Qualifications/Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for sandblasting and servicing rail cars, tank trailers and other containers and vessels(primarily internal). This involves being able to abrade surface of metals or hard compostition objects to remove adhering scale, paint, grease, tar, rust, dirt, etc. to impart finish using abrasive-blasting equipment. Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper. Masks specified areas or objects to protect form abrading action. Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle.

MAINTENANCE ELECTRONIC TECHNICIAN Provides assistance in the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical systems and controls.

3 Ways to Get Rid of

Stress

at

Work...

Instantly!

Stress, if you let it, will ruin your day. When you get stressed out at work, your thinking gets fuzzy and your productivity drops. Even worse, you can damage your reputation or even lose your job. The adrenaline rush of stress can make you do or say things impulsively that you will regret later, when it may be too late. The good news is that you can stop stress in its tracks before it snowballs out of control. Here are three fast, free, and easy ways to de-stress: 1. Calm yourself with an ancient breathing technique. The 4-7-8 breath, popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil, can have an amazing calming effect on your body, mind, and emotions. It’s easy to do. Simply breathe in through your nose, while counting mentally to four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Then purse your lips and exhale with a “whooshing” sound for a count of eight. Repeat the whole cycle up to three more times.

2. Squeeze the tension out of your muscles. The mind and body are closely connected. When you are mentally stressed, your muscles tense up. If you can relax your muscles, your mental stress will dissolve. This technique uses tension to reduce tension. Start by tensing your hands, shoulders, and arms as tight as you can. Hold for five seconds, then let go of the tension all at once. Repeat. Then do the same thing with your feet, legs, butt, stomach, and lower back. Next tighten and release your chest and upper back. Finally, tighten your neck and scrunch up all the little muscles in your face, squeezing your eyes shut and tensing your lips, tongue, cheeks, and forehead, and then let it all go. You will have to make funny faces to do this exercise, so if you need some privacy, head for a bathroom stall.

3. Take a mental vacation. Images in your mind have a powerful effect on the chemicals coursing through your body. You can harness this power to flush stress out of your system. Think of someplace where you have been relaxed, where you have felt most like yourself. It could be a beach, a mountain cabin, a hammock swaying gently in the breeze in the backyard, or even an imaginary place. Then close your eyes and picture the place as vividly as you can. The trick that makes this technique the most effective is to use all of your senses. In addition to conjuring up an image of what the scene looks like, also imagine how it smells, what sounds you hear, what you can taste (for example, the salty air at a beach), and what you feel (the wind blowing through your hair, the sand underneath your feet). Experiment with these techniques. See which work best for you. Adapt them and make them your own. They are powerful weapons against stress that can protect your mental and physical health and can even save your job.

Electricians must go through extensive “on the job” training. In Texas, like in most states, anyone who works with electricity must first be licensed by the state. However, Texas’s laws allow you some freedom to work anywhere in the state once you are licensed. There are several different types of electrical licenses you can receive in Texas, including apprentice electrician, apprentice sign electrician, residential appliance installer, residential wireman, maintenance electrician, journeyman lineman, journeyman electrician, journeyman sign electrician, master electrician, master sign electrician, appliance installation contractor, sign contractor, and electrical contractor.

Become a Texas electrical apprentice (must be at least 16 years old),

or become a sign apprentice

(must be 18 years old).

Texas electrical apprentice licenses are just licenses to learn. In Texas, as in most states, you should earn your High school diploma or earn your GED before applying for these state issued electrical licenses. The state of Texas requires a criminal background check, supervised hours of “on the job” experience, and an apprentice must work under a master electrician, or master sign electrician to qualify for the state apprentice license.

Apply to be an electrical apprentice or an electrical sign apprentice through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Pay $20, fill out the forms, including your criminal history, and submit proof of work under a licensed master electrician, or master sign electrician every year of your apprenticeship. Late fees will be required if you are late in submitting your license renewal paperwork. Electrical sign apprentices usually work under a master sign electrician, but may be supervised by a master electrician also. They are taught to work with electrical signs and billboards exclusively. A general electrical apprentice must work under a licensed master electrician, and may be taught to work in any/all electrical fields, depending upon the type of work of the master electrician, and/or the contractor. It is best to choose an apprenticeship that also features classroom training.

