroquímicas han patentado nuestro maíz natural de modo que tendremos que comprar maíz transgenético”1 Esta preocupación de los agricultores de Chiapas era, y todavía es, real —por ejemplo, según el Centro Africano para Bioseguridad, MON810, producto de Monsanto, “fue genéticamente interpuesto en la variedad de maíz egipcio denominado Ajeeb. Esta variedad, aunque egipcia, ha sido patentada por Monsanto.”

Monsanto no discrimina entre países de primer o tercer mundo… simplemente cambia de tácticas. En el 2013, en su tercer intento, Monsanto logró avanzar su Provisión de Garantía al Agricultor en el Congreso a pesar de la oposición del senador demócrata Jon Tester, agricultor orgánico de Montana.

he research on the politics of genetically-modified (GM) Roundup Ready crops is a fascinating study of capitalism’s priority of greed over safety and human concern! As early as 2002, and under the auspices of NAFTA, subsidized and mechanized multinational agribusinesses, represented by Monsanto, Conagra, Archer Daniels Midland, etc., were invading the milpas (cornfields) of Mayan campesinos (farmers) in Mexico. The genetically engineered corn annually purchased by the campesinos from Monsanto was contributing to their transnational cycle of peonage. They could not compete in the market place. Samplings of corn from the states of Oaxaca and Puebla were already displaying a 12% contamination of milpas with GM corn. Representatives from Chiapas attending the National Forum in Defense of Mexican Corn were concerned that “agro-chemical companies have patented our

natural corn so that we will then have to buy trans-genetic corn”1. This concern by Chiapas farmers was and still is real —for instance, according to the African Centre for Biosafety, MON810, a Monsanto product, was “genetically engineered into a local Egyptian maize variety called Ajeeb. This Egyptian variety has now been patented by Monsanto.”

Monsanto does not discriminate between first and third world countries… it simply changes tactics. In 2013, on its third attempt, Monsanto was able to lobby its Farmer Assurance Provision through Congress over the objection of Democratic Senator Jon Tester, an organic farmer from Montana. As researched by Rekha Basu of Scripps Howard News Service, this provision, anonymously attached to the 2013 budget bill at the very last minute, “takes away the power of U.S. courts to block the planting and sale of genetically modified seeds [even] if evidence indicates they are harmful.” Other than Senator Tester’s objection, there were no hearings or reviews conducted concerning what is now called the “Monsanto Protection Act.” Tactics may piggyback on NAFTA or they can be lobbied to politicians.

Let’s review three of Monsanto’s tactics in the US: • Monsanto’s controversial growth hormone for cows (Posilac or rBGH) “was approved by Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto lobbyist-turned-USDA-administrator-turned-FDA Deputy Commissioner, even though it was banned in the European Union, Japan, Australia and Canada over health concerns. The hormone was approved in the U.S. after Monsanto employee Margaret Miller oversaw a report on its safety, took a job at the FDA [Deputy Director], and promptly approved her own report2.”

• Islam Siddiqui —Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR)— a former Monsanto lobbyist, “wrote the USDA’s organic food standards, allowing irradiated and genetically modified foods to label themselves as organic.”3 • And finally, Monsanto, which controls 95% of the U.S. sugar beet market, had the USDA deregulate beets to overrule a federal judge who had halted Monsanto’s genetically engi- continued on next page MARCH 2016 Joaquín 5

neered Roundup Ready sugar beets4.

Apparently, this is how Monsanto advocates “for supportive policies, regulation and laws!”

Then, fibbing is another tactic, old but still effective. In 2009, a French court found Monsanto guilty of lying concerning its combo alachlor-glyphosate Lasso weed killer, produced and sold by the company in France.

The Court ruled that the weed killer was not biodegradable, was not environmentally friendly, and did not leave the soil clean as advertised. By the time the French Supreme Court upheld the lower court decision in 2015, it recognized in its MSDS —material safety data sheet— that the herbicide can cause liver and/or kidney damage, can cause permanent eye injury, and, finally, “may cause cancer.”

Still, there is hope. On November 11, 2015, Dow AgroSciences had its herbicide Enlist Duo approval rescinded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The reasoning behind the EPA’s change of heart was that “new information” revealed a “greater toxicity” of the glyphosate and 2,4-D cocktail which in September and October of 2014 “met safety standards for public, agricultural workers and endangered species.”5 Perhaps Dow should concentrate in placing its proponents in governmental offices as Monsanto has done! Thirty-five former and current Monsanto-related individuals hold high-level positions with access to presidents, vice-presidents, cabinet holders and Congress members.

Most notable are the following: Hillary Clinton who was employed by the Rose Law Firm, a Monsanto counsel; Clarence Thomas, a former lawyer for Monsanto, who refused to recuse himself from the Bowman v. Monsanto U.S. Supreme Court decision; and Donald Rumsfeld, a former CEO of Searle which merged with Monsanto and who had the sweetener Aspartame legalized. The list goes on and on.

Law firms —such as the Miller Law Firm and Saiontz & Kirk— are finally lining up litigants now that the World Health Organization has warned that the weed killer glyphosate is a probable carcinogen, and that financial compensation may be available through a Roundup lawsuit for individuals. Claims can be filed for 1) failure to adequately research the potential link between Roundup and cancer, 2) failure to warn consumers about the risks associated with Roundup exposure, 3) failure to ensure that workers received adequate protection against the potential side effects of Roundup, 4) misrepresenting the safety of Roundup for decades and, 5) negligently disregarding the potential Roundup risks.6 This will be a tooth-n-nail, uphill battle!

La hormona fue aprobada en los EEUU luego que Margaret Miller, empleada de Monsanto, se convirtiera en Directora Interina de la FDA, y esta no perdió Thomas Block tiempo en aprobar su Stockton, CA propio informe”.2 • Islam Siddiqui —Negociador Jefe de Agricultura en la Oficina del Representante de Intercambio Estadounidense (USTR)— ex-cabildero de Monsanto, “escribió las normativas de los alimentos orgánicos, permitiendo que comidas irradiadas y genéticamente modificadas se pudiesen etiquetar como orgánicas”3 • Finalmente Monsanto, que controla el 85% del mercado de la remolacha azucarera estadounidense, hizo que el USDA desregulara la remolacha para desautorizar a un juez federal que había suspendido la remolacha genéticamente modificada de Monsanto Roundup Ready.4 Aparentemente es así como Monsanto promueve “el respaldo a sus políticas, regulaciones y leyes”.

Después, el engaño es otra táctica. Antigua, pero efectiva. En el 2009 un tribunal francés declaró Monsanto culpable de mentir sobre su combinado herbicida alachlor-glyphosate Lasso, producido y vendido por esta compañía en Francia. El tribunal dictaminó que —contrario a lo que publicitaba— el herbicida no es biodegradable, no es ecológico ni deja el suelo limpio. Para cuando en el 2015 la Corte Suprema Francesa corroboró la decisión del tribunal inferior, se había agregado a la hoja de datos de seguridad del material (MSDS) que el herbicida podía causar daño al hígado y al riñón, causar lesión permanente a los ojos y, finalmente, posiblemente cáncer.

A pesar de todo esto, hay esperanzas.

El 11 de noviembre del 2015, la Agencia de Protección al Medioambiente (EPA) le retiró la aprobación al herbicida Enlist Duo, de Dow AgroSciences. Treinta y cinco personas con afiliación actual o previa a Monsanto tienen altos puestos con acceso a presidentes, vicepresidentes, miembros del gabinete y del Congreso. Los más destacados son Hillary Clinton —previamente empleada por el bufete jurídico Rose Law Firm, abogados de Monsanto; Clarence Thomas, antiguo abogado de Monsanto y quien se negó a excusarse en la decisión por la Corte Suprema de los EEUU de Bowman vs. Monsanto; y Donald Rumsfeld, ex director de Searle, la que se fusionó con Monsanto y quien hizo que se legalizara el endulzante Aspartame. aniel, I need you at the prison.

Please come as soon as you can.”

Whenever Madre Antonia called -- which she’d done often during my pastoral year at Tijuana’s major seminary -- I never said “I’ll think about it,” much less “no”. So within an hour or so, we met at the gates of Tijuana’s notorious incarcerated city, La Mesa.

This intimidating jungle of inmates, male and female, and even of entire families, was no place to enter casually.

I’d never taken for granted as a seminarian —and later, as a priest — walking safely among las tumbas (inhumanely small sleeping cells), eating food prepared by inmates, crawling in and out of smoke-filled crevasses, and stepping out again from the chain of locking chambers leading back to freedom.

