The Perils of Ethnic Nationalism - Part 2 Ed Ramírez, Linden, CA

A

s discussed in the last issue of Joaquin, Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic instituted political practices based on ethnic nationalism creating a “them against us” division within his social and political realm of influence. He used the fear of “them” (non-Serbian groups) to build loyalty and expand his base of support. The fear of “them” became a unifying principle for his political campaigns and policies1. It seems as though President Trump will continue on a similar path if left undeterred.

Recent history shows that President Trump still has a tendency to use ethnic nationalistic rhetoric in his response to current events and controversies. His attack on black professional athletes kneeling or sitting during the National Anthem is a good example.

Trump’s use of vulgar and demeaning language in reference to “them” and using his reality TV show slogan “You’re Fired” calling for an end to their employment defies any recognition of their guaranteed rights of “freedom of speech” under the U. S. Constitution 2.

In Trump’s attack on black athletes protesting racial injustice and police brutality, he asserts that they are unpatriotic and undermining loyalty to the flag and to the country. The nationalist subtext is that white Americans have suffered loss while these athletes have prospered, and yet, they disrespect the American way of life and those who defend it. Protesting athletes fit nicely into the “them” against “us” dichotomy of ethnic nationalism, and Trump has seized the opportunity to exploit it.

It is not a coincidence that white supremacists have latched on to Trump’s slogan “make America great again” and have become some of his staunchest supporters. His nationalistic campaign rhetoric and recent policies have greatly enhanced white supremacists’ group identity and ethnic loyalty exposing the worst tendencies in American life3. Sadly, it is becoming apparent that Trump sees value in maintaining support from these groups evidenced by his unwillingness to condemn them at Charlottesville, and he has continued to support their continued on next page

El Peligro del Étnonacionalismo -2a Parte C omo se trataba en la última edición de Joaquín, el presidente serbio Slobodan Milosevic instituyó prácticas políticas basadas en nacionalismo étnico creando —dentro de la esfera social y política que dominaba— una división “ellos contra nosotros”. Utilizó el temor a “ellos” (grupos no-serbios) para crear lealtad y ampliar su base de seguidores. El miedo a “ellos” se transformó en un principio unificador en

sus campañas y políticas1. Pareciera que el presidente Trump continuará por el mismo camino si no se le detiene.

Eventos recientes revelan que el presidente Trump todavía tiene la tendencia de valerse de retórica etnonacionalista en su respuesta a recientes incidentes y controversias. Su ataque a atletas profesionales negros que se arrodillan o sientan durante el Himno Nacional es un buen ejemplo. El uso de lenguaje vulgar y denigrante al referirse a “ellos” y utilizando su slogan televisivo de “You’re Fired” como sugerencia que sean despedidos de sus empleos amenaza cualquier respeto a su derecho garantizado de “libertad de expresión” bajo la Constitución de los EEUU2.

En el ataque de Trump a estos atletas negros que protestan injusticia racial y brutalidad policiaca, asevera que son antipatrióticos y que minan la lealtad a la bandera y a la nación. El sub-texto nacionalista es que los estadounidenses blancos han sufrido pérdidas mientras estos atletas han prosperado y, sin embargo, faltan el respeto a la forma de vida norteamericana y a aquellos que la defienden.

Los atletas manifestantes encuadran perfecto en la dicotomía del etnonacionalismo de “ellos” contra “nosotros” y Trump no va a dejar ir esa oportunidad.

No es coincidencia que los supremacistas blancos se han aferrado al slogan de Trump “hacer ‘América’ grande de nuevo” y se han convertido en sus más acérrimos seguidores.

La retórica nacionalista de su campaña y sus últimas políticas han, formidablemente, engrandecido la identidad de superioridad blanca tanto como grupo como lealtad étnica, revelando una de las más deplorables tendencias en la vida estadounidense3. Tristemente, es ya aparente que Trump ve beneficio en mantener el respaldo de esos grupos, esto evidenciado con su falta de voluntad de condenarlo en Charlottesville, y ha continuado apoyando su posición que dicta que los monumentos confederados (símbolo de esclavitud para muchos) no debiesen ser removidos de la plaza pública4. position that confederate monuments (symbols of slavery for many) should not be removed for the public square4. He has shown no signs of willingness to relinquish the power of ethnic nationalism in unifying and building loyalty in what he considers his electoral base.

In a worst scenario, an unrestrained Trump administration would go all out to block entry of ethnic groups and expel members of ethnic groups already here —such as DACA recipients5— that Trump has portrayed as a threat to America. The administration would build walls along borders and build diplomatic walls to prevent entry in the name of “making America great again” and win support for exclusionary policies by amplifying the fear of job loss, rape, terrorism and murder.

The fear tactic, an essential element of ethnic nationalism, veils the underlying message of Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” which seems to be “Make America White Again.”

There is palpable fear among Trump supportEd Ramírez ers that America is being Linden, CA lost to criminal invaders from across the border. Therefore, cleansing these brown invaders from the Southwestern landscape by “building the wall” is in order.

Trump’s lack of restraint in fanning the flames of ethnic nationalism will continue to breed fear and hatred, and it could cause the treatment of the “undocumented” workers trying to cross the border to get out of control.

Right wing militias empowered by Trump’s rhetoric already patrolling the U.S./Mexican border might not feel any compunction in shooting trespassers or shoot claiming they were “standing their ground.”6 If this were to happen, it would constitute another step down the slippery slope of ethnic nationalism abuse

and a violation of basic human rights. Grotesquely, this could be another step for Trump in solidifying the loyalty of his electoral base.

In my opinion, this worst scenario may occur unless there are ongoing efforts to counter Trump’s ethnic nationalistic tendencies by all the forces that believe in and advocate for the Constitution of the United States and who are committed to civic nationalism.7 I believe there are many.

Ronald Wintrobe8 argued that Milosevic ignited the fire of ethnic nationalism in Serbia and was eventually burned and consumed by it because of its infectious and volatile nature (p.22). As Trump continues to fan the flames of ethnic nationalism in the U.S., it remains to be seen who will get burned here.

May God forgive us if we find ourselves having to answer the question, how did ‘ethnic cleansing’9 happen in the U.S. or on the U.S./ Mexican border?

En el peor de los escenarios, una administración Trump sin barreras se lanzará con todo a bloquear la entrada a grupos étnicos al tiempo de expulsar a los ya presentes —por ejemplo los beneficiados de DACA5 — que Trump ha catalogado como amenaza a los EEUU. La Administración construirá muros a lo largo de la frontera y muros diplomáticos para prevenir otras entradas en el nombre de “Hacer ‘América’ Grande de Nuevo” y así granjearse respaldo para políticas de exclusión al amplificar el terror a la pérdida de empleos, violaciones, terrorismo y homicidios.

