CONTRACT
are coming to you (like a car dealership) always approach them before they start browsing. After you’ve opened them up with a great smile and friendly introduction, begin to build rapport with them and common ground. This is utterly important as it will build the foundation for you to move onto the next part of the sale.
there. You are trying to flush out the objections instead. You want to know the reasons why they might not go ahead and buy right now. For example, you might ask: “Do you have any other questions before we sign the paperwork?” At this point, they will mention any lingering problems they see in doing a deal with you and you can address them.
3. Investigation
8. Proposal
So what kind of questions do you ask in a sale during the investigation stage? You ask relevant questions about your prospect such as what their main problem they are trying to solve is, what is most important to them in this type of product, and then you can communicate in a way that builds value throughout the rest of the sales steps.
9. Negotiations
The investigation stage, also called “fact finding”, is where most of your sales process will take place. That’s because the element that sets good salespeople from great sales professionals is impeccable question asking. In fact, you should be asking questions 80% of the time that you speak instead of making statements.
Sales Mastery:
The 12 Essential Steps of Every Sale
If you are in sales, you need to know the proper steps of a sale. Otherwise, you could miss out on valuable deals and referrals to grow your career and business. The following are the crucial steps that you should take every buyer through during a sale. Keep in mind that if you skip any of these steps, it could come back to bite you as the buyer isn’t ready to commit yet. So always guide your prospect along the path and don’t be afraid to go back a step or two to maintain the right path to the sale.
1. Mental State
The first and most important step to every sale is your attitude, your mindset, your mental state. After all, the first thing you are really selling is yourself. It is crucial that you have your mindset strong. Maintain a positive mental state at all times. Watch inspirational videos, exercise, review your big life goals, and do whatever else it takes to be excited and radiant. If your mental state is not strong, it will kill sales before they even get started and none of the other eleven steps below can save you. So stay positive and watch your prospects lighten up and close more often.
2. Greeting
The greeting is the next essential step to every sale you attempt. You should always greet your prospect with a smile, even if you’re on the phone (smiling actually loosens your vocal chords which is why you can “hear” a smile). Mention your name, ask for theirs, and ask them what you can help with. If you work in retail or environment where your customers SEPTEMBER 14, 2018 22another
4. Buyer Profile
Once you’ve done your investigating you are ready to build a buyer profile. This stage is essentially all about putting your prospect into a certain category. Are they a dominant personality or timid personality? Do they seem social or introverted? Be sure to analyze their behavior so you can match it and keep them comfortable with you.
5. Selection
The previous stage, buyer profiling, helps you with the right product selection. This stage is difficult but rewarding when you do it right. You want to make sure your customer is actually looking at the right product. If you sell cars and you’re showing a conservative family of four a two-seat Ferrari, you might be on the wrong product. But a six-seat family van might be perfect for them. Many times, you can waste time by being on the wrong product, so make sure you don’t rush this stage as it will only mean you have to revisit previous steps and rebuild momentum if your buyer realizes they don’t want what you’re offering.
6. Demonstration / Presentation
The demonstration / presentation is all about showing your buyers the product you are offering in action. If you’re selling kitchen knives, this is the perfect time to start chopping vegetables. To use the example of a dealership again, this is where you would go on a test drive. The key to a great product demo is to show the benefits of your offering in a dramatic fashion and in a way that specifically addresses the concerns voiced by your prospect earlier on in the sales process. If they mentioned that cost was a primary concern, then you could show a chart that proves how much you save your customers annually, and so on.
7. Trial Close
Trial closes are commonly misunderstood. They are not actually intended to close the deal right
Every deal needs a written proposal. Whether you are using a paper and pen or a digital technology like email to “ink” the deal, always get the agreement in a textual form. This allows all parties to carefully look over the details and make edits as needed. This sets you up for the next stage:
Contrary to popular belief, negotiations are not always about reducing the price. There are other parts of the arrangement that are important to your potential buyer and your goal during the negotiations is to help them achieve their desires without giving up too many things on your end. For example, perhaps they want to purchase your insurance plan and they want 24/7 customer service call access which usually costs them $100 a month. But it might only cost your insurance firm $10 a month, so it would be a minor concession for you and a major win for them to throw the bonus into the deal for them.
10. The Close
Once you’ve worked out the specifics during the negotiation stage of the sale, it’s time to ask for the close. You can do this in a variety of ways, and there are tons of closing “phrases” out there to help you. Most importantly is to realize that you need to ask directly for the sale here. Anything along the lines of “Let’s do this now, what do you think?” is acceptable. If they’re not ready, they’ll tell you and then you can address each objection or obstacle they throw at you, one by one.
11. Delivery
Think your job is done once you close the deal? Think again. Sales is process, and closing is just one step. You still need to deliver on your promises after you ink the deal, so be sure that you have the resources to commit to your customers all the way.
12. Followup
Followup is the final, and most overlooked, part of every sale. It is just as essential as every other piece but lazy salespeople neglect it. Followup can be boring, but it doesn’t need to be. You can followup with your customers in creative ways. For example, call them on their birthday just to touch base. Send them videos in emails of interesting things happening in your office. The point of followup is to stay in your client’s mind and maintain a strong relationship so that they buy from you again and refer you quality business. In sales, the process is what gives you power. Too many sales professionals actually don’t have a system that helps them visualize a sale. You can rise above the average crop and grow your sales and success by simply following every step in each sale23you attempt. VOL. ISSUE 1158

