money hacks for a
HAPPy new year We all know it pays to sleep on a big money decision overnight. But what about smaller purchases that crop up throughout the month? Why not add them to your wish list and wait 30 days? That gives you a chance to work them into next month’s budget. And who knows? That can’t-live-without item you had your eye on just might be on sale by then. 3. Ignore Interest Rates when Paying Down Debt Want to put a big dent in your debt this year? You might be tempted to grab debt by the jugular, and attack the biggest interest rate first. But it takes more than math to win. According to Fidelity, the number one reason people stick to a money resolution is because they’re encouraged by their progress.
Courtesy of DaveRamsey.com Do you ever feel like you’re in a chronic cash crunch? That can put a real damper on your days, and take the hope and expectation out of a new year. But if money tops your list of New Year’s resolutions, you’re in luck! Research shows you’re on the road to success. According to Fidelity Investments, 56 percent of people who resolved to improve their finances last year did just that. Better yet, 83 percent said last year’s financial resolution is an ongoing event instead of a one-time goal. Who knew change could be so exciting? Put those resolutions into action — and get a leg up on your happy New Year — with these five money hacks. 1. Use Cold, Hard Cash Lots of folks choose plastic over cash for everyday purchases, and research shows that can lead you to spend more. Why? According to a Journal of Experimental Psychology study, parting with cash really is sweet sorrow. Plastic simply doesn’t tug at your emotional strings in quite the same way. So, put a little more pain back into your purchases. Use envelopes to divvy your dollars up across everyday budget categories. You might have one for groceries, restaurants, entertainment, clothing, and pocket money. On payday, fill your envelopes with the cash you budgeted for each category. When an envelope’s empty, the spending stops for that category until your next paycheck. It’s that simple! 2. Give Impulse Buys a 30-day Notice You went to the store for one thing, and somehow ended up with a cart full of stuff. Sound familiar? If so, join the crowd. A recent study found five in six Americans are impulse shoppers. 6 JANUARY 5, 2018
That’s where the debt snowball comes in. Here’s how it works: List your debts in order by outstanding balance, and attack the smallest one first. Once you knock it out, roll that cash over to your next debt, working your way up to the biggest of the bunch. You’ll build momentum — and motivation—as you watch your debts disappear and your cash grow! 4. Go Roth with Your 401(k) These days, most full-time workers have access to a 401(k) through their employer. This is a great way to save for retirement, because it enables you to make pre-tax contributions for your future. What you may not know is many employers offer a Roth 401(k) option, too. According to a Willis Towers Watson study, 54 percent of large and midsize companies do, yet only 10 percent of employees take advantage. That means lots of folks are missing out on tax-free growth. And now, any pretax match dollars your employer puts in can be converted to a Roth. That’s means even more opportunity for tax-free growth. Just keep in mind that you do have to pay taxes on any money you convert. An investing professional can show you how it works, so you can weigh your options and choose the strategy that’s right for you. 5. Take Advantage of Free Financial Education It’s no secret that money issues can cause big-time stress. According to the American Psychological Association, 72 percent of adults worry about money, and 32 percent say money woes stand between them and a healthy lifestyle. This stress can distract you on the job, too. It’s hard to get work done when you’re preoccupied with money problems. No wonder almost 90 percent of employers surveyed by Aon Hewitt had considered implementing a financial wellness program. If your company offers this benefit, don’t miss out. It’s a great way to EOE learn how to manage your money, and plan for the future. That’s something everyone can feel good about! —Used with permission from DaveRamsey.com

MORTGAGE RATIOS
NO COMMODITIES
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
Do you have a guideline ratio for mortgage debt to income?
Do you recommend having gold and silver as part of your investment portfolio?
