down. Yes, there are downturns happening and companies reducing their workforces. Those facts don’t have to live in your head and affect your thinking and transition activities. Find the companies that are hiring and the parts of the economy that are thriving. Put your energy into uncovering the positive. I write and advise frequently about how to see the typically unpleasant job search or career change as a positive experience – by putting concrete plans around it, noting every accomplishment and by recognizing it as an opportunity to meet new people and learn about different companies and industries while reaching for your right livelihood. Now more than ever, it’s necessary for you to adopt these mindsets wholeheartedly, and also to consciously surround yourself with all things positive. That means everything you read, listen to, do and watch. And, more importantly, surround yourself with very positive, supportive people. Enough of this bad news from doom and gloom naysayers! Protect yourself and your future by seeking out the good. While in a job search, it’s very easy to get trapped in desperate thinking. I know. I’ve been there myself, which explains why I voluntarily went back to the industry I vowed to leave for good not twice, but 3 times. I felt desperate and overwhelmed seeing the checkbook balance dwindle and “no thank you” letters flow in as I tried to change career paths. So, simply put, I gave up on my dream of pursuing the work life I wanted. This does not have to happen to you and it didn’t have to happen to me. By first being very clear about what you want and what you’re not willing to settle for, you can keep the dream alive. That next job may not look exactly like what you’ve got in mind, but it will be closer. Be protective of yourself while in transition mode. Put down the paper and turn off the TV or radio when the news starts to weigh you

20

FEBRUARY 17, 2017

Find people who understand your current situation and have encouraging words for you. Not everyone knows how to do this and may dash your plans without even realizing it. Many times these are people closest to us – family and friends who know us well and want what’s easiest and least painful for us. What we know is best for us sometimes is not the easiest however, so we go back to what’s comfortable because of the advice of loved ones. Someone recently asked me if she should tell everyone about her dream job she’s working toward. As much as we would like to share our excitement, it’s more important to look out for our plans and ideas and keep them carefully insulated, especially while they’re in a fragile development stage. Find people outside your closest circle – those already working in jobs and companies you’d love to try, fellow job seekers in the reception areas of places you’re applying and people in transition on online discussion groups. Find out what they’re doing, how they got there, where they’re headed, and what helpful suggestions they have to offer. Bounce your ideas and plans off of them and see what they think. Open up and ask. People are more willing to help than we realize and those who don’t know us well can have the most objective, beneficial opinions. One of the most powerful ways I know of to surround yourself with support is to join a group where people in transition gather to discuss their successes and challenges while learning how others are making progress. There’s real power in a meeting of like minds and similar situations where everyone feels supported and uplifted to reach for their goals. Groups like this Continued on p. 40

encourage each other to create visions and focus on what’s important to each of them personally. The best groups have no criticism or judgment of each other – only support and exchange of helpful ideas. I had the opportunity to see one of these groups in action just this summer. They each spoke briefly to the group about their backgrounds and target jobs, exchanged resumes, business cards, and most importantly, leads, referrals and ideas. For a room full of unemployed people, the overall feeling was one of utmost support and camaraderie. Where to find these groups? There are online discussion boards where you can have a virtual group with people from any geographic location, informal discussions among friends and colleagues at someone’s home or a coffee shop, or more formal groups with guest speakers and valuable tools and tips. Search the internet or form your own group and build that support system that will see you into a positive future. Q: I am an international student living in Houston. I’ll be graduating next year with a Hospitality Management Associate Degree. I get a chance to do internship and a year of OTP. I really hope to find a job in the hotel industry to apply what I have learned in school to real life situations, to get experience and learn from it. However, I don’t know where to start. What can I do to improve myself for a career opportunity? I don’t have any experience working in the industry. Does doing volunteer count as a plus point? Do you have any recommendations on a Hospitality/hotel related volunteer opportunity for me? Thank you. -Houston, Texas Reader

A: You’ve picked a fast growing industry,

and that’s a good thing! Volunteer work does count, but what they will look for is work in their industry. They want someone who has current experience in working at a hotel. You would need to get some advice from your DSO (Designated School Official) as to whether you would be able to actually work off-campus for an employer. There are strict work restrictions with an F-1 FEBRUARY 2017are generally visa. Students with17, F-1 visas

42

allowed to work on the campus of the university where they study but only for 20 hours or fewer per week. I believe that rule is in place because they want you to concentrate on making good grades and getting the most from your education. I’m not sure about any volunteer positions at hotels, because it might be a liability for the hotel if you had an accident and would put the hotel in a risky situation. Since I am not sure, you can call several hotels and ask their HR department if they ever need volunteers for any projects or events that they may have. It can’t hurt to ask!! Good luck!

