Military veterans have a lot of things to think about when transitioning out of the military, from arranging their finances and reconnecting with friends and families to how to structure the next part of their lives. Creating a checklist of things to do after the military can help a great deal. There are some important steps returning veterans can take to make the jump to civilian life less jarring. Veterans can start by creating a civilian resume before they leave the military. They can use the resources of the military and the services of their advisors to create a resume that highlights they military experience and showcases its relevance to the civilian workplace. It is not always easy for employers to see how military experience relates to the civilian workplace, but there are clear parallels between the two worlds.

You Can’t Just Cruise

He Set You Up

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave

I work for a small company that just won a cruise trip for all the employees. The prize covers just the cruise tickets, and we have to pay for everything else. The problem is that my wife and I currently have more than $50,000 in debt, not counting our home, and about $10,000 of that is in collections. We’re trying to fix our finances and start saving money, but we just don’t feel like we should take a trip right now. How do I tell my boss?

I’m a senior in high school, and I have a job after classes and on weekends. I made a down payment of $2,500 on a $ 7, 5 0 0 m o t o r c y c l e l a s t w e e k , b e c a u s e I a l w a y s w a n t e d t o have one before I got out in the real world and had bills and other responsibilities to think about. I asked my dad if that was a smart move, and he said I should ask you. So, what do you think? Should I go ahead with the purchase? Tad

Ricky

D e a r Ta d , D e a r R i c k y, First, let me say how proud I am of you and your wife. Most people would be really irresponsible in a position like this and simply borrow more money to take the trip. The fact that you’re behaving like mature adults tells me you’re on your way to getting out of debt and solving your financial problems. I ’ v e g o t t o w o n d e r, i s t h e r e a l o t o f p r e s s u r e f r o m y o u r company to go on this trip? I understand the benefits of team building and socializing with colleagues, but when you have no savings and are that deep in debt — and a chunk of that i n c l u d e s s o m e i n c o l l e c t i o n s — i t ’s n o l i e t o s a y y o u c a n’ t afford to go. A decent company will understand. Just sit down with your boss or owner, and explain why you can’t make it happen right now. You don’t have to unload all the details, but let them know that you can’t do something like this in good conscience when you’re trying to get your finances under control and already owe a lot of money. That’s one heck of a temptation you’re standing up to, Ricky. I love that you and your wife are on the same page and have made the decision to take control of your finances together! —Dave

NOIVEMBER 4, 2016

I’m glad you’re working and learning the value of money and having a job. But I think your dad set you up on this one. I’ve got a feeling he knew what I’d say, and he wanted you to hear it from me. I teach people how to stay out of debt and build wealth. And there’s always one thing I remind folks of when it comes to buying anything — if you can’t afford to pay cash for the whole thing, then you can’t afford it. The only thing I back off on is when it comes to buying a house. I love shiny things that go fast, and so do a lot of people who work here at my office. Right now, there are about six or seven motorcycles sitting in our parking lot, and they’re owned by folks who make good money. And the bikes sitting out there probably range in value from about $1,000 to $10,000. But you know what? Whoever rode in on the $1,000 bike had just as much fun as the one who owns the $10,000 bike. A motorcycle is a toy, and you should always pay cash for toys if you want to be wealthy one day. Having lots of payments and handing your paychecks over to the bank is not the way to build wealth. I would advise talking to the guy at the bike shop to see if you can rework this deal for a ride you can actually afford! —Dave

By: Paul Swann Having spent the last several years in the military, you have acquired a plethora of skills and a different vocabulary. Saying that you are the staff NCO for the O-4 who commands E-Div and that you just received a NAM for repairing the captain’s scuttlebutt will not make sense to most civilians. The better route to use would be to say that you work for the foreman of the electricians, and you received a personal commendation for repairing the captain’s water cooler. One of the biggest problems that you face as a veteran entering the civilian workforce is translating your military verbiage into understandable civilian terms. Learning to put military terms into words that civilian employers will understand gives you an extra edge to land that perfect gig. Demilitarizing your resume should be priority one when looking for a job in the civilian sector. With some creativity, any military work brings a ton of marketable skills to the job market. A Marine Corps sniper, for example, would have lead small teams into high pressure situations to carry out high priority objectives with little room for failure. The goal is to highlight the core values of the job, not the actual work itself. MARKETABLE CORE VALUES • Technical skills - The actual work performed, whether it consisted of electrical repairs or report writing. These should be included. • Interpersonal skills - In most cases, you had to work with supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates to get a job done in the military. The same is true in the civilian world. Be sure to highlight, within your resume, your ability to work with a variety of people in many positions. • Leadership - As you rose through the ranks in the military, you were expected to train and lead people below you. It is not unusual for an E-4 to supervise up to five people. In the civilian world, it takes years of experience before someone is allowed to do that same thing. The ability to supervise is a major boon to a resume. Translating your military experience to civilian terms not only helps to ensure your resume gets a chance, it also shows your creativity. The importance of this cannot be overstated. In most jobs, you will have to translate a company’s services and products to outside customers. Talk up your performance. If you made E-6 on the first try and only 15% of people in the same field make rank on the first try, put that on your resume. E-6 may not mean anything to a potential employer, but the relative success as compared to your peers is a valuable indication of future performance! After you have written up a draft of your resume, give it to a civilian to read. Let them tell you if you have removed the camouflage. Ultimately, the difference between a veteran job seeker and an employed veteran may come down to who translates and articuNOVEMBER 4, 2016 45 lates their skills best.

