EXXONMOBIL PLANS INVESTMENTS OF $ 20 BILLION TO EXPAND MANUFACTURING IN U.S. GULF REGION New projects expected to create more than 45,000 high-paying jobs across the region and thousands more through multiplier effect

March 6, 2017 HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) is expanding its manufacturing capacity along the U.S. Gulf Coast through planned investments of $20 billion over a 10-year period to take advantage of the American energy revolution, Darren Woods, chairman and chief executive officer, said Monday. The projects, at 11 proposed and existing sites, are expected to generate thousands of new high-paying jobs and $20 billion in increased economic activity in Texas and Louisiana, Woods said, highlighting the company’s Growing the Gulf initiative in a keynote speech today at the CERAWeek 2017 conference. “The United States is a leading producer of oil and natural gas, which is incentivizing U.S. manufacturing to invest and grow,” said Woods. “We are using new, abundant domestic energy supplies to provide products to the world at a competitive advantage resulting from lower costs and abundant raw materials. In this way, an upstream technology breakthrough has led to a downstream manufacturing renaissance.” ExxonMobil is strategically investing in new refining and chemicalmanufacturing projects in the U.S. Gulf Coast region to expand its manufacturing and export capacity. The company’s Growing the Gulf expansion program, consists of 11 major chemical, refining, lubricant and liquefied natural gas projects at proposed new and existing facilities along the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Investments began in 2013 and are expected to continue through at least 2022. Woods said that ExxonMobil’s Gulf expansion projects are expected to provide long-term economic benefits to the region, noting the creation of direct employment opportunities and the multiplier effects of the company’s investments. “Importantly, Growing the Gulf also creates jobs and lasting economic benefits for the communities where they’re located,” Woods said. “All told, we expect these 11 projects to create over 45,000 jobs. Many of MARCH 10, 2017 high-paying jobs averaging about $100,000 a these high-skilled, 20 are

year. And these jobs will have a multiplier effect, creating many more jobs in the communities that service these new investments.” According to the American Chemistry Council, chemical manufacturing is one of America’s top exporting industries, accounting for 14 percent of overall U.S. exports in 2015, and exports of specific chemicals linked to shale gas are projected to reach $123 billion by 2030. Most of ExxonMobil’s planned new chemical capacity investment in the Gulf region is targeted toward export markets in Asia and elsewhere. “These projects are export machines, generating products that highgrowth nations need to support larger populations with higher standards of living,” Woods said. “Those overseas markets are the motivation behind our investments. The supply is here; the demand is there. We want to keep connecting those dots.”

About ExxonMobil ExxonMobil, the largest publicly traded international oil and gas company, uses technology and innovation to help meet the world’s growing energy needs. ExxonMobil holds an industry-leading inventory of resources, is one of the largest refiners and marketers of petroleum products and its chemical company is one of the largest in the world. HOW TO BECOME A BUS DRIVER All types of bus drivers have to obtain a CDL. Bus drivers must have a commercial driver’s license (CDL). This can sometimes be earned during on-the-job training. A bus driver must possess a clean driving record and often may be required to pass a background check. They also must meet physical, hearing and vision requirements. In addition, bus drivers often need a high school diploma or the equivalent. EDUCATION Most employers prefer drivers to have a high school diploma or equivalent. TRAINING Bus drivers typically go through 1 to 3 months of training. Part of the training is spent on a driving course, where drivers practice various maneuvers with a bus. They then begin to drive in light traffic and eventually make practice runs on the type of route that they expect to drive. New drivers make regularly scheduled trips with passengers and are accompanied by an experienced driver who gives helpful tips, answers questions, and evaluates the new driver’s performance. Some drivers’ training is also spent in the classroom. They learn their company’s rules and regulations, state and municipal traffic laws, and safe driving practices. Drivers also learn about schedules and bus routes, fares, and how to interact with passengers. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS All bus drivers must have a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Some new bus drivers can earn their CDL during on-the-job training. The qualifications for getting one vary by state but generally include passing both knowledge and driving tests. States have the right to not issue a license to someone who has had a CDL suspended by another state. Drivers can get endorsements to a CDL that reflect their ability to drive a special type of vehicle. All bus drivers must have a passenger (P) endorsement, and school bus drivers must also have a school bus (S) endorsement. Getting the P and S endorsements requires additional knowledge and driving tests administered by a certified examiner. Many states require all bus drivers to be 18 years of age or older and those who drive across state lines to be at least 21 years old. Federal regulations require interstate bus drivers to pass a physical exam and submit to random testing for drug or alcohol abuse while on

duty. Most states impose similar regulations. Bus drivers can have their CDL suspended if they are convicted of a felony involving the use of a motor vehicle or of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Other actions also can result in a suspension after multiple violations. A list of violations is available from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Daylight Saving: Suggestions To Help Workers Adapt To The Time Change By Claire Caruso, PhD, RN, FAAN

