only a handful of people, and should not be so celebrated. Rather, we should be asking why the effort is so puny.

Would the use of match sticks or Leggos to build the Golden Gate Bridge, or teaspoons to dig the Panama Canal, be worthy of front page coverage? Granted, any improvement of a child’s educational prospects is significant, but here is where the failure to engage in public discourse is also potentially most damaging. When a problem of such proportions and significance is at stake, an overly celebratory reaction may be counter-productive.

For more than two decades now, our schools and colleges and supporting community organizations have undertaken scores of mostly worthwhile programs, like this Head Start initiative, to address the dropout problem. Yet, whether we are talking about undertakings at University of the Pacific, or San Joaquin Delta College, or our local school districts or those sponsored by the state and federal government, the magnitude of the efforts have not been proportional to the magnitude of the problem. The result is that the problem has worsened and become entrenched and conflated with poverty, discrimination, shortcomings in immigrant assimilation, unemployment and other social problems, ranging from violence and criminality, to access to health care and social services. Meanwhile, we sit by wondering why Forbes magazine calls Stockton the most miserable big city in America.

The failure to recognize how intricately connected educational achievement is to the rest of our civic, social and economic well-being, is the crux of the matter. Improving the educational experience is not just important for Latinos, either. The needs among Latinos are a bit more acute and that should help us realize just how importantthe building of a more inclusive and vibrant society is.

Cuando está en juego un problema de semejantes proporciones y significado para el acceso a las oportunidades y la prosperidad de toda una comunidad, una celebración exagerada puede causar que se oculte lo poco efectiva que dicha iniciativa sea para enfrentar el problema.

Por ya más de dos décadas nuestras escuelas, universidades y organizaciones comunitarias han probado cantidades de —en su mayoría—programas que valen la pena, como esta iniciativa HeadStart, para enfrentar el problema de la deserción escolar. Sin embargo, sea el esfuerzo por la Universidad del Pacífico, San Joaquin Delta College, nuestros distritos escolares o aquellos auspiciados por los gobiernos estatales o federales, ninguno ha sido proporcional a la magnitud del problema. Al final el problema se ha empeorado, enraizado y fusionado con la pobreza, discriminación, deficiencia en la asimilación inmigrante, desempleo y otras trabas sociales que van de la violencia y el crimen, al acceso a servicios médicos y sociales. En el ínterin nos preguntamos cómo es posible que Forbes catalogue a Stockton como la más miserable ciudad importante en los EEUU. El negarse a reconocer cuan interconectado está el rendimiento educacional al resto de nuestro bienestar social y económico es la clave del tema. El mejorar la experiencia educacional no es importante sólo para los latinos pero como la necesidad entre éstos es un poco más acentuada ello debería ayudar a que todos entendieran cuán importante es este factor en la calidad de la sociedad que estamos construyendo hoy en este lugar.

Mediocrity: The New Excellence?

A student of mine once told me this story. Her teen daughter, a student in Middle School, was handed a note by her teacher from the principal’s office announcing that she had been selected as one of the school’s outstanding students. An award would be presented at an upcoming assembly.

When the word of her achievement spread among her peers, instead of congratulatory responses, she was made fun of. “Look at Myra; she thinks she’s so smar t.” “She’s a smart y pants!” “She thinks she’s better than the rest of us!”

Things turned even uglier, a couple of days later, when was approached by a couple of Cholas (tough girls), who threatened “If you show up to the assembly, we are going to kick your butt, homegirl.” Myra shuddered but did not respond. She went home, shut herself up in her room, and didn’t utter a word of it to her mom.

On the day of the assembly, Myra was late getting out of bed. “Come on mija”, prodded her mom, “you’re late for school!” “I don’t feel well today, mama, I think I’m getting the flu”, Myra shouted through the closed door. “Ok mija”, stay in bed and take care of yourself; I’m late for work. I’ll see you tonight.” Sometime later, the school contacted Myra’s mother about her daughter’s unexplained absence on the day of the assembly. The award arrived in the mail the next day, inside an envelope.

The story shook, but did not surprise me. Peer pressure to fail, to be stupid, to be mediocre, to be a pendejo is rampant among our kids today. “All I want from life is a C”, is the debilitating mentality. The student who studies, the one who gets good grades, who succeeds in school is often bullied and ridiculed by his peers. There are few things worse than being labeled “teacher’s pet.”

Students gather in groups when they receive their graded assignments. “You got an F? Me too!!” They cheer each other on, excitedly.

The few with the A or B papers, even dread telling it to others, fearing the response, “An A?? What did you do, kiss the teacher’s butt!?”

The greater tragedy is that their parents, sometimes their teachers, even the greater society, languishes in this kind of mediocrity. The term derives from the Latin “mediocris: to be in ‘a middle state’.” We don’t want to stand out, to be seen as different from others. Tragically, to be smarter-or more intelligent-to be educatedoften becomes a life sentence to separateness.

We need only to look at the long history of great people, thinkers, philosophers, artists to witness the tragic and lonely lives they lived. There is a price tag for success.

Mediocridad: ¿La Nueva Meta?

Una vez una de mis estudiantes me contó lo siguiente: La maestra de su hija adolescente, estudiante de Escuela Intermedia, le entregó una nota de la dirección en la que se le informaba que había seleccionada como uno de los estudiantes sobresalientes. Se le iba a entregar un diploma en la asamblea próxima.

Cuando se corrió la voz entre sus compañeros, en lugar de recibir felicitaciones, recibió burlas. “Miren a Myra; se cree tan inteligente”. “¡Toda una cerebrito!” “¡Cree que es mejor que todos!”

Las cosas empeoraron cuando un par de días más tarde la abordaron dos Cholas (niñas abusivas) quienes la amenazaron “Si te apareces a la asamblea te vamos a dar una madriza, homegirl” Myra se estremeció pero no les contestó. Se fue a casa, se encerró en su cuarto y no le dijo una palabra del asunto a su mamá.

El día de la asamblea Myra no se levantaba. “Vamos m’ija” apuraba su madre, “¡vas a llegar tarde a clases!” “No me siento muy bien, mamá, creo que tengo gripe” gritó Myra tras la puerta cerrada.

“OK, m’ija, quédate en cama y cuídate; estoy atrasada para el trabajo. Te veo esta noche” Poco más tarde la escuela se comunicó con la madre sobre la ausencia injustificada de Myra el día de la asamblea.

El diploma llegó por correo al día siguiente, dentro de un sobre.

La historia me estremeció pero no me sorprendió. La presión de grupo para fracasar, ser estúpido, mediocre, ser un pendejo abunda entre nuestros niños hoy en día. “Todo lo que pido es una ‘C’” es una triste mentalidad. Aquel que estudia, el que obtiene buenas calificaciones, que triunfa en la escuela es muchas veces rechazado y ridiculizado por sus compañeros. Hay pocas cosas peores que ser llamado “barbero del maestro” Los estudiantes se agrupan cuando dan las calificaciones de las tareas. “¿Sacaste una F? ¡¡Yo también!!” Se celebran con entusiasmo.

Los pocos que logran una A o una B ni siquiera se atreven a decirle a los demás, temiendo que les digan, “¡¿Una A? ¿Qué? ¿Le hiciste la barba a la maestra?!”

La gran tragedia es que sus padres, a veces sus maestros, incluso toda la sociedad, aceptan este tipo de mediocridad. El término deriva del latín “mediocris: estar en un ‘estado intermedio’” No queremos destacarnos, ser diferente a los demás. Trágicamente, muchas veces el ser más inteligente o más educado es una sentencia de separación perpetua.

No tenemos sino que mirar a la larga lista de grandes personajes, pensadores, filósofos, artistas, para darnos cuenta de las trágicas y solitarias vidas que llevaron. El triunfo tiene su precio.

Estrategia para Comunidades Autosostenibles llega a San Joaquín

S

e avecinan cambios al medioambiente del Condado San Joaquín, cambios para mejor, gracias a la SB375 (propuesta de ley 375 del Senado Estatal) aprobada en el 2008.

La SB 375 mejor conocida como Estrategia de Comunidades Autosostenibles, busca reducir a niveles previos las emanaciones de efecto invernadero —contaminantes resultado de quemar fósiles combustibles como la gasolina— por medio de un proceso gradual: 5 por ciento para el 2020 y 10 por ciento para el 2035.

Los efectos asociados con la SB375 tienen positivas implicaciones para Stockton y todo el Valle del San Joaquín. Según protecciones de ClimatePlan —una colaboración de docenas de organizaciones californianas dedicadas a la planificación urbana estudiada— para el 2050 la población del Valle San Joaquín se habrá doblado, convirtiéndose en la residencia de 9 a 12 millones de personas.

El Centro de Transporte Sostenible de la UC Davis remarcó que este ritmo de crecimiento “sobrepasa cualquier otra región en California, los EEUU, e incluso México” El aumento de la población se traduce en mayor tránsito vehicular —importante factor en el efecto invernadero y el aumento en la contaminación ambiental.

Los residentes del Condado San Joaquín deberían estar preocupados: se ha nombrado al Valle Central como una de las regiones con el aire más contaminado en el estado. Eso ha llevado a un crecimiento en los niveles de asma infantil, particularmente en el Condado San Joaquín.

La Iniciativa de Comunidades Autosostenibles busca integrar las políticas de transporte, uso de suelo y vivienda para reducir el nivel de las emisiones que causan el efecto invernadero y fomentar un medioambiente más sano y sostenible.

En mayo del 2012, Caridades Católicas, parte de la Diócesis de Stockton, comenzó a trabajar con una coalición de grupos locales de planeación, salud, e imparcialidad medio6 Joaquín JANUARY 2013

Sustainable Communities Strategy arrives to San Joaquin

h a nge s m ay be coming to the health of San Joaquin County, changes for the better, thanks to the implementation of Senate Bill 375, passed in 2008.