Having served two years in Stockton, I’d returned to Tijuana. There, at the prison gates, the one they called la Mamá, la Ángel de la Cárcel, was waiting for me with a big smile and a hug. But we didn’t have time to talk: “She is waiting for you.”

Madre Antonia, then in her early seventies, radiated compassion and peace.

Long ago, she’d moved from California to dedicate herself full-time to the unfortunate of this concentrated slum of corruption, of crime, and of endless waiting for a trial that might never happen. Such was the case for the one who awaited our visit. Her name was Olivia, and she was dying. She’d wanted to confess, but by the time we reached the pathetic, damp, dark and cramped space where she lay, the poor woman could no longer speak. I took her frail, cold hand, made the sign of the cross, and began to pray. She faintly squeezed my wrist; her eyes barely opened. The shadows were falling on her.

Olivia, Madre Antonia later told me, was both a victim of circumstances and a hero.

When her two youngest children began dying of AIDS, Olivia discovered that her husband was infected. After the tragedy of losing her children, her husband followed.

Now, she was left to fend for herself and her two older boys. They lived in one of the thousands of hovels which sprang up along

Before long, and with little prospects for the future, the boys followed in their father’s footsteps, using and selling drugs. Meanwhile, Olivia herself fell ill of the same disease which had left her family in ruins. Without an income, she couldn’t afford to be admitted even to the hospital which had been established to serve the poor.

One day police beat at her door. Entering, they searched everywhere and found contraband. In Mexico, this meant immediate incarceration with no guarantee of due process or a timely trial. “Whose drugs are these?” demanded the agents. Olivia was speechless —she had already lost continued on next page

Cuando fuera llamase la Madre Antonia —lo que era frecuente durante mi año pastoral en el principal seminario de Tijuana— nunca dije, “déjeme ver”, menos “no”.

En eso de una hora nos juntamos en el portón de la tristemente célebre ciudad encarcelada de La Mesa.

Esta intimidante jungla de reclusos, hombres y mujeres, incluso familias enteras, no era un lugar para llegar y entrar. Nunca tuve garantizada mi seguridad —primero como seminarista y más tarde como sacerdote— caminando entre las tumbas (celdas inhumanamente reducidas), comiendo lo que preparaban los reclusos, deslizándome entre grietas humeantes, para finalmente atravesar la sucesión de rejas que llevaban de vuelta a la libertad.

Después de dos años de servicio en Stockton volví a Tijuana. Allí, en las puertas de la prisión, la que llamaban la mamá, o la ángel de la cárcel estaba esperándome con una gran sonrisa y un abrazo. Pero no había tiempo para hablar: “te está esperando”.

La Madre Antonia, ya en sus setenta años, radiaba compasión y tranquilidad. Hacía ya mucho tiempo se había mudado desde California a dedicarse de tiempo completo a servir a los desdichados de este tugurio de corrupción, de crimen e interminable espera de ese juicio que quizá nunca se celebre.

Uno de esos casos era el de quien nos aguardaba. Su nombre era Olivia, y agonizaba. Quería confesarse, pero para cuando arribamos el patético, húmedo, oscuro y estrecho espacio donde yacía, la pobre mujer ya no podía hablar. Le tomé su frágil y fría mano, hice la señal de la cruz, y comencé a rezar. Ella apenas me apretó la muñeca; apenas abrió los ojos. Las sombras ya descendían sobre ella.

Olivia, más tarde me aclaró la Madre Antonia, fue tanto víctima de las circunstancias como heroína.

Cuando sus hijos menores comenzaron a morirse de SIDA, Olivia descubrió que su marido era el infectado. Luego de la tragedia de perderlos, los siguió su marido. her husband and two children and could not bear losing the others. With no money for a bribe, she lied: “They are mine.”

The time had come to leave. I asked for Jesus to redeem the broken life of this woman, and to reward her sacrifices, and to deliver her sons. We left the prison in silence.

The next morning, my cell phone rang early. “Daniel, she’s at the hospital. Hurry.”

Antonia didn’t have to specify which hospital, department, or with whom I should speak. I’d spent countless hours there, at the bedside of patients whose families could not afford to bring them home, or to pay for the treatment they needed. Often enough, as with today, there was nothing to do but walk a dying person across the threshold. That morning, I remembered so many cases. Just a few feet from where I found Olivia, only three years before, I had held dying patients as they surrendered to the inevitable.

One floor up I’d gone to visit a 24-year-old who’d peddled herself on the streets, selling her body to make ends meet. She’d lost her only daughter, contracting tuberculosis and AIDS. This last time, she asked me for a very personal favor: “Padre, please comb my hair.” I hadn’t ever done this before, and felt incompetent, but the nurse said, “She just wants to know somebody cares.” So I did my best, while praying, until Monica ceased to breath. Mother Antonia never forgot that, reminding me of it from time to time. Even today, remembering the expression on that dying child’s face, I still cry.

Olivia was lying there in agony, her shallow breaths growing weaker. We’d brought a brightly painted burlap Guadalupe tilma.

It was folded neatly, tucked into a simple pouch. Once again, I offered prayers to ease her passing-over from this life into paradise.

Since there wasn’t room to open the tilma to its full stature, I simply unveiled the Virgin’s face, placing it next to Olivia’s, and waited in silence. Then, as quiet as that hour at dawn when the shepherds arrived in Bethlehem, or that second in which the eyes of the Christchild opened for the very first time, Olivia’s eyes opened, ever so slightly, and fixed on the face of Our Lady. Then, like the first dewdrop that ever fell in the Garden of Eden, a single, solitary tear welled up in her right eye, flowing until it merged into the image of Mary’s face.

Olivia was no longer with us. Mary had gathered her up into her motherly arms. In Heaven, she was being embraced by the God whose mercy had brought us together.

her mission for another fifteen years, never flagging in her zeal. She also died there in Tijuana, surrounded by those she had inspired and served, at the age of 86. From Heaven, she still watches over La Mesa.

On New Year’s Day (2016), I stood beneath the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the Basilica in Mexico City. We could hear the words of consecration echoing from the Mass in honor of the Mother of God: “Take and eat... this is my body; take and drink...this is my blood...” It seemed as if Olivia was there, at the Virgin’s side, repeating these words from Heaven. After all, she had lived them fully here on Earth.

As we returned once again from Mexico City on February 17th, Pope Francis was speaking to the incarcerated of Ciudad Juarez.

Here are just a few words which he shared with the world: “Divine Mercy reminds us that prisons are a symptom of the condition of our society; they are in many cases symptomatic of the Dean McFalls French Camp, CA silences and omissions provoked by a culture of discarding. They are symptoms of a culture which no longer advocates for life; of a society which little by little has been abandoning its own children.”

The Holy Father was also speaking to Monica, Olivia and Madre Antonia. I close, then, by asking these women in heaven to pray for each one of us who cares about the dignity of the human person and for all those who spend their lives in the service of others.

It’s no coincidence that the women I’ve remembered today -- including Our Lady of Guadalupe -- were all mothers. In Heaven, they are madres devotas for all eternity.

Un día la policía llegó a su casa y, esculcando y esculcando, hallaron drogas. En México eso es sinónimo de encarcelamiento inmediato sin garantía de debido proceso o un juicio en tiempo razonable. “¿De quién son estas drogas?” exigieron saber los policías.

Olivia no supo que decir —ya había perdido

a su marido y dos niños… no soportaría perder a los que le quedaban. Sin dinero para un soborno, mintió: “Son mías”.

Llegó el momento de irnos. Pedí que Jesús redimiera la azorada vida de esta mujer y que recompensara sus sacrificios y salvara a sus hijos. Dejamos la prisión en silencio. El teléfono sonó temprano a la mañana siguiente.

“Daniel, está en el hospital. Apúrate”.

Antonia no tenía que especificar cuál hospital, departamento, ni con quien había que hablar. Había pasado innumerables horas allí, al lado de la cama de pacientes cuyas familias no ni podían pagar para llevárselos a casa ni por el tratamiento que necesitaban. Muchas veces, como ésta, no había nada que hacer más que aliviarles el traspaso del umbral. Esa mañana me trajo muchos recuerdos. Tres años atrás, a solo unos metros de donde yacía Olivia, había sostenido agonizantes pacientes en el momento que se rendían a lo inevitable.

Un piso más arriba había visitado a una joven de 24 años que vendía su cuerpo en las calles para poder comer. Había perdido a su única hija, y enfermado de tuberculosis y SIDA. Esa última vez, me pidió un favor muy personal: “Padre, péineme”. Nunca había hecho eso antes y no sabía cómo, pero la enfermera dijo, “solo quiere sentir que hay alguien a quién ella le importa”. Lo hice lo mejor que pude, mientras rezaba, hasta que Mónica dejó de respirar. La Madre Antonia nunca lo olvidó; recordándomelo de vez en cuando. Incluso hoy, al acordarme de la expresión de su moribunda carita, casi infantil, lloro.