wearing jeans to an interview is disrespectful. You are signaling to the recruiter/interviewer that you just don’t give a care. Too casual or distracting clothing indicates that you aren’t professional enough to know how to dress appropriately. One expert says, “If you’re an adult and need to be told these things you’re probably not right for the job.” Q: I just took deferred adjudication for a drug charge, and I want to know how long it will take to get that on my record? My record is totally clean right now until that shows up. How can I fi nd out if this will eliminate me as a candidate for many jobs? -Houston, Texas Reader A: It’s just a computer stroke to enter it. I think it will be almost immediately, but It depends on how backed up with work the court system is. I would assume that companies will have access to that info right now. Remember that you might get hired without disclosing the glitch, but you could be fi red for that because it’s falsifi cation. If you are hired without disclosing your situation, it could come back and bite you. Remember that deferred adjudication lasts for about 2 years, and it will show on your records unless you use legal means to have it removed. Q: I know that you said to not wear jeans to an interview, but I have an interview in two days at a company where I have several friends. I know that they wear jeans to work almost every day, but I don’t know about the interview. In this case, are jeans okay? -Bellaire, Texas Reader A: Ask your friends if they wore jeans to interview there. I’ll bet they didn’t because it’s an interview. It seems old-fashioned to always have to worry about what you’re wearing to an interview when you’ll just wear jeans if you start working there. The problem is that

