Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money & business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. Loan Converts To Scholarship Dear Dave, I’m a senior in high school here in Arkansas, and I think I want to study business in college. I’ve gotten an unusual offer from a small, out-of-state school. It revolves around a $3,000 student loan program, where the loan converts to a scholarship if I maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or higher. Tuition at this college costs about $34,000 a year, so I was wondering what you think about the idea. Garrett Dear Garrett, I’m glad you’re thinking about the future. But this is not my favorite idea, because you could end up with a loan.
I don’t think you’re going to get a return on your investment overall in this picture, Garrett. Add to that this little student loan nuance, and the fact that they’re not giving you enough “free money” to make this a good deal, I would have to say don’t do it. —Dave
When To Buy A Better Car? Dear Dave, My wife and I are following your plan, and we’re in the middle of the Baby Steps. Do we have to wait until Baby Step 7 to buy a new car? Alan Dear Alan,
In business, one of the things we look at is return on investment. If I can go to one place where tuition’s $34,000 a year, but I could go to another place that’s in-state for about $7,000, the question becomes this: Am I going to get a five times better education — or is my income going to be five times greater — by going to the expensive school? I think most of us who have been walking around a while would say no.
No, you don’t have to drive a beater until you pay off your house. My advice is to drive the minimum car you can until you get past the first three steps. Remember, Baby Step 1 is a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is paying off all debt except for your house, then Baby Step 3 is fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses.
Your income will not be based on where you went to school, and it won’t necessarily even be based on your grade point average. It will be based on your ability to take what you learned into the marketplace, kill something and drag it home. This has as much, if not more, to do with your initiative, your perseverance, character qualities and integrity as where you went to school.
Once you’ve done all that, then you can move up to a nice car. I didn’t say move up to a new car. I want you to save up cash a get a really nice, barely used car. I never advise buying a brand new car unless you have a net worth of at least $1 million. At that point, you’ve got enough assets in place to where you won’t even feel the massive hit in depreciation that comes with buying a new vehicle.
One of the great jokes in America today is that where you go to school matters. Some places may have better programs in certain areas than others, but is this particular college — which I’m guessing isn’t a prestige school, since you didn’t mention the name — five times better than a solid in-state school like Arkansas State the University of Arkansas? No, it’s not. Vol. 21 Issueor 1036
But until then, drive good used cars. That’s what the typical millionaire did, and I want you to model your financial behavior after people who are in the position you want to be in some day!
24 April 22 - April 29, 2016

Haven’t looked for a Job in Years? Here’s What has Changed. by Robin Ryan, Author of 60 Seconds & You’re Hired
T
empted to job hunt by the improved economy? You should be. Candidates are securing better positions at higher salaries If they know how to get through the job search process successfully.
If you want a new job, you can find one. You will need to change your approach, though, because you must move out of the pack to get noticed. In today’s job market, these two things need to happen: You must tap into the “hidden job market” in order to find better job opportunities.
Networking is a must-use component for success. Networking is very different—gone are the days when you were sent to events and told to “work the room.” It is now very strategic with you needing to have a terrific profile on LinkedIn. Sadly, many people experience lengthy job searches because they are too passive in their approach. They look online and apply electronically. Click and send is easy, but not very effective. Meeting people and literally talking to employers is essential. Being proactive is imperative. Know how to present your top skills and strengths, and quickly tell a prospective employer about your past performance and results. In other words, be ready to sell yourself at a moment’s notice.
You must use proven ways of better selfpromotion that will get a prospective employer’s attention. Here’ my advice on what is different and how to handle it. Don’t trip over obstacles you have placed in your own pathway. You must limit the restrictions you place on yourself during your job search. That means commuting, working overtime, traveling—being open to go where the job is. The more restrictions you put on your next job, the more difficult it will be to uncover.