Q:

I recently lost my job in the oil industry, and I am interviewing a lot right now. I looked online and saw that companies can’t ask how old you are, but that happened to me last week. The way the lady asked was strange because we were talking a b o u t m y ex p e r i e n c e w h e n s h e suddenly said, “How old are you, anyway?” I am almost 60, but I have always looked younger than my age. In fact, she said she thought I was 40! I have to keep working because I support myself and my mother. I love to work and am bored all the time without a job. I don’t want to sue that company or anyone else; I just want to get a job. . I know what she did is illegal, but my question is what to say if it happens again. - Houston, Texas Reader

A:

You ’ r e r i g ht t h a t she s ho ul d never have asked you that. From what you said, it seems like her picture of you didn’t match with t h e a m o u n t o f ex p e r i e n c e y o u discussed. It’s very irritating when someone makes age an issue, but it’s definitely a problem. The good news is that the company bases hiring on you rather than your age. I think that you have just met the only person ignorant enough to ask, but if anyone else asks you that question, you have several options. The first is to just say, “I’m 58 and plan to work until I’m at least 70.” Alternatively, you could smile sweetly and say, “Oh, why do you ask?” You only need to be more informative if she persists. (That shouldn’t happen.) You can then say, “I look and feel 40. I have great health and love to work.” Resumes commonly hold clues to age. If you held several short-term, non-relevant jobs as a young high school or college grad, you can omit them. Don’t show the date of your college/high school graduation because it doesn’t matter. The only time an employer should learn your age is after you are hired and turn in your W-4 and I-9.

There sure is! I was a shy person around strangers, and it took major work to get over it. If the events are on a weekend, take your husband with you. Having support makes a huge difference. The big thing that helped me was realizing that no one else is paying attention to me. While you are worrying about your clothes and your hair and your smile, everyone else is worrying about the same things People really don’t pay much attention to us because they are too caught up in their own drama. Here’s what you do: Notice something good about each person you meet, then smile and comment. We all notice things but we fail to tell the person that we noticed. If you like a dress or suit or their hair or absolutely anything about their appearance, tell them that you do. It makes the other person feel more at ease, it makes them accept you as an equal, and it makes you feel good that you were nice to someone else. Eventually, you should start enjoying these events, and you may even find yourself viewed as very outgoing. Try it and let me know how it goes.

Q : My work friend is always chewing gum and smacking her lips. She doesn’t realize how annoyed this makes everyone else. Should I tell her? -Moore, Oklahoma Reader

A:

Of course. Say, “Betty Lou, I’ll bet you don’t realize that you are smacking your gum and making people crazy. Stop it.”

How the

n o i t c e l E

r u o Y g n i t c e f f A is

h c r a e S b Jo By Robin Ryan Life for a lot of job hunters and hiring recruiters is very quiet right now. Company after company has said to me that they are holding off hiring people until AFTER the election. Companies want to see which way the country, taxes and business interests are headed. This is especially true of large organizations who are holding off on promotions and new hiring until after Nov 8th.

USE LINKEDIN EFFECTIVELY – create a profile that employers will find. This means using the right keywords that describe your work accomplishments. Be sure you ask others to recommend you too. Check your connections for people to network with. Check LinkedIn articles and discussions to read up on current trends and problems in your field to learn what others are saying about them.

What’s a job hunter to do? Be patient. I expect there will be a rush of jobs listed right after the election. December usually slows down for hiring as we near the holidays but that may not be true this year.

MAKE YOUR RESUME SING

In the meantime, here’s how to improve your job search success:

CREATE A PROSPECT LIST of 20-25 companies you want

to work for.

NETWORK! 63% of all candidates are hired through contacts. Look to see who you know that can connect you to companies you are interested in working for.

– targeted resumes are most effective. Make sure yours advertises the results you’ve achieved in past jobs, specifically note if: you saved money; made the company money; made a process or system improvement; created something new, solved a big problem.

PRACTICE FOR AN INTERVIEW – Review the questions you are likely to get asked. Write out your answers. Ask a friend to help you role play and get feedback so you can improve. Be sure to rehearse how to deal with the tricky situation and salary questions. BE READY

– soon this election will be over and hiring will restart likely with a flood of openings (though we may not see it until January).
