Just be reasonable and use common sense. If you spend $3,000 to stay open, and you’re making $700, you’d dissolve it, right? But as long as you don’t have fees that are making you cringe, I’d probably leave it in place.
Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y
— Dave
H E L P I N G DA D Dear Dave,
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money & business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.
D I S S O LV E T H E L LC ?
My dad has been really bad with money his entire life. Anytime he would get into trouble, my grandparents would always bail him out. This time he came to my wife and I, asking for $350 to get out of overdraft at the bank. We’re trying to live on a budget and get control of our finances, and $350 would make things kind of tight at the moment. What do you think we should do?
- Jeremy
Dear Dave, My wife and I are debt-free, plus she has a business giving music lessons. We formed an LLC last year when she had several students and was making over $3,000 a month, but that all changed when our first baby arrived. Now, she has only a few students, and they bring in around $700 per month. Should we dissolve the LLC?
- Ben
Dear Ben, First, congratulations on being debt-free and new parents. Happy New Year to you all! In most states, the only upfront cost for an LLC is the money you pay for the initial set up. There may be a small fee for a business license and subsequent annual renewal, but that generally doesn’t add up to much. Then, there’s the money you pay for filing your tax return on the LLC once a year. Even if you live in a state where there are other fees to consider, as long as the cost of maintaining the LLC wasn’t killing you, I’d recommend keeping it in place. You went to the trouble of opening it, and you just might use it again someday. Even if your wife is staying home with the baby, she just might be able to take on more students again as time goes by.

JANUARY 13, 2017
Dear Jeremy, I understand feeling an obligation to help your dad. But there’s a lesson here that dad needs to learn, and it’s something that goes much deeper than the money or helping out a family member. You have to do the right thing, no matter how dad reacts to this. Right now, the right thing is taking care of your family and not putting them in jeopardy. So my answer to dad would be no. Another thing that needs to happen is for the definition of “help” to change. When you say he’s been irresponsible with money his whole life, giving him $350 won’t help — and it will make you an enabler. Just handing him $350 will actually hurt him, and it will give him the idea he can continue being dumb with money and hit you up for cash anytime. Like I said, I understand the pull of helping out a parent. So if you feel this is something you absolutely must do, I would advise making the $350 contingent on the fact that he begin and complete a financial counseling course. Be gentle when you talk to him, and let him know it hurts to see him struggling. But let him know, too, it’s his responsibility to work through his debts and take care of his own finances!
— Dave

HEALTHCARE JOBS
YOU MIGHT
NOT
KNOW ABOUT Healthcare careers provide the chance to help people, do interesting technical work, and earn relatively high salaries. But that’s not all. The healthcare industry also offers some of the best employment opportunities in the economy. As career fields go, healthcare is hot. And there are lots of cool jobs, including some that aren’t as well known. Find out about three of them here. Of the dozens of different healthcare occupations, however, many people are familiar with only a few, such as nurse, doctor, and physical therapist. This article takes a look at some healthcare careers you might not know about.
Biostatisticians apply statistics to medical
and public-health research. Almost daily, the media report new research findings related to human health. Maybe an experimental treatment for HIV has been found to work better than current therapies. New data might reinforce the link between high blood pressure and heart disease. Or perhaps a report reveals dangers in treatment options, such as the risk in using smoking cessation drugs. Health-related findings such as these, or others concerning healthcare costs and quality, are usually based on the work of biostatisticians.
