the

OVERQUALIFIED candidate

S

ome job candidates have more skill, education, or experience than a position requires. These “overqualified” candidates often face particular challenges in finding a job. To succeed in the job market, overqualified candidates need to understand an employer’s concerns, highlight their experience, and communicate effectively.

But downplaying experience doesn’t mean disregarding it. In fact, Tina Garrett-Ragland, director of human resources for an automotive supply company in Roanoke, Virginia, suggests that overqualified candidates highlight their skills in the cover letter. “Downplaying your experience might get you an initial interview, but writing a good cover letter can produce better results,” she says. “Use the cover letter to explain why you want the job and how you will use your transferable skills to do the job well.”

EMPLOYER CONCERNS.

A forthright cover letter marks overqualified candidates as thoughtful and honest early in the process—and may help to eliminate a prospective employer’s doubts about their early departure.

An organization with high employee turnover can make future job candidates wary. Reluctance to hire overqualified candidates sometimes stems from these turnover fears: Employers believe that an overqualified worker will continue to seek a job more closely aligned with his or her credentials—and leave when one turns up. Cheri Butler, associate director of Career Services at the University of Texas at Arlington, says prospective employers have reservations about hiring overqualified candidates: “If I hire him, will he stay? Will he be unhappy with the wage we offer? Does she only want a paycheck? Why would she apply to a job that is below her skill and experience level?” As a result, employers may prefer the “just right” candidate, someone with the correct level of qualifications, who seems a safer choice.

HIGHLIGHTING EXPERIENCE.

Overqualified candidates mindful of this employer hesitation may worry about calling attention to their experience. Many choose to prepare a functional, rather than chronological, resume to emphasize their skills without underscoring years of work. Some experts advise overqualified candidates to downplay their experience on a resume to avoid rejection during the initial culling of applicants. This strategy is similar to choosing keywords from the job description to avoid automatic rejection.

34 MAY 19, 2017

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION.

Effective communication helps an overqualified candidate reassure prospective employers about concerns they may have. The overqualified candidate has motivations, intentions, and reasons for wanting a particular job, and it’s up to him or her to explain what those are. An overqualified candidate may have many incentives in mind—such as change of pace, relocation, less stress, and more stability—when pursuing some jobs. Overqualified candidates should emphasize how the organization benefits from their abundant skills. For example, an employer might value overqualified candidates because of their high level of expertise and experience, sometimes across various fields. “These candidates are attractive because they possess professional maturity and can fill many roles inside an organization,” says Garrett-Ragland. It is vital that overqualified candidates communicate to prospective employers their intention to stay long term, why they want the job, and how they plan to do the job well. Those who demonstrate motivation and an ability to pick up new skills are less likely to be known as overqualified candidates—and more likely to be called employees. VOL. 22 ISSUE 1091

THE ART OF

Business Etiquette: Strategies for Success

Although you may marvel at the charismatic closer in the movie role who uses shark-like tactics to persuade clients to invest in his products or ideas, in reality, the art of persuasion is a process that takes advanced social skills. Providing clients with solutions to their problems is highly preferable and ultimately more effective than “selling” them. By incorporating a professional manner in your approach to customers and peers, your may enjoy more success and experience less stress and disappointment.

By incorporating a professional manner in your approach to customers and peers, your may enjoy more success and experience less stress and disappointment

Good Manners Persevere in the Sales Force

Unfortunately, exhibiting good manners has recently become viewed as an antiquated model of ineffective behavior in sales. However, in 2002, a large international manufacturing firm launched an extensive study of “what people want from salespeople,” and findings where highly similar to expectations in the 1950s. Researchers noted that a high priority remained with honesty, product knowledge, empathy, good communication and customer advocacy. In addition, salespeople were judged by their attentiveness and willingness to listen to their clients’ needs.

Making an Investment is an Emotional Decision: Product Awareness

Although a client may fall in love with a sports car, he or she may need to rationalize the decision with actual facts. Sales people who have in-depth knowledge of the product can help guide the client towards their goal and discover the value that overcomes their objections. For example, demonstrating the safety features, explaining the return on investment and discussing research on low maintenance fees is exceedingly more powerful than “you will look good in this car.” Even the wealthiest people justify their purchase decisions with facts.