Spring forward Fall back. We all know the saying to help us remember to adjust our clocks for the daylight saving time changes (this Sunday in case you are wondering). But, what can we do to help workers adjust to the effects of the time change? A few studies have examined these issues but many questions remain on this topic including the best strategies to cope with the time changes. By moving the clocks ahead one hour in the Spring, we lose one hour which shifts work times and other scheduled events one hour earlier. This pushes most people to have a one hour earlier bedtime and wake up time. In the Fall, time moves back one hour. We gain one hour which shifts work times and other scheduled events one hour later thereby pushing most people to have a one hour later bedtime and wake up time. It can take about one week for the body to adjust the new times for sleeping, eating, and activity (Harrision, 2013) . Until they have adjusted, people can have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up at the right time. This can lead to sleep deprivation and reduction in performance, increasing the risk for mistakes including vehicle crashes. Workers can experience somewhat higher risks to both their health and safety after the time changes (Harrison, 2013). A study by Kirchberger and colleagues (2015) reported men and persons with heart disease may be at higher risk for a heart attack during the week after the time changes in the Spring and Fall. The reason for these problems is thought to be disruption to circadian rhythms and sleep. Circadian rhythms are daily cycles of numerous hormones and other body functions that prepare us for the expected times for sleeping, eating, and activity. Circadian rhythms have difficulty adjusting to an abrupt one hour time change. Other hazards for workers related to the time change in the Fall include a sudden change in the driving conditions in the late afternoon rush hour– from driving home from work during daylight hours to driving home in darkness. People may not have changed their driving habits to nighttime driving and might be at somewhat higher risk for a vehicle crash. Additionally, the Spring time change leads to more daylight in the evening which may disturb some people’s sleep. To help reduce risks about one and a half weeks before the time changes in the Fall and Spring, employers can relay these points to help their workers. Remind workers that several days after the time changes are associated with somewhat higher health and safety risks due to disturbances to circadian rhythms and sleep. It can take one week for the body to adjust sleep times and circadian rhythms to the time change so consider reducing demanding physical and mental tasks as much as possible that week to allow oneself time to adjust. Remind workers to be especially vigilant while driving, at work, and at home to protect themselves since others around them may be sleepier and 10, at 2017 risk for making an error that can cause a vehicle crash 44 MARCH

or other accident. Research found men and people with existing heart disease may be at risk for a heart attack after the time change. Workers can improve their adaptation to the time change by using these suggestions (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2013). Circadian rhythms and sleep are strongly influenced by several factors including timing of exposure to light and darkness, times of eating and exercise, and time of work. One way to help the body adjust is to gradually change the times for sleep, eating, and activity. For the Spring time change, starting about three days before, one can gradually move up the timing of wakening and bedtime, meals, exercise, and exposure to light earlier by 15 – 20 minutes each day until these are in line with the new time. About one hour before bedtime, keep the lights dim and avoid electronic lit screens on computers, tablets, etc. to help the body move earlier the time it is ready to wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night. For the Fall time change, starting about three days before, one can gradually move the timing of wakening and bedtime, meals, exercise, and exposure to light later by 15 – 20 minutes each day until these are in line with the new time. About 1 hour after awakening in the morning, you can keep the lights dim and avoid electronic lit screens on computers, tablets, and so forth can help the body move to a later time that it is ready to wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night. Being sleep deprived before the time change will increase the health and safety risks so make it a priority to get enough sleep and be well rested several days before the time change.

D o e s t h e T i m e C h a n g e A f fe c t E v e r y o n e E q u a l l y ?

In short, no. People who sleep seven or less hours per day tend to have more problems with the time changes (Harrison, 2013). Additionally, a person’s natural tendency to get up early and go to bed early or get up late and go to bed late may also influence their ability to adjust to the one hour time changes in the Spring and Fall (Adan et al., 2012; Harrison, 2013). Those prone to naturally follow an “early to bed and early to rise” pattern (morningness) will tend to have more difficulties adjusting to the Fall time change because this goes against their natural tenancies. Conversely, those who naturally follow a “late to bed and late to rise” routine (eveningness) will tend to have more trouble with the Spring time change. Morningness/eveningness tends to change as people age. Teenagers and young adults tend to be “evening” types, and researchers theorize this may be due to brain and body development at those ages. Younger workers therefore may have more difficulty adjusting to the Spring time change (Medina et al., 2015). Morningness increases as people age, so older adults tend to be “morning” types. As a result, older workers may have more trouble adjusting to the Fall time change. Finally, people who are on the extreme end of the eveningness or the morningness trait may tend to have more trouble adjusting their sleep to the time changes. The online training program “NIOSH Training for Nurses on Shift Work and Long Work Hours” has many suggestions for coping with various types of work schedules and improving sleep. Although it was designed for nurses, the information is relevant to many occupations. Part 1, Module 2 gives information about sleep and circadian rhythms and Module 4 discusses individual differences. In Part 2, Module 6 gives suggestions for improving sleep. HOW TO LAND A TRUCKING JOB YOU’LL

HATE

A 7 Step Guide for Company Drivers By Suzanne Roquemore

You’ll find plenty of articles out there giving advice on how to get a

better job in trucking. This one focuses on how to ensure you’ll get one you’ll hate (or wind up hating the one you’ve got).