Levon
Dear Levon, When it comes to buying a home, I always tell people to get a 15year, fixed rate mortgage, with monthly payments that are no more than 25 percent of their take home pay. This type of mortgage is the only debt I don’t beat up people for having. Still, I urge folks to pay off these loans in less than 15 years. The average person following my plan pays off this type of loan in about seven or eight years. That’s a pretty big deal in terms of your financial security. And paying extra on your mortgage doesn’t have to be a strain. You can start by simply rounding up your payments. If the payment is $770, make it $800 instead, and apply the extra to the principal balance. If you want to get more intense, you could make an extra house payment each quarter, or go the route of bi-weekly payments. To do this, simply make half a monthly payment every two weeks. By the end of the year you’ll have made 13 payments instead of 12. This will knock years off the length of your loan. Remember, your income is your largest wealth building tool. It’s so much easier to save, invest, and give when all your money isn’t flying out the door to make payments!
Don
Dear Don, No, I do not. I also don’t recommend oil or corn futures. All of these are examples of commodities, and the commodities market is extremely volatile. In addition to the market being wildly volatile, the prices on commodities isn’t based on actual production. It’s based largely on a supply and demand curve. If there’s a shortage on one of them, the price shoots up. For example, when you’re talking about gold and silver, there’s more demand than supply when the economy is bad. In this kind of scenario, people are fearful and lots of them run to buy gold. This drives up the price to unrealistically high levels. Again, the price on a commodity isn’t based on anything other than fear or greed, and a supply and demand curve. The prices aren’t based on an actual production of income, like it is with stocks or real estate. I don’t buy commodities at all, especially gold and silver. I don’t recommend you buy them, either. -Dave

Ways to Cope With Worklife Transition Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Michelle_Perkins/2435700
By Michelle Perkins
Job or business transitions can be stressfulwhether they’re due to layoff, returning to work after an absence, starting a new job, or working extra hours because other workers were laid off. Business owners may experience team turnover, the loss of a major client, or revenue fluctuations that create cash flow havoc. There are many types of transitions, and anything that is changing your current situation qualifies. Whether positive or negative, every transition teaches us valuable lessons if we are curious and interested in learning. If you’re facing a transition, pay attention to the emotional aspects, as well as the actual changes occurring and the financial implications, and consider the following. 46 JANUARY 5, 2018
1. Take an honest look at yourself. What are your strengths, weaknesses, skills? How did those influence-positively or negativelythe transition you are experiencing? How have you managed the transition emotionally? Did you know that circumstances were changing for a while and yet did not take action? Where can you find resources to weather a work upset?
2. Increase your self-care. Major changes are physically and emotionally taxing. You may feel less inclined to take care of yourself than you would when you feel great. The need to maintain optimal well-being increases with transition, and with diminishing enthusiasm it will feel forced sometimes, but that’s okay. You need self-care now more than ever.
I often hear that people expected a change was coming in their work. They often contemplated a move long before their actual transition began. Their intuition was likely speaking to them and they either weren’t tuned in, or did not choose or know how to address the message.
Even if you are frantic about moving on or otherwise solving the situation you are in, carve out the time daily (preferably an hour) to engage in the activities that are fun, calming and improve physical and mental health.
Understanding the emotions you feel in transitional times will help you to deal with those feelings so they don’t cause you to react improperly. Just like the nervous feelings you may have before a presentation, getting used to the butterflies (knowing you won’t die) allows you to stay the course and not overreact in those moments. Or, maybe you should react, but it’s imperative to be able to assess the options with a clear head before doing so.
3. Engage your curiosity. What went wrong, or right? What could you have done better? What did you do really well? Where could this lead? Now that is a great question! Sleep on that and see what ideas show up. Engaging curiosity does not mean opening the floodgates for the nasty, inner voice to enter with predictions of homelessness and devastation. Curiosity differs from judgement in its objectivity. Beating yourself up is not curiosity, it’s cruelty. You wouldn’t speak VOL. in 23that ISSUE 1122 and being kind to to a friend manner,
yourself is fundamental to the self-care you are advised to practice. 4. Focus more on what you want, and less on what you don’t want. This is a profoundly simple concept and yet can be very difficult to implement. Focusing on what you want is similar to “setting intention” and this is one of my top five coaching tips, if not number one. Keep your mind’s eye on the prize-always. And when it veers off, bring it back to focus. You must know what you want and that might take some effort to figure out. You may need to make difficult decisions that require time. If you must start with somewhat vague intentions or images of what you desire and work your way to more specificity, do that. It is not about knowing how you will achieve what you want (that can be determined later so don’t let “the how” question trip you up). 5. Know where your thoughts go. The process of noticing where your thoughts go, and then reigning them in and deciding where you will take subsequent thoughts, is control and magic wrapped up together. This is the clean fuel that will efficiently and effectively take you where you want to go.