La táctica del terror, elemento esencial del etnonacionalismo, revela el mensaje escondido bajo el slogan de Trump “Hacer ‘América’ Grande de Nuevo” que más pareciera “Hacer ‘América’ Blanca de Nuevo”. Hay un palpable miedo entre los seguidores de Trump de que los EEUU se están perdiendo a invasores criminales del otro lado de la frontera. En consecuencia, exterminar a estos invasores

La falta de impedimentos a Trump que le permiten avivar las llamas del etnonacionalismo continuará criando miedo y odio, y podría causar que el trato a los trabajadores “indocumentados” que traten de cruzar la frontera salga de todo control. Milicias ultraderechistas —que se sienten protegidas por la retórica de Trump y ya se hallan patrullando la frontera EEUU-México— puede no tengan empacho alguno en balear intrusos o matar arguyendo haber estado “standing their ground (defendiendo lo suyo)”6. Si esto ocurriese, constituiría otro paso en la resbalosa pendiente del abuso etnonacionalista y de los derechos humanos. Grotescamente, esto podría ser otro paso para Trump en cristalizar la lealtad de su base electoral.

En mi opinión, este peor escenario puede ocurrir a menos que hayan constantes esfuerzos por contrarrestar las tendencia etnonacionalistas de Trump por todas la fuerzas que creen y defienden la Constitución de los Estados Unidos y que están comprometidos a un nacionalismo cívico.7 Creo, hay muchos.

Ronald Wintrobe8 arguye que Milosevic inicio el incendio del etnonacionalismo en Serbia y fue, eventualmente, quemado y consumido debido a su naturaleza infecciosa y volátil (pág22). Así como Trump sigue avivando las llamas del etnonacionalismo en los EEUU, está por verse quién terminará quemado aquí.

Que Dios nos perdone si nos hallamos teniendo que contestar a la pregunta “¿Cómo fue que se llegó a la ‘purificación étnica’9 en los EEUU (o en la frontera EEUU-México)?”

Tree Culture Takes Root in School

P

r incipal Victor Zamora and several of his staff and teachers welcomed about 150 community members to a PUENTES sponsored tree planting workshop at Hazelton Elementary School on Saturday morning, November 18. In the first of what will be dozens of such events in Stockton over the next two years, about a dozen trees were planted to improve the school experience for Hazelton students and its neighboring community. This is all thanks to a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) grant awarded to PUENTES for its San Joaquin County Urban Tree Canopy Revival (SJCUTCR) project.

With the guidance of collaborating arborist Jeff Gamboni and landscape architect Chris Jepson, PUENTES urban forestry specialist Javier Gardea translated the instructions into Spanish and helped illustrate the proper techniques to the eager tree planters. Volunteer assistants from San Joaquin Delta College, University of the Pacific and the community worked with the participating families to create a beautiful screen of trees to wall off the noise, pollution, and intrusiveness of I-5 on the west side of the Hazelton playground and ball field.

City Councilman Jesus Andrade and over a dozen other young fathers joined with their children who attend Hazelton to help with the tree planting chores. Plenty of moms and grandmothers also joined with daughters and sons in placing the seedlings in their carefully laid out locations as SUSD Board president Maria Mendez, Acting Superintendent Dan Wright, and Assistant Superintendent Reyes Gauna also looked on.

The planters took special care to make sure that the 15-gallon trees were placed at just the right height in their holes, the nutrients added in the proper way and the staking done correctly to produce strong trunks. Most of the trees are camporas and will provide yearlong greenery to the tree screen, but a few Chinese pistachios and two elegant spruces will create a harmonious blend with the existing foliage.

a mañana del sábado 18 de noviembre, el director de la Primaria Hazelton, Víctor Zamora—como también varios entre su personal y docencia— abrieron las puertas de su escuela a unos 150 vecinos para un taller, auspiciado por PUENTES, sobre cómo plantar árboles. En lo que serán docenas de eventos similares en Stockton por los próximos dos años, se plantaron más de dos docenas de árboles

que enriquecerán la experiencia de los estudiantes de Hazelton y la comunidad vecina. Esto se logró gracias a una subvención del Departamento de Protección de Incendios Forestales de California (Cal Fire), otorgada a PUENTES para su proyecto Restauración del Manto Arbóreo-Urbano del Condado San Joaquín (SJCUTCR, por sus siglas en inglés).

Bajo la dirección del colaborador y fitólogo Jeff Gamboni y el arquitecto paisajista Chris Jepson, el especialista forestal de PUENTES, Javier Gardea, tradujo las instrucciones al español ayudando así a los entusiastas sembradores de árboles en las técnicas apropiadas. Asistentes voluntarios de San Joaquin Delta College, Universidad del Pacífico y otros vecinos trabajaron con las familias participantes para crear una hermosa valla de árboles como barrera al ruido, contaminación u otras intromisiones derivadas de la Interestatal 5 hacia el área oeste, donde se hallan los patios y campo de pelota de Hazelton.

El Concejal Jesús Andrade y más de una docena de otros jóvenes padres se unieron a sus hijos quienes estudian en la Hazelton para ayudarles en las tareas de plantar. Muchas mamás y abuelas también se incorporaron a hijas y nietos para asentar los vástagos arbóreos en espacios cuidadosamente elegidos mientras María Méndez, presidente del Directorio Escolar del SUSD, el Superintendente enfunciones Dan Wright, y el Superintendente Asistente Reyes Gauna observaban.

Los plantadores se preocuparon que cada uno de estos árboles de 15 galones se emplazara a la altura correspondiente en su respectivo hoyo, que los nutrientes se agregaran apropiadamente, y que las estacas se fijaran como para producir troncos fuertes.

La mayoría de los árboles son alcanforeros y brindarán verdura a la arboleda todo el año, mientras que unos cuantos pistachos chinos y dos elegantes abetos crearán una armoniosa combinación con el follaje existente.

the Durham Ferry Outdoor Learning Center.

These outings at the rustic facility operated by the San Joaquin County Office of Education will enable these students to understand the tree planting experience in the broader context of the ecology needed to sustain a healthy community.

Meanwhile, PUENTES is developing a tree nursery at the Boggs Tract Community Farm and will begin growing trees that will later be offered to families who have participated in the tree planting workshops for planting in their own yards. Additionally, students in the new Stagg High School agricultural science program will participate in more extensive training at Durham Ferry to help them develop skills needed to be employed in the urban forestry field.

Finally, PUENTES is partnering with the Port of Stockton, the Ten Space downtown development project, and the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds to plant about 600 more trees in some of the environmentally most vulnerable neighborhoods of our city.

