Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y

DEBT AND INCOME CRISIS Dear Dave, I received a call the other day from a company saying it could negotiate the balance on my credit cards to a lesser amount. The caller also said they could get me a zero-percent interest rate until the debts were paid off, and then the accounts would be closed. I’m kind of starting over again financially, because I sold a company I had run for almost 15 years, then got into real estate and lost almost everything. I’m making just enough to squeeze by, and my credit card debt totals $40,000. Would this be a good idea? Bill Dear Bill, No, this is not a good idea. You’re looking at two major problems with a company such as this one. One, they will absolutely destroy whatever credit you may have. Their plan is to take your cash, and spend some time beating down the credit card companies until they agree to accept a lesser amount. Then, they use your cash to settle loans you will have — by that time — defaulted on. This will put you in a situation very similar to if you had filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Stay away from these people. You have an income crisis, in addition to a debt crisis, at this point. For starters, I want you to start living on a tight, written, monthly budget. I’m talking rice and beans, no vacations, and no eating out until you pay off this debt. Where your income is concerned, maybe you should consider getting back into the kind of business you ran previously for a while. Look for a managerial or supervisory position in that area, at least until you’re able to get back on your feet and save some cash. Finally, cut up the credit cards, close the accounts, and put as much money as you can spare toward paying off that debt using the debt snowball system. Never go back into debt again! —Dave

PAY OFF HOUSE FIRST? My husband and I are in our forties. We have no children, and we bring home $95,000 a year combined. We’re also debt-free except for our home. We owe just $10,000 on the house, and can take care of that in a few months. Would it be okay to rearrange the Baby Steps a bit, and pay off our home before getting serious about saving for retirement? Nan Dear Nan, I don’t usually give folks any wiggle room when it comes to sticking with the proper order of the Baby Steps. But if you’re that close to being completely debt-free, I don’t see anything wrong with paying off the house first. Most people I talk to still have anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000 left on their mortgages. This is a little bit different story, however, and you two are obviously managing your money well. Knock out that mortgage, and start pouring at least 15 percent of your income into retirement. You’re going to love the feeling — and the freedom — that comes with being completely debt-free! —Dave

Q: I have been looking for a management position, and people keep

talking with me about jobs that are defi nitely not management. My resume clearly shows my years of management, you’d think they would see that I have the experience. I know that sometimes you have to start lower so that you can prove yourself, but I don’t want people ordering me around. A: Apply only for management jobs. Don’t send your resume for a job that you don’t want because “they” don’t know that you would snub your nose at starting lower and working your way up. Most companies prefer promoting from within, and that doesn’t suit your career goals. I might explain, though, that you will always have someone telling you what to do even if you are the manager. I would not want to be the person reporting to you if you think being a manager means “ordering” people around. If your attitude is that you have to be in charge, ask if they have any management openings before you waste your time and theirs interviewing for a job that you think is beneath you.

Make outbound sales of utility and telecommunication packages to customers. Ideal candidate will have at least 6 months’ Call Center, Customer Service or Sales experience.

Q: We have an open offi ce, and I’ve gotten used to being in the middle of all these desks. We have a new person who started a month ago, and she is still griping about it. She feels like she’s in a fi shbowl or everyone’s watching her and can’t quit talking about it. I actually gave her an offi ce tour when she was interviewed. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to her that we don’t each have a private offi ce. She isn’t a bad person other than this, but I know that people have already gone to HR to complain about her attitude. Is there any way that I can tell her to keep her opinions private?

A: Some people are complainers. They would complain if they were in the middle of a bed of roses, and there isn’t much that can cure their urge to share. Take her to lunch and let her know that she should tone it down. Open offi ce means that everyone has to listen to her griping, and that’s annoying. Tell her that some other people may not enjoy it either, but talking about it constantly makes them all feel uncomfortable. Good luck because changing a negative person’s outlook is nearly impossible. Q: My boss has a bad habit of telling me early in the morning that he

wants to talk with me later and then delaying it all day. By the time we talk, I am convinced he is fi ring me for some crazy reason. It makes me so nervous that I almost can’t get my work done! When he fi nally gets around to talking with me I feel like I’m about to cry. It’s never anything important, and he has never criticized me or how I do the job. What can I do to get him out of this habit?

WELDERS, CUTTERS, SOLDERERS, AND BRAZERS Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers use hand-held or remotely controlled equipment to join or cut metal parts. They also fill holes, indentations, or seams in metal products.

large objects, such as ships, railroad cars, automobiles, buildings, and aircraft. Some operate and monitor cutting machines similar to those used by welding machine operators.

Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers typically do the following:

Solderers and brazers also use heat to join two or more metal objects together. Soldering and brazing are similar, except that the temperature used to melt the filler metal is lower in soldering. Soldering uses metals with a melting point below 840 degrees Fahrenheit. Brazing uses metals with a higher melting point.

• Study blueprints, sketches, or specifications • Calculate the dimensions of parts to be welded • Inspect structures or materials to be welded • Ignite torches or start power supplies • Monitor the welding process to avoid overheating • Maintain equipment and machinery. Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. In this process, heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. Welding also is used to join steel beams in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, power plants, and refineries. Welders work in a wide variety of industries, from car racing to manufacturing. The work that welders do and the equipment they use vary with the industry. Arc welding, the most common type of welding today, uses electrical currents to create heat and bond metals together—but there are more than 100 different processes that a welder can use. The type of weld is usually determined by the types of metals being joined and the conditions under which the welding is to take place. Cutters use heat to cut and trim metal objects to specific dimensions. Their work is closely related to that of welders. However, instead of joining metals, cutters use the heat from an electric arc, a stream of ionized gas called plasma, or burning gases to cut and trimFEBRUARY metal objects to specific dimensions. Cutters also dismantle 23, 2018 46

Soldering and brazing workers use molten metal to join two pieces of metal. However, the metal added during the soldering or brazing process has a melting point lower than that of the piece, so only the added metal is melted, not the piece. Therefore, these processes normally do not create distortions or weaknesses in the piece, as can occur with welding. Soldering commonly is used to make electrical and electronic circuit boards, such as computer chips. Soldering workers tend to work with small pieces that must be positioned precisely. Brazing often is used to connect cast iron and thinner metals that the higher temperatures of welding would warp. Brazing also can be used to apply coatings to parts in order to reduce wear and protect against corrosion.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers held about 404,800 jobs in 2016. The largest employers of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers were as follows: Manufacturing Specialty trade Contractors Self-employed Workers Repair and Maintenance Merchant Wholesalers, Durable Goods VOL. 23 ISSUE 1129

61% 7% 5% 4% 4%

Welders and cutters may work outdoors, often in inclement weather, or indoors, sometimes in a confined area designed to contain sparks and glare. When working outdoors, they may work on a scaffold or platform high off the ground. In addition, they may have to lift heavy objects and work in awkward positions while bending, stooping, or standing to work overhead.

INJURIES AND ILLNESSES Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations. They are often exposed to a number of hazards, including very hot materials and the intense light created by the arc. They wear safety shoes, heat-resistant gloves, goggles, masks with protective lenses, and other equipment to prevent burns and eye injuries and to protect them from falling objects. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that welders work in safely ventilated areas in order to avoid danger from inhaling gases and fine particles that can result from welding processes. However, they can minimize injuries if they follow safety procedures.

WORK SCHEDULES Most welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers work full time, and overtime is common. Many manufacturing firms have two or three 8- to 12-hour shifts each day, allowing the firm to continue production around the clock if needed. As a result, welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers may work evenings and weekends.

How to Become a Welder, Cutter, Solderer, or Brazer EDUCATION AND TRAINING A high school diploma or equivalent, combined with technical and on-the-job training, is typically required for anyone to become a welder, cutter, solderer, or brazer. High school technical education courses and postsecondary institutions, such as vocational–technical institutes, community colleges, and private welding, soldering, and brazing schools offer formal technical training. In addition, the various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces operate welding and soldering schools. Courses in blueprint reading, shop mathematics, mechanical drawing, physics, chemistry, and metallurgy are helpful. An understanding of electricity also is helpful, and knowledge of computers is gaining importance as welding, soldering, and brazing machine operators become more responsible for programming robots and other computer-controlled machines. Although numerous employers are willing to hire inexperienced entry-level workers and train them on the job, many prefer to hire workers who have been through training or credentialing programs. Even entry-level workers with formal technical training still receive several months of on-the-job training.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS Courses leading to certification are offered at many welding schools. For example, the American Welding Society offers the Certified Welder designation. VOL. 23 ISSUE 1129

Some welding positions require general certification in welding or certification in specific skills, such as Certified Welding Inspector and Certified Robotic Arc Welding . The Institute for Printed Circuits offers certification and training in soldering. In industries such as aerospace and defense, which need highly skilled workers, many employers require these certifications. Certification can show mastery of lead-free soldering techniques, which are important to many employers. Some employers pay the cost of training and testing for employees.

