IS COLLEGE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR CHILD? THE ANSWER MAY SURPRISE YOU

Having a firm grasp of their future career goals will make choosing a major much easier. Those firm career goals can also reduce the amount of time it takes to get through school, and that can reduce the amount of student loan debt.

As a parent, it is natural for you to want your child to succeed in life and do even better than you did. If you went to college, chances are you want to see your son or daughter follow in your footsteps. If you were unable to attend a university, you probably want your child to be the first in the family to go on to higher education. While those desires are certainly admirable, they may not always be the right choice. It is true that a college education an be the key to a successful and lucrative career, but it is equally true that such an education costs more than ever before.

Is Your Child Really Destined for a White Collar Career? If your son or daughter is in line or a great scholarship, the decision to attend college is an easy one. But if attending college means taking out tens of thousands of dollars worth of student loans, that decision can be a bit murkier. While no one is questioning the value of a college education, it is important to take a step back and assess your own family situation. There are a number of times when delaying - or even forgoing - higher education can make a lot of sense.

Is Your Child Emotionally Ready for College?

Going to college is a big step for any young person, but it can be a particularly difficult transition for those who are not emotionally mature enough to handle it. Some high school graduates simply are not mature enough for the freedom - and the responsibility - of college. 6 DECEMBER 12, 2017 - JANUARY 4, 2018

As a parent, part of your job is to look at these things realistically. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from an extra year or two at home, postponing college can be a smart move. Your child should not be idle during that time; working a full-time or part time job, volunteering in the community or attending community college are all great possibilities.

Does Your Child Know What He or She Wants to Do? Entering college without a firm game plan in mind can be particularly dangerous - and expensive. Those who do not yet know what they want to do may benefit from a little time off before attending college. That time off can be very valuable - a chance for young people to find themselves and think about what they want to do for a living.

Many parents simply assume that their offspring will head off to the business world, but that world is not the right choice for everyone. Some young people are simply more comfortable - and more adept at - working with their hands. The good news is that many of those blue collar careers - from plumber and electrician to oil driller and welder - pay as much, or even more, than the typical business career. If your son or daughter is more comfortable in those arenas, pushing them into college could be counterproductive. You might be better off pushing your child toward a trade school or community college training program. College can still be a great investment, and higher education is often the key to financial success. EOE is not the Even so, there are times when college only - or even the best - option. Your child can still have a great future and a successful career, even if higher education is not in the cards. VOL. 22 ISSUE 1121

GIFT CARDS FOR GRANDKIDS?

INTERVIEW FOLLOW-UP

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

What’s an appropriate amount for gift cards to send each of our five grandchildren for Christmas?

What is the proper etiquette after the job interview process? I recently had an interview for a sales management position. I’ve sent a couple of follow-up emails in the last few weeks, and I know I’m still under consideration, but I’m not sure what to do now.

Liz

Krista Dear Liz, How much do you spend on your grandchildren? Enough to make their parents nervous! Seriously, I think it depends on two things. First, are you two debtfree, or at least able to provide gifts without going into debt or hurting yourselves financially? There’s nothing wrong with spoiling the grandbabies once in a while. But don’t use Christmas as an excuse to lose your minds, blow your budget, or go into debt every December. The amount you spend on gifts? I would suggest making it reasonable, not over the top, and relative to your income and that of the household in which the kiddos live. The second thing I wonder about is the ages of all the grandchildren. I can’t imagine a four-year-old getting excited over a gift card. So, if that’s the general age range we’re talking about, have some fun with it! Head down to the store, and really put some thought into these decisions. On the other hand, it might be just the thing for a teenager — especially if you know where they like to shop and hang out. Older kids want to make their own decisions, so depending on the personality of the grandchild, a gift card might be the way to go. But if your grandkids are still little, please don’t give them gift cards. No, grandma. No!