JOB DUTIES. Biostatisticians design statistical
studies, decide how to gather data, and analyze the data. To help a hospital measure the incidence and cause of secondary infections among patients, for example, biostatisticians would first determine the required sample size (the number of patients from which data must be collected for the results to be statistically sound). Then, biostatisticians must decide how to collect the data—from patients, patient records, or hospital staff—and they also might help to determine the types of questions to ask and the method to use in asking them. Designed one way, for example, the study might require telephoning patients for followup; designed another way, it might require drawing patients’ blood to track a physical effect. In addition, biostatisticians analyze the data that they or others have collected. They decide which calculations to do and use statistical pro13, 2017 38 JANUARY gramming software to turn raw data into usable
statistics. Often, biostatisticians work closely with other experts, such as medical professionals or health policy analysts. Each study that biostatisticians undertake presents unique technical challenges. That variety is what draws many to the career. “I love the opportunity to help people with data problems and to look at a different issue almost daily,” says Peter Lachenbruch, a biostatistician with the Department of Public Health at Oregon State University. Working with data also can be frustrating, however. Difficulties frequently arise in dealing with so much information, so adhering to standard statistical procedures is essential for accurate analysis. “Sometimes, someone brings me a data set that has been collected haphazardly, without attention to measurement issues,” says Lachenbruch. “I have to clean and edit that data [set].” That process is usually time consuming, he says, but it’s also gratifying to turn less-than-perfect data into useful information.
QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING. Biostatisticians need a strong understanding of, and interest in, science and mathematics; the ability to think logically; and the patience and determination to follow a problem to its conclusion. Effective speaking and writing skills are necessary for communicating research results. The ability to work well on a team is Biostatisticians often work closely with health policy analysts and other experts. also important, because biostatisticians often work with healthcare practitioners, managers, scientists, and other statisticians. Furthermore, biostatisticians must be able to adapt when projects don’t turn out as planned or take longer than expected to complete. High school students can start to explore the occupation by getting a solid background in sci-
by Tamara Dillon ence, mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Not surprisingly, statistical knowledge is essential for these workers, as is familiarity with common statistical programming software. A bachelor’s degree with a major in biostatistics, statistics, or mathematics is usually the minimum requirement for entry-level positions. Most jobs, however, require biostatisticians to have a master’s or doctoral degree.
Cytotechnologists
are disease detectives, spending much of their time peering through microscopes for clues to disease within cells. Studying cells from nearly every organ of the body, these workers search for patterns and abnormalities that might be evidence of cancer or other medical conditions, such as viral or bacterial infections. Job duties. Cytotechnologists work closely with pathologists, the medical doctors who diagnose the causes and nature of disease. The information cytotechnologists provide is vital to the specialists responsible for making an accurate diagnosis and for developing an appropriate treatment plan. For example, a cytotechnologist might discover that a cell sample is benign or, if cancerous, the type of cancer. When a patient’s cells need to be studied, a sample is taken and sent to a cytotechnologist for testing. Cytotechnologists working in smaller laboratories might need to prepare slides of the cells for examination; in larger labs, however, assistants do this preparatory work. Cytotechnologists scrutinize the cells through a microscope, looking for subtle distinctions in the color, size, and shape of cell structures. By noting differences, cytotechnologists identify which cell variations are normal and which might indicate disease. A cytotechnologist who discovers evidence of disease marks the slide for the pathologist and then writes up the findings, often taking photos to support conclusions. The report, photos, and, sometimes, slides themselves are given to a pathologist, who makes the final diagnosis of the patient. Cytotechnologists occasionally see rare conditions and interesting specimens, which they then share with the medical community. Some cytotechnologists teach pathology resi22 ISSUE 1073training programs at dents inVOL. cytotechnology
hospitals or in universities. Informing others about their work is challenging at times, because of its relative obscurity. Even those studying to enter the occupation don’t always understand what they’re getting into, says Joe Walker, a cytotechnology education coordinator at Albany College in New York. “Many of our students didn’t know what cytotechnology was and had never even heard of the career,” he says. But once in the program, he says, students embrace the variety that the work offers. “It’s interesting and new and different every day.” This variety and the possibility for discoveries are part of what cytotechnologists enjoy about their jobs. “People think that you sit down and look at slides all day long,” Walker says. “While we do spend a lot of time in front of a microscope, it is exciting to see anywhere from 50,000-plus cells on the slide. And each one is different.”
gical drapes. As the time for surgery approaches, these technologists observe patients’ vital signs, check charts, and assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves. During the operation, surgical technologists pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants. They might hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count pieces of equipment. Surgical technologists also help to prepare, care for, and send specimens to a laboratory for analysis. They might apply dressings to the incision areas or operate some equipment. Highly trained technologists assist with more specialized tasks, such as controlling blood flow.
