I Want a Skilled Trade:

Ways to Fund Your New Career By Chris Dixon

In the United States, skilled trades tend to pay more than unskilled. People who acquire the skills to do these essential jobs--welding, cutting hair, programming computers, fixing machines, and many more--all of which are in demand. However, funding these career paths can be problematic. You may not have the time, money, or other resources to devote to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a specific field. The skilled trade you’d like to learn may not even offer training within a college or university program. How, then, do you fund your new career? These tips may not apply to all the paths you’re considering, but they’ll offer great places to start your research.

To find out more about apprenticeships, ask your friends and family about what they do for a living. If they’re in these trades, they can tell you how they got started. You can also search the Internet for apprenticeship opportunities in your area. Remember that each state has different requirements; for example, if you want to become an electrician’s apprentice, you may need to take a test and acquire an apprentice’s license.

that directly apply to the job you’re currently doing (the company may pay you to take Business English, but not English Literature, for example). People you know--family, friends, coworkers, college instructors, and others--may have other ideas. How did they get the jobs they have? They’re probably willing to talk with you, so take notes and think about whether or not their answers can lead you to the skilled trade you want to pursue.

In some cases, a college or university will offer such benefits as free tuition and fees as long as you’re an employee with the school. Being a custodian isn’t glamorous work, but that may be a way to pay for classes. You may even study something like engineering or mechanics, then be rehired at that school doing the work--leading to better pay and more-interesting work, along with health insurance and Formal, higher education isn’t limited to de- other benefits of working for an educational gree programs; plenty of community colleges institution. and schools offer certificate or training pro- grams. Apprenticeships Pay You to Work

Your Job May Pay You to Learn

Apprenticeship programs still exist; ask the nearest electrician or plumber if you’re not convinced. The core concept is, you work under direct supervision of a licensed master of the trade, and in some cases, go to night school to learn the rest of what you need to know. Sooner or later, you’ll acquire the education and on-the-job hours you need to earn licensing and a higher title in your chosen field.

Some employers offer scholarships or tuition-reimbursement programs to employees in good standing. Ask someone in human resources if this applies where you work, and if so, how to start the process. You may have to meet certain qualifications, e.g., taking courses

L A T A 10 F

KES A T S I M W NG E I v R E T IN In most situations, the face-to-face interview is the “make or break” point of the hiring process; it is here that hiring managers evaluate the characteristic of the individual that cannot be expressed on paper or through email. The last thing you want to do is negate all of the time and effort you’ve put into perfecting your resume and writing an impressive cover letter by acting in inappropriate ways. Here are some common mistakes that will immediately eliminate you from the candidate pool:

1.INAPPROPRIATE ATTIRE.

57% of hiring managers say they have encountered, and eliminated, candidates who are dressed inappropriately for the interview.* Trade in your rainbow colored halter top, bedazzled Levis, gaudy jewelry, and sequin flip flops for a neutral colored suit and close-toed shoes.

2. Not being groomed appropriately.

Along the same lines of proper attire, please make sure you are appropriately groomed. Unless you are applying to be a fashion designer or punk rocker, conservative is better!

3. NOT BEING PREPARED TO ANSWER THE BASIC INTERVIEW QUESTIONS.

Regardless of the industry or position, there are certain questions you should always assume interviewers will ask. Have answers prepared beforehand; the worse case scenario is that you aren’t asked those questions, so what do you have to lose? Be prepared for questions like: What are your strengths and weaknesses? Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years? What do you bring to the table that others don’t? How does your previous experience relate to this position?

4. NOT GIVING SPECIFIC ANSWERS.

34% of hiring managers claimed that being vague in your answers

7. NOT GETTING PERSONAL.

I am not talking about asking your interviewer out for drinks afterwards...I am addressing the topic of you being real. Be honest. Be genuine. And be sincere. Anything else is a waste of everyone’s time.

8. SLIPS OF THE TONGUE.

We are all guilty of it, but making a conscious effort to control your words makes all the difference in the world. The most common mistake is trash-talking a current or previous employer. Not only does this show a lack of integrity on your part, but also gives the impression that you are disagreeable and hard to work with.

9. NOT TURNING YOUR CELL PHONE OFF.

Big mistake. Turn it off. Off. Not on silent, not on vibrate, OFF. We know that you have texts to read and Facebook posts to respond to but it’s really not worth losing a job opportunity. And do not, under any circumstances, check your phone during the interview. That shows the interviewer that you are clearly more interested in what’s happening on your phone than what’s going on in the interview.

10. BEING LATE.

You would think I wouldn’t have to address this but I still have candidates who are late to interviews. Just don’t do it. Your cover letter and resume can only win you the interview. Making the conscious effort to avoid these common interview mistakes will help you make a great, lasting impression on your interviewer.

is like not having an answer at all, so do your best to prepare!*

5. NOT HAVING QUESTIONS FOR THE INTERVIEWER.

Not having questions of your own for the interviewer stems from n o t doing your research before the interview. Remember, you are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you and not asking questions about the position and/or company can be misinterpreted as a lack of interest. 34% of hiring managers claim that this indiscretion will result in elimination from the candidate pool.*

6. NOT ABLE TO JUSTIFY YOUR SALARY REQUIREMENTS.

Every hiring manager wants to hear why you think you are worth your requested salary so be prepared to discuss it. We can help in this topic if you aren’t sure where to start.