—Dave

8

Dear Krista Next time, since you obviously have a sales background, how about treating it like a sales call? If you’re on a sales call, and the customer needs to perform some due diligence before deciding, a smart salesperson will ask to schedule a follow-up. Ask if checking back on a certain day in the next week or two will work. You don’t want to be obnoxious, but you want an appointment of sorts — a time frame — so you’ll know when to follow up without being pushy. In this situation, I would recommend sending another email. You want to walk right up to that fine line that separates bold from obnoxious, because that’s one of things a good sales manager should be able to do. Respectfully tell them you understand the decision-making process takes time, but you need to know when you can expect an answer. Use the idea that you’re a great sales person, and you’re treating this as a professional sales call. And don’t be afraid to have a little fun with it. If you’re still under consideration, that means they like you. You could even hint at the fact they don’t want to hire a sales manager who doesn’t know how to follow up!

—Dave

money moves to make before the end of 2017

by Chris Hogan

If you’re like the Hogan household, the month of December means one thing — Christmas! Decorations, parties, church, family time and lots of stocking stuffers! In the seasonal hullabaloo, it’s easy to forget one very important activity that must be on your to-do list: an end-ofyear financial check-in. Before December 31, 2017, you need to make sure you’ve done everything you can to maximize your retirement savings and minimize the taxes you’ll pay in 2018. You’ve probably allowed this area to go on autopilot, but you need to take advantage of retirement options and tax write-offs you might have forgotten about. The less money Uncle Sam gets, the more money you have to fuel your retirement dream!

2. Yes, You Can Contribute to an IRA Once you’ve maxed out your contributions to your 401(k), you’re not done! You can also put money into an IRA. There are two types — traditional and Roth — and you can put away $5,500 per year in this account (or $6,500 for age 50 and up). To find which kind of IRA would be better for your situation, talk to your investment professional. They’ll know which to choose, and they can probably help you set it up.

3. Been Blessed? Pass it On! Take unused clothes to a homeless shelter and donate books to a local library or a non-profit clinic. Just make sure you have a receipt for donations of $250 or more. There are other tax forms if you give bigger amounts — all the more reason to talk to an investment pro this time of year.

4. Make Your Required Withdrawal Six months after you turn 70, you must begin taking out money from your retirement accounts, like an IRA or a workplace 401(k). The IRS dictates a minimum you must withdraw (called a required minimum distribution or RMD), and if you don’t, you’ll be penalized — 50 percent of the money you didn’t take out. You don’t have to spend it, so if you don’t need it, just park it in savings.

5. It’s Safer to File Early Doing your taxes ranks right up there with a root canal. I get it. But filing your return early lessens the probability of being a victim of identity theft. If you’ve already filed, nobody else can file a fraudulent claim using your information. If you mail in your tax return, don’t put it in your mailbox. Take it directly to the post office. This is an easy way to protect your money — and your identity.

1. How’s Your 401(k)?

Before the ball drops on December 31, set up an appointment with your financial advisor to review your investments and finances. You can also talk about any changes to your retirement goals. If you don’t know who to talk to, we can recommend a professional in your area. Taking action now can put you closer to your retirement dream in the future!

Did you know that you can increase your workplace 401(k) contribution in December to hit your yearly limit? The most you can invest through your employer is $18,000 a year (or $24,000 if you’re 50 or over). If you haven’t hit that amount, talk to the person in HR who manages your 401(k) plan. Tell them how much extra you want taken out of your last paycheck this year. You can even have your yearly bonus go into your 401(k). Just make sure you don’t blow your budget10 trying to hit that DECEMBER 12,cap! 2017 - JANUARY 4, 2018

G A a P e v a H

? y r o t s i h t n e m y o l p m e r u o in y With construction, engineering and environmental positions being in such high demand, when you sit down to interview with the person who potentially holds your future in his or her hands, it’s critical that you have arrived prepared to discuss the blemishes in your employment history. Just how do you prepare for such a discussion, though?

It’s not the end of the world, Learn how to address it by Michael DeSafey

Within this crafty little piece, you will find several fantastic tips on how to confidently answer to prospective employers and ensure that no matter the reason for any cavities in your career’s backdrop, there is a clear-cut method to cinch your interviews so your next position is all but in the bag. So you have a gap in your employment history. Maybe you have more than one. Maybe these gaps lasted longer than you intended due to circumstances which were beyond your control. There’s no way to hide it when submitting an application, so why not embrace the intermission and sell it right alongside your education and experience? 46 DECEMBER 12, 2017 - JANUARY 4, 2018

