Ready to Change Jobs?
How Transferrable Skills Can Help You Land a Better Opportunity by beconrad When the economy hits a rough patch, workers tend to hang on to their current jobs even if those jobs are not ideal. After all, it is hard to make a bold leap into the unknown when unemployment is on the rise and new jobs are hard to come by. When the economy turns around and things start to look brighter, more and more employees are tempted to quit their jobs and search for greener pastures. In fact, the so-called quit rate is a key statistic, one that economists use to measure the strength of the job market and predict changes in future unemployment rates. If you are one of those dissatisfied workers, there is no doubt that having transferrable skills can help you on your job search. Whether you quit your job search or juggle interviews and your full-time position, having skills that are in high demand can make the transition far easier and help you land the better opportunity you have been seeking.
What Are Transferrable Skills?
The list of transferrable skills is nearly endless, and chances are you have a few of those talents in your portfolio - and on your resume. Some of these transferrable skills are quite obvious; if you work as a mechanic, making the switch from one garage to another should not be much of an issue. You may need to brush up on specific models or car brands, but in the end the technology behind the internal combustion engine remains largely the same.
VOL. 22 ISSUE 1086
The same is true for higher skilled career paths. If you hold a law degree and have experience in a law firm, the skills you already possess should qualify you for positions in a wide variety of other firms. Again, you may need to read up on a different part of the law, but the education you received in law school and the skills you gained along the way should help you enormously when it comes time to change positions. The transferrable skills possessed by car mechanics and attorneys are just two examples, and there are many additional talents that transfer well from one job, or even one career, to another. The customer service agent who is blessed with excellent people skills may be able to transfer those skills to a different line of work, advancing his or her career in the process. The corporate trainer who is great at energizing a crowd and speaking effectively may consider a career as a life coach or self-improvement guru. As you can see, possessing transferrable skills can help you find greater opportunities, both inside your current company and without. Understanding how your current talents fit into the corporate workforce and what employers are looking for can jump start your success and help you more forward in your career. If you have not already done so, taking a detailed skills inventory is a good place to start. Simply write down a list of your skills, from those you learned in school to the ones you gained in your current position, and use it to identify the talents that transfer most easily from one employer to another. Armed with that list of talents and skills, you can assess the current employment market and get ready to make your move to a better and more lucrative opportunity.

Moms Returning to Work Joanne left the workforce 14 years ago when her daughter was a baby. Now that the daughter is driving, Joanne began to consider breaking back into the workforce. She contacted me for career guidance in June, when she saw an advertisement for the ideal job. She had no résumé, and no well-considered plan on how to integrate back into the working world. We created a powerful résumé detailing both her old experience and more recent volunteer skills. We wrote a powerful cover letter and sent both the letter and résumé to a prospective company. Within two days the human resources managers at the target company called to set up an interview. We did a crash session on interviewing and Joanne went off to her first job interview in more than a dozen years. The result? She was offered a great job with a very nice salary, and they needed for her to start almost immediately. Unfortunately, Joanne hadn’t thought through the complications of no longer being 100% available to her executive husband and daughter. In the end, she turned the job down because she wanted the summer off, and then, after serious soul searching, she realized that part time employment with a lot of flexibility was all she could handle at this stage of her life.

APRIL 14, 2017
Lora became a client when she separated from her husband and was forced to return to work. She had been in sales years ago, before the two kids, but now she had to work and be a mother at the same time. Working together we determined that two of the most important things she needed were good benefits and stable hours so she could arrange daycare. I also thought she should try temporary work, since she was emotionally fragile and needed to ease back into work mode while still meeting the needs of her children. We created a good résumé and she landed a “temp” job at Microsoft doing inside sales that paid $50,000 annually. Within a year they hired her for a full-time position. She loves the job, and by her second year she was making over $100,000. Marianne was an executive who had left her job eight years ago when her husband’s executive position mandated that they relocate. When her husband got seriously ill, she was forced back into the workforce. We worked together while she went through this crisis. She needed some classes to update her skills and did a great deal of industry research on her own to get back up-to-speed. The effort paid off when she landed a high-paying position. Have a
Gin Youra p Employment History?
By Michael M DeSafey
It’s Not the End of the World, Learn How to Address It Within this crafty little piece, you will find several fantastic tips on how to confidently answer to prospective employers and ensure that no matter the reason for any cavities in your career’s backdrop, there is a clear-cut method to cinch your interviews so your next position is all but in the bag. So you have a gap in your employment history. Maybe you have more than one. Maybe these gaps lasted longer than you intended due to circumstances which were beyond your control. There’s no way to hide it when submitting an application, so why not embrace the intermission and sell it right alongside your education and experience? With construction, engineering and environmental positions being in such high demand, when you sit down to interview with the person who potentially holds your future in his or her hands, it’s critical that you have arrived prepared to discuss the blemishes in your employment history. Just how do you prepare for such a discussion, though? If you are fortunate enough to have a few days or more before the big day, spend