SB 375, also known Kristine Williams as the Sustainable Valley Springs, CA Communities Strategy, seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – pollutants that are the result of burning fossil fuels, such as gasoline – to previous levels in a staged process: 5 percent reductions by 2020 and 10 percent reductions by 2035.

The fallout associated with SB 375 has positive implications for Stockton and the greater San Joaquin Valley. According to ClimatePlan – a partnership of dozens of California organizations committed to intelligent urban planning practices – by 2050 San Joaquin Valley’s population will have doubled, becoming home to between 9 to 12 million residents.

The UC Davis Sustainable Transportation

Center noted that this rate of growth “outstrips any other region in California, the United States and even Mexico.”

Increased population translates to increased vehicle use – a major contributor to the greenhouse effect and increased air pollution.

Residents in San Joaquin County should be concerned; the Central Valley is often cited as one of the most highly polluted regions in the state regarding air quality. This has led to rapidly increasing levels of childhood asthma, particularly in San Joaquin County.

The Sustainable Communities Initiative looks to integrate transportation, land-use and housing policies to achieve the greenhouse gas reduction rates and foster a healthier, more sustainable living environment.

In May 2012, Catholic Charities in the Stockton Diocese began working with a coalition of local planning, health and environmental justice groups to make sure traditionally underrepresented groups – Latinos among them – would be included in the Sustainable Community Strategies dialogue.

According to the San Joaquin Council of Governments (another key player in developing

and implementing SB 375), “Everyone needs to be part of this planning process. The general public, nonprofits, elected officials, the private sector and special interest groups should be engaged in all portions of the SCS process.”

To that end, Catholic Charities has taken the initial step in connecting local underrepresented groups – serious stakeholders in terms of environmental justice issues and therefore explicitly linked to any policy implemented

by SB 375.

Though SB 375 was passed in 2008, conversation in Stockton and San Joaquin County is just beginning to heat up. Community organizations and institutions will be looking for public input regarding what sort of changes should be made to our cities and towns that will benefit the public (increased public transit opportunities, structuring development so that employment centers are within reasonable distance from residential developments and transit hubs, etc.)

Aunque la SB375 fue aprobada en el 2008,

el tema en Stockton y el Condado San Joaquín ha recién empezado a cobrar importancia. Las instituciones y organizaciones comunitarias comenzarán a sondear la opinión pública sobre qué tipo de cambios deberían hacerse a nuestras ciudades y pueblos para beneficiar sus habitantes (mayor variedad de tránsito colectivo, desarrollo estructural que resulte en que los centros de empleo se ubiquen a una distancia razonable de complejos residenciales y centros de transporte público, etc.)

riado bajo el sol de Arizona y veranos en México, Rodolfo “Rudy” García es uno de los co-fundadores de Artistas del Valle y del Mexican Heritage Center (Centro del Patrimonio Mexicano) de este condado. La permanencia de García en Stockton no solo enriqueció el ambiente artístico-latino local sino que también fomentó el cambio social de un sistema educacional arraigadamente racista.

García conoció el arte gracias a un maestro mexicano de su secundaria, viajó por el Sudoeste, México y Sudamérica, obtuvo una Maestría en Educación del Arte y finalmente se estableció en Stockton en 1965, enseñando en las preparatorias Stockton, Edison, Franklin y luego Delta College, presentando diversidad cultural y develando la descarada discriminación en las salas de clase.

Ahora jubilado y alejado de los círculos comunitarios, Joaquín le preguntó, J: Sobre las artes visuales ya sabemos, pero ¿cómo llega la poesía?

RG: Cuando era un chavalito podía memorizar y recitar largos poemas. Mi padre se juntaba con sus amigos y unas cuantas cervezas y me hacía recitarles. Más tarde mis maestros descubrieron este don y me comisionaban poemas para aprendérmelos y recitarlos en las funciones escolares. Pero fue mi Tía Margarita García-Howard quien más me inspiró: ella hacía teatro y poesía… siempre y todo en español.

J: ¿Cómo un artista se convierte en activista?

RG: En los Cuerpos de Paz estaba a cargo de crear programas culturales para chavitos ecuatorianos de lo más pobre que hay. Los hicimos y, de regreso en Phoenix, los hicimos para la Urban League —una organización afroamericana a nivel nacional.

J: ¿Cómo terminó en Stockton?

RG: Por causalidad. Mientras trabajaba en los Cuerpos de Paz conocí a un estadounidense, nos hicimos amigos y me dijo, “Cuando sea estés en California, ubícame”. Lo localicé y me consiguió un empleo enseñando arte en la Preparatoria Stockton. En aquellos días el

SUSD tenía un asombrosamente rico programa de arte… tanto para los maestros como para los estudiantes.

J: ¿Cómo era el SUSD por 1965?

RG: El racismo era velado. No siempre, pero la disparidad en la enseñanza y el maltrato de los mexicoamericanos era prevalente.

Los mexicanos eran los que estaban peor. Decir que había orientadores en la Prepa Stockton que no tenían sensibilidad es poco. Pero yo era nuevo. Tenía que callarme la boca.

J: ¿Cuándo se decide a intervenir o hacer algo? ¿Cómo?

RG: Primero empecé a quejarme con el director de la Preparatoria; le decía “está pasando esto y esto…” al punto que cuando me veía caminando hacia él en algún pasillo me cortaba y me decía “¿Y qué es lo que pasa esta vez? Nunca se hizo algo. Cuando cambiaron a ese director me puse a trabajar. Organicé un club para que los chicos crearan “arte”.

Uno de los proyectos fue crear paliacates para la cabeza —que se pusieron de moda en el tiempo de los hippies— con diseños y palabras serigrafiadas como “Poder Oakie”… eso pronto dio pie a “Poder Negro” y “Poder Cobrizo”. Después planeé un curso titulado Culturas Comparativas y se lo presenté al director. Me llevé estudiantes caucásicos a escuelas predominantemente afroamericanas o latinas y viceversa ¡Imagínense que experiencia fue para ellos! Organicé los primeros clubes MEChA de secundaria en el condado, en Edison y Franklin. Estuve adiestrando maestros en cómo hablar español y entender la idiosincrasia hispana para que recibieran sus credenciales bilingües.

J: ¿Se le unió alguien? ¿Le respaldaron? ¿Dónde estaban los otros maestros mexicoamericanos?

RG: Había muy pocos maestros latinos y la mayoría no quería hacerse notar. Solidarizaron conmigo una blanca y un negro: (la maestra de educación especial) Margaret Hamilton y (el orientador de la Preparatoria Edison) Benjamín Reddish ¿Latinos? Me acuerdo de Raoul Mora y Connie Martínez. Más tarde (el entonces-maestro de continúa en pág. 10

aised under the Arizona sun and Mexican summers, Rodolfo “Rudy” García is one of the cofounders of Artistas del Valle and this County’s Mexican Heritage Center. García’s Stockton experience not only enriched the 1960’s local Latino art scene but also spearheaded social changes within an educational system replete with discriminatory overtones.

García was introduced to the visual arts by a high school Mexican art teacher. Before settling in Stockton in 1965, where he taught Spanish and Art at Stockton High School, Edison, Franklin and Delta College, he traveled through the Southwest, Mexico and South America and completed a Masters of Art Degree in Education. The trajectory of his work has always been to teach cultural awareness.

Now retired and away from the scene, Joaquín asked him, J: We know where your love of visual arts came from, but what about your passion for poetry?

RG: When I was little I could remember and recite lengthy poems. My father would get together with his friends, and after a few cervezas, would have me recite poems for his guests. My teachers soon found out about my gift and commissioned poems for me to memorize and recite at school events. But it was mi Tía Margarita García-Howard who influenced me the most: she did plays and poetry, always in Spanish.

J: How does an artist becomes an activist?

RG: In the Peace Corps, I was in charge of creating cultural programs for poor Ecuadorian kids in the worst social conditions. Back in Phoenix, we did this for the Urban League —a national African American organization.

J: How did you end up in Stockton?

RG: By accident. I met an American while in the Peace Corps, and we became friends.

He said, “Whenever you are in California look me up.” So I took his advice and looked him up, and was able to get me a job teaching art at Stockton High. In those days SUSD had an amazingly rich art program, both for teachers and for students.

J: How was the SUSD back in 1965?

RG: Racism was thinly veiled, and inequality in the number of Latinos on the staff; ill-treatment of Mexican- American and Mexican students was prevalent. There were counselors at Stockton High who were insensitive, to say the least. I was new; I had to keep my mouth shut.

J: How did you decide to intervene?

RG: First, I started complaining to the High School Principal; I would tell him “this and this is happening.” My objections became so frequent that the principal would see me approaching him in the hallway and before I would start to speak, he would say—in a rather annoyed way, “So what is it now, Garcia? Obviously, I go not nowhere under his leadership. When a new principal came on board, I got to work. I sponsored a club so st udents to create “art.” One of the projects was to create headbands —typical of the hippie culture— with designs and words like “Okie Power” silkscreened on them. This project opened the door for “Black Power ” a nd “Brown Po w e r ”, s o o n af ter.

veloped a course entitled “Comparable Cultures,” which I presented to the Principal. I took Caucasian kids to predominately Black or Hispanic schools and vice- versa. What an experience for them! I also organized the first high school MEChA clubs in the County, at Edison and Franklin. I was teaching teachers not only how to speak Spanish and but also how to understand Hispanic culture in preparation for their bilingual credentials.

J: Did you get anyone to join or support you? Were there other Latino teachers?