Q: I bought a cheap used car, and that was a mistake. Of course it lasted only about 3 months and now I’m walking everywhere I go. I know that I could use Lyft or Uber to get to work, but it just costs too much and it takes a lot more time in the afternoon. I thought about getting a bike, but it would have to be a used one, and it scares me to be on the highway on a bike. A couple people from the offi ce live near me, but I hate to ask them for rides. I am running out of ideas. -Sugar Land, Texas Reader A: Check the bus schedules and stops to see if that might work. If not, you need to make arrangements with one (or more) of the people in your offi ce. You won’t hate asking so much if you pay them for the ride. It wouldn’t cost as much as a ride sharing company charges, and you’d be able to save for a bike, an electric scooter, or a car. It may feel uncomfortable to ask for help, but you can lose your job if you can’t be there or can’t be on time. You also need to ask yourself what you would do if a colleague asked you for rides to work, and you were able to provide them. You’d be happy to do that, right? Most people want to help and will go out of their way to lend a hand. Good luck. -If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days. Have a question for Diana? Putting your
liberal arts degree to
Domingo Angeles and Brian Roberts
A college degree lets employers know that you’ve learned skills in a specific field. And with a degree in liberal arts, the skills you’ve honed include those that employers want in their workers. According to studies from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers often rank skills such as critical thinking and communication—hallmarks of liberal arts training—above technical aptitude as essential for career readiness. “Liberal arts study helps students develop strong foundational competencies,” says Paul Timmins, director of career services for the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. “It gives them tools to succeed beyond their first job.” Robert Vega, director of liberal arts career services at the University of Texas at Austin, agrees. “Regardless of the industry, we need people who can solve problems, write well, speak well, bring multiple perspectives to decision-making; we need people who are good managers, who are cross-culturally competent,” he says. “All of that is liberal arts.”
WHAT ARE THE “LIBERAL ARTS”? Definitions of liberal arts vary. Some limit the designation to literature and the arts. But others, including liberal arts colleges, expand the definition to encompass the social and natural sciences as well. In the broadest sense, a liberal arts education is an approach to learning that involves diverse coursework so students develop a range of knowledge. Generally speaking, it’s designed to prepare students for a variety of career options, rather than for a specific occupation.
work
studies, which provides an overview of many subjects instead of a single one. Whether majors are identified as liberal arts may vary by academic institution. For example, some universities house the mathematics department in the college of liberal arts and sciences; others may offer math through the college of engineering. Interest to career. Your personal interests may relate to career options in ways that aren’t immediately apparent. If you enjoy self-expression, for example, majoring in theater studies could help you develop the speaking ability and creativity that are important in public relations. Other interests relate more directly to occupations. If you like researching topics and writing papers, for example, you might decide to major in English with a goal of working as a writer.
EMPLOYMENT AND WAGES BY DEGREE FIELD Where do liberal arts graduates work? Younger workers often earn less than older workers, whose wages may increase as they gain experience and become established in careers. An interactive tool from an advisory group called the Hamilton Project shows how occupations and earnings in your major differ by sex and age.
Subject areas. Liberal arts majors are often organized by subject, such as social sciences.
Commercial art and graphic design. Students with this major learn how to apply artistic and computer techniques to communicate ideas through illustrations and other forms of media. There were 186,503 recipients of a bachelor’s degree in this field in 2015, with a median annual wage of about $40,940 for full-time workers under age 35.
Within the subjects, students may focus on a particular discipline, such as geography. But some schools offer a major in liberal arts or liberal
Communications. In this field, students focus on the comprehensive study of speech and rhetoric, including its social and political applications.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2018
There were 373,736 recipients of a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2015, and full-time workers under age 35 had a median annual wage of about $41,600. Economics. Students majoring in economics analyze the production, conservation, and allocation of resources. In 2015, there were 219,289 recipients of a bachelor’s degree in economics, and full-time workers under age 35 had a median annual wage of about $52,450. English language and literature. Students with this major focus on the structure and use of the English language, including dialects, literatures, and cultures of English-speaking peoples. There were 226,034 recipients of a bachelor’s degree in this field in 2015, and full-time workers under age 35 earned a median annual wage of about $38,710. Fine arts. To prepare students to function as creative visual artists, this field includes instruction in the theory and techniques of traditional and modern media. behavior of individuals and the physical and environmental bases of mental, emotional, and neurological activity. In 2015, there were 448,864 recipients of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and full-time workers under age 35 had a median annual wage of about $35,750. Sociology. In this field, students learn about human social institutions and social relationships. There were 163,025 recipients of a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2015, with full-time workers under age 35 earning a median wage of about $37,860 annually.
PREPARING FOR A CAREER As the data show, liberal arts graduates enter a range of career fields. And that’s because, some experts say, the skills they develop are applicable to nearly any job. But students who major in liberal arts may increase their career options by getting additional education—and by taking steps while still in school to prepare for the labor force.
such as sociologists and historians. When deciding whether to get a master’s degree, however, it may be helpful to look at data for master’s degree by field that show which workers enjoy a wage premium for continuing their education. Majoring in liberal arts also provides a foundation for study toward a professional degree, such as law. Many types of graduate programs—including those as specialized as business and medicine— are open to qualified applicants from any field of study, including liberal arts. Beyond the major. Liberal arts graduates may have jobseeking challenges that those in specialized fields, such as registered nurses, do not. But positioning yourself for employment is
Core skills. As a liberal arts student, you’ll typically take courses that involve research, analysis, and writing and that span several subject areas. In these courses, you develop both core skills and a range of knowledge that can serve you throughout your work life. “The basis of liberal arts education is a broad, multidisciplinary foundation,” says Vega. “Liberal arts majors are able to look at questions from many different perspectives and create unique approaches to answering them. We’re graduating thinkers who will solve problems of the future that we don’t even know are problems today.” Liberal arts courses that integrate technical instruction may help you gain technical competence. “The liberal arts curriculum is changing, and students in these disciplines are learning to use new technologies,” says Mark Peltz, a dean of career development at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. “Liberal arts students really are forward thinking, innovative, and creative in these fields.” And with its focus on wide applicability, a liberal arts degree can prepare you to use your skills in myriad ways. Such flexibility may bode well for an evolving job market. “The breadth and depth of a liberal arts education allows people to transfer their skills into new contexts,” says Lynn Pasquerella, president of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. “Where rapidly changing technology means rapid obsolescence, that adaptability is more important than ever.” More education. To expand your career options, you might want to consider taking business or technical courses to supplement your degree. Doing so may qualify you to enter occupations that have specific requirements, such as those in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.
important no matter what your major. “If you’re an accounting major and all you’ve done is go to class, you’re in trouble. If you’re a philosophy major and all you’ve done is go to class, you’re in trouble,” says Peltz. “You need to complement your academic work with multiple experiences outside the classroom.” A good way to gain workplace skills is through experiential learning. Some colleges and universities offer programs or encourage internships to help students get a glimpse of careers, gauge work preferences, and boost confidence. “You have to get out there and build those skills that may lead to a career,” says Timmins. “Sometimes, you may realize from an experience that it’s not what you want to do, and that’s fine. You’ve learned something really important.” With the right attitude and preparation, say experts, your liberal arts degree can take you in as many directions as your career goals allow. “When people ask, ‘What are you going to do with that liberal arts degree?’ the answer is: ‘Whatever I want,’” says Pasquerella. “It’s your capacity to see how the skills you acquired can be transferred that’s important.”
A bachelor’s degree typically isn’t enough for entry-level jobs in some liberal arts occupations,