some time geared toward recalling what you actually did throughout the entirety of the gap(s). Write down everything that comes to mind. Did you go back to school or take a specialized course somewhere? Did you start a family? Did you spend time independently educating yourself or performing research of any kind? Were you doing anything that could be considered freelance? When you feel comfortable that your reflection is as complete as possible, take a look at what you’ve scrawled in front of you. Read it back to yourself aloud. Chances are reasonable that you have one or more of the above-mentioned activities in your past, and each one of them is a perfectly acceptable explanation for any lapses in employment. Let’s surmise for a moment, however, that you simply needed a break from the grind for a while. As an engineer, your job is mentally draining and demanding of your time and as someone in construction, your job is physically demanding and maybe the bureaucratic policies within your company have you mentally drained. mentions of knowledge or experience you gained during the gap and explain how, through you, it will directly benefit the company.
Secondly, try to remember that if the reasons for the voids on your resume are due to decisions that you’ve made, you need to own them. While employers don’t necessarily jump for joy when they notice these things, most of them respect the courage it takes to display concise honesty about why you chose to not work for a while, and they’d rather hear about how you took that year off to go train touring through cheese country than a stumbling made-up excuse that’s as easy to see through as expensive crystal. According to Career Builder, no matter how you utilized your time off, employers want to know that you’ve used it as a period of self-reflection. As elegantly and matter-of-factly as possible, detail how you made this time work for you rather than against you and include anything that you have learned about yourself and the industry while you were out of the game.
For the best resume formatting tips and great advice on how to make sure you’re doing everything you can to dazzle your prospects, along with anything you need to know about properly addressing any questionable entries on your resume, get in touch with Webuidl Resumes. We’ll help build your resume, your confidence and your future.
The list you made earlier which encompasses all the things you did while off work should now help you compose the monologues we talked about just a few moments ago. You may not use it as such, but think of this as a sort of sales proposal, and the product you’re selling is yourself. Include VOL. 22 ISSUE 1086
Rehearse this to the best of your ability so you can speak completely off-book when addressing your prospect’s concerns regarding time between jobs. It’s almost a guarantee that your interviewer will have a copy of your resume in front of them while you converse; perhaps marked up in choice places with noticeable red ink to assist them in remembering what to ask about. It’s also dire that you are certain that you haven’t been dishonest by omission on your resume. As stated earlier, if you have gaps, you need to own them, and that means not conveniently forgetting to include the dates you served at each of the jobs on your resume. Whether to include months and years or simply the years through which you worked with a particular company is up for debate, but according to Jim Giammatteo on LinkedIn, you should never leave the months out of your resume because lies simply have no place on a resume, and it’s easy to get caught if you fudge something such as dates. “Every gatekeeper and every headhunter I know gets suspicious when they see only years listed on a resume,” Jim says.

Soul Search
Do some self-analysis. Consider: What do I want to do? What do I most enjoy doing? Do I want to seek part-time or full-time employment? Narrow down your career options. Employers hire you to do a specific job so be able to define exactly what you can do to fit their needs.
Establish a happy career path
Identify your top strengths and assess your abilities and experience (paid and volunteer). Consider what interests you most and focus on how to best apply your talents in a career in which you have a passionate interest. Research the potential job options available and select one or two interesting job titles to pursue.
Be ready to work
Be prepared to clearly illustrate that you have solid, dependable daycare and a reliable backup plan so you will be dependable. Anticipate any overtime requests, travel, and consider the commute time too, when selecting a daycare which may have very rigid hours of service.
Know how to job hunt
filled. 63%! Ask everyone you know for referrals. Many job openings are posted online (several good ones are recommended at RobinRyan.com). Be sure to check companies’ websites too.
Create a winning résumé and cover letter
According to the Department of Labor, A one-page résumé stressing accomnetworking accounts for 63% of all jobs plishments (paid and volunteer), actions and then noting results, such as increasing revenues, decreasing expenses, saving time or improving production are most influential. The cover letter should be concise and focus on your top qualification for the job. Before sending them out always proofread carefully! ‘MOMS’ con’t from page 34 Many women want to restart a career after beginning a family, but with years out of the workforce they question their own worth and whether anyone would hire them. The job search process can seem downright scary causing many women to stay on the sidelines. That won’t happen to you if you start with a workable action plan. Here are some guidelines to follow:
Prepare for the interview Dress professionally! Practice writing out succinct answers to potential questions ahead of time. Role-play to better prepare yourself and to reduce nervousness. Keep answers to less than one minute, and use specific examples from your past experience whenever possible. And, if you have children at home it might be wise to stress your commitment and dependability. Smile—it makes a difference!

FAMILY & BUSINESS
DON’T BE HOUSE POOR!
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
My husband and I own a small business. One of our relatives asked for a job recently, and we both have reservations about hiring him because there are several dysfunctional relationships and personalities within our extended family. Are we being mean? We’re not sure how to respond.
I read where you recommend having your house payment or rent at an amount that’s 25 percent or less of your monthly take-home pay. Does this figure include property taxes and insurance too?
- Becky
Dear Mark,
Dear Becky, Having a small business doesn’t give relatives a free pass to employment. As entrepreneurs, you have the right and responsibility to do what’s best for your company. And you don’t have to hire anyone — even a relative — who’s not a good fit.
Yes, it does. I’m trying to keep you from being “house poor.” Did you know you can qualify for a house payment, with taxes and insurance, that’s close to half of your take-home pay? That’s ridiculous! When you don’t have room in your budget to do anything else that matters because your house payment is so large, that’s what we call house poor.
There are situations where hiring a family member can actually be a plus. If a relative is qualified and the kind of person who understands they’ll have to bust it every single day and perform at a level equal to or above your other team members, that can be a special and productive thing. A relative who is a problem child, however, can be a nightmare in both your professional and personal lives.
When your income minus your basic living expenses equals almost nothing, it means your basic living expenses are way too high. Being in this kind of situation keeps you from saving for really important stuff like investing, retirement, and college for your kids. I’m trying to position you where you can get the house and everything paid off so you can become wealthy. Remember, your most powerful wealth building tool is your income.
Ask yourself a few questions: Would you hire this person if they weren’t part of the family? Would you hire this person because they would make a good team member? If the answers are no, then you don’t hire them — period.
When we talk about driving a crappy car, not going out to eat, or not going on vacation — those are temporary things. It’s all about living like no one else, so that later you can live and give like no one else!
Be kind about the situation, because there may be some bruised feelings. But the bottom line is you have to do what’s best for your business, your immediate family, and your team.
— Dave