RG: There were very few Latino teachers and most were reluctant to raise their voice. I got sympathy from a white and a black, a Special Education Teacher, Margaret Hamilton, and Edison High School Counselor, Benjamin Reddish. Other Latinos I who became involved were Raoul Mora and Connie Martínez.

At a later date, an Edison teacher, Andy Torres, and I organized the first Latino Graduation in the County —in a downtown basement, with a turntable, some records, punch and cake we celebrated ten Edison graduates.

J: What good came of it?

started as interns, ended up as full-time, activist-educators. There are more, of course.

I remember that the San Joaquin County Mexican-American Educators Association rose to forefront of the Latino students struggle. That group, by the way, should be revived!

J: Were there many Latino or Chicano artists at that time?

RG: Times were much different; a closed society would not understand the Chicano artist’s point of view, and openly reject it.

J: What Is Art? What Is Chicano Art? RG: Art is the expression of the soul seen through a person’s eyes. Chicano Art is an expression based on the experiences of artists who grow up living in two cultures: Mexican and American.

J: Before the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, what were Latino/Chicano Artists preoccupied with?

RG: Barely being recognized; just surviving in the US. J: Today, are these artists trying to be Diego Riveras? Is there a Central Valley Latino or Chicano Style of Art, or a Bay Area Style of Art? RG: Local art is composed, usually, of political experiences through Chicano eyes.

Rivera’s influence is that he took art from the canvas and threw it to the walls for the people to see it and own it. Many Latino or Chicano artists also want to paint of their people’s life, experiences and ongoing social and political struggle, and that’s where Rivera comes into

play. These artists seek to change minds, to sensitize the viewers to what is going on around them which affects them.

J: Would you say that Chicano Art is well received or understood?

RG: There are very few arts festivals in Stockton in general. The public is not educated about Chicano art. Luckily, young artists are striving to make themselves known to our community.

J: Is there a Latino or Chicano Arts leadership in San Joaquin County?

RG: Not that I know of. I was trying in my time, when I had time and energy. I hounded artists to join our group, Artistas del Valle. I am not aware of that happening right now but, since art continues to happen in spite of the social conditions, I suppose that leadership is not that necessary. Things are hopeful because there is a group of artists working within the Mexican Heritage Center.

J: How would you summarize the past, present and future of the Mexican Heritage Center?

RG: Artistas del Valle was the soul of the MHC, which began as a venue with which to exhibit the work of these talented local artists.

At the time, it filled a great need. Primarily, it provided an educational and artistic venue for those of Mexican resident -- later for the Latino in general. People like Raoul Mora, Richard Rios), and myself were teaching about our culture. Today there’s a void. It seems that those who remain are too old and the new ones -- do they have the knowledge, the experience?

I don’t know.

J: What should be the goal of Chicano

or Latino artists?

RG: The aim now should be to keep this art movement alive for the younger generation, for them to understand who and what they are, and where they come from -- Mexico has gave them the icons and their colors; now they should apply them to the issues they confront in modern society.

J: ¿Cómo era el ambiente artístico latino en aquellos tiempos?

RG: Muy diferente. Una sociedad cerrada que no entendía el punto de vista del artista chicano… lo rechazaban.

J: ¿Qué es arte? ¿Qué es arte latino?

RG: Arte es la expresión del alma visto por los ojos de una persona. El arte latino es una expresión basada en experiencias, en este

caso experiencias propias de los latinos.

J: Antes del Movimiento de los Derechos Civiles de los 1960s ¿En qué se centraba el arte latino?

RG: Apenas a ser reconocido… y sobrevivir en los EEUU. J: Los artistas latinos de hoy en el Condado San Joaquín ¿Están tratando de ser Diego Rivera? ¿Área de la Bahía? ¿Hay un Arte Latino del Valle?

RG: El arte local latino se compone, mayoritariamente, de experiencias políticas a través de ojos chicanos. La influencia de Rivera es que éste tomó arte desde el lienzo y lo lanzó a las paredes para que la gente lo viera y se lo apropiara. (Muchos) artistas latinos quieren presentar la vida, experiencias y luchas de su gente y es allí donde Rivera tiene su lugar.

El arte latino busca cambiar percepciones… sensibilizar al observador con su obra.

J: La promoción del Arte Latino a) Está en las manos de unos pocos, b) Es una lucha imposible, c) Está en su apogeo ¿Por qué?

RG: a) Hay demasiado pocos festivales artísticos en Stockton, en general. El público no está educado en arte chicano. Afortunadamente hay artistas jóvenes que siguen saliendo y tratando.

J: Hay liderazgo artístico en San Joaquín?

RG: No que yo sepa. Yo traté en mis tiempos, cuando tenía el tiempo y la energía. Perseguía a los artistas para que se nos unieran. No veo que eso siga pasando en estos días pero, como se sigue haciendo arte, imagino que ese liderazgo no es tan importante. Hay esperanzas porque hay un grupo de artistas jóvenes trabajando en el Mexican Heritage Center.

J: ¿Cómo resumiría el comienzo, pasado, presente y futuro del Mexican Heritage Center?

RG: Los Artistas del Valle eran el alma, el Centro las paredes donde plasmar esas almas.

En su tiempo solventó una necesidad muy importante. Ofreció un espacio educacional y artístico para el residente mexicano, primero, y más tarde para el latino. Gente como Raoul (Mora), Richard (Rios) y yo enseñábamos la cultura. Hoy hay un vacío, pareciera que quienes quedan o están muy viejos y los nuevos… ¿tienen ese conocimiento? ¿las experiencias?

No lo sé.

J: ¿Cuál es el futuro del Arte Latino en el Condado?

RG: Debería ser mantenerlo vivo para las nuevas generaciones, para que entiendan dónde están y de dónde vienen… pero no sólo para que pinten su propio pasado, sino para que se ocupen de todas las cosas que forman este mundo. México les dio los íconos y los colores, ahora deberían usar esos íconos y colores para hablar de los problemas de hoy.

Songs From The Barrio A COMING OF AGE IN MODESTO, CA

I

t was Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at the Mexican Heritage Center in downtown Stockton, an institution where Teacher, Poet, Writer and highly respected community leader Richard Rios, a founding member of Los Artistas del Valle, had spent the last 25 years, or más, creating.

On this cold evening, people from Stockton, Tracy, Modesto, and nearby cities had come to join, a standing room only audience, to listen to Rios read from his long awaited book: Songs From The Barrio, A Coming of Age in Modesto, Ca. They were not disappointed!

Rios, in his quiet and respectful manner began the evenings reading by sharing with the audience a little of his personal life, the rest was to come out in his short stories and poems.

“Songs” immediately gets into Rios’ family and the real life experiences that draw us in as we intimately relate to the pain and pleasure of growing up in el barrio. In the opening poem to the book, “Family Portrait”, he writes of his mother: Guadalupe, who married at fifteen and had her first child at sixteen, who knew poverty and the ravages of the Mexican Revolution intimately, who pressured my father to leave Mexico to the U.S. so she could better the lives of her children.”

In this short passage the stage is set for a life of challenges, battles to be fought and won. We also began to feel the enormous love and respect that Rios has for his mother, who to this day is the most important woman Richard Soto in his life, next to his Biblioteca San Joaquin wife, Chela.

Murrieta Library This love is further recognized in the story “Un Día A La Vez, Dios Mio” (One Day At A Time, My Lord).

Years earlier, Mom had asked me to listen to a song on an eight-track cassette called “Un Día a La Vez”

by Los Tigres del Norte. She wanted me to learn it and sing it to her on the guitar. “Quiero que la aprendas y que me la cantes con tu guitarra,” she said. “Sure, Mom,” I promised, “I’ll learn it.” But in time, like so many other promises I had made to her, I forgot all about it and so had she, I thought (145).

In selecting this song, Rios is sharing with us a deep faith in God and oneself that he learned from his mother —who had been diagnosed with cervical cancer— and a faith that was to support him and his wife as she suffered through many medical issues of her own.

Over the years I have had the pleasure of knowing many prominent Chicano poets and writers. One that immediately comes to mind is Jose Montoya, the “eslimed” down author of the poem, La Jefita (In Formation: 20 Years of Joda. 1992. Chusma House Publication) Rios’ version is the story, “Three Fingers of Flour and Two of Salt.”

I could hear the hiss of the beans as she scooped them into the hot mantecaor lard, “Zzzzzzzzzt!” Under a low flame, she then let them simmer until they thickened into a paste. “El sabor está en la manteca.”And indeed the lard was where their great taste lay (63).

How many of us can today take a mental journey back to the days when as chavalitos we stood in the cocina dipping fingers into bowls of chile-sizzling Mexican food, as we pretended to help out, and in the process, had our first lesson in Mexican culinary arts.

Thirty years later my mother, Celia Muñoz Soto, was surprised when I went to visit her con una olla de capirotada, the recipe I had somehow memorized, watching her, as she layered on the ingredients.

Christmas, Posadas, and Easter are days when Mexican families traditionally get together to bond and create memories. Rios has done an excellent job of pricking our memory of experiences we can all share.

“Dichos” or Mexican sayings are a way of sharing years of accrued wisdom through experience or observation of life. One of myfavorite dichos is “El hambre me tumba pero mi orgullo me levanta.” Rios also shares a few of his mother’s favorite words of wisdom in the story “A True Rooster in any Henhouse Can Crow” “. Para las chismosas or chismosos, “En boca cerrada, no entran moscas (In a closed mouth, flies do not enter)” or be careful of what you say, it may come back to you. The Mexican author, Laura Esquivel in her book Malinche (2006, Atria Books) describes the same scene when Malinalli at the age of four is walking with her grandmother and they stop to rest inside a cave with an echo. The young girl was amazed when she found the echo returning her words. The grandmother explained that this was why it was so important to honor the

L I TE R AT U R A word. One of the signs of a good book is if it has universal value. In his book, Songs From The Barrio Rios touches on values that people everywhere can relate to.