Olivia agonizaba, su respiración ahogada, cada vez más débil. Habíamos traído una colorida tilma de Guadalupe. Doblada cuidadosamente en un simple bultito. Una vez más ofrecí plegarias para aliviar su paso de esta vida al paraíso. Como no había espacio para abrir toda la tilma, solo desdoblé la cara de la Virgen, poniéndola junto a Olivia, esperando en silencio.

Entonces, tan sereno como la hora del amanecer cuando los pastores llegaron a Belén, o ese segundo cuando los ojos del Cristo-niño se abrieron por primera vez, los párpados de Olivia se abrieron apenas, fijando la vista en la faz de Nuestra Señora. En silencio, como la primera gota de rocío en el Jardín del Edén, una solitaria lágrima dejó su ojo derecho, rodando hasta juntarse con la faz de María.

Olivia ya no estaba entre nosotros. María la había tomado entre sus brazos maternales.

En el Cielo, estaba siendo abrazada por Dios, cuya misericordia no había juntado.

En lo que respecta a la Madre Antonia, continuó su misión por otros quince años, nunca flaqueando. Murió también en Tijuana, rodeada por aquellos a quienes sirvió, a los 86 años. Desde el Cielo, continúa en pág. 27

“Students in Stockton, the students that I teach, look out their window to see jobs like McDonald’s, Target and/or the military.”

So how do we change a San Joaquin Valley’s student’s image of where they see themselves?

The Jose M. Hernandez Reaching for the Stars Foundation (RFTSF) has a good idea as to how to show them how exciting technology can be by developing programs that give them real world opportunities to experience STEM first hand!

Over the past eight years, the Foundation has created and executed programs such as two annual Science Blast events and one Prep USA/STEM Summer Academy; financial support is given through their scholarship fund and —most importantly— as role models through motivational presentations by former NASA Astronaut Jose Hernandez and his Tierra Luna Engineering Team.

The purpose of the annual Blast events is for parents and children experience space science’s hands-on activities in an informal setting that emphasizes the importance of STEM. The Summer Academy is a collaborative effort with the Stockton Unified School District, the RFTSF, and University of the Pacific’s Tomorrow Project. The goal is to encourage junior and high school students to begin preparing for continued on next page

Y ¿Cómo se puede cambiar la imagen que el estudiante del Valle San Joaquín tiene de para dónde va?

La Fundación Alcanzando la Estrellas (RFTSF, siglas en inglés) de José M. Hernández tiene una buena idea de cómo… mostrándoles cuán excitante puede ser la tecnología, desarrollando programas que les permitan experimentar STEM ¡por ellos mismos!

Por los pasados ocho años la Fundación ha creado y ejecutado programas como dos eventos Science Blast (Despegue de Ciencias) y una academia veraniega USA/STEM; asistencia económica a través de su fondo de becas y —de lo más importante— siendo ejemplos por medio de conferencias motivacionales presentadas por el ex-astronauta José Hernández y su Equipo de Ingenieros Tierra Luna.

El propósito de estos eventos anuales es que los padres y niños experimenten ciencia espacial en actividades prácticas, en un ambiente informal que, al mismo tiempo, resalta la importancia de las STEM. scientific and engineering career paths early on, targeting underrepresented population groups. To enhance student support there is a separate STEM instructional component for parents of participating students.

That’s not all. In order to create excitement for our next generation of scientists and engineers, RFTSF has created a consortium of expertise by uniting industry partners such as Tierra Luna Engineering, JP Aerospace and NASA AMES professionals, with other supporters such as the Patriots Jet Team Foundation (PJTF) and with higher education institutions such as San Joaquin Delta College and the University of the Pacific, and with Stockton Unified, Tracy Unified and the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

This consortium has been pursuing funding for their flagship project, Touch Space —an effort to bring space science STEM related projects to the underserved students.

This project will allow students to construct and launch small “satellites” (PongSats, MiniCubes and CanSats) to the edge of space via high altitude balloons in order to collect environmental data and to understand the effects of space environment. While accomplishing this task, students will experience firsthand the importance of collecting precise scientific measurements using an engineering process related to the construction, testing and launching of small satellites.

Our team is proud to have joined nearly 150 public and private sector organizations who answered the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics’ during this year’s call to action, and did with their flagship project.

Tomorrow (Mañana) de la Universidad del Pacífico. El objetivo es entusiasmar a estudiantes de escuela intermedia y secundaria para que se preparen para carreras científicas y de ingeniería desde temprano, enfocándose en grupos marginados. Para mejorar el apoyo al estudiante se incluye un componente, separado, para los padres de los participantes.

Eso no es todo. Para crear expectación en nuestra futura generación de científicos e ingenieros, la RFTSF ha creado un ‘consorcio de expertos’ unificando colaboradores en la industria como profesionales de Tierra Luna Engineering, JP Aerospace y NASA AMES; con otros respaldos como la Fundación Grupo Patriot Jet (PJTF); con instituciones de estudios superiores como la Universidad Comunitaria San Joaquín Delta y la Universidad del Pacífico, y con los distritos escolares de Stockton y Tracy, y la Oficina de Educación del Condado San Joaquín. NFL: Playing Head Games

A

dark cloud loomed over the 50th Super Bowl. Recent scientific research has made it increasingly difficult for the National Football League (NFL) to deny serious brain injuries among its players.

The problem is that brain injuries can only be proven after death. Unbelievably, former superstars are donating their brains to science in order to prove the NFL has failed to provide protection or early warnings. Former NFL players are suffering memory loss, dementia and depression. However their disability insurance programs and unions don’t consider these “football injuries.”

According to the University of North Carolina’s National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research (NCCSIR) report, by December 1st, at least 19 students had died playing football in 2015. Many more have been seriously injured. The famous quarterback Ken Stabler (1945-2015) directed his brain be studied after his death. Researchers found he suffered from ‘Stage 3’ injuries with lesions.

This explains why his mind slipped so many times during his final years of life. Linebacker, Tiaina “Junior” Seau, committed suicide only three years of retirement, and NFL player and TV personality, Frank Gliford, was first famous for being knocked unconscious during a game.

In April 2015 —in a delayed reaction to a $765 million damage settlement with 4, 500 retired players— the NFL established new rules and new sports equipment. Manufactures have come up with a new helmet designed to set off flashing lights when someone gets their “bell rung.” This new technology will be used by selected players of 16 professional teams and a dozen colleges. Another helmet manufacturer claims their product is able to reduce the impact of head to head collisions. New helmets flex, so as to absorb the impact and have padding on the inside of the shell, said to reduce the blow.

Designers do not state their equipment will reduce concussions or injury. Doctors report that many football concussions are caused by

Pope Pins Hopes on the Americas

s we write, Pope Francis has not yet concluded his historic 2016 visit to the Americas. It started on February 12 in Cuba where he met Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, the first meeting between a Pope and leader of the Russian church since the 11th Century division of the western and eastern churches. The 30point joint declaration the two leaders issued provides a fascinating insight into the vision this self-described “missionary of mercy and peace” seems especially intent on pursuing in the Americas.

After arriving in Mexico on the 13th, the Pope started a busy itinerary that recalls the hectic pace of previous large country visits to the U.S., Brazil and the Philippines. However, the structure of his concerns is now increasingly apparent in the pattern of the audiences he engages. He will center his visit on Mexico City, but also travel to one of the city’s poorest suburbs in Ecatepec de Morelos, the most symbolic center of indigenous Mexico in Chiapas, the revolutionary city of Morelia in Michoacan, and Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso.

As important as the places, Pope Francis will be visiting a series of audiences. He started with the political and religious authorities in Mexico City, charging the government to protect the basic rights of the citizens and for all to combat the individualism that has given rise to so much violence, corruption and drug problems. From there he will go on to celebrate popular masses, visit the sick and vulnerable in a major hospital, have an encounter with the world of culture, commune with indigenous peoples, hold conclaves with families, young people and workers, recognize historic sites of political and religious struggles and conclude with stops focused on Mexico’s diaspora experience with the United States.