VOL. 22 ISSUE 1091

Listening Skills: The Power of the Uncomfortable Silence

Most people agree that talking over the client’s concerns and attempting to convince a customer “what you need” is far from effective. Whether you are in sales, healthcare or a loving relationship, active listening is a way to convey genuine concern for the other person. Listening to your customers problems and supplying the answer to their needs is crucial to success. Psychologists are trained to initiate a therapy session with an introductory pause. Clients are given the opportunity to collect their thoughts and express concerns without misdirection from the chosen subject of conversation by the therapist. It may take several moments for the client to comment on a topic, but the psychologist endures the silence until the client is ready to open the dialogue. Only then can the therapist truly understand how to help the client and engage in the conversation. Give your customers the time they need to articulate their requirements and collaborate on the solution.

Treat Your Co-Workers with Respect: Putting People at Ease

Your co-workers are the backbone of your reputation and credibility. By demonstrating a mode of good manners, you can easily stand out in the crowd and gain the respect at every level of your corporation. Refrain from sarcasm and gossip. Although you may seem amusing to colleagues at first with your biting wit, people will eventually avoid you. Rudeness is not strength or power; it is merely a shortcut to temporary attention that eventually boomerangs in your direction. Praise your peers with genuine sincerity and treat each individual with courtesy and respect. MAY 19, 2017

BUSINESS CAREERS WITH

HIGH PAY

A career in business is versatile. Some occupations, such as human resources managers, involve working with people; others, including logisticians, fo-

cus on products. No matter your interest, there’s likely a business angle to it that you could pursue. And depending on your career choice, you might be paid a lot, too. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show that wages for many business related occupations were higher than those for all workers. But workers in some of the higher paying occupations may also log more than the average number of hours on the job. As with most fields, business occupations may not pay a lot when you’re first starting out. Rather, wages typically increase as you gain experience. A number of other factors might affect wages, too, such as where you work (both geographic location and employer) and what your specific job tasks are.

JOB PROSPECTS

It’s important to consider more than your potential paycheck when choosing a career. Also think about whether a particular occupation is a good fit for your interests and skills. Once you have an idea of what will be a good fit, you’ll want to know whether you’ll be able to find employment in your career of choice. To help you gauge current and projected job prospects for the occupations highlighted in this article, the tables also show BLS data for the number of jobs in 2014 and projected job openings between 2014 and 2024. Occupations with many jobs and those projected to have many job openings might offer more opportunity.

BUSINESS OPERATIONS Workers in this occupation group help with the day-to-day activities of running a business, such as coordinating employee benefits or purchasing supplies.

46 MAY 19, 2017

FINANCIAL SPECIALIST

If you like keeping track of money, a financial specialist career might be a good option. Workers in the occupations shown in table 2 might do tasks such as balancing business accounts and helping people make investment decisions. Because of their expertise, many of these workers earn wages that are higher than those for all workers.

MANAGEMENT

Managers oversee an array of business-related activities. That’s why these workers typically need experience in a related occupation even at the entry level.

SALES

For many businesses, sales are at the core of profitability. Certain types of sales workers, but not all, have high pay. With some sales careers, workers are paid on commission. These payments reward workers who sell a lot with higher earnings. But the risks work the same way, with workers who don’t do well seeing their pay suffer—or even losing their job.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & TRAINING

Entry requirements for business occupations vary, but people in these careers often need good interpersonal, written and oral communication, and analytical skills. Traits that are important in many occupations, such as humility and patience, may also be valuable in business. And being hardworking and eager to help are good ways to prove yourself. In addition, aspiring business workers may need to meet the education, experience, or training requirements of these occupations to be hired for entry-level jobs.

EDUCATION

Business has been one of the most popular college majors for years, with rates of growth for degrees awarded in this field out-pacing those for VOL. 22 ISSUE 1091Continued on page 50

Q: My daughter is an engineer and has a really good job. She’s been at the company for a year and half and has received raises and traveled a lot . She want s to li ve in Colorado and has several f riends w ho have already moved to Denver. She will submit her resignat ion nex t week , and will continue looking for a job in Denver. Of course she needs to support herself, but she also needs to be sure that any job that she gets has good insurance. She has been on our insurance up to now, but she will age out in about 10 months. She has Type 1 Diabetes and is worried about having a pre-existing condition and her ability to get any kind of health coverage. Her medical costs are about $16,000 per year, and obviously that would be very dif ficult to cover without insurance. Many of the positions that she’s seen listed say that they will only accept Colorado residents. Do you know any recruiters or agencies in Colorado? How should she find out how quickly her insurance will start? How does she ask if they have insurance? - Ada, Oklahoma Reader