As I was reading this book I was also listening to one of my favorite songs sung

by Cornelio Reyna, Cuatro Estrellas En El Cielo, memorializing Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, Javier Solis, and the great Jose Alfredo Jimenez, and as I listened, the Rios’ book accidently opened to page 107, Para Los Tres Grandes (For the Three Great Ones), and his wonderful and epic poem, where he memorializes the three great post revolution muralist of Mexico: Diego Rivera, Jose Alfaro Siquieros, and Jose Clemente Orozco. Again, another sign of a good book is if it can be learned from and shared. In this poem, the writer has provided knowledge about Mexican art that can be used in an Art class, English class, or History class.

I am always concerned, and dislike it when a writer just copies the style of someone else. Richard Rios’ has his own style; it is fresh and unique, enlightening and culturally sensitive.

Recently Xavier “Tuffy” Tafoya —a community college school board member from Woodland, California— sent me a video on Mexican parenting practices. In this video you see the mother taking careful and accurate aim as she hurls a “chancla” at a defiant and rebellious malcriado. Rios’, “The Palo”, (pg. 93) joins “La Chancla” and “La Mirada” (the stare,) in the arsenal that has mischievous young ones break out in trembling tears at a distance.

Richard Rios has done a wonderful job in letting us journey through his family’s life, its warmth, its pain, its sorrow, but most of all he has shared with us the realization that we are not all that different, we are not alone, and while Barnes & Noble may ignore our literature, Rios puts it all out for us to share, to relate, to cry or to laugh with, as we please.

In the book Pocho (Doubleday Anchor Book , 1959) Jose Antonio Villarreal takes us from the Mexican Revolution of 1910, migrating to the U.S., suffering the Great Depression, the loss of language, the breakup of the family and the success of surviving and making it. In his book, Rios takes us through the same journey but in thoughtful essays and enlightening, easy to read poetry.

You will enjoy this book.

Cantos Desde El Barrio CRECIENDO EN MODESTO, CA Richard Ríos 2012

Era miércoles, el 19 de diciembre del 2012, en el Centro del Patrimonio Mexicano ubicado en Stockton Centro, institución donde el Maestro, Poeta, Escritor y muy respetado líder comunitario Richard Ríos —miembro fundador de Los Artistas del Valle— ha pasado 25 años o más, creando.

En ese frío anochecer docenas de personas de Stockton, Tracy, y ciudades circunvecinas se reunieron en un lleno total para escuchar a Ríos leer fragmentos de su tan esperado libro: Cantos Desde El Barrio, Creciendo en Modesto, CA. ¡Valió la pena!

Ríos, con su típica personalidad, tranquila y respetuosa, comenzó compartiendo un poco de su vida personal con la audiencia, el resto se incluye en sus breves relatos y poemas.

“Cantos” inmediatamente nos introduce en la familia y las experiencias cotidianas de Ríos, cautivándonos al sentirnos identificados con el dolor y placer de también habernos criado en el barrio.

Mi madre, Guadalupe, que se casó a los quince y tuvo su primer niño a los dieciséis, quien conoció de cerca la pobreza y los estragos de la Revolución Mexicana, quien presionó a mi padre para dejar México e ir a los EEUU para darles una mejor vida a sus hijos.

En este corto pasaje se establece un futuro lleno de desafíos, batallas por librarse y por ganarse. Comenzamos también a sentir el enorme amor y respeto que Ríos tiene por su madre, al mujer más importante en su vida, próxima a su esposa, Chela.

Este amor es corroborado en Un Día a la Vez, Dios Mío (pág. 145) Años antes, Mamá me había pedido escuchar un cartucho de 8-pistas titulado ‘Un Día a la Vez’ por Los

Tigres del Norte. ‘Quiero que la aprendas y que me la cantes con tu guitarra,’ me dijo. ‘Seguro, Mamá’, prometí, ‘me lo aprenderé’, pero como tantas promesas que le hice la olvidé y creí que ella también.

Al seleccionar esa canción, Ríos nos comparte esa inmensa fe en Dios y en uno mismo que heredó de su madre —a quien se le había diagnosticado cáncer cervical— y una fe que los sostendría a él y a su esposa quien sufriría condiciones médicas propias.

Al pasar de los años he tenido el placer de conocer muchos poetas y escritores chicanos de prominencia… un que me viene inmediatamente a la mente José Montoya, el “eslimeado” autor del poema La Jefita (In Formation: 20 Years of Joda. 1992, Chusma House Publications) La versión de Ríos es “Tres Dedos de Harina y Dos de Sal” (Pág. 63) Podía escuchar el chirriar de los frijoles al vaciarlos en la ardiente manteca, ‘¡zzzzzzzzzt!’ A baja lumbre los dejaba cocerse hasta convertirse en una pasta. ‘El sabor está en la manteca’.” Y, en verdad, era en la manteca donde estaba todo el sabor.

Cuántos de nosotros pueden realizar ese viaje mental a aquellos días de chavalitos, parados en la cocina, pasándole los dedos a comidas bien enchiladas y mexicanas mientras pretendíamos ayudar tomando, sin querer, nuestras primeras clases en el arte culinario de México.

Treinta años más tarde mi madre, Celia Muñoz Soto, se sorprendía cuando la llegué a visitar con una olla de capirotada, receta de la cual había de alguna manera memorizado observándola a ella agregando cada ingrediente.

Navidades, Posadas y Pascua son los días cuando las familias mexicanas se reúnen tradicionalmente para mantenerse unidos y crear recuerdos. Ríos logra muy bien el hacernos recordar experiencias por las que todos pasamos.

“Dichos” o proverbios mexicanos son una forma de compartir una sabiduría recolectada de años de experiencia u observando la vida.

Uno de mis dichos favoritos es “El hambre me tumba, pero el orgullo me levanta” En la pág.

91 Ríos nos repite los favoritos proverbios de su madre. Para los chismosos o chismosas, “en boca cerrada no entran moscas” que advierte sobre callar porque lo que dices te puede costar. En su libro Malinche (2006. Faces In The Ra Since my early years in photography, I have been attracted to the chaos and unpredictability of nature’s patterns and cycles. The variety of colors, textures and organic origins present in the natural world are enigmatic and hypnoticand I have always seen a divine correlation in them, the divinity of Mother Nature.

In my photographs, I have attempted to convey the inherent beauty, allure and chaos to the viewer, and until now, compose them with various photographic techniques. However, in these images, I decided to forego these technical applications, and go with my gut instinct.

These photos were captured in the coastal town of Jenner, California. I awoke in the early morning and ventured into brinysea air, along a dark hillside path. When I emerged at the predawn coastline, I was met by the virgin rays of the early morning sun, that revealed stranded driftwood, felled hulks of Cypress trees, and the mesmerizing splotches of multicolored pebbles washed up along the shore;I rushed to capture these fleeting compositions, just as they were.

The rings of the wood, the lay of the pebbles, and the closeness of the tiniest bubbles of the ocean wash, were captured in an impromptu photo-shoot, shot at full frame and not manipulated in any way, except by post-production darkroom techniques.

Caras en la Naturaleza Desde mis primeros años en fotografía me ha atraído el caos y los impredecibles patrones y ciclos de la naturaleza.

Para mí la combinación de la variedad de colores, texturas y orígenes orgánicos presentes en el mundo natural es enigmática e hipnótica; siempre me ha atraído y siempre he visto en ella una correlación divina.

En el pasado he intentado manipular mi arte de manera de capturar la bellezaintrínseca, el magnetismo y el caos para, finalmente, presentárselo lo más patentemente posible al observador. Hasta hace muy poco me esforcé por incorporar estos elementos en mis variadas técnicas fotográficas. Sin embargo, en estas últimas imágenes, decidí olvidarme de metodologías y me fui por instinto.

Estas imágenes fueron obtenidas en el pueblo costero de Jenner, California. Me levanté muy temprano y salí al aire marino y salobre por un oscuro sendero orillando las lomas. Cuando me asomé a la costa todavía no salía el sol pero ya me esperaban mis objetivos fotográficos. Algo más tarde los rayos solares revelarían maderas a la deriva, troncos de cipreses caídos y el hipnotizador brillo de las piedras multicolores que arrojan las olas. Capturé todas estas composiciones como estaban y al momento de descubrirlas.

Así, mi obra aquí está dominada por el mismo caos y lo impredecible de lo que trato de emular. En este caos veo la intrínseca divinidad de la Madre Naturaleza. En esta divinidad veo las muchas caras que sólo la naturaleza puede ofrecer. Si uno se enfoca en las capas, uno puede ver figuras en las líneas de la madera, la disposición de las piedrecillas, y en la proximidad de las más pequeñas burbujas de la espuma marina. Son “Caras en la Naturaleza” Todas estas perspectivas fueron obtenidas en una sesión fotográfica espontánea, a marco total y sin manipulación alguna excepto las técnicas post-producción típicas del cuarto oscuro.

Para saber si un libro es bueno hay que ver si tiene valor universal. En su libro Cantos Desde El Barrio Ríos alude a valores con los que todos nos podemos identificar.

Mientras leía este libro también escuchaba una de mis canciones favoritas Cuatro Estrellas en el Cielo cantada por Cornelio Reyna en honor a Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, Javier Solís y el gran José Alfredo Jiménez. Mientras escuchaba el libro se me abrió sin querer en la página 107 “Para los Tres Grandes” y, en esa maravillosa y épica composición Ríos recuerda a los tres grandes muralistas postrevolucionarios de México: Diego Rivera, José Alfaro Siquieros, y José Clemente Orozco. Y otro indicio que un libro es bueno es si se puede usar y compartir. En Los Tres Grandes ofrece conocimiento que puede ser utilizado en una clase de arte, de historia y de inglés.

