I always hate to hear things like this because it’s inevitable that you are both going to be losers. First, you are put into the uncomfortable position of having to look for a job even though you enjoy what you do. Second, they

are going to spend a lot more money replacing you. Just use bullets to list each duty under a heading that says “Responsibilities.” Be careful how you explain the situation to the interviewer because it could make you sound like a complainer. Simply say that you have all of the responsibilities but that the company is not promoting people at this time. You love the job, but you want to join a company that promotes from within. Good luck! I haven’t worked in two years. I was interviewed for a job the other day and she didn’t hire me. I was so mad, and then I thought about her having my social security number and she could steal my identity and I went back to get my application back from the woman who interviewed me. She said that they were supposed to keep it. I told her I wanted it and she said that she needed to be able to report to the Texas Workforce Commission that she had interviewed me if they called her. I ﬁnally got it back. I don’t think she had the right to keep my paperwork. -Houston, Texas Reader

Seriously? You accused an interviewer of trying to steal your identity? How rude!! I’m guessing you aren’t rich so why would she do that? Holy cow, this is just so paranoid and childish. She tried to tell you that it could impact your unemployment check because you have to report your job searches and interviews to continue getting checks. Occasionally, the TWC calls the company you listed and, using your social security number, asks them if you actually interviewed. The way that you prove that you interviewed is by using your application. You just erased the record of your interview, insulted the interviewer, and acted like a child. If you want a job, adjust your attitude. I have been diagnosed with cancer and will have to take a lot time off in the next few months. I haven’t told anyone at work yet because I’m afraid that I won’t be allowed to keep working. I love my job and won’t be able to support myself without it. I believe my doctors when they say I will be cured, but I don’t want to jeopardize everything. Should I tell them?

Bless your heart. You have to tell your boss that you are not well because you don’t want to have it look like you are simply missing work for no reason. Just be honest and tell them that you are going to beat the cancer and want to continue working for the company. I think you will be surprised by the support you receive. Give them an opportunity to do the right thing. Let me know how your treatment goes and get well.

I understand what you’re saying, but if you look closely at every month, you’ll see pretty quickly that they’re not all created equal in terms of expenses. On top of that, if you work a commissionbased job, your monthly income will ﬂuctuate throughout the year. Now, there are some things that will remain pretty standard. A few things like your rent or mortgage payment will probably be the same month to month. But what about things like utilities and food? Chances are your electric or gas bills will be higher during certain months as you heat and cool your home depending on the weather. What about holidays and special occasions? It’s likely you’ll end up spending more on food, gifts and related items around Thanksgiving and Christmas or other months when family and friends have birthdays and other events.

One of my husband’s credit card bills was turned over to a collection agency. They’ve offered three different payment options. If we accept one of the options, does this mean the original creditor accepts the agreement as well? Cheryl Dear Cheryl, In a situation like this, the collection agency either owns the debt outright or they’re directly representing the credit card company. This is pretty much standard operating procedure when someone has defaulted on a loan. I’d go ahead with the deal they’ve offered that makes the most sense for you guys. You’ll have a ding on your credit report, showing settlement on a defaulted credit card, but it’s really no big deal since you’ve already got a mark against you for having it turned over to collections. Want another piece of advice? Never use credit cards again! —Dave
