You might consider renting your property if you are concerned about selling your home in time or if you think your relocation will be temporary. Talk to property management companies to explore services that oversee rental properties for absentee owners. If you need to start your new job right away, you may need to find a place to rent near your new employer. Look for rental agencies that

NOMINAL COSTS You might be surprised to learn that relocating may affect what you pay for insurance and health care costs. For example, if you’re moving to a more metropolitan area, you’ll likely pay more for home, renter’s or auto insurance. Consider the time and possible impact on your budget if you need to change banks, get a new driver’s license and license plates or pay home association fees in your new neighborhood. While these costs may seem nominal, they can add up. If your employer offers financial assistance, be sure to look at what costs are covered. In many cases, employers will reimburse any additional or increased costs you incur as a result of the move.

The Importance of Experience in the Construction Industry By: John Arthur Do you really need experience for a construction job? Several would say that experience is not really necessary, and many construction companies do hire workers with no experience for smaller jobs. But according to James Day, an experienced AECOM public health engineer, experience is vital, especially for construction and engineering students. “Start looking for work experience as early as you can, even in your first year,” Day advises students. Don t wait for your department s work placement tutors to feed opportunities to you.” And Day isn’t the only one who thinks experience is essential. Most graduate recruiters agree that construction-related experience really improves a graduate’s chances of landing job offers in the future. In the TARGET jobs recruiters board held last year, a majority of recruiters pointed out that generally, when it came to job offers, graduates who had industry work experience were better able to answer pertinent questions and tackle assessment exercises. The benefits of experience are not only limited to graduates, but extends to those who continue to expand their experience through the years. For the majority of those entering the construction industry, the most difficult part is finding opportunities to gain experience at the very start. Usually, recruiters won’t take graduates on an unpaid basis due to minimum wage legislation, and most other companies can t afford adding paid placement students over the people they have already hired. So what can construction students do to gain some early experience?
Here are some helpful tips:
GET SPONSORED.
Sponsorships or scholarships from construction companies will not only provide financial support to students but will guarantee work experience placements, particularly during the holidays.
APPLY FOR PAID WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEMES.
There are plenty available online for all kinds of construction-related positions from quantity surveyors to engineers to project managers.
WORK-SHADOW.
Knowing the predicament of construction students, recruiters have been very keen on giving students every possible opportunity to gain experience. One of these is work-shadowing opportunities. When students spend time observing professionals at work rather than taking on work themselves, they don’t go against any legislation and still gain insights regarding the work involved. To gain this opportunity, students must write well-researched and wellwritten cover letters and resumes asking for permission to work shadow a professional.
VOLUNTARY WORK.
It’s possible to do voluntary construction work during the gap year, but this may require a fee or some fundraising for certain charities.
TEMP WORK.
If possible, students should check whether they can get temp work in a related field. There’s no doubt that experience bears a lot of weight in the field of construction. Gain it early and develop it consistently and you can achieve much success in the industry.

