Qualifications/Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for sandblasting and servicing rail cars, tank trailers and other containers and vessels(primarily internal). This involves being able to abrade surface of metals or hard compostition objects to remove adhering scale, paint, grease, tar, rust, dirt, etc. to impart finish using abrasive-blasting equipment. Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper. Masks specified areas or objects to protect form abrading action. Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle. Must be able to follow written and oral directions involving checking work orders and shipping documents to determine contents, and performing job safety analysis. Must be able to work in confined spaces, wear full face respirator and chemical protective suits plus perform oxygen content, ph, and toxicity tests.
Qualifications Include: High school degree or equivalent with minimum two (2) years experience internal blasting of rail cars.

PREPARE A PORTFOLIO
When you’re looking for your first job as a teacher, traditional career advice is often of little use.
EXPAND YOUR TEACHABLE SUBJECT AREAS
For example, traditional job-seeking advice recommends submitting an application to many different potential employers, but in the education field there is often only one major employer (the local public school board) in any given area. Similarly, while other fields are likely to hire new employees year-round, nearly all new teachers are offered jobs within the two-month window between May and June. If you miss that window, you could find yourself waiting another year to get hired.
Depending on the jurisdiction in which you work, you may end up teaching subjects beyond those that you student during your teacher training program. Research the school board where you’re applying and find out if they are lacking teachers for a specific subject. Could you draw on your second language skills, technical training or personal interests to meet the rising demand for teachers in specialty subject areas?
A picture is worth a thousand words. If you’re lucky enough to get an interview for a teaching position, you can stand out from the other interviewees by having a teaching portfolio on hand. Inside, you should have samples of assignments and assessments that you have created, photos of activities you led while student teaching or while volunteering, and copies of any relevant certifications (like First Aid or CPR). As you’re answering questions during the interview, support your responses with examples from the portfolio.
So what should a prospective teacher do to move their application to the top of the pile?

In some school districts, vacant positions are mainly filled through word of mouth. Reach out to everyone you know who may have connections in a school and let them know that you’re looking for work. Don’t be afraid to contact your old elementary and secondary teachers, the schools where you did your student teaching, your university professors and even your parents’ friends. If any of your networking leads to an interview (or a job!) make sure to write a hand-written thank you note to your contact person.
Every recruiter knows that teaching can be messy. If it’s not a glue gun disaster then it’s spilled chocolate milk (or worse... a very runny nose!). It’s tempting to fill your wardrobe with comfortable, washable, business casual clothing, and those are usually fine for the classroom. But when you score an interview for a teaching job, you need to dress like a professional. For men, this means a suit and tie. For women, a blouse, blazer and skirt or dress pants is recommended.
Start by following these five tips that will make it easier to get that first teaching job.
VOLUNTEER FIRST When it comes to teaching, experience working with children is paramount. Every application that Human Resources receive will include some student teaching experience. You can stand out by showing that you’ve worked with children in other ways. Consider volunteering as a camp counselor, at a local recreation center, through the public library or with a religious organization. This will show the recruiter that you’re able to work with children of different ages and in different contexts.

WANTED: Baby Boomer Today, there is a greater demand for teachers nationwide than there has been in many years. Of course, there is not an equal demand for every teacher in every specialty, but there is a tremendous need for teachers precisely because so many baby boomers are leaving the teaching profession due to retirement. This development, in turn, offers a great opportunity for other men and women, who are also baby boomers, to take those positions from the retiring teachers.
Teachers!
Let me give you an example. A person who came into the picture as a substitute high school math teacher for our then junior in high school the following year joined the staff of Woodstock High School and became a full-time math teacher in her late 50s. I believe this is the type of transition our nation will see happen with greater frequency all across America.
And while the individual paycheck may not be significant relative to private industry, public sector pensions for teachers are really excellent. For example, the formula in the State of Missouri for a retired teacher is 80% of your previous income after 30 years of service. Teachers are paid a salary based upon their education level, with the max pay level probably being a Master’s degree plus 30 hours. In my own circle, I have a good friend in St. Louis, who earned a Master’s degree plus 30 hours, and let us estimate that he retired at $60,000 in annual income from his Suburban St. Louis position. His retirement at 30 years would be 80% of that figure. However, since he actually worked 33 years, the percentage on the retirement formula was 88%. So, by taking 88% of $60,000, my friend made approximately $52,800 per year, which began at age 55. Please bear in mind that teachers throughout our nation do NOT qualify for Social Security. So this becomes both a substitute for Social Security and a private pension added together. But, if someone goes back to school and they qualify to become a teacher in their 40s, they could still work for the next 20 or 25 years. In other words, taking my mother’s case as an example, age 45 + 25 years = age 70. The school districts, in turn, want good teachers, so they may continue to extend that teacher’s contract even beyond the normal retirement point, if it’s appropriate in a unique circumstance.

