Delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers pick up, transport, and drop off packages and small shipments within a local region or urban area. They drive trucks with a gross vehicle weight (GVW)—the combined weight of the vehicle, passengers, and cargo—of 26,000 pounds or less. Most of the time, delivery truck drivers transport merchandise from a distribution center to businesses and households. DUTIES Delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers typically do the following: Load and unload their cargo •

Some driver/sales workers use their own vehicles to deliver goods to customers, such as takeout food, and accept payment for those goods. Freelance or independent driver/sales workers may use smartphone apps to find specific delivery jobs. HOW TO BECOME A DELIVERY TRUCK DRIVER OR DRIVER/SALES WORKER Delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers typically enter their occupations with a high school diploma or equivalent. However, some opportunities exist for those without a high school diploma. Workers undergo 1 month or less of on-the-job training. They must have a driver’s license from the state in which they work and possess a clean driving record. TRAINING Companies train new delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers on the job. This may include training from a driver-mentor who rides along with a new employee to ensure that a new driver is able to operate a truck safely on crowded streets.

Most drivers generally receive instructions to go to a delivery location at a particular time, and it is up to them to determine the best route. Other drivers have a regular daily or weekly delivery schedule. All drivers must have a thorough understanding of an area’s street grid and know which roads allow trucks and which do not.

Driver/sales workers are delivery drivers who have additional sales responsibilities. They recommend new products to businesses and solicit new customers. These drivers may have a regular delivery route and be responsible for adding new clients located along their route. Some drivers make deliveries from a retail location to customers.

Q: I am always irritated by all of the things I see people do at work that are so not work-related. One guy goes around talking about his in-laws – who are rich. There is a woman who is selling makeup and wants us to go to a “party” at her house. Another guy invited us all to his barbecue. Then there is the woman who always brings her kids’ fund raisers so that we can spend money. How can I tell all of them that I come here to work, and they should do the same thing? - Houston, Texas Reader

A: I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Here’s the thing: your coworkers are human. They bring their activities to work because they think others will share their interests and because they value their peers’ opinions. If you are not the supervisor in charge of making sure that everyone puts her/his nose to the grindstone, you are not responsible for their decisions. It sounds to me like your company has a warm culture that welcomes personal input. It may be that you are the one who doesn’t fit that culture. I personally love the fund raisers and have some cool things I’ve purchased from co-workers’ kids. Lighten up a little. Q: I am looking for a different job because the late evening hours I am working now don’t go with being a new mom! I love the people here, and I especially love my manager. I want to give a heads-up that I will be leaving, but I worry that I may get fi red if I tell her. What should I do?

My wife and I want to begin teaching our son how make a budget and live on one. He’s 16, and he has a part-time job and a hand-me-down car. Is this a realistic idea?

I work long hours, and I make pretty good money. The problem is the money from my paychecks always seems to disappear before the end of the month. I know part of the problem is grabbing quick meals between extra shifts, and eating out a lot after work, because I’m usually too tired to cook when I get home. How can someone who has very little free time start gaining control of their finances?

Mike Dear Mike, Your son is at a great point in life to learn how to make money behave. Even in his situation, when he’s still living at home, there are plenty of things he can include in a budget. There’s gas for his car, along with maintenance and insurance. He’ll need to save a little money — maybe even for college — and I’m sure he’ll want some spending cash, too. Sit down, and teach him how to make a written budget by figuring out the upcoming month’s income and expenses ahead of time. Also, make sure he knows how to properly balance and reconcile his bank account. It’s still your responsibility to provide him with the basic necessities at this point. But I love your willingness to teach your son how to handle money intelligently. The sooner he learns some basic money management principles, the sooner he’ll be able to handle his finances responsibly in the real world! —Dave

Sheila Dear Sheila, No matter how little free time you think you have, or how tired you are, you must make time do a written budget every month. This is essential. Making a budget for the month ahead isn’t a lot of hard work, and it really doesn’t take long. When you give every dollar a name before the month begins, you’re taking control of your money instead of allowing a lack of it to control you. Start with the income you know is predictable. If that isn’t possible, look back over the last few months and find the minimum amount you brought home during a month over that period of time. This will be the basis for your budget. Once you’ve established a baseline income, you can write down and prioritize bills and other expenses. Just remember, restaurants are not a priority! When you make a prioritized spending plan, and start telling your money what to do ahead of time, you’ll have the ability to do what’s important with what you’ve earned! —Dave