Siempre me preocupa y molesta cuando un escritor simplemente copia el estilo de otro.

Richard Ríos tiene el propio, fresco y único, iluminante y culturalmente sensible.

Hace poco, Xavier “Tuffy” Tafoya —directivo escolar de una universidad comunitaria en Woodland, California— me envió un video sobre prácticas de crianza mexicanas. En él se ve una madre tomando cuidadosa puntería para lanzar “la chancla” a un altanero y rebelde malcriado. El Palo (pág. 93) se une a “La Chancla” y “La Mirada” en el arsenal que hace que los chicos desobedientes suelten el llanto desde lejos.

Sin duda alguna, Richard Ríos logra abrirnos a su vida familiar, su calor, sus penalidades, tristezas, pero, sobre todo, ha hecho que nos demos cuenta que, después de todo, no somos tan diferentes, que no estamos solos y que, aunque Barnes & Noble puede ignore nuestra literatura, Ríos nos entrega todo para que compartamos, nos identifiquemos, lloremos o riamos dependiendo de cada uno.

En el libro Pocho (Doubleday Anchor Book , 1959) José Antonio Villareal nos hace viajar desde la Revolución Mexicana de 1910, la migración a los EEUU, el sufrimiento de la Gran Depresión, la pérdida del lenguaje, la desintegración de la familia, al triunfo de sobrevivir y tener éxito. En su libro Ríos no lleva por el mismo camino pero por medio de composiciones bien pensadas y poesía iluminante y fácil de leer.

However, I’ve served on many interview panels! I can attest to the fact that many students, not just a rare few, dress inappropriately to an interview. Bottom line, dress conservatively and professionally. Before you leave the house, ask yourself: “Does this outfit project ‘future leader’?”

For girls, tone down the makeup and hairstyle. I’m not saying to show up with a severe, librarian-style bun, looking washed-out and frumpy! In fact, research confirms that attractive candidates are perceived more favorably compared to an equally qualified, unattractive candidate. Therefore, I recommend female students put their best foot forward. Don’t wear distracting make-up like bright red lipstick, and leave the fake eyelashes and gaudy jewelry at home. For boys, clean it up. If you normally wear long hair, comb it back, away from your face. The goal for male and female students is to present themselves as scholars and future leaders: mature and professional.

Proper Etiquette

Don’t bring anything, other than a portfolio, unless specifically asked to do so. Don’t bring drinks, food, or anything that will be distracting to the interviewer. First priority: show up early (10-15 minutes). When meeting the interviewer or committee, firmly shake the hand of the person(s) conducting the interview, smile, and look them in the eye. Wait for the instruction to sit down, and follow the protocol established.

At this point, the interviewer may introduce an “ice-breaker” – to ease the student’s anxiety.

tions succinctly, yet thoroughly. At the conclusion of the interview, shake the interviewers hand and thank him/her for their time.

What if my interview is by phone? There are pro’s and con’s to a phone interview. The pro’s are that you can have all of your notes at your side while you respond to questions, you may be more relaxed in the comfort of your home, and you won’t have to worry about dressing up. The cons are that you won’t have any physical cues to help guide your responses (nonverbal communication) and you lose the ability to establish a more personal connection.

Profile of the Interviewer/Panel

Who will conduct the interview? Now that you know what to bring and how to dress, you will want to know who will be conducting the interview. This is an easy question! For the college interview, you will have already received an invitation (typically emailed) from the interviewer. Therefore, you will know the interviewer’s name, title, and affiliation. It will not be a mystery. Unless you have scheduled an interview on-campus, the interviewer will typically be alumni of the university. If the interview is with a scholarship panel, the interviewers will be individuals associated with the scholarship organization. These members have a vested interest in the college or organization and typically include members of the executive board, community members, and local business persons.

Preparing for the Interview

Students often ask me how it is possible

to prepare for an interview when they have no idea what types of questions will be asked.

While you cannot predict the actual questions that will be posed, it is fairly simple to prepare.

How so? First, you need to do some homework.

Research the college or scholarship organization, as well as the biographies of the individuals conducting the interview. This step is simple. You are not looking for famous alumni, or whether the school is ranked as a “top 10” in campus ground aesthetics! You want relevant information that logically inspired your decision to apply. This research will help you answer the #1 most commonly asked question: “Why are you applying to our university?” Be prepared. What specific program/major appealed to you? Is their program’s curriculum unique? Does the campus offer a particular internship or honors program? You will not be grilled on statistics, so don’t memorize irrelevant data. However, as a Latino student, you should be aware of factors that may impact your overall success rate – such as matriculation and graduation rates for Latino students. For example, in 2011 the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) and the University of TexasBrownsville (UTB) had large percentages of Hispanics obtaining Bachelor’s Degrees (91% for UTPA; 89% for UTB).*

Know your interviewer

In my college essay writing workshops, I always stress the importance of knowing your audience. This same rule applies to interviews. Knowing your audience doesn’t mean buttering up the interviewer so that your responses will be more appealing. It means using common sense and a little knowledge to

E D UC ATI O N tailor responses so that they are not offensive, as well as gaining insight to lead and direct discussion. Using a search engine on the Internet, search for the name and title of the interviewer. Most panel members are distinguished in their field, so it will not be difficult to find them online. You will want to know the interviewer’s educational background and academic interests, as well as the names of organizations in which the interviewer is involved and/or board appointments.

Knowing the academic and political leanings of this interviewer may come in handy.

For example, if your research confirms the alumni member assigned to your interview serves on several conservative boards, then you wouldn’t necessarily sway your responses to sound too radical. In contrast, if your interviewer is involved in several political activities like the Dream Act or National Council of La Raza, then you should take in consideration how to respond to certain questions. However, do not misinterpret this advice! I am not saying that interview panel members are narrow-minded, nor am I saying that you cannot express your true feelings about a particular topic. I am simply recommending that you exercise common sense and be mindful that the interviewer will be a human being – not a robot. Appreciate that we all have biases and we tend to favor people who are like ourselves.

Let me share an example from one of my students. My student was a biological science major who had an interview with Princeton University. She conducted research about her interviewer (a scientist) and found his Curriculum Vitae (CV) online. Since the interviewer worked for a national laboratory, and his research was published online, the student discovered the interviewer’s strong interest in String Theory. A week before her interview, she spent time studying physics; specifically, string theory. During their conversation, the student made a reference to string theory and they had a lengthy and lively discussion. Incidentally, this student received a very compelling financial aid package from Princeton.

Common Themes

Earlier I mentioned that interviewers are interested in specific qualities and characteristics, not particular answers. They are interested to know about your intellectual curiosity, how you formulate decisions, how you deal with difficult situations and crisis, and whether you are equipped and ready for the challenges of a rigorous university. They also want to know what makes you unique. Therefore, steer clear of “yes” and “no” answers, and always provide an example to clarify your point. For example, if asked whether you

have had a significant challenge in life, don’t say “no” and end the dialogue. Everyone has had a challenge of some type, so use the opportunity to explain to the interviewer how you used critical thinking skills to consider your options and what factors shaped your strategy to resolve the conflict. Again, it is not a particular answer they seek. Instead, they want to know how you handled the obstacle (problem solving skills) and what you learned from the experience.

Commonly Asked Questions

The most commonly asked question by a university will be, “Tell me why you are interested in our college.” Don’t respond by saying you are impressed with their reputation, graduation rate, athletic teams, or the architecture! Give considerable thought to this question, and answer honestly. Suitable responses should focus on their renowned faculty, research facilities, or the breadth of their curriculum. It may also be a combination of program offerings and on-campus organizations. This is where you will need to do your homework. Thoroughly explore all aspects of academic offerings relevant to your major, as well as any programs, clubs, or organizations that pique your interest. Other commonly asked questions include the following: Tell me a little bit about yourself.

Tell me about an obstacle you have overcome.

Tell me about a person who has significantly influenced you, and why.

Why did you select x major?

What has been your favorite extracurricular activity, and why?

Tell me about a recent book you read, that wasn’t part of your required coursework Tell me about a recent political issue that interested you.

Las desventajas son que no podrás ver reacciones que te ayuden a saber cómo vas (comunicación corporal) y que no podrás establecer una relación más personal.

¿Quién hará la entrevista? Ahora que sabes que traer y como vestir, necesitas saber quién efectuará la entrevista ¡Eso es fácil! Habrás recibido una invitación por correo electrónico que incluye el nombre, título y afiliación del entrevistador. No es misterio —a menos que hayas arreglado la entrevista en persona el entrevistador será, típicamente, un ex-alumno de esa universidad. Si la entrevista es con un panel de becas, los entrevistadores estarán relacionados a la organización que otorga las becas. Estos tienen un interés particular en esa universidad u organización e incluirán miembros del directorio ejecutivo, personajes de la comunidad y hombres de negocios.

Preparándose para la Entrevista

Muchas veces los estudiantes me preguntan cómo se prepara uno para una entrevista cuando no sabe qué tipo de preguntas se le harán. Aunque uno no puede predecir las preguntas específicas es relativamente fácil prepararse ¿Cómo? Primero se necesita hacer un poco de tarea preliminar. Investigarás la universidad u organización becaria; lo mismo harás con la biografía de los entrevistadores.