One of my best friends from St. Louis retired as a public school teacher in mathematics after a 33 year career in a suburban high school. But, his real love has always been music over the years. So each week, he takes a one hour lesson on the mandolin and a one hour lesson on the guitar. Then, at the local junior college during both the fall and spring semesters, he teaches a class on guitar. He said he doesn’t make much money doing 24, it, but 2017it’s very gratifying to him on an emotional level. 46 MARCH

Individual men and women may also feel the call to ministry later in life. That scenario pertained to my own father and my wife. My father went to seminary and graduated in his mid 40s and went on to a longer term career in the ministry. My book, “Now What? Discovering Your New Life and Career After 50,” contains 19 profiles, one of which is of my 85 year old father. My Dad is literally the senior associate pastor -- senior meaning oldest -- on the staff of St. Louis Family Church, which is perhaps the largest Protestant church in the Greater St. Louis area. Ministry today is actually a common career track for men and women, as we get older. This happens with Catholic priests, it happens in the Protestant clergy and it happens in the Jewish clergy as well. My wife is also an ordained pastor, who is a full-time minister in charge of Fresh Harvest Church in Woodstock, Illinois and who is also the point person for Fresh Harvest Ministries. She is also involved with a ministry organization, which has a call to our nation and is located in Washington D.C.

I am also a member of the McHenry County College Fitness Center, which has every kind of conceivable exercise machine you can imagine from rowing machines to stationary bicycles to treadmills to a cross country ski apparatus, as well as all sorts of different weight-related machines. MCC’s Fitness Center employs fitness coaches, who have degrees, and these trainers come in all different ages. The oldest one, who once served as a coach for one of the Olympic teams, is today in his 70s. But, he still works on a part-time basis at McHenry County College in the fitness center. I believe fitness should be one part of the transition we pursue, as we get older. In fact, many of the people in my exercise group, who work out three to five days per week at the same time in the early morning, when I use the facility, are actually in their late 60s, 70s or even 80s. The name of this group is “the Wild Bunch,” where I am perhaps the youngest person in the group. Of course, it is always good to be “the youngest,” no matter how the group is defined. WHAT DO YOU DO?
I’m part of a team of high school counselors. Together, we provide a comprehensive school counseling program that includes career, academic, and social and emotional services for all the students at our school. We’re usually the first line of defense to make sure students get the services they need. We’re their mentor, their advisor, and their confidant. We make sure they have the resources to do whatever they wish to accomplish. I’ll meet with students individually to make sure that they’re emotionally OK, feel motivated to do well in class, and have a plan for the future. I try to get students to think about what interests them and how they can make that interest into a career and be successful once they leave school. If they don’t plan to go to college, I make sure they have a résumé and consider alternatives, like a certificate.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR SERVICES.
At least once a semester, each counselor teaches a lesson. We don’t have a classroom, which means we’re taking up scheduled instructional time, so we try to tie in our lessons with the teacher’s curriculum. I might help students write a résumé, sharpen their job interview skills, learn how to form healthy relationships, and so on. The team also coordinates a bunch of activities, including parentteacher conferences and college visits. And we help with crisis response and find special accommodations for students who need that.
WHAT’S YOUR TYPICAL SCHEDULE?
It depends on the school district. My contract is from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., but I don’t know anyone in education who leaves at 3. Usually, I’m here until 3:30 or 4 p.m. During events, I might be here until 10 p.m. And if there’s a standardized test, I might come in early.
HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR THIS JOB?
I have a master’s degree in education and school counseling. My master’s program lasted 2 years and covered K12 education. I learned counseling techniques for all school ages, for both individuals and groups. My program also required a semesterlong internship, which lets you get experience at a specific school level. To work at the high school level, I needed a clear understanding of college and career readiness. The goal in a high school is to help students successfully contribute to society, so I had to learn to be a leader and advocate for my students.
WHAT OTHER SKILLS DO SCHOOL COUNSELORS NEED?
It’s important to really listen and empathize. If you don’t like people, counseling might not be the right career for you. Most students want someone to listen but may have a hard time expressing what they’re feeling. School counselors are trained specifi-