High school students interested in a career as a cytotechnologist can prepare by taking courses in mathematics and the sciences. Entry-level cytotechnologists usually need at least a bachelor’s degree in cytotechnology or a related subject. Some States require cytotechnologists to be licensed, but licensure requirements vary by State. Many employers prefer to hire cytotechnologists who are certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology, which requires either a bachelor’s degree in cytotechnology or a degree in another subject and a certificate in cytotechnology, as well as a passing score on a board-ofregistry exam. Certificate programs are offered by universities, colleges, and hospitals and last about 1 to 2 years.
Surgical technologists
assist in surgical operations. They work under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesiologists, or other surgical personnel. The scope of their work depends on the laws of the State and the policies of the facility in which they work, but most do a variety of tasks before, during, and after an operation.
JOB DUTIES. Before an operation, surgical tech-
nologists help to prepare the operating room. They gather equipment and check to make sure that everything is working properly. They also help to prepare patients for surgery, transport them to the operating room, position them on the VOL. them 22 ISSUE operating table, and cover with1073 sterile sur-
Worklife pros and cons
Like most careers, these healthcare occupations have both rewards and drawbacks. The work can sometimes seem draining, but biostatiscians, cytotechnologists, and surgical technologists focus on their main objective: helping people. Many of these healthcare workers say they chose their careers because of a desire to help people. Even when they perform their duties far from patients, these workers help to save lives and improve health. “What we do makes a huge difference in patient care,” says cytotechnology education coordinator Joe Walker. “Our work is essential for the correct diagnosis. And a correct diagnosis leads to the best treatment and outcome. It’s satisfying to know that our work helps so many people.” Along with the satisfaction they get from helping others, many people in these occupations enjoy being part of a team. And relatively high wages are another draw for those in healthcare careers.
Qualifications and training. Most cytotechnologists enjoy solving puzzles. They are fascinated by science, and they like working in a laboratory setting. Cytotechnologists must be able to communicate well, both orally and in writing, to document their findings and to consult with pathologists and other experts. They also must be able to focus on details and be comfortable making decisions and assuming responsibility, because their preliminary interpretations of cell samples can affect the pathologist’s diagnosis. Moreover, cytotechnologists should work well under pressure.
degree in surgical technology.
After an operation, surgical technologists take patients to the recovery room. They help to clean and restock the operating room and to prepare it for the next operation. Surgical technologists are part of a team. The chance to work closely with other medical professionals often draws people to the occupation. And the medical knowledge and experience that these workers gain attract people who are considering other healthcare careers. For example, with additional education, surgical technologists can advance to sales positions with surgical supply companies or perform inventory control management.
QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING. Surgical
technologists must be able to work well with others and accept responsibility. They need to work quickly and efficiently, even under stress, to have instruments ready in the operating room. “This job can be fast paced, complicated, and demanding, both physically and mentally,” says Patricia Eder, a surgical technologist for a healthcare provider in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Taking high school classes in health and science is a good way to prepare for further study in surgical technology. Summer or volunteer experience in a hospital also provides useful exposure to the work, especially because surgical technologists should be comfortable watching operations and working around blood and other bodily substances. Most surgical technologists receive formal training in vocational and technical schools, hospitals, or community colleges. These programs, which provide both classroom training and supervised clinical experience, usually take from 9 months to 2 years to complete and lead to a certificate or a
The variety of job tasks is another bonus. Biostatisticians and cytotechnologists, in particular, can move into different types of specialties. And experience also gives these workers new skills so that they can advance to other healthcarerelated careers. For example, they can try out one kind of job before deciding to get additional training to become a nurse, doctor, or other healthcare worker. Some educational programs are designed specifically to help aspiring healthcare professionals pursue more education by allowing them to earn an associate degree while working. Working in healthcare jobs is also difficult. In many laboratories, for example, fewer workers do more tasks to process the increasing numbers and kinds of tests being performed. Some labs may have trouble finding qualified workers, which can be detrimental to the workloads and morale of the existing staff. In addition, some workers might find the responsibility of these occupations stressful. Because there is little room for error, mistakes can result in serious health consequences for patients. Fortunately, the procedures that are in place make high-risk errors less likely. Other times, it is the absence of high-level responsibility that creates a challenge. Some welltrained healthcare workers, for example, might find themselves doing routine tasks and underusing their more advanced skills. When this happens, many focus on the fact that even in performing routine work, they are helping people. Most healthcare workers take precautions to minimize risk and ensure their safety, especially when handling biological material. In a laboratory or operating room, these precautions include the use of protective clothing, masks, gloves, goggles, and hoods, as needed. Repetitive motion injuries in the hands and fingers are also common in workers who spend hours at a microscope, computer, or other machine.