A:

It was great talking with you! If she moves to Denver to continue her search , she ne e ds to imme diatel y get Colorado ID and register to vote. That will establish her residency to any company’s satisfaction. Since she is an Elec trical Engineer and since her experience is really excellent , she would be a good f it for lots of companies in a variety of fields. She needs to find more local sources to check rather than utilizing only the national job boards. The local sources have more unique jobs, and they will be with companies that are actually hiring! She also needs to research recruiting firms that specialize in her f ield. These agencies are normally called “headhunters,” and they place people just like her! She is an ideal candidate for many positions because she doesn’t have so much experience that she would be dif f icult to train. If she uses a headhunter, she can ask them about insurance and when it would be in place. If she f inds something on her own, she needs to read the ad very thoroughly and go to the company website to research company cul ture and benef i t s . Do not share medical information during t he inter v iew. The recr ui ter is not allowed to ask questions about it and really doesn’t want the information! It could cause them problems if anyone that they rejected or MAYthought 19, 2017

hired someone because of medical informat ion. I know she’s going to do great!

Q:

I had a very good job before the oil turndown, and I’ve been having a hard time finding another one that is equivalent. I made $85K a year with great benefits and stock options, and I can’t really make it on less. How do I poli tel y ask abou t salar y and benefits before we get too far into the interview process? I have had several headhunters tell me that I need to wait until the end of the interviews. I have wasted a year looking, and I have to find something fast.

Meet with a Recruiter about one of these great opportunities!

A:

The headhunters know the range and they know about the benef it s. That ’s par t of their job. They want to be able to do the negotiating on your behalf to get you the most money possible. Since they are paid a percentage of your starting salary, they want to get you a good salar y. Ask them for those details. If, instead of a headhunter, you are working with a s t af f ing company, t hey al so w ill know the details. You may be pricing yourself out of the job that you want. Every company has a specific range of salary for each position. They should never hire anyone at the top number because that leaves them no way to give you pay increases. In addition, they don’t know if you will be a culture fit, handle the job with no difficulties and work well with all of the other employees. Surely you didn’t make the top salary when you started with your last company. If you were already an employee, would you like for a newbie to be hired for more money than you were making? Find out the range on these jobs, and consult with your recruiter about where they think you fit in the salary range. I f you have any ques tions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days. Have a question for Diana? Have you recently moved to Houston from another state, country or just another part of Texas? If you came here to get a job, I’d like to hear about your experience.

Continued from page 46 degrees awarded overall. From 1970–71 to 2013–14, for example, the number of business degrees awarded tripled at the bachelor’s degree level and increased sevenfold at the master’s degree level, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics. By comparison, the number of bachelor’s degrees doubled overall and master’s degrees tripled overall during the same period. You’ll need at least a bachelor’s degree to enter most of the high-paying occupations mentioned in this article. A few exceptions include real estate brokers; insurance sales agents; and claims adjusters, examiners, and investigators. In those occupations, you may qualify for entry-level jobs with a high school diploma. Choosing a major. In some occupations, it’s helpful for jobseekers have a bachelor’s degree in a specific subject or major; in other occupations, it’s required. Accountants, for example, usually need at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. And advertising managers may have an easier time finding a job if their degree is in advertising or journalism. In fact, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, business majors were projected to be the most sought-after graduates for the Class of 2016. Bachelor’s degree recipients who studied accounting, finance, and business administration and management were in greatest demand.

BROADENING YOUR EDUCATION.

You may not need a degree in business to have a business career. Some employers value the broad perspectives that people with other types of academic backgrounds bring. For example, American Community Survey data show that more than half of management, business, and financial operations workers majored in a subject other than business, such as social sciences or communications. No matter what your major, it’s important to study a range of nonbusiness subjects, such as English or history. Diversifying your education also may boost your pay. For example, occupations in which workers have knowledge of computer science and engineering often command some of the highest wages. Some occupations typically require education beyond a bachelor’s degree. These include statisticians, economists, and industrial-organizational psychologists, who usually need a master’s degree; and postsecondary business teachers, who usually need a doctoral degree. Workers still might benefit from earning a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or similar degree even if advanced education isn’t usually required in a particular business occupation. Getting this credential might improve your job prospects or help you to qualify for higher paying jobs.

when you start your career, understand that you may have to work several years to gain the experience you need for the job you want.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES.

