How To Leverage Your Experience In Today’s Coronavirus Job Market To Get Hired by Robin Ryan Whether you are still working, want a new job or are unemployed and looking, you have a wealth of experience and wisdom to offer employers. Boomers have lived through bad times before. You have seen an economy with high unemployment. Ok, so maybe not this high, but certainly high. Think back to the bad economic times you have faced at work. Maybe your industry was in trouble in the past. What was that like? Who survived? What companies prospered? What did they do to get ahead in the bad economy?

Remember 9/11. Did your employer suffer significant losses as a result? Who was the company that came out a winner? Then there was the financial crisis and the Great Recession. We got through that, but how? Who came up with new services or products? What about charities. What did they do to keep their mission going? Write down on paper what helped. What emerged? Can any of those tactics or strategies help now? Millennials and Gen Z have not lived through these tough times, and their perspective is much different from yours. Jobvite conducted the 2020 Job Seeker Nation Report stating that 47% percent of workers are now afraid of losing a job at some point this year. It is a scary time for many. Millennials and Generation Z are scared out of their minds. To them, the world is ending. They do not have the resilience you do. They can’t see beyond this pandemic. Boomers can look ahead, feeling more assured that in a few years from now, things will improve. Millennials and Gen Z’s view of the world comes from their narrow range of experience centered on good economic times. They have not lived through lousy economies. They also have not had to reinvent themselves a few times, like most of the Boomers have. You are different. You can offer something that they don’t have – perspective, strategy, ideas, and paths out. In this midst of this adversity, lies an opportunity for you if you are a Baby Boomer. The Arizona’s Children Association found themselves in a major dilemma. They serve children, youth, and families providing services that were delivered in person. “That had to change dramatically,” says Barbara Krusko, Chief Development Officer. A Baby Boomer herself, Krusko helped her department and the organization implement some new strategies to aid their families. First, she asked everyone inside the organization for their ideas. New online telehealth and virtual visits using video conferencing were immediately implemented. Next came the need to raise money. In the past, the organization would talk to donors in face-to-face events. Now that wasn’t possible. The remote team came up with new ways to reach donors. They used Facebook live, email, and social media. They went back to some old-fashioned techniques, like handwritten notes. The organization reached out to the media to try to get the word out. Krusko’s department launched an

16

JUNE 2020

emergency fund and reached out to potential donors and existing donors about the urgent need to help the families in ways they had not done before. The organization established an Amazon Wish List that any potential donor could go to and buy items like diapers, cereal, and baby food to support these families. Then those products go to the association for immediate distribution. The organization also took a leading role with families needing help with rent, and getting computers so that students could stay in school. Krusko said, “Our teams really have been innovative. The ideas came from every person inside the organization. I’m proud to say we have done some amazing things to help the children and families. Our team members came up with new solutions that are making a difference and allowing us to meet the needs of our population during this crisis.”

Think about employers’ pain points

As you look at different companies or new industries, you need to determine what are an employer’s pain points now? Have they lost business? How can they successfully rebuild? Do they need new products or a different product mix? What might those be? Are the services they offer what people need now? Do you have to change and provide different marketing messages than they had months ago? Can you create new partnerships that would be a solution? Think about what needs to change in this new recession normal. If you are a nonprofit, what has or needs to happen to your major fundraising event? How can you reach out to donors? What ways worked when times weren’t good? Look on the internet. Reconnect with former colleagues and bosses. Talk about the problems and discuss possible solutions. Gather and list ideas that you can discuss with an employer. You must be able to discuss the employer’s problems and then offer up how you can solve some of their issues.