IMPORTANT QUALITIES: •

• • •

• •

Detail oriented. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers perform precision work, often with straight edges and minimal flaws. The ability to see details and characteristics of the joint and detect changes in molten metal flows requires good eyesight and attention to detail. Manual dexterity. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers must have a steady hand to hold a torch in one place. Workers must also have good hand–eye coordination. Physical stamina. The ability to endure long periods of standing and repetitious movements is important for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers. Physical strength. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers must be in good physical condition. They often must lift heavy pieces of metal and move welding or cutting equipment, and they sometimes bend, stoop, or reach while working. Spatial-orientation skills. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers must read, understand, and interpret two- and three-dimensional diagrams in order to fit metal products correctly. Technical skills. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers must operate manual or semiautomatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments.

Wages for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers vary with the worker’s experience and skill level, the industry, and the size of the company. Most welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers work full time, and overtime is common. Many manufacturing firms have two or three 8- to 12-hour shifts each day, allowing the firm to continue production around the clock if needed. As a result, welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers may work evenings and weekends. Employment of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment growth reflects the need for welders in manufacturing because of the importance and versatility of welding as a manufacturing process. The basic skills of welding are similar across industries, so welders can easily shift from one industry to another, depending on where they are needed most. For example, welders who are laid off in the automotive manufacturing industry may be able to find work in the oil and gas industry. The nation’s aging infrastructure will require the expertise of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers to help rebuild bridges, highways, and buildings. Also, the construction of new power generation facilities and, specifically, pipelines transporting natural gas and oil may result in new jobs.

10 WAYS TO PUT MORE

IN YOUR PAYCHECK

by Robin Ryan, Author of 60 Seconds + You’re Hired Lisa, a program manager called asking for by Ernest B. Bray help on dealing with Salary Negotiations. She exclaimed, “I can’t do it! Robin I’m terrified of trying to negotiate for the salary offer.” It took a lot of coaching and some advice that she had nothing to lose if she followed the strategies I laid out. She did and was astonished that they concede quickly and she’s making $8,000 more than they originally offered and she also secured an extra week of vacation. The largest raises you’re likely to ever obtain in your career come from quitting your job and going to work for another employer, but only if you avoid the minefield of mistakes people often make. The Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) just released a rather shocking survey result. It noted that over the course of a person’s career, anyone who did not negotiate for a higher salary every time they started a new job would actually earn $500,000 to $1,000,000 LESS in lifetime income than an individual who was savvy when handling their salary compensation package.

These ten negotiation strategies will enable you to earn more. 1. TRY Most women are afraid to try and by nature devalue themselves. They don’t recognize their full worth in the workplace and rarely demand it. The unemployed typically feel they sit in a difficult spot. They often need the job and the employer knows it. No matter what your situation is, you will increase your take home pay if you negotiate. My research has uncovered that the Employer’s first offer is typically not their best offer and significantly lower than the amount that employer is willing to pay for you to join their team. 2. KNOW WHAT YOUR SKILLS ARE WORTH Do some research to learn exactly what you should expect to be paid for your years of experience, education, certifications and any special training you possess. Try Glassdoor and Payscale.com both offer free salary surveys that offer detailed information to help you get an estimate on what you should be 50 FEBRUARY 23, 2018 earning.

3. FOCUS ON THE EMPLOYER’S NEEDS Begin your conversation with the hiring manager, by reselling yourself. Reaffirm the reasons they want you, the skills you’ll bring, and how you’ll solve their problems. Mention your key strengths and experience plus stress how quickly you will be productive. In other words, give them reasons to pay you more. 4. RESTATE YOUR INTEREST A solid way to bridge this negotiation is to say, “I’m really interested in the position. I was a little disappointed that the offer was lower than I expected, especially since I have this experience or these skills (note something specific) and will come up to speed quickly.” Smile, then be quiet and remain quiet while the employer makes the next move. 5. NEGOTIATE TO GET THE MONEY UP FRONT Cash remains king. Promised bonuses, raises, stock options, and reviews in a few months all have a way of never happening down the line. Every dollar you negotiate into the salary base is more money you can spend on things you and your family want. Work toward the extra money up front. These negotiations could give you in minutes what would take years to achieve with raises. 6. BE SPECIFIC WHEN IT COUNTS The employer may ask you what figure you have in mind. Know what you want and state it. Be willing to wait. The hiring manager may say he or she needs to go back and ask their boss to get the additional dollars. If they want you, they’ll be your advocate and almost always come back with more than they originally offered. Patience here almost always pays off. 7. DON’T FORGET TO NEGOTIATE THE PERKS More vacation can often be negotiated. This is easier for many employers to give out than money. Nicely make your request, stating how much more time off you want. You can reveal what you current vacation level is, and ask if they can meet it or at least offer more vacation than stated. Also, review the medical plan and the deductible and