Know the exact job you want to be hired for. Be specific about what you want in a new position. Know the job title, if it’s a lateral move, a step up, a big change, or even only a part-time position. Go after what you ultimately want, while remaining realistic about what is available in your marketplace. You must be flexible, and some of you may need to relocate to where you find the job. Keeping an open mind is the Vol. 21 Issue 1036 best course of- April action. April 22 29, 2016
44
Your resume must emphasize accomplishments and results. That is imperative because results are all that matters to employers. Include only relevant information, not your entire work job descriptions. The Internet has made electronic applications easier, while at the same time it has created a black hole for resumes. Your resume must be laced with appropriate key words. And in a time when many people have stopped writing cover letters, you will need to create a very effective one addressing the employer’s specific needs. Resumes only get a fifteensecond glance even when someone does see them, so yours needs to stand out and sell what you can do quickly and concisely.
Questions have gotten more difficult too. It’s popular today to ask situational—often called behavioral questions. You’ll need to prepare answers in advance for these tricky ones, or you’ll be stumped and likely get yourself eliminated in the process. Expect to get a screening interview, on the phone, long before you ever see a hiring manager in person.
Salary negotiations are tricky. If you think that being older or unemployed prevents you from negotiating—you are wrong. In fact, employers are still paying good salaries to get the talent they want. You’ll have to know exactly what your skill set is worth in the marketplace and what to say— and not say—to be effective in salary negotiations. Typically, the first offer is not the employer’s top offer. You must be equipped to answer the salary questions effectively to earn more in your new paycheck. You need to be aware of your industry changes. Is your field growing or shrinking? What about your type of jobs? Can you move up? Or On? Read books or get a career counselor to help you and develop a job search plan outlining the steps you need to enact to succeed.

The Logistics and Transportation Industry in the United States The logistics and transportation industry in the United States is highly competitive. By investing in this sector, multinational firms position themselves to better facilitate the flow of goods throughout the world’s largest consumer market. International and domestic companies in this industry benefit from a highly skilled workforce and relatively low costs and regulatory burdens. Spending in the U.S. logistics and transportation industry totaled $1.33 trillion in 2012, and represented 8.5 percent of annual gross domestic product (GDP). Analysts expect industry investment to correlate with growth in the U.S. economy. A highly integrated supply chain network in the United States links producers and consumers through multiple transportation modes, including air and express delivery services, freight rail, maritime transport, and truck transport. To serve customers efficiently, multinational and domestic firms provide tailored logistics and transportation solutions that ensure coordinated goods movement from origin to end user through each supply chain network segment.

Careers in this subsector include: Aircraft Cargo Handling Supervisors, Pilots, Flight Crew, Air Traffic Controllers, Aircraft Cargo Handling Supervisors and Airport Support Personnel.
Maritime: This subsector includes carriers, seaports, terminals, and labor involved in the movement of cargo and passengers by water. See the JobSparx article on page 62 for more information on careers at the Houston Port Authority. Motor carriers collected $642 billion in revenues, or about 81 percent of total revenue earned by all domestic transport modes.
Freight rail: High volumes of heavy cargo and products are transported long distances via the U.S. rail tracking network. THE SECRET TO
OVERCOMING JOB HUNT PROCRASTINATION BY LAURA LEIGH CLARKE
THE PRESSURE IS ON.
The job hunt has begun, and with it, the anxiety over how long you’re going to have to replace your
income and whether you’ll make your next set of bills. Going after a new job is a huge inconvenience, and even if you’re in the fortunate position to still have the job you’re looking to replace, you may still be feeling a degree of trepidation about making a change. No matter what your personal circumstances or what scenario has thrust you back out into the job market, job hunting comes loaded with a number of pressures. If you’re feeling the strain — and the inertia that often goes along with it– there is something you can do to make the whole process much easier. First, know that you are not in this alone.
21 Issue 1036 58 Vol. April 22 - April 29, 2016
FEELING STUCK IS NORMAL
of getting that job, this in itself is a pressure and something that will zap your energy and make it more difficult to do what you need to do.