Recruitment 101:
7 Ways to Attract and Secure the Candidate
Best
It's important to remember when recruiting that it's not just the prospective candidates that need to sell themselves. If you want to attract and appoint the best of the best, you need to market your vacancy and the business to potential applicants. Make sure you are considering the seven key areas below at all stages of the recruitment process.
Remuneration
Be specific about the salary (or salary range if dependent on experience). Don't say "competitive" when ultimately you know what you're willing to spend. The best candidates won't waste their time following up on job ads that aren't specific, not least because the inference of not publishing a figure is that it's probably not competitive. If you're not confident about publishing a salary figure for fear of putting prospective candidates off, you need to consider making it more competitive. Sell the whole remuneration package, even if some elements are discretionary based on achievement of targets or wider business performance. Make it clear if these additional payments are not guaranteed, but use them to illustrate that base salary is not the only thing on offer. This helps if you can't match the salaries offered by competitors. Don't forget to include overtime opportunities. Some businesses don't have any budget whatsoever for this; if you do, use this as a selling point, even if overtime is not guaranteed.
BeneďŹ ts
Sell the full benefits package. These are non-cash incentives and you must promote them as part of the overall deal. They could be subsidized facilities, such as a staff restaurant, shop or gym. Or you might offer employee discounts with particular retailers or suppliers, or share investment programs. Don't overlook these things, as they can be a powerful incentive.
APPLICANTS MIGHT ALREADY HAVE THEIR HEART SET ON A CAREER IN YOUR BUSINESS SPECIFICALLY, BUT IT’S LIKELY THAT THE MAJORITY WERE ATTRACTED FOR OTHER REASONS.

Job description
Most people will want to know how they will learn about the business and their role if they are successful. If you have an established training framework for inducting new employees, make sure you market this in recruitment material. Likewise, if there are learning and development programs to enhance employees' skills and knowledge, and by extension their chances of progression, explain this.
It's essential that the job description is an accurate reflection of the day-to-day responsibilities, but equally important that it makes the best of them. Make sure those drafting your job descriptions have strong written skills and a wide vocabulary, so the documents are as appealing as possible. Consider asking your marketing team to review and offer comment on how they could better sell the role. Applicants will always be impressed by a business that invests in its employees. Interview experience
Perhaps the best opportunity you have to sell the role and the business to applicants is during the interview, when you have a captive audience. Make sure a candidate's experience, from arrival at reception to leaving the building, is slick, seamless and professional. Pick the smartest room available and be on your best behavior; the interviewee will be making a judgement on the business based on your
performance as its representative. Prepare for questions at the end of the interview; don't risk embarrassing yourself and the company by stumbling over a question from a well-researched candidate because your knowledge is found wanting. Use the interview as an opportunity to give candidates a tour of the workplace, selecting the areas of the business that will impress and inspire. This will show openness and honesty as well as giving applicants a tangible sense of what they've read about and discussed in interview. Taking account of all of the above, scrutinize your current recruitment and selection process and see how well it sizes up. It's a worthy investment to ensure you are nailing it in all seven of these key areas. If you do, you'll find you're not only attracting all the best applicants to apply, but you're able to secure acceptance from your preferred candidate as you've shown them an offering that cannot be matched anywhere else.