dependent costs. Many companies’ health plans offer lousy coverage with $5,000 to $10,000 deductibles every year. You can argue for a higher salary to compensate for switching medical plans because of these high deductibles. Many companies have been willing to add to salaries for this reason. Additionally, if you or a family member has a chronic illness, thoroughly check out the new company’s insurance plan so you know what is covered and what you will pay so you don’t get any expensive surprises. 8. PRACTICE Think through the negotiation interview. Visualize a successful outcome. Then ask a friend to role-play the interview with you. Defend why you are worth more money and additional perks. Did you convince them? Listen to their feedback. This preparation will decrease your anxiety and increase your confidence and success. 9. KNOW YOUR BOTTOM LINE Only you can decide when the offer is too low. There will be other offers, but they may be weeks down the road. Never ever bluff. Offers can be withdrawn when a job hunter says, “$66,000 is as low as I will accept.” Be prepared to keep looking. Sometimes that is the right move for you. Decide on the lowest figure you can reasonably accept, one that will cover your bills and allow you to concentrate on succeeding in the job and not immediately start looking for another, higher-paying one. 10. GET AN EMPLOYMENT LETTER You can offer to write it or the employer can, but be sure the employer signs it. This letter should outline all the terms of your employment, covering salary, signing bonuses, stock options, starting date, benefits, and particularly noting anything different from the organization’s normal policies. Too many promises are made and quickly forgotten once you start the job. Get the details in writing so there are no misunderstandings later. People who have failed to do so have suffered when the promised extra week of vacation was “forgotten” once they started. A written agreement protects what you’ve negotiated for. These letters are very common, and it’s ISSUE 1129 wise –VOL. and23 necessary – to obtain one.

WORKFORCE SHORTAGES AND YOUR CAREER BY BILL RYAN

I guess it’s a sign of improvement when a new problem can be seen as less egregious than a previously harder to solve problem. For much of the past 8 years we have concerned ourselves with getting people back to work-any work. To a large extent that has happened. Unemployment rates and the number of workers who can say they have a job are back to pre-recession levels. So now we have the “luxury” of concentrating on a replacement problem. That is the issue of workforce and labor shortages. U.S. employers are struggling to find qualified workers in a number of fields, resulting in business expansion difficulties and by extension national economic constraints. It doesn’t sound as bad as the employment bounce-back the recession threw at us and it shouldn’t be. However if left unsolved it could become another factor reducing our global competitiveness and economic growth spurring calls for talent immigration, automation, and offshoring. At an individual level the college student trying to select a major, the college graduate attempting to launch a career, the established professional looking to make a career transition, and the entrepreneur seeking lucrative opportunities are among those who may benefit from an analysis of where the workforce shortages currently exist and where employment projections are anticipated. Although such knowledge and considerations are not necessarily paramount determiners of one’s career development they are worth investigating to see if an alignment exists between these trends and one’s enduring or potential value proposition. There are several reasons for the decline of qualified workers with demographics being the big one. The aging of Baby Boomers is naturally leading to more retirements and domestically there aren’t enough replacements. Ten years ago 400,000 workers per year retired. That number has risen to 1.2 million today. And the older population creates increased demand in fields such as healthcare where more workers are needed than in the past. For example physical therapists, occupational therapists, and even doctors are already in short supply and are still expected to be in the future. 23, 2018 52 FEBRUARY However it isn’t just in healthcare where shortages exist.

To be honest it does not appear that labor deficits are confined to just several industries but rather that it is a more widespread phenomenon. Even declining industries, such as manufacturing are experiencing acute scarcities. Of course not having enough workers trained with specific skills sets compounds the problem, but largely it is coming down to some basic math. Our bench is not populated enough to fill the number of vacating positions. This should be good news for working-aged people. It suggests there could potentially be many fields and openings to pick from. Other benefits over time should include rising wages and continuously improving working conditions to retain talent. To best position yourself to take advantage of this general opportunity some other trend lines should be considered. The Bureau of Labor Statistics foresees service sector jobs capturing 95% of newly created positions between now and 2024. Healthcare as mentioned above and social assistance jobs together will become the largest area of employment, surpassing government and business services jobs. Technical occupations will also grow in number and demand looking forward. Automation will eliminate some jobs to be sure, but more likely is that technology will transform jobs that still need a person involved. The energy, transportation, and data analysis sectors are among those in need of technically trained people who can interact with and leverage technology productively. I don’t want to treat too lightly the menace workforce shortages can have economically and socially. It is a serious issue, especially for some businesses poised to grow, but compared to the recessionary years I see more opportunity than threat here for the existing workforce and new entries to it to ensure they are selecting careers that can be their best fit.