Interview with a ...

Bonnie Dunbar College Station, Texas

PROFESSOR OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING WHAT DO YOU DO?

I’m an aerospace engineering research professor. I work on research and mentor graduate students, but I also give speeches and do symposiums. I deal with budgets, hire faculty, and serve on a committee. There are a lot of elements to my work. Every day is different. Academia ensures that we educate the next generation of engineers and also continue the leading edge of research.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF NASA

What kind of leading-edge research are you doing? An area we desperately need research on for the future is advanced spacesuits. Not Hollywoodstyle astronaut clothing, but a suit designed for real human survival in an extreme environment. So when I was

approached by my university and asked what I wanted to research, that’s what I identified. When you see an astronaut working on the International Space Station, that suit is like a spacecraft in the shape of a human. What a spacecraft has in it, that suit has, too. The problem is that you have to be mobile in it and be able to work with it on, and it has to fit well. We’ve spent 50 years optimizing it, but there’s still room to improve.

WHAT IMPROVEMENTS ARE YOU FOCUSING ON?

We want to make spacesuits more mobile. We have to reduce the mass, reduce the volume of all the life support systems in the suit. It’s called the “portable life support system,” but it could be a whole lot more portable. We’ve developed equations to model the dynamics of the motion of a person, and we have computer models that simulate soft tissue to predict injury. So we’ll be applying that research to the spacesuit to really enhance the design. Where there’s no answer, that’s where we put the research. I define research as: you search and search for the answer, and you keep re-searching.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR EDUCATION AND EARLY CAREER PATH. 44

APRIL 7, 2017

I worked my way through college, first as VOL. 22then ISSUEat1085 a waitress, a canning plant. After

I got my bachelor’s degree and was finally in a professional career, I was working for an aerospace manufacturing company and, for the first time, was earning a pretty good wage. I had been in that job for about 2 years when one of the department chairs from my alma mater called. He knew I eventually wanted to be an astronaut and said, “We just got this NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Administration] grant that involves a new concept, the space shuttle, and you ought to come back for your master’s degree.” Well, he’d said the magic word: NASA. So I went back and got my master’s degree. Then I applied for the astronaut program and made the final 100 for the 1978 class, but I was not selected for that group. I looked at all the mission specialists who were selected and realized that they had doctoral or medical degrees. It was hard to compete if I didn’t have that. NASA offered me a job at mission control, which I accepted. While I was working full time at NASA, I also went to school part time to get my Ph.D. and applied again— successfully, this time—to become an astronaut.

HOW DOES YOUR EXPERIENCE TIE IN WITH YOUR CURRENT JOB?

In aerospace engineering, we come from three different sectors, and I’ve worked in all three. I worked in private industry, helping to build the space shuttle; I was in the federal government, working for NASA as an astronaut and an engineer; then there’s academia. All three experiences have helped me to be a well-rounded professor. The fact that I worked in industry and government gives me a better perspective for my students. I can talk about what the expectations are from industry or tell them about what I did in the government and how projects and research are funded. And my doctoral degree taught me how to do research.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE YOUR STUDENTS?

VOL. 22are ISSUEmandatory. 1085 Communication skills

When you go into companies as an engineer, you have to be able to communicate orally and in writing. Yes, there are engineers who don’t communicate well, but they also don’t progress as well. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can’t communicate it to anyone, it’s not going to go anywhere. Also, always try to learn from failure. Perseverance and commitment are helpful, but a willingness to learn from failure is critical. Many of our young people have, first of all, a real reluctance to admit something went wrong; and second, a real defensiveness about it. But there will be failures, so learn from them and don’t get defensive about them. Talk about mistakes so you can share experiences.

WHEN DID YOU LEARN TO LOOK AT FAILURE AS SOMETHING POSITIVE?

I’m the daughter of a farmer and rancher, so I learned that early on. You don’t have 100 percent success in farming and ranching, but you always try to learn from failure. NASA was always transparent about its failures. Ever since the beginning of the space program, any time we conducted a mission, we always conducted a “lessons learned” session afterward. We would talk about what failed and why it failed, and we’d get to the root cause: whether it was hardware, software, crew training, whatever. We documented all of that

and carried it forward from flight to flight. I think that process contributed to the success of programs, because we didn’t keep repeating past failures.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT TEACHING?

If I can touch at least one student’s life and get him or her excited about learning—engineering in particular—that’s very gratifying. That’s what education is all about. Throughout human history, it’s always been about educating the next generation. If we didn’t educate, we’d be back in caves.

WHAT DO YOU FIND CHALLENGING?