Saber de la universidad es simple —no buscas ex-alumnos famosos o si la institución está entre las 10 con los mejores jardines. Lo que quieres es información sobre que lógica te inspiró a postular ahí. Esta investigación te ayudará a contestar la pregunta que más se hace ¿Por qué quieres estudiar en nuestra universidad? Está listo. ¿Qué programa/carrera en específico te atrajo? ¿Es el plan de estudios diferente? ¿Ofrece esta sede un internado o programa avanzado? No te preguntarán estadísticas así que no las memorices, No obstante, como estudiante latino, deberías estar al tanto de factores que pueden afectar tus probabilidades en general, como la proporción matrículas por graduación entre latinos. Por ejemplo, en el 2011 la Universidad de Texas-Pan American (ATPA) y la Universidad de Texas-Brownsville (UTB) mostraron un gran porcentaje de hispanos graduados con un bachillerato (UTPA: 20 Joaquín JANUARY 2013

Conoce a tu entrevistador. En mis talleres de redacción universitarios siempre enfatizo en la importancia de conocer a la audiencia. La misma regla aplica a las entrevistas. El conocer a tu audiencia no significa hacerle la barba al entrevistador para que tus respuestas tengan mejor recepción, sino usar el sentido común y un poquito de información para acomodar respuestas de modo que no ofendan, como también manejar ese conocimiento para guiar la conversación, Por medio de un buscador de Internet, identifica al entrevistador. La mayoría de los entrevistadores se destacan en su campo por lo que no es difícil encontrarlos en línea. Querrás saber que educación e intereses académicos tiene el entrevistador, como también los nombres de las organizaciones a que pertenece como sus nombramientos. Saber qué influencias académicas y políticas tiene el entrevistador puede ser útil. Por ejemplo, si por medio de la Internet descubres que éste pertenece a variados directorios conservadores tienes que cuidarte de que tus respuestas no suenen muy radicales. Por el contrario, si está vinculado a actividades políticas como el Dream Act o al Consejo Nacional de la Raza debes tomarlo en consideración al contestar ciertas preguntas. Pero ¡Importante! ¡No malinterpretes este consejo! No estoy proponiendo que los miembros del panel son estrechos de mente ni que tú puedas expresar tus verdaderos sentimientos respecto a un tema en particular. Estoy solamente recomendando que utilices sentido común y que tengas en cuenta que el entrevistador es un ser humano, no un robot. Recuerda que todos tenemos prejuicios y es más fácil que nos guste la gente como uno.

Les compartiré un ejemplo de uno de mis estudiantes. Quería estudiar Biología y tenía una entrevista en la Universidad Princeton. Investigó a su entrevistador y encontró su currículo en línea. Éste trabajaba para un laboratorio nacional y sus investigaciones son publicadas en línea. Así, mi estudiante descubrió que a su entrevistador tenía gran interés en la String Theory (Teoría de Cuerdas) Una semana antes de su entrevista, mi estudiante averiguó todo lo que pudo sobre física, especialmente la teoría de cuerdas. Durante su conversación, ella mencionó la teoría de cuerdas y mantuvieron una larga y amena plática. Y sí, esta estudiante recibió un generoso paquete económico para estudiar en Princeton.

Temas Comunes

Mencioné con anterioridad que los entrevistadores están interesados en ciertas cualidades y características, no respuestas específicas. Están interesados en tu curiosidad intelectual, cómo formulas decisiones, como

enfrentas crisis y situaciones difíciles y ver si estás capacitado y preparado para los retos de una universidad rigurosa. También quieren saber que te hace especial. Por lo tanto un “sí” o un “no” no es suficiente… y siempre ofrece un ejemplo para ilustrar tu punto. Si te preguntan qué obstáculo importante has tenido en tu vida no digas simplemente “no he tenido” y des por terminado el asunto —todos tienen obstáculos de alguna índole de modo que aprovecha la oportunidad y cuéntale al entrevistador cómo analizaste concienzudamente tus opciones y qué factores tomaron parte en tu solución al problema. Nuevamente, ellos no buscan una respuesta particular, sino que quieren saber cómo manejaste la situación (saber resolver problemas) y qué aprendiste.

Preguntas Típicas de Entrevista

La pregunta más común será “Dime por qué te interesa nuestra universidad”. No contestes diciendo que estás impresionado por su reputación, la cantidad de graduados, el equipo deportivo ¡o su arquitectura! Piensa en ello y contesta honestamente. Respuestas aceptables deben centrarse en la fama de sus facultativos, medios dedicados a la investigación, o la amplitud de su plan de estudios. Puede ser también una combinación de los programas que se ofrecen y las organizaciones que hay en la sede. Es aquí donde se debe hacer un poco de tarea previa. Analiza minuciosamente todos los aspectos de las clases relevantes a tu carrera como los programas, clubes u organizaciones que te llaman la atención. Otras preguntas típicas pueden incluir las siguientes: Háblame un poco de ti.

Cuéntame de un obstáculo que hayas superado.

he rays from the sun crossed the window panes. Permeated everything: the sofa, the wall, the carpet... The trees’ branches projected their magic shadow, imprinting their soul in well-defined silhouettes of leaves upon every surface of the room.

Within such spiritual calmness, the child was contemplating the suspended, diminutive, colorful particles before his eyes. He could not understand why they were there, untouchable and, without light, invisible. He would stretch his hand to grab or scatter them, but the space remained the same: full and empty. With bright eyes —as if in a divine trance— he fixed his sight, penetrating as the solar rays themselves, to where his father was. “What are those little dots floating in the light?” he asked. “It is cosmic dust,” the man responded. “Cosmic what?” asked the kid.” “Dust, cosmic dust” his father continued, “ all the little floating dots are cosmic dust; everything that exists consists of those miniscule particles….” “Then all of us are cosmic dust too?” he asked.” “So how come we don’t float up in the air like those little dots?” “We do float” said the father, “everything floats, the stars in the immensity of the universe are suspended in space, within their orbits; we are particles within particles….”

The child tried to understand, however, immersed in that magic light he resorted to his fantasy’s logic. “Let’s eat the sun!” he said with a clean smile. The father, holding on the traditional, irrational logic of the incoherent adult —disconnected from the present, which is a child’s real happiness— answered emphatically, “The sun cannot be eaten, son.” “Yes, it can,” said the child “look!” And scooping up a handful of solar light from one of the walls, he ate it. The father then understood his lack of sensitivity and changed his attitude, just as the kid was extending his hand to invite his father to feast. “You want some?” “Yes” answered the father and smiled in complicity, as if he had won a great triumph. “We will eat the sun, I want to eat the whole sun,” the child said, full of enthusiasm. And they devoured the sun until the last ray.

Las ramas de los árboles proyectaban su mágica sombra, plasmando su alma dentro de las bien definidas siluetas de sus hojas sobre las superficies del cuarto. Entre esa calma espiritual, el niño contemplaba las pequeñas partículas suspendidas, de colores reverberantes ante sus ojos. No se explicaba cómo es que estaban allí, intocables y, sin luz, invisibles. Estiraba la mano para cogerlas o esparcirlas pero el espacio seguía igual: lleno y vacío. El niño quedó inmóvil frente a la ventana con su mirada extendida hacia el horizonte. El sol ya había caído con sus rayos más allá del ocaso; pero la luz no se disipó. Una Honesta Colaboración con México

U

na de las últimas actividades desarrolladas por Enrique Peña Nieto antes de su inauguración como presidente de México, fue el hacerle una visita a Washington, D.C. para entrevistarse con el presidente Barack Obama. El mismo día de la reunión, 28 de noviembre, el Washington Post publicó un texto de Nieto en el cual argumenta que los progresivos lazos demográficos entre los dos países deberían formar la base para unos lazos económicos aún más estrechos. Y, aunque el pragmatismo de ambos líderes les impidió declararlo abiertamente, el mutuo interés que crece entre los EEUU y México como resultado de la mezcla de su gente debería, de una vez por todas, reconocerse como la base de una verdadera colaboración entre los dos países.

Tan profundo y generalizado como el sentimiento anti-EEUU que prevalecía en México hace apenas una generación atrás, ahora la voluntad por estrechar lazos a todo nivel con este vecino es apoyada por la inmensa mayoría, como así lo demostraron los tres principales candidatos en las últimas elecciones mexicanas.

En nuestro lado de la frontera las cosas son bastante diferentes.

Una encuesta de Vianovo y GSD&M finalizada el 20 de noviembre pasado revela que la mitad del público estadounidense tiene una mala opinión de México; 72% creen que es inseguro viajar allí, 59% ven a México como originador de problemas para los EEUU, mientras apenas un 14% lo consideran un buen socio y vecino.

Las noticias sobre drogas y violencia son las que más influencian percepciones en los EEUU —casi la mitad de los participantes de la encuesta dijeron haber escuchado o leído sobre México durante el mes anterior y, de éstos, el 81% dijo recordar que las noticias eran sobre las drogas y la violencia de los carteles. Cuando se les dio la oportunidad de aventurar una causa de su mala opinión (sobre el vecino país) el 72% dijo que era por las drogas. No es de extrañar tampoco que la mala opinión sobre México tiene mucho que ver con la política conservadora.

El positivismo mexicano hacia los EEUU tiene múltiples bases. El cambio más marcado ha sido el dramático aumento en el intercambio comercial entre ambos países (300%), resultado del Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) de Norte América implementado desde 1994.

Segundo, más de 12 millones de inmigrantes mexicanos ahora forman parte de los Estados Unidos, lejos el mayor grupo nacido en el ex22 Joaquín JANUARY 2013

tranjero (31% del total) radicado aquí según el censo del 2010. Eso es una décima parte de la población de México, de lo que se deduce que casi toda familia mexicana tiene un miembro en los EEUU. Aún así, ésto es Gene Bigler, PhD solo parte de los lazos Writer & consultant demográficos, dado on global affairs, que hay casi dos veces former professor, retired diplomat más estadounidenses de origen mexicano nacidos en los EEUU (unos 21 millones) quienes también tienen familiares allá, aunque no tan inmediatos.