Be a beacon of hope

The news is very negative right now. Some people can’t even listen anymore because it is so overwhelming. They hear one message: people are sick, and some are dying. That scares them. You should not focus the negative news. Instead, you need to look for the positive things people are doing. For example, maybe it’s moving to an online service. Or it could be a new product an entrepreneur just designed that you saw on Facebook. Some people are finding ways to solve today’s business problems. So what have you noticed? Can you find a positive solution to share with others? You will want to tell an employer or future boss what you have observed and offer up how you can assist the employer with positive ideas. Purposely focus on what is a positive or novel VOL. 25 ISSUE 1239

solution. You might see a new revenue stream going forward. Be innovative in your problem-solving. Don’t be the person drowning in the cynical saying, “I don’t know what to do” and throw your hands up in the air.

Share your wisdom

What are the personality traits that make you – you? Right now, we need optimism. Resilience and optimism. Think about your skills and the work tasks you do. Make a list and determine the aspects that can best help an employer. Do you have analytical skills? Look at the financials and think about ways that the company can move forward. Are you in Sales? What products will people need? What might they want and still be willing to spend their money on? You need to be coaching those around about a more positive outcome and an improved future. For example, many CEOs say that a crisis often allows your company to gain market share. How? A crisis forces the employees to get innovative, and through these people come new ideas, products, and ways to attract more customers. You want to be an enthusiastic team member. Just as fear is contagious, so is optimism and hope.

Keep in mind that younger workers are terrified. You, baby boomer, are not that scared. You have seen this tough cycle before. You know we’ll get past this pandemic. Some companies will survive; others will not. You know that is life, and nothing is prosperous forever. As one company ends, new companies arise. They’ll bring new business services and products, and they’ll thrive. You want to sell yourself as being part of the solution, not adding to the doom and gloom.

Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y

Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money & business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey & on the web at daveramsey.com.

THOSE CONVINCED AGAINST THEIR WILL… Dear Dave, I’m debt-free except for my home, and it is all because I started following your plan four years ago. I’m even on track to pay off my mortgage in eight years. With all the scary economic news out there, I’d love to talk to my family about following your advice, too. Do you have any suggestions for doing this without sounding like a know-it-all or that I am bragging? Lacey Dear Lacey, It’s been my experience that when it comes to family, words don’t always do the trick. There’s an old saying that goes, “Those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still.” Some people have been brainwashed into believing credit cards and debt are an unavoidable part of life. They’re stuck in their ways, and nothing anyone can say or do is going to change that. I’ve been fortunate enough to help millions of people change their lives, get out of debt, and take control of their finances. But there are millions more who will never listen. They’ll just keep going deeper and deeper into debt, and never realize the real problem is the person they see in the mirror every morning. The truth is, you can make irrefutable arguments against credit cards. People who use them spend more than those who use cash or debit cards. Research has proven this. You don’t need one to rent a car, get a hotel room, or buy airline tickets. A debit card will do all those things without piling up debt. For an emergency fund, you can simply save up cash. It takes some discipline and hard work, but relying on credit when things go wrong is a really bad idea. It’s a trap. If they won’t listen to all these truths, try telling them your story. Let them know you understand from experience how hard breaking old habits can be. Emphasize how amazing your life has been since you made the decision to actively control your money, instead allowing a lack of money to control you. Congratulations, Lacey. I’m proud of you for working so hard and being disciplined. I hope you can be an influence on others in your family, and help lead them to a place of financial peace, too! —Dave

VOL. 25 ISSUE 1239

RESPONSIBILITIES COME FIRST Dear Dave, My husband runs a small business that has never done very well. We have three kids, and I make $55,000 annually in my job. Part of what I make has been going into the business for over a year to help keep it afloat, and we don’t have a lot of money in savings. What do you think we should do? Stephanie

EXAMINE YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS CAREFULLY Dear Dave, I own a small company, and we lease the building we operate from. As an entrepreneur, how do you know when it is time to stop leasing and buy a place of your own? Peter

Dear Stephanie,

Dear Peter,

If you’re putting other money into a business account, that’s a pretty good sign you’re not making money in the business. You and your husband need to sit down together, and do a household budget and a profit and loss statement on the business. You’ve got to get on the same page financially.

