SANDBLASTER FIRST CLASS A Houston based company in the environmental and industrial cleaning business has an opening for a regular full time 1st Class Sandblaster. Actual job site is in Pasadena, Texas. Purpose: To perform sandblasting inside and outside railcars and other vessels/containers on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for sandblasting and servicing rail cars, tank trailers and other containers and vessels (primarily internal). This involves being able to abrade surface of metals or hard composition objects to remove adhering scale, paint, grease, tar, rust, dirt, etc. to impart finish using abrasive-blasting equipment. Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper. Masks specified areas or objects to protect form abrading action. Required to turn valves on equipment regulating pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle. Must be able to follow written and oral directions, check work orders and shipping documents to determine contents, and performing Job Safety Analysis. Must be able to work in confined specs, wear full face respirator and chemical protective suits plus perform oxygen content, ph and toxicity tests.

Qualifications

High School degree or equivalent with minimum two (2) yrs exp internal blasting of rail cars. Must be able to pass pre-employment test battery (mechanical comprehensions, math, reading, etc.) Good performance record, Good oral and written communication skills Ability to work different shifts and schedules including weekends and holidays Ability to work unsupervised in an efﬁcient manner with attention to detail

Do you think that some staffing companies run fake ads? One of my friends is a corporate recruiter, and she said that she read about it in an industry newsletter. I actually have applied for several of those jobs with temp & stafﬁng agencies and no one has called me back. I took some tests and everything. How do I ﬁnd out if the jobs I tried for are real or not?

I’m sure that you have a specific conﬂict if the hours don’t work for you, and you can just give the counselor an update on your schedule. There are a lot of valid reasons that some schedules won’t work for you: childcare issues, school schedules, part-time jobs, transportation. You can’t take a job and be late or absent. That will get you ﬁred, and you only complicate your already complicated situation. Let your counselor know that you are

it was a fake job because she/he didn’t get hired. That can simply be that he/she wasn’t qualified. You need to be upfront with an agency to make sure that you only apply to jobs for which you are qualified. There is no point in applying, and certainly there is no point in completing a test, if you can’t do the job. It’s kind of like the three bears: some jobs are too big, some jobs are too small and some jobs are just right. You have to fit the job, and the job has to fit you. My mom told me that I am dressing wrong for interviews, but I don’t believe her. She hasn’t had to interview since the 1980’s and times have changed since then. Plus she’s a school teacher, and that’s different. She’s all about wearing a suit or white shirt and tie and that kind of stuff. I don’t apply for big deal jobs so I just wear nice jeans and a polo shirt. What’s wrong with that?

“Your mom is right!” It’s all about courtesy and making a good first impression. I actually met you last week, and you were wearing shorts, a T-shirt, ﬂip-ﬂops and a smile. The best thing about your appearance was the smile. If you actually want to get a job, you have to dress as if you want it. Even if you don’t wear a suit, you should wear slacks, a white shirt and a tie. It won’t kill you to look nice.

She complains about the situation to me, but if I say anything, it makes me the bad guy with her family. How can I convince her? Chuck

I think you need to sit down with your wife, not all the other players, and gently explain to her that you’re just enabling his bad behavior by allowing things to continue this way. Responsible adults don’t behave like bums, and I don’t give a ﬂip what the rest of the family thinks. It’s your house, and this issue is between you and her. You two are the only ones having to deal with this, so it’s really easy for others to chime in about what should happen. But hey, if they’re so concerned with the guy having a place to stay, maybe one of them should take him in. I’ll bet that idea would shut them up in a heartbeat! I’m not advising you to just kick the guy out, but maybe you could formulate a plan that will give him a little time to get back on his feet. Have a loving talk with him about the situation, but let him know things can’t continue on the same path. Let him know that within 30 days he has to have a job, and 30 days after that he has to move into his own place. Write it down on the calendar, if it will help, but make sure he understands why you’re doing this and the date he has to move out. I know these kinds of things can be difﬁcult, but sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns and make something happen. There’s no reason it has to become an ugly situation, as long as you and your wife get on the same page and you do things in a helpful and kind way.

Noel Dear Noel, I know I’m the “get out of debt” guy. I want everyone to experience what life can be like when they’re debt-free and don’t have to send their paychecks out the door to creditors every month. But this little girl may need the kind of help only doctors and hospitals can provide. So, for now, let’s push the pause button on your Total Money Makeover. If I were in your situation, I’d pile up as much cash as possible. Live on a budget that’s tighter than tight and scrape together every penny you can find. Hopefully, your baby won’t need surgery. But if that kind of thing is a possibility, the only smart thing to do is prepare for the accompanying financial hit your family will experience. Don’t feel bad about this either, Noel. If the surgery is necessary, you guys can jump right back in and start your debt snowball after your little girl is healed. But right now, baby comes first. And if you’ve already got $1,000 saved, you’re off to a good start when it comes to handling things! —Dave