Tercero, semejantes lazos familiares crean lazos económicos, especialmente por medio de las remesas que se envían a México. Se calcula que en el 2010 sobrepasó los $21.000 millones, aproximadamente un 2,5% del Producto Nacional Bruto mexicano.

Cuarto, existen innumerables otras conexiones como educación, recursos acuíferos compartidos, control aéreo, cooperación medioambiental, integración industrial, cooperación policial y de seguridad doméstica, etcétera, esenciales en una relación de vecinos.

Está claro que el reciente flujo de buenas noticias hacia el lado mexicano ha hecho olvidar una historia de repetidas invasiones, imposiciones y explotación a México, pero la distorsionada información que llega a los EEUU es una barrera que impide a los estadounidenses comprender la importancia que tiene México para los EEUU. Por ejemplo, aunque México representa su muy pequeña proporción de las exportaciones estadounidenses (poco más del 13% o unos $200 mil millones —comparado al 80% que México envía a los EEUU), su valor es casi el doble de las exportaciones a China, y sólo lo sobrepasan nuestras exportaciones a Canadá.

Y, por supuesto, las exportaciones cuentan más porque suponen empleos para el país de origen.

Además, las exportaciones a México crecen paulatinamente y, con el progresivo aumento de producción en China en los últimos años, muchos empleos relacionados a la exportación han regresado a México, donde el potencial de integración con la industria estadounidense es mucho mayor y, al mismo tiempo, mejora la competencia en favor de los EEUU. True Partnership with Mexico

ne of the last actions by Enrique Peña Nieto, before his inauguration as President of Mexico on December 1, was a visit to Washington, DC to hold consultations with President Barack Obama. An op-ed by the Mexican leader published in the Washington Post on the day of their meeting, November 28, argues that the growing demographic bonds between the two countries ought to be the basis for still closer economic ties. A Vianovo and GSD&M Survey completed on November 20 shows that half the public in the U.S. have an unfavorable view of Mexico; 72% believe it is unsafe to travel there, 59% see Mexico as a source of problems for the U.S., while only 14% say it is a good partner and neighbor.

News about drugs and violence overwhelmi ngly shape perceptions in the U.S. About half the respondents to this poll said they heard or read something about Mexico in the last month, and of these 81% explained that the news they remembered was about the drug problem and cartel violence. When asked an openended question about the source of their negative views, 72% volunteered that it was related to drugs. Not surprisingly, the negative opinions about Mexico are also strongly related to political conservatism.

The positive Mexican orientation to the United States has multiple anchors. The thing that has changed the most is the positive impact of the huge increase (over 300%) in two-way trade that has taken place under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) since 1994.

Second, over 12 million Mexican immigrants now form part of the United States and were by far the largest foreign born group (31% of the total) here in the 2010 census. That is about a tenth of the population of Mexico, indicating that just about everybody there has some immediate family member in the U.S. Yet this is just part of the demographic bond, because there are almost twice as many Americans of Mexican origin who were born in the U.S. (about 21 million) who also have family ties, even if they are a little less immediate.

Third, such family ties explicitly create additional economic linkages, especially thru the remittances sent back to Mexico. In 2010, they were estimated to have surpassed $21 billion, about two and a half percent of the Mexican economy (GDP).

Fourth, there are the myriad other connections, including education, shared water resources, air traffic control, environmental cooperation, integrated industrial processes, law enforcement and continued on next page JANUARY 2013 Joaquín 23

national security cooperation, and so on, that are essential for neighbors.

Clearly, the recent record of good news to the Mexican side has completely overcome the legacy of repeated U.S. invasions, impositions, and exploitations of Mexico, but the distorted flow of information on the U.S. side prevents the U.S. from understanding Mexico’s importance to the U.S. For instance, although Mexico accounts for a far smaller proportion of U.S. exports (just over 13% of our exports or about $200 billion in 2011—while Mexico sends 80% to the U.S.) , that is still almost twice the value of exports to China and is surpassed only by our exports to Canada.

And of course, exports matter more because they are more closely tied to job creation in the country of origin. Additionally, U.S. exports to Mexico are also growing far more rapidly, and with the increasing cost of production in China in recent years, many export jobs are being shipped back to Mexico where the potential for integration with manufacturing in the U.S. is far higher and adds further to U.S. competitiveness.

One of the major subjects of discussion between President Obama and President Peña Nieto is the effort to create a new trade agreement, called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), in the Asia-Pacific Basin. Mexico is one of the eleven key participants in the negotiations for what has the potential to become a dynamo for trade expansion; one of the keys to recovering the prosperity that the U.S. achieved in the 1990s in great part because of NAFTA. This time the strong cooperation that Mexico has already forged with Colombia, Chile, and Peru in the Pacific Alliance (and on the verge of adding Costa Rica and Panama) has the potential to create a true Latin American pillar for the U.S. in the TPP to balance the disparity of interests represented by the other TPP partners.

Besides, this set of Latin American countries is generally growing more rapidly than their Asian counterparts in the TPP, and all also have a far greater propensity to import from the U.S. than do any of the Asian partners (Australia, Brunei, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam). In other words, the Obama strategy of a pivot to Asia will be even more successful to the extent that the U.S. does so in cooperation with Latin American partners. Mexico is the ideal Latin American country to convince the others that the U.S. will stand with them.

A major part of the problem with the distorted image the U.S. has of Mexico is that it prevents us from recognizing the positive trends and developments there, making it harder for Mexico to advocate for the U.S. For instance, most Americans believe violence in Mexico is 24 Joaquín JANUARY 2013

still escalating, but during the first ten months of this year, homicides there declined by a quarter or more in two of the three most important border regions of Mexico and declined some in 20 (of 29) other states. The remarkable progress that Mexico has made against top cartel leaders and the positive expectations about the conflict, have been lauded by former directors of the DEA and other U.S. experts but largely ignored or downplayed.

Instead, the anxiety Americans feel about Mexico leads about three-fourths of us to the conclusion that it is unsafe to travel in Mexico.

Close as we are to our neighbor, and despite the fact that well over a million U.S. citizens now reside there permanently, we fail to recognize that our neighbor is now undergoing one of the greatest tourism booms in its history. The result is that Europeans and Asians who must travel much greater distances at far higher costs are taking advantage of the incredible travel, vacation, and cultural bargains that are available in the many areas of Mexico that are safe to visit.

Blinded by stereotypes, few Americans recognize Mexican modernity –now second only to China in the value of electronic products exported to the U.S. – in part because of how integrated the economies of our two countries have become. For instance, much of the electronic components in U.S. automobiles and aircraft and other products actually originate in Mexico, but the industrial processes of North America are now so integrated that we don’t recognize how much of our Learjets and Boeing aircraft; Nissan, VW, and Ford vehicles; and other consumer products have their origin in Mexico.

As a retired diplomat, I am tremendously impressed by the large number of criminals that Mexico now extradites to the U.S., by the sacrifices that Mexico now makes to combat drug trafficking, by the new routine of working level law enforcement cooperation, by the access of U.S. officials to every corner of Mexico, and by the extensive high level consultations between not just our Presidents, but Cabinet officials, state governors, armed forces, specialized agencies, and even legislators, such as the delegation of Mexican senators who visited Sacramento earlier this year. On the other hand, I am appalled by how little the U.S. has been willing to yield to Mexico. We have failed to stem the flow of weapons that arm the Mexican bandits, to treat addicts and otherwise weaken American demand for drugs, or even consider alternative approaches to the problem that our neighbors and allies in Mexico (and Colombia) have respectfully suggested.

The time has come for the U.S. to recognize that Mexican cooperation with the U.S. in trade, law enforcement, border protection, and the other vital interests of close neighbors has now

PE R SPE C T I VE become comparable to that with Canada. As we do with our northern neighbor, the strategic value of Mexico and its true partnership with the U.S. needs to be fully recognized and appreciated.

Ciegos por los estereotipos, pocos estadounidenses pueden ver la modernización de México —hoy por hoy segundo sólo detrás de China en el valor de exportaciones electrónicas a los EEUU— en gran medida causa de la integración económica de ambas naciones. Por ejemplo, muchos de los componentes electrónicos de los automóviles y aviones se originan en México pero se pierden en la sección estadounidense de esta cadena de integración industrial haciendo que jamás reconozcamos cuanto producto originalmente mexicano forma parte de un avión Learjet o Boeing, o de un auto Nissan, VW ó Ford.

Como diplomático jubilado me impresiona notablemente la gran cantidad de criminales que México extradita a los EEUU, los sacrificios que hace ahora México para combatir el tráfico de drogas, la cooperación rutinaria de las fuerzas del orden, el acceso de funcionarios estadounidenses a todos los rincones de México, y el extenso nivel de consulta no sólo entre presidentes, sino en secretarios de estado, gobernadores estatales, fuerzas armadas, agencias especializadas e incluso legisladores, como la delegación de senadores mexicanos que visitó Sacramento a principios de este año. Por otro lado, me horroriza ver cuán poco están dispuestos los EEUU a hacer por México. Hemos fracasado en reducir el flujo de armas al bandidaje mexicano, en reducir la adicción o la demanda de estupefacientes, o siquiera considerar alternativas para enfrentar el problema que nuestros vecinos y aliados en México (y Colombia) han respetuosamente sugerido.

Ha llegado la hora que los EEUU reconozcan que la colaboración comercial, policial, de seguridad fronteriza y otros intereses vitales para vecinos inmediatos que tenemos con México es ya comparable a la que existe con Canadá. Y, así como lo hacemos con el vecino del norte, el valor estratégico y su honesta colaboración con los Estados Unidos debe ser totalmente reconocida y apreciada.