You should only buy a building when you have solid track record of success, and a really good idea of what your building needs will be. A growing business is always a good thing, but you don’t want to focus too much on real estate and not enough on generating revenue and managing that growth intelligently. You would also want to make sure you’re going to be in anything you buy for a good, long while.

Put all his business expenses on the profit and loss statement in detail, and write out what it would take for him to break even each month. But honestly, with everything that’s been going on with your finances, if he’s not at least breaking even at this point, then it’s time for him to do something else for a living full-time. I’m an entrepreneur and business owner. Trust me, I totally understand the allure and excitement that goes with running your own business. But your own household and its immediate financial responsibilities come first. The only money that should go into the business account is income the business creates. —Dave

I’m a big fan of leasing the first few years after starting your own business. It’s even better if you can work out of your home, but I understand that’s not always practical. Down the road, you can choose to lease with an option to buy, or in the right situation, just buy a building. Remember, make sure you do it all with cash. Don’t add debt to the equation! —Dave

IS IT EVER TOO LATE?

NO FREE PASSES

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

Life insurance is one of those things I always said I would get around to buying someday, but for various reasons I just haven’t done it yet. Is there ever a time when it is too late to get life insurance?

I own a small business, and recently a relative asked for a job with the company. I hate to say this, but I’ve got reservations about hiring her. She’s basically a good kid, but not the most reliable person in the world. Do you have any advice on how to handle a situation like this? Bill Dear Bill, As an entrepreneur, you have the right and responsibility to do what’s best for your company. That means you shouldn’t hire anyone who isn’t a good fit—even a relative. If a relative is qualified, and the kind of person who understands they’ll have to bring it every single day, performing at a level equal to or above your other team members, that can be a special and rewarding thing. But if that relative is the kind of person who expects special treatment or is a problem child, that kind of situation can be a nightmare for you, your company, and the whole family.

Angie Dear Angie, First of all, I only recommend level term life insurance. It’s fairly easy to get until around age 70, depending on your overall health situation. Once you get into your seventies and beyond, however, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced coverage. I recommend that most people have 10 to 12 times their annual income in term life insurance. To be honest, though, you really shouldn’t need life insurance if you’re 70 or older. At that point, if you’ve saved and invested wisely over the years, you can be selfinsured. By this, I mean you’ve got enough money in savings and investments to cover funeral expenses—plus enough for a spouse to live on comfortably after you’re gone. Don’t wait any longer, Angie. Take care of this today! —Dave

Would you hire this person because they’d make a good team member? Would you hire this person if they weren’t part of the family? If the answer to either of these questions is no, don’t hire them. It’s as simple as that. The bottom line is you have to do what’s best for your business, your immediate family, and your team. VOL. 25 ISSUE 1239 —Dave

TAPPING INTO THE POWER OF

Cr e a t iv e Th in k in g

DURING COVID-19 By Regina Jingles

Benjamin Franklin, a Founding Father, politician, philosopher and scientist among other titles, once stated that there were two certainties in life: death and taxes. To that, I would add the concept of: “change.” The arrival of the coronavirus or COVID-19, has ushered in unprecedented change on a global scale. Most of us are experiencing a wide range of emotions from anger and confusion to sadness and unexpected gratitude during this time. The emotions we’re feeling are all valid and unique to our particular situation. This pandemic has everyone from employees and CEOs, parents and school teachers, to world leaders and ordinary citizens being forced to “get creative” as we deal with this crisis. None of us are immune from the concept of change. Look around and you will notice how individuals and organizations applying “creative thinking” to everything from masks and face shields to new forms of teaching and connecting. How are you dealing with the concept of “change?” As a freelance yoga instructor, I’d like to share two very important concepts that are often taught in a yoga class and could be helpful during this time of job uncertainty: the need to “be still” and “breathing.” Let’s start with the first one: “Be Still” Despite the chaos around us, now is the time to “be still” and evaluate our current situation before making the kind of changes that can have far-reaching consequences. Whether we are employed or not, now is the time to: --work on developing new skills that can aid in finding work, maintaining the job we have or creating new entrepreneurial opportunities; --improve our social media presence that can aid in finding new work, gaining connections and building our influence; --eliminate any and all expenses that interfere with our selfimprovement goals; --improve healthy habits one day-at-a-time while eliminating harmful ones; --read empowering business books that will allow us to develop rewarding side-hustles; --allow our minds to still “dream and wonder” through the enjoyment of uplifting stories, music and art. If you’re an employer, now is the time to: --let your employees, suppliers and other facets of your business, how much you value them and reward them appropriately; Continued on page 28 VOL. 25 ISSUE 1239

