HOW TO GET A GOOD VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
TO LAND A GOOD-PAYING
TECHNICAL JOB A four-year college education can be very expensive, and a college degree does not guarantee that the graduate will get a job right out of college. Increasingly, the value of a good vocational education is seen as the key to many good-paying jobs. However, not all vocational schools are the same. This article discusses the qualities of a good technical school. Certain technical careers are in high demand, and this article will mention some of the jobs that employers in some places in the country are eager to fill. According to a 2012 study by the National Education Association (NEA), 70 percent of American workers do not have a bachelor's degree and only 26 percent of them work in high-skill occupations, which are jobs that require an undergraduate degree. The jobs include instructional and noninstructional support; secretaries, clerks and support for administration); custodial and maintenance services for the building and grounds and repair; skilled trades (trades, crafts and machine operators); and health and student services (nursing, health and therapy support as well as welfare services for families and the community). A low-skill job, on the other hand, requires a high school diploma or less education. Some ESP jobs such as food services fall into this category. The NEA report emphasized jobs related to education. However, many other job categories have niches for middle- and low-skill labor. NEA research for that 2012 study found that just 51 percent of high school students go on to college. Thirty percent of American workers have a four-

AVOIDING A DISASTER SPOT A BAD BOSS DURING THE INTERVIEW & SAVE YOURSELF
A WORLD OF GRIEF by beconrad
Not having a job is bad, but having a job with a bad boss can be even worse. No matter where you work or what kind of job you have, the person you work with sets the tone - and plays a big role in your professional happiness. Sometimes a bad boss is hard to spot, and you do not know you have one until it is too late. Other times, the red flags are flying high right from the beginning. In fact, many signs of bad boss behavior are apparent even during the interview, and those behaviors can serve as a vital warning. As you emerge from your latest interview, take a deep breath and ask yourself these important questions. Answering honestly could save you from the clutches of a bad boss and save you a world of grief. Does the Boss Act Like Your Time is Unimportant? Being late for the interview is one of the worst things a job seeker can do, but the behavior of the interviewer can be quite illuminating as well. If you are on time for the meeting, but the boss is late, he or she should apologize for keeping you waiting, or at least acknowledge their lateness. Proceed with caution if the boss does not acknowledge the fact that they are late, or acts like your time is not important. If your time is not important now, your status is unlikely to rise once you are on the job. If you take the position, you could be in for a lifetime of long nights and unacknowledged overtime.
Are Smiles Hard to Find Around the Office? You are there to attend the interview and meet your potential new boss, but you will probably rub shoulders, and shake hands with a few other people along the way. It pays to be friendly during these
50

encounters; if everything goes well, these people could be your new coworkers. You can tell a lot about the vibe around the workplace through these informal encounters. Are the people you meet smiling and happy? Do they seem pleased to be here and happy with their work? Or are they grumpy and miserable? One or two unhappy employees is par for the course, but if smiles are hard to find around the office, a bad boss could be the reason.
Does the Interviewer Demean the Work of Coworkers or Former Employees? During the course of the interview, the interviewer may talk about why the position is open, but the talk should always stay professional. Red flags should start flying if the boss starts to demean the work of the person who last held the job. Demeaning the work of a colleague is an unprofessional thing to do under the best of circumstances, and it is completely inappropriate in the interview setting. You should be doubly concerned if your potential new boss demeans the work, or the character, or a current staff member. These are the people you would be working with every day; do you really want to start your new job under those circumstances?
Do You Have a Bad Feeling? When it comes to interpersonal relationships, it pays to listen to your gut. If you get a bad vibe when you meet your potential new boss, you should pay attention. That bad feeling could be nothing, or it could be your intuition warning you. Either way, if you get an immediate bad feeling, you should pay close attention during the rest of the interview. If anything else seems amiss, you might want to keep looking for that dream job. Looking for a job is tough; in fact, it could be the hardest job you ever have. When you are out of work and looking for employment, it is easy to get desperate and grab at any job offer, no matter how demeaning or unpleasant. But if you have any options left, it pays to hold out for what you want. You may not land the job of your dreams, but skipping the job with the terrible boss will be good for your mental health and your physical well being.

Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y
DON’T COMPROMISE YOUR E M E R G E N CY F U N D Dear Dave, My wife and I are debt-free, and we’re ready to start building our first home. We’re a little short on cash to make the 20 percent down payment you recommend, but we do have a fully funded emergency fund in place. Would it be okay to take a little out of our emergency fund to make up the difference?
- Chris Dear Chris, Well, you didn’t give me exact numbers here. I don’t know how short a little short is, and I don’t know how big your emergency fund is. If you use a little of your emergency fund to round off the 20 percent and then you have an emergency, where are you going to be? I recommend always having three to six months of expenses set aside for emergencies. If you’ve got $50,000 in your emergency fund and you use $10,000 of it, you’ll be fine. But anything that leaves you with less than three or four months of expenses stashed away would worry me. That’s the way you’ve got to look at it. Just use a little common sense with the numbers. I’d love for you to put down 20 percent because you’d avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which runs about $75 a month per $100,000 borrowed. It costs you a lot of money if you don’t put down 20 percent. You should try to do that if possible, but don’t be irresponsible with your emergency fund in the process. Your emergency fund, when it’s there, tends to keep emergencies away. When it’s not there, you have a tendency to attract emergencies and your life starts to sound like a sad country song!

ETHICS & INTEGRITY Dear Dave, I’ll be getting out of the military soon, and I want to open a coffee roastery in civilian life. I had planned to work at an established place like Starbucks for a while so I can learn the business. Recently, I’ve become concerned with this idea from an ethical point of view. Can you give me some guidance?
-Wayne Dear Wayne, First, thank you for your service. The fact that you have enough integrity to even think about this means you’re a conscientious, honest person. I think you’re going to be okay. Making and serving coffee is not a proprietary set of information. It’s done all over the world by lots of people, so you’re not violating any ethics by doing that. Now there would definitely be something wrong with you stealing another company’s exact recipes or logo, but I think you already knew that. There’s nothing wrong with learning how to make different coffee drinks that are made all over the world. Starbucks doesn’t have a corner on that. There are coffeehouses all across America these days, so there’s no ethics breach. Just understand what’s proprietary about a company or a brand, and don’t duplicate that. Best of luck to you, sir!