This first American Pope seems especially intent on touching us all in the Americas when he visits anywhere in this region. Why else would he include the U.S.-Mexico border region in this trip and work so hard to overcome the increasing breach with the secular and political left, as shown in his visits to Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil? He is again chipping away at the historic gulf between the U.S. and Cuba, and the rest of his

El primer Papa americano parece muy interesado en tocarnos a todos en las Américas cada vez que visita la región ¿Por qué, si no, incluiría la región fronteriza México-EEUU en este viaje, o trabajar tanto en superar la creciente brecha con la izquierda secular y política, como lo evidencia sus visitas a Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay y Brasil? Está, una vez más, labrando en el histórico golfo entre los Estados unidos y Cuba; y, en el resto de sus viajes en México, parece involucrarse más con los problemas que enfrentan a México y los EEUU. Fremont Plays the White House

H

uge congratulations to the Fremont Elementary School Mariachi Los Toritos Band which performed by invitation in Washington, DC for artistic ensembles this week. The group also participated a very special workshop that included First Lady Michelle Obama, rock star Demi Lovato and television star Jussie Smollett.

Eleven fifth through eighth graders —directed and coached by Cesar Chavez High School music instructor Luis “Tito” Talamantes— were invited as part of the Turnaround Project in California, a collaborative between the President’s Committee on the Arts, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts and other partners.

The students arrived in D.C. Saturday, saw the sights Sunday and performed for the National Endowment for the Arts among other groups Monday. Tuesday they got a behind the scenes look at the National Museum and attended a special study of blues great Ray Charles.

Wednesday they joined the other 130 students from throughout the country for a workshop led by the First Lady and featuring Lovato, Smollett, singers Andra Day and Leon Bridges, and Gospel artist Yolanda Adams.

The students were given the opportunity to interview the stars and then present to the full group on what they learned.

The trip marked the first time most of the Fremont students had traveled out of the state.

They were thrilled to meet the dignitaries and see the nation’s capital. Special thanks to Fremont Principal Joseph Martinez, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator Cynthia Wildman, and Administrative Assistant Jennifer Dodge who helped make this spectacular trip possible for SUSD students.

Los estudiantes arribaron al Distrito de Columbia el sábado, turistearon el domingo, y el lunes actuaron junto a otros grupos para la NEA. El martes hicieron un recorrido “tras bambalinas” al Museo Nacional y presenciaron una especial sesión con el famoso blusero Ray Charles.

STEM begins with 5th Grade Math

f your student wants to be a doctor, chemical engineer, computer scientist, technology guru, app creator, rocket scientist, marine biologist, or neurosurgeon then listen to this truth: All things point to 5th grade math.

Going to a Saturday robot-building workshop won’t get your student into STEM. Listening to an inspirational speaker talk about becoming a doctor won’t get your student into STEM. Hashtagging clever words about getting more Latin@s in STEM won’t get your student into STEM. Our kids are not failing to get into STEM because of their lack of interest. Or that we lack community champions touting STEM. Or that parents are neglecting to encourage their kids to pursue STEM. Or that teachers are not infusing STEM into lesson plans. Or that STEM is not prominently shared on social media.

Our kids are not getting into STEM because our focus is misdirected. We need to shift our attention to 5th grade math.

5th grade math is the catalyst for all STEM related majors. It is where most of our Latino, Native American, and African-American students get weeded out of STEM programs.

Fifth grade math is more closely related to your high school senior’s class schedule than any other subject. 5th grade math is more closely related to your kid getting into a STEM program in college than any other factor.

Unfortunately, this news is not on most parents’ radar.

Fig.1 (right) shows how math courses are correlated to admission in a STEM program for most competitive colleges. This is the profile for students seeking admission to a more selective college pursuing a STEM major but, even if your student pursues a California community college transfer route, or enrolls in the local California State University, math is still going to be a big factor. There is no escaping the math requirement. It doesn’t matter if your student declares an environmental engineering major or pre-medicine. Math trumps all.

If math is so important for STEM majors, how come our students are not aware of why and how this matters so much? Because they are not thinking about it in 5th grade. To understand the appro- continued on next page

El asistir un sábado a un taller donde se construirá un robot no pondrá a su hijo en STEM. Escuchar a un conferencista motivacional sobre cómo llegó a ser doctor no pondrá a su estudiante en STEM. Hashtagging ingeniosas palabras sobre cómo vincular más latin@s en STEM no pondrá a su hija en STEM. No es que nuestros chicos no entren en STEM por falta de interés. O que no haya activistas comunitarios promoviendo STEM. O que los padres no estén animando a sus hijos en STEM. O que los maestros no estén enfatizando STEM en sus planes de estudio. O que no se hable de STEM en los medios sociales.

Nuestros chicos no están en STEM porque nuestro enfoque está desviado: hay que ponerle atención a las matemáticas de 5ºgrado.

Las matemáticas de quinto primario son el portón a todas las carreras STEM. Es donde la mayoría de nuestros estudiantes latinos, indoamericanos y afroamericanos se quedan fuera de los programas STEM. No hay manera de darle la vuelta.

No importa si su hijo declara querer estudiar ingeniería medioambiental o pre-medicina… las matemáticas van a estar ahí.

priate grade-level math track, at right ( fig.2) is an illustration representing two different mathematics pathways for middle school and high school students – one is a traditional schedule and the other is accelerated.

So what can you do to ensure your student is on the right track in mathematics for a STEM major?

First, make sure your fifth grader is earning strong grades in Common Core Math. If they require tutoring, get them tutoring! Even if your student is not earning all A’s in math in 5th grade, don’t discount their potential. Focus on learning and re-learning math fundamentals before moving into an accelerated program.

Second, if your student has top scores in 5th grade math and shows a strong interest and ability in this area, consider having her/ him tested for an accelerated schedule that begins in middle school. We did this for our son, Emilio, in the summer before he began 6th grade. The combination of his standardized test scores and the exam for an accelerated program was enough to earn him a spot in a very small cohort of students. He is still on that track today, and is scheduled to start Geometry as a Freshman in High School.

Lastly, keep careful watch of your student’s class schedule to ensure s/he is assigned the right math courses to finish senior year of high school in one of the two tracks illustrated in fig.2. Remember, the track in darker background is the standard for selective colleges; however, following this track also creates an exceptional profile for students seeking admission to non-selective state colleges. In fact, a student with this type of math profile has extraordinary odds of receiving generous merit-based scholarships at non highly selective colleges.

Bottom line: math is king. Your student’s trajectory to the right math curriculum starts in the 5th grade. While it’s not impossible for a student to earn admission to a STEM program in college without following one of these tracks, the odds are extremely rare. In a nutshell, let’s backward design this:

1. To become a neurosurgeon, research scientist, or software engineer, a college degree is required.

2. To earn the college degree in a related STEM field, prerequisite math courses are required.

3. To get into the college as a STEM major, prerequisite math courses are required in high school.

4. To get into the right math courses in high school, prerequisite math courses must be completed in middle school.

5. To get into the right middle school math courses, students must be on track to transition from 5th grade math to middle school math.

Y ¿Qué puede hacer usted para cerciorarse que su hijo está en el camino matemático correcto para una carrera STEM? Primero, asegúrese que su estudiante obtenga buenas calificaciones en matemáticas en el Plan Básico. Se necesita ayudantía ¡consígasela!

Incluso si su niño no obtiene As en el quinto grado, no pierda las esperanzas. Enfóquese en el aprendizaje y repaso de matemáticas básicas antes de buscar un programa acelerado.

Segundo, si su estudiante obtiene los más altos puntajes en matemáticas de quinto y muestra un gran interés y talento en esta área, considere que lo pongan a prueba para el calendario acelerado que da comienzo en la escuela intermedia. Unequal Enforcement of the Law s a result of a number of interrelated factors, Mexican Americans were denied “equal protection under the law” and “due process of law.” Among other things, language differences, racism, and vigilante groups contributed to this condition.

The accusation by a Euro American that a Spanish speaking person had committed a crime was tantamount on being tried, convicted and sentenced. Vigilante committees made short work of a perceived Mexican threat to the Euro American community’s law and order. In California, “...lynching and hangings of Mexicans were common place occurrences in the mines and fields of the North, and many sought refuge in the Mexican cow counties of the South. Mexican Americans suffered injustices not only from encounters with Anglos but at the hands of the legal and judicial system, as well. Crime was rampant in Los Angeles and relations degenerated into a race war”1.

The new Euro American law enforcement institutions ignored the chaos that ensued in Mexican American communities after Mexican institutions were dismantled. The following excerpts, from a letter written by an unidentified Frenchmen and printed in a French-language newspaper2, illustrates the type of justice minus “equal protection” and “due process of law” given to Spanish speaking people:

A

“And the band continued robbing and killing with all security, by the light of day and in the middle of the city under the chin of the police officials who seem to view this as a comedy.