Resume Mistakes Can By Robin Ryan
Cost You The Job
Recently I was assisting an employer with the hiring process and reviewed many resumes that were sent in. I couldn’t help but be concerned that so many people are not having any job search success because they are using a very poor resume to represent themselves to potential employers. A poor resume drags out a search for new employment.
ACTION STEP: Results sell! Use specific facts noting demonstrated skills, and past accomplishments achieved. Our formula for success is using actions=results bullets that command attention. Be sure to include figures on how large, how many, what you did, and how it turned out. Stress actions that resulted in an increase in revenues, and any cost or time savings.
A candidate’s resume typically gets a 15-second glance, if it gets looked at all. Employers complain that they receive hundreds of resumes for any listed opening but 90% of the applicants are not qualified to do the advertised job.
Lengthy resume. Surveyed managers reported that resumes only
In recent hiring trends many resumes are never being seen by human eyes. An electronic computer scans it, looking at keywords and eliminating all others. Employers confess to getting so many resumes that the speed of applying is a hiring factor. Employers told me they look through the resume stack until they find four or five good ones, call those candidates in for an interview, and may leave hundreds of resumes unread. Today it is only a well-written resume advertising accomplishments and past performance results that gets noticed. Of course you know that, but when I look at the resumes being sent out to employers I cringe because so many avoidable mistakes are causing job hunters to be rejected. In my books Winning Resumes and Winning Cover Letters, we published a survey of over 600 hiring managers to learn exactly what gets attention and what gets rejected. A few of the major mistakes revealed included:
Lying. Employers reported they are on the lookout for the significant
get a 15 second review. “More is not better,” noted Martha, an HR Director. “Long careers often travel into numerous pages and important accomplishments get lost. We won’t read anything beyond a page especially with so many people applying.” ACTION STEP: Write a concise one-page resume noting top achievements. Highlight only the relevant recent information related to doing the targeted job. Use action words to create more powerful sentences.
Spelling mistakes and use of micro-type. A top complaint with every manager and HR person in our survey noted: “I stop reading when I find spelling mistakes.” Employers felt typographical errors reflect the poor quality of work they can expect from you. Reducing the font size to cram more into a resume often results in making it harder to read and many employers noted that they simply skip reading the ones with very small type. ACTION STEP: Proofread! Perfection is a necessity to remain competitive. Use size 12 font and a nice layout that is easily read. Use clean fonts (i.e. Arial) so phone numbers and emails contact information is easily read.
increase in lies or serious exaggerated claims made in people’s resumes. Common deceptions include accomplishments, salary, or size of the team managed. Helen, an HR Executive Recruiter inside a prominent company, wrote on her survey form: “Never, ever, lie. One person I hired lied about having a college degree when she did not have one. We fired her when the lie was uncovered.”
No cover letter. Employers report that fewer candidates today
ACTION STEP: Don’t Lie. Most employers catch you in the interview or when they do reference checks, so inflating your qualifications into fabrications is NOT the same as using good self marketing to get hired.
ACTION STEP: Take the time to create a targeted letter addressing the specific employers needs. Opening with a couple sentences that advertise your top skills and accomplishments is the secret ingredient to getting your letter read. Then highlight exactly how you can perform the job and show definitive actions and outcomes.
No apparent accomplishments. Employers report that many people’s resumes are just dull job descriptions but candidates do not list any kind of results achieved on the job. The surveyed employers heavily criticized generic resumes as a worthless effort.
use cover letters since many applicants are just blasting their resumes everywhere with a quick click on the send button. Surveyed employers stated cover letters are very influential and can snag an interview by themselves. They repeatedly noted was that it is a BIG MISTAKE using no cover letter at all.
A great resume is an essential career tool. It sends the an employer this key message, “I’m a pro in everything I do, and someone you definitely want on your team.”