Q:

I believe that I am facing age discrimination. I have worked in plants and refineries for over thirty years as an Instrument Fitter, and in management as both a General Foreman and a Tool Room Manager. I have experience as a Safety Auditor and in Job Site Hazard Recognition. I can see safety hazards that the untrained worker doesn’t recognize and walks on by. My problem is this: Employers don’t look at what I can do for them. They see the number of years that I have been

working and do the math to see what my age is. I am 66 years old and am collecting Social Security. I am looking for a position to supplement what I am earning on SS. I have had recruiters call me about positions and ask me what year I graduated from high school. When I tell them, they hang up. I believe I still have 3 good years in me because I am in good health and very seldom ever miss work. I am really tired of being turned down because of this. I can’t prove age discrimination but I know that is what is happening. I have been off work since January of 2015 because of a labor strike in Texas City and have been looking since then. I would like to continue in the Safety field if someone would just give me a break. I don’t require any insurance because I am on Medicare. If you have any ideas on how to break this hiring blockade, I would be surely be interested in hearing them, Thank you for your valuable time and consideration. -League City, Texas Reader

A:

The best way for you to get hired is as a consultant. Even though some companies might not hire you for a position, they would hire you as a consultant. That is basically the same position, but rather than be on the company’s payroll, you get a DBA at the courthouse and pay your own taxes. Usually consultants are paid more than employees because they do not have taxes withheld. You certainly have the background and experience to help a company with their safety training or with their compliance. If you have any ques t ions abou t interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.

Have a question for Diana? Have you recently moved to Houston from another state, country or just another part of Texas?

It does sound like age discrimination. If a recruiter asks what year you graduated high school, that recruiter has stepped over If you came here to get a job, I’d like the line. There are laws for a reason, and to hear about your experience. unless he/she is totally ignorant of EEOC Email: askdiana@jobsparx.com guidelines, the recruiter is aware. You could probably call the EEOC and even file a lawsuit. Those complaints are extremely difficult to prove and the lawsuits may take years to settle. ON YOUR OWN:

BECOMING SELF-SUFFICIENT

BY: DENNIS VILORIO

What does independent living mean to you? For young adults, the answer varies. Many high school graduates go off to college, living in dorms with roommates. Others enter the labor force right away, perhaps moving into an apartment of their own. Whatever their circumstances, young adults leave home as they move further into adulthood. In 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, over half of people ages 18 to 24 lived with their parents— compared with 15 percent of those ages 25 to 34. Your first steps toward living on your own will be steadier if you know what to expect and how to prepare for it. This article outlines some of the issues you might face as you become independent, including managing your money, establishing yourself at work, and finding a place to live.

Are you ready to live on your own? Living on your own, whether alone or with someone else, means you’ll be taking on new responsibilities. But it also offers a chance to grow. The following are among some of the considerations of what’s ahead.

Expenses Self reliance starts with financial independence. But as table 1 shows, typical

44

FEBRUARY 17, 2017

living expenses add up. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), housing alone accounted for about one third of total expenses for young adults in 2014. Transportation and food costs were another one third. “You soon learn that you can’t have everything you want,” says Tim Ranzetta, founder of a personal finance business.

Freedom If you’re like many young adults, you look forward to the freedom promised by becoming independent. Living on your own offers greater control over your life: where to go (and with whom), what to do, when to come home, and so on.

Self Growth Life on your own gives you the opportunity to learn more about yourself. You also develop skills, such as priority setting and meal planning, as you navigate everyday living. A single decision, such as how to furnish your bedroom, may come with a range of options and price tags. By learning about yourself and considering your priorities, you discover what matters most to you.

The Essentials of Autonomy Knowing you’re ready to be on your own is the easy part. Preparing to make it happen might be harder. This section outlines some of the work and

VOL. 22 ISSUE 1078

housing issues you need to understand to become self sufficient.

Work In addition to being your main source of income, a fulltime job is where you spend a large part of your time. According to BLS data, in 2014, employed people spent an average of 7.75 hours on the job on days they worked — nearly onethird of their day. Finding a job with the pay and benefits you need to support yourself is an important part of being independent. Once you have a job, you will need to present yourself professionally both during and after the workday. “Put your best self forward,” says Greynolds. “It’s best to err on the side of caution from the start.”

Getting A Job To search job openings, especially postings online, look for opportunities that match your skills. Identify these skills by asking yourself some questions. For example, which of your everyday tasks apply to an occupation? What special training do you have? What kind of work interests you?

Workplace dress codes may have varying degrees of rigidity. Guidelines that cover some of the main dress codes, including business casual and business formal, are widely available online.