On the one hand, you want to pay the bills, and you have the fear of not being able to do so pushing you to move forward, to take action, to brush up your resume and put yourself out there.
I know what you’re probably thinking: You just need to send out more resumes or land one more interview or get one more thing done. The reality is, very little will shift in the outside world until your inner world changes — regardless of how much effort you put in. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) It all starts with understanding that inner
Feeling resistance over doing what you need to do is actually related to the various pressures you’re under.
But on the other hand, you also have pressures that cause you to hang back. Mobilizing for the job hunt is a massive pain in the butt. You have so much to put in place. You have applications to write, companies to contact, telephone interviews and surveys and aptitude tests and screenings to pass. On top of all that, at any stage in the process, there’s a big risk you will be rejected. And boy, do we do crazy things to avoid that feeling of rejection — even when we think we’re pretty resilient. The thing is, no matter how confident and unaffected by others’ opinions you may think you are, being already under pressure will make you more sensitive to things that would have, on any other day, been water down a duck’s back. Even though logically you know it isn’t personal and you can’t win every job, when you’re knocked back for a position, that haunting worry that you aren’t good enough rears its ugly head and can put even the most confident of professionals into a funk. Between this and the pressure of having to get a job, it’s not surprising if you’ve ended up procrastinating and putting off doing what you should be doing. But what can you do about it? When you can’t do what you know you should do, look at the pressures pulling you in different directions.
TAKE OUT THE PRESSURES BEFORE THEY TAKE YOU OUT OF THE GAME
The trick to handling all of this is to become aware of the anxieties and pressures pulling you all over the place. Even though all your pressure might be pulling you in the direction
world.
HOW TO SLAY JOB HUNT PRESSURES
The solution to your problem is to become aware of all the factors pushing and pulling you when it comes to getting a job. The easiest way to do this is to grab a pen and paper and apply this simple two-step process:
STEP 1:
CREATE TWO LISTS
The first list is all the reasons you need to get a job, and the second list is all the reasons you don’t want to get (or are avoiding getting) a job. If you manage this easily, you may want to hone this down further and do it for a specific job you’re in the process of applying for. The first thing this will do is give you an awareness of all the factors at play and give you some clarity on your own motivations. You wouldn’t be the first person to have an a-ha moment as to why you’re finding everything so hard. You may even spontaneously reevaluate the jobs you’re applying for once you look at your real motivations. At the very least, you will see the mixture of necessity and fear, and your own deeper desires for what you want in your life, come to the surface.
STEP 2:
REMOVE THE PRESSURES
Now you need to take these pressures out of the equation, simply by experiencing
fully the feelings associated with them. The reason fear and pressure have such a hold over us is because we try to battle on without really feeling them. This just wears us out and eventually makes us feel like giving up. If you want to have 100% of your energy available to you for your job hunt, you’re going to have to let go of wasting energy keeping your feelings in check. The way to do this is to go through each item on your two lists and simply sit with the feelings each one produces. Let’s say you have “need to pay bills” on one list. Just feel for a moment how that makes you feel. Maybe you notice a sensation somewhere in your body, like a heaviness in your chest or throat. You may feel it as a pressure in your heart. However you experience it, simply stay with that feeling and lean into it. In a few moments, you will notice it begin to ebb away, as if it were never even there. Do this for each item on the list, spending several minutes on each until you no longer feel anything. By the time you’ve completed both lists, you will be feeling much lighter, much freer and more able to focus on what’s really going to get you where you want to be. Take your time with this exercise. The results can be truly transformational — not just for your immediate career and job search, but for the rest of your life.
SHARE WHAT YOU’VE FOUND
The final step is to consolidate what you’ve learned. Take a moment and share in the comments some of the anxieties that have come to mind as you’ve been reading this. If you’ve had any a-ha moments, feel free to share those , too. About Laura Leigh Clarke: Laura Leigh Clarke is a Business Coach & the founder of ProsperityQM. in the workplace. If you are looking at a very traditional, professional job, you may want to make sure tha t the y can be covered. There are still some jobs and some industries tha t don’t reall y accept ta ttoos, and there are people like your “friend” who will never accept them. The most important thing to remember is that you may be putting your career in a box when you choose a lot of visible tattoos. However, ever y career decision we make puts us in some kind of box.