If you are fortunate enough to have a few days or more before the big day, spend some time geared toward recalling what you actually did throughout the entirety of the gap(s). Write down everything that comes to mind. Did you go back to school or take a specialized course somewhere? Did you start a family? Did you spend time independently educating yourself or performing research of any kind? Were you doing anything that could be considered freelance? When you feel comfortable that your reflection is as complete as possible, take a look at what you’ve scrawled in front of you. Read it back to yourself aloud. Chances are reasonable that you have one or more of the above-mentioned activities in your past, and each one of them is a perfectly acceptable explanation for any lapses in employment. Let’s surmise for a moment, however, that you simply needed a break from the grind for a while. As an engineer, your job is mentally draining and demanding of your time and as someone in construction, your job is physically demanding and maybe the bureaucratic policies within your company have you mentally drained. The not-so-technical term for time off work in this instance is “burnout”. With increased pressure from activists and the general health community, it is now more acceptable than ever to take time off for mental VOL. 22 ISSUE 1121

So you have a gap in your employment history. Maybe you have more than one. There’s no way to hide it when submitting an application,

so why not embrace the intermission and sell it right alongside your education and experience? health. Everyone needs to regroup occasionally, and the time it takes to do so will vary from person to person. Keep in mind, however, that a year off for mental maintenance may raise a few eyebrows. It’s best to keep this explanation for the shorter gaps whenever you can. During an important interview, how do you go about portraying to your prospect that these little chasms are nothing about which they should worry? The answer is simple, yet perhaps difficult for some to execute. Confidence is your best friend during these fragile moments, and a well-rehearsed monologue for each questionable rift are the proverbial golden tickets for being able to walk out of your meeting with a head held high. What if you lack confidence, or are simply the sort of person who freezes up during interviews? A couple of easy exercises done solo or with a partner will help shake those nerves. First, and perhaps most importantly, practice speaking while smiling. According to Forbes, smiling helps to stimulate your own sense of well-being, in turn boosting your confidence. If you aren’t comfortable exchanging role-play banter with a partner, use a mirror to help remind yourself to smile. Smiling should also never be forced, and a fake smile is noticeable. Remember the time you gave your wife a sweatshirt that you thought she’d really love, and when she saw it, the smile on her face made it obvious that she’d rather throw it in the fireplace than even wear it to bed? You’re not alone in being able to notice a pseudo-grin, so if you find yourself having trouble smiling while you speak, try picturing something in the back of your mind that would make you show some friendly teeth. And if that doesn’t work, the fact that you’ve been chosen to interview with this next company should, if nothing else, be enough to get you smiling. Secondly, try to remember that if the reasons for the voids on your resume are due to decisions that you’ve made, you need to own VOL. 22 ISSUE 1121

them. While employers don’t necessarily jump for joy when they notice these things, most of them respect the courage it takes to display concise honesty about why you chose to not work for a while, and they’d rather hear about how you took that year off to go train touring through cheese country than a stumbling made-up excuse that’s as easy to see through as expensive crystal. According to Career Builder, no matter how you utilized your time off, employers want to know that you’ve used it as a period of self-reflection. As elegantly and matterof-factly as possible, detail how you made this time work for you rather than against you and include anything that you have learned about yourself and the industry while you were out of the game. The list you made earlier which encompasses all the things you did while off work should now help you compose the monologues we talked about just a few moments ago. You may not use it as such, but think of this as a sort of sales proposal, and the product you’re selling is yourself. Include mentions of knowledge or experience you gained during the gap and explain how, through you, it will directly benefit the company. Rehearse this to the best of your ability so you can speak completely off-book when addressing your prospect’s concerns regarding time between jobs. It’s almost a guarantee that your interviewer will have a copy of your resume in front of them while you converse; perhaps marked up in choice places with noticeable red ink to assist them in remembering what to ask about. It’s also dire that you are certain that you haven’t been dishonest by omission on your resume. As stated earlier, if you have gaps, you need to own them, and that means not conveniently forgetting to include the dates you served at each of the jobs on your resume. Whether to include months and years or simply the years through which you worked with a particular company is up for debate, but according to Jim Giammatteo on LinkedIn, you should never leave the months out of your resume because lies simply have no place on a resume, and it’s easy to get caught if you fudge something such as dates. “Every gatekeeper and every headhunter I know gets suspicious when they see only years listed on a resume,” Jim says. Q: I have had a few problems in the last 3 or 4 years, and even though I’ve been able to fi nd jobs, I haven’t stayed more than a year. I know it sounds like I’ve been fi red, but I haven’t. I just chose companies that are not stable and they downsized or went out of business. How do I explain to interviewers that it’s not my fault without sounding defensive? How can I fi gure out if a company is stable and reliable?