Social Media How you act in person matters to your employer, but so does the way you appear online. On your social media accounts, set strict privacy settings to keep your private life private. You may also have to ask friends and family to remove personal things you don’t want employers to find. In contrast, make your professional presence online easy to find. Professional networking sites may help you find collaborators, connect with employees of a company you’d like to work for, and promote your skills. Setting up an online portfolio with references and work samples, for example, shows prospective employers what you can do.

Housing

Finding a fulltime job that suits you takes time and persistence. Your network is a great resource. Talk to friends, relatives, and colleagues who can offer guidance or connect you to prospective employers. Your school’s job center or alumni association may also be a useful resource. Take the initiative to find as many leads as you can.

When it comes to living on your own, you have two housing options: renting or buying. (On the path to full independence, some people may choose to stay with relatives for free or nominal rent.) Before committing yourself to something expensive or long term, make sure you feel settled in your job and city of choice. “Jobs don’t always work out,” says Barrington, “so give yourself some time to stay flexible and learn what you like.”

When you look for a job, it’s important to have a realistic expectation of what you might earn in your chosen occupation in a particular city or region. Jobseeking decisions often depend on where you can find work. Employment for economists, for example, is concentrated in Washington, D.C. Other occupations, such as registered nurses and secretaries, are more likely to be spread throughout the country.

Postponing a longterm housing commitment is common: Most young adults are not homeowners. According to Census Bureau data, in the fourth quarter of 2015, about 35 percent of young adults under age 35 owned a home— compared with nearly 64 percent of all adults who owned one. Whether you decide to rent or buy, consider location and other expenses in choosing where to live.

Earnings & Benefits

Location

Employers pay a wage or salary for the work you do and may also offer nonwage compensation, commonly known as benefits.

Your housing search depends on the market in your area. If housing demand is low, you may have a lot of spaces to choose from—and might even be able to negotiate price. For example, landlords in lowdemand areas may offer a free month of rent if you sign a lease.

The number of workers and their earnings increase with age. This is because workers in younger age groups may not be employed full time, year round while completing their studies. Each of these age groups made less than $825, the median weekly earnings for all workers over 16 years old. Median earnings are the point at which half of workers made more than that amount, and half made less. Employee benefits vary by employer and may be as important as your wages. These benefits include compensation that an employer pays in full (such as time off for vacation) as well as plans (such as health insurance and retirement contributions) that an employer helps its employees pay for. Be ready to negotiate for benefits as well as for salary. “You have to show that you’re worth their investment,” says Greynolds, “and employers need to show that they’ll take care of you.” Earnings and number of workers by age group, 4th quarter 2015 averages, not seasonally adjusted Age Group Number of Workers Median Usual Weekly Earnings 16 to 19 years 1,079,000 $410 20 to 24 years 8,736,000 $513 25 to 34 years 26,693,000 $743 Total, 16 years and over 109,913,000 $825 Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Current Population Survey.

Dress Code Different types of employers have different dress codes. For example, a financial services firm might expect you to wear a suit, but an information technology company might allow a tshirt and jeans. Ask your employer what kind of attire you are expected to wear.

But in some markets, especially major cities, the opposite is often true: Demand is high, limiting choices and pushing up the price. When visiting rental properties, show prospective landlords that you’re ready and responsible by bringing a copy of your credit score, a blank check, and a list of references. Before shopping to buy, visit a mortgage lender and get preapproved for a loan. Focus on what’s important to you. Consider price, the space, the commute, and the neighborhood. You may pay more for a place near public transportation, for example, but its location may include other conveniences, such as shorter commuting time. Visit different neighborhoods and walk around them to get a feel for what they offer.

Make the Move All the responsibilities of setting out on your own can make the effort seem daunting. But remember, you don’t have to do everything at once—and it’s OK if you don’t get each detail right on the first try. “Approach each challenge piece by piece, calmly and without pressure,” says Barrington. “Learn from your mistakes, and you’ll come up to speed at your own pace.” Being on your own is a big adjustment, Greynolds adds, so it’s a good idea to reach out to others as you make the transition. “You’re not the only one who’s uncomfortable or scared,” she says. “Other people have had to deal with the same problems, and you can learn from their advice. You’ll find that people are more supportive than you imagine.” Read the full article at https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2016/article/living-on-your-own.htm

The best one I’ve seen is called FreshBooks. I like it so much that we’re actually endorsing it on some of our podcasts and a few other places. It’s a cloud-based program for small business, and it’s a pretty simple accounting system. Honestly, you don’t want anything super complicated for small-business accounting. You just need something that allows you to write out invoices and keep up with your expenses while categorizing them. It’s important you know what’s going on in your business — to be able to continually analyze what’s happening — and have the ability to look in your rearview mirror and see if anything’s coming up behind you!
