“Certainly! May I ask what dates and time you have available?” Try to be the first or last person on any given day. When you are sandwiched between others, the interviews often get hurried, with less time between interviews for their important notes about you! Making an excellent first impression, and effectively closing the interview often dictates who lands the job. Perhaps they thought you were the wrong candidate from the very beginning. Or maybe you bored the interviewer into NOT hiring you with verbose, lengthy and indirect answers. Never use more than 60 seconds on any answer! Robin recommends you use the “60 Second Sell”, which is a finely-tuned interview technique that effectively communicates to employers that you are the right person for the job. Most employers remember only a few things about any given candidate after the interview. Using the 60 Second Sell focuses the employers attention to remember your most important attributes. Analyze the job duties that the employer needs done, then select your top five selling points - the strongest abilities to do the job. Link these five points together in a few sentences that are said in one minute - this is your 60 Second Sell. Using this tool early in the job interview to answer the request “Tell me about yourself” will engage the employer’s interest without boring them with your life story or wasting precious minutes which will not effectively marketing your skills. Probing with the previously mentioned two questions may help you anticipate the ‘style’ of interview you are about to undertake. The most important styles to plan for include:

THE SCREENING INTERVIEW This interview is designed to narrow a pool of candidates and is usually conducted by Human Resources or a company recruiter. Often it is conducted on the telephone, catching you off-guard and unprepared. It is a good time to take control, tell the interviewer you are just finishing something and will call them back in ten minutes. Use this time to collect your resume and prepare, then make the call.

PANEL INTERVIEW The primary challenge in the panel interview is to determine who has the ultimate decision-making power. Be prepared for topics to change quickly and randomly, disrupting your flow. Try to determine the decision maker, typically that will be your boss. The best way to learn this is to simply ask when you are first introduced to the panel who the potential boss would be. That is the most important person to impress.

SITUATIONAL QUESTIONS INTERVIEW This is become a very common interview style where every candidate gets asked the same question requiring you to explain a specific situation, i.e. “ Tell me about a time you were criticized at your current job. “ These questions require thoughtful answers. No matter your role in a hotel or other hospitality environment, you will be asked questions about nearby places such as restaurants or entertainment. Some questions may include: Can you recommend a nearby restaurant? Whereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the nearest grocery store/drug store/shopping centre? Knowing the layout of your city or town can help you provide assistance to guests, and help your reputation as a residence of knowledgeable staff. Know your workplace! Even if your career lies in the kitchen, or the laundry room, knowing the basics of your lodging

facility can help to accommodate guests. Questions such as: When is checkout? When does breakfast start? Where is the ice machine/vending machine located? May be asked. When guests need extra towels, or special equipment during their stay, they will almost always contact the front desk. A front desk assistant is the individual who will interact the most with guests. In terms of interacting with guests, hospitality professionals should always smile and greet guests in a friendly manner. If asked a question, an answer should be provided, or the worker should direct the guest to an individual that can answer their query correctly. Other helpful skills involve maintaining a positive attitude, keeping a sense of humor, ending conversations on a positive note, making eye contact, and having proper telephone etiquette. Hospitality professionals should also know how to handle guest complaints. While, again, front desk assistants will hear the majority of complaints, other staff should be aware of the proper process. These steps include addressing the guest and giving them attention, understanding how you can solve the solution and proposing the possible solutions to the guest, taking action to resolve the issue, then checking up to see that the problem has been solved. A: I wouldn’t worry about a job that was 8 years ago. I’m sure that a prospective employer can get information from HR, and you don’t have to give your ex-boss as a reference. Usually, the only information that any HR department reveals is work dates, salary, and whether you could be rehired. They may or may not fl ag your rehire status. I might guess that the personnel in HR have changed since that time, and they would only know what they see in your fi le. I believe that your resignation email will be in your fi le. In addition, do not send your references until they are requested. When your references are requested, it’s a good sign that an offer may be given. Just put: References Available Upon Request. Be sure to inform your references that someone may be calling them. Include only business references because personal references are usually unnecessary. Leaving without notice and walking off the job are never good, but I wouldn’t feel the necessity of mentioning that. It was so long ago, and you have grown since then. (Right?) You need to explain the gap in your work history to any prospective employer. Just be truthful, and they will accept your reasoning. I would aim my resume to the medical fi eld, but it may be that you need to take a few courses at HCC or Lone Star to brush up your skills. Let me know how you do. A: I LOVE your resume and made extremely minor changes. I look at resumes every single day, and this is one of the most refreshing that I’ve seen. It’s personalized and personable. Be sure to include a cover letter each time that you send a resume. This allows you to send one that is personalized for that specifi c company. Keep a list of the companies to whom you’ve applied and make notes on each one. Nothing is more irritating to a recruiter than those candidates who can’t even remember that they contacted you. Looking for a job is a job, and a lack of diligence signals the recruiter that you are not the best fi t for their company. Saying, “I’ve applied to so many that I can’t remember” is evidence that you will have no attention to detail if you are hired. They found another place to live, and they both work, but since the foreclosure my dad has been asking me for money on a regular basis. He tries to make me feel guilty, and he calls or asks me to come over to talk about it when my mom isn’t home. He even asked for half of the bonus I received at work the other day. I know they need help, but I’m not sure what to do. Eli Dear Eli, I can tell you love your parents, because you’re looking for the best way to help them. I think your brain knows what to do, but your heart is having a hard time doing it. The first thing you’re going to have to accept is your father is being very manipulative right now. Put an end to these private meetings and phone calls once and for all. If he wants to talk, make sure he understands it will only happen with your mom in the room. Second, understand there’s nothing wrong with helping your folks get back on their feet. However, any financial help you give them should be temporary in nature, and it should be a gift. Don’t get involved in giving them money every month just because they raised you. That’s not how this works. When you permanently subsidize someone, you take away their dignity. You also change their status, and compromise their ability to stand on their own two feet. In return, you should let them know you expect them to work toward changing their financial behaviors with the help of a quality financial counselor — one with the heart of a teacher. It’s often difficult for parents to accept advice and suggestions from their own children, but it’s for their own good.