Altogether, the 1200 plus new trees of this project will help revitalize the tree canopy across many neighborhoods, improve their air quality, remove harmful greenhouse gases and other pollutants from the atmosphere, make the areas more walkable, and reduce the heat island effects of our urban area.

dos años se realizarán plantíos similares con muchos otros tipos de árboles en otras diez escuelas de Stockton Unificado para aumentar el beneficio medioambientales que brindan los mantos arbóreos, tanto para sus escuelas como para sus respectivos vecindarios.

Pero ésta es solo la primera etapa de integración del proyecto en estas comunidades. El próximo semestre estudiantes de cuarto grado, tanto de Hazelton como de otras escuelas de Stockton, realizarán viajes de estudio organizados por SJCUTCR al Centro de Aprendizaje al Aire Libre Durham Ferry. Las visitas a esta rústica dependencia de la Oficina de Educa-

ción del Condado San Joaquín permitirán que los estudiantes comprendan la experiencia de plantar un árbol en el más amplio contexto ecológico, necesario para sustentar una comunidad más sana.

En el ínterin PUENTES está levantando un vivero en la Granja Comunitaria de Boggs Tract y comenzará a criar árboles que más tarde serán ofrecidos a las familias que han participado en los talleres se siembra de árboles para que los planten en sus propios patios. Además, estudiantes del nuevo programa de ciencias agrícolas de la Secundaria Stagg se integrarán a una capacitación más profunda en Dunham Ferry, mismos que les entregara las herramientas para conseguir empleo en el campo forestal.

Finalmente, PUENTES se ha coordinado con el Puerto de Stockton, el proyecto de urbanización del centro Ten Space, y con la Feria del Condado San Joaquín, para plantar unos 700 árboles adicionales en algunos de los barrios más vulnerables de la ciudad, medioambientalmente hablando.

En conjunto, los más de 1200 árboles de este proyecto ayudarán a revitalizar el manto arbóreo de muchos vecindarios, mejorará la calidad del aire, removerá nocivos gases de efecto-invernadero y otros contaminantes en la atmósfera, hará sectores que inviten a caminar, y reducirá el efecto de calor insular de nuestra zona urbana.

Racismo, Ilegales y los mexicanos

S

er un bien-informado descendiente de un auténtico revolucionario mexicano siempre me ha dado orgullo.

Crecí a la sombra de Pancho Villa y me consideraba heredero de sus sueños. Antes de su muerte, mi abuela, de Torreón, hablaba mucho de él.

La revolución era un constante tema de los viejos a lo largo de la frontera mexicoestadounidense. Los más viejos entre mis parientes habían tomado parte en la lucha y gozaban contando sus historias. Valentía y sacrificio siempre iban juntos la misma frase.

Es por esto que es tan difícil reconciliar la masacre de cientos de chino-mexicanos de Torreón en 1911.

Como siempre, tiene mucho que ver con la racista legislación estadounidense diseñada para mantener a los asiáticos fuera. El Acta de Exclusión China de 1882 forzó a que 60 000 chinos que viajaban a Estados Unidos a buscar empleo, cruzaran ilegalmente a México. Muchos trabajaron en los ferrocarriles mexicanos y se afincaron a lo largo de las ferrovías del empalme de Torreón, eventualmente llegando a ser una comunidad autosuficiente dentro de la ciudad.

La desconfianza, envidia y odio hacia los afuereños creció con los años y finalmente se trocó en terror. El 13 de mayo de 1911, rebeldes leales a Francisco Madero arribaron a Torreón a expulsar a las fuerzas federales mexicanas.

Los defensores obligaron a los chinos a ayudarles mientras usaban sus casas como trincheras contra los maderistas. Dos días más tarde los federales se fueron y los rebeldes no hallaron con quién cobrarse desquite, por lo que comenzaron a matar y quemar todo lo que oliera a oriental.

Antes que se pudiese detener, más de 300 chinos, unos cuantos japoneses —e incluso algunos mexicanos que trataron de intervenir en su defensa— yacían masacrados. Fue el peor acto de matanza racista en lo que iba del siglo en toda América. Hay reportes que aseguran que fue la intervención personal de Emilio Madero, hermano del eventual presidente, la que detuvo la masacre.

Racism,‘illegals’ and the Mexican factor

eing the well-documented descendent of a genuine Mexican Revolutionary has always been a source of pride. I grew up in the shadow of Pancho Villa and thought of myself as heir to his dreams. Before her death, my grandmother from Torreon, often spoke of him.

The topic of revolution came up often along the Texas-Mexican border while listening to old men telling stories. This is why it was so difficult to reconcile the massacre of hundreds of Chinese-Mexicans of Torreon in 1911.

As usual, it has to do with American racists legislation designed to keep out Asians.

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 forced 60,000 Chinese immigrants traveling to the United States seeking work, to cross the border illegally into Mexico. Many worked on Mexico’s railroads and established homes along Torreon’s railroad junction that later became a self-sustained community within the city.

Distrust, envy and hate of the newcomers grew with the years and finally turned into horror. On May 13, 1911, rebels loyal to Francisco Madero arrived to Torreon to expel Mexican federal forces. The defenders forced the Chinese to help them while using their houses and buildings to shoot at Maderistas.

Two days later the Federales left and the rebels found no one to take revenge on, so they began killing and burning everyone and everything that look Asian.

Before they could be stopped over 300 Chinese, a few Japanese —and even some Mexicans who tried to intervene on their behalf— had been murdered. Madero —the soon-to-be-president’s brother—to stop the killings.

The Chinese government protested and demanded reparations. Francisco Madero —who came into power a year after his revolution forced out dictator Porfirio Diaz— finally agreed that Mexico would pay 3 million pesos to the Chinese survivors, money that was never paid because he was assassinated, and the many provisional governments that followed his, neglected it until it was forgotten.

This does not mean that anti-Chinese racism was over with. Other massacres followed and, in 1923 —during the administration of Alvaro Obregon— legislation stated that ethnic Chinese could not sell food, were not allowed in restaurants or museums, hold government-paid jobs, and explicitly prohibited Chinese-Mexican marriages.

This embarrassing chapter of the Mexican Revolution was deliberately omitted and poorly documented. I learned of it when I began researching. I was saddened to discover this unhealed wound, upon innocent people who faced the same obstacles Mexicans in the U.S. face while seeking the “American Dream.”

Today there are only two important Chinese communities remaining in Mexico, La Chinesca in Mexicali, and El Barrio Chino in Mexico City, totaling about 8000.

Ironically, UCLA Professor Dr. Robert Chao Romero notes, given that Mexicans moved “freely” across the Mexico-US border— and the Chinese escaping persecution in Mexico ran north in spite of the U.S. Chinese Exclusion Act— the first illegal immigrants from Mexico were not Mexicans, but Chinese.