Continued from page 27 --to implement systems that allow you to maintain a presence so that you can “bounce back” when this pandemic ends and keep it going; --to improve your social profile with recommendations, case studies and new updates; --research unexplored target markets to gauge profitability; --to work with non-profits and other charitable organizations in the “spirit of giving.” “Change” whether brought on abruptly or not, has a way of inspiring creative thinking. We have all been suddenly forced to move from “auto-pilot” to “thinking on our feet.” Tapping into the power of “creative thinking” is available to us all irrespective of the things that often divide us. The present-day rulebooks are being rewritten as we speak. Let us now consider the second concept that is taught in yoga: “breathing.” Breath is vital. Breath is energy. Breath is calming. We all need to take a “deep breath” and allow ourselves to let the emotions “come up and out” so that we can act freely to create “positive change” in our lives in ways that work for us in the present and for the future. We have to move from doing things on a “shallow” level and “go deep” especially as it applies to relationships, jobs and our health.

28

JUNE 2020

With the world “on pause,” now is the perfect opportunity to become proactive without worrying about societal expectations that can cause “impostor syndrome.” Our talents and gifts are needed now more than ever. It’s up to us to work in environments where it will be appreciated and compensated. Consider the flower: Before a plant blooms, it grows in the “dark” soaking in air, water and nutrients until it is ready to bloom on a timetable of its own making. This is our time to “bloom” despite the “darkness” around us. Yes, I know that sounds rather “simplistic” but now is the time to explore creative ways of “thinking” and apply it to every facet of our lives without worrying about the critics whether from family, friends and co-workers to the hesitation from our own minds. This is critical whether we are employees or a business owner. So remember, “be still and breathe deeply.” Afterwards, “go forth and bloom.” Are you ready?

How To Manage Workplace Stress Dealing With The Coronavirus Pandemic

Continued from page 8

This morning, Laura called inquiring about career counseling services and wanting to look for a new job. She started out talking about how stressful her work was right now and that her husband was going through surgery today, and she needed to take time off to help him. An event planner, Laura felt so much anxiety over all the work problems compounded by the coronavirus and the need to keep her husband safe. He’s over 60, and she is 57. A large part of her job is planning special events, and these events needed to be canceled and rescheduled months from now. Contacting the venues and the speakers plus handling all of the tasks required had her anxiety so high that she thought for sure she was going to have a panic attack. She admitted that the stress level was the highest that it’s ever been. Many people at her work were freaking out, and that wasn’t helping at all. She felt the answer was looking for a less stressful job. Dr. Richard Citrin is an organizational psychologist who also holds an MBA and is the author of The Resilience Advantage: Stop Managing Stress and Find Your Resilience. “To manage your stress is impossible to do. It’s your body reacting to your environment. You need to recognize the stress, then work with it and learn how to deal with it,” says Citrin. “I’m not a fan of social distancing. We need physical distancing, but not social distancing. We should socialize and reach out and make connections. Right now, you may need to use FaceTime or Skype to see people you care about. We need to be more socially connected now and not more isolated. Citrin offers some advice on dealing with stress in these tough times. You are resilient. The stress in the workplace right now can feel overwhelming, so ask yourself, what do I need to do to get a handle on it? How can I problem solve and make things better? Resilience is hardwired into us. You need to tap into this trait to get some control over your life. Navigate through life in real-time, and tell yourself I’ll bounce-back or better still, bounce forward. Learn to work remotely. If you are a manager of employees who are new to remote work, reach out and check in with them a couple of times a day. They don’t have a routine down yet and may feel guilty or like they’re cheating if they take a break. Managers need to set expectations and suggest a routine to do the work. Discuss the need to take time to have lunch or to go outside for a little walk. Offer ideas that will help your employees to better manage this whole new routine of working from home. As a worker, you need to create an environment of control for yourself so that you’re able to handle that you may be working from home for a while. Let employees know you care. You want to have an open-door policy right now, and that translates to telling your employees, “let’s talk.” A manager can help the employee feel like you are there for them. Be transparent with what you know. You will increase loyalty and retention as a byproduct because of your concern. People want something to hold onto right now. The company is a great thing to anchor to. Talk to your employees about what they can do to reach out to customers. It’s customers that you’re going