Students interested in a business career can begin preparing as early as high school. For example, you can demonstrate leadership skills by getting involved in student government. Or you might pursue small entrepreneurship endeavors, such as starting a small lawn mowing business. Networking is essential. One way to start making professional contacts is to join clubs or student chapters of national business organizations, such as DECA or the Future Business Leaders of America. Another way to set yourself up for success is by doing one or more internships while in school. For some jobs, this might be the best way to get hired at the entry level because employers may prefer to extend offers to their interns upon graduation. In college, you may even be able to get academic credit for completing an internship related to your major.

WORK IN A RELATED OCCUPATION.

To qualify for entry-level positions in some occupations, especially management, you first must work a number of years in a related occupation. For example, computer and information systems managers usually need 5 or more years of experience in an information technology occupation that relates to the work they will manage.

TRAINING

After they’re hired, workers in some business-related occupations need on-the-job training to become fully qualified. Depending on the occupation, they may need a lot of training. For example, actuaries might work for years as trainees, learning from experienced workers while also taking a series of tests that will lead to certification. Training periods are somewhat shorter for other occupations, such as wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, but some training periods may last for up to a year. For example, sales representatives might participate in formal company training programs and then shadow experienced representatives to learn how the job is done. Although details vary by state, some occupations require a license specific to the work you do. For example, workers who sell financial products usually need licenses for the types of products they sell. Employers typically sponsor these workers and may allow time or provide training to prepare for the necessary exams. EXPERIENCE

Work experience is helpful or even required for getting an entry-level business job, depending on the occupation. You can begin building your résumé while you’re in school. But

YOU CAN’T FIX IT FOR HER

MORTGAGE FOR THE DEDUCTION?

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

I paid off my house a little over a year ago, and I’m completely debt-free. That’s a good thing, because I recently had some large medical bills and I don’t have quite as much cash as usual on hand. My younger sister recently received a tax bill from the IRS for $30,000. I love her to death, but she’s extremely irresponsible with money and in debt up to her eyeballs. I know how you feel about debt, and I’ve tried to teach her how to handle money, but considering her situation — should I take out a home equity loan of $30,000 to help her?

- Toni Dear Toni, Absolutely not! Does that mean you don’t love her and care about her? It does not. But you told me she won’t behave with money. You don’t give money to people who won’t behave with the stuff. That kind of behavior doesn’t help anyone, and it doesn’t fix the problem. It’s like giving a drunk a drink. “Help” would be aiding this lady in changing her ways when it comes to finances. If you just give her a fish, it will stink and go bad. You have to teach her to fish. That attitude is not about being mean to her, it’s just where she is in her life. She needs to be educated, not enabled. And it doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, either. It just means you can’t endorse negative behavior or participate in her denial. Keep trying to teach her, and pray for her. Make sure, too, that she’s in contact with the IRS about a payment plan. I know she’s your little sister, but you can’t fix this one for her. Sometimes the best help you can give someone is to help them change their behavior. That way, they will hopefully learn how to carry their own weight.

— Dave

My wife and I are looking at buying a new home. We’ve been really blessed with our finances, and we’re at a point where we can pay cash for a new house and still have plenty of money in the bank. Should we do this, or is it a better idea to get a mortgage for the tax deduction?

- Brian Dear Brian, I think the real question is this: Why wouldn’t you pay cash if you have the ability to do so? I would never advise someone to get, or keep, a mortgage just for the tax deduction, because these tax deductions are never 100 percent. Let’s pretend you had a $200,000 mortgage at five percent interest. That would be $10,000 a year in interest. If you take a $10,000 tax deduction and you’re in a 25 percent tax bracket, that would save you 25 percent of $10,000 on your tax bill — or $2,500. So, you would never send $10,000 to your mortgage company just to avoid sending $2,500 to the IRS. You don’t keep a mortgage just for the tax deduction. That’s trading a dollar for a quarter, and you don’t want to do that. Everybody thinks losing the tax deduction is an awful thing, but you could give $10,000 extra to your church — something you don’t have to be in debt to do — and get the same tax write-off. There are numerous positive aspects to staying out of debt. One big thing it does is change your risk level. It gives you a level of peace and security you’ll never have when debt is hanging over your head. All that money that was going out the door to the bank can be used to build wealth and give like never before!