Adams Shares Pie with a Parent

ver 143 families at Adams Elementary participated in the school’s first-ever “Pie with a Parent” event! The event, aimed at boosting parent participation, required 36 pies in order for everyone to have a slice- that’s a LOT of pies!

The event was made possible through donations from Cash and Carry and Costco, and help from the Adams staff, who contributed the rest of the funds needed to make the event possible. Staff members also worked for hours straight to cut the slices of pie for families.

“In an effort to foster a sense of community while also trying to increase parent involvement, our Adams ‘Family’ is making an effort to increase activities in order to get parents on campus and be more involved in their child’s education,” said Adams Principal Sharon Womble. “We believe it truly takes a village to raise a child and we would love for our parents to be part of those efforts here at school as well. “ In addition to the school’s regularly scheduled parent engagement events, Adams Elementary has added ‘Pie with a Parent,’ a spaghetti feed, an egg hunt, a student showcase night, a talent show and more ‘Lunch on the Lawn’ picnics this school year.

unque los indígenas del norte del Valle del San Joaquín eran por lo menos la mitad de los buscadores de oro en 1848 (ver capitulo anterior), barcos e imprentas diseminaron la noticia a los Estados Unidos y alrededor del mundo, y pronto fueron decenas de miles de “argonautas” los que pasaron por las tierras ancestrales de estos nativos. La población indígena del corazón californiano se asentaba en el corazón de la primera fiebre de oro internacional y de la inmigración en masa de todo el orbe. Sus tierras —sus villas, sus meticulosamente cuidados campos de recolección de frutas y verduras y caza, sus hitos sagrados— desaparecieron, casi totalmente, perdidos para siempre.

En el otoño de 1848 habían aparecido los primeros buscadores de oro venidos de lejos, desde Oregón por el norte, a las islas hawaianas al oeste, y de México hasta Chile por el sur. lthough Indians from the northern San Joaquin Valley comprised at least half of the gold seekers in 1848 (see previous installment), ships and printing presses spread the news to the United States and around the world and soon tens of thousands of gold seekers passed through the traditional homelands of these Indians. The Native peoples in the California heartland were at ground zero of the first international gold rush and worldwide mass-migration.

Their homelands—their villages, their carefully-tended gathering and hunting grounds, their sacred landscapes—were for the most part lost forever.

In the autumn of 1848, the first distant gold seekers had appeared, from Oregon to the north and the Hawaiian Islands to the west, and from Mexico and Chile

to the south. The following spring arrived the first immigration by sea from the eastern United States, and in the late summer and autumn, the first of the great annual overland migrations.

Within a year the small [non-Indian] population of California—perhaps on the order of thirteen thousand at the time of Marshall’s discovery—had been submerged by a foreign population eight times as large, and each successive annual immigration further inundated it.1 American gold miners quickly tired of competition from Chinese, Mexicans, Chileans, French, Native Americans, and other “foreigners,” particularly in the Southern Mines.2 “The liberty, the exhilarating sense of personal freedom that only such a farflung frontier could offer, was also the liberty

denied to gold-rush immigrants of color” and especially to California Indians.3 The miners passed discriminatory taxes and otherwise put down Chinese and Hispanics. They killed Indians. “[Indians] became the universal target of all groups in the California gold fields. Rumors of Indian depredations drew together varied miners into groups for reprisals.”4 California’s first U.S. governor, Peter H. Burnett, said in an address to the State Legislature in January 1851: “That a war of extermination will continue to be waged between the two races until the Indian race becomes extinct…”5 Records indicate that miners murdered at least two hundred Miwok from 1847 to 1860, and overall as many as one hundred thousand California Indians were murdered continued on next page during the Gold DECEMBER 2017 Joaquín 11

unteer militia for hunting down and killing Indians, paying bounties for dead Indians, and creating makeshift reservations—were an ongoing concern.

Outright murder was only one genocidal method employed against Native people. The natural resources upon which Indians had traditionally relied where quickly decimated by the miners (see next installment). Native people were allowed to starve and were left to the ravages of disease, children and women were stolen in large numbers, and traditional Indian social and cultural structures were attacked in various ways.

As Lindsay and Madley detail, these practices all fit the United Nations definition of genocide. As a result, “By 1900 the California Indian population was only 10 percent of what it had been in 1848…”10

A key to understanding the relationship between Native Americans and nonNatives in California is to recognize… a genocide of monstrous character and proportions, perpetuated by democratic, freedom-loving U.S. citizens in the name of democracy, but really to secure great wealth in the form of land against Indians cast as savage, uncivilized, alien enemies.6 Although the most heinous extermination campaigns occurred in the northern Sacramento Valley, the northwest coast, and the southern Sierra Nevada foothills, there were campaigns in this area, too. t was the through my study of Pre-Columbian history that inspired me to paint their history, legends, myths, and deities, but in a style that derived from European masters. I don’t recall learning about or seeing pictures of Mexican history in the books of my public schooling.

These indigenous artists dedicated their exquisite works of art to their deities, creating them with their hearts, hands, spirit and soul, and my work follows in this tradition. asé un maravilloso feriado, esperando que la cena se cocinara y se sirviera. Durante la espera me pasé un rato con mi ordenador portátil en mi rutina diaria de buscar nuevos y buenos libros para adquirirlos para el Centro Chicano de Investigación.

No fue en vano.

My Father and the Mexican Revolution (Mi Padre y la Revolución Mexicana) por Carmencristina Moreno me saltó de la pantalla, rogando ser comprado. Esperé entusiasmado su arribo por correo y después de comenzar a leerlo ya no lo pude dejar.

Diría que esta interesante obra se puede componer de cuatro partes básicas. Una, la Revolución Mexicana de 1910; dos, el padre de Carmencristina, Luis Medrano Moreno, hijo de un Yaqui de pura sangre; tres, los corridos que Luis Moreno compuso y cantó con su esposa Carmen; y cuatro, un poquito de propaganda feminista.

Si usted es aficionado a la Revolución Mexicana, le va a encantar este libro.

La Sra. Moreno ha realizado una excelente investigación de los principales personajes en la Revolución, desde Porfirio Díaz hasta el asesinato de los más cruciales —empezando con Madero y Pino Suárez, luego Zapata, Ángeles, Carranza Villa y Obregón. La Sra. Moreno individualiza cada líder, sus orígenes, el movimiento que encabezaron, su filosofía política, batallas y traiciones. Una cosa que no sabía era que —según la Sra. Moreno— Doroteo Arango tomó el nombre de ‘Francisco Villa’ por un conocido artista de ese tiempo, pero usó el popular hipocorístico ‘Pancho’ por ‘Francisco’.