Coconuts and the Waking Giant

“The Sleeping Giant”wasa label bestowed on Latinos due to theirgrowing numbers and voting apathy, or at least that is how I understand it.My first recollection of the term was not until the 1980’s. In my political circleof consultants, the term was used to target and suppress, control or eliminate the potential Giant. The war was afoot and there were many battles to be fought. One of the weapons in the War of Control was the word ASSIMILATE —a minority must assimilate to the American way. It was also in this decade that I began hearing the term,Coconut. Sadly, what was missed was that the American way needs to evolve with Latino virtues, not the other way around. I believe that Coconuts (Brown on the outside, White on the inside,) never understood this and they embraced assimilation wholeheartedly.

It is time that the term “The Sleeping Giant” is changed to a term that announces our victories and successes. While it is said that History is written by the Victors, I can tell you that in the era of today’s technology, this is an outdated expression because the truth will not be suppressed. The battle is no longer being waged against only those who have Latino blood flowing through their veins, but also against those who are the epitome of Latino virtues. Recently, with pride I heard a non- Latino associate refer to himself as a Coconut in reverse.

In the past 2 decades, Latinos have been hit with a barrage of initiatives that have shaken the foundation of our virtues. Proposition 187, 209, 227, 5, 54 and HR4437 —all designed to attack the very essence of our cherished values: Work and Family. Our Faith has kept us going.

In 1993, California had a registered Latino Voter population of approximately 1.4 million; less than 20 years later, we are at 3.6 million registered. In that same 19 year period, our State Latino Legislative representation went from 7 to as many as 28; our Latino congressional caucus has also more than doubled.

We have all seen the emergence of Latinos in Politics. The Giant is waking.

While the skirmishes are held in the fields of education, business, the work place, health Care and civil rights, it is the field of politics that desperately needs changing. Every aspect of every day of our lives is touched by politics.

The food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, the air we breathe, the justice, or

lack thereof that we receive, or our educational system —all is controlled by politics.

Cocos y el Gigante que Despierta

“El Gigante Dormido” es un título con el que se denominó a los latinos por causa de su gran número y su indolencia con las elecciones, o por lo menos eso es lo que entiendo. No recuerdo haber escuchado ese término hasta los 1980s. En el círculo de asesoría política donde me desenvolvía la palabra se usaba para aislar y suprimir, controlar o eliminar ese Gigante en potencia. La guerra ya estaba declarada y había muchas batallas que dar.

Una de las armas en esta Guerra de Control era la palabra ASIMILACIÓN —una minoría debe asimilarse a la sociedad estadounidense.

Fue en esta misma década cuando empecé a escuchar el término Coco. Lamentablemente lo que no se entendió fue que la sociedad estadounidense necesitaba evolucionar incluyendo las virtudes latinas, no al revés. Creo que los Cocos (café por fuera, blanco por dentro) nunca entendieron esto y se entregaron a la asimilación con los brazos abiertos.

Es ya hora que el término “Gigante Dormido” se cambie por otro que anuncie nuestras victorias y triunfos. Aunque dicen que la historia la escriben los vencedores, puedo asegurar que hoy —en esta era de tecnología— ésta es una expresión obsoleta porque la verdad no será suprimida. La batalla ya no es sólo contra quienes tienen sangre latina en las venas, sino también contra aquellos que son ejemplo de virtudes latinas. Living and Dying in Stockton A Student’s View

Life in Stockton is somewhat terrifying because it’s a small town and it seems like everyone knows everyone!

The reason I say that is because it’s fairly easy to find out anything about someone because there’s always that one person who knows how to get in contact with someone you’re looking for, or they help the person that is looking for you, to get in contact with you.

O n the su r face this sounds intimate, friendly and helpful; however, in this town it can also be harmful.

Unfortunately, when you mention Stockton to somebody they immediately think of violence. So when Víctor Rodríguez you hear someone is Business Leadership looking for you, it auAcademy tomatically makes you Stockton, CA wonder why that person wants to find you.

Yeah, sometimes people have honest intentions in their social interactions, but sometimes it can be deceptive, which means there are devious reasons behind their angelic presence. As a result, as a “Stocktonian” I have become accustomed to keeping my head on a swivel as I walk to the store, or venture outside my own house, which is supposed to be my comfort zone.

It’s just insane that someone has to fear the people in the town they’re living it. You just never really know who you can trust. In this town your best friend can instantly become your worst enemy over something so simple as arguing with a friend.

My objective is not to make Stockton look bad, but to illustrate a vivid picture of what I see on a daily basis. These thoughts are constantly on my mind because of the senseless crimes that are being committed day in and day out. They lack motive and conscience.

Innocent people are dying, simply because they’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Those who commit these crimes fail to think about what they’re putting people through--the personal sorrow and the family hardships.

because someone from a rival gang hangs around the area.

Some people even go as far as attacking family members of their “enemies.” These are people completely innocent —gunned down because they are guilty by association. I have seen it first hand and it is horrible. Something needs to be done –and now--to put an end to this violence so people in Stockton won’t have to live in fear!

The solution is not as an easy one. Law enforcement needs to come down harder than ever on “gang members” and anyone else running around committing these senseless crimes. If it is impossible to cut off people’s connections to drugs and unregistered weapons, then we need stricter penalties for people that violate the law, longer sentences, and periods of time they serve under house arrest.

Vida y Muerte en Stockton

Perspectiva de un Estudiante Vivir en Stockton es algo preocupante porque es una ciudad pequeña ¡pareciera que todo el mundo conoce al otro!

Digo esto porque es relativamente fácil saber algo de cualquier otro porque siempre hay alguien que conoce a quien buscas o te puede comunicar con quien te lo puede ubicar.

Por encima todo esto se ve personal, amistoso y solidario; sin embargo, en esta ciudad, eso puede resultar peligroso. Lamentablemente cuando uno menciona Stockton el interlocutor de inmediato piensa en violencia.

Así que cuando te enteras que alguien te anda buscando, automáticamente te preocupas que alguien esté interesado en encontrarte.

Bueno, a veces la gente tiene buenas intenciones en su interactuar, pero también a veces

pueden ser engañosas, o sea que —detrás de su inocente personalidad— puede tengas motivos cuestionables.

Al final, como estocktoniano, me he acostumbrado a mirar para todos lados cuando voy al negocio de la esquina o incluso dentro de mi propia casa que se supone es mi zona de control.

Es absurdo que uno tenga que temerle a la gente de su propia ciudad. Nunca se sabe en quien se puede confiar. En esta ciudad tu mejor amigo puede convertirse en tu peor enemigo por el mero hecho de discutir con alguien a quien ellos conocen.

Mi objetivo no es poner mal a Stockton, sino que se den una idea de lo que yo veo a diario. Todo esto es porque no puedo dejar de pensar en todos estos crímenes sin sentido que se están cometiendo cada día. No tienen ni motivo ni responsabilidad. Muere gente inocente por el solo hecho de estar en un lugar en el momento equivocado. Quienes cometen estos crímenes no se dan cuenta de lo que hacen pasar a la gente —la tristeza personal y el sufrimiento de las familias. Estos “matones” corriendo y baleando a diestra y siniestra porque alguien de una pandilla rival vive por ahí.

Algunos incluso llegan al extremo de atacar familiares de sus “enemigos” Gente totalmente inocente —baleados porque son culpables por asociación. Lo he visto de primera mano ¡Algo debe hacerse —y ya— para terminar con esta violencia para que la gente de Stockton no tenga que vivir atemorizada!

La solución no es fácil. Se necesita implementar algunos métodos básicos y con mayor intensidad. Las autoridades deben caerle más firme que nunca a estos “pandilleros” y a quien sea que ande cometiendo estos crímenes sin sentido. Si la policía se pone más estricta creo que será más difícil para todo aquel que cometa este tipo de desmanes. Como es un hecho que es casi imposible desconectar a cierta gente de las drogas y las armas ilegales, hay que

acrecentar los castigos por quebrantar la ley.

Con esto digo sentencias carcelarias más largas o más tiempo en arresto domiciliario.

Durante las últimas dos décadas una caravana de iniciativas y movimientos ha hecho temblar los cimientos de nuestras Virtudes. Las proposiciones 187, 209, 227, 5, 54 y HR4437, todas han atacado la esencia de Lo Nuestro: Trabajo y Familia.

Nuestra fe nos ha mantenido a flote.

En 1993 California tenía una población electoral latina del orden de los 1,4 millones… menos de 20 años más tarde hay 3,6 millones inscritos. En esos mismos 19 años nuestra representación legislativoestatal aumentó de 7 a 28; también nuestra camarilla latina en el Congreso ha más que doblado sus miembros. Todos hemos visto el crecimiento de latinos en la política. El Gigante está despertando.

A pesar de las escaramuzas se libran en el ámbito de la educación, el comercio, el empleo, la salud y los derechos civiles, es en el campo de la política donde más se necesita un cambio. La política toca cada aspecto y cada día de nuestras vidas: la comida que comemos, el agua que bebemos, las ropas que vestimos, el aire que respiramos, la justicia o ausencia de ésta, o nuestro sistema educacional —todo es controlado por la política.

Si no lo han hecho ya, apelo a sus valores y pido que se hagan parte de nuestro gobierno, nuestro sistema político, y consideren aplicar nuestros valores a la labor de gobernar y de liderar. Desafíen a todos a que gobiernen con esas virtudes que no son sólo latinas, sino de casi todos aquellos que han migrado a los EEUU y formado este gran país. Pido que, al enfrentarse en esas escaramuzas y batallas a través de sus vidas, reconozcan su importancia política.
