Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money & business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.
Talk About Boundaries Dear Dave, My husband and I are just starting to get control of our finances, but we have a problem. My dad has a habit of expecting us to buy things for him. I know he has money, but anytime he knows we’re going to the store, he gives us a list of things he wants. If he’s with us, he just throws things in the cart and expects us to pay. He acts like we have an obligation to do all this for him. I love my dad, but this has become annoying. What can we do? Christina Dear Christina, I know you love your dad, but he sounds like the kind of guy who doesn’t really respect boundaries. And these kinds of folks, as a rule, don’t like it when they’re suddenly confronted with them. Regardless, you need to have a firm but loving talk with your dad. Let him know how much he means to both of you, but remind him that you and your husband are working hard to get into better financial shape. This means you can’t spend more than is absolutely necessary. If he’s hungry, have him over for dinner. If he just needs one or two small things, that’s not such a big deal. But you’re not obligated to pay his way just because he’s your dad. Like I said, he may or may not like this conversation. He may fuss and throw a little fit, but at that point it becomes his problem, not yours. Chances are he’ll come around in a week or so, and after he gets over the embarrassment of it all, everything will be all right again. You aren’t an unloving or ungrateful daughter for not letting him run all over you. Talk to him in a kind, respectful way. If
21 Issue 1035 24 Vol. April 15 - April 22, 2016
you feel you can’t stand up to him alone, ask your husband to lend support or put a voice to your wishes. It’s important that you’re both on the same page with this issue. —Dave
If It’s Paid for, Do You Sell It? Dear Dave, I’m debt-free except for my house. I make about $120,000 a year, and I have a truck that’s worth around $33,000 and a car that’s worth $28,000. I don’t have an emergency fund, so I was wondering if I should sell the truck to establish my emergency savings. Eric Dear Eric, A good rule of thumb is to never have more than half of your annual income tied up in things that go down in value. You’re not quite there, but you’re close. And I love your idea of wanting to immediately establish an emergency fund. You never know what life is going to unexpectedly throw at you, and an emergency fund is great insurance against that sort of thing. Here’s how I look at it. Nothing you’ve told me indicates that this truck represents anything being out of control. It’s an expensive truck, but it’s not like you make $30,000 a year and have a $33,000 truck. That kind of thing would be just plain stupid. But if you don’t need or want the truck — and you’re that passionate about having a big, instant emergency fund in place — then sell it! —Dave

Changing Careers
After
21 Issue 1035 48 Vol. April 15 - April 22, 2016
It is becoming more and more common to see people over the age of 50 changing careers. In decades past, many people stayed in the same career, and sometimes even the same job, for virtually all of their working lives. However, times have changed and it is becoming very common for people to change careers a number of times during their lifetimes. A number of factors are contributing to the increased numbers of people in the 50 and over population who are seeking to change careers. One of the biggest factors is the sheer size of that age group. The market segment commonly referred to as the baby boomer generation isn’t made up of babies any more. The baby boomers are now in the 50 plus age group, so there is a larger workforce in this segment of the population now than ever before. Additionally, in today’s world of advanced medical technology, people tend to stay healthy and live longer than those of generations past. This fact, paired with fears about dwindling social security benefits and the virtual disappearance of employer-sponsored pension plans has resulted in people continuing to stay in the workforce longer than those of prior generations. However, just because people are working longer does not mean that they are staying in the same career longer. People’s interests, abilities, and financial requirements change as they age, and it is
not unusual at all for people 50 and over to change careers. Even those who have the opportunity to retire find that they are bored without a career to occupy their minds and their time. Some retirees find that they actually need to continue to earn income to maintain the retirement lifestyle they want to have. Many retirees who choose to re-enter the workforce go back into occupations similar to the ones they held previously. The good news for those seeking midlife career change is that there are a number of excellent opportunities to find and secure the type of employment that you desire. Many companies actively recruit older workers, and there are a number of occupations that lend themselves very well to those who are in the 50 plus age group. When preparing to make a career change after 50, it is a good idea to give some thought to what you really want from your new career. You have probably had enough experience at this point to know what you like and don’t like about the types of jobs you have had. It’s never too late to acquire new skills and to pursue a career change in an occupation that will be both financially and personally rewarding.

TIPS TO GET THAT NEW JOB AFTER THE AGE OF 50 1. BE ACTIVE ONLINE
Create or update your linkedIn, Twitter and Facebook accounts with current photos, making sure you look like someone that is hire-ready. Having a strong online presence will show that you are upto-date and able to navigate the online world. Sixty-five percent of companies recently surveyed by the Society for Human Resource Management stated that they found new employees through social media.