This is not strange; they say ‘the Mexicans are killing each other’ (…) four of five Americans have established a Vigilante Committee (…) here is where the drama begins with all its horrors (…) In a few words, a company —all Americans— its captain Sanford, headed toward the Mission of San Gabriel. All the Mexican residents in that place were arrested and treated with unequaled brutality.

Two of these unfortunates had been arrested at the entrance of the Mission. They had to submit to an interrogation… intimidated by the threats, and impelled by the instinct of self preservation, they began to run… a general volley followed. One fell wounded… the other concealed himself in the rushes. The American band arrived, set fire to the marsh. And very soon, among the general cries of gaiety, they discovered the head of the unfortunate above the flames. A second volley and all was done… the body, loaded over a horse, was transported to the Mission in the midst continued on next page

Ley Dispareja roducto de una serie de factores interconectados, al mexicanoamericano se le negó tanto “igualdad ante la ley” como “un debido proceso”. Entre otras cosas, diferencias de lenguaje, racismo y grupos vigilantes contribuyeron a esta condición: que un euroamericano acusara a un hispanoparlante era garantía de juicio, culpabilidad y sentencia.

Comités de vigilantes no demoraban en eliminar cualquier amenaza al orden y ley de la comunidad euroamericana. En California “los linchamientos y ahorcamientos de mexicanos eran cosa de todos los días en las minas y campos del norte, y muchos buscaron refugio en los condados vaqueros al sur. Los mexicoamericanos no solo experimentaron injusticias a manos de los angloamericanos, sino también del sistema judicial. El crimen en Los Ángeles estaba sin control y las relaciones degeneraron en una guerra racial”.1 Las nuevas instituciones policiales euroamericanas se desentendieron del caos que se desencadenó en las comunidades mexicoamericanas una vez que se desmanteló el orden mexicano. Los siguientes fragmentos, parte de una carta escrita por un francés anónimo y publicado en un periódico en esa lengua2 ilustra el tipo de justicia carente de “igualdad ante la ley” y “debido proceso” aplicado al hispanohablante: “Y la banda continuó robando y matando sin miedo, a la luz del día y en el medio de la ciudad bajo las barbas de las autoridades policiales quienes parecían ver todo esto como un show. Esto no es raro; dicen que ‘los mexicanos se matan unos a otros’ (…) cuatro o cinco anglos han establecido un Comité de Vigilantes (…) aquí es donde comienza el drama con todos sus horrores (…) en pocas palabras, una compañía —todos anglos— su capitán Sanford, enfilaron hacia la Misión San Gabriel. Detuvieron a todos los residentes mexicanos en ese lugar y los trataron con una brutalidad sin parangón.

Dos de estos infortunados habían sido arrestados en la entrada a la Misión y sometidos a un interrogatorio… amedrentados por las amenazas e impulsados por el instinto de supervivencia se echaron a correr… los siguió una balacera generalizada.

Uno cayó herido… el otro se escondió entre los juncos. La banda anglosajona llegó al lugar y le prendió fuego al pantano. Muy luego —y ante el entusiasmo y vitoreo general— descubrieron la cabeza del desgraciado sobre las llamas. Una segunda ráfaga y acabó todo… el cuerpo, cargado sobre un caballo, fue trasladado a la Misión entre vivas y gritos de gozo, tirado al suelo entre la excitada turba. of cries and shouts and joy and gaiety [and] thrown to the ground in the midst of the mob. One being, with a human face, stepped forward with the knife in this hand… with one hand he took the head of the dead man by its long hair, separated it from the body, flung it a short distance and stuck his dagger in the heart of the cadaver. Afterward, returning to the head, he made it roll with his foot into the middle of his band and the rabble; amidst the cries and the hurrahs of the greater number (…) Another band arrived from another place with two Californios. They had been arrested as suspects… the cries of ‘To death! To death!’ were heard from all sides. The cutter of heads entered his house, coming out with some ropes, and the two unfortunates were hanged… that barbarian , the mutilator of cadavers, is the Justice of the Peace of San Gabriel! (…) On the road from Tejon….two poor peddlers (always Mexicans) who were arrested and hanged as suspects.”

During this period the lynching of Mexicans became so common place that Mexicans came to know Anglo-American democracy as “Lynchocracy”3.

the formation of residential and socially segregated barrios or neighborhoods ensued.

The process was more than simple segregation and intertwined economic, social, and demographic forces. Barrioization meant the virtual elimination of the Mexican from the social and political life of the community at large; through isolation Chicanos became invisible, if not nonexistent. The Scientology of the Barrio

A

ccording to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, science is the “knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation.” For me, Science for me has always been an intriguing field of study. The few required Science courses I took in high school and college, I found exciting.

I loved messing with the flasks and Bunsen burners of my high school Biology class, learning about atoms, nuclei, protons, cells, amoebas, and dissecting frogs, etc… shoot! I had even dissected a few snails, grasshoppers, cockroaches and flies of my own! But more, I loved Marlene, the beautiful White girl who sat next to me in Biology class. She was, well, a scientific wonder, and I spent much time observing her.

Growing up in the barrio, we practiced our own brand of science. For instance, one day I took my bow out on the street in front of my house. I aimed it straight into the sky, pulled

the string back as far as I could and launched an arrow. To my amazement (and terror) it disappeared! I froze! I had heard that “what goes up must come down” —in that instant, I imagined the shaft piercing through the top of my skull and killing me! “Boy dies with arrow stuck in his head”, the headlines would read.

Luckily, the shaft landed 20 feet away into the soft earth of the orchard in front of me. I concluded I should never do that again.

Another time, digging a hole in my yard, I found a hollow, brass, 50-caliber, bullet casing.

How it got there, who knows? Bursting with scientific inquiry, I theorized if I could punch a hole into the end of it, thread a firecracker fuse through it, fill the chamber with the powder, jam a small marble into its end and light it —it would make one hell of a cannon! So Robert and I went over to Charlie and Raul’s place (their Dad had a vise) and, with a large nail and a hammer, we took turns pounding on the end, hoping to punch a hole in it.

Robert was last. On his third blow, there was a deafening explosion and we all screamed, as the casing flew out of the vise, ripping a bloody tear into his forefinger and thumb!

We later learned that the primer cap on the end of the casing was still live and contained the powder needed to launch the projectile. We never did that again.

I love science.

There’s also the vast array of toys and objects we “invented”, being poor kids from the barrio.

For instance, through tedious experiments, we found that the ordinary black rubber strands we used to propel rocks on our slingshots were not very elastic.

Searching through a hill of tubes behind a tire shop one day, we found a rare, red rubber tube in the pile, and to our amazement discovered that strands made from it could launch a stone three times the distance, with twice the speed as the black ones! This was great for punching out windows, porch lights, and firing on suspicious cars, from great distance without getting caught!

La Cienciología del Barrio

S

egún el Diccionario Merriam-Webster, ciencia es “el conocimiento o estudio del mundo natural basado en hechos comprobados a través de experimentación y observación.” Para mí, las Ciencias siempre ha sido un tema que me despierta la curiosidad. Las pocas clases obligatorias de ciencias que tomé en la preparatoria y la universidad me entusiasmaron bastante.

Me gustaba trajinar con los matraces y quemadores Bunsen de mi clase de biología en la secundaria, aprendiendo sobre átomos, núcleos, células, amebas, y disecar ranas, etc. ¡Qué va! ¡Incluso disequé unos cuantos caracoles, grillos, cucarachas y moscas por mi propia cuenta! Pero más que eso, me encantaba Marlene, la preciosa chica anglo que se sentaba junto a mí en la clase de biología. Ella era, de algún modo, una maravilla de la ciencia, y me pasé mucho tiempo observándola.

Creciendo en el barrio, practicábamos nuestra propia forma de ciencia. Por ejemplo un día tomé mi arco a la calle y frente a mi casa y, apuntándolo derechito al cielo, lo estiré todo lo que pude, y disparé una flecha. Para mi asombro (y horror) ¡desapareció! Me quedé paralizado. Había escuchado que todo lo que sube tiene que bajar —en ese instante imaginé la flecha perforando mi calavera ¡matándome!

“Niño muere de un flechazo en la cabeza” dirían los titulares. Afortunadamente el proyectil aterrizó a unos 20 pies, en el suave suelo de una huerta del frente. Concluí que era algo que no debía repetir jamás.

En otra ocasión, cavando un hoyo en mi patio, encontré un casquillo de bronce, calibre 50 ¿Cómo llegó ahí? Ni idea. Ardiendo de curiosidad científica, teoricé que si le hacía un hoyo por detrás, le metía una mecha, llenaba con pólvora el casquillo, en la punta le embutía una canica, y le aplicaba un cerillo a la mecha ¡qué cañonazo! periments, we found that our bows, strung with red rubber, instead of ordinary string or twine, were far superior, too. Next, we hypothesized that arrows made from the more lightweight cattails we found growing in a swampy area near the tracks might travel farther distances.