My Father and the Mexican Revolution

by Carmencristina Moreno popped up on the screen and begged to be purchased. I eagerly awaited it`s arrival in the mail and, when it arrived and started to read it, I could not put it down.

I would say there are four basic parts to this exciting read. One, the Mexican Revolua la separación de Iglesia y Estado— la Sra. Moreno se remonta a la presidencia de Benito Juárez y a la ejecución del príncipe austriaco Ferdinand Maximilian que se había instalado como emperador de México en 1864. La Sra. Moreno no deja ningún cabo suelto, citando lugares, fechas exactas, y eventos y personajes en orden cronológico.

Luis Medrano Moreno —el padre de Carmencristina—era el producto del matrimonio de un nativo Yaqui y la hija de unos inmigrantes franceses, cabellos rubios y ojos azules incluidos. Luis quedó huérfano a la edad de ocho años y sin techo a los once.

If you are a fan of the Mexican Revolution you will love this book.

Mrs. Moreno has done an excellent job in researching the major players in the Revolution from Porfirio Diaz to the assassination of most of the key players —starting with Madero and Pino Suarez, then Zapata, Angeles, Carranza, Villa and Obregon. Mrs. Moreno identifies each leader, their origin, the movement they led, their politics, battles and backstabbing. One thing I did not know was that, according to Mrs. Moreno, Doroteo Arango took the name of ‘Francisco Villa’ from a popular entertainer of the day, although used the more popular form of “Pancho” for Francisco.

Because the Mexican Revolution was fought to keep the Constitution of 1857 intact —especially when it came to separating the Catholic Church from state functions— Mrs. Moreno goes back to President Benito Juarez and the execution of Austrian Prince Ferdinand Maximilian who had been installed as Emperor of Mexico in 1864. No rock has been left unturned by Mrs. Moreno and she sites specific dates in chronological order of events and players.

Luis Medrano Moreno —Carmencristina’s father— was the product of the marriage of a Yaqui native and the daughter of French immigrants, blue eyes and blond hair included.

Luis was orphaned at 8 and left homeless at eleven. He taught himself music and became a Mariachero at thirteen.

stress disorder’ (PTSD.) He served in the Sonora Yaqui Indian Division of the Constitutionalist Army led by Carranza and, after leaving the Revolution and Mexico, also became a victim of the Bracero Program, being exploited in the mines, agricultural fields and later taken advantage of by dishonest recording companies.

Luis and his wife Carmen were to form and perform under the name EI Dueto de Los Moreno. they also worked with Lydia Mendoza, Lola Beltran, Lalo Guerrero and many more of that time period. To help you appreciate many of the corridos written by her father Luis, Mrs. Moreno has included two CD’S in the book.

As you know corridos differ from other forms of music as they tell a story about a person, place or event, it was the poor people’s chronicle. Again, Mrs. Moreno helps us understand this form of music by translating from Spanish to English but she also breaks down the significance of key words used in

And finally, on page 136, Mrs. Moreno allows her contemporary feminist leanings to destroy what she had attempted to do by telling her father’s story.

Mrs. Moreno has vividly pictured the hardships, battles, exploitations, survival and struggles that made her father the man he was. He had become a Richard Soto Mariachero years before Biblioteca he met his wife, and Mrs. San Joaquin Moreno then states that Murrieta Library “without my mother, my father would not have written his songs.”

All in all this is a beautiful book that I recommend for all to read. Recently I have been reading books on nation building. Mexico went through an elitist Spanish nation building after the conquest and then again a nation building process after the Mexican Revolution of 1910, and Chicano-Mejicanos in the United States have been working on an identity since

the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1847.

As part of nation building one’s history and culture are critical. This book, My Father and the Mexican Revolution fills two critical components, history and culture in the form of music. Order the book and I know that you will enjoy it.

Prestó servicio en la División Indígena Yaqui de Sonora, parte del Ejército Constitucionalista que dirigía Carranza y, luego de dejar la Revolución y México, se convirtió en víctima del Programa Bracero, explotados en las minas, campos agrícolas, y más tarde abusado por disqueras deshonestas.

Luis y su esposa Carmen iban a formar un dúo bajo el nombre El Dueto de los Moreno.

También trabajaron con Lydia Mendoza, Lola Beltrán, Lalo Guerrero y muchos otros durante ese tiempo. Para que usted aprecie muchos de los corridos escritos por su padre, la Sra. Moreno ha incluido dos discos compactos en el libro.

Como sabe, los corridos se distinguen de otras formas musicales porque cuentan una historia sobre una persona, lugar o evento — eran los noticieros del pobre. Una vez más, la Sra. Moreno nos ayuda a entender esta forma musical no solo traduciéndola del español al inglés, sino también detalla el significado de palabras claves utilizadas en el corrido.

Y finalmente, en la página 136, la Sra. Moreno revela su contemporánea tendencia feminista para destruir lo que intentó al contar la historia de su padre. La Sra. Moreno ha descrito, con mucho realismo, las penurias, batallas, explotación, supervivencia y peripecias que hicieron a su padre como fue. Él ya era mariachero muchos años antes de conocer a su esposa, no obstante la Sra. Moreno luego declara que “sin mi madre, mi padre no hubiese escrito esas canciones.”

En general, este es un hermoso libro que recomiendo a todos leerlo. Recientemente he estado leyendo libros sobre cómo se construyen las naciones. Después de la conquista México pasó a ser un tipo de nación elitista española y, después de la Revolución Mexicana de 1910, nuevamente a un periodo de trasformación —y los chicano-mexicanos han estado tratando de identificarse desde el Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo de 1847.

Como parte de ‘construir naciones’ la historia de uno es clave. Este libro, suple dos importantes ingredientes: historia y cultura en su forma musical. Ordene este libro y estoy seguro que se va a deleitar leyéndolo.

l reciente anuncio de premiación de Ligas Mayores de Béisbol - Temporada 2017 refleja el verdadero carácter y color interamericano hasta donde ha avanzado nuestro pasatiempo nacional. Se distinguió al venezolano José Altuve —miembro de los Astros de Houston, campeones de la Serie Mundial— como el Jugador Más Valioso (MVP) de la Liga Estadounidense; mientras que el californiano Giancarlo Cruz Stanton, de los Marlins de Miami ganó en la carrera más apretada en la historia del premio de la Liga Nacional. Ambos casos merecen un análisis más detallado.

Altuve, a sus escasos 5 pies y 6 pulgadas, lideró las mayores como bateador y fue el obvio ganador del circuito juvenil. by Major League Baseball for the 2017 season reflects the truly InterAmerican character and color that our national pastime has achieved. Venezuelan José Altuve of the World Series champion Houston Astros was recognized as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the American League, while Californian Giancarlo Cruz Stanton of the Miami Marlins won the closest contest in history for the award in the National League. Both cases deserve further exploration.