38

JUNE 2020

VOL. 25 ISSUE 1239

to want to keep or get back once the economic climate changes. So help your employees. Coach them, mentor them. Self-care is key. Do whatever you can to take good care of yourself. Get a good night's sleep. Exercise is important. The gym’s closed? Try doing a YouTube video for Pilates, yoga, or Tai Chi. Go outside and go for a walk. Listen to upbeat music. Eat as healthy as you can. Connect to your friends and family. It would help if you had social connection right now. You’ll have more time on your hands, so consider learning a new hobby. All those home projects you’ve been putting on hold, get them off your to-do list. Erik Gabrielson, a consultant and co-author of the new book, Our Fear Never Sleeps, says, “Fear is predominant in just nearly everyone right now. We need to give our employees the skillset to manage stress and to be able to navigate all the uncertainty. We need to individually and collectively take aligned action in the face of the coronavirus fear,” he noted. Gabrielson offers several things you and your company can do to try to handle stress better during this challenging time. Acknowledge that our biology, the amygdala, is in overdrive to keep us safe. You can’t control what is happening around you, but you can control how you respond to it. Get to a place of acceptance. This does not mean agreement, but you must accept reality as it is happening. Company leaders and managers need to offer support and tell employees you have their back. Right now, employees are scared that they might get sick, their family might get sick, and ultimately they are worried their work hours will be cut, or they will lose their jobs. Your role as a leader is to help support them and reassure them that everything is going to be okay. Stress that the company has this under control in terms of taking care of its employees. It understands if you have to balance working from home and childcare. In Laura’s case, her employer needs to realize that she has to balance the needs of a sick husband and her workload. Share something you are grateful for. Focus on the positive it keeps you away from all the negative reports that can put you and employees in a place of fear. For example, a manager can start a conference call or online meeting with each person saying, “Tell us one thing there grateful for you.” Offer an example, such as “I’m grateful that my family is healthy.” Or “I’m grateful for friends who are supporting me now.” The best way to manifest the idea of gratitude is to acknowledge people around you. Ask friends and neighbors if they need any help. One example was a person who posted on Facebook and said, “Hey, I’m healthy. I can go to the grocery store. I can go pick up prescriptions at the pharmacy. I can even cook you dinner if you need it.” By focusing on the positive things that you can do to help others that will help you. Act compassionately towards others. Many baby boomers are managers out there, and they need to take over the role and inquire about how each member of their team is really doing. Don’t try to plow through the work. Touch base with the person and get them to talk about what they’re thinking and worried about. Showing compassion and empathy during this time is critical. Now is the time to be a champion inside your organization so that the employees feel like they’re not alone, and the company does care about them. “Eventually,” Citrin reassures, “we will get through this, and it will get better.” This article originally appeared on Forbes. © 2020 Robin Ryan all rights reserved.