What You Should Know About Hiring Millennials In The Construction Industry By Michael M DeSafey
In the construction industry, it will very often be necessary to hire within the generation known as millennials: the ones who grew up being told they could do anything, with social media always by their sides--they’re from a different world than other generations, and they bring an entirely new perspective and attitude to the workplace. To properly choose the employees that you know will succeed, and to further motivate them, here’s what you should know about hiring millennials:
THEY’RE INTRINSICALLY MOTIVATED.
This means that millennials care less about rewards than you may think: they want purpose, they want positive feedback, and they want to grow in their careers. This means you’ll need to be aware of your management; criticism should be constructive, and praise should be offered any time you see great work. For hiring, this means you should stress the opportunities for growth that are available, and if possible, offer a mentorship program. Flexibility in hours is difficult in construction, but if you can offer any, make sure it’s known in the hiring process, as millennials place importance on this, too.
THEY’RE IDEALISTIC. This means they may job hop until they find a situation that benefits them best for their goals. But it also means (and this is important) if they care about the job they have with you, they’ll want to make a difference in the workforce. You’ll want to show them how you’re contributing to the local area’s entire lifestyle--and as millennials can tend to be more in tune with technology, and less with labor, be sure to give them the time and flexibility to discover which role within your construction company may provide the best fit. You may even find that if you hire the right fit for your company, a truly motivated person, they’ll start finding ways to improve business you never thought of.
VOL. 21 ISSUE 1062
THEY CAN TEND TO BE INDIVIDUALISTIC.
(Meaning, not team players--which is not always great news for the construction industry.) How do you find the millennial you can mold and fit to the team? For one, hire for skills rather than personality. If the millennial you hire is suited more to your construction opening, then they’ll be more likely to want to stick around and to fit with the team. That being said, millennials are motivated by great work and great people. Surround them by an appropriate team and with good mentorship, and you’ll find a vast difference in their growth with you. Hiring millennials will become increasingly important for you in the construction industry, so it’s very valuable to understand this generation’s needs and motivations. With the right approach, millennials with your construction company could make a wonderful difference and help your organization succeed. I wish I knew how to answer t h e j e r k I t a l ke d w i t h t h e o t h e r d a y. I s e n t m y r e s u m e t o t h e company, and a guy called me to ask questions. I have been working part-time, and I always have to work weekends. I want a regular job where I can go to church and be with my family on the weekend. The ad said that this job was Monday through Friday, but I wanted to be sure. I asked him what the hours were, and he told me, but he said that information was in the ad I then asked if I would have to work on Saturday, and he said “no.” He asked me some more questions, and I think I did a really good job a n s w e r i n g t h e m . T h e n h e a s ke d if I had any questions. I told him I didn’t but I was really excited that the job was Monday through Friday. He then practically yelled at me and said that he didn’t think I would be a good fit for the job! He said that all I was interested in was the work schedule, and I didn’t even care what the job was. He said he was looking for someone with a good work ethic. I have a great work ethic! He had been a little grouchy during the interview, but I have no idea what I should have said when he attacked me. What would you have said? - Houston, Texas Reader
A:
Isn’t hindsight wonderful? We always think of the best comebacks when we hang up the phone. Here’s what I would have done: I would have believed the ad and not asked all the questions about the work schedule. You made it sound like you barely wanted to work at all, and that’s why he was grouchy! He wasted his time talking with you because the only thing you cared about was getting out of work. Next time you are ready to send a resume, research the company before you do. Really dive into the job description so that you can compare your experience with it. If there is a match, go for it. If you really don’t want to work on the weekend, you can ask once if it’s not in the ad. You’ll do so much better the next time.
• Must be 18 years of age
Q:
I never know whether I should shake hands in an interview or not. If I am interviewing with a man, do I hold out my hand first? Is the man supposed to let go first? Do I shake hands with another woman? Should she put out her hand first? It makes my hands sweaty even when I think about it! Help! - Texas Girl - Houston, Texas Reader

A:
First impressions are always important, but they are extremely i m p o r t a n t i n a n i n t e r v i e w. Yo u would be surprised to realize how many decisions are made in those first few minutes. I know you’ll be dressed appropriately, so let’s talk about handshakes. If your palms really do get sweaty, pop in the restroom before the interview and wa s h a nd dry yo ur h and s. S ome people even put a little powder on their hands. Be sure to wipe it off!! Greet the interviewer with a sincere smile and a firm handshake. I’ve had some people offer a limp hand as if they expect it to be kissed. Hint: it won’t. Grab the entire hand and press firmly then let go. If you can move around a desk or anything that is between you and the interviewer, do so. Usually the interviewer will reach out to shake hands first, but don’t wait forever to extend your hand. Practice shaking hands with friends before you go, and remember that it should be f i r m b u t n o t b o n e c r u s h i n g . We interviewed a guy who crushed our hands so hard that I had marks from my rings. I’m still not sure what he was trying to prove! This is such a tiny part of a good interview. Don’t let worry about this one detail get you so off-balance that you forget to be charming!!
If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 day s.

HERE ARE 5 STRATEGIES TO COPE
Jekyll, reflecting on mankind, “All human beings... are commingled out of good and evil.” You may be familiar with the Robert Louis Stevenson story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll believed that he found a method of separating the good and evil that he believed resides in all of us. The consequences of his experimentation did not bode well for him or the safety of others. The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has been used as an analogy for the balance many people try to maintain, between being a good person and doing “the right thing” at work, and acting in accordance with other self-interests. We have all likely worked with individuals who may not have always acted in the best interest of their employer and/or their customers, which can create an ethical and possibly moral conflict.