Altuve, although just 5 feet 6 inches, led the majors in batting and was the runaway winner in the junior circuit. He then went on to help his team to victory in the Series, but our own Aaron Judge (who stands 6 feet 7 inches) now of New York Yankee fame and from the Linden farming community just outside Stockton, was the runner up. He was also the overwhelming favorite for Rookie of the Year award after hitting 52 home runs and obliterating other records set by Ted Williams, Babe Ruth and other historic luminaries of the game. Of mixed race heritage, Judge was adopted as a newborn and raised right here in the Central Valley before becoming a star athlete at Fresno State University. Further behind for the junior circuit MVP were two All Stars of the Cleveland Indians, José Ramírez from

the Dominican Republic and Francisco Lindor from Puerto Rico.

National League MVP Stanton is also a mixed race Californian who grew up on the west side of Los Angeles. Described as mainly Afro-American and Irish with a Puerto Rican grandmother, the slugger was just called ‘Mike’ growing up. Despite his 59 home runs, the most in 16 years, he narrowly defeated Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds, perhaps the greatest Canadian player in history and reminder of the gritty competitors of the game who never concede to the natural athletes.

Just a little further behind in the voting were three other players who ESPN’s Tim Kirkjian said were also worthy of the award.

Paul Goldschmidt who plays for the Phoenix Diamondbacks is a Texan of Catholic and Jewish descent and a grandson of a Holocaust survivor. Colorado Rockie’s third baseman Nolan Arenado is from a Cuban-Puerto Rican southern California family and came out just ahead of his centerfielder team mate, Charlie Blackmon, in the voting. Perhaps the most typical of the one-time white bread origins of most baseball players, Blackmon also breaks tradition as an honors graduate of Georgia Tech who is respected as an intellectual and professional financial analyst.

American mixture of color and national origin of these award winners provide a fitting segue to the players of the most exciting World Series in decades between the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers. For the first time in more than 80 years, two hundred-win teams carried the contest to seven games. The big star of the series of thrilling struggles was the Astros MVP outfielder George Springer, the highest drafted player from the state of Connecticut in history. His experience as a mixed race kid who used baseball prowess to overcome stuttering and shyness to become a community activist even added an inspiring side story.

Four starting players from Latin America on the Astros roster, José Altuve and Marwin González from Venezuela, Carlos Correa from Puerto Rico and Yuri Gurriel from Cuba, also made vital contributions to the narrow margin of victory. Meanwhile, the Dodgers had only two Latino starters, Cuban Yaziel Puig and Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández, while the Dodgers great relief pitcher Kenley Jansen from Curacao was balanced by the Astros Francisco Liriano from the Dominican Republic. Both teams added several reserve players from Latin America and the Dodgers included two Japanese pitchers.

Most accounts of the international dimension of baseball note only the fact that the number of foreign-born players has been increasing. In fact, a new record was ballyhooed at the start of this season when 29.8 percent of the almost 900 players on major league rosters and injured reserve were counted1.

Wouldn’t Donald Trump and his xenophobic supporters be startled to learn that the proportion of foreign-born stars wearing major league uniforms is over twice as high (about 14 percent) as in the general population? The overall number also masks the point that 259 (94 percent) of these international stars are actually from neighboring republics in the Americas, and only 17 were from outside our Hemisphere2.

Yes, baseball is becoming more international but mainly because it is becoming more inter-American. Since NAFTA, we have also had a steady flow of Canadian and many more Mexican players. While my wife from Germany and many Eurasian friends wonder why we call it the World Series, won’t President Trump also be frustrated to learn that we have all these imported players, including a number of Cubans who risked their lives to come here illegally, precisely because they make the game greater.

Hemisphere community of ball players, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela now send by far the greatest number of athletes to play here. However, the game actually spread to these Caribbean nations from Cuba, the first place it was popularized outside the U.S. A number of Cuban students and others came to the U.S. to study or seek political refuge in the early 1800s. The earliest accounts of baseball games they organized when they went back to the island come from the Civil War era.

By 1878 there were already enough players and public interest to organize a professional league there, less than a decade after the U.S. Non-black Cuban professional players were the first foreign-born ballers to come to the U.S. during the Jim Crow Era. The popularity of baseball spread after 1900 with U.S. overseas expansion. ecently, after a public reading of some of my poems, one of my ex-students came up to congratulate me. Though I quickly recognized her, I couldn’t remember when she’d been one of my students. “Mr. Rios, you haven’t lost your touch”, she said, excitedly. “I was always mesmerized by your lectures. I always came to class early, so I could get a seat in the front row.”

I felt humbled by her praise and later that day, I thought about how hard I’d worked at giving my students my best, to making each class a vital learning experience.

I meet ex-students everywhere I go, and more often than not, am warmly greeted by them. Most thank me for what they felt they learned in my courses. “You were one of the hardest teachers I had in college, but boy did I learn to write!”

“You tore up my writing, Mr. Rios, but thanks to you I learned how to write an essay.”

Usually, I can’t remember their names, or recognize their face, which always embarrasses me. Who knows how many hundreds of students passed through my courses during my thirty-three years of teaching? This isn’t to say all my students were fond of me as their teacher, oh no!

Most have dissolved into a vaporous memory, but oddly enough, certain ones I recall. Like one young man who joined my Chicano Literature course probably in the late 1970s. He was Jewish, in a class of predominantly Chicanos and extremely bright and well-read. I knew I would have my work cut out for me that semester. I was always thrilled to see a non-Hispanic face in my courses, though they were few and fewer still who braved it till the end of the semester. Unlike the majority of my shy and reserved Chicano students, he came to class prepared and regularly challenged the assumptions continued on next page

ecientemente —al finalizar de una lectura pública de algunos poemas míos— una de mis ex-estudiantes vino a felicitarme. Aunque la reconocí de inmediato, no pude nunca acordarme cuando fue mi estudiante. “Sr. Ríos, usted nunca pierde su magia’, dijo con entusiasmo, “siempre me encantaron sus lecciones. Siempre llegaba temprano a la clase para poder hallar asiento en la primera fila.”

Me emocionó su elogio y, más tarde, reflexioné en cuanto empeño puse en darles a mis estudiantes lo mejor de mí, para que cada clase fuese una experiencia de aprendizaje.

Me encuentro con ex-estudiantes donde sea vaya y, más veces que las que no, me saludan con afecto.

La mayoría me agradece por lo que sienten haber aprendido en mis clases. “Usted fue uno de los instructores más exigentes que tuve en la universidad… pero ¡viera cómo aprendí a escribir!”