As an aerospace engineer, the challenges can be technical. But as a professor, you may deal with budget and management issues, and there’s great satisfaction in being able to work through these challenges successfully. I don’t look at challenges as a negative, though. For me, it’s a question of attitude. If there weren’t challenges, you wouldn’t learn. You learn to work through them to get to a better place. A challenge, as my dad would say, is an opportunity in disguise. Domingo Angeles is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS. QuESTiOns YOu CAn AsK

By Robin Ryan, Bestselling Author of 60 Seconds & You’re Hired

Y

ou should view the interview as a courtship time between you and the company. They ask you questions to learn more about your abilities and accomplishments. You also have the opportunity to impress the employer by the questions YOU ask plus learn more about what it’s really like to work there. Here are my recommended 25 questions that you could ask. Notice how each one is designed to gather details about doing the job and to learn more about the organization’s work culture and environment. Be sure to pose the appropriate question to the correct person. Technical questions and job specifics are unlikely to be answered by the HR person, whose responsibility is to screen and validate your true experience, but who possesses only a general idea of the job duties. Other questions are ideal for the hiring manager. Review my list and have at least 8-10 questions to ask written down and bring them to the interview. “Could you describe to me your typical management style and the type of employee that works well with you?” “How would you describe the corporate culture here? “What are the day-to-day responsibilities I’ll have in this job?” “Whom will I be supervising?” “Will your company be expanding, bringing on any new products or new services that I should be aware of?” “What are some of the skills and abilities you see as necessary for someone to succeed in this job?” “What challenges might I encounter if I take on this position?” “What are your major concerns that need to be immediately addressed in this job?” “What are the areas in the job that you’d like to see improved upon?” “What is your company’s policy on providing seminars, workshops, and training so the employees can keep up on their skills or acquire new skills?”

46

“What is the budget this department operates with? Has it be changed in the last year, and if yes, how? “Are there any restraints or cutbacks planned that would decrease that budget?” “What particular computer equipment and software do you use here? When was your last upgrade?” “Will I be working as part of a team or alone?” “How will my leadership responsibilities and performance be measured? By whom?” “Are there any weaknesses in the department that you are working to improve?” “What new endeavors is the company currently undertaking?” “What goals or objectives need to be achieved in the next six months? Next year?” “What areas of the job would you like to see improvement in with regard to how the person who most recently performed these duties?” “Describe the atmosphere of the office.” (With this question, you are looking for clues on political turf wars, pressure and stress level.) “What types of people seem to excel here?” “Is the company quick or slow to adopt new technology?” “How would you describe the politics of this organization?” “Where is the person who previously held this job?” (If fired, ask why; if promoted, where he or she went; if it is a newly created job, get a better idea of why it was added.) “How does the company promote personal and professional growth?” Ideally, you need to stay focused on the job—the duties and/or the promotional opportunities. Remember, a key strategy is to not ask questions about salary, benefits, or perks. The best time to cover those issues is after you’ve been offered the job.

ROTH OVER PENSION

WHY THE SMALLEST DEBT FIRST?

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

My wife and I are both 25 years old, and we’re working on Baby Steps 4, 5 and 6. I have a 401(k) through my employer, and she has a pension. Currently, we’re falling short of the 15 percent of income you advise putting toward retirement. Should we get IRAs, or start stocking money away in her pension?

I’m new to you and your plan. Why do you want people to pay off the debt with the smallest balance first, instead of the one with the highest interest rate?

- John Dear John, I wouldn’t put money into a pension. For one thing, when you die after putting money into a pension, in most cases it dies with you. Number two, when you put money into a pension, you’re going to get about a six percent rate of return in the current environment — maybe even as low as five percent. You’re not making much on it while you’re alive, so I don’t advise putting money in pensions. We let employers put money in pensions, if they want to. That’s a nice benefit, but I wouldn’t add to it. I would do a couple of Roth IRAs, and max those out. Then, max out whatever you’ve got at work that you own. Of course, when you’re vested in a pension, you own it. That much is true. But still, I don’t advise adding to pensions, buying years up, or any of those kinds of things. There are a few examples out there where that kind of thing works mathematically to your benefit, but they’re very hard to find. Out of all the years I’ve been in this business, I can count on two hands the number of times I’ve seen it work out.

- Courtney Dear Courtney, Simply put, because personal finance isn’t all about math. Personal finance is only about 20 percent math. The other 80 percent is behavior. We list debts in the debt snowball in order of the smallest to the largest balance, putting as much as possible toward the smallest while paying the minimum payments on the others. The reason, as I mentioned earlier, is behavior modification. It helps you see yourself making a dent in your debts. It’s easier to change bad habits when you see quick results from your efforts to eliminate negative behaviors. Paying off the smallest debts first, instead of the debts with the highest interest rates, will give you quick wins that will help keep you motivated. It provides proof that you can succeed and become debt-free!

— Dave

Dave Ramsey can be heard on KSEV AM 700 Weekdays 2:00pm - 4:00 pm

So no, I wouldn’t do more with a pension where you add to it yourself, especially at such a young age. — Dave
