Simply put, a mutual fund—if it’s a stock mutual fund—is a group of 90–200 stocks. If it’s a growth stock mutual fund, then it’s a group of 90–200 growth stocks. Analysts buy the stocks they think will increase in price and sell the stocks they feel will go down in price. When the analysts buy growth stocks, it turns it into a growth stock mutual fund. If they buy bonds instead, it becomes a bond mutual fund. Several people put money into these groups, and that’s where you get the name “mutual fund.” They’re mutually funded.

Now, there are some important wants. I want you to have life insurance to protect your family. I also want you to have a will and health insurance. I want you to have some other nice things, too, like a better car or a nicer house. I interviewed a candidate last week who didn’t blow my socks oﬀ, but I thought he was worth a second interview. After the interview, he emailed me his resume, and his email was just horrible. The resume had grammatical errors, and words were misspelled. Of course now I am totally uninterested in hiring him. He seemed like a good guy, but I sure wouldn’t want him emailing any of our clients! Is there a way I can let him know that he needs to improve his sloppy communication? -Houston, Texas Reader Actually the same thing happened to me this week. I think that many people are so comfortable with Tweeting and texting that they forget that I’m not their pal or buddy. They want to impress me in the interview, and then they just lose focus of their goals. It’s going to be hard to let him know that he buried his chances with

his ridiculous emails. If you send him a letter to say that you will not be hiring him (and you should), you can mention that written communication is a qualification for this job. Maybe he’ll get the hint. If he doesn’t understand, maybe he’ll email me, and I can tell him. I am writing you today because I have a problem with my employer. I did some work at a horse stable for a family run business, and my employer Ms C had some problems with the work I did during the last four days I worked for them. They were supposed to pay me on the first but pushed it back until today. When I arrived to pick up my paycheck, they informed me they were considering withholding my entire paycheck because of those days. I didn’t break anything or damage any property. I simply wasn’t feeling up to it and was moving slowly and wasn’t able to get the work done as fast as I would have liked. Is this a valid reason to withhold all of my pay? Should I seek legal counsel? If it matters, while I was working for them some of the other workers

told me about a lawsuit that was filed against them when they refused to pay the workers for two weeks of work what should I do if they decide to withhold all my pay?

Ouch. You need to notify the Texas Workforce Commission if they don’t pay you. It is against the law to withhold ANYTHING from your pay without your written permission.

Did Ms C talk with you about your work performance at the time that it occurred? If she talked with you, and the work quality did not improve, she had the right to release you from the job, but she is obligated to pay you for the hours worked. If you were fired, they have to Have a question pay you within 6 days. If you quit, they have for Diana? to pay you on their regular pay schedule. TWC askdiana@jobsparx.com really doesn’t care about work performance as criteria because you have to be paid if you are hired to work. I’d wait before hiring an attorney. Obviously being sued by their workers didn’t intimidate them in the past, or she would have learned a little about employment law. Go ahead and