2. NETWORK
Networking is one of the best ways to land a new job. Employers hire people they know, or people who know people they know. Reach out to at least one person every day either online or face to face and ask for help or advice. Friends, family, former coworkers, social media contacts are all good resources for jobseeking.
3. JOB BOARDS ARE ONLY PART OF THE EQUATION
Most jobs are filled internally or through referrals (see #3 above), and with the sophistication of new database filtering, many resumes submitted online are screened and weeded out without anyone looking at them.
4. UPDATE YOUR RESUME, LOOKS AND ALL
Trim your resume down to 1 page, two pages maximum. “Think advertisement, not obituary”, quips Susan Whitcomb, author of Resume Magic: Trade Secrets for a Professional Resume Writer. “No one wants, or needs, to read every one of your employ-
21 Issue 1035 50 Vol. April 15 - April 22, 2016
ment entries over a four-to five-decade career.” There are many free resources through the Texas Workforce, Houston area public libraries and local churches to help get your resume in good working order.
5. GET PHYSICALLY & FINANCIALLY FIT
Spruce up your wardrobe, and make sure you are up to date on interview appropriate fashions. Update your haircut, makeup and even your shoes, as any or all of these things can age you. If you are not exercising regularly, start today. Looking and feeling your best will come through in the interview process, and banish some of the stereotypes about older workers. Paying off debts or reevaluating your current budget can help when salary expectations are not what you were hoping they would be for the job you want.
6. VOLUNTEER OR DO PRO BONO WORK
Volunteering can help fill in gaps in your resume, show that you are active in your community, keep your skills current, and also allow you to network.
See Robin Ryan’s article on the next page for more details about how volunteering can help you.
7. DON’T GET TRAPPED
You don’t need an exact replacement for your last job. Considering a new position in a different industry can become a golden opportunity for you. You may find that flextime works better with your lifestyle than full time did. Learning a new skill or enhancing skills you already possess can help you build a new life for this new stage in your life.
Ready for a Career Change? VOLUNTEER SKILLS MATTER TO EMPLOYERS By Robin Ryan Author of Over 40 & You’re Hired
Employers are always interested in volunteer skills especially when they relate to performing a job. Many new careers and promotions have come from an individual having the right volunteer experience.
her own blog. Eventually she mailed out samples and got a few paid assignments that lead to her being a writer for national magazines, including numerous Brides’ magazines.
When I met Janet, a mother of three teenagers in her late forties, her very first question was “Do you think anyone would hire me? I’ve haven’t worked a day in nearly fifteen years.”
People unhappy in their fields often choose to volunteer in completely different areas. As a result, they often pick up some new skills and the chance to explore an interest while learning something new and stimulating.
Janet had never been paid a salary, but she was quite accomplished. The mother had organized major fundraisers, special events and large three-day conferences. She had recruited helpers, secured corporate sponsorships, planned agendas and coordinated catering for hundreds, all through her volunteer work. Until our career counseling session, Janet didn’t feel that her skills
Jim had a 20-year marketing career but he’d spent much of his free time working on environmental causes. He lobbied legislators, worked on writing position papers and made dozens of contacts and told me he thrived on advocacy work. At 48, he made the decision to head off to law school and today works as a successful lobbyist.
GAINING MARKETABLE SKILLS – PAID OR UNPAID – IS ESSENTIAL.
Darren was a military firefighter who volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. He gained some valuable management experience working on several building projects. He showed exceptional talent in coordinating manpower and materials. Upon leaving the military, he put that leadership expertise to use landing a great job as project manager for a major developer.
would have value to a potential employer because she had not been paid for her work. That was far from true. When she sent out her new resume outlining all the event planning she had done, employers started to call. Janet got several interviews, and within a few weeks began a great job with an impressive salary. Volunteerism might just help launch your next career. Many people want to do something different. If that describes you, stop to consider the volunteer work you have done or might want to take on in the future.
Mary had been an accountant but said she was felt burned out doing taxes. She wanted something new. We meet for some career counseling and I uncovered she had spent nearly ten years being heavily involved doing a lot of nonprofit volunteer management work for a local arts organization. That led to her new career in nonprofit administration doing something she cared about and using skills she’d given away before. “We value many kinds of experience,” Maria, an HR manager, says. “And we appreciate a person who has shown initiative through volunteer activities to obtain it.” Donna, a Senior Vice President, said, “Women tend to disregard life skills -- scheduling, budgeting, organizing events and charity work. Planning a fundraiser and having 200 people turn out is a significant achievement. It demonstrates management leadership that’s definitely needed in today’s workplace.”
The US government reports that 25% of Americans volunteer in the US, amounting to about 63 million people.