cally to foster an open environment, which helps students know that we’re here to help them. We want to give them space to tell us what’s going on and get to know them better.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I get to work with students daily, and every counselor will tell you that’s the best part of the job. Being able to see my students grow, mature, and become confident over 4 years makes me proud. I also like that I’m never quite sure what a day might be like. There’s a lot of variety every day, as I tailor things to what each student needs. Or I might collaborate with professionals in my school, district, town, or somewhere else in the country. People are really open and willing to share tips and experiences.
WHAT DO YOU FIND CHALLENGING ABOUT THE WORK?
It’s difficult to manage the sheer number of students we’re responsible for. Sometimes, extra responsibilities are put on my plate, which detracts from the time I can spend with students. It’s also hard to watch a student struggle. You get close to the students, so it can be emotionally draining because you want to fix the problem and know you can’t. That’s a difficult part of the job, but it comes with it. And you do feel good when students and families get through issues.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR ASPIRING SCHOOL COUNSELORS?
Attend as many professional development opportunities as you can. This helps expand your network so you can reach out to people for support and ideas. The first year, in particular, is overwhelming, and you’re just trying to survive. If you surround yourself with positive people, they’ll help you stay afloat. Also, get involved in your school. Volunteer to chaperone a dance, for example, or attend student plays. That makes students and parents more comfortable with you and more likely to come to you when they need help. We need the right people, people who truly want to help students. You have to constantly think of how to be better because you’re doing it for them. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A DEAL BREAKER Dear Dave, One of my relatives just graduated from college with $20,000 in student loan debt. Her boyfriend graduated, too, and he has over $100,000 in student loan debt. They want to get married, so she’s looking for a job. He wants to go to graduate school, and take out more loans to remain a full-time student. The idea of even more debt hanging over their heads really bothers her. Do you have any advice?
- Denise Dear Denise, You don’t throw away a great, potentially lifelong, relationship just because of debt. Things like laziness, dishonesty, and irresponsible behavior are deal breakers, though. Those are flaws that usually don’t go away. I’m glad she’s looking for a job, but her boyfriend needs to be working, too. There’s no excuse for either of them being full-time students with more than $120,000 in combined student loan debt hanging over their heads. Lots of people hold down real jobs, save money, and further their educations on a part-time basis. If she were my niece, I would encourage her to have an open and honest discussion with her boyfriend about their future, and how he plans on paying for graduate school. She also needs to be very real about her feelings in this situation. If, after that, he still wants to just borrow more money and not work outside of school, then she might have a difficult decision ahead. However, if he realizes how damaging additional debt could be to their relationship, and he’s willing to work while continuing his education, I think their future together looks much brighter.

YOU SKIPPED ONE! Dear Dave, My husband and I heard about your plan, but we’re not sure what to do next. We have between $400,000 and $500,000 in a 401(k) for retirement, but we don’t have any other savings. We’re both in our forties, and the only debt we have is our house, so what should we do about Baby Steps 4 and 6? - Mary Dear Mary, Overall, you two have done a great job with your money. Let’s go over the Baby Steps you mentioned. Baby Step 4 is putting 15 percent of your income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement plans. Baby Step 6 is paying off your home early. The thing that worries me is you’ve completely skipped Baby Step 3, which is having three to six months of expenses in an emergency fund. This is money set aside strictly for emergencies. The problem right now is if you have a real emergency, you may have to cash out your 401(k). If you do that, you’re going to be penalized 10 percent, plus your tax rate. That’s a real kick in the teeth just because you didn’t do things in the right order. My advice is to temporarily stop your 401(k) contributions until you get a fully funded emergency fund in place. By temporarily, I mean six to eight months at most. That way, you’ll be covered when life happens without having make a big dent in your retirement savings! — Dave