A duality can also be used to described individuals who are perceived as being moody, or someone who does not demonstrate a well-balanced sense of emotional intelligence. This is a person who seems to have an on/off switch that can be triggered or activated, with or without warning. Those individuals are challenging to work with and when it is your manager whose personality or demeanor seems to constantly change - that poses even greater challenges as that person is responsible for your work assignments, performance evaluation, and reputation with your employer. When you find you are in this situation, there are coping strategies you can implement to help how you respond to and work with this manager. THE ART OF MANAGING OTHERS While there are countless articles written about managing employees effectively, along with resources that describe leadership styles that bring out the best in employees, managing others is still individually based. For example, some managers can manage employees well while other managers
have developed leadership qualities. Some managers are actively engaged in the development of their employees and others manage from a distance - intervening only when there is a conflict that cannot be resolved. One aspect of managing others that has a significant influence on working relationships is a manager’s disposition. Some managers rule with an “iron fist” while others may view their role as collaborating with employees. Some managers may seem like dictators and others may appear to be aloof and not very responsive to the needs of their employees. It is this disposition that can appear to fluctuate from time to time and if so, that is when employees may perceive they are working for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. DO PERSONALITIES MATTER? As a career coach, I’ve heard many clients state that they did not expect their manager to act in a certain manner after starting a new job - as if that manager intentionally changed their personality. Most people display their best personality when starting a new position, and that includes the employee and their manager. Even with the most engaging job interview, and use of behavioral based questions, it is not always possible to predict how someone else will behave in the long run. You may believe that you have a good feeling about a manager; however, you won’t know if that feeling is an accurate measurement until you have worked with that person. There is an expression that is often used when employees do not get along and it refers to a difference in personalities. A manager or an employee may state that about the other when it is difficult to get along with them and/or a working relationship has broken down. If the manager has made that statement it is often used as a warning sign and indicator that the employee is expected to change in some manner. No matter how hard employees work to ensure that relationships at work remain professional, after time on the job there is always going to be a personal aspect. Friendships are formed, cliques are established, and a distinction of who is liked or not liked becomes clear - and may be based entirely upon perceptual factors. This happens with every employee and every manager within an organization. FIVE COPING STRATEGIES When it seems that you are working for a manager who frequently changes personalities or their disposition, there are strategies you can consider as a means of coping with and working with that individual. #1. FIND A WAY TO RELATE When you are able to relate to someone else you are finding common ground with them and being relatable means that you are breaking down potential barriers that could block a productive working relationship. This is not a process that works instantaneously or happens overnight, rather it is a process that is done through series of positive interactions. VOL. 21 ISSUEa1062
WITH AN UNPREDICTABLE MANAGER When you look for ways to relate to your manager, try to find neutral topics that avoid emotional reactions. In other words, if your manager is challenging to work with you may want to avoid discussing politics with him or her. #2. LEARN TO TOLERATE YOUR MANAGER If you have a manager who exhibits extreme behavior, learning to tolerate them can be challenging. I am not stating that you have to accept their behavior or try to understand why they act in the manner that they do now. However, you can look at the bigger picture. What would it mean for your job, your career, your team or department, and your employer if you try to tolerate how your manager acts? Learning to tolerate a manager also means you do not go above them and try to report why you believe their behavior is inappropriate - unless you have a justifiable matter that would involve someone from a Human Resources department. How you perceive your manager may be different from the perception held by their superior. #3. CONDUCT A SELF-ANALYSIS Any time you are finding what you believe is inconsistent behavior from your manager, the first step is to look inward. While that may seem counter-intuitive, it is important because you need to evaluate your perception of this person - along with the actions you have taken or would like to take now. Here are some questions to ask: Have you done your best to develop and nurture a working relationship? Have you performed your very best regardless of how you perceive your manager? Is there anything more you can do or should do now to make the situation better? Finally, if you believe that this situation is unacceptable and cannot be changed, is it time to find a different department to work in or look for a new job? #4. WATCH FOR THE EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS OR WARNING SIGNS If you have a manager whose disposition can fluctuate from day to day, it will likely occur often enough that you begin to develop a sense of what the warning signs are or when the changes are going to take place. If so, you can learn to work around or work with those changes. If the personality changes occur suddenly and without warning, then your only alternative may be to avoid any actions that can be viewed as confrontational. You may never know why these changes occur and trying to get to the bottom of it can also be an exercise in futility. However, as you get to know your manager you should be able to identify those times and situations when you should avoid direct contact - unless you are specifically asked a question or instructed to do something for them. #5. ALWAYS MAINTAIN YOUR OWN EMOTIONAL CONTROL It could be easy to state that emotional intelligence on your part is the answer; however, a sudden change in your manager’s personality or disposition requires more than managing your emotions - it most likely means youVOL. need21toISSUE hold 1062 back any ac-