“Usted hacía polvo mis textos, Sr, Ríos, pero gracias a usted aprendí cómo se escribe una composición”.

Por lo general no puedo acordarme de sus nombres, o reconocer todas las caras —lo que siempre me avergüenza ¿Quién sabe cuántos cientos de estudiantes pasaron por mis cursos durante treinta y tres años de hacer clases? Esto no quiere decir que mis estudiantes fuesen muy apegados a mí como profesor… ¡oh, no!

La mayoría se ha disuelto en una nube de mi memoria pero, curiosamente, hay los que sí recuerdo. Como aquel joven de Oklahoma que tomó mi curso de Literatura Chicana probablemente a fines de los 1970s. Era judío, en una clase predominantemente de alumnos chicanos. Extremadamente inteligente e informado, me di cuenta de inmediato lo que me esperaba ese semestre. Siempre me entusiasmaba de ver una cara no-hispana en una clase, pero eran cada vez menos los que duraban hasta el final del semestre. At first, I was admittedly put off by his criticism of the material, especially that which spoke of racism and discrimination. Mexicans and Chicanos were not the “only” ethnic group that was marginalized and discriminated against, he argued. Look at the Jews. How could any of us argue against that? Yet, soon enough, I began to see the value of his criticisms not just for me as the teacher, but for my students, and even encouraged him.

Best, his testy comments inspired even marginal students to venture forth responses to him; and I loved the dialogue! My only strategy was to explain to him that nowhere in the curriculum were Chicanos claiming they were the “only” ones who ever faced racism and discrimination and that it might be useful to him to learn of how the largest minority in the U.S. had experienced this.

It’s important for the other students to hear what you have to say because it challenges their complacency. Beside, you’re halfway through the semester. Won’t you please stay?” It worked and he stayed!

When the semester ended, he turned in his final exam and like most students, walked out the door without a word. I had hoped to shake his hand and muffle a soft “thank you for staying” but I wasn’t able to. I never saw

this young man again. I judged he had found the course (and me) insignificant and chalk it up to misfortune for having taken it.

But some years later, through a mutual friend, I heard from him again. She was attending CSUS, Stanislaus, and told me she had met a student whose teacher I had been at Delta College. “He speaks very highly of you and told me to say hello. He says you are the best teacher he ever had!” When I realized who she was talking about, I was confused, having convinced myself he probably believed I was the worst teacher he’d ever had!

On our next visit, my friend brought me a brief letter from the student. It went something like this: “Hello, Mr. Rios, I just want to tell you how much I learned from taking your class.

You are the BEST teacher I have ever had.

You challenged me to think outside of my preconceived views of the world and you didn’t settle for anything less than my best. I learned so much from you. Thanks again. I will never forget you.”

And so it goes. You win one, you lose one.

Yet, it’s these little things that we teachers never see coming that make us thankful we were given this noble path to walk. Who knows what seed was planted in what mind, that given the right conditions, soil, sunshine and nurturing, will not bloom into a fine flower.

En un principio admito que me molestó su crítica al material, especialmente el que hablaba de racismo y discriminación. Los mexicanos y chicanos no eran “el único” grupo que se marginaba y contra quien se discriminaba, afirmaba. Miren a los judíos ¿Cómo alguien podía argüir contra eso? No obstante, muy pronto comencé a ver relevancia en su crítica —no solo para mí como profesor, sino para mis estudiantes— por lo que empecé a alentarlo.

Lo mejor era que sus provocadores comentarios inspiraban hasta a los más reservados estudiantes a contestarle ¡y me encantaba el

diálogo! Mi única estrategia era explicarle que en parte ninguna del currículo se afirmaba que los chicanos eran los únicos que alguna vez se enfrentaron al racismo o discriminación, y que le sería educativo enterarse cómo la mayor minoría en los EEUU lo había experimentado.

No obstante, no resultó, porque a mediados de septiembre se apareció en mi oficina para informarme que dejaba el curso. “Me siento fuera de lugar, Sr. Ríos”, dijo, “soy yo contra ellos. A veces se me van todos encima”.

Le respondí diciendo, “Bueno, bienvenido a nuestro mundo. Es así como nosotros los chicanos, por generaciones, nos hemos sentido —siendo el único mexicano en clases de puros caucásicos”. Traté de convencerla de quedarse: “Escucha, tú eres, por lejos, el más inteligente de la clase y siempre estoy a la expectativa de tus comentarios. Es importante que los otros estudiantes escuchen lo que tú tienes que decir porque desafía su complacencia. Además, ya pasamos la mitad del semestre ¿Por qué no te quedas? Funcionó ¡Se quedó!

Cuando terminó el semestre, entregó su examen final como la mayoría de los estudiantes y salió sin decir palabra. Esperaba estrechar su mano y susurrar un “muchas gracias por quedarte” pero no pude. Nunca vi a ese joven de nuevo. Supuse que había hallado el curso (y yo) insignificante y lo descontó como un error de su parte haberlo tomado.

Pero algunos años más tarde, a través de una amiga común, supe de él. Ella estaba estudiando en la Estatal de Stanislaus y me dijo que había conocido a alguien que había sido estudiante mío en Delta College. “Habla con gran respeto por usted y me dijo que me lo saludara. Que era el mejor profesor que había tenido”. Cuando caí en la cuenta de quién era del que hablaba me sentí desorientado. Había concluido que probablemente pensaba ¡que yo fui el peor maestro que había tenido!

En nuestra próxima visita, mi amiga trajo una breve carta de aquel estudiante. Iba más o menos así: “Hola, Sr. Ríos, solo quiero que sepa cuánto aprendí por tomar su clase. Usted es el MEJOR maestro que he tenido. Me desafió a pensar fuera de mis perspectivas preconcebidas del mundo y no se conformó con nada menos que mi mejor esfuerzo. Aprendí tanto de usted. Gracias nuevamente. Nunca le olvidaré.”

Y así es la cosa. Ganas una y pierdes otra.

Y sí. Son estas pequeñas cosas las que los profesores nunca esperan las que te hacen agradecer de haber elegido esta noble senda para seguir. Quien sabe que semillas germinaron o en cual mente la que, dada las condiciones óptimas, tierra, sol y cuidado, florecerá en una bella flor.

Poción Autística: An Autistic Brew: Glifosato y Glyphosate and Triptófano Tryptophan Thomas Block, West Farmington, OH

l triptófano es un aminoácido natural. Como tal, es vital para la transcripción y funcionamiento del neurotransmisor, serotonina. Es el “precursor” de la serotonina, que cumple el papel de mantener el peso, y suprimir depresión y el mal de Alzheimer.