But they wobbled and drifted in the wind, so we tried tipping them with hollow, rubber tubing we found in the upholstery trim of abandoned cars. This gave weight to the tip of the arrow, sending it in an incredibly straight path to its target. This science improved the mock warfare between the rival “Oakies”, who lived in the trailer park nearby, and us.

We can easily see how Science has the capacity to improve our lives. The ultimate tragedy is that we barrio kids never received notoriety or fame for these inventions, and our scientific discoveries will remain in the shadows of history. Wait! Después está la amplia gama de juguetes y objetos que uno, como niño pobre de barrio, inventa. Por ejemplo, tras larga experimentación, deducimos que las ordinarias ligas negras que usábamos en nuestras hondas para disparar piedras no eran de las más Richard Ríos elásticas. Investigando Stockton, CA entre la montaña de cámaras de aire en la trastienda de una llantera encontramos una singular cámara roja y, para nuestro asombro, descubrimos que usando esta liga podíamos disparar una piedra tres veces más lejos y al doble de la velocidad que con ligas negras. autos sospechosos ¡y desde una distancia que garantizaba impunidad!

Experimentando un poco más encontramos que nuestros arcos, con estas gomas en lugar de cordel corriente, eran también muy superiores. Después teorizamos que si hacíamos flechas con el tallo de las totoras que crecían en un pantano cerca de la línea del tren, al ser mucho más livianas, volarían una distancia mucho mayor. Pero se bamboleaban y las desviaba el viento, de modo que probamos ensartándoles la punta en un trocito de esos tubos de goma que remataban la tapicería en autos abandonados. Esta les daba el peso a la punta de la flecha, enviándola increíblemente derechita al blanco. Esta ciencia mejoró ostensiblemente nuestra “guerra” con los oakies* que vivían en el parque de ‘trailers’ de por ahí cerca.

Así podemos ver como las Ciencias tienen la capacidad de mejorar nuestras vidas. La tragedia mayor, sin duda, es que nosotros, chicos del barrio, nunca recibimos ni fama ni reconocimiento por estas invenciones y nuestros descubrimientos científicos se mantienen oscurecidos a la historia ¡Esperen! ¿Les dije de la vez que inventé un…? Ay, pero esa es para otra historia.

aí de bruces. Por eso traigo la cara desfigurada, horrible. Pero ya estoy mejor; es solo cosa de días. Es que venía distraído, viendo al vacío.

Y yo que siempre me he burlado de la gente que va con la mirada fija a sus pantallas celulares, deseando que tropiecen y caigan de costalazo para reírme a más no poder. Me pasó a mí, sin portar un celular.

El doctor me había dicho que me iba a morir, así nomás. Perdí la concentración y el escalón que se esfumó delante de mis ojos me obligó a dar un paso en falso.

Algunos testigos me auxiliaron. Otros no aguantaron la risa y se alejaron. Después de todo era un episodio bastante jocoso para recontarlo: “El hombre cayó de hocico ¡lo hubieras visto! rebotando la cara en cada escalón hasta abajo… se levantó disimulando que estaba bien, pero la cara le quedó tan hinchada como una sandía”.

El doctor me auscultó primero el pecho y ordenaba: “Respire hondo, exhale. Respire hondo, exhale…” Iba de derecha a izquierda, subía y bajaba. Luego descendió al abdomen y después recorrió la espalda. Cada vez que ponía el estetoscopio en un punto exclamaba: “Very good, oh yes, very good, very good, excellent…” Obviamente pensé que todo estaba en orden. Sin embargo, el doctor se sacó el estetoscopio y sin un suspiro de compasión o agachar los ojos en sentido de lástima me dijo a boca de jarro: “Usted se va a morir”.

Quedé deshecho. Los análisis de sangre que ordenó para mí le revelaron lo que me decía: “Usted sufre de hipercolesterolemia, señor, clínicamente usted está muerto. O debería estarlo; no es posible que usted ande tan campante, vivo”, dijo. “Los números son inconcebibles ¡ochocientos ochenta y tres puntos! Es insólito, no me lo explico”, continuaba el doctor, “podría ser hereditario pero lo dudo. Dígame: ¿sufrían sus padres de cardiopatía, o sea, enfermedad del corazón?” “No doctor, mi madre murió de cáncer. Mi padre sufría de un hechizo que él se inventó por años. Falleció de

Others could not help laughing and just walked away. After all, it was a very amusing episode worth re-telling: “The man fell right on his face, you should’ve seen him! Bouncing down the steps. He stood up pretending nothing had happened, but his face was as big as a watermelon.”

The doctor first auscultated my chest, ordering: “Take a deep breathe, exhale, breathe, exhale…” He went from left to right, up and down. Then he descended to my abdomen and up my back. Each time he placed the stethoscope on a point he said: “Very good, oh yes, very good, very good, excellent…” Obviously, I thought everything was in order. However, when the doctor removed the stethoscope and, without a sign of compassion, he blurted it out: “You’re going to die.”

I was devastated. The blood tests he’d ordered revealed what he was telling me: “You have hypercholesterolemia, sir; clinically you’re dead. Or you should be; it’s not possible for you to be walking around, like nothing,” he said. “These numbers, eight hundred and eighty three points! It’s unheard of. I don’t know how this can be,” continued the doctor. “It could be hereditary but I doubt it. Still, tell me: did any of your parents suffer from heart decease?” “No doctor, my mother died of cancer. My father suffered many years from a self-diagnosed spell. He died from an unknown disease.”

While I was in line waiting for coffee, people looked askance at me, keeping their distance. An employee, who knew me, asked what had happened. I told her “I’m going to die.” She did not charge me for the coffee.

From then on everybody became nice to me: friends and acquaintances filled me with love and compassion. I felt like a celebrity who never pays for anything: “Come in, come in, sit here, you want some coffee?

Don’t worry, this one is on me. Here, have some pastries….” I admit that soon I became used to so much kindness. All I had to do was to show up, continued on next page MARCH 2016 Joaquín 23

and without a word, I was inundated with cordialities.

In time, people stopped being compassionate; they looked at me with suspicion. Very likely they assumed I had devised this death story to take advantage of them. Some stopped talking to me. I understood their feelings and decided to stay away for some time.

The visits to the doctor continued and he insisted I take the medicine regularly: “The numbers have come down but it’s not enough,” he warned. “You do take the medicine every day, right? Remember you should not eat lactose products, shrimp, red meat, or saturated fat. So tell me, do you feel tired, weak or do you have trouble breathing?” “No, doctor, I feel fine, I keep active just like you recommended and I only eat what I should,” I replied.

Three years later, I started to experience symptoms that kept getting worse. I was sore when I got up in the mornings, as if I had exercised when, in fact, I had not for several months. I didn’t understand why. I felt tired and I had difficulty breathing. It never occurred to me to read the ‘secondary effects’ the medicine caused. After each one, in parenthesis, it read: “these effects could be fatal.” I felt as if I had been condemned to death: the medicine was poisoning me! Furiously, I threw Manuel Camacho it in the garbage. The next San Joaquin day, the symptoms had Delta College completely vanished.

Stockton, CA During my next visit, the doctor was perplexed: “The numbers are even higher than the last time, they’re above nine hundred… What happened?” I explained to him that I’d gotten rid of the medicine and had never felt better. He got closer to me and secretly confided something that left me speechless: “You don’t need the medicine.”

Years have passed and during each visit, the doctor focuses on the numbers: “It is important to follow the ideal diet to control those numbers; we cannot let them increase to avoid some ailment; we have to monitor them until they come down within normal levels.” One day, I asked him what the numbers really meant. “How come above so many hundreds was not normal but below it is? Why do people with low cholesterol die and others with high cholesterol —like me— do not?” He shook his head. Looking directly into my eyes, he said, unequivocally: “The truth is, my friend, no one understands the numbers.”

Tome, cómase este pastelito…” Admito que pronto me acostumbré a tanta amabilidad. Ya solo era cuestión de presentarme y sin enunciar palabra me llovían cordialidades.

Con el tiempo, la gente dejó de ser compasiva; me miraban con recelo. Sospecharon que había ideado la treta de mi fallecimiento para aprovecharme. Algunos me retiraron la palabra. Entendí su disgusto y decidí ausentarme por algún tiempo.