tions or responses. While you may feel frustrated, you must do your best not to let those frustrations show as it will only create greater tension between you and your manager. Keep in mind that your manager is in a position of authority and any actions on your part that can be viewed as being negative or hostile will only result in negative outcomes or consequences - whether or not you are justified in how you feel about your manager. Maintaining control applies to all of your actions and all of your communication, both verbal and written communication. CONSIDER YOUR MANAGER’S PERSPECTIVE You may view your manager’s personality and disposition strictly from the lens of how it applies to you and your working environment. However, you should also consider their perspective as well. A manager is not only responsible for their outcomes and productivity; they are also responsible for an entire team. Their role can be very demanding, especially if goals are not being met. This certainly does not justify any manager acting in a manner that is not emotionally balanced; however, as an employee you can learn to empathize with their role, try to understand what they expect of you, and work to improve how they perceive you and your work. How you respond to your manager can ultimately influence their disposition towards you, either in a positive or negative manner. If you work for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, there may be no immediate or easy answers but what you can learn to do is to learn to cope with the situation - to lessen your emotional reactions and help you still work to the best of your ability, for the overall benefit of your job and career. Coping strategies can also lessen the potential for experiencing stress and built up long-term frustration. What you never want to do is to aggravate someone who seems difficult to work with now. You may never fully understand or be able to explain why your manager acts the way that they do now but you have an ability to control your response to them at all times.

AVING TRICK S Y S NE
Courtesy of DaveRamsey.com We love Halloween. What other night can you dress like a hot dog, and eat all your favorite childhood sweets without having someone judge you? The problem is we may love it a little too much. According to a consumer spending survey, it’s projected that Americans will spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $6.9 billion — that’s “billion” with a “b” — on Halloween this year. That means the average American will spend about $74 on the holiday. If you’re tight on cash, that figure may sound scary. But the good news is it doesn’t have to be. You can buy as little as you like and still have a great time. Try these five simple tricks to stay on budget: 1. THE COSTUME GAMES Instead of buying a $40 Ninja Turtles costume for each of your three boys — or sewing some rough-looking versions from scratch — turn it into a family game. Think Project Runway meets Supermarket Sweep. Here’s how it works: Head to the consignment shop or thrift store with your brood and give each child an envelope with five or ten bucks inside. Split into teams to pick out a costume, or find materials to make a custom creation. When time’s up and purchases are made, head home and have the kids dig into their closets for the rest of their getups. Finally, hit the runway, and may the best designer win! 2. DIY DECORATIONS Your attic, basement and coat closets are already overflowing with Christmas wreaths and ski gear. Even if you could afford that giant, inflatable cat in a pumpkin, where in the heck would you to put it? Unless you’re reusing decorations from last year, there’s no need to go all out for Halloween. Instead, take a sunny afternoon trip to your local pumpkin patch, and let each child pick one small pumpkin. Spend the rest of the day walking around the farm or enjoying a hayride. Back at home, carve or paint your pumpkins and display them on the porch with a few homemade signs to welcome your trick-or-treaters. When Halloween’s over, there’s no need for storage!
3. CANDY PORTION CONTROL Just because you live in a neighborhood that gets carloads of kids every year, that doesn’t mean you have to buy carloads of candy. If you already know you’ll be visited by 50 – 100 princesses and superheroes, skip the gourmet chocolate bars and grab a bulk bag of assorted candy instead. And don’t feel like you have to get the brand-name stuff either. Just buy what you can afford, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. These kids are getting a lot of sugar, so you’re not depriving the latecomers. Early birds get the gummy worms! 4. FREE FALL ACTIVITIES There are heaps of harvest and Halloween festivals this time of year. And they’re usually free! So take advantage of what’s already going on in your church or community, and budget a little extra for any special games, crafts or kiddie rides. And since fair food can add up if you’re not careful, save some cash by packing a picnic and a cozy quilt before you go. Just be sure to budget for a funnel cake while you’re there — it’s a fall festival essential. 5. FAMILY TRADITIONS Carve out a weekend or two for some quality time together. You don’t necessarily have to paint pumpkins or dress up, but it can be fun to start a few new fall traditions. How about a harvest-themed cooking day? Try caramel apples, pumpkin pie and jack-o-lantern pizzas (use the pepperonis and veggies to make the face). Or have everyone vote for their favorite fall movies, then hunker down on the couch (or maybe under a fort) to snuggle and munch the day away. And if you’d rather be outside, head over to the park for a scavenger hunt and enjoy the scenery while you search. There’s no wrong way to celebrate Halloween. As long as your loved ones are together, laughing and soaking in the blessings of the season, you’ll have a blast — even on a bite-size budget! *To read more money related articles, visit http://www.daveramsey.com/blog.