The 7 steps here are MARCH 10, 2017 50

guaranteed to land you a trucking job you’ll hate. VOL. 22 ISSUE 1081

1.

5.

Trucking companies hire from trucking schools. Some trucking companies will hire you and put you through school. There are some good trucking companies out there, but the industry standard is that recruiters lie- they’ll promise you the world. So if you don’t take the time to consider your options carefully, you are likely to wind up with a trucking company that offers mediocre pay, minimal benefits and a poor work environment. If you want to hate your job, jump in head first without looking around.

No one can whine like a truck driver. Fuel desk workers, dispatchers and CEOs have heard every excuse, complaint and insult there is. A driver with a positive attitude is hard to find. Most drivers start out with a good attitude. If you want to be treated poorly, develop a bad attitude. Become a negative person. You’ll get plenty of bad attitude in return- and you’ll hate your job.

JUMP AT YOUR FIRST JOB OFFER.

2.

JUMP INTO A LEASE PURCHASE PROGRAM.

DEVELOP A BAD ATTITUDE.

6.

BE AN UNRELIABLE DRIVER.

Making your deliveries on time is right up there with being accident free when you’re a truck driver. Dispatchers will keep an eye on you to make sure you’re on schedule- they want to be sure you’re not lagging behind schedule. If you If you want real headaches, buy a truck through a company consistently make your dispatcher worry about whether or lease purchase program. You’ll have all the expenses of an not you’re going to make your appointment, you’re going to owner operator and none of the benefits of a company driver. be considered a problem driver. Problem drivers don’t get the Sure, you’ll get a fuel surcharge and discount pricing with gravy runs and don’t get the luxury of elbow room. They wind most companies that offer this program. But they own the up looking for another job. truck- you can’t just quit your lease and take your truck to a better-paying company. You’ll find that most lease purchase payments are ridiculously high. In many cases, you’ll be paying more to lease the truck than you would to buy it outright.

7.

BE A CARELESS DRIVER.

3.

Most trucks or trailers out there have the company phone number on them in big numbers. Even if they don’t, most company phone numbers can be found easily by doing a Google search of the company name and city. If your company regularly gets calls complaining about your driving, you’ll lose the benefit of the doubt. Or if you regularly show Trucking companies are used to drivers who quit, and they up at the terminal with unexplainable dents, dings or scrapes don’t like them. If you want to ensure that you won’t get hired on the equipment, the excuse “it happened while I was inside by a good company, quit the one you’re with. Good truckthe truck stop” isn’t going to fly. If you’re a careless driver, ing companies like drivers who stick with it- they’ll respect a you’ll find that the only trucking job you’ll be able to land is driver who gives at least 6 months to the job before deciding one you’ll hate. to look elsewhere. If you want to land a trucking job you’ll hate, quit your first one after a few weeks.

QUIT YOUR FIRST JOB RIGHT AWAY.

4.

LOOK LIKE A SLOB.

The way you look says a lot about who you are and it influences how people treat you. If you insist on stained t-shirts, sweat pants and flip flops, you’ll find that people will generally treat you like a loser. And if you neglect to shower regularly, you’ll find that people will generally avoid you. Truckers who lack positive social interactions tend to hate their jobs.

NO MAGIC NUMBER

BEWARE OF OVERSPENDING

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

I’m 26, and I’ve been running my own business as sole proprietor for a year and a half. My gross revenues are a b o u t $ 9 4 , 0 0 0, a n d m y p e r s o n a l n e t w o r t h i s a r o u n d $68,000. Is there an asset level you recommend reaching

I know you’re big on bargains and saving money. How do you feel about warehouse clubs, like Costco and

before moving to LLC status?

- Jessica

- Meghan

Dear Jessica,

Dear Meghan,

We have both of those in our neighborhood, and I’m a big fan. There are definitely some good buys and great bargains to be had in places like that. To be honest, my wife is probably a bigger fan than I am. I suspect we save more money from her trips than mine to those spots.

There’s not really a magic number for this kind of thing. In your case, I wouldn’t go to the trouble for an LLC right now. You don’t need the hassle of extra paperwork and the expense of processing and filing fees. Just make sure you have normal, liability-type insurance in place. That shouldn’t cost a lot of money. The main reason you would consider shifting to an LLC is if you had reached a point in life as a business owner where you were afraid you might have a target on your back. By that, I mean you would want protection in the event of a lawsuit if your company had grown to sizable proportions and you had begun to accumulate substantial personal assets. At this stage I don’t think anyone’s going to bother you.

Sam’s Club?

I will advise you to watch your spending carefully in warehouse clubs. Most people overbuy in situations like that, especially those of us who are spenders by nature. Believe it or not, I’m a spender by nature. To this day, if I’m not careful, I’m still bad about buying things I don’t need – or too much of the things I do need – in warehouse clubs. Have fun in there, and make sure you find some steals on smart things you can stock up on. Just don’t go crazy and wreck your budget by overspending! — Dave
