Actual job site is in Pasadena, Texas. Purpose: To perform sandblasting inside and outside railcars and other vessels/containers on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for sandblasting and servicing rail cars, tank trailers and other containers and vessels (primarily internal). This involves being able to abrade surface of metals or hard composition objects to remove adhering scale, paint, grease, tar, rust, dirt, etc. to impart finish using abrasive-blasting equipment. Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper. Masks specified areas or objects to protect form abrading action. Required to turn valves on equipment regulating pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle. Must be able to follow written and oral directions, check work orders and shipping documents to determine contents, and performing Job Safety Analysis. Must be able to work in confined specs, wear full face respirator and chemical protective suits plus perform oxygen content, ph and toxicity tests.

Qualifications

High School degree or equivalent with minimum two (2) yrs exp internal blasting of rail cars. Must be able to pass pre-employment test battery (mechanical comprehensions, math, reading, etc.) Good performance record, Good oral and written communication skills Ability to work different shifts and schedules including weekends and holidays Ability to work unsupervised in an efﬁcient manner with attention to detail

I have been off work a little over a year now and have only one unemployment check left. I have also been on several interviews and had no luck. I don’t understand what the problem is: I’m 64 but don’t look it. I have the skills they are asking for, and I’ve even cut my salary range. Why is it so hard for companies to hire seniors? I am not anywhere near ready to retire. I have all sorts of clerical and customer service experience. I was at my last job for 16 years and worked as an Ofﬁce Supervisor, Administrative Assistant, and Receptionist. I am dependable and detail oriented, and any of my ex-bosses would give me a great reference. I opted for the lay off because I live in Cypress and couldn’t afford the commute when the company moved from Houston to Pasadena. I am looking for either full time or part time work and have applied almost everywhere…I’m not looking for babysitting jobs, either!

I’m not the only one with this problem because some of the other ladies that were also laid off are in the same boat. Any suggestions?? Cypress, Texas Reader I love hiring older workers because they are always on time, they don’t arbitrarily miss work, they are reliable, and they have a wealth of experience to contribute. I hate the term “ageism,” but sometimes it seems to apply - some people refuse to look past age and see experience. As the Baby Boom generation ages, we are losing a huge pool of experienced workers, and that is particularly obvious in skilled jobs. Those jobs are physically demanding and many people are retiring because of health. However, older workers in other ﬁelds are planning to continue to work into their 70’s. It’s not only because most seniors haven’t saved enough money to retire comfortably, it’s also because they want to remain productive. One lady told me that she wasn’t ready to stay home with her cat.

That’s true of many people because their families are out of the house, they live alone, and a permanent vacation can’t compete with working and enjoying your job. I think that some companies are just afraid: they are afraid that you won’t stay long, they are afraid you will have health problems, they are afraid that you won’t have computer skills. The next time you have an interview, tell them that the only reason you left your last company was because they moved. If they hadn’t moved you would have stayed there for the next 10 years. Be very specific about your computer skills so that they know you can do the job. I think you need to look for a smaller company that is more agile and will appreciate your skills. Your experience will actually be a real gain for them because you may have some answers that they don’t! Sometimes those companies don’t have all the benefits that you find with the huge mega companies, but you can afford to buy your own if you are employed.

Keep on keeping on. You’re going to ﬁnd the right job, and they are going to be really lucky to get you. I am 16 years old and really want to work. When I interview, I always dress professionally and prepare by visiting their website. I’m a landlord in New York, and I’ve always felt it’s not a good idea to rely entirely on previous landlords for referrals on prospective tenants. Do you have any tips for selecting good renters?

A debt collector has been calling members of my family to get information on me. She has identiﬁed herself as collector, and I want to pay what I owe, but is it legal for them to do this? If not, what can I do to make them stop?

I have several rental properties, and here are a few tricks that work well for me. I always pull a credit bureau report on prospective renters. I also get a big deposit up front. I spend quite a bit of time talking to them one on one, as well, so with all this they’d have to be a pretty good con artist to get past me. Another thing I do is to drive by the place they’re currently living. I like to see what condition the house is in, and if they keep the yard maintained. To me, this is a great indication of how responsible they are and how they would treat my property. It’s not a bad idea to get some proof of them having made previous rental payments on time, either. In some ways it’s a leap of faith any time you sign an agreement with a new tenant. But there are things you can do in order to make a more informed decision as to whom you’re doing business with. And who knows? Lots of renters appreciate knowing they have a landlord who handles things in a professional manner. Maybe these suggestions will help you both feel a little more at ease.

Dear Katherine, No, it isn’t legal. If she identiﬁed herself in any way as a debt collector, and spoke with anyone but you about your debt, she has broken federal law. This is a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You need to ﬁle a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against this collector and her company. I would also advise recording the conversation the next time they call. Just tell them at the beginning that you’ll be taping any interaction you have with them from that point forward, and tell your relatives to do the same thing. That way, you’ll have proof of their misbehavior to hand over to the FTC or the attorney general. You might even be able to get this crooked collector shut down.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s perfectly okay to collect a debt. If you’re a creditor or collector, it’s simply money that’s owed to you, and you deserve it. But you must do it within the conﬁnes of the law, and you should do it within the conﬁnes of good taste. If you owe money, you should be honorable enough to pay what you owe. But this kind of behavior is just harassment and intimidation. Don’t let them get away with it, Katherine!