Las visitas al doctor continuaron. Insistía que tomara la medicina puntualmente: “Los números han bajado pero no es suficiente”, alegaba. “Toma usted la pastilla diario ¿verdad? Recuerde que no debe consumir lácteos, camarones, carne de res ni grasas saturadas.

Y dígame, ¿se siente cansado, débil o tiene problemas respiratorios?” “No, doctor, me siento bien, me mantengo activo tal como recomendó y solo como lo que debo comer”, le contestaba.

Tres años después empecé a padecer algunos síntomas que fueron empeorando.

Por la mañana me levantaba adolorido como si hubiera hecho ejercicio cuando no lo había hecho por meses. No entendía por qué. Me sentía cansado y de pronto me faltaba la respiración. No se me había ocurrido leer los efectos secundarios que produce la medicina: entre los ciento y tantos efectos encontré los que me aquejaban —después de cada uno, entre paréntesis, decía: “estos efectos pueden ser fatales”. En ese momento sí que me declaré condenado a muerte ¡la medicina me estaba envenenando! Con rabia la tiré a la basura.

Al día siguiente, los síntomas desaparecieron por completo.

En mi siguiente visita, el doctor quedó perplejo: “Los números son altísimos, rebasan novecientos… ¿Pero qué ha pasado?” Le expliqué que me deshice de la medicina y que nunca me había sentido mejor. Se acercó y en secreto me confió algo que me dejo sin palabras: “Usted no necesita la medicina”.

Han pasado los años y, en cada visita, el doctor se enfoca en los números: “Es importante llevar la dieta ideal para controlar esos números; no podemos permitir que suban para evitar algún malestar; tenemos que vigilar esos números hasta que bajen a niveles normales…”

Finalmente pregunté al doctor qué significaban los números. ¿Por qué no era normal un número arriba de dos cientos y sí debajo de dos cientos? ¿Por qué una persona con bajo colesterol muere y una con números elevados como yo no? Él sacudió la cabeza. Me miró directo a los ojos y dijo inequívoco: “La verdad, mi amigo, nadie entiende los números”.

rriving home, Roman faced his mother, as Sergeant Mendoza explained what Roman was accused of. She beamed at Roman several times shaking her head in displeasure before finally speaking.

“So this is what you’ve been doing after school all this time? You told me you go to the Boy’s Club every day!” She said. “Is it true you are a thief? Thieves belong in jail; I guess that’s where you belong!” she concluded, crossing her arms.

The sergeant scooped Roman off his feet. Visibly shaken, Roman pleaded with his mother crying and reaching out then grasping the air for her as his arms and legs dangled.

“Mom! Help me! Tell him I didn’t do it! I didn’t do it! Tell him! Don’t let him take me!

Mom! Mom!” “I’m sorry son but you heard what your mother said. Perhaps you do belong in jail,” said the Sergeant heading towards the door with him. The kid tried grabbing the sofa, then the door, crying. The neighbors downstairs stood gawking through their windows.

As the car pulled away, the Sergeant began to speak. “Look son, like I said, I may be able to help you if you will just cooperate with me. I need to know why you stole so many bikes and who helped you? Where are the rest of the bicycles?” he added in a friendly tone.

Roman lifted his head. Tears continued rolling down his cheeks.

“We stole, I mean, I stole those bikes because my father wouldn’t buy me one and I couldn’t take them home. I gave the ones I could to the kids in the projects1!”

“Okay, son, take it easy, I understand.

You said ‘we’ at first, who else helped you?” asked the officer.

“I didn’t say ‘we’!” he snapped.

“Okay, son, take it easy. Will you please tell me where the rest of the bikes are? We recovered the ones you gave away but I need to know what happened to the rest,” he said, as he parked the cruiser to hear the whole story.

Esta le daba quemantes miradas y meneaba la cabeza decepcionada hasta que, por fin, habló. “¿Así que esto lo que hacías después de clases todo este tiempo? ¡Me decías que ibas al Boy’s Club todos los días!” dijo ¿Es verdad que eres un ladrón? Los ladrones deben estar en la cárcel ¡parece que es ahí donde debes estar!” concluyó, cruzándose de brazos.

El sargento levantó a Román en vilo. Aterrado, Román empezó a rogar a su madre, llorando y estirando

“The bikes nobody wanted I’d leave at the park. See those bushes along the wall? said Roman pointing. “In the first bushes are the frames, next to them are the rims and tires, then in those other ones over there are the seats and handle bars.”

“Listen, Roman, you are only nine years old and I can tell you are very smart for your age but….” A furious tapping at the squad car window interrupted him. It was Stevie. The Sergeant rolled down his window and a gush of hot Arizona heat came in. “Yes?” he asked.

El chico trataba de aferrarse al sofá, luego a la puerta, llorando. Los vecinos escaleras abajo espiaban a través de sus ventanas.

A medida que el auto se alejaba el sargento comenzó a hablar. “Mira, hijo, como dije, te podría echar una mano si me dices algo. Necesito saber ¿por qué robaste tanta bicicleta y quién te ayudó? ¿Dónde está el resto de las bicicletas?” agregó más amistosamente.

Román levantó la cara, Las lágrimas seguían corriéndole por las mejillas. “Robamos ¡no! robé esas bicicletas porque mi padre no me compraba una y no me las podía llevar a casa ¡Les di las que pude a los chicos en los projects1!”

“Está bien, hijo, cálmate, entiendo. Dijiste ‘robamos’ primero ¿Quién te ayudó?” preguntó el agente. “¡No dije ‘robamos’!” reclamó.

“Está bien, hijo, cálmate.

Por favor, dime ¿Dónde está el resto de las bicicletas? Recuperamos las que regalaste pero necesito saber qué pasó con el resto,” dijo mientras se estacionaba para escuchar el resto de la historia.

“Las bicicletas que nadie quería las dejaba en el parque ¿Ve esas matas pegados a la pared? dijo Román apuntando, “en los primeras están los marcos, después están las ruedas y llantas, y en esas otras allá están los asientos y los manubrios.”

“Escucha, Román, tienes solo nueve años y veo que eres muy inteligente para tu edad, pero…” Un frenético golpeteo en la ventana de la patrullera le interrumpió. Era Stevie. El sargento bajo el vidrio y entró una soplo de aire caliente arizoniano. ¿Sí? preguntó. “¡Me llamo Stevie Vickers! ¡Yo robé todas esas bicicletas de entre las matas! ¡Román no fue! ¡Yo fui! ¡Yo le di las bicicletas! I gave him the bikes! There’s more frames, tires, rims and handlebars over there! Roman would go with me sometimes but he didn’t steal them! I did!” he spoke hurriedly, as he was afraid to think and repent. “Roman is a good kid; he shines shoes, goes to school and has a good heart. I stole everything! I showed him how to steal and shoplift but he’s not very good at it.”

Roman was stunned. “What are you doing, man?” he pleaded.

“Hey man, you’re too young to be in juvi2; you’re going to get beat up and who knows what else! You’re too smart and read a lot!

I wish I could read so I could tell those Tom Sawyer stories. You have a chance! I don’t!

I’ll probably follow my daddy to prison; I ain’t seen him in so long! Plus, all my friends are in juvi right now, I don’t want to be out here. I’d rather be in there with them! I don’t care! I’ll eat better in there and working out I’ll come out stronger!” He said flexing.

Then, as if talking to himself, Stevie added, “I’m tired of living in the projects, but you! I’ve been in jail most of my life! You don’t stand a chance!”

“Listen to him, Roman, he’s older than you and going to jail again,” said the Sergeant, “Like he said, he doesn’t care anymore. Do you want to follow his footsteps?” he asked.

“No sir, I don’t want to go to jail.”

“Well. Let me tell you young man: if I ever hear your name for any crime, I guarantee you I will be at your doorstep!” With that, the sergeant drove Roman back home where they found his mother crying. From the back seat of the squad car Stevie winked at Roman —as always did, his way of saying everything was alright. Roman’s eyes watered as the car door closed and the car pulled away.

That summer, Roman’s family moved to Stockton, California. Roman gladly assumed a new found attitude, never again to find things before they got lost. As he waited at the bus station with his parents, he thought of Stevie. He brushed his fingers through his Mohawk haircut, just like Stevie used to.

Seguro termino en la pinta como mi Stockton, CA papá ¡no lo he visto en tanto tiempo! ¡Ya qué! Todos mis amigos están en juvi ya, no quiero estar aquí afuera… ¡mejor voy donde están ellos! ¡No importa! Ahí se come mejor y si hago ejercicio voy a salir lleno de músculos,” dijo flexionando los brazos.

Luego, y como si hablase para sí, añadió, “ya estoy hasta el gorro de los projects, ‘ca ¡¿pero tú?! He estado en el bote casi toda mi vida… ¡Tú no duras ahí un día!