What about tattoos? I’ve been working at the same company for about 4 years and have steadily been given raises and more responsibility. My super visor reall y likes me, but he’s retiring in three months. He has been taking the time to teach me a lot about what he does. I think he believes that I’m going to get promoted to his job. I said something to one of the other guys, and he says that my tattoos are a problem. He said that none of the high up people have as many tats as I do, and he thinks that won’t get the job based on this. I love tattoos and have a lot of them. I think of them as art, but I’m worried that I won’t get a chance. I know I can do the job, and I know that I’m the best person for it. How can I find out if I will be able to move up? -Houston, Texas Reader
A:
I hate my boss…. My boss is a bigoted, prejudiced loudmouth. He never has a kind word, and he doesn’t like it that women are in our office. He lets me know every day that I should be home cooking and cleaning. I really need this job, and it took me a long time to find one that works with my schedule and pays enough. Don’t tell me to go over his head, because he is the owner. There is no HR department, and this jerk is in charge of everyone. Is there anything that I can do?\ -Waco, Texas Reader

I assume tha t your super visor already knows that you have a lot of body art. If he knows tha t, and he’s tr ying to teach you his job, why would you think it would matter? For more than 100 years, the Port of Houston Authority has owned or operated the public cargo-handling facilities of the Port of Houston – the nation’s largest port for foreign waterborne tonnage. The Port of Houston not only is a vital link in the
United States’ supply chain, nationally and internationally, but is also vastly important to employment in Texas. In 2015, a study published by Martin Associates stated that businesses related to the ship channel were responsible for 1,174,567 Texas jobs. The economic impact the port brings to the state is more than $264 billion, with more than $5 billion in state and local tax revenues related to port businesses.
Growth at the Port, despite the economic downturn caused by the recent drop in oil prices, continues to keep business booming. From a $15 billion petrochemical complex to smaller transportation companies and cruise lines, the area has many
LATEST NEWS: New Container Service Starting at Port of Houston Authority In anticipation of increased opportunities for inbound consumer goods and outbound industrial commodities, Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co. have joined forces to operate a new direct all-water container service between the U.S Gulf and Asia. The new service by the 2M Alliance features the “Lone Star Express” by MSC and “TP18” by Maersk. The first sailing is scheduled to depart Asia May 2, with Houston as the first U.S. inbound port call. The Lone Star/TP18 Gulf service will have a rotation of Qingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Xiamen, Yantian, Busan, Cristobal, Houston, Mobile and Miami. The estimated inbound transit time to Houston is 26 days from Yantian and 23 days from Busan. The vessels deployed will have a capacity of about 4,500 twenty-foot–equivalent units (TEUs). “The Port of Houston Authority is pleased that the service focuses heavily on the Port of Houston,” Port Commission Chairman Janiece Longoria said. “The Houston region is a growth market due to increased demand for import consumer goods and the boom in plastic resin exports in the next few years.”
“This new service will enhance the existing weekly Asian services operated by CMA CGM, COSCO and Hanjin calling at the Port Authority,” said Executive Director Roger Guenther. “We are very pleased that Maersk and MSC are expanding their operations here as well.” “We will continue to expand our Bayport Container terminal and upgrade our Barbours Cut container terminal to meet the growing demands of our customers,” Guenther added. “These additional Trans-Pacific all-water services demonstrate our ability to provide a cost-effective supply chain option connecting Asia to local and key Midwest markets via the Gulf of Mexico.” The Port of Houston Authority is the largest container port in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, handling about two-thirds of all the containers that move through the gulf. In 2015, the Port Authority handled more than two million TEUs for the first time in its history. The Port Authority also set a record for tonnage in 2015, handling 30.5 million tons of cargo at its facilities.