Consider a State approved apprenticeship program (it is not required, and will not speed your career path)

These programs have educational requirements, and charge fees for the provided classroom training and books. While this is not necessary to become an electrician, it may be a preferable way to gain more knowledge about your chosen career. You could also apply for a vocational electrician program (but it is not required, and will not speed your career path). Programs that take nine months to two years are commonly available at community colleges and tech schools, for a fee. While this is not necessary to become an electrician, it may be a preferable way to gain more knowledge about your chosen career.

Work for at least Four - Five years as an electrical apprentice.

Apply to become the “next level” of electrician.

To be a residential wireman, you must have 4,000 hours (2 years) of supervised experience and pass the residential wireman examination. To be a journeyman lineman you must have 7000 supervised hours (3 1/2 years) of experience and pass the journeyman lineman examination. For the journeyman, and journeyman sign, or maintenance electrical licenses, you are required to have 8,000 supervised hours (4 years). You can apply to be a master electrician, or master sign electrician once you have achieved 12,000 hours (6 years) of supervised electrical work. You must also be a journeyVOL. 22 ISSUE 1080

man (or sign) electrician for at least 2 years. The fee for this License is $50.

Pass the appropriate electrician examination.

You can go to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to apply for these licenses and sign up to take your examination. The application fees are between $20 and $45, in addition to examination fees.

Renew your electrician license every year.

Unless you are a residential appliance installer, you will be required to obtain at least 4 hours of state approved continuing education credits annually in order to remain licensed.

Opt to become an electrical contractor.

If you want to start your own business, then you must apply to be a residential appliance installation contractor, sign contractor, or electrical contractor. In addition to being a residential appliance installer, master, or master sign electrician, you must also start a business that meets Texas’ licensing requirements. You will need to show proof of liability insurance for injury and property. This must total $600,000 in aggregate coverage and $300,000 of coverage per incident. You must also must show proof of worker’s compensation insurance and a surety bond.

A

fter 4 years in the Air Force, Brandon Johnson was seeking a new job. He found what he was looking for when one possibility—a career as a wind turbine service technician—blew him away.

Wind turbine service technicians, also called wind techs, repair and maintain the complicated machinery inside wind turbines. Repairs include everything from fixing circuit boards and motors to inspecting turbine blades to replacing generator components. Maintenance involves more routine tasks, such as replacing light bulbs inside the turbine. “There’s a lot of variety in the work I do,” says Brandon. “No day is the same as the one before.” As the lead technician on a wind farm— an area where a group of wind turbines produces electricity from wind power—Brandon consults an internal Web site to check the status of each of the farm’s turbines. He and the site supervisor assign jobs to the other wind techs, usually at a morning meeting. With roughly 1 technician for every 10 turbines, and each turbine containing many intricate pieces, there’s a lot of work to be done on the farm. The basic parts of a wind turbine are the tower, the blades, and the nacelle. The nacelle is a rectangular box resting atop the tower that houses the turbine’s gears, drive shaft, generator, and other mechanical and electrical components. Wind techs service the blades or nacelle by entering the turbine through the base of the tower and climbing a ladder or riding an elevator up through the tower shaft. When working outside of the nacelle—repairing the sensors that measure wind speed and direction, for example—wind techs are suspended hundreds of feet in the air. The risks of operating at high elevation mean that they must take precautions to stay safe on the job. Standard safety procedures include ensuring that turbines have been turned off before entering them, having at least two technicians work together, and requiring that they wear gear such as safety harnesses, hardhats, and safety goggles.