Como mecanismo integrante en la alteración de la función serotoninérgica en el autismo”, es también “un efectivo tratamiento para varios de los signos y síntomas de autismo”1.

La reducción del metabolismo de triptófano puede perjudicar el desarrollo del cerebro, la neuroinmunidad, y el funcionamiento mitocondrial.

Los humanos expuestos al glifosato revelan reducidos niveles de triptófano. Como consiste de otro aminoácido, la glicina, el glifosato actúa como “análogo” del aminoácido glicina y puede, “incorporado a las cadenas polipéptidas durante la síntesis proteínica” —impactando la estructura y función de proteínas— “la célula ya no puede funcionar normalmente, con consecuencias impredecibles resultantes en numerosas enfermedades y trastornos”2.

Luego de rociar las plantas con una mezcla de glifosato, esta quelatación compromete a los nutrientes de las plantas de manera que éstas pierden su capacidad de nutrirse y mueren, y los animales, humanos incluidos, que se alimentan de esas plantas, a su tiempo, contraen deficiencias de nutrientes —por ejemplo, zinc— y que resulta en un déficit inmunológico entre los niños4.

Otro estudio sugiere que la suplementación con vitamina B y magnesio en pacientes con autismo impacta su homeostasis (equilibrio) metabólico5 “...y es lógico asumir que el glifosato —al interferir en la secuencia— conllevará a una deficiencia en estos nutrientes”6.

Consisting of another amino acid, glycine, glyphosate acts as an “analogue” of the glycine amino acid and may be, “incorporated into polypeptide chains during protein synthesis”- impacting the structure and function of proteins – “the cell can no longer conduct business as usual causing unpredicted consequences with many diseases and disorders as a result”2.

This instability is recognized as “one of the main forces driving the onset and progression of carcinogenesis”2&3.

In plants, glyphosate inhibits the enzyme synthase of the aromatic amino acids, tryptophan, tyrosine, and phenylalanine. The shutting off of the synthesis of tryptophan results in the death of the plant. This stoppage is related to the original patenting of glyphosate by Stauffer Chemical in 1964 as a metal chelator to clean and descale minerals such as copper, zinc, calcium, iron, magnesium, etc. from boilers, tubs, and piping.

After spraying plants with a glyphosate compound, this chelation function binds nutrients in the plants so that the plants become nutrient deficient and then die and the animals, including man, that feed on those plants, in turn, suffer from a nutrient deficiency such as a zinc deficiency, for instance, that leads to immunological impairment in children4.

Another study suggested that supplementation with B vitamins and magnesium in autistic patients influenced metabolic homeostasis5 “...and it is logical that glyphosate, by interfering with this pathway, would lead to a deficiency in these nutrients”6.

In our stomachs, the microbes are seriously stressed causing inflammation in the gut and the imbalance of harmful bacteria over helpful bacteria. “There’s also an intricate connection between the gut and the brain, such that an unhealthy digestive system translates into pathologies in the brain.” And it is this characteristic of autistic children with pathogenic bacteria in the stomach that can cause their neurological problems (Ibid).

If we would inject the same scientistic methodology (mind you, not scientific methodology) that is employed by agrochemical mogul Monsanto, we could easily conclude, using a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.985 (1.0 would be perfect alignment) between autism and glyphosate over the past 20 years7, that exposure to glyphosate definitely causes autism.

A nd why shou ld Thomas Block we accept Monsanto’s West Farmington,OH weight- of-evidence methodology (a procedure used in the financial and credit industries to predict the risk of loan default) to scientifically prove no causation between glyphosate and many disruptions in the human body8? We first see the weight-ofevidence admission in Williams, Kroes, and Munro’s Safety Evaluation and Risk Assessment of the Herbicide Roundup and Its Active Ingredient, Glyphosate, for Humans in 2000.

Of course, we don’t know for sure if those three authors truly accepted the use of this ‘informal’ weight-of-evidence or if Monsanto ghostwrote the use of weight-of-evidence in that paper. Or how, if Bayer and BASF influenced the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) to reject the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)’s conclusion, that glyphosate is a probable carcinogen, again using weight-of-evidence as part of their refutation. decades, scientism has become accepted and confused with science! Perhaps the rejection of science by some Republicans has a rationale?

During the Reagan and Bush administrations, a lax “coordinated framework” was adopted for the regulation of genetically modified (GM) crops, “influenced” by agribusiness. It was in this period that the entrada of agribusiness into U.S. government executive agencies such as the EPA, the USDA, and the FDA commenced in earnest.

In the Obama era, the surrender of the EPA, USDA, and FDA oversight to corporate encroachment resulted in big agriculture’s disregard of the National Environmental Policy Act and permitted the biotech firms to conduct their own reviews and hire their own private labs encouraging agribusiness to corrupt and redefine scientific methodology!

Despite all efforts to disguise it, glyphosate and tryptophan are a dangerous autistic brew and, as long as this combination remain in our food intake, autism will too.

Para 1878 había suficientes jugadores e interés público como para que se organizaría una liga profesional en Cuba, a menos de una década de la primera norteamericana.

Los primeros peloteros profesionales extranjeros en los EEUU de la Era Jim Crow eran cubanos blancos. La popularidad del béisbol se extendió con la expansión norteamericana post 1900. La Diplomacia de las Cañoneras envolvió al Caribe (especialmente a Puerto Rico y la República Dominicana) y las inversiones norteamericanas extendieron el deporte aún más allá —a la industria petrolera venezolana y las plantaciones bananeras a través de la región.

Después que Jackie Robinson abriese la puerta a los peloteros de color, la primera y verdadera ola de jugadores extranjeros también provino de Cuba, con más de cuarenta peloteros que llegaron a los EEUU en los 1940s y 1950s. Los triunfos de Minnie Minoso, Camilo Pascual, Sandy Amoros y otros abrieron firmemente la entrada a otros isleños.

Para principios de los 1960s los tres Tonys (Pérez, Taylor y Oliva), Luis Tiant y Mike Cuellar estaban entre las mayores estrellas, mientras que Orlando Cepeda y Juan Marichal pasaron a ser los primeros inmortales.

La Revolución Cubana intentó cortar el flujo de jugadores cubanos, pero los Castro nunca pudieron detener a todos. Luego que el presidente Obama ayudase a aflojar las barreras no fue sorpresa que se alcanzase un nuevo récord anual de cubanos (23) en 2017.

En el ínterin la popularidad de nuestro deporte nacional continúa profundizándose, especialmente en México, Centroamérica y el Caribe.

Curiosamente, durante las muchas Series Mundiales y otros encuentros de béisbol que he mirado mientras vivía o visitaba amigos en Panamá, Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, Canadá, Curazao, República Dominicana, y México nunca los escuché cuestionando que se llamaran Series Mundiales.