by Ken Sundheim For most professionals, success hinges greatly on the company you work for. Regardless of natural talent, if you land successive jobs at average companies, eventually you’ll fall victim to your environment. If you’re like many people, winning positions with successful companies rather than average ones means reimagining your view of the recruitment process.Evaluating and identifying what a truly successful job search process looks like is the skeleton key for unlocking doors into the most successful companies.
HOW BEST TO BEGIN?
Defining a Successful Job Search
The job seekers who have the most trouble are those who don’t set defined goals. Without specific goals, they are unable to gauge how they’re doing during the process and whether alterations need to be made in their strategy. Naturally, the main goal of any job search is an acceptable offer of employment. A successful job search is one that yields anywhere from two to four solid employment options. This number fluctuates based on a candidate’s experience level, as well as salary demands and the current market in their industry and/or geographic area. For instance, an entry-level candidate should strive for three or four employment offers, while an established professional asking for a salary over $100,000 ought to be more than satisfied with two viable offers.
ANALYZING THE JOB SEARCH PROCESS DIFFERENTLY Consider the following tips:
1. Learn to Step Back and See the Big Picture
Many job seekers only think about what they want and don’t take into consideration the needs of the hiring manager. Their vantage point is one-dimensional, and everything from their application to their interviewing techniques suffer. In reality, you don’t interview with a company; instead, you interview with a person (or, more often, people) within that company. Take a few minutes to see things from their perspective; envision their needs. 21 Issue 1035 58 Vol. April 15 - April 22, 2016
For instance, the HR manager of a large company is going to be preoccupied with finding someone who has the skill sets to do the job today. They’re not concerned with your creative ideas for shaping the company’s future. Conversely, the CEO of a small business is preoccupied with finding someone who thinks like an entrepreneur and has a vision for how they can improve the firm going forward. Once you can think like a hiring manager, you can easily connect with and impress a hiring manager.
2. Get into the Habit of Viewing Stressful Situations as Enjoyable Challenges
Efficient job seekers don’t waste time worrying about how they’re going to find the job they want, nor do they beat up on themselves for past interview failures. Rather, they have the ability to shift their focus to the obstacles that need to be overcome for them to achieve their goals. Once they’ve defined those hurdles, they do everything possible to knock them out one by one. Successful job applicants understand that inner turmoil depletes energy, creativity and interviewing prowess. They learn the necessary skills to cope with that stress, and thus are able to turn negative events into positive momentum.
AVOIDING THE SNOWBALL EFFECT
If you fail to put 110% into your search, you’re going to see significant ramifications. Think of it as a snowball effect. If you don’t end up at a strong company, your coworkers are much less likely to be ambitious, creative and positive-thinking individuals. If you’re not around the right people, the chances of you thriving at your position drastically decrease. (Click here to tweet this thought.) If you’re not productive and successful, you’ll eventually end up leaving, and the following will be true: • You will lack strong recommendations for your next job. • You will have no significant achievements to show on your resume. • You will remain at or slightly above your current salary.
In addition to setting defined, measurable goals in your job search and learning to analyze the hiring process more meaningfully, you can help yourself avoid the snowball effect by working on the following:
GENERAL
1. Keep an Eye on the Timeline
Regardless of career level, the entire interview process should not be shorter than three weeks, but should be complete before eight. Any shorter than three weeks, and you risk making an impulsive decision that lands you at a mediocre company you haven’t thoroughly vetted. Any longer than eight, and you lose momentum, thus becoming prone to settle for a position that doesn’t utilize your full range of skills and experience. You don’t have full control over the interview timeline, so pay attention to companies trying to either rush it or drag out the process, as this often signals a real problem reaching effective internal decisions.
2. Hold Yourself Accountable to Your Goals and Objectives
In your job search, it’s just you. A spouse or friend may provide moral support, but at the end of the day, you run on your own steam. Knowing your goal is to achieve a certain amount of strong job offers, and knowing you need to think critically about your interviewers’ perspectives and react positively to your own stress, you are the one who has to make up your mind to aim for those goals and those tasks each day of your job search.
IN THE END
It’s not enough to be hardworking, determined and passionate about your job if you aim to be meaningfully successful. You must approach your job search with that same hard work, determination and passion. The way to success in your job search, and thus your career, isn’t holding yourself to perfection. Rather, teach yourself to think about the job search process on more varied levels. Pay attention to both current factors, like the hiring managers’ perspectives, and long-term indicators such as timing. Above all, hold yourself up to the task of improving every day, in your job search just as in your career. PROFESSIONAL CAREER TRAINING INSTITUTE Did you get your job through JobSparx? If you got your job from an ad in JobSparx, I want to talk with you!! If you dress correctl y, and you still don’t get called for second inter views, there ma y be other things that are standing in your way. You are ob viousl y getting tha t first inter view, but we need to get you to the job of fer!!