Other risks may arise from one job to another, so the morning meetings at Brandon’s worksite are also used for daily safety briefings. Technicians fill out job preparation sheets and receive warnings about potential hazards so they can plan additional precautions. For example, wind techs scheduled to work on high-voltage assignments wear special suits for added protection. MARCH 3, 2017

Safety isn’t the only concern for most of these workers, however. Nacelles are compact, and working in one requires wind techs to maneuver in cramped spaces. Technicians must also be available to work at all times to keep turbines running. Brandon admits that the hours can be difficult sometimes. “You’re like a doctor—a turbine doctor,” he says, “and when you’re on call, even if it’s midnight, you have to respond.” Wind turbine service technicians are employed by many different kinds of companies, including energy providers, manufacturers, and project developers. Brandon works for a turbine manufacturer that provides turbine technicians for a wind farm while the turbines are under warranty. He speaks regularly with company engineers to troubleshoot problems or to offer design feedback based on his observations in the field. Input from experts like Brandon helps the manufacturer improve its design and keep the turbines running smoothly. Regardless of who their employer is, most wind techs work at wind farms in the Midwest, Texas, or California. These farms are frequently in remote locations, but opportunities exist for wind techs to leave the site and travel. Some technicians are attached to a specific farm; others travel routinely from site to site, staying stationary only for brief periods. Brandon received his training as a wind tech through a program at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa. Because of the complexity of the electrical and mechanical systems inside turbines, prospective wind techs learn about electrical theory, motors, generators, and hydraulics. Brandon also received hands-on knowledge working on school-owned turbines and blades and touring manufacturing facilities. The wind industry is relatively new, so there are currently no standard certifications for wind turbine service technicians. Completing a training program, like the one Brandon attended, should improve jobseekers’ chances of getting hired but isn’t always required to find work in the occupation. Many companies seek new employees who have electrical experi-

ence, and they offer on-the-job training to instruct technicians in the particulars of wind turbines. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not yet collect data for wind turbine service technicians. According to anecdotal information, entry-level wind techs earn around $15 per hour. As they gain more experience, workers can take on more VOL. 22 ISSUE 1080

But experienced technicians earn significantly more: up to $50 an hour. According to the American Wind Energy Association, the amount of energy provided by wind turbines grew by 41 percent in 2015. As new turbines are constructed, new opportunities for turbine technicians should follow. With career opportunities come chances for personal advancement—including the occasion to interact with new people in a growing global market. “It’s a very diverse group,” says Brandon of the wind-energy workforce, “and we have a great opportunity to learn from each other. Everyone brings different strengths to the industry.”

I would never advise someone to write their own will, unless, of course, they’re an attorney in that state. Laws can vary from state to state, and some states may not look upon a document like that as being official under law. Some even require witnesses, and a notary might not be good enough.

If you’re trying to save money by doing it this way, I would strongly urge you to look at involving a lawyer as an investment. In most cases, having a reputable lawyer draw up a legally correct, state-specific will doesn’t cost a lot of money. At the very least, go online to USLegalForms. com. They have all kinds of state-specific legal forms, including wills. Your last will and testament is one of the most important legal documents you’ll ever be part of. Please don’t try to do this yourself, Joyce. I’ve run into so many families who, in the midst of grieving the loss of a loved one, were handed a handwritten piece of paper that wouldn’t hold up in court. That kind of thing just adds more stress to an already heartbreaking situation. — Dave

No, getting a secured credit card is not a good idea. Let me tell you a couple of things. Number one, your income is your most powerful wealth building tool. If you don’t have any payments, you have the ability to build wealth and be generous. When you have debt, all you do is send money out the door to make payments. So, being in debt is a guaranteed way to stay broke. Number two, you can get a home mortgage with no credit score through a manual underwriting. Just make sure you have a good, long history of paying other things, like your rent and utilities on time. You would also need to have all your debts paid off completely, and the accounts closed for at least six months. I want you to become debt-free before you buy a home, Maria. I also want you to save an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses and a down payment before you buy a home. Buying a house when you’re broke and in debt is a really bad idea.