“Escúchalo, Román, él es mayor que tú y va a ir a la cárcel de nuevo,” dijo el sargento, “como dijo, a él ya no le importa ¿Quieres hacer tú lo mismo? Preguntó.

“No señor. Yo no quiero ir a la cárcel”.

“Bien, jovencito, te advierto: si yo escucho tu nombre enredado en cualquier delito por ahí ¡me vas a tener de nuevo en frente!” Dicho eso, el sargento llevó a Román de regreso a casa donde su madre lloraba. Desde el asiento trasero de la patrullera, Stevie le guiñó un ojo —como siempre lo hacía para indicarle que todo estaba bien. A Román se le humedecieron los ojos cuando se cerró la puerta y de alejó la patrulla.

Ese verano la familia de Román se mudó a Stockton, California. De muy buena gana, el muchacho asumió una nueva actitud, se había salvado, ya nunca halló cosas antes que se perdieran. Mientras esperaba con sus padres en el terminal de autobuses se acordó de Stevie.

Se pasó la mano por su corte mohicano, como lo hacía Stevie.

De hecho, algunos prominentes economistas sienten que esto puede también ser un importante factor en la lenta recuperación y tasa de crecimiento económico.

Segundo, recortes en el gasto gubernamental han, de hecho, creado una barrera a la innovación. Las reducciones en el presupuesto para la Oficina de Patentes de los EEUU están directamente ligadas al promedio de espera y costo de obtener una patente en los EEUU. Desde que la Revolución Republicana comenzó a recortar fondos en los 1990s, el tiempo necesario para inscribir una patente ha aumentado de 18,3 a 35,3 meses. En el ínterin, y por primera vez desde el Siglo XIX, los EEUU han sido sobrepasados por otros países en producir patentes e innovaciones tecnológicas.

Tercero, Brookings sugiere que la escasez de estudiantes en áreas STEM y la baja calidad de cursos STEM en la educación pública de kínder a 12º grado puede ser el problema más serio al largo plazo. El informe denota que solo el 15% de los estudiantes estadounidenses se especializan en cursos STEM mientras que en los países que nos sobrepasan, como Corea, un 30% del estudiantado se instruye y emplea en esas áreas. En el 2012 el Consejo Presidencial de Asesores en Ciencia y Tecnología calculó que los EEUU necesitaba generar un millón de nuevos profesionales STEM anuales, pero las universidades están produciendo menos del 35% de los que necesitamos. Claramente, esto ayuda a explicar por qué estamos extendiendo más de 200 mil visas HIB anuales a profesionales extranjeros para que vengan y ocupen puestos STEM en los EEUU, aunque todavía se está aún lejos de suplir la necesidad.

Entonces ¿cuál es la clave para revertir esta tendencia? Un informe del Centro de Investigaciones Pew enfatiza: mejorar la calidad y el respaldo a la educación de las ciencias en las escuelas públicas. En una encuesta de miembros de la Asociación Estadounidense para el Avance Científico publicada por el Pew el año pasado, solo el 16% de los científicos nacionales ubica la educación STEM de los EEUU entre las mejores o superiores al promedio en el mundo —el 46% la catalogó como inferior al promedio. ¿Y qué tienen que ver los latinos en todo esto? Los latinos constituyen la mayoría de los estudiantes de kínder a 12º grado en California, y la proporción de la población crece en todo el país. Si Trump (o cualquiera de los otros candidatos) va a hacer a los EEUU grande nuevamente en ciencias e innovación, tendrá que ser en gran parte a través de nuestras familias y vecinos latinos. Así y todo solo el 7% de nuestra fuerza laboral STEM es latina. En vez

de verbalizar políticas que crean desconfianza y animosidad entre los latinos ¿No debiésemos estar haciendo lo contrario y motivarlos?

También debemos preguntarnos quién es responsable por la tan pequeña proporción de latinos interesados o preparándose a entrar en áreas STEM. Como muchas veces antes, Pogo aún tiene razón “hemos hallado al enemigo y somos nosotros.” Vean lo que pasa hoy con los latinos en nuestras escuelas: estudios a nivel nacional muestran que la mayoría de los latinos recién entrados (57%) comienzan la secundaria expresando su interés en carreras y estudios avanzados en áreas STEM pero, para cuando llegan al último año, solo el 28% tienen aún interés, Y, después de empezar a trabajar en titularse en nuestras universidades, solo el 16% son latinos —comparados al 25% caucásico— sacan su diploma. Sin duda, esta merma de latinos es una de las mayores razones por las que hay tan pocos en las áreas STEM. Por otro lado ¿A qué se debe que los las carreras más populares entre los estudiantes latinos sean las ciencias sociales, negocios, psicología y educación, especialmente cuando esos oficios pagan mucho menos que los empleos STEM? Todas estas son áreas con un gran número de facultativos latinos y sistemas de respaldo —incluyendo una mayor asistencia económica y oportunidad de empleo mientras se estudia. Además del bien-documentado bajo nivel de las secundarias en las que estudian los latinos, especialmente en las áreas STEM, el tipo de oportunidades en áreas STEM para ellos, a medida que avanzan, pareciera también estar en su contra.

Por supuesto, la razón más común por la que los latinos no terminan sus carreras es bien conocida: presión económica. En un exhaustivo estudio sobre la disparidad en el número de latinos que entran en el campo de la salud, dos investigadores de la Universidad de Maryland no pudieron hallar variables de competencia vinculadas a aculturación o cultura, “…pero si hallaron que las determinantes económicas y sociales son más importantes que la cultura,”1 Entonces ¿Qué ocurre si se eliminan las presiones económicas y el ambiente institucional es favorable al desarrollo del latino? Los resultados es lo que hoy pasa en la Universidad Internacional de Florida (FIU) en Miami, la que lidera a la nación en títulos profesionales y doctorados hispanos en carreras STEM.2 Apenas la mitad de los estudiantes son latinos y estos, en lugar de alejarse de las áreas STEM, más bien se agrupan hacia ellas. Los latinos comprenden el 68% de los primeros títulos en ciencias biológicas y biomédicas, 63% en ingeniería, 72% en física, 62% en computación, y 91% en matemáticas. Lo que hace especial-

mente diferente a la FIU son los programas de mentores que su presidente, Mark B. Rosenberg, ha hecho que cada departamento instituya, como también la oportunidad de internados remunerados en estas carreras.3 California tiene también un número de universidades e instituciones de educación superior que son bastante abiertas a los latinos, incluyendo a la Universidad Estatal en Stanislaus —la que, de hecho, se ubica en el 25º en la nación. No obstante, solo tres de las 14 primeras, La Universidades de California (UC) en Riverside y Merced, y el Cali Poly en Pomona enfatizan carreras STEM como lo hace FIU. Y la UC Merced, la única en nuestro inmenso valle central, es también una de las más pequeñas en la lista.

Tal vez la varita mágica de Donald Trump puede hacer grande a los EEUU de nuevo, o tal vez debiésemos recordar cómo una vez nos hicimos grandes ofreciendo la misma calidad de oportunidades en las áreas STEM que alguna vez ofrecimos a una nueva generación de estudiantes… que esta vez pasa que son mayoritariamente latinos.

El día de Año Nuevo (2016), me paré bajo la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en la Basílica de Ciudad de México. Podía escuchar el eco de las palabras de consagración en la misa en honor de la Madre de Dios: “Tomen y coman… este es mi cuerpo; tomen y beban, esta es mi sangre…” parecía que Olivia estaba allí, al lado de la Virgen, repitiendo esas palabras desde el Cielo. De hecho eso lo había vivido aquí en la Tierra.

Al retornar desde Ciudad de México el 17 de febrero, el Papa Francisco se dirigía a los encarcelados en Ciudad Juárez.

Aquí hay solo unas pocas palabras que dirigió al mundo: “La misericordia divina nos recuerda que las cárceles son un síntoma de cómo estamos como sociedad, son un síntoma en muchos casos de silencios y omisiones que han provocado una cultura de descarte. Son un síntoma de una cultura que ha dejado de apostar por la vida; de una sociedad que ha ido abandonando a sus hijos.”

El Santo Padre estaba también hablando a Mónica, Olivia y a la Madre Antonia. Concluyo pidiendo a estas mujeres en el cielo rueguen por cada uno de nosotros, a quienes nos importa la dignidad humana y por aquellos quienes dedican su vida al servicio de los demás.

No es conicnidencia que las mujeres que recordamos hoy —incluyendo a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe— eran todas madres. En el Cielo, hay madres devotas por la eternidad.