Where are the jobs? What to wear… I have read everything about what to wear to an interview, but I have to tell you that I don’t have any clothes like you and the other advisors list. The closest I have is one church dress, and it’s too tight now. To be honest with you, I just don’t dress up very often and most of the jobs that would be good for me don’t need me to dress up. The problem is that I have been wearing jeans and a nice blouse to interviews, but I’m not getting any jobs. One of the ladies who interviewed me last week made a remark about my outfit. I just told her that I don’t have dress-up clothes. She actually rolled her eyes and I wouldn’t want to work with someone so snobby anyway. How can I pull together an interview outfit that I can still wear later? It just can’t be too dressy, and I don’t want to spend a lot of money on something I’ll never wear again. -Houston, Texas Reader
I am moving to Houston with my company because I think there will be more opportunity there if this job doesn’t work out. Most of the people who were offered the move didn’t take it, but I know that there are not enough jobs here, and I’ll be better off in Houston. I have friends who live on the east side, and they want me to move over that way. Is that the best place in Houston to get a job? -Columbus, Ohio Reader
A:
The best place in Houston to get a job can be anywhere. It all depends on wha t kind of job you want. If you are involved in the oil industr y, you could look downtown, the Energy Corridor, Spring and The Woodlands. If you are looking f or medical jobs, you can live near the Medical Center, Memorial City, Clear Lake, and every other area where there is a concentra tion of hospitals and clinics. (Tha t’s pretty much an ywhere!) If you are in education, there are 40 colleges/universities/technical schools. You have to look for the area where you will be most in demand. To be sure, research your company’s competitors and see if they are clustered in an y specific area.

HR CAREERS:
EMPLOYEE RELATIONS SPECIALIST The employee relations specialist works to improve management and employee relations in ways that will benefit the individuals as well as the organization. As business management practices evolve in the 21st century, HR managers must realize that employees in nonmanagerial positions play an important role in the success of the organization. The need for human resource managers, including employee relations specialists, will continue to grow as companies expand. Employee relations specialists are needed in almost every industry, but most work in the private sector.
Evolving Theories of Employee Motivation
The field of employee relations is trending away from the traditional Freudian theory ‘X’ that speculates that people are inherently lazy and hate to work and that management must continually police, reward, threaten, or punish their employees to get them to work. An opposing theory ‘Y’ by Douglas McGregor theorizes that people have a natural desire to learn and to challenge themselves, which builds their confidence and self-discipline. Such employees are motivated by reaching goals and receiving recognition for a job well done. Money is often used as a motivational tool, but it only works well if employees are already positively motivated to perform their jobs.
Positive Motivation Benefits the Organization
The discipline of employee relations benefits the company by resolving conflicts between employees and management. By helping employees to deal with isVol. 21 arise, Issue 1035 sues as they the discipline helps create a positive

workplace environment and increases job satisfaction. Satisfied employees feel valued and will contribute to the success of the organization. A 2004 study by Fraser P. Seitel indicated that organizations that ranked highest in the Fortune 500 listing of “most admired” companies invested heavily in employee relations activities and had good internal communications with their employees, while the least admired companies budgeted very little on internal communications. Employees who have positive relationships with their managers and supervisors will influence the public’s high opinion of the organizations. Positive relationships depend on how well the managers communicate with their subordinates and peers.
What is Required of Employee Relations Specialists
Because they are involved in so many areas of a business, employee relation specialists have a wide scope of influence with both management and hourly employees. Since the employee relations specialist has a voice in so many of the disciplines of human resources, he/she must be knowledgeable about all of them. A bachelor’s degree is usually required to become an employee relations specialist. Many employers look for graduates with majors in human resources, but a business degree or liberal arts degree may be adequate to get an entry-level position. Advanced training or a graduate degree may be required for some positions. Students who want to become human resources managers or specialists should take a wide variety of classes including business administration and the social and behavioral sciences. Courses in labor law, collective bargaining and labor history are helpful.
THE NEED FOR HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGERS, INCLUDING EMPLOYEE RELATIONS SPECIALISTS, WILL CONTINUE TO GROW AS COMPANIES EXPAND. EMPLOYEE RELATIONS SPECIALISTS ARE NEEDED IN ALMOST EVERY INDUSTRY...
Becoming a Specialist
To become a specialist, you must expect to begin at an entry-level position in human resource management and work the way up through the ranks, gaining valuable experience along the way. Developing skills in teaching and supervising as well as keeping up with new technology will help advance one’s career toward employee relations specialist. Professional organizations that promote career growth in human resource management offer classes and certifications that can help move a career forward as well.