Professional Tradesmen: Electricians, plumbers, welders, drywall installers, framers, masons, carpenters, auto mechanics, and more. We see them all around us, every single day. They are our nation’s REAL working hands. Whether grizzled veterans or young apprentices just learning the trade, these men and woman work in the toughest, most unforgiving conditions – often, with no break room in sight! The job gets done in mud and muck, unbelievable heat and rain, or under a kitchen sink. The job gets done with bare hands – rough hands with swollen joints, blisters as big as Texas, grease-stained finders, and calluses. These are working hands – REAL WORKING HANDS! Professional tradesmen are the backbone of our great nation. And to all of these men and women who use their hands to keep our country running strong, IRWIN Tools would simply like to say “THANKS.”

And, it’s our hope that the entire nation will celebrate with us. So here’s to the hands that build our country and keep it going strong. They might not be pretty, but they sure make us proud!

Do you want to know a few ways that you can say thanks? It’s really up to you, and the possibilities are truly endless. But if you’re not feeling all that creative, here are a few suggestions that might get the ideas flowing: • •
• • • •
• • • • • •
50•
Visit a jobsite, and simply say “thanks” (consider taking a box of donuts!) Don’t just think of large commercial or residential construction jobsites (although those are great too!). Remember to think about all the independent contractors who may work for themselves or for small businesses, such as plumbers, electricians, auto technicians, roofers, drywall installers, siding installers, refrigeration and HVAC technicians, maintenance and repair professionals, etc. Visit your local home improvement or hardware store, and say “thanks” to tradesmen as they make their material and tool purchases for the day’s jobs. Do you know a neighbor who’s having carpet or tile installed, having their kitchen remodeled, or having an electrician or plumber in their home to do some work? Stop by and tell that tradesman thanks. Do you have family or friends who are tradesmen? Tell them thanks! Stop by your neighborhood convenience store (preferably first thing in the morning). You’ll recognize tradesmen in many cases by the logo on the side of the truck or van they drive. Ask them what they do for a living. Tell them it’s National Tradesmen Day. Then tell them thanks, and offer to buy their morning coffee. Do you know a restaurant that’s frequented by tradesmen during lunch? Stop by and offer to buy them lunch. Do you have a favorite automotive mechanic? Don’t forget to thank him/her! Do you have a spouse or friend who works somewhere that might have tradesmen on staff? Visit them and say thanks. Do you have kids in school? If so, there’s certainly maintenance staff on site! Look for tradesmen at your local grocery store, hospital, etc. Do you live in an apartment that has a maintenance person? Don’t forget to thank him/her! Your idea here!

Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y

PLANNING AND SUCCESS Dear Dave, I’m stuck in a dead-end job, and I only have a high school diploma. I’ve never minded long hours and hard work, but I’ve begun to realize I need to have a better career, so I can spend more time with my kids. I feel like I’m missing out on their lives, because I work 65 to 70 hours every week. Do you have any advice on how to change my situation? Tim Dear Tim, Asking questions and exploring your options like this is a much smarter move than simply walking away from an unsatisfying job situation — especially when you have a family to think about. I’m glad you’re wise enough to take a thoughtful look at the situation, instead of making a rash decision that could have a negative impact on you and your family. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself in terms of education or your career. But before you do any of that, you’ve got to have a definite direction in mind. You need an in-depth, detailed game plan for the next three or four years that’s designed to put you where you want to be. It may involve going back to school for some classes, additional training in your field, or even getting a full-blown degree. If you identify your long-term goals in detail, it will lead you to some of the short-term goals that will help you arrive at your final destination. Have you tried talking to your boss about your goals and your situation? See if you can have a sincere conversation with him or her, and discuss your feelings about your career and what’s going on with your family, too. Your company may be very receptive to the idea of increasing your value in the workplace. A good leader will also understand the importance of family. Also, there’s a great book by Dan Miller that addresses this topic. It’s called 48 Days to the Work You Love. In this book, he lays out the steps to discovering what you really love to do and how to get there. Best of luck, Tim! —Dave