Although this might be the most important point so far, it’s easier to implement once you have worked on points one through four. Sandra Yancey (CEO and founder of Ewomen Network) says “Success isn’t for the chosen few, it’s for those who choose it.” Your thoughts reflect your choices back to you. Redirect them when necessary. 6. Enlist support. Since your transition affects your family as well, it is better to seek the outside support of friends or professionals. I included friends, but you will want to assess the friends carefully when looking to them for support. How do they react to transition? Is their approach something you admire? Overall, it’s the outsiders (chosen wisely) who will help you to create positive transformation out of transition. Those in your family are thrown into transition along with you, and their own fears and perceptions of the situation can inadvertently create obstacles and negativity. They VOL. 23 ISSUE 1122open too, may need support. Maintaining
communication is critical during times of transition, but solutions may best be found outside the home, where others can offer unique and objective perspectives. 7. Open your mind. Support works best for those with a receptive mind. One that is willing to listen, absorb new ideas and to contemplate fresh outlooks before jumping to the phrase, “I can’t because... “ Especially when under intense stress, your body and brain react in ways that limit expansive thinking. The survival responses take over and it is more difficult to see beyond the immediate problem. Certainly, seeing a serious dilemma as a potential opportunity doesn’t happen in a closed mind. Engage the body physically (even 20 jumping jacks) to help your mind reset. Give yourself some time to see your situation in a new way. Many solutions exist for every difficulty. 8. Create your own rite of passage. Ceremony and ritual help with all transitions. If you feel yourself floundering, create structure. Manage your time with creative blocks of priority items. Create a gratitude ritual (I know it has been said so often, but it is because it’s important and it really helps). Find your spiritual side and create a daily ritual to connect with something greater.
Celebrate every small success or victory that you can find. Dwell on it for a minute (or more), take it in, write it down. Reflect on it before moving on to the next issue at hand. Remind yourself of what you are capable of by acknowledging the positive thoughts or actions you take that can improve your transition. 9. Let go of how things were “supposed to be” and accept “how things are.” Find appreciation for what is. Check out the works of Byron Katie for more on this subject. I have both said the words and heard many others say, “at this point, I should be... “
At this age, I should be financially secure. After this many years in business, I should be earning X, or working less. There are so many shoulds in life. And who in the world made these ideas so prevalent? The shoulds are ridiculous and based on the idea that everyone’s life follows similar paths and encounters the same everything. It is a false narrative. Go for what you want and need and eliminate the comparisons. 10. Forgive. No matter who or what may have lent a hand in your current transition, holding others as responsible can only go on so long. It just becomes an obstacle, regardless of it’s validity. When someone else is responsible for your situation, you are not. You have lost control. Take back responsibility for your life by forgiving anyone you need to forgive. You can release the negativity brought on by their actions. Without condoning what they have done, you can release their hold on you, and move forward. This list will help you to best cope with transition, however, if it is a lot to tackle, find the areas that you most need to address and start there. The last thing one needs when going through changes is to be further overwhelmed by self help. Breathe, choose one thing, focus and celebrate when you do what you said you would do and you begin to see positive results. Q: I have been feeling sick ever since the holiday party for my offi ce. I know that the person who sat next to me was sick the night of the party, but she came anyway. I saw in your column that you said that people shouldn’t go to holiday parties if they were sick. I wonder if I could just cut out your column and leave it on her desk so that she doesn’t do that again next year! -Houston, Texas Reader
A: No. It is irritating when someone is thoughtless,
but being passive aggressive toward her isn’t the right thing to do. The only thing you would accomplish by calling out her behavior is making her angry. That won’t make you happier, and it will make the entire offi ce uncomfortable.
