Tips For Getting and Keeping Up With A Second Job

I'm going to start this by providing a real life case scenario of a friend of mine who has been working two jobs for the past four years. The tips for getting and keeping up with a second job will actually be conclusions withdrawn from this example. Let's call this friend of mine James. The Example James' first job was in real estate, to be more specific, he was (and still is) a field agent for a real estate company in a big city. Evidently, this job requires him to drive around the town and show his clients various properties, negotiating prices, persuading them to purchase, closing deals and taking care of specific paperwork. Now, since he has always been gifted with the pencil and also has a degree in graphic design, he took his second job at a Manga magazine, as a character graphic designer. His first job, as a real estate agent, is a full-time job, 5 days a week, 9 hours a day, with a one hour lunch time break. For his second job, as a graphic designer, he works 6 hours per working day, and 8 hours on each Saturday. Therefore, he is still free on Sundays, to spend quality time with his family. When I asked him how can he keep up with both two jobs, he replied that he considers his second job as a break from the first job. That the work as a designer relaxes him by a lot and he couldn't be happier with another job than that. Obviously, he made a wise decision when he took the second job. Now, based on this example, here are a few tips regarding the choosing and keeping up with a second job. The Tips

Consider the risks, downsides and benefits of a second job. Obviously the main risk regarding this matter are extreme fatigue, and the primary downside is the lack of time for other activities. The main benefit is the extra cash. So, before even selecting a second job, you should ask yourself a couple of questions. For example: • •

Will I have enough time to spend with my family? Will I have enough time to sleep?

I’m beginning to think we got in over our heads with our house. My wife and I make about $125,000 a year combined, but we’ve never been able to put anything aside for an emergency fund. Our mortgage payment is 35 percent of our take home pay each month. We have two young children, so we eat out a lot, but we have no debt other than our house. Do you think we should refinance our home?
I have around $15,000 in a Roth IRA. I just recently started studying your advice, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to cash it out and put the money toward debt.

I teach people to stop investing temporarily while they attack their debt. So, I wouldn’t add anything to it at this point, but the worst thing you could do is cash it out. If you do, taxes and penalties will steal a huge chunk of that cash. The only time I take money out of a retirement account to pay off debt is to avoid bankruptcy or foreclosure.
Dear Jeff, You two are making good money, and you’re debt-free except for your home. You can’t tighten up your budget enough to save up an emergency fund? Stay out of restaurants, dude! There’s no law stating you have to eat out a lot just because there are kids in the house. I mean, you’ve got no emergency fund. That’s a pretty basic thing. You guys need to get on a written, detailed plan, and start hitting your goals. I’m talking about a strict, monthly budget. Now, I’ll admit your mortgage payment isn’t exactly what I would’ve signed you up for. Your house payments, or rent, should be no more than 25 percent of your monthly take home pay. But your house payment isn’t what’s holding you two back. What’s holding you two back is the fact that you haven’t been willing to tighten up the finances in other areas of your life to offset biting off more than you could chew in terms of a home. No, I wouldn’t refinance. You’re fairly close where the mortgage payments are concerned, so I think you can make it through this by looking at ways to increase your income and selling stuff you don’t need to build an emergency fund. You two have been smarter than some, but you’re really going to have to buckle down and rearrange your priorities to make this happen!

Baby Step 2 is paying off all debts from smallest to largest, except for your home, using the debt snowball method. This will free up a ton of money! Then you’re ready for Baby Step 3, which is increasing your beginner emergency fund to a fully-loaded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. Now you’re ready for Baby Step 4, which is 15 percent of your income going into retirement! —Dave