Q: I work for a really nice company and like you should just get over it if you are released from a

A: If your experience with the company is good,

interviewer. It doesn’t sound defensive or as if you are making excuses – it sounds like you have hit a round of bad luck. I have no idea how you can be positive that the company is stable and reliable. You can research the company and look at their history, but that doesn’t always tell you what the future will hold. Look for media reports about the company. That will tell you if they have recently been bought or merged with another company. You can also look at the news link on the company’s website, because they will be talking about future plans and recent accomplishments.

a bad review about the company, defi nitely tell a supervisor or Human Resources. The truth is that most of the bad reviews of companies are simply an angry ex-employee who usually was released because of performance. They believe that they can get “even” with the company by bad-mouthing them anonymously. Usually, HR can call or contact the company that is posting the review and ask for the review to be removed. I think it’s too bad that this service is not one that gives us good information. Usually the review is so rude and ridiculous that the person who posted it can be readily identified by the company. My theory is that

everyone here. I get paid well, and I have been recently promoted. I was reading an online review of our company yesterday, and it shocked me. The review was really rough and rated the company low. I don’t know if I should tell someone or just ignore it. I also don’t know if the review is right, and I need to watch out for myself with the company.

Q: I love my offi ce party every year, but I have other plans this year for that date. I know I can reschedule my personal plans if I have to do that, but do you think it would be okay to skip the big holiday party at work?

-Houston, Texas Reader

A: Not really. If the other plans can be rescheduled A: I see this frequently, and I say just tell the chances are that it’s a good company. If you read and aren’t something like a wedding or other “must

If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days. Have a question for Diana?

30 TOP CAREERS FOR

ADHD By: Katharine Benelli Coggeshall

Living with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can feel like a challenge when you are in the wrong career. But, pairing this trait with the right career can help you sky-rocket your potential and success, without compromising your personality. Those with ADHD tend to embrace the present, living in the moment and spending less time thinking about the future and the past. In the right situation, this can be a serious advantage. You can learn to harness your seemingly endless energy and lower inhibitions in these 30 careers, where your ADHD traits are seen as superhuman strengths.

VOL. 22 ISSUE 1121

Most of these careers require a mind with quick decision-making skills, and people with ADHD have the upper hand when it comes to assessing the present. In these careers, it is a gift to be able to focus all of your energy on the current situation at hand, especially in times of disaster or distress. That’s why people with ADHD can be successful emergency first-responders, ER nurses, and military officers. Another trend in this list of careers for those with ADHD is risk-taking. Many people are too inhibited to take the risks necessary to be successful in these listed careers. That’s why people with ADHD make for superstar instructors (skydiving, scuba, rock climbing, etc.) and don’t shy away from the fast-paced environment of the stock market and Wall Street. With big risk comes big rewards; there is potential for someone with ADHD to be incredibly successful. Another trait that most ADHD folks possess is performing well independently and within their own timeframe. Being an entrepreneur is not out of the question. But, success is more predictable with careers like forest ranger, social media expert, and animal trainer. Those with ADHD can handle isolation and independence gracefully. Physical and dangerous professions also rate highly on the list of careers that promote traits of ADHD. It takes grit and guts to be a glass blower, welder, or carpenter. Those with ADHD can handle fast-paced racecar driving and firefighting too. When a person with ADHD can harness their gifts of being in the present moment, accepting risks, dealing with calamity and stress, and not breaking under physical and mental pressure, they are headed for unstoppable success. It is a matter of choosing the right career, one that encourages the benefits of ADHD. These 30 careers are the perfect starting place, and there are many more as well. Embrace your ADHD DECEMBER 15, in 2017 - JANUARY 4, 2018 55 and learn to work with your strengths order to find achievement.