Q: I have been working at this international energy
company for 4 years now, and I love my job. I joined the company right after college, and they’ve even helped pay for me to get my master’s degree. In June, they hired another recent grad who is 23 years old, very intelligent, and a great worker, but I know that she isn’t making a good impression on her management team. The problem isn’t her work ethic or abilities; it’s the way she dresses for work, and even for client meetings. I don’t think JANUARY 5, 2018

she is trying to be disrespectful; I think she doesn’t have enough money yet for a new wardrobe. She worked her way through university, but she still has a lot of debt from student loans. She wears jeans with holes (and not the kind that already have holes when you buy them. LOL) almost every day, and her shirts are worn looking. She and I are the same size, and I have several pairs of nice slacks as well as nice tops that would look great on her, but I don’t know how she would feel about wearing hand-me-downs. Some of these clothes are actually ones that my mother gave me when she recently lost weight! Also there are so many sales right now that I could actually go buy her a couple of tops, but I wouldn’t tell her that I bought them specifi cally for her. How should I handle this? I don’t want to tell her what to do, but I do want her to stay here. - Pearland, Texas Reader
A: Well, you win the prize for nicest co-worker ever. I am impressed that you have worked out a solution for a delicate problem. I agree with you that she needs to dress more business casual in her position because companies like yours tend to be a little more judgmental about employees who don’t fi t into the mold. I know that client meetings defi nitely demand a polished appearance. Your
issue is allowing your friend to keep her dignity while offering her a lifeline. Take her to lunch to discuss this, tell her that you think she is a real asset to the department and to the company. You can give her examples of client meetings you’ve attended and even include some funny details if possible. When you’re sure that you are both feeling comfortable, tell her that you think you two are the same size so that you can confi rm that information. Then tell her that your mother lost a lot of weight and gave you a bunch of her clothes, but it’s so many that you need to share the wealth. Ask her if she would be insulted if you brought her some of those business casual clothes to wear for work. I’ll bet she takes you up on it in a hurry, and she won’t even notice that some of the clothes look brand new. You are such a bighearted person, and you may be able to save her job. Thanks for being you. If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days. Have a question for Diana?

Common interview questions Prepare for your job interview by practicing your answers to these common questions.
This is often used to break the ice. This is different than just sharing about your personality. Your answer should be brief, and relate to your qualities that would help in the job.
Why are you interested in working for this company? How do you think you will fit here? Talk about positive things you know about the company and how they fit with your goals. This shows you cared enough about the interview to prepare for it.
How do others describe you? You can prepare for this in advance by asking friends and people you have worked with how they would describe you. The employer wants to understand how you would fit with their team.
What are your strengths? Use this question to show how your qualities could be used on the job and could benefit the company. List out your strengths ahead of time and think about what’s needed on the job.
Give an example of how you solved a problem in the past. The employer wants to know the process you go through when problems crop up. State the problem and describe the steps that you followed to reach the solution.
VOL. 23 ISSUE 1122
Give an example of a time you were part of a team project. Your answer could be from work, or other areas, such as community projects, school, family, sports, or theater. They want to understand how you operate with co-workers and if you communicate well.
What is your major weakness? Answer this positively by showing how you handle, or overcome a weakness. For example, “I was very sensitive to criticism. But from coaches, and my previous manager, I’ve become more comfortable with feedback, and I know I’ve improved my performance.”
Tell me about your education. Highlight classes you especially liked, and training, degrees or certifications you’ve earned.
Where do you see yourself in three years? Talk about the skills and knowledge you hope to gain to make a contribution to the organization.
Give an example where you showed leadership and initiative. Talk about a situation from a past job, volunteer work, or personal experience in school or other activities when you thought about the needs of others and helped out or led. Initiative is about taking action that wasn’t required or expected, like volunteering or reaching out to others, or taking on a challenge.