Since free time or sleeping time is going to become very precious, planning each and every mundane activity, even meals, is of the essence. Having a full schedule for every week is a good idea. It's WANT TO BE A SUPERSTAR Not AT WORK? DO WHAT KOBE BYRANT DID By Robin Ryan
The Los Angeles Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant, lost his life in a helicopter crash Sunday. As we saw the news and reacted to the fact that one of the most talented basketball players who ever lived was dead at 41, it made you think back to the kind of career that Kobe Bryant had. Certainly, he had a fantastic amount of talent to play basketball. But it wasn't just the talent that made him so successful. He would practice morning noon and night. He worked to master his craft and become the best there ever was because that's what drove him. He helped his team win three NBA championships in a row. He became the NBA's Most Valuable Player. He was the youngest basketball star to score 30,000 points in his career. The accolades go on and on. So how do you look at someone like Kobe Bryant and say to yourself I want to be a superstar at work? You think, I want to be the one everybody admires. I’d like to be the candidate that recruiters want to hire. How does that happen? What do you need to do? If you're a Baby Boomer, you need to reflect on where your career is at right now and where is it going.

It's time for a career check-up. Time to take a look at your career and see if you are where you want to be now. Can you get more from it? We know the answer to that question because in many surveys at least 50% of job hunters are people that are already employed but looking to work somewhere else. Maybe they hate their boss, perhaps it's not the right culture, or they might be underpaid whatever the reason they're looking to move on. So how do you get noticed? Well, you have to do some of the things that superstars do.

ESTABLISH A PERSONAL BRAND Your personal brand is your professional reputation and career identity. You must establish yourself so that others recognize the talents that you have and what you're really good at. Kobe Bryant made sure he was the best basketball player he could possibly be by studying the sport, working at the sport, training and practicing so that he could excel when he was on the court. He also cultivated a brand off the court and that was his reputation. We all know his name and who he was. That's the kind of recognition you're looking for. You want employers to know who you are and recognize your name. The best way to gain a great reputation is to determine what your strengths are and master the one that you're best at. For example, maybe your terrific writer, take classes to study other people who write better than you do and continue to work at this craft until you become the best writer you can be. Remember we can always continue to learn. One way to make your brand known is to develop a superior LinkedIn profile. This shows the talent that you have and how you used it on the job to achieve results. Often times the older we get we forget about the importance of knowing that employers care about the results you achieve. It's the initiative you take and how you make things happen and get things done. Resting on your laurels will not be a smart way for you to go forward in your career. Kobe Bryant could've easily rested on his accolades, but he didn't. He kept pushing. He kept driving himself. He kept wanting another NBA ring. He had goals until he had to retire because of injuries. And then, he transitioned into a business person with new goals to achieve in that realm.
YOUR RÉSUMÉ SCREAMS SUPERSTAR Most résumés are very dull. They lack the achievements and the noted results employers want to read about. Recruiters continuously complain that job hunters do not

advertise their skills appropriately. That means results. For Kobe Bryant, it was how many points he scored in the game. For you, it's what you achieve in your job. It could be a big project that allowed the company to become more productive that you need to write about on your résumé. Or maybe it's the fundraising that you took to a new level and delivered a 15 or 20% increase in the revenues than they had made the year before. Maybe you developed a new product or new service and it brought in more customers and helped to meet the mission of the organization or improve the bottom line of the company. Your résumé needs to advertise quickly and efficiently, precisely how you can do a job, and do it so well that they would be lucky to hire you.
YOU SHOULD BE EARNING THE BIG BUCKS You have to know what your actual value is to an employer. Do you? If not, you should do some research. When I teach job search classes, almost nobody raises their hand when I say, do you know what you're skills are worth. How can you ask an employer for more money when you're not sure what you should be paid. Go to Payscale.com. Take the free report to learn exactly what you should be paid based on your level of experience and achievements. What should I be making? The other day I was working with a senior systems engineer. He said he done pretty well working for his Fortune 500 company. At 66, last year, he made $244,000. That was nearly $100,000 more than his peers at his level. He was a superstar and getting paid his true worth, and he was an employee his employer planned to keep as long as he wanted to work. When you look at your salary, check the bonus structure, and what you expect to make in the future. Are the stock, 401(k), and benefits what you want? Ask yourself this key question, "Is this new employer willing to pay as much as possible so they can secure my talents to do their job?" Be sure that you negotiate the first offer made. In my experience as a career counselor the first offer is typically not the best offer. There is more money that they are willing to pay, so you must ask for it by outlining your top skills and strengths and why you're worth more.
